Welcome back, Susan. Tell us about your
salvation experience.
I believe that being baptized as an infant saves and so my
experience was as a baby. I believe I was brought into God’s family as an
infant, however my life has been dedicated to discipleship and living out His
word. I have always lived with faith and don’t know a time when I didn’t
believe in Jesus Christ. My walk has changed over the years and has matured,
but it has always been there for me, and I have always been assured of my
salvation.
You’re planning a
writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be
and why?
Wow, this is a tough question. I believe we can all learn
from each other’s experiences and our needs change as we grow and develop. So
who I may want at my retreat today, could change tomorrow. That said. . ,
I would definitely want to include someone who has been in
the writing business for a long time and could share business tips with me.
Someone who has seen the many changes in the business. I guess, that person for
me would be my agent Chip MacGregor. In addition to being an incredible agent,
he is also an author so I can include him on my list.
I would want to include an author who is doing well in the
genre I am writing in and who is a fabulous writer. A very successful Christian
suspense author whose writing I admire is Sibella Giorello so I’d invite her. I
love her creativity, her prose and her characters and would love to talk with
her about the genre. Plus I just love her name. lol
For much of the same reasons, I would also ask Steven James.
He creates such amazing thrillers with intricate plot twists and big story kind
of books. Plus I interviewed him in person many years ago, and he’s a very
interesting and creative person.
My last pick would be Sandra Robbins, my dear, sweet friend
who is the best encourager. Sandra has given me great advice and has helped
steer my career in the early days and she continues to do so today. Plus she’s
just so sweet and fun. I’d love to spend time with her.
Do you have a
speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.
I do speak to groups at times, but I don’t do so on a
regular basis.
What is the most
embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?
Wow, only one, huh? One that stands out in my mind is from
the days when I traveled weekly. When you fly on a weekly basis, you sort of go
on autopilot, especially in airports you frequently pass through. I was in the Cincinnati airport after
a long week and was exhausted. My plane was delayed. I had to use the restroom,
and I’d sat at this particular gate many times so I thought I knew which
restroom was the women’s and which was the men’s. Let’s just say I must have
been more tired than I originally thought. I was wrong, and both, I and a man
were surprised to see me in there. I averted my eyes and rushed out of the
room, my face burning. I’m far more careful in choosing public restrooms now.
People are always telling
me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What
would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
I tell them that is how I started writing and I encourage
them to try it if that is there dream. I then explain the realities of the
publishing world and tell them it is difficult to break into it. I then
encourage them to join a writer’s group. If they want to write inspiration fiction,
I refer them to American Christian Fiction Writers. And if they show me they are
serious over time, I give them Randy Ingermanson’s book Writing Fiction for
Dummies. This is a wonderful beginner’s book and people have told me how much
it helped them get started.
Tell us about the
featured book.
My November release, Dead Wrong is the second book in my
Justice Agency series. This is a five book series about five siblings with a
law enforcement background who now work together in a private investigations
agency to help people who traditional law enforcement can’t help.
Dead Wrong features Kat Justice a former Portland police officer. When her client and
old college friend is murdered, Kat knows the killer will come for her next.
Her survival depends on finding her unknown enemy first…and working with
homicide detective Mitch Elliot, her onetime crush. It takes all her
professional skills to ignore the sparks between them, but Kat can’t allow the
handsome cop to get close. She’s seen too many people she loves die, so she
vows just to do her job without getting emotionally involved. Yet keeping her
distance may not be the best way to protect her heart—or their lives.
Please give us the
first page of the book.
Something was wrong. Seriously wrong.
Kat Justice flipped the light switch again. Once. Twice.
Three times. Click, click, click.
Nothing.
She held her breath and listened. No hum from the
refrigerator on the other side of the wall. No bubbling of the aquarium. She
couldn’t even hear the heater that should be running on this unusually cold Oregon day. Just
silence, pulsing in the dark.
Someone had cut the power to Nancy ’s house. Were they still here, hiding
in the murky shadows? Should she continue going forward or back out of the
house?
A fresh wave of concern sent a shiver down her back.
“Easy, Kat,” she whispered as she often had when she’d
served on the Portland
police force. But calming her nerves wasn’t so easy anymore. Not since she’d
left the force to work as a private investigator in the family agency. Now she
rarely faced danger.
But this new case was different. A man had followed her
friend Nancy home. She feared it had to do with her brother Nathan’s recent
death. She believed he’d been murdered.
Kat had told Nancy
to call 911, but the police weren’t here. Had Nancy been unable to make the call? After
finding the house dark, Kat called 911 herself, but she couldn’t stand outside
and wait for them to rescue Nancy .
She had to protect her friend at all costs.
Gun in hand, she slowly set off, putting one foot in front
of the other and hugging the dining room wall to make herself less of a target.
Her heart thumped wildly as she felt her way to the kitchen doorway.
“Nancy ,”
she whispered.
No response. She took another step, sliding her foot along
the floor. It thudded into something soft yet solid. She knelt down and felt
along the floor. A leg. A jean clad female leg.
Her breath hitched in her lungs as she moved toward the
spicy scent of her friend’s signature perfume.
“Nancy ?”
she whispered again, fear ripping open her heart.
She located her friend’s neck and checked her pulse.
None.
For a moment, she could only sit in horror. Nancy was dead. Her old college friend, the
woman she’d just reconnected with after seven years was gone. Kat had failed
her.
No, God, no. Not this. Not Nancy .
A sound drifted through the darkness. The barest of sounds
like a whisper. Kat held her breath and listened. Soft footfalls. One then
another, moving on carpet in the next room. Step after slow step. Heading her
way.
He’s still here.
Hands trembling, she jerked back against the wall.

Why don't we hear guys talk about bathroom embarrasements? Don't they ever walk into the wrong one, or are they immune to the feeling? Thanks for the interview, Lena and Susan, and for the chance to win.

I had my own bathroom experience and thank God it turned out ok. My niece was 3 and ran into a bathroom at a rest area to find her brother. What else could I do? I ran in after her praying no guys were in there. God was looking out for us because the only guys in there were her brother and mine washing their hands.
