SKIRTING TRADITION - Kay Moser - One Free Book

Welcome back, Kay. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I write fiction because readers are less guarded when reading a story, and I want to suggest a better way to live to them. I write about the God-given worth of every human being because I recognize that most people have been deceived into believing they are less than worthy. I write in order to be a channel for God to communicate to people. Sometimes I write historical fiction, sometimes my work is contemporary. Whatever God directs, I write.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
Today. Tomorrow the happiest day in my life will be tomorrow. Happiness is a choice.

Very good answer. How has being published changed your life?
It has restricted my time but given me limitless outlets for creative expression. Writing is solitary work. Writing on a schedule requires discipline, and once you’re published, you’re on a schedule.

What are you reading right now?
The Children’s Hour by Marcia Willett. Highly recommend!

What is your current work in progress?
Fashioning the Future is the 3rd book in the “Aspiring Hearts Series.” It is set in 1899, and the three female lead characters are all poised to rise above traditional barriers to women as they enter the new century.

What would be your dream vacation?
A month to roam around Britain visiting country estates.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I write about what I know about so I set my books in Texas, Colorado, and Washington state.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
President Jimmy Carter

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
Garden and watercolor painting

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
I hate writing first drafts. If my mind is immersed in a scene, I want to write it beautifully, not hurry through it. I don’t have an answer to this problem other than to apply discipline to myself. I just make myself write the first draft, so I can have the pleasure of rewrites.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Write every day at the same time. Even if you can only write for 30 minutes, write every day. Consider writing a real job!

Tell us about the featured book.
Sarah Novak has an impossible dream. She wants to be a schoolteacher, but everyone in Riverford, Texas, will tell you that in 1895 immigrant farm girls do NOT become teachers. It's an absurd notion, and the sooner it’s squashed, the better! These things can get out of hand, you know.

Riverford has another problem–a troublesome newcomer named Victoria Hodges. She's a Bohemian nonconformist who ran off to Europe 20 years ago to become an artist. How she managed to hook wealthy local businessman, Hayden Hodges, is more than a body can understand. One thing’s for certain. She's a corrupting force who must be removed from decent society!

Fortunately, Edith Bellows knows how to nip these things in the bud. A united stand of all the decent ladies, a cold-shouldered shut out of such radicalism–that's the ticket.

But Mrs. Bellows barely gets her campaign underway when mutiny in the ranks occurs. Why on earth would genteel Christine Boyd, daughter of famed Confederate Gen. Gibbes of Charleston South Carolina, befriend those two reprobates? Bless her heart! Doesn't she understand that the very life blood of Southern womanhood–propriety–is at stake?

There will be no skirting of convention on Mrs. Bellows’ watch!

Or will there?

An immigrant farm girl who loves books…an outcast artist returned to the scene of her youthful agony. Two social misfits dare to form a most unusual friendship and find healing for both, as well as restoration for a whole town that’s forgotten how to love.

Sounds like a wonderful book. Please give us the first page.
Fall 1895
“It don’t make no sense to educate a girl, Sally.” Pa slammed his empty coffee cup on the farmhouse kitchen table. “No sense at all.”

“But, Pa, if the boys get to go to school—”

“Boys need some book learning. They might make something of themselves. You ain’t gonna do nothing but get married and have babies.”

“I’m going to do a lot more! I’m not like Mama and the other girls. I want—”

“Blaznivy! Crazy talk. Marriage and children—that’s why women were made, and you gotta accept that. You’re gonna be seventeen soon, and you’ll be ready to marry. And ain’t no man gonna want a girl that’s smarter than he is.”

“But I don’t want to marry, Pa! I want to be Miss Sarah Novak, schoolteacher.”

“It’s settled, girl! You’re gonna be just plain Sally. We gotta keep up the mortgage payments on this farm, and we need cash money to do that. So starting today, you’re gonna work for Mrs. Bellows until you marry one of the Sykora boys. Now get breakfast on the table. It’s almost dawn, and I gotta go rouse the boys.”

Sarah shoved the biscuits into the oven, but the minute Pa disappeared, she raced to the front door and flung it open. Desperate for fresh air, she ran to the edge of the porch and searched the heavens for the comfort of an encouraging star. Nothing but dank air greeted her. The humidity of East Texas had settled on the farm, thickening the air and hiding the heavens.

She heard a rustle behind her, followed by her mother’s voice. “Go get yourself dressed, honey. Won’t do to be late your first morning.”

“But Pa means for me to do all I usually do here before I leave, and you have the new baby to—”

Her mother’s firm hug silenced her. “No. This is your time, Sally, your chance. I know your pa won’t let you go to school, but you’re gonna be in town, and that’s something. The Lord can do a lot with just a little if you work with Him. You go out there into the world and do your best to make your dreams come true! Do it for me, honey. My life stops on this farm, but yours doesn’t have to. You understand?”

“Yes, yes, Mama, I understand.” Tears welled up in Sarah’s eyes. “And I’ll never forget that you ... that you …”

“My daughter”—Mama slammed her fist down on the porch railing—“my daughter is gonna have more!”

THE ACCIDENTAL GUARDIAN - Mary Connealy - One Free Book

Dear Readers, if you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know that Mary Connealy is one of my favorite historical authors. And I’m glad to introduce her to you readers who haven’t read any of her books. With each new book, I say it’s my favorite. Mary is a master at coming up with unique story lines and plots. This has a new twist on a wagon train story. I loved it. And I loved the characters. They are always fully developed and fully human. You won’t want to miss this wonderful story.

Welcome back, Mary. What kind of files takes up the most space on your computer?
I’m sure it’s pictures, but only because they are space hogs. Not that I have so many. I have far more Word documents, they are small.

Do you have plans to ever retire from writing? Why or why not?
I picture myself at age 105, dying while typing a book. Wham, face right on the keyboard.
It’s not like there’s any HEAVY LIFTING involved in typing.

Are you a stay at home kind of person, or do you like to be on the road a lot?
I’m such a homebody. I mainly travel for book events and to see my grandbabies.

Please share a Bible verse or passage that has had the most impact on your life.
Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

I always feel like if I remember this verse and remember nothing, no matter how frightening can hurt my soul! I can handle anything. Which doesn’t mean I don’t scream and run when I see a mouse…so that’s embarrassing.

Do you have a favorite Bible character? Who is it and why?
I’m a big fan of Peter. He’s so normal. So human. I one verse, Jesus says, “On this rock I will build My church.” And in another he says, to Peter, “Get thee behind me Satan.”

And isn’t that just all of us? Sinning, failing, but still, with faith, able to build something for God.

What has been your favorite time in your life? And why?
I’ve had to think about this one awhile, because I loved those years when my children were all little and around my knees. But I have to say NOW, Lena. I’m having a great time writing and being a grandma.

Do you have an ereader? If so, what kind do you use?
I have a Kindle but I really prefer to hold a book in my hands.

Do you read mostly print books or ebooks?
Answered above, and I’m not sure why. I love the digital book revolution but I use my Kindle less all the time.

I keep my Kindle in my purse and read a book in snippets when we’re away from home, mostly when James is driving or I’m waiting somewhere. Otherwise, I read print books, too. Do you like to read books in the genres you write, or do you read only other genres … and why?
I read in my genre very little because worry about becoming derivative. Worse yet, I can FEEL myself reading a book in my genre and playing “what if” with the characters. I want to retell stories with my own twist. And I don’t want to do that!

Please tell us about the books we’re featuring today.
I love The Accidental Guardian. I feel like I know Trace Riley and Deb Harkness. I understand the fires that forged them and the lure of finding love and the fear of turning aside from their planned out life to be together. They are a great couple.

Please give us a peek at the first page of The Accidental Guardian for my blog readers.
South East of Lake Tahoe, Nevada - October 1867
Deborah Harkness came awake with a snap, her hand already steady on the six-gun under her pillow.

Just as fast, she eased off the tension and the trigger. She knew that sound.

Deb, I’ve got to go.” Three-year-old Maddie Sue needed to make a pre-dawn run into the tall grass.

It was almost encouraging that, after months of being awakened many mornings in just this way, Deb could still get nervous. A woman needed to be alert on a wagon train heading through the wilderness.

“Shhh, honey. I’ll take you. Shhh.” The little girl did her best to wait quietly—three-year-olds weren’t famous for that—while Deb slipped on the heavy coat she used for a blanket. Not waking up Maddie Sue’s exhausted parents was always Deb’s first goal. After that—not waking up Deb’s sister Gwen and Maddie Sue’s toddler cousin Ronnie ranked very high.

Everyone needed their sleep.

Deb had learned early on this wagon train journey to sleep fully dresses, so it took seconds to put Maddie Sue’s little coat on her—it was sharply cold in the peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in October. Deb grabbed her carpet bag and shoved her pistol inside, she never, ever left the safety of the wagon train without this bag and the gun. Mr. Scott had stressed this small precaution until it was a reflex. She urged Maddie Sue toward the back of the covered wagon.

A whimper stopped her.

Ronnie. If she left the little boy, he’d be bawling his head off before Deb got back and it wouldn’t just be Mr. and Mrs. Scott who’d be awake, it’d be the whole wagon train. Ronnie could howl.

“I’ve got him, Deb.” Gwen was awake now, too. “I’ll walk out with you.”

In the pitch dark of the wagon, Deb could more hear than see her nineteen-year-old sister donning her own coat.

Deb was tempted to growl with frustration. At this rate she and Maddie Sue would be leading a parade into the privacy of the grass.

Instead she just whispered, “Thank you.”

She and Gwen had teamed up to keep the Scott children tended in return for a ride across the country.

They’d earned every penny of the trip.

Now they walked silently away from the small wagon train. There was not a stir from behind them so Deb thought they’d left the Scotts still sleeping.

She sincerely hoped so.

The Scotts worked so hard and were so kind to Deb and Gwen. Deb’s life hadn’t had a whole lot of kindness in it for a long time.

They didn’t go far into the grass. The grass could be disorienting and, in the moonless, starless hours before dawn, fear gnawed at her, that she could get turned around in her directions in the grass, taller than her own head, and not find her way back to the wagons.

“Hurry up, honey.” The chilly air kept everyone moving fast. Gwen had Ronnie quiet, and Deb heard the eighteen-month-old boy sucking at a bottle, so Gwen must’ve had one ready from the night before and thought to grab it as they left the wagon.

“Good thinking on the bottle,” Deb whispered. The boy was probably too old for the bottle but in the hectic world of the wagon train they hadn’t thought to spend time weaning him and right now Deb was very glad.

Gwen’s quiet chuckle was followed by a soft croon as she kept the boy eating. “I’m on to him by now.”

They finished their little trip and turned to go back to the wagon when a gunshot cut through the night. Deb grabbed Maddie Sue’s arm and dove for the ground. Gwen landed right beside her, then stuck the bottle in Ronnie’s mouth before he could start crying.

A scream ripped through the air.

The gunfire came again and again. More guns, many guns. The shouts, the cries of fear and pain and to her horror, cries she recognized as people dying.

30 DAYS HATH REVENGE - C Kevin Thompson - One Free Book

Welcome, Kevin. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
I’ve been told some of the phrases I use come out in the dialogue of characters. “I hear you say that,” my readers will tell me. But overall, I try to use certain things from time to time to help make the character more authentic. I remember putting into the manuscript of The Serpent’s Grasp a description of a car Micah Gregson used to own that caused him to purchase the car he owned now, a red Mustang Cobra. The car he “used to own back in the day” was a red 1971 Mach 1 Mustang with a 351 Cleveland. That was the car I had in high school and when we were first married (boy, do I wish I still had it now). Unfortunately, that recollection of Micah got axed in the final edit. However, he is driving the Mustang Cobra when he gets followed by the FBI agent, trying to find a news station that carries late, breaking news, and wishing he hadn’t allowed his satellite subscription to expire (another personal piece of info about me, by the way).

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
I’ve sat here for ten minutes, and I can’t think of much. I even asked my wife, who’s known me since we were 15. She can’t either. So, I guess I’m not a very “quirky” person. More on the conservative side when it comes to my actions, I guess. However, I suppose it depends on who’s watching, too. Some people would say becoming a writer is a little quirky. “How can you sit at a computer for hours on end?” Ever heard that one? I’ve also had others “say”—not with their words so much but more with their looks and actions—that becoming a follower of Christ is quirky, if not borderline crazy.

When did you first discover you were a writer?
I had an inkling when I was in middle school. Creating stories was an interest, for sure. However, I really didn’t have anyone around who noticed or encouraged it growing up, and there weren’t the opportunities available back then like there are now for young writers (which maybe answers why I wasn’t encouraged?). I finally got more serious about it in my mid-thirties, got more serious about it in my mid-forties, and now, here I am, wishing I’d gotten serious about it way sooner.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
With fiction, I enjoy mysteries and thrillers and wander around that section of the bookstore the most. That doesn’t mean I won’t pick up something else and give it a try, like a speculative fiction work or a science fiction piece. As for non-fiction, that’s all over the map, depending on what I’m doing. Christian spiritual growth books, if I want to read something for personal edification. Books about education, which are related to my day job as an assistant principal at a middle school (that job choice may qualify as quirky, too). Books about the subject I am researching for a novel I am writing. If you look at the bibliography in the back of The Serpent’s Grasp (and yes there is one…I put it there for a reason…), then you’ll get an idea of what I’m talking about here.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
Sanity? What’s that? I work in a middle school. And I’m a writer. Doesn’t get much more insane than that. Especially in this day and age of school shootings and brick-and-mortar store closings. But hey, you can’t say that I’m a bystander in the game of life. I’m right in the middle of the action.

Through it all, though, the only thing that keeps me even-keeled is Christ. If I wasn’t a Christian, I’d probably be in prison by now. Some of the thoughts that cross our minds at times are far from Christ-like. Understandable, maybe, but miles away from unconditional love. So God helps me stay on track, especially when I start to jump the rails. I do have to admit that as the days get darker and the pressure gets more constrictive, I’m finding the need for more time with Him. But my biggest struggle is I don’t deal with “stupid” and “foolishness” very well. I have always had very little patience for it, and that is wearing thin these days. I understand when people get upset about things that are unfair or even teeter on the line of being criminal or not (we’d all probably be upset if we were in those shoes). But there is so much foolishness going on today, so much stupidity, and so much senselessness. For example, humans taking challenges like eating Tide pods. Really? Back in the day, those teens would be working on a farm somewhere or learning a trade that would eat up all the free time they have. Or what about those who take a stand on political, divisive subjects they have no clue how to truly solve (but they’ll tell you how to solve it so it helps their cause)? The Apostle Paul’s description of minds thinking, acting, behaving, and believing as if they were seared with a hot iron was never truer than it is today. And all this drives me to God more and more. Personally, I don’t know how He does it (doesn’t destroy us all), or how He did it (died on a cross to save us). I know why (love). But to know and to act are two very different things. I guess that’s what makes Him God and me a fallen human.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
You know, that’s a good question. Some are just random. I need a certain name, and I’ll scan the books on my shelf to see if one jumps out at me. Other times, I’ll run across a name I really like and jot it down for future reference. In many cases, because the names are nationalistically important, I’ll do a web search of “Russian surnames” or “Hispanic female first names,” for example, and choose one after researching it further to verify that it would work. But my favorite way has been when I have assigned the names of my children and grandchildren to secondary characters in my books. I try to use them creatively, and not use them exactly like the real name. Like, for example, making my grandson’s first name the last name of a deputy.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
I’m assuming you’re talking about writing accomplishments? Because I’d say being married for over 36 years is quite an accomplishment, especially with everything my wife and I have been through. J As for the writing, my proudest moment was when my book, The Serpent’s Grasp, won the 2013 Selah Award at the Blue Ridge Mountain Christian Writers Conference for first fiction (debut novel). My second proudest moment was when my second novel, 30 Days Hath Revenge (A Blake Meyer Thriller – Book 1), won second place in the 2013 Readers’ Favorite awards for Christian Fiction. I found out later that the only reason it didn’t win first place was because of the cover, which I admit was not that tantalizing. This book has since come out in second edition with a new, great-looking cover.

I was surprised and honored when my novel Maggie’s Journey won the Selah for long historical. I had only won one other major prize at that time.  If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
Probably a cheetah. I could outrun anything trying to catch me and outrun anything I’m trying to catch. And I’d have the tools needed to defend myself from most anything. Next would be a tiger. Wouldn’t be able to run as fast, but I’d better better-looking. J

What is your favorite food?
That’s a tie between an inch-thick, medium-well ribeye steak cooked to perfection with a slight char on the outside (I’m channeling my inner Guy Fieri here) and a good pepperoni pizza (preferably from a locally-owned place versus chain stores). If I could eat these two things every day and not gain an ounce, that would be heavenly.

Good luck with that. What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
When my first two novels were published, the publisher who had them started having problems (a common tale these days). They stopped publishing new titles, and became very hard to get a hold of. Although they were still “in business,” I was not receiving any monies from sales either. During this time, I acquired an agent. We both agreed that getting the rights back would be the best option, since publisher was, by that time, in breach of contract. It took well over a year to see that come to pass. Because my second book, 30 Days Hath Revenge, was the beginning of a series, it really caused issues because most publishers don’t want to reprint the first book in a series. As a result, we had to “self-publish” that book and the subsequent books in the series (I put it in quotes because it’s a bit of a different process than your typical self-pub route). My agent did find a home for my first novel, and it was reprinted by Hallway Publishing last summer.

Now, we have four books out. Book 4 of the Blake Meyer series, When the Clock Strikes Fourteen, is coming out later this year. Books 5 and 6 will complete the series in 2018.

Tell us about the featured book.
The featured book is 30 Days Hath Revenge. The overarching theme of the series is, “What is true peace?” We hear about that topic a lot these days. So did the Israelites in the days of Jeremiah…right before the Babylonians showed up. It’s this biblical scenario that has given me the bones from which to develop this story.

In my Blake Meyer Thriller Series, SSA Blake Meyer is the biggest patriot out there. He’s served his country in the military. He’s worked undercover. He has Black Ops training. And now he’s part of the FBI as a means of keeping tabs on certain people. Nobody bleeds red, white, and blue more than him.

It’s this past that raises its ugly head when a man by the name of Colin Murphy, who Blake actually worked with 15 years prior, organizes a diabolical plot to release a deadly, weaponized contagion with no known cure within the major cities of the U.S. as an act of revenge. This attack is being orchestrated by several big financial players from around the world, who are using Murphy to help bring the U.S. to its knees so it can use economic espionage to finally topple a nation they would never be able to beat militarily.

Blake is the only one who knows all about the past, and he has now been tasked by the president to lead the effort at finding the people responsible before it’s too late.

Please give us the first page of the book.
June 14
Four Years Earlier
Bunia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa
A Congolese man stumbled down a narrow, filthy alley clutching his chest. He staggered like a drunken man, bouncing back and forth off the walls like a pinball as he traversed its length.

He burst forth into a swarm of people in an open market and scanned the crowd before grabbing his head with both hands. He took a few more lumbering steps before falling face-first into the busy dirt road.

He rolled onto his back with a grimace, and his body contorted and writhed in agony. Mouthing something inaudible, he mustered the strength to flip over to his stomach.

Pounding the ground with his fist, he willed himself to his hands and knees. His labored breathing and internal pain caused his entire frame to heave in a distressed, desperate dance.

The ailing man finally rose to his feet. His well-worn clothes puffed plumes of dust as he teetered toward a passing ambulance, attempting to flag it down. Frantic but unable to wave his arms, he watched the vehicle turn the corner and disappear behind a building. He shook his head in despair and raised his arms in disbelief. Unintelligible words were overcome with tears as the man collapsed into a sobbing heap.

Seconds later, the man’s body shook with a violent force. Then, as if a great cable or rope was wrapped around his midsection, pulling him to the clouds, he arched his back and let out a horrific cry. As the man’s howl subsided, his body eased back down to the ground like a deflating balloon.

REDEEMING GRACE - Ward Tanneberg - One Free Book

Welcome back, Ward. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I enjoy reading good thrillers. Using this motif, I’ve written several inspirational thrillers, Without Warning, Vanished, Pursuit, and Redeeming Grace. Pastor John Cain and Marwan Dosha thread their way through all four books, along with new characters who are introduced and play major roles.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
The day Dixie and I were married.

How has being published changed your life?
It has opened for me a broader pulpit from which to share Christ. It involves the skills of both artist and prophet (forthtelling, not foretelling). It has offered me a platform with which to speak in a variety of ways to those who have known me through the years, as well as a new audience of readers.

Tell us about the book.
Seven years ago, Grace Grafton died in a boating accident while partying on the Georgia, South Carolina coast. Was her death the result of alcohol and drugs or something more sinister? Nobody knows. Her body was never recovered. Now years later, a woman reads in disbelief the note addressed to her: Hello Grace, did you think we wouldn’t find you?

Those nine chilling words end Grafton’s self-imposed witness protection. Now she and everyone she loves are in grave danger. Long believed dead, she has a secret that can change the world. She knows the man running for President is guilty of a double murder! But who will believe her?

Sounds very interesting. Please give us the first page of the book.

“Marry me.”

The words floated into her ear on his soft and husky whisper. She caught her breath at their sound, fueled by Brad’s intensity. Like a match to dry kindling. “Say yes, Taylor. Please, you have to say yes eventually. I’m not giving up on us.”

It was the third time he had coaxed her like this, an ardent proposal of marriage. She turned to face him, gazing into eyes that teemed with adoration.

“You know I love you, darling,” she said at last. “More than I can ever say.”

“Okay then. So what is keeping you from saying ‘yes?’” he asked, gathering her in his arms.

What is it?

A moment in time, that’s what. One she could not forget. Not ever. She wanted this man. Wanted so much to say “yes” to him. Wanted to live the rest of her life with him. In this house and in his arms. For years she had steeled herself to the fact that this could never be. Not for her, and certainly not with him. Not with any man. Yet finding Brad, getting to know him and the children these last two years, falling more deeply in love than she could ever have imagined, and right now swimming in that love’s reflection as she looked into his eyes…no more hesitation. This was it. The wall was down! Like a huge rush, the suddenness of it left her breathless. And yet …
