ROCKY MOUNTAIN REDEMPTION - Lisa J Flickinger - One Free Book

Bio: Lisa J. Flickinger lives and writes from the cliff of a river along the majestic Rocky Mountains. When not writing or reading, you will find her scouring antique shops or sipping a maple latte with friends and family. To learn more about her other books, visit www.lisajflickinger.com.

Welcome, Lisa. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
I suppose a little of myself shows up in every character I write. Most of my heroines tend to be stubborn and impulsive. According to my husband, I haven’t learned to overcome the traits in my own life.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
Hmmm, I suppose traveling through Thailand with four other women and not knowing a whole lot about what we were doing or where we were going was quirky.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
I’ve always been a reader, and I’ve always wanted to write. I didn’t actually believe I’d earned the title of writer until I sold my first manuscript at the age of forty-nine.

My first book sale was in my forties, too. Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
If I were stranded on an island, my first choice of reading material would be Victorian crime novels. I also read a lot of literary fiction and historical fiction.

I love reading historicals, and I write a lot of historicals. How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
I walk outdoors. There’s a trail along the river behind our home where you can see the peaks of the Rockies. The view helps to keep me focused on what’s really important.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
I scour census records, passenger lists, baby names, etc., from the year I’m writing until one strikes me. I have also featured my grandchildren’s names for several characters.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
I’m so proud my husband and I have three children who have become beautiful kind adults.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
Here’s hoping I never become an animal.

What is your favorite meal?
My favorite meal is a delicious honey ham with scalloped potatoes and a crisp Caesar salad. A serving of Crème Brulee would make for a delicious finish to the meal.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
Until now, managing my time was my greatest roadblock. I overcame it by setting daily goals on paper and putting them next to my computer. Lately, I have discovered pandemics are a HUGE roadblock, as to overcoming one…

Tell us about the featured book.
A Rocky Mountain logging camp may be just the place to find herself. To escape the devastation caused by the breaking of her wedding engagement, Isabelle Franklin joins her aunt in the Rocky Mountains to feed a camp of lumberjacks cutting on the slopes of Cougar Ridge. If only she could outrun the lingering nightmares.

Charles Bailey, camp foreman and Stony Creek's itinerant pastor, develops a reputation to match his new nickname—Preach.  However, an inner battle ensues when the details of his rough history threaten to overcome the beliefs of his young faith.

Amid the hazards of camp life, the unlikely friendship growing between the two surprises Isabelle. She's drawn to Preach's brute strength and gentle nature as he leads the ragtag crew toiling for Pollitt's Lumber. But when the ghosts from her past return to haunt her, the choices she will make change the course of her life forever—and that of the man she's come to love.

Please give us the first page of the book.
1898
THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS
Isabelle slid the moist length of potato peel between the thumb and forefinger of each hand and stretched her arms apart as it unfurled. One handbreadth longer than yesterday’s best. Six months ago, she couldn’t have imagined being hidden away in a lumber camp and performing such tedious work.

Thanks be, the trembling in her fingers remained minimal. Doctor Bradley, a frequent visitor to Isabelle’s second-story bedroom before she’d been dropped at the camp, had advised her parents the tremors would subside as she regained her health. It appeared he’d been correct.

Isabelle tossed the peel on the mound atop the long table serving as a work counter in the center of the kitchen and wiped her hands on the white muslin apron at her waist. The potatoes were a treat usually reserved for the weekends, a welcome break from the enormous iron pots of beans. The logging camp’s twenty-one men tucked away an astounding volume of food Aunt Lou and Isabelle prepared and served every morning and every night. Why had Father thought such tedious work would cure what ailed her?

THE LOST LIEUTENANT - Erica Vetsch - One Free Book

Welcome back, Erica. Tell us about your salvation experience.
I grew up in a believing home, and at age 11, after hearing the gospel in Sunday School yet again, I believed in my need for Jesus as my Savior.

You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?
OOO, this is a tough one because I have so many author friends. I will stick to ones that I have been on a writing retreat with before: Gabrielle Meyer, because she never runs out of things to talk about, Mary Connealy, because she is awesome to retreat with, Ruth Logan Hearne, because she is a terrific cook (her bread pudding is phenomenal) and Jan Drexler, because her son is marrying my daughter this summer, and we can talk about them. J

I love the idea of that wedding. How fun. Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.
I don’t have a speaking ministry, though I do love teaching writing workshops.

Teaching workshops is just as important as speaking. People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
Write it! Just start. It’s okay if you don’t know what you’re doing at first. But learn. Read writing how-to books, blogs, articles. And keep writing your book. Lots of people want to write books, but actual writers do the work! Jump in!

Tell us about the featured book.
The Lost Lieutenant is the first book in the Serendipity and Secrets series.

He's doing what he can to save the Prince Regent's life . . . but can he save his new marriage as well?

Evan Eldridge never meant to be a war hero—he just wanted to fight Napoleon for the future of his country. And he certainly didn't think that saving the life of a peer would mean being made the Earl of Whitelock. But when the life you save is dear to the Prince Regent, things can change in a hurry.

Now Evan has a new title, a manor house in shambles, and a stranger for a bride, all thrust upon him by a grateful ruler. What he doesn't have are all his memories. Traumatized as a result of his wounds and bravery on the battlefield, Evan knows there's something he can't quite remember. It's important, dangerous—and if he doesn't recall it in time, will jeopardize not only his marriage but someone's very life.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Seaton Estate Berkshire,
England
January 4, 1813
“You’ll do as you’re told if you know what’s good for you. I won’t be humiliated again.”

Diana Seaton gripped the back of the chair she stood behind, grateful to have the piece of furniture between her and her father. Red suffused his face, and his eyes glittered. He paced the oriental rug in front of the fireplace in the drawing room of Seaton Manor. She gathered her courage. “But wouldn’t it be better if I remained here this Season? I could look after Cian—”

“Do not mention that name here. Not his and not his trollop of a mother’s.” The Duke of Seaton halted his pacing and jabbed his beringed finger toward Diana. Her pleas wadded into a lump in her throat, and fierce tears pricked her eyes.

Her half sister, Catherine, hadn’t been a trollop. She’d been an innocent, a naïve debutante taken advantage of by a true rake and scoundrel—a mistake that, had word gotten out, would’ve cost her reputation, and in the end had cost her life. But Diana knew better than to protest aloud to her father.

ROMANIAN RUNAWAY - Kelley Rene - One Free Book

Welcome back, Kelley. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
Life is hard. We’re all on a journey. I write stories to encourage, teach, inspire, and let others know they’re not alone in their struggles.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
The day I married my best friend, Steven. He completes me and I’m eternally grateful for the love and devotion he’s given through the years.

How has being published changed your life?
Being published has given me a voice and platform to share my heart and love for people. It has given me a newfound confidence and conviction to reach others with stories of hope.

What are you reading right now?
Currently, I’m reading Star of Persia by Jill Eileen Smith. On Audible, I’m listening to The Story Keeper by Lisa Wingate. And I’m studying Save The Cat! Write A Novel by Jessica Brody.

What is your current work in progress?
My current work-in-progress is entitled In Search of Trinity. It’s the fictional story of a college freshman who gives birth to a baby in her bedroom. She and her father, the community’s philanthropic abortionist, have planned out her future, including her role as director of the women’s clinic upon his retirement. Jenna must decide what to do with the child if she is to stick with their plan, leading her on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance.

What would be your dream vacation?
I’ve been blessed to live abroad and travel a lot. Usually I would answer London, Rome, or Hawaii. But currently I’m longing to visit Israel to walk the steps of Jesus. I want to see and experience the New Testament as only one can in the Holy Land.

I’ve always wanted to go to Israel, too. How do you choose your settings for each book?
I’m often inspired by destinations in which I live or visit. Sometimes a specific location will spark my imagination and a story is born.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
Ah. It is very difficult for me to pick just one. I’m intrigued by so many people. But if I can choose only one, I’d love to spend an evening with Christine Caine. Her book, Undaunted, really spoke healing to my heart and gave me the courage to step out of my comfort zone. I’d love to hear more about the A21 campaign, founded by Christine and her husband to rescue those enslaved by human trafficking.

She’s spoken at several women’s conferences at Gateway, and she’s also preached on the weekend several times as well. Maybe she’ll come again. What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
I love to crochet, walk my dog, ride my bicycle, travel, and cuddle my new grandbaby.

She sure is cute. What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
Fear of rejection and negativity. At this point, I’ve decided I am going to write. The next hurdle is overcoming the overwhelming concern of what others will think. I’m learning there will always be someone who dislikes or disagrees with you. As long as I’ve written words that convey my convictions, are grammatically correct, and inspire others, I choose to be proud of it, regardless of the naysayers.

A very good choice and a hard one for many authors. What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Sit down and put words to paper. You’ll never be able to edit and improve until you start writing. Read books that teach writing technique. Get involved in writing circles: a local critique group, author’s conference, or Facebook groups geared toward writing are great places to start.

Tell us about the featured book.

A New Future

I stood at the door of the nursery remembering the day I meticulously painted the words Love you to the moon and back on the wall above the crib. Two playful elephants danced alongside the calligraphy.

The unused wooden crib, matching changing table, and chest of drawers lined the pale green room. Stuffed animals, each one representing an infant not meant-to-be, onesies, bows, baby booties, diaper bag, and diaper genie filled the remaining space. All received with love and enthusiasm.

And yet the room remained empty. Void. Just like my heart.

At the last positive pregnancy test, I pulled nothing out. It all stayed packed in the closet along with my hope and despair.

I wanted one last photo but knew the fifty frames already taken would suffice.

Sal came up behind and wrapped his arms around mine. “Are you all right?”

“Yeah.” Joy mixed with a hint of sadness flooded my eyes. “I never thought giving away all our baby items would feel so good.”

“Ashley and John are happy.” He spoke as if we were old friends with the young buyers of our home.

They hadn’t seemed impressed with the property until reaching the baby’s room.

“John!” The girl gasped. She plopped her ballooning belly into a rocker, propping two thick ankles on the footstool. A single pink ribbon tied in a bow around the armrest bobbled in a gust of air from an overhead vent. As if energized by the blast, she popped up to inspect the rest of the baby furniture. Her puffy hand ran across the pad of the baby changer as she tilted slightly to inspect the wood.

“They’re brand new. Never used.” For the first time, the words didn’t sting. Excitement and adrenaline crowded out the numbing truth.

TARBOX STATION - Rhonda Eudaly - One Free Book

Welcome, Rhonda. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
Tricky question. Early on it was a lot. Probably more than I should. And it depends on how you mean writing me in. If we’re talking issues that I’m dealing with – that will probably never change, yes, I’ll write my challenges into characters to shine lights and maybe work through them. If the question means me physically, I aim write less of ME that way and add more diversity – because, honestly, other people are more interesting than I am.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
Quirky? Hmm…that’s tough. I’ve had a relatively random life experience. Under category of “dumb things I’ve done because of X”… I was part of a bowling league for a year. I am athletically…challenged. When we were asked what our team handicap was, I raised my hand. I was that bad.

In terms of “Odd”, I worked with a couple of Christian radio stations back in the day. One was Urban Gospel and I was able to go to the Dove Awards to help out. The station was new and basically I went up to almost every artist I didn’t already know and ask, “Are you someone I should know, and do you want to be interviewed on our station.” That’s how I met Al Green.

You have had some interesting experiences. When did you first discover that you were a writer?
I was about 10 years old. We were living in a smallish Missouri town in a bizarre house that looking back on probably would’ve starred in its own horror movie. It stood in its own space between some car lots, a moving company, and a garage. No other residential houses for quite a ways, so I read a lot of books – old kids mysteries mostly – Nancy Drew, Bobbsey Twins, Trixie Belden – and played a lot of Barbies. And one day thought, “I could do this.” And never looked back.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
I love genre books. Almost all of the styles that literature looks down on: Science Fiction, Fantasy (lighter and more adventurous than dark/dystopian stuff), suspense, mystery, thriller, romance. I’ll read some horror/dark stuff, but I like fun and light a lot more. I like humor elements in the books I read because the world is too dark as it is. But most important, I love a good character-driven book. If I can’t bring myself to care about a character? I’m done with the book.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
Oh, I’m amused that you think that I have! Just kidding. In all seriousness, in the last six months I’ve started seeing a counselor. Sometimes God’s answers to prayers about our cares and concerns is to get professional help.

That is very true. How do you choose your characters’ names?
Once or twice I have searched out names with meaning that I want portrayed by the character. But I’ve also made use of some databases I’ve had access too over the years to pull random names – people name their kids the most bizarre things – and keep a file/list of them. Other times? I just scroll through social media and pick names at random.

Character names and Titles are the hardest!

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Oh, my. That’s hard. Writing side of life? I am part of an anthology where all the stories are about characters I created. It’s the most surreal thing ever.

I wrote a short story with two made-up Greek gods – the story didn’t sell to the anthology that I originally wrote it for, but was sold to a online ’zine that went under. Another editor heard the whole story and thought it should be its own anthology and somehow got 10 other writers to make up stories about these two guys. And I was asked to write the introduction. So weird, but so awesome.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
A dog who was raised by a cat. I have a lot of loyalty and love for my “pack.” I like walkies and treats and curling up on a blanket with the fireplace. All good dog traits. But I also am introverted enough that I want about five “pets” before I swipe the hand. And I have a massive independent streak.

What is your favorite food?
Science Fiction/Fantasy and Western artist, Darryl K. Sweet once told me he would “eat anything that didn’t eat me first.” I embrace that. My mom taught me to try everything at least once. I don’t have to like it all, or finish it, but I have to try it. To that end I find something to like about all food. But you can’t go wrong with pizza and ice cream…or coffee…or dark chocolate.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
The great battle of “Coulda/Shoulda/Woulda” – all the things that I COULD be doing, SHOULD be doing, or OUGHT to be doing. When I was younger I had some financial instability. When I was writing I should be finding a job or should be an adult about stuff.

Now that I have a stable job and financial security, when that job gets busy and overwhelming (which it does regularly) I still feel those same obstacles only – I know I’m super tired because I worked 14 hours, but I should be writing. I could write during lunch instead of eating with my teammates and working out a problem.

How do I overcome them? Sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I just have to let it go. But I also try to make more reasonable goals. Write a page or a few hundred words a day more consistently and try not to beat myself up too much if I don’t live up to what other writers do.

That’s a lesson all writers need to learn. Don’t compare yourself to others. Compare yourself to what you were at some time in the past and see how much you have improved. Tell us about the featured book.
Tarbox Station is a Space Opera – which is adventure in space, like Star Wars or Star Trek – it has elements of romance and thriller/intrigue while being contained on a space station.

An alien delegation comes to our station with secrets and with a threat. Our heroine, Emma McDonald, is a diplomatic envoy who has a stalker that’s followed them and threatening her, the delegation, and the station. They have to find out who’s behind this and stop him or her from killing her or anyone.

Please give us the first page of the book.
"Imminent hull breach on Deck Thirty Two."

"Initiate emergency procedures." Commander Richard Daniels barely glanced at the VIPs with him. He scanned the confusion around him until a uniformed guard crossed his field of vision. He snapped out an arm to catch the young officer.

"Sir?"

"Escort the Barzon delegation to their transport. Make sure they board their ship and depart."

"Yes, sir."

"But, Commander, Tarbox Station isn't expecting..." said the spunky, human woman standing next to Daniels.

"Ms. McDonald! This station is now in a Condition Red alert. My first priority is for the safety of my outpost, and not what inconveniences someone else. I enjoyed meeting you. Goodbye and good luck. Please get off my outpost so I don't have to worry about the entire United Systems Concorde coming down on my back for losing a diplomatic delegation."

Daniels waved the security guard forward despite Emma's indignant sputtering. He waited only long enough to see the young man crowd her away without actually touching her. Then he hurried off in the opposite direction. Now he could focus his attention to maintaining the structural integrity of his outpost.

THE STORY OF MRS. INEZ - Madeline Wolfe - One Free print or Ebook

Welcome, Madeline. What has drawn you to writing for children?
As a former teacher, I saw how books had the ability to pull children in and make abstract concepts more understandable. They’re a great way to start a heavy discussion when we (adults) don’t quite have the words.

I love your headshot. What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
I went to California on a whim and convinced my sister to join me. I was twenty. I decided on Wednesday I wanted to go, and we left two days later. We were broke and slept in Walmart parking lots or cheap hotels in the seedy areas of whatever town we passed through.

My sister and I couldn’t bear the sight of each other for a couple weeks after the trip, but it was by far one of my favorite memories.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
I wouldn’t have used the term writer until about a year and a half ago. I’ve been an avid reader forever and have always connected with the written word, but I hesitated to use that term until recently.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
I appreciate and collect good picture books, especially when they have a good message. I also love historical fiction, science fiction, and Christian romance. I’m not a big fan of nonfiction, but I do try to fit that in from time to time.

My all-time favorite is YA fiction. I especially love the fantasy and dystopian genres.

What other books have you written, whether published or not?
My current work in progress is a YA realistic novel—that’s the only other book I’ve written. Well, the story is finished, I’m just working on revising and editing. I’m hoping it will be published by the end of the year.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
Each morning is spent with the Lord—that’s the most important thing I do to stay sane.

Other regular activities include working out, date nights with my husband, and trying to digitally unplug at least an hour before bed either by journaling and reading.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of, besides family?
That would probably be running a marathon. Well, I wouldn’t say “running” per se. It was more like walking/crawling/stumbling, but I finished! It was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
It would probably be a fruit bat. They’re nocturnal, migratory, have a great diet, and people think they’re scary, so they’re left alone. They can’t see well, but that wouldn’t be a big adjustment for me.

What is your favorite food?
Eggrolls—any flavor!

Is it hard to break into the children’s market?
Yes. The market is flooded, so it’s difficult to come up with a unique story and get noticed. I did a lot of research prior to going through the Indie-publishing route, and many traditional publishers say they’re not interested in these types of books.

Some people are successful with them, but I reached out to a few and never heard anything.

What advice would you give to an author wanting to do that?
First, I would say that if you have an idea for book, write it. I held on to my concept for years before gaining the confidence to put pen to paper. Don’t do that.

I finally decided to do go for it because I thought it might help others. If my book connects with just one person, it was all worth it.

The next step is understanding the publishing process (do your research), but don’t get overwhelmed by it. That’s what I did! Take it a step at a time. Remember Dory from Finding Nemo—just keep swimming!

What would you like to tell us about the featured book?
The people who have read my book don’t always get the same thing from it. But I wanted it to work on many levels.

My desire was that people who had family members with Alzheimer’s or dementia knew they weren’t alone.

I also want each of us to look at our elders and understand the value and depth they bring to our families and our communities.

I also want us all to be aware that the small piece we see of a person doesn’t accurately reflect the richness of their life experience.

It’s a good thing to teach these concepts to children at a young age, as you are in the book. How can readers find you on the Internet?

HOPE IN THE MOUNTAIN RIVER - Misty M Beller - One Free Book

Bio: Misty M. Beller is a USA Today bestselling author of romantic mountain stories, set on the 1800s frontier and woven with the truth of God’s love.

She was raised on a farm in South Carolina, so her Southern roots run deep. Growing up, her family was close, and they continue to keep that priority today. Her husband and children now add another dimension to her life, keeping her both grounded and crazy.

God has placed a desire in Misty's heart to combine her love for Christian fiction and the simpler ranch life, writing historical novels that display God's abundant love through the twists and turns in the lives of her characters.

Welcome back, Misty. You have a lot of books out now. What is your favorite setting to use in your books?
The mountains! Specifically, the Rocky Mountains. J Almost all of my books are set somewhere in the Rockies (with the exception of my Texas Rancher Trilogy). I’ve always loved the mountains, but I first realized how much I love setting books there when I was writing The Lady and the Mountain Man, which mostly takes place in a remote log cabin a few hours’ ride from Butte, Montana. Since then, I’ve set many of my stories in locations that would become part of Montana or Alberta, Canada. The majesty of the mountains there is too beautiful for words to describe, but I love to try!

What do you look for when you’re shopping for a book to buy for yourself?
I’m one of those people who auto-buys books by all my favorite authors without even reading the book description. Most of my fiction reading is Christian romance, either historical or contemporary, but my one major requirement is that the book has to be available on audiobook. Sigh. Yes, with four young kiddos and a full-time writing schedule, I’m afraid the only way I get to read much anymore is listening to audiobooks while I’m getting things done around the house. The great news is that SO many books are available on audio now, both from traditional publishers and individual authors, so the selection continues to grow! J

Yes, that’s why I have had several of my books turned into audiobooks. Give us a little tour of the setting for this book.
I’m SO glad you asked, because I’m super excited about the setting for this series! J Hope in the Mountain River is book 2 in the Call of the Rockies series, and both of the first two books follow the trail Lewis and Clark’s expedition took through what would later become Montana. This book in particular follows their journey over the Lolo Trail through one of the most treacherous parts of the Rockies. It’s a good thing Joel (our hero) and his group met Elan (our heroine) and her friend to help guide them through the only navigable parts!

What other books do you have coming out soon?
My next release is Love’s Mountain Quest, book 2 in the Hearts of Montana series being published by Bethany House. I can’t wait to finally share this story with readers! It’s a fast-paced story of a young widow whose 5-year-old son is kidnapped by a gang near the little mountain town of Settler’s Fort. She enlists the help of a mountain man to track down the band and free her boy, but the mission turns out to be a bit more than either of them bargains for. The book releases on June 30th, which will be here soon!
After that, book 3 of the Call of the Rockies series releases on September 29th. I’m almost finished writing that story now, and I’m absolutely loving the journey I’m traveling with the characters! J

I’m eagerly awaiting the release of Love’s Mountain Quest. Please give us a glimpse inside your home.
Sure! Let me just pick up all the kids’ toys and close the laundry room door first. J Our home is a little bit eclectic, as I’m a lover of all things antique or western…and we have four kids that range in age from 10 months to twelve years. We do have a formal living room with two antique sofas, but it also doubles as our family room, so I’ve learned not to hold the beautiful furniture too close to my heart. Each time the dog chews on one of the chair legs or the kids spill a drink in a place they weren’t supposed to have that drink to begin with, I smile and remind myself it’s only things. The people and memories are what matter.

We do have a number of furniture pieces that have been handed down in the family that I try to guard more closely—the dining room table that was the first set my husband’s parents bought after they were married, the corner cabinets his grandfather built and carved by hand, and others!

We served as a shepherding home for young women who wanted to keep their baby instead of having an abortion. During that time, accidents happened that destroyed some things dear to me. It was at that time I chose to never let things be more important than people. Is this novel part of a series or a stand-alone book?
Hope in the Mountain River is book 2 in the Call of the Rockies series, but it does stand alone if anyone hasn’t read the first book. If you do get a chance to read book 1 (Freedom in the Mountain Wind), I think you’ll love seeing the journey continue with Joel and Elan’s story!

I loved Freedom in the Mountain Wind. Tell us about Hope in the Mountain River.
I’d love to!

Back cover blurb:
This epic journey is not at all what she expected.
Joel Vargas can’t believe he’s lost his older brother in the wilds of the Rocky Mountains after surviving their harrowing voyage across the Atlantic. And he can’t shake the feeling that Adam—his only living relative—is in dire trouble. No matter what the cost, he and his band of friends won’t stop until Adam is found. He’s not sure if two Indian women they meet on the way will be a help or hindrance.

After the devastating loss of her daughter and husband to a grizzly attack, Elan is desperate to find an escape from her grief. As she and her friend journey from their Nez Perce camp, through the mountains and toward the great river, a band of white men is the last thing she expects to find, especially as winter blows in full force.

When the dangers increase, accomplishing Joel’s mission becomes the only hope for all their survival. If the elements don’t consume them, Elan has a feeling life will never be the same for any of them.
From a USA Today bestselling author comes another epic journey through breathless landscapes and intense adventure.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Bitterroot Mountains, Future Montana Territory
“Is he friend or enemy?” Elan’s blood pounded through her veins as it did when the warriors from her tribe struck their targets with tomahawks—blow upon blow, louder and louder with each passing moment. She pulled her furs tighter around her shivering shoulders against the bitter wind whipping down the mountainside.

“I can’t tell. They’re…” Her faithful friend Meksem paused, then a tiny gasp slipped from her mouth in an icy cloud. “It’s a white man.” The shock in her voice thrust the words to a dangerously loud whisper.

“A French trapper?” Elan softened her own tone so she didn’t alert the stranger of their presence. The trappers were the only soyapo who ever came to the Bitterroot Mountains. White people, they called themselves, from the northern country. She’d heard them speak of a place called Canada. Enough of these men had visited their camp that she’d become accustomed to their strange manners and learned some of their words.

“I don’t know. There are two of them. No…” Another pause.

If only she had a clear view herself. Elan forced her legs to relax around her horse’s sides. Everything in her wanted to ride the few steps forward beside her friend and peek through the trees to see the outsiders for herself.
