PLAIN PROMISE - Beth Wiseman - Free Book

So good to have you back, Beth. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?

Just this past week, I signed two more contracts with Thomas Nelson Publishing, so as of now, there are 13 books on the horizon – 10 full-length books and 3 novellas. I’m very excited to be a part of the Thomas Nelson family well into the year 2013.

That is really exciting. I rejoice with you. Tell us a little about your family.

My oldest son, Eric, just graduated with his masters degree in music performance and accepted a job as a professor of music in Houston. My ‘baby’ Cory is almost 18 and plans to start college in January. My sons are my greatest blessings from God. I have a wonderful husband. And – I should add, he’s very romantic. I just turned in book #4 in the Daughters of the Promise series, Plain Paradise, to my editor. In the story, my young Amish fellow writes poems to his girlfriend, and those poems are actually fragments of poems that my husband has written to me. Oh, I can’t leave out our other family members. There’s our Lab, Chloe, and Blue, our Blue Heeler, and Kiki, our diabetic cat, and Katie, our other sweet kitty.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?

Unfortunately, I just don’t have as much time to read as I would like. I always ‘plan’ to read at night, but some nights I’m just too tired or I want to spend time with my family. I have a pile of books sitting next to me. I start with the ones I’ve promised to read for an endorsement, then slowly work my way through them. I think I’m pickier about what I read now since my time is limited.

What are you working on right now?

Top secret project. Seriously.

If you tell me, you'd have to kill me, right? What outside interests do you have?

Huh? If outside interests are allowed, no one told me. Oh, I’m kidding. I love to cook. I used to play tennis every day, but my sister-in-law had to stop playing because of scheduling conflicts. It’s her fault I am gaining weight. If I had any free time, I’d put a big easel outside and paint. I’m terrible at it, but I love it.

Painting is therapeutic, isn't it? Even if we aren't good artists. How do you choose your settings for each book?

To date, my books have all been set in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. I visit there as often as possible. Once the characters start to talk to me, they usually describe their homes in detail. “I said there are two rockers on the porch, not four.”

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?

Jesus. The ‘why’ is probably clear.

He could also be considered a contemporary person. What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?

That everything happens on God’s timeframe. To worry and get upset about it is pointless.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?

Oh, Lena…there are so many. I guess you could say that through these books I seem to be going through my own spiritual cleansing. Miracles abound, and I am more blessed than I deserve.

Aren't we all? What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?

Pray. Never give up. And when God blesses you beyond your highest expectations, remember to thank Him every single day.

Tell us about the featured book?

From the back cover:

Young Amish widow, Sadie Fisher, leads a simple life in the quiet countryside of Lancaster County--selling Amish goods to a steady stream of tourists. Though it is a good life, lately she's wondered if it is God's will for her to remain without a husband and a family.

Winters can be brutally cold and lonely in Pennsylvania, so Sadie rejoices when a renter signs up for a solid three month stay in her guest cottage. But when wealthy impulsive Englischer Kade Saunders arrives, Sadie isn't sure she wants him around that long. Sadie feels the stress of the bishop's watchful eye, expecting Sadie to act in accordance with the Ordnung, the understood behavior by which the Amish live. To complicate things, Kade is soon surprised with sole custody of a child he barely knows, his five-year-old autistic son, Tyler.

Sadie and young Tyler form an immediate connection. As she grows to love and understand this exceptional child, her feelings for Kade grow into something that both terrifies and exhilarates her. And while Kade seems to feel the attraction to her as well, their worlds couldn't be farther apart.

Sadie must stay true to her Amish roots, but denying the love she feels is impossible. Could it be that God has the improbable in store for Sadie? And will she have the faith to step into a love bigger than she’s ever dreamed possible?

The book includes Reading Group Guide and authentic Old Order Amish recipes.

Please give us the first page of the book.

The den in the old farmhouse was the coziest room in the house, but a nip still hung in the air. Sadie pulled her sweater from the rack on the wall and tossed another log onto the fire, orange sparks shimmying up the chimney. She walked to the window, raised the green blind, and looked toward the guest cottage about a hundred feet away. She couldn’t help but recall the hours she and Ben had spent restoring it five years ago, painting the whitewashed walls, installing carpet, and making it fit for use by the Englisch.

Sadie was glad when Bishop Ebersol allowed her to furnish the cottage with electricity last year for use as a rental property. Her current renter had come all the way from Los Angeles, his long, sleek automobile now crowding the inside of her barn. But she was grateful for the income. It had been difficult to make ends meet with Ben gone, though her Old Order Amish community never let her go without.

This time of year, men in the district made sure she had plenty of firewood and kept the snow cleared from her driveway. In the spring and summer, the womenfolk kept her supplied with fresh peas and corn from the family crops, but Sadie, a fit woman at age thirty, kept a small garden on her own.

I can see how this book would hold lots of internal conflict. How can readers find you on the Internet?

A CASE OF THE HEART - Beth Shriver - Free Book

We really enjoyed learning about your YA novel earlier this month. Now you're back with an adult romance. Welcome, Beth. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.

In this book, A Case of the Heart, there was a lot of me in the book. I used to be a CPS worker and wanted to share some of my experiences. In my YA, Love at first Flight, There was a lot of my daughter in the character. From there all of my characters have become unique, not like me but maybe people I’d like to be.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?

As far as writing goes, I read the obituaries. And for awhile I made it a daily habit which eventually led to a story I’ve been working on titled, The Funeral Hopper. It’s a fun read with very unique characters. You never know where your quirks may take you.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?

I didn't start writing until 2003, and I was never one of those kids who hid under the covers at night to read after bedtime, or started writing my first novel at age five! No, I began writing articles for inspirational magazines because I thought I had something to say and wanted to share with others. An author friend of mine read my articles and encouraged me to write a book. That book was, Love at First Flight, yep, my very first manuscript. Then came the memories of my social work years and, A Case of the Heart, was created, and I've written six more. For me, writing is all about life experiences on steroids. Each situation, conversation or feeling is heightened to give everyday situations a fun, new kick:)

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.

I don’t have any particular genre that I like, maybe historical if I had to choose, but I like to read all types of books and see everything that’s out there. I’ve been surprised at some of the books I’ve really enjoyed that I never thought I’d like. When you see all the different genres I write in you’ll understand my tendency to jump around a lot. It’s all about the story not the category for me.

What other books have you written, whether published or not?

I have written a historical, Remnant of the Fall, women’s fiction, Reclaiming Tess, urban fantasy, Fear of Falling, and an Amish, Annie’s Truth. Presently I’m writing another YA.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?

Sanity can be a tricky thing for writers who live in another world for a good part of their day. I try and keep my quiet time each morning a priority and if I follow through with that my day seems to start out right. I’m a runner, have been for 15 years which helps relieve everyday stress. I also rely on a circle of girlfriends who are always there for me to cry to or play with. My family is very supportive as well.

How do you choose your characters’ names?

Sometimes I go with someone I know, but most of the time I try and find a name that would fit the character, something unique or different. I like to research names, especially when I was writing my historical. Names in ancient times have a lot of meaning to them which I found interesting.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?

What I’m most proud of is that I’m doing something I never thought I would, writing. As I mentioned previously creating a full-length story was never something I’d even thought of doing until I moved to Texas. I had a hard time with the adjustment moving from Colorado but I found comfort and a way to express myself with writing and a connection that made me feel whole again.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?

When we were in Carmel, California, I loved watching the otters play with each other in the waves and lie on their backs and eat crabs. Playing and eating are good, so I think an otter is the way to go for me.

What is your favorite food?

Sushi. Goes with the otter thing.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?

I am not an English major, teacher or experienced writer, so I had to learn from scratch. I found the process daunting because all I wanted to do was write the story in my head. But I learned how important the basics are and have grown with each manuscript I’ve written in my mechanics and basic skills as a writer.

What advice would you give to an author just starting out?

It’s hard to break into the market. It’s all about timing, finding an editor who likes your writing and perseverance.

Tell us about the featured book?

Liz, a spirited and compassionate social worker, has one of the roughest beats in Denver. Officer Alex Demas has bailed Liz out of more than one tough situation, and his attraction for her is building. When one of her clients is caught up in a drug ring, Liz and Alex must face what lies between them and snare the drug dealer before he finds her client.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Liz never liked getting to the destination before the cop, especially in this part of town. Fortunately, even though these were non-emergency after-hour calls, social workers usually had Denver PD assist them at night.

She checked the car doors to make sure they were locked, and then sank down in her seat to survey the house. She could see occasional movement in the upstairs room. A black silhouette passed by through a burnt orange curtain.

Liz scanned the area. The houses had been converted to multiple occupancy; lawns were neglected; torn shutters hung from dirty windows. Aged paint blistered and chipped off the siding. The streets were littered with old cars, some parked in driveways, others in yards.
There was a little moisture from an earlier snow, and a cold wind was picking up. It was otherwise quiet and still except for two bundled-up figures walking away from her up the street into the dark night.

She reached forward to start the car for some heat when she caught a flash of blue lights in her rearview mirror to see a black and white pulled up behind her.

An officer got out and started to walk over. She observed the confident stride, the nice physique.

Yep, it was him. She took a look in the rearview mirror to do a quick check of her appearance.
She squeezed her cheeks to add some color and opened her eyes wide, pressing lightly on her lashes to curl them back. She ran her fingers through her brown hair, twirling it into a twist and then stuck it into a clip. Liz kept thinking throughout the entire ritual of how pathetic she was.
She rolled down her window and looked into the handsome face of Alex Demas. He was one of her favorite cops and had been with Liz on some of her toughest calls.

He leaned into the window, the streetlight shimmering in his blue eyes. He ran his fingers through his dark hair as he fixed his gaze on her.

Sounds really interesting. Now, Beth, how can readers find you on the Internet?

A BRIDE OF HONOR - Ruth Axtell Morren - Free Book

I'm glad to have you back on my blog, Ruth. Why do you write the kind of books you do?

Because these are the kinds of stories I most enjoy reading: historical romances with lots of dialogue between the hero and heroine.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?

Holding my first born in my arms...after a long labor.

How has being published changed your life?

It has shown me what so many published writers before me have discovered: it's only the beginning of a whole new journey.

What are you reading right now?

I just finished Golden Keyes Parson's Prisoner of Versailles. I'm currently reading The Victorian Internet, a history of telegraphy; Victorian London: The Tale of a City 1840-1870 (can you tell I'm researching a Victorian story?), and Susan Page Davis's Hearts in the Crosshairs,a Love Inspired Suspense.

What is your current work in progress?

I'm working on a Love Inspired Historical, a late Victorian story set in London.

We'll need to feature it here when it comes out. What would be your dream vacation?

Going on a research trip to wherever I have a story idea for. Scotland would be nice.

How do you choose your settings for each book?

Some ideas just come to me, a lot of times from a dream. Others come when I'm researching a current historical. I'll read about some historical event or character that will intrigue me.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?

President Obama. I think he is a person for 'such a time as this,' and I would love to talk to him about his vision for this nation.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?

I have no time for hobbies at this point in my life. I walk almost every day, drawing inspiration from the beautiful Maine coastline and forests. I also like to garden, both flower and vegetable. When I do have time for hobbies again, I can envision taking up knitting once more, going on short-term missions trips, and doing more community work.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?

Getting distracted by all the other things that need doing on my desk (or in my e-mailbox) or around the house (or outside in the yard). I just get to a point where I have to bite the bullet and just focus on whatever phase of the story I'm in. At this moment, it's the research and laying the groundwork for my current project.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?

Have a reliable source of income (whether your own or your spouse's), b/c breaking into a stable writing career is a loooooong, slow process, getting harder every day.

Tell us about the featured book?

A Bride of Honor is a story I got the idea for while writing The Making of a Gentleman. TMOAG is about a spinster. ABOH is her brother's story. He appears in TMOAG although both stories stand alone. He is one of those souls for whom it seems very easy to be a committed, devoted Christian. I began wondering what would make it difficult for him to follow the straight and narrow.

Please give us the first page of the book.

London, April 1812
“I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart.” Damien paused in the reading of the scripture and looked from the pulpit to the congregation below him.

St. George's Chapel was filled to overflowing. Not due solely to his preaching, unfortunately, although his flock had been growing steadily in the last few years since he'd been curate there.
No, it was not the service or his preaching that brought most people out this Sunday to morning prayer, but scandal.

Damien's glance strayed to the chancel where his sister sat beside her intended. Jonah Quinn, a man who'd escaped the gallows and been a fugitive from the law, had only last week received a royal pardon from the prince regent himself.

I'm totally intrigued. How can readers find you on the Internet?

Either on my website: http://www.ruthaxtellmorren.com/
or blogspot, http://ruthaxtellmorren.blogspot.com/
or just look me up on Amazon or one of the other bookstore sites.

LOVE FINDS YOU IN NORTH POLE, ALASKA - Loree Lough - Free book

I'm thrilled to welcome you back, Loree. Why do you write the kinds of books you do?

Over the years, I’ve entertained the idea of writing secular fiction, and to date, I’ve only had one of those published. It sold relatively well, but my ‘fan mail’ couldn’t even begin to compete with letters from readers of my Christian novels. Each correspondence makes it more clear than the last: This is what the Good Lord wants me to do.

Besides when you came to know the lord, what is the happiest day in your life?

Wow, is that a loaded question! I’ve been blessed with many ‘happiest days’: My wedding, the birth of my kids, the arrival of each grandchild…. Choosing one just isn’t possible!

How has being published changed your life?

Eeeek! Another loaded question! Having books on the shelves is yet another example of ‘happiest day’ blessings. But I suppose being a published author changes me…because it changes readers…which changes me even more! Each time God graces me with a storyline and characters, He allows me to share His message with a variety of readers. Some have followed Him all of their lives. Others are new arrivals on The Path of Faith. A few are backsliders, reminded how much He loves His children through the actions and reactions of those who people my books.

What are you reading right now?

Just finished reading books by two dear friends who are also Summerside authors: Miracle, KY by Andrea Boeshaar and Snowball, AR by Sandie Bricker. I can’t wait to get my hands on all the other books in the Love Finds You series!

I know many readers of my blog are collecting all the Love Finds You books. What is your current work in progress?

Right now, I’m working on four different things at once! First, I’m finishing up Love Finds You in Paradise, Pennsylvania (an April ’09 Summerside release). I’m adding snippets to a non-fiction gardening book, and a devotional. And adding chapters to a thriller, and a romantic suspense.

What would be your dream vacation?

No question about it: I’d return to Ireland! Of all the places I’ve visited, the Emerald Isle is the one I’d most like to see again. And again. The land and sea vistas, the people, the windblown spindrift call to me…and someday soon, I hope to answer!

How do you choose the settings for each book?

Every author has their own style, of course. In my case, stories start with some event that ‘speaks’ to me. Maybe I’ll overhear a conversation at a local eatery. Or I’ll read something in the newspaper. Someone might call to share good news…or bad…. Soon afterward, while I’m doing some mindless chore, my strange brain will ask “Okay, so there’s the nut of the thing, but what if…?” Pretty soon, I’ve got a couple people acting out roles in the story, and since I can’t let the float aimlessly, I have to find a fitting ‘place’ for them, so they can live the lives I’ll create for them. For me, ‘setting’ is almost a character, itself!

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be, and why?

I think a couple of uninterrupted hours with Joel Osteen would be an amazing experience. He’s so filled with the calm presence of God! I like the way he thinks…and lives his life. I admire the way he turns what could be lofty ideals into language anyone can understand and identify with. And I respect that he speaks of hope and faith and trust in the Lord in ways that inspire, invigorate and encourage. I’d expect that, at the end of a meeting with this fella, I’d be fired-up in brand new ways, too. (And as I’d make my exit, I’d ask “So, Joel…why do you BLINK so much!” )

My husband really likes to listen to Joel. I'm sure he'd love to spend time with him, too. What are your hobbies, besides reading and writing?

I love working in my gardens. I have dozens, all around my yard. I enjoy dabbling in art, too, and have created some fair-to-middlin’ sketches, woodburnings, and paintings and the like that my poor friends and relatives have to display when I visit. I’m big-time into rearranging the furniture, because I enjoy the way a new room lay-out gives the house a fresh look…for free! Cooking and baking is a lot of fun, too…and because I like eating as much as making things…I enjoy my weekly Weight Watchers meetings, too!

By the way, Loree, I love the cover of this new book. What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?

The inability to say NO with conviction is by far my biggest hurdle in my writing world. Not being able to speak this tiny, one-syllable word gives birth to distraction…something I share this with anyone who works from home. Whether we’re assembling widgets, stitching quilts, making flower arrangements, or writing stories, we are all expected to accomplish a certain amount of work every day…despite being taunted by the ‘fridge, the pantry, the telephone, and the TV. Friends and relatives seem convinced that, because we don’t drive to an office or punch a time clock, we have unlimited hours to run errands, bake cupcakes, pick up dry cleaning, and edit or critique other’s manuscripts.

In most cases, I’m more than happy to say ‘yes’ to others’ requests. But sometimes? Sigh. Sometimes I wish they had the capacity to see how difficult it is for me to say anything BUT! I love making people happy. Love making them smile. Love helping out when and where I can, in any way I can. And I hate disappointing anyone…especially those I love!

I guess the answer to Part Two of this question is…when I figure out HOW to overcome it, I’ll let you know. In the meantime, pray for me!

What advice would you give a beginning author?

I’m sure they’ve all heard the tried and true: Read, study, write…then read, study, and write some more!

I’ll take that a step further, and suggest a break from writing every hour or two. Step away from the computer. Stretch. Work the kinks from your hands and neck. Drink a tall glass of cool water. Then pray. Ask the Lord if what you’ve written is what He hoped you’d write. If so, praise him! If not, ask Him to show you how those words can be improved. Ask for His guidance as you move from ‘that’ scene to the next. Because when all’s said and done, if you haven’t glorified Him, your words won’t echo in the hearts of your readers. And that’s the sensation that brings them back to your stories, again and again!

Now, tell us about the featured book.

Love Finds You in North Pole, Alaska, is a fun story that takes readers to a city they’ll likely not visit in their lifetime! Situated outside Fairbanks, it’s a place where you can celebrate Christmas year-round.

The hero, a returning war veteran, isn’t happy with the way his fellow citizens have commercialized the holy day. And to add to his frustration, the sluggish real estate market means he can’t sell the shop willed to him by his deceased parents. So much for his dream of opening a carpentry shop, where he can create one-of-a-kind furniture pieces. The heroine is a fun-loving, klutzy gal who comes to North Pole to prove to her seven rowdy brothers that she CAN make a go of it in the frozen north! He hires her to run the shop…until a suitable buyer comes along. To his surprise, he discovers she can turn a profit, and have time to spare.

She’s determined to prove there are Santa-like qualities in this Grinch-like handsome man before he decides to leave North Pole for a place where warmth isn’t in such short supply!

TRIAL BY FIRE - Cara Putman - Free Book

I'm really happy to welcome Cara back to my blog. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?

Now that I’ve written eight novels, I guess the theme would be that God sees us and cares about our day to day lives. In Sandhill Dreams that took the shape of the heroine coming to accept that God would never leave her or forsake her no matter what her circumstances. In Canteen Dreams, the theme centered around the idea of laying down our lives for others and sometimes that doesn’t mean being willing to actually die but serve in the way placed in front of us. In Trial by Fire, it involved the idea of seeking justice and mercy as God commands, when our human instinct is to want revenge.

What other books of yours are coming out soon?

In addition to Trial by Fire, which releases this week, A Promise Born is going on wide release later this fall and Cornhusker Dreams releases in November. A Promise Born is the first book in my Ohio World War Two series for Heartsong Presents. And Cornhusker Dreams is the repackaging of my three Nebraska World War Two novels: Canteen Dreams, Sandhill Dreams, and Captive Dreams. You can learn more about all of my books at www.caraputman.com .

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?

Wow! That’s a great question, Lena. I think I would choose Margaret Thatcher. I have admired her for a long time. A woman who broke stereotypes, but did it with grace. And a woman who changed the dynamics of the world in a positive way. I know there is much I could learn from a woman like her.

How long have you known that you wanted to be novelist?

I started writing in third grade – still have that journal. But I don’t think I knew I wanted to write books until I was about 14. I started writing novelists then asking them what it took to write books. I have letters that my mom collected into a scrapbook for me from authors like Janette Oke, Sandy Dengler, Michael Phillips, Frank Peretti and more. It was so fun to look through those letters a couple Christmases ago when my mother gave me the scrapbook. To see the eagerness to learn from the writers that I respected – and their willingness to correspond with me! The thrill came when my sister tracked down Sandy Dengler and connected us again after all these years. I was horrified to realize that Sandy had actually read some of my teenage writings, but so thrilled to be able to send her a copy of my first book and let her know how her kindness to me back then encouraged me to keep the dream. Wow, sorry for that long answer. It just makes me realize how God has blessed me with mentors from the inception of this dream.

What can you tell authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?

Hand your dream to God and ask Him what He wants you to do. I have been blessed to receive many acceptance letters from houses, but they have been mixed with “this isn’t quite right for us at this time” letters, too. Ask God whether to continue to pursue the dream. If He says yes, then get back in that chair and write. Many of the published authors are the ones who persevere and work for years. So find another craft book, hunt through the rejection for any hints on what to work on, and keep writing.

Tell us about the featured book?

Trial by Fire is my next book for Love Inspired Suspense. It is a loose sequel to Deadly Exposure, but you don’t need to have read the first to enjoy the second.

Here’s the blurb: Her mother's house was first. Then her brother's. County prosecutor Tricia Jamison is sure she's next on the arsonist's list. But who is after her family? And why does every fire throw her in Noah Brust's path?

Noah can't forgive Tricia. Her failure to protect him on the stand the previous year meant his father's reputation was ruined. Yet every time the firefighter is near her, he's drawn to her again. The vulnerability she hides under her confident veneer surprises and moves him. Torn between Tricia's safety and his own bitterness, Noah belatedly remembers the first rule of firefighting: don't get burned.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Another broken fairy tale sat on her desk.

The phone ringing on her desk pulled deputy county attorney Tricia Jamison from her work. She glanced at her watch. The afternoon had evaporated while she flipped through new case files and absorbed the dashed hopes each one represented. She’d taken the job as deputy county attorney because she’d wanted to help people. But each time another domestic violence case crossed her desk it was hard not to grow discouraged. Too many times the hope of fairy tales and happily-ever-afters had gone horribly wrong. She shook her head and grabbed the phone.

“Tricia Jamison, deputy prosecutor.”

“Trish, this is Caleb. There’s a fire at Mom’s.” Her brother’s voice had an edge of tension she hadn’t heard in awhile. As a police investigator, he usually kept his emotions tightly controlled. He hadn’t sounded so rattled since last year when a stalker set his sights on Caleb’s girlfriend Dani Richards.

Her breath caught in her chest as she shut the file on her desk. “How bad?”

“Don’t know. I heard it on my scanner before Mom called.”

“I’ll leave now.” Her jaw clenched. Images of flames lapping at her mother’s home raced through her mind. The home encapsulated so many memories, both good and bad.

SOLDIER DADDY - Cheryl Wyatt - Free book

Welcome, back, Cheryl. Tell us about your salvation experience.

I came into an authentic relationship with God in my mid-twenties thanks to His people reaching out to me. While I wasn't raised in church, my parents did raise me to know there was a God and that He was both a force to be reckoned with as well as caring enough to hold us in His hand and care for us. I remember my mom used to sing an old song and the words went something like, "He's got the whole world in His hands." Dad would often remind us that, he may not be watching, but Someone bigger always was. That sorta put the fear of God in me. LOL! I mean as far as having a healthy respect for God.

But I didn't really understand God's desire to have a close, personal minute-by-minute relationship with us until I was in my late teens, early twenties. I went to a few Bible studies in High School, but I was going for the wrong reasons (Read: Cute guys led the Bible study! LOL) so it didn't really stick. But in my twenties, I had a profound experience with God that changed my life and I have never looked back.

In those moments where God met me and I had a tangible sense of His love, acceptance and His presence of mercy, I could not begin to even put that feeling in words other than to say it beyond overwhelmed me. From that point on, I have looked Heavenward.

I said to God in that moment, "I don't know You at all, but, if this is You...I want to!"

And He has never ceased to be faithful. I live for the day I will get to see the one face to face who so loved me unconditionally. I pray each person reading this has that kind of life-changing encounter with the living God. I'm so glad He left his spirit here with us to wrap around us like a warm blanket, literally, The Comforter. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say that I had faithful people who stormed Heaven on my behalf and through prayer, God met me in a place of brokenness and literally rescued me. I think that's why I write rescuers because I have a strong sense of being rescued by God.

How did you and your husband meet?

He he. I met him at a Coffee House in Illinois. He didn't notice me at first because he was tweaking knobs on a sound board. He's an audio guy for many Christian and other bands and I loved music and concerts. So I saw him often at the same venues I'd volunteer at. Then one day one of my girlfriends said he'd been asking about me. I didn't think he'd noticed me. By that time I was sorta dating someone else but we broke up and I was brokenhearted. So my husband befriended me/pursued me for the next two years. He had great character as a Christian and he's an absolute riot as far as being funny and witty. He's the kind of person who brings everyone up around him and his humor is so contageous. Didn't take me long to fall. :-) We've been married for almost 12 years .

I love being around your husband, too. You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?

Just four? Ack. I positively CANNOT choose just four. So how about 10?
--Camy Tang because she's an excellent brainstormer and knows strong story structure plus I love to hear her laugh more than almost anything. And she's one of my best buds.
--Danica Favorite McDonald because she is so uplifting as a friend and honest in her critiques. And she's one of my best buds.
--Cynthia Hawkins because she's such an encourager and I don't get to spend nearly as much time with her as I'd like to. And she's one of my best buds.
--Robin Miller because she offers brutal honesty, free of charge. LOLOL! She comes up with great plot twists and she's one of my best buds.
--Margaret Daley because she has a strong handle on writing romances and she is a mentor to me as well as a friend.
--Pammer because I miss her.
--Tosca Lee because I admire her and her writing so much and am convinced she is a modern day CS Lewis. She is the coolest, prettiest potato peeler on the planet and I'm thankful for the friendship God is building between us.
--Cynthia Ruchti because she is so very inspiring and would be a blast to brainstorm with.
--Karen Ball because she is an absolute riot and her mind is as twisted as mine and I don't meet many people that way. Plus I love her stories.
--Lena for being so gracious and letting me bring all these people to the brainstorming retreat. LOLOL!

Okay I said 10 but if I could bring more, I'd invite my friend Marcie Scheumaker who writes non-fiction and I'd invite my Seeker sisters http://www.seekerville.blogspot.com/

Sounds like a group I'd love to be a part of. Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.

Not a significant one at the present. I will wait until my little ones get older. I have spoken at events and get asked to, but I have many prior obligations since my husband and I are involved in audio/music and NASCAR ministry together. Once my children are older, I will pursue the speaking more because I love to encourage people to follow their God-given dreams/destinies. That seems to be the common theme that comes out whenever I speak. Living up to their full potential in God and how/what God can do with one surrendered life can change the course of history. So I usually speak about great but obscure women of faith that most people may not have heard of, such as Jackie Pullinger To and other missionaries and trailblazers. As a bumper sticker I saw once said, "Most well-behaved women never make history." LOL.

Love the bumper sticker. Want one for my car. What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?

Oh my goodness. This is hard because I literally do something every other day that embarrasses me. I learned to laugh at myself a long time ago thankfully, otherwise I'd be in a world of hurt in the self-esteem department. LOL! A recent thing I did was to send a message to one of my editors via my BlackBerry which had the auto-correct function on. I didn't know how to disable it and to my mortification, it changed the word "Assistant" to "Assassin" and sent before I could stop it. So the header to the e-mail page said the name of one of my editors, then comma, then, "Editorial Assassin." Thankfully she has a great sense of humor, though I felt like a dweeb. It became quite funny. Sure, she's a spiffy editor with a great eye for detail, but I wouldn't go as far as calling her an assassin. Unless of course she's hacking up/killing off my extraneous/superfluous words. LOL.

People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?

I would tell them to join http://www.acfw.com/ and dig in learning craft. I would tell them to write, write, write and to read, read, read. To always write as worship and to be willing, even then, to hear hard things about their writing in order to improve and to strive for excellence in craft. And once they do sell, to seek to make God famous and not themselves.

Tell us about the featured book?

Soldier Daddy was an unexpected treat. I had just had a car accident and was literally heading into my first of several surgeries for repair of fractures associated with the car wreck. I had turned in one book in a proposal and Melissa, my editor, phoned to offer not one but TWO contracts! She wanted Petrowski's story. Aaron Petrowski has been in the previous Wings of Refuge books, but never really onstage. He was sort of like "Charlie" from "Charlie's Angels." You never really see him, but you hear him and he's this force in control, this entity who gives orders and guidance to the pararescuers. You knew from previous books that he suffered the loss of his wife and left pararescue for a little while to raise his infant twins. But in this book, he's back and I won't tell you who the heroine is...but she brightens all their lives. This story was so fun to write because it has two toddler boys. This book was an unexpected blessing to me during a difficult time and I hope and pray that it brings the same kind of joy to readers as it did to me, the privilege of getting to write Aaron's story.

Please give us the first page of the book.

"Ooh, Aaron, she's so young! And pretty!" Mina Garcia, housekeeper and longtime family friend of U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Aaron Petrowski, clapped her dark hands together. She peeked out the Petrowski home window as the nanny applicant exited her car. The very young and vivacious applicant, very unlike the empty-nested grandmotherly types who'd interviewed so far.

Mina clutched Aaron's sleeve and continued to emit strange little squeaks as the trim-but-not-too-thin blonde crunched across a calico pattern of fallen leaves carpeting the yard he really should have raked. "Aaron Michael! Shame on you for not telling me how glaringly gorgeous she is!"

Glaringly gorgeous? That hadn't even entered his mind yesterday at the agency. What had attracted him were Sarah's on-paper credentials and her enthusiasm and gratitude over being chosen as a candidate for the job.

Trek paused, Sarah bent to pull a punctured leaf from her conservative but classy spiked heel. When she stood and eyed the house, catching a glimpse of them watching from the window, her excited wave and ready smile rivaled September's sun. Glaringly gorgeous?

Yeah, now that Mina mentioned it…

LOVE AT FIRST FLIGHT - Beth Shriver - Free Book

Welcome, Beth. Why do you write the kind of books you do?

Looking back on those days of first loves and the possibilities that the attraction promises is the reason I write YA. And this story stirs up all those feelings in just the right way. I loved capturing Neely's youth--that age where she's just about to step into adulthood. She's a great character--and Angelo is scrumptious too!

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?

I read the obituaries. And for awhile I made it a daily habit which eventually led to a story I’ve been working on titled, The Funeral Hopper. It’s a fun read with very unique characters. You never know where your quirks may take you.

When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer?

What other books have you written, whether published or not?

I have a romantic suspense, A Case of the Heart, coming out in June. I’ve also written a historical, Remnant of the Fall, that will be out this summer and a women’s fiction, Reclaiming Tess, will released at the end of the year. My last book, Fear of Falling, will come out in 2010. Presently I’m writing another YA.

What is the range of books you like to read?

I don’t have any particular genre that I like, maybe historical if I had to choose, but I like to read all types of books and see everything that’s out there. I’ve been surprised at some of the books I’ve really enjoyed that I never thought I’d like. When you see all the different genres I write in you’ll understand my tendency to jump around a lot. It’s all about the story not the category for me.

I loved watching the otters in Carmel, too. What is your favorite food?

Sushi. Goes with the otter thingJ

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?

It’s hard to break into any market. It’s all about timing, finding an editor who likes your writing, and perseverance.

What advice would you give to a beginning author who want to write the kind of books you do?

Read YAs, know teens and how they think, talk, what they would do in situations different than adults. And although each individual has preferences, teens tend to go with the trend even more than adults, so watch for the big hits and find out from teens what they liked about those books. And don’t give up. The writing industry is TOUGH!

Tell us about the featured book?

Love at First Flight is like a perfect summer vacation, full of sun, surf, and a sweet romance. Who doesn’t dream of going on a trip to an exotic location and finding love? Neely is a likable and engaging narrator, and girls will enjoy tagging along in her suitcase for this fantasy trip to Mexico, which is touched with just enough realism to make the happy ending quite satisfying.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Page One

I braced myself for the landing. I’d gotten through takeoff, but landings were worse. I didn’t have a fear of flying. It’s more a fear of puking.

The plane lost altitude. Every downward movement made my stomach lurch. My clammy hands stuck to the armrests, and my forehead perspired. Why did it take so long to land? It seemed like an endless process to drop a few hundred feet. Meanwhile, I was being tortured.

Don’t throw up! Don’t throw up! I kept this mantra until the tires hit the runway, then I took a deep breath. Yes! I’d made it without puking!

I had been so excited about going to Mexico. The picture on the brochure of a lady in a bikini, lying in a hammock between two palm trees, made it look like a tropical paradise. But whenever I get on a plane I wonder if it’s worth it. But this was my last big hurrah before leaving for college, so I planned to make the most of it.

I exhaled and looked at my sister beside me.

“I had this ready for you, Neely.” Meredith held out a puke bag.

Meredith is two years older than me and in her second year of college. We had our share of brawls growing up, but now that she’s gone most of the time, I’d hoped we might get along better.

“Very funny. Let me look out the window. Can you see anything?” I moved my head around, trying to look out.

She moved her head with mine, blocking my view. I slapped her on the knee. She yelped, and reached out to grab me.

Dad’s hand shot between us, catching her hand. “You two never change.” He shook his head.

Outside the window, palm trees blew in the wind. The Cancun airport was surrounded by a jungle.

SUNFLOWER SERENADE - Tricia Goyer - Free Book

Welcome back, Tricia. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.

I think there’s a piece of me in most of my point-of-view characters. To truly consider my characters’ fears I think of my own. Also, many of the same issues that these characters deal with are things I’ve walked through, such as a desire to find true love, questions about parenting, a desire to do something greater with my life, etc. The characters can be men, women, (even children), but to some extend their internal stuff is mine.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?

Recently I was at an English camp and I had WAY too much fun with our nightly “Dance Club.” I perform a mean Chicken Dance and Hokey-Pokey!

We were just at a wedding, and my granddaughters did Chicken Dance and the Macarena. When did you first discover that you were a writer?

In 1994 when I was pregnant with my 3rd child I attended my first writer’s conference. I was hooked. I *loved* the idea of writing. I wanted to spend all my spare moments at the keyboard. The more I learned, the more I wanted to write. It was at my second conference, perhaps, that I called myself a “writer.” I’m thankful that God led me to this place where I can do what I love.

Yes, it's really fun to do what He created us to do. Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
Oh, I love many different types. History, classic devotionals, non-fiction, novels. I’m currently reading a novel The Help, a biography of a tank driver in World War II, and a book on evangelism … quite a mix!

What other books have you written, whether published or not?

I have a few children’s books that are written but not published yet. Other than that I’ve sold all the novels and non-fiction books that I’ve written. Maybe because I don’t start writing them until I have a publishing contract. :-)

I know what you're talking about. How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?

By centering in Christ. My #1 priority of the day is to get away with my Bible and journal for at least 30 minutes. I need God to give me peace. During this time I ask God to help me figure out my priorities. I praise Him for who He is. I read my Bible and write down Scriptures that stand out to me. His Word feeds my soul. Of course, I don’t need quiet to call on God. I often say quick prayers throughout the day. “God, help!”

How do you choose your characters’ names?

I have favorite names and I find myself turning to those first. If I had more girls I would have used some of the names I’ve used for my characters: Michaela, Libby, Julia, Evie, Sophie. The novel I’m writing now has a character named Ava. I like them. Sometimes … I think of a name that was common during the time in history of when I’m writing. Mary and Bette are examples of this. Last names are harder. Sometimes I just scan my bookshelf (or even my mail) to see what name pops out to me.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?

My family. I love them and our home. I love our joy, our laughter, our joined love of God. I’m so proud of my husband and my kids. They bring the most smiles.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?

A cat. Give me a warm place to nap and I’m happy. Purrrr …

What is your favorite food?

My grandma’s homemade enchiladas. Yum! She made them for me just a few nights ago.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?

My greatest road block was that I was more eager to be published than to learn the craft. Once I spent time learning about good writing my work improved … and the publishing contracts came in their proper time.

What advice would you give to an author just starting out?

Join an on-line writing group for accountability. Check out as many writing books as you can find and read them. Write, write, write. Make the time.

Tell us about the featured book?

Sunflower Serenade was a novel that my kids helped me to plot. It is my third book in the Home to Heather Creek series. One day I was writing in the car when I asked my kids. What would be interesting … if you lived on a farm what would you want to happen? They love country music so a visit from a country singer would be the best. The story grew from there!

Here is what it’s about:

A small-town summer …

The days are long and lazy, the corn is high, the sunflowers are in bloom, and everyone in Bedford is gearing up for the biggest event of the summer: the annual county fair. But when a Nashville music producer approaches Bob about using Heather Creek Farm to film a country star's new music video, he and Charlotte are faced with a dilemma. Will they allow the glamour and enticements of big-city life to encroach upon their peaceful home? Will the excitement of celebrity drown out the simple joys of summer?

Thank you, Tricia, for spending this time with us.

GUARDED SECRETS - Leann Harris - Free Book

Why do you write the kind of books you do?

I write romantic suspense. I love reading mystery, so I write that. I am also branching out into cozies (soft mysteries in told in the first person) and traditional romance.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?

Aside from the day I got married and birth of my children, the best day I had was spending the day in Jackson Hole with a friend. We had a wonderful breakfast at this quaint restaurant, and I had the best coffee cake I’ve ever tasted. I’d be willing to drive to Wyoming again just to eat at that restaurant. Then we spent the day driving around the area, enjoying the Fall color and the wonderful coolness of the air. And for those of us from Texas, that temperature is heaven.

How has being published changed your life?

I’ve been published 16 years, but only recently in Christian market. But, I’ve recently quit my day job. Staying at home is a wonderful thing. I can write and my schedule is mine own. When you teach school, your time is not your own. It is a joy to get up and eat breakfast and drink my tea leisurely.

What are you reading right now?

I’m reading a new author, Liz Johnson. Her book, The Kidnapping of Kenzie Thorn, is her first book. It is always a joy to read a new author.

What is your current work in progress?

I am working on a cozy. My heroine is a livestock photographer and all sorts of shenanigans happen at the livestock show where she’s taking pictures--a murder, a stolen pig, and a good looking sheriff. And of course, the sheriff is the hero.

What would be your dream vacation?

Spending a week in the mountains of Colorado. I’d love to get a cabin in the mountains and just enjoy the coolness of the morning and smell the wonderful smells of the changing seasons. I also want to see the glorious color.

How do you choose your settings for each book?

I’m comfortable with setting in the south and west. I’ve also put books in Scotland, England, and France. I spent a couple of weeks in England and Scotland just to have the experience of being there.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?

Rick Warren. I’d love to talk to him about his world vision. He also puts his faith into action. He is a man who has face opposition and still remained faithful.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?

I garden and I use it a therapy. When I get stuck on a story, I go out and dig in my garden. It inspires me.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?

While I was teaching, time was the biggest obstacle. After I finished a day of teaching, I'd come home, eat, watch a little TV, then between 9-10 every night I'd write. Most of the time I didn’t feel like writing, but it’s a matter of discipline. You ignore your feelings and sit down and write. Some people might wonder how could I write without inspiration? I had it when the book was born. It’s the daily work that demands discipline. Once I sit down to write the words come and all sorts of wonderful things happen.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?

You have to write. It has to be a priority. Whatever works with your schedule, you need to write weekly. Establish a goal—the number of pages you will produce each week. When I’m actively writing a book I have daily goals, usually 7 or 8 pages. Other people try for ‘x’ number of pages per week or a chapter a day. It doesn’t matter. You have to write.

Guarded Secrets is a story about a man whose life was destroyed and how God reached down and turned his mourning into dancing. The heroine, Lilly Burkstrom is also a wounded soul. Her ex-husband is murdered and she knows his death isn’t an accident. The killer is soon after her, and Jon, the police detective assigned to the case, has to protect her.

The door stood ajar, and panic raced through her veins. She’d locked her ex-husband’s apartment door after retrieving his clothes for the funeral.

“Mom, did you forget to lock the door? You know Daddy always made me-” Tears clogged Penny’s throat.

Lilly Burkstrom pulled her daughter into her arms.

“I don’t understand, Mom,” Penny sobbed into her mother’s waist. “Why did Daddy have to die?”

It was a question Lilly asked herself. Peter had been murdered in a convenience store robbery gone bad.

It didn’t make much sense to her, a twenty-nine-year-old woman, so how could she expect her eight-year-old daughter to understand it?

“I don’t know, sweetie. I know you miss him. I do, too.”

Penny hugged her with a desperate intensity. “You won’t leave me, will you?” She looked up, her huge brown eyes glistening with tears.

Lilly’s heart broke. She wiped the wetness from her daughter’s cheeks. “No I won’t.” Although she and Peter had been divorced almost since Penny’s birth, they had come to terms with their failed marriage and had become friends. Peter’s recent salvation had changed all their lives. “I can take you home and do this by myself.”

Penny wiped away her tears and stepped back. “I want to help.”

Lilly pushed the door all the way open and peered inside. The condition of the apartment shocked her.

Penny gasped. “Mom, what happened?”

Lilly’s gazed swept the living room, dining room, and kitchen. It looked as if a tornado had ripped through the place, throwing things everywhere. Chairs and end tables had been tossed on their sides. The sofa had been turned over, and the cushions ripped and thrown around the room. The kitchen cabinets stood open; boxes of cereal and spaghetti spilled out from the shelves. Broken dishes and glasses littered the countertops and floor.

“I don’t know." Three days ago, when she’d been inside this apartment to get one of Peter’s suits for the funeral, everything was fine.

“I wonder if Dad’s bedroom is this way.” Penny started down the short hall.

A loud noise came from the bedroom.

Penny froze. When she turned her head, her frightened gaze met Lilly’s.

Lilly motioned for her daughter to come toward her. Penny turned and ran to her mother. Lilly rushed them out of the apartment and down the stairs. They retreated to Lilly’s car and Lilly whipped out her cell phone.

“Nine-one-one. What is your emergency?”

“I need to report a burglary.”

LOVE FINDS YOU IN BETHLEHEM, NEW HAMPSHIRE - Lauralee Bliss - Free Book

I know many of you are collecting all the Love Finds You books, so here's another one to add to your collection.

Welcome, Lauralee. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?

Each book is different in regards to a theme. I like to write an entertaining book that ministers to the heart. In each of my books I write a spiritual lesson that Christian readers can take away – from forgiveness, to being a servant, to finding hope and purpose in time of greatest need.

What other books of yours are coming out soon?

I have a three book contemporary romance series set in the beautiful state of Utah coming in 2010 by Heartsong Presents, Barbour Publishing. The first book, “Love’s Winding Path” is based on the biblical story of the Prodigal Son.

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?

I would like to spend time with Sarah Palin. What an incredible Christian woman who is living in an incredible state and with her own fascinating journey as a wife, mother, grandmother, and political figure. I believe she is a true inspiration to all women seeking to embrace the call on their lives to go greater with God. I hope she writes a book!

Funny you should say that. Her memoir is releasing in November. How long have you known that you wanted to be novelist?

Since I was fourteen when I wrote creative pieces for my English teachers. They were supportive of my early endeavors, and I owe a lot to them for putting me on the path I’m walking today.

What can you tell authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?

Rejection is a tough but a necessary road in the journey of a writer's life. I mean, we can’t have everything accepted. But when it seems like nothing is happening and the doors are closing everywhere, that's when faith must take over. You need to give your writing and its results to God and allow Him to open the doors when the timing is right. And one never knows when that will be. It is our job to make the most of the talent He has given us. One waters, another plants, but it is God that causes the growth.

Love Finds You in Bethlehem, New Hampshire, is what one reader calls - a "twist" on the mail order bride story, sort of like the mail order bride meets up with My Fair Lady. In it there’s an uneducated and penniless orphan whose well meaning friend answers an ad for a bride, and the unsuspecting suitor who has no idea what to make of the woman who arrives at the train station. Even if he feels he cannot marry her, he will provide for her. But both are in for a surprise and a change of heart and attitude - thus leading to the idea of the first Bethlehem - that the most precious gifts don’t always come as they're expected.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Chapter One

“I don’t know if I can make it!” cried a young voice.

The paintbrush shook in his hand, creating a zigzag of azure across the canvas. Tom Haskins tried to set the brush on the easel but it fell, coloring the blades of grass a murky blue. Nearby, a young couple stumbled out of the woods. The man supported a finely dressed lady who limped along, wincing in pain.

“What happened?” Tom called, hurrying to assist them.

“It was silly of me,” the young woman moaned. “You know the many rocks here. I was looking at a flower and didn’t see where I was going. I tripped.”

“My wife hurt her ankle,” the man continued. “I don’t think it’s broken. It’s all right, my love,” he now said to her in a soothing voice. “We’ll take you right away to the doctor and have it examined. I’m sure in a day or two you’ll be fine.”

“Oh, I hope so. I’d hate to ruin our holiday over such a foolish thing as this. You deserve it after all the hard work you put into the company.”

“Never fear, my dear. My carriage is there,” he said to Tom, pointing to the coach Tom had seen when he arrived to this fine wooded setting, not far from the town of Bethlehem.

What an interesting start for the story. I want to turn the page. How can readers find you on the Internet?
