SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL - K Dawn Byrd - One Free Ebook

Tell us about your salvation experience.
I came to know the Lord in Bible school when I was in elementary school. I don't remember what date, which is unfortunate. I'd gone with a neighbor.

You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?
This is going to sound strange coming from a CBA author. Harlan Coben, Lisa Jackson, Lisa Gardner because they all write great suspense. My third choice isn't strange at all because she's a CBA author. Pepper Basham because she's so sweet and knows exactly what to say when I need it.

Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.
Me, speak? Are you kidding? I'd pass away in a dead faint.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?
I was at a writing conference (not ACFW) and bit into a huge olive and gave the girl sitting next to me a bath. Good thing, we'd been hanging out for a few days and I felt like I knew her.

People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
I tell them to study and learn as much as they can about the craft before starting.

Tell us about the featured book.
Here's the blurb from my publisher:
Lauren Milton has always followed the rules, but when she meets Antony Marcos, she discovers just how much fun it is to do her own thing. When Antony, the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks, professes his love for her, her life is complete. He's her soul mate, but when she finds that he's harboring secrets, can she forgive him?

Antony is terrified that his secrets will destroy their relationship when Lauren finds out the truth. Does he tell the truth and face losing her or continue his activities, possibly placing her in danger? Can they make things work even though her family and friends are against him?

Lauren has PTSD from the car accident that killed her boyfriend and her mother. Can she face her greatest fears while risking everything for the guy she loves? Can they overcome the obstacles facing them to find their happily ever after?

Please give us the first page of the book.
The taste of fear hung thick in the air, sickening me. I swallowed hard, attempting to ease the dryness in my throat. Three guys were following me, and they looked nowhere near model citizens.

I stumbled and righted myself, stealing a quick glance over my shoulder. They were gaining ground. Adrenaline fired my blood as I pushed myself to move faster
.
The deathly quiet on campus was unnerving, no student chatter, not the faintest rustle of a breeze. Class had begun, and the sidewalks were deserted. Why had I signed up for a night class?
I contemplated dodging into a thick grove of trees to my right, but if I couldn't outrun them, they'd be free to do whatever they wanted to me in the secluded grove that was too sheltered for anyone to hear my screams. Dusk was quickly approaching and a light rain began to fall, sparkling the sidewalk. The scent of damp earth rose up to meet me, taunting me that it would be glad to provide an early grave.

My heart slammed into my ribs as I wiped sweaty palms down the side of my jeans, moving as fast as I could with a heavy backpack strapped to my back. Glancing over my shoulder, I caught a glimpse of the one who appeared to be their leader. He had me in his sights, a determined look on his hardened face. I wrestled with the backpack, attempting to free myself. Let them have my laptop, my jewelry, and everything else. Just give me my freedom.

"Hey, sweet thing!" one yelled, his voice raspy.

Weak in the knees, I continued forward, hoping he'd think I hadn't heard him. I couldn't slow down to rid myself of the backpack, and it was impossible to dump while moving. It was too heavy. A shuffling noise behind me told me they were closing in.

A rough squeeze on my shoulder and a jerk backward turned me to face the head honcho. "What do you want?" I whispered, my breath freezing in my lungs.

His lips curled and his eyes narrowed to slits. "You should have listened when I told you to stop."

"I-I'm late for class." I glanced around, hoping to spot someone. Anyone.

The heat from the concrete mixed with the newly fallen rain floated upward, fogging the air and stealing what little breath I had left. Panic surged through me, and I silently cursed myself for leaving my pepper spray in the car.

A calculated grin tugged at his wide mouth. He took his time sizing me up much like a cat toying with a mouse. Snapping his fingers as if remembering something important, he said, "I've seen you around. You drive the red Beamer. The ragtop." He rubbed his chin.

Ice water flowed through my veins. He knew what I drove. Did he know where I lived?
"What's your old man do for a living anyway?"

My mind played a scene-by-scene footage of him stuffing a gag in my mouth, throwing me into the trunk of his car, and hauling me to a warehouse on the outskirts of our small Southwest Virginia town. I faced them head-on. I wouldn't tell them that my father, Quentin Milton, was the new district attorney. That knowledge was a hold-me-for-ransom death wish.

Keep them talking, Lauren. Someone has to show up eventually.
I stared him down as he grasped my chin, his hands rough and calloused and his grip strong. His hair was greasy, and he reeked of garlic and cheap cologne. My stomach tumbled, and I held my breath. Nothing he could do to me would hurt me worse that what I'd suffered the last two years.

Nothing.

PARRISH THE THOUGHT - Catherine Leggitt - One Free Book

Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
The Christine Sterling Mystery series—PAYNE & MISERY, THE DUNN DEAL, and PARRISH THE THOUGHT—is a cozy mystery trilogy written over about ten years of my life. At the beginning, I needed a diversion from the insanity of my raging hormonal dysfunction during menopause. Then, I had no idea God planned the writing to be used in any way other than getting me through my days and nights, so I wrote about things that were happening or what I was thinking about.

I packed the first book, PAYNE & MISERY, with every injustice, oversight, or neglect I ever suffered or imagined to suffer. I produced quite an odious tome of complaint. I exposed much more about our relationship and about myself than I ever intended the public to know. Of course, the book had to be rewritten ten times before it became publishable and much of the whining had to be excised. But when people point out similarities between the main characters (Jesse and Christine Sterling) and my husband Bob and me, I merely smile and nod.

In my next book, DYING TO BE NOTICED, I created a whole new set of characters just to prove I can.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
I never broke into the neighbors’ house like Christine did. Through Christine I’ve done really nutty things. But my husband would probably say the quirkiest thing about me concerns my fascination with subways. When I visit a big city with a subway, I am compelled to explore it. So I’ve managed to get lost in London, Boston, Chicago, and New York.

Once in London, on the way to the theatre, a man approached my daughter and me as we exited the subway. He politely inquired whether we were ladies of the evening. In Boston, Bob and I went a stop too far on our way to Cambridge and ended up practically running at dusk through a rather questionable neighborhood.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
I never dared refer to myself as a writer until quite recently, but I have always loved to write. I love words. When I was thirteen, I fell in love with a boy at church. He had the most amazing thick reddish-blond hair and he smelled good. We seldom spoke, but I pined fervently, mostly from afar, replaying his few words to me over and over in my mind and endlessly fingering the few cards and notes he sent.

One day he called to say his parents didn’t want us to sit together at church any more since we were too young to be getting so serious. I was crushed and closeted myself in my bedroom to write our tragic love story. After shedding many tears and writing four dramatic chapters, my mother coaxed me out of my room for food. I kept the start of that novel, certain that one day I would complete it. During high school, I would always begin writing term papers the day they were assigned, a practice I kept secret after once being called weird.

Later, I wrote a few children’s stories for my girls and for my grandchildren. To this day, I keep files with ideas for stories. But I really began to write in earnest about twelve years ago when menopause hit. Today, I call myself a writer.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
In my home are many shelves full of books. Most are fiction, but occasionally something like Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott comes to my attention. Mysteries are my favorite diversion in the reading world. Special authors include Marcia Muller, Elizabeth George, Tony Hillerman, Sue Grafton, Sibella Giorella, Charles Martin, and Nancy Rue. I have been known to read truly good books a second time. I also sometimes listen to books on tape after I have read a particularly wonderful book. I did this recently after reading Kate Morton’s The House at Riverton.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
My best hope to stay grounded is Bible Study Fellowship. I have attended one group or another of this international Bible study for over twenty-five years. The format includes daily homework, discussion groups, a lecture, and notes to read. I need this kind of discipline to keep me in God’s Word on a regular basis. I didn’t begin to grow up until I started to study the Bible. When I get crazy or allow the stresses of life to overwhelm me, it’s always because I have gone too long without prayer and Bible study.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
I keep a cache of names filed in my head in case I ever need one for a character. For example, Lila Kliner (in PAYNE & MISERY) was a little girl I played with when I visited my aunt in Oregon each summer of my childhood. Russell Silverthorne (also a character in PAYNE & MISERY) was a distinguished man I met at church. Baxter Dunn (THE DUNN DEAL) was a dishonored sheriff I read about in the newspapers who happens to have a great name for a character.

I also use names of family members from time to time. Once, a friend of my daughter asked me to name a character after her. That’s how a nurse named Brenda Gonzales became part of DYING TO BE NOTICED. My goal is to make the sound or connotation of the name fit the characteristics of the person being named. I often check the national census website looking for popular names during the period my character would have been born.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Raising two incredible human beings—my daughters. They are both very intelligent and highly educated, one with a PhD in microbiology and one an excellent nurse. But better than that, they are compassionate, kind, gentle, loving people, good citizens who make a difference in the world.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
A border collie. High energy level, zest for life, fierce loyalty, cuddly, loves people, needs to work and enjoys work, lifelong love of learning.
What is your favorite food?
I am a foodie. How can I name my favorite? Best I can say is Mexican food always wakes up my taste buds. You can never go wrong with shrimp. Anything with chocolate is high on my list, but pie is my favorite dessert.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
I have never been able to conduct an interview that gets me a job, which doesn’t mean I haven’t gotten jobs, just never once because of a stellar interview. So when it comes to selling a book, forget it. I just don’t sell myself well. I even freeze up when sending out queries. Consequently, at present I still do not have an agent. Even after offering manuscripts to maybe a dozen in person and having four books published, I haven’t even found an agent willing to actually look at my work.

For this reason, I am extraordinarily grateful to my publisher, Rochelle Carter of Ellechor Publishing, for looking past my fumbling, rambling interview to see the book I had produced. It was just a matter of not giving up, of continuing to press myself into situations and conversations where my work might be noticed. Entering contests was helpful, as was attending writer’s conferences without knowing a single person who could hold my hand through the experience.

Of course, it might also be that God’s plan is unfolding in precisely the way He intended. As I push outside my comfort zone, I must rely on Him for power more and more. God delights in strengthening the weak.

Tell us about the featured book.
PARRISH THE THOGUHT
Unlovable people plague Christine Sterling’s pristine church-lady world—filthy homeless men, a possibly homosexual veterinarian, dark Goth teenagers, to name a few. Although she desires to exhibit Christian love, when it comes time to convert her faith into action, inner struggles weigh her down. These people simply don’t belong in her life.

Then during a storm, surly Goth teenager, Amanda Colter, makes a middle-of-the-night call begging for Christine’s help. Amanda has somehow gotten mixed up in the untimely death of a prominent Nevada City matron, Bessie Parrish. But agreeing to help Amanda thrusts Christine onto a dangerous path. Along the way, her search for truth forces her to confront the ugliness of her own prejudiced heart.

Sounds like a wonderful book. Please give us the first page.
CHAPTER ONE

A man in the women’s restroom?

I slipped on a take-charge attitude and shoved through the mumbling huddle of waiting women. Past pointing fingers and impatient faces, I managed to enter the three-stall bathroom off the church foyer. Sure enough, scuffed boots with significant holes protruded toes-up from under the handicap stall. I bent to inspect them and found one hiked-up pant leg revealing a calf with dark coarse hair. Definitely male.

A neon alert blinked “Warning!” in my brain. I censored the unchristian exclamation that almost tumbled from my lips. Where else but California would you find a man sprawled on the restroom floor?

Of all the nerve! He had also managed to track red Nevada County clay onto our clean shiny floor. A whiff of alcohol and cigarettes reached out to me like clawing fingers. I didn’t try to disguise my disgust.

“Excuse me, sir. Can I help you?”

The shoes didn’t move.

By then, a pack of female onlookers had congregated behind me. At the sound of my voice, they all protested at once like a flock of hens. I faced them, waving my hands and clearing my throat. Their clucking ceased as quickly as it had begun.

“I’ll get help. Meanwhile, please use the restroom downstairs.” I produced a smile and pointed in the general vicinity of the stairs.

You have me hooked. How can readers find you on the Internet?

MOUNTAIN HOMECOMING - Sandra Robbins - One Free Book

Bio: Sandra Robbins, former teacher and principal, is a multi-published author of Christian fiction who lives with her husband in the small college town where she grew up. Her books have been finalists in the Daphne du Maurier Contest for excellence in mystery writing, the Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence for romance, the Holt Medallion, and the American Christian Fiction Writers’ Carol Award. Angel of the Cove, her first book in the Harvest House Publishers historical romance series Smoky Mountain Dreams, released in August, 2012, and was followed by Mountain Homecoming in March 2013. The third book Beyond These Hills will release in September. In April 2013 Summerside (Guidepost) will release A Lady’s Choice which chronicles the plight of suffragists who picketed the White House to gain the vote for women.

Tell us about your salvation experience.
I was eight years old, and my mother and I went with my grandparents to their church during a revival they were having. As I listened to the preacher talk about asking Jesus to come into your heart, I felt as if he was talking to me. When we went home, I told my mother how disturbed I was because I knew I needed to accept Christ. She took me to see our pastor, and he explained the plan of salvation to me in words that a child can understand. As we prayed together, I felt as if the heavy burden in my heart suddenly lifted. When the prayer was over, I broke out into the biggest smile I think I’d ever had. There was a light feeling in my body that made me think I could float on air. I know some people don’t believe that a child of eight is old enough to understand salvation, but I’ve never doubted the experience I had in the living room of my pastor’s home.

I believe a child of eight is old enough. I was seven years old when I accepted Jesus into my life. You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?
Only four? Oh, dear, how can I choose? Since I write historical romance and romantic suspense, I would choose authors who I admire and who I can learn from. First, I would invite my good friend Dorothy Love who I admire for the dedicated and painstaking research she does for the wonderful historical novels she writes. Second, I would choose Debbie Macomber for her friendly style of writing that makes you feel like her characters are your good friends. Third, I would choose Terri Blackstock because her suspense novels served as the             inspiration for me to try my hand at mystery and suspense. Fourth, I would invite Tim Downs, the lone man into the group, because I think his Nick Polchak character in the Bugman Series is one of the funniest and most interesting characters I’ve ever read. If I could gain just a little of what these four wonderful authors do in their books, I would be happy.

Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.
I do have a speaking ministry. Most of my engagements are with book clubs, ladies’ church circle groups, or library groups. I usually give my own testimony of how God has worked in my life as I relate the story of my heart attack beside the River Walk in San Antonio, Texas, and how as we waited for the EMTs to arrive I prayed that God would let me live to complete some things in my life, one of which was trying to become a published author. God blessed me that day with an internationally recognized cardiologist who just happened to be finishing another procedure at the hospital when I arrived. Nine months after that experience I got the call that Barbour was going to buy my first book. I try to impress on those I speak with that God only gives us so much time on this earth, and we need to live each day doing putting our trust in Him as we follow our dreams.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?
The most embarrassing thing happened to me in a restaurant in Nice, France. My husband, my daughter’s family, and I had just been seated after a long wait for a table. I tucked my napkin in my lap and had just picked up the menu when the waiter came and told us we were going to have to move to another table. I was already irritated over the long wait, and I huffed in exasperation as I tossed my    napkin back onto the table which was pre-set with white china, stemmed goblets, and silverware. As I rose from the table, I didn’t realize I had stuck the tablecloth in the waistband of my slacks when I placed the napkin in my lap. Needless to say, as I left the table, so did the tablecloth, and dishes clattered to the floor all around us. My poor husband was more embarrassed than I was as he attempted to catch the falling pieces. I walked without a backward glance at the destruction I’d left behind and took a seat at the new table. Of course my face burned, and I know I should have apologized. But I knew from the angry glances and muttered words of the waiters they were cursing the day the clumsy American came into their restaurant.

People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
I would encourage them to be sure that’s what God wants them to do before they set out on a journey to write a book. Writing isn’t something you decide to do and then sit down and produce the next bestseller. It takes time, a lot of perseverance, and a thick skin to meet all the disappointments that can come your way. Writing a book takes as much preparation as does any other job you would apply for. Arm yourself with some good books on writing, join a professional writers’ organization and surround yourself with unbiased critique partners who will tell you the truth about your efforts. But it can be the best experience of your life if you’re willing to hang in there even when the path seems rocky. I did, and I’ve never regretted it.

Tell us about the featured book.
Mountain Homecoming is the second book in my Smoky Mountain Dream series from Harvest House Publishers. The series is a continuing story of a family whose roots go back for generations in Cades Cove in the Smokies. Mountain Homecoming is set during the time that the lumber companies had bought up a lot of the mountain land and were cutting the trees without regard of what it was doing to the mountain range. It is the love story of a man who returns to the Cove after having to leave when he was a child and the woman who wants to help him overcome the darkness of his past.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Chapter 1
Cades Cove, Tennessee
June, 1914

Rani Martin stared through the cabin window at the Smoky Mountains rising above the valley she loved. Usually the sight of the foggy mists curling around the hills made her happy. But try as she might, she couldn’t find anything to cheer her up today.

There had to be something that would take away the misery gnawing in the pit of her stomach. Poppa always told her she could do anything she set her mind to, but she didn’t know how she could be happy about losing the best friend any girl could ever have.

After today, there would be no reason for her to visit this cabin. Tomorrow Josie Ferguson and her husband Ted would load their belongings in their wagon, take their baby, and do what many of their friends and neighbors had already done—move out of Cades Cove. Josie, the one she’d shared secrets with all her life, would be gone, and Rani would be left behind with only memories of her best friend since childhood.

She didn’t understand what any of the folks who’d left the Cove were thinking. How could they leave the most beautiful place on God’s good earth?

It was springtime, the best time of year in the Cove. The winter snow had melted and the mountain laurel was in bloom. It wouldn’t be long before rhododendrons dotted the mountainsides and azaleas would reappear on Gregory’s Bald. This year, however, Josie wouldn’t be with her to share the wonder of the Cove coming back to life after a hard winter.

DARKNESS BEFORE DAWN - Ace Collins - One Free Book

Welcome back, Ace. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?
I don’t really have any limits on which spiritual themes I address, kind of depends on what I am thinking about in my own life at that time. Darkness Before Dawn is really about moral decisions and the consequences of allowing revenge and retribution rule you life rather than forgiveness and love. Hollywood tends to glorify the former with films about wronged heroes taking the law into their own hands. In real life, the end results of such actions don’t end happily. I wanted to show what that kind of attitude and those types of goals do to a person.

What other books of yours are coming out soon?
I have two that come out this fall, The Cutting Edge, which is a novel that centers on violence against women as well as a world that worships beauty. Also I have a devotional book that will out entitled Music for Your Heart. I am writing three more novels and a really neat nonfiction book for Abingdon at this moment, but they will be out in 2014 and beyond.

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?
This is a difficult question. Living people, even those who are famous and powerful, are not fully formed yet, and we also have access to so much of what they say and do that we feel we know them pretty well anyway. But, if I had to choose, it might be the rock star Bono. He has plenty of rough edges, but he is an interesting man. He lives his faith by not just giving money, but by also going to where he is needed and getting involved in hands-on mission work. So what really, really makes this outspoken man tick and why does he seem so committed to helping the poor. I’d like to know!

What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?
My answer always varies on this one, but at this moment I might chose either Mark Twain or Will Rogers. I have been studying both of these men recently and find their creative minds and unique viewpoints absolutely fascinating.

How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?
My best selling book, The Stories Behind The Best-Loved Songs of Christmas, was rejected time and time again for ten years. If my memory is correct it scored 27 rejections before it finally found a home. When it was published the timing was perfect too. So if you truly believe in your idea, don’t give up on it. At the same time, study the reasons for the rejections, learn from them, do some editing and rewriting before you pitch again.

Tell us about the featured book.
Darkness Before Dawn is an issues driven book. As I have always written mystery or action-adventure, this is a different direction for me.  Darkness explores the loss of a spouse, DUI, abortion, a court system that can be manipulated by money and influence, suicide, and those are just the beginning. Our central character is twenty-eight, a nurse, whose husband is killed by a drunk teenage driver the same day she finds out she is pregnant. Meg is angry and driven. Her rage tends to consume her and she tosses out who she was in an effort to extract the ultimate penalty from the young man who killed her husband. It is the story of faith lost. It is pretty emotional work and an intense read.

Please give us the first page of the book.
When it first reached the inner most depths of her dreams, Meg Richards thought the distant noise came from the alarm clock rousing her for another day of work at the hospital. As she struggled to rise and shake off her deep slumber, the distant ringing sound stopped. As it did, she fell back onto the bed. But a second later, like a determined mosquito, it came back for a second strike. This time, awake enough to separate dream from reality, she understood her cell phone demanded her attention. She didn’t want leave dreams to answer, and, if she had known who had been waiting on the other end of the line, she wouldn’t have. But she couldn’t let phones ring; it wasn’t in her nature. When a phone rang, her curiosity always won out over everything, including her need for sleep.

Awkwardly rolling out of bed, her feet finding the cool, slats of the wooden floor, she blinked a half dozen times until she could finally focus on her clock. 2:32 a.m.!

Trying to shake the grogginess from her head she moaned, “What could anyone want at this time of night?” Even as her heavy eyelids closed out the world, she halfway fell forward toward the sound.

GRAVE CONSEQUENCES - Lisa T Bergren - One Free Book on This Blog, Plus Much More

Welcome back, Lisa. How did you come up with the idea for this story?
Well, since GRAVE CONSEQUENCES is Book 2 in a three-book series, it meant we’d continue on with the characters introduced in GLAMOROUS ILLUSIONS. But I wanted to up the stakes for Cora, both internally and externally, so as her family continues the Grand Tour, she must come to terms with which man truly holds her heart, and really learn how to stand on her own two feet again, even in the face of extreme danger.

If you were planning a party with Christian authors of contemporary fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
Robin Gunn, because she and I have travelled this adult fiction track together from the very beginning. (We were the first two authors for Palisades romances, way long ago.) And I just love her heart; you feel loved when you’re around her. Tricia Goyer, because she always amazes me with all that she’s done and is doing, and inspires me to push forward and outward. Francine Rivers, because she’s thoughtful and tender and usually working on something big internally, which she expresses so beautifully in her fiction. Bill Myers, because I’d want to pick his brain about the supernatural, angels and demons. Jim Bell because he makes me laugh and is so progressive in the arena of bringing light to a dark world. Oh, and only one left?? This is hard. I love all my fellow authors…Jenny B. Jones, because she’s so witty and makes me laugh too. I guess I need more laughter in my life. Don’t we all? And what’s a party without laughter?

That would be an interesting party. Now let’s do that for a party for Christian authors of historical fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
Bodie Thoene, because hers was the first Christian historical fiction that I truly enjoyed. She inspired me to write my very first historical, THE CAPTAIN’S BRIDE. Liz Higgs, because I adore her and am fascinated by how deeply she’s delved into Scottish history and life. Julie Lessman, because she’s so kind and caring and writes so prolifically—I’d like to know what she’s up to next! Sandra Byrd, because she and I share a love for deep history. Julie Klassen and Tamera Alexander, because everyone raves about their books and I’ve been meaning to read them, and maybe having them at my party would finally get me to get them read!!

I’ve read all those authors and know several of them personally. That would be a good party, too. Many times, people (and other authors) think you have it made with so many books published. What is your most difficult problem with writing at this time in your career?
I’m intentionally slowing down in 2013-2014. I think when you write so much, so fast, that after a while, you begin to doubt that you’re writing anything new, anything fresh. It’s important to allow time for the ground to be fallow, if you want to produce your best work.

That is so true. Tell us about the featured book.
GRAVE CONSEQUENCES is the second in the Grand Tour Series. The Grand Tour was often taken by the well-to-do. They travelled through Europe to learn about history and art, see beautiful, famous locales, and meet important people. For Cora, the whole tour is an external journey, but it’s also an internal journey of discovery about her truest identity—as a daughter of God.

I loved book one. Please give us the first page of the book of book two.
A shiver of fear ran down my back as I looked to the busy train platform outside my window. It’s only your imagination, Cora. Silently, I counted to thirty, watching businessmen shake hands before parting. A young husband tenderly bussed his wide on the cheek as she anxiously wound a handkerchief in her hands. A man caught my eye in passing. He smiled and tipped his hat in my direction and I hurriedly glanced back to my lap. But when I lifted my eyes, the blue eyes of the dapper, blond gent inside the train car with me were locked on me again. He was clearly watching me over the top of his newspaper.

I sighed and glanced at Nell, beside me.

“Cora?” she asked, studying my face. “What is it?”

“That man three rows up,” I whispered, careful not to glance his way. “Don’t look right away. Wait until I look back to the window. Then see if he isn’t studying us.”

“All right,” she said, a bit wan. Our narrow escape from kidnappers in Paris had left us all on edge.

The book is at the top of my to-be-read pile. I can’t wait to dive into it. How can readers find you on the Internet?

THE SURVIVOR - DiAnn Mills - One Free Book

Bio: Award-winning author DiAnn Mills is a fiction writer who combines an adventuresome spirit with unforgettable characters to create action-packed, suspense-filled novels. DiAnn’s first book was published in 1998. She currently has more than fifty books published.

Her titles have appeared on the CBA and ECPA bestseller lists and have won placements through the American Christian Fiction Writer’s Carol Awards and Inspirational Reader’s Choice awards. DiAnn won the Christy Award in 2010 and 2011.

DiAnn is a founding board member for American Christian Fiction Writers and a member of Inspirational Writers Alive, Romance Writers of America, and Advanced Writers and Speakers Association. She speaks to various groups and teaches writing workshops around the country. DiAnn is also the Craftsman mentor for the Jerry B. Jenkins Christian Writers Guild.

Welcome back, DiAnn. Tell us a little about yourself and your background.
I’m a wife, mother, and grandmother (Mimi). I’ve lived in Houston for 33 years and love everything about my city and state. I’ve been writing and published since 1996. Love what I do! I also love teaching and mentoring serious writers.

How did you become interested in writing?
I was always interested in writing, but I didn’t have the confidence. It took my husband challenging me to write a book for me to get started. He suggested I quit my job to see if I could get anything published. That was the incentive for me to fulfill my dreams.

What compelled you to write a book on this subject?
I’ve made great friends at FBI Houston. They are supportive, and I consider myself very fortunate. One of the special agents suggested I write from solved cold cases. We searched through their files until I found the case for The Chase and The Survivor. In The Survivor, I was captivated by the courage of a young woman who had overcome a tragedy. I knew she had to be in my story! Although I massaged the real case, much of the character’s backstory is authentic. The real woman’s courage inspired me to show her bravery throughout the book.

What is the main theme or point that you want readers to understand from reading your book? Are there any other themes present in the book?
With God, any adversity can be overcome.

I also deal with forgiveness: ourselves and others.

Are there some specific lessons you hope readers will learn and apply to their lives after reading your book?
I want my readers to close the book and be encouraged and inspired to attempt what appears beyond their reach. I believe in prayer mixed with goals, God goals, and I want my readers to feel the same exhilaration in their spirits.

What makes your book different from any other books similar to yours that are in circulation today?
The characters! The Survivor is like “Castle” meets “Cold Case.” I have a gutsy heroine who is a suspense writer, and an FBI special agent, who is an Indiana Jones type of hero. The two find themselves in the midst of danger with impossible odds. Both are strong and stubborn people. It’s a good thing they love each other!

How does the book intertwine with God’s call on your life and how you are currently serving Him?
I want to write books that mirror real life. We live in an imperfect world, and I want to show how people are touched by those who solve their problems and make decisions from a Christian worldview. Our purpose is to reach out to people, and I find this best through the written word.

Do you have a favorite Scripture verse?
Jeremiah 20:9 If I say, “I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,” there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot. …”

When you are not writing, what do you like to do? Do you have any hobbies?
I love to read, cook, garden, and play with the grandbabies. Reading is a passion, not only my own genre, but nonfiction, and how-to books about the craft. Cooking and gardening help me work through plot points and characterization. Grandbabies are just fun.

As we close, is there anything else you would like to add?
I invite readers to join me on Facebook. We have a fabulous time discussing everything and enjoying the community there. I love to hear from readers!

Tell us about the book.
Kariss meets Dr. Amy Garrett, who survived a brutal childhood attack in which the assailant was never found. Now Dr. Garrett wants her story written in a novel. Kariss wishes she could seek the advice of Special Agent Tigo Harris, but she broke off the relationship a few months prior and seeing him again would be too painful. She interviews Amy and conducts her own research, stepping unaware into a viper's pit of danger. Tigo misses Kariss and wants her back, but he understands why she broke off their relationship. Pride plays a big role in his reluctance to make things right between them. Instead, he concentrates on solving a car bombing and bringing the killer to justice. As Kariss's new story attracts an onslaught of danger that she never expected, can Tigo save the woman he loves and find who wants her dead for writing about an unsolved cold-case?

LOVE IN A BROKEN VESSEL - Mesu Andrews - One Free Book

Welcome back, Mesu. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I write biblical novels because I love to research biblical texts, and a story always seems to emerge. In order to understand God’s Word, I dig into its context—who wrote it, when, and why? When I discover the amazing details of interconnected lives—prophets, kings, patriarchs—the Scripture comes alive for me in ways I hadn’t seen before, which fuels my passion to write the novels others read. I tried to write Bible studies at first, but since I didn’t have the training or degrees to back up my findings, novels became the outlet for the wonderful information I found during my research. And frankly—I think fiction is more fun!

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
My wedding day. It wasn’t a picture-perfect, storybook wedding by some standards. My husband Roy and I were married in a hotel banquet room, and we honeymooned at a Holiday Inn in Cincinnati, Ohio! But I married the man who led me to a saving faith in Jesus Christ, and our love has grown every day since. Our lives haven’t always been easy, nor has our marriage been without bumps in the road, but on my wedding day, I knew the Lord had given me the desire of my heart—a man who loved me more than anyone else on earth. And I’ve never been happier.

How has being published changed your life?
I actually have to WORK now! Ha! I’m thankful and extremely blessed, but I must say it’s been a surprise that with each published book, the workload becomes heavier. I used to write a few days a week and still have time for shopping with my daughters or coffee with friends. Now, those little excursions must be scheduled, or they don’t happen! I’m easily working forty hours a week, sometimes more. Marketing, writing, re-writing, blogging, etc. The time really slips away, and I’ve had to budget my time like a REAL business woman. Oh my! Li’l ol’ me! It’s downright shocking! ;)

What are you reading right now?
I’m reading Jill Eileen Smith’s book, Rebekah, right now. The next one in the queue is Joan Wolf’s, This Scarlet Cord. I try to read as much biblical fiction as possible to stay current on what’s out there. Historical fiction/romance is my favorite genre overall, and I love anything written by Laura Frantz, Tessa Afshar, Francine Rivers…

What is your current work in progress?
I just submitted my rough draft of The Shadow of Jezebel, which is scheduled for release March 2014 (Revell). Here’s a sneak peek:
Princess Jehosheba (Sheba) wants nothing more than to please her Baal-worshiping abba, Judah’s King, and his first wife Queen Atalyah, the daughter of notorious Queen Jezebel. But when a mysterious letter from the dead prophet Elijah predicts doom for the king’s household, Sheba realizes her dark skills as Baal’s priestess reach beyond the world of earthly governments. When both light and darkness align, forcing her to marry Yahweh’s high priest, Sheba enters the unknown world of Yahweh’s Temple. Her husband shows her Yahweh’s truth and a love beyond hope, but can Sheba overcome Jezebel’s lingering torment? Can Yahweh use a fallen priestess to shine the unquenchable light of His love to faithless Judah? The Shadow of Jezebel—Meet the woman who saved a king, delivered a nation, and preserved the Light of the World.

What would be your dream vacation?
A Holyland cruise! I love cruise ships. My hubby and I have cruised several times in the Caribbean and to Mexico, and we toured Israel for ten days in 2000. I’d love to combine my two passions. I’ve always heard it’s cheaper to book passage on a cruise than pay the per/day fee for a nursing home—so maybe when it’s time for me to enter managed care, I’ll reserve my spot on a ship bound for Israel! J

How do you choose your settings for each book?
While some of the ancient locations are specified in Scripture (i.e. Jerusalem, Tekoa, Samaria, etc.), the layout of houses and palaces is largely guesswork and imagination. Some archaeological information is helpful to establish the arrangement of ancient cities or buildings. For instance, much has been revealed about Samaria’s palace being built on a hill, creating a natural fortress, since King Omri was a soldier with a military mind. The layers of each tel (or mound of an archaeological dig) help define to which century a piece of pottery or a building’s foundation belongs, so I must sift carefully which information is relevant for the time period of my characters/story. The same is true for even flowers and trees of Israel. Some of the flora and fauna in Israel today would not have been native to the Land of Scripture, so I can’t include it in my settings. To answer your question, I suppose I don’t get to CHOOSE much of my setting at all. I get to discover it!

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
Mel Gibson. Yes, it’s partly because Braveheart is my favorite movie, but there’s a deeper reason. I want to ask what it was like to direct the movie, The Passion of the Christ. I know how utterly consumed I become in my plots. When my hero or heroine is despairing, I despair. When they’re in a tight spot, I can’t rest until I figure out how to get them relief! I’d like to ask Mr. Gibson how directing The Passion changed him personally? Or did it? What was it like to see Jesus beaten, mocked, crucified—before your very eyes? Talk about the Bible coming alive! I’ve watched that movie once, and I don’t know if I’ll be able to watch again. It crushed me so. I want to meet the man who created such a stirring picture of my Savior…

I’m sure his work on that movie is what made him such a target for the enemy to try to bring down. I’ve prayed a lot for him. What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
I LOVE movies. Old movies, new movies, all kinds of movies! And we recently purchased a small parcel of land in the foothills near our house. My husband and I lived in Indiana all our lives, so moving to the Pacific Northwest in 2007 was sort of magical to us. Its emerald green moss and grass year-round sort of captured our hearts. We’re hoping to clear a little spot and do some exploring before our bones get too old and creaky! Who knows what the Lord has in store for us on our little mountain property—maybe a writer’s getaway.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
My health is always a hurdle to be crossed. I still fight daily migraines, controlled to a dull roar with meds and limited activity. Fibromyalgia and a couple other chronic issues keep me from running marathons (just a figure of speech—I never ran a marathon on my best day!), but the Lord has blessed me with a wonderful doctor who keeps me rolling along. Writing is the perfect ministry for me, and the Lord knew it way before I did. I used to be a TOTAL extrovert. I needed people like I needed air to breathe, but after spending six months in bed, I discovered only One Friend was essential to my existence. All the other folks in my life are a true blessing and icing on the cake—a sweet addition to my world—but I get most of my fellowship through my computer screen these days. That’s why I love connecting with readers on Facebook, my website, Goodreads, and NovelCrossing!

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Trust in God’s timing, and go to writer’s conferences! I’m so thankful I didn’t get a book published when I first began trying. My life was too crazy to have added all that comes with a book contract! I scrimped and saved to attend a writer’s conference each year (or every-other year). The training I received, and the long-term contacts I made were invaluable. Christian publishing is a small world. Hang around long enough, get to know the people, and people will know you. Stubborn proficiency gets published!

Tell us about the featured book.
Love in a Broken Vessel is a biblical novel about Gomer and Hosea. Deserted by those who love her and betrayed by the gods she once worshiped, Gomer lives a bitter existence … until one day her childhood friend reappears—Hosea. But is it too late for Gomer? Is her heart too broken to capture even a drop of love? While unfaithful Israel breaks God’s heart, Gomer’s broken spirit tests Hosea’s faith. Can the two find faith in Yahweh’s power to love?

Please give us the first page of the book.
~Hosea 1:2~

When Yahweh first spoke to Hosea, Yahweh told him, “Marry a prostitute, and have children with that prostitute. The people in this land have acted like prostitutes and abandoned Yahweh.”
Hosea’s empty house throbbed with sweet silence. He soaked it in, letting it nourish him like the last bite of warm, fresh bread soggy with lentil stew. His stomach rumbled, and he realized it was past time for his evening meal.

The stone worktable stood like a sentry in his main room. Covered baskets hung on the wall, filled with day-old bread and hard cheese. The meager fare would suffice until he could soak lentils for tomorrow’s meal. He approached the table, noticing dust dancing in a shaft of dusk’s golden light.

A second look at the glow drew him deeper into contemplation. I only see the dust when light shines through the window. Hosea waved his hand through the light, stirring the dust, but felt no resistance. Visible and real, yet without recognizable sound or weight, the dust was present but immeasurable. A slow, satisfied smile crept across his lips. Now, that is a good topic for the prophets’ class tomorrow. Jonah would enjoy the—

A breeze swept through the house, startling him, swaying the hanging herbs. Hosea turned to the front door, confused. Had the wind blown it open?

The door was closed.

“What was that?” he whispered to no one. The wind stirred inside the house again, this time not a breeze but a gale that whipped his robe around his legs.

The wind spoke. Marry a prostitute.

Hosea gasped. Yahweh?

Marry a prostitute, and have children with that prostitute.

The wind grew stronger, and Hosea covered his face, fell to his knees, listening.

The people of Israel have acted like prostitutes and abandoned Yahweh.

The wind stopped. All was silent. Tranquil again.

Thank you, Mesu, for sharing with us today. There are many parallels between your life and mine. The greatest is that I have always been an extrovert, but in this season of my life, I am staying home because of infirmities and spending most of my time writing and connecting to my readers and other authors.
