SAVING MOSSY POINT - Donna Winters - One Free Book

Welcome back, Donna. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
As a writer, I learned early on that I was not capable of writing secular romances. My internal values and my Christian faith had to come through in stories that I would share with readers, stories that would be appropriate for ages 12 and up and would resonate with multiple generations (daughters, mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers).

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
I was really elated to learn that the novel I wrote as a cultural legacy to my hometown’s Erie Canal history had been the subject of a proclamation by the village council. On March 12, 2013, the mayor and the four village trustees of Brockport, New York, proclaimed April 2013 Bluebird of Brockport month and encouraged all citizens of Brockport to read the book. It’s a great honor to have my historical novel recognized by my hometown’s village board.

That is wonderful. How has being published changed your life?
Being published has given me recognition among readers, the opportunity for sharing a moral message with thousands, and most important, positive feedback that keeps me going.

What are you reading right now?
I am reading Spirit of the North by Tyler Tichelaar (Tyler is the editor of Saving Mossy Point), The ESV Study Bible, James—Mercy Triumphs by Beth Moore, How to Hear God’s Voice by Mark and Patti Virkler, and God Heard Their Cry by Ray Vander Laan. I just finished reading The Promise of Palm Grove, Book One in the Amish Brides of Pinecraft series by Shelley Shepard Gray, a very good story.

Yes, it is. I recently featured Shelley’s story on this blog. What is your current work in progress?
My current work in progress is the revisions for the early titles in my Great Lakes Romances© series. I am leaving the plots the same, but improving the reader experience by eliminating head-hopping and deepening the third person point-of-view. As each title is revised, I give it a new cover and make it available as both a Kindle and a paperback.

What would be your dream vacation?
Hawaii. Never been there but sure would like to see it. My parents visited there in the 1970s. My father loved it. He was a florist in New York State and was fascinated by the tropical plants in Hawaii. He loved to travel but didn’t get to do it very much because my mother did not want to travel. Long after he passed away, my mother admitted that she wished she had agreed to go on more trips with Dad. I’ve heard it said that deathbed regrets are about what a person did NOT do in life, not about what they DID do. I’m keeping that in mind as I age.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I choose settings that either I or my readers are interested in. My series started with the setting most visited in Michigan: Mackinac Island. The two titles that followed included other Great Lakes ports or regions that I thought readers would enjoy. By the fourth title, several readers had asked for stories about lighthouses, so I wrote a mini-series set at lighthouses for titles four, five, and six. Then a reader asked for a story set in Traverse City, a great Northern Michigan town, so I wrote that as a spin-off of the lighthouse stories based on a one-sentence plot suggestion. In Saving Mossy Point—In the Fifty-First State of Superior, I wanted to write about the Upper Peninsula culture I have been experiencing for the last twelve years without calling it the Upper Peninsula.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
My husband, because he is the one I love above all others on earth and the one whose company I enjoy most. This question begs for a more diverse answer, but I really can’t name anyone else with whom I’d rather spend time.

I understand. I love spending time with my husband, too. What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
Walking the dogs and taking motor home trips with my husband and the canines.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
Short-term memory loss as I age is making book-length writing more and more challenging. I compensate for it by setting my work aside for a period of time and then coming back to it and rereading it quickly to find inconsistencies. Another tactic is to get others to read the draft for errors.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Be persistent. Don’t give up. Join writer organizations. Read extensively in the genre you are writing. Don’t expect to get rich. Honor God with your choice of words.

Tell us about the featured book.
When retired schoolteacher and widow Betty Hanson learns that the 51st State of Superior is about to close Mossy Point State Park, she expresses her concern to Ray Engstrom, the head of the General Land Office. But Mr. Engstrom reveals a discouraging fact: Mossy Point State Park has never paid its own way since it opened back in 1959. And according to him, it “has the same chance of running in the black as a turtle has of flying.”

Determined to prove Mr. Engstrom wrong, Betty gathers help from friends and neighbors. A plan emerges to open a folk school, a place where students of all ages can come to learn a craft, and work begins to put Mossy Point State Park on solid fiscal ground. But not everyone is on board with the plan. At times, Betty almost finds herself sidetracked by dealing with her estranged daughter and grandson, who suddenly appear back in her life, and then there is her close friend Lee, who seems to want more than friendship. The State itself seems to have alternative plans for the park, and when an accident threatens to destroy both Betty and the park’s finances, all of her plans could fall apart. What can possibly turn their fortunes around and make a turtle fly?

Please give us the first page of the book.
“Mr. Engstrom, you can’t sell Mossy Point State Park!” Betty Hanson slid to the edge of her chair and stared straight into the pale blue eyes of the head of the General Land Office in the recently formed State of Superior. She’d sought this meeting with him at his office in Superior Bay, the new state capital, to warn him of the devastating effect a park closing would have on the Village of Mossy Point. But convincing him wouldn’t be easy. His gaze never seemed to meet hers for more than a nanosecond.

“Is that what you came here to tell me? You said you had some urgent information on a serious threat to state land. I assumed it concerned illegal activity, but selling a park? Come, now.”

“Selling the park is a serious threat.”

“Why not sell it? That park’s a real money pit.” As Mr. Engstrom leaned his bulky torso back in his creaky leather chair, Betty envisioned a button popping off his too-tight shirt and splashing in the coffee mug on the edge of his desk. Her lips twitched into a smile that she instantly suppressed.

BACKFIRE - Elizabeth Goddard - One Free Book

Welcome back, Beth. Do you have a favorite genre to write? If so, what is it?
I love romantic suspense! I’ve always loved a suspense element along with romance even when reading a historical novel.

If you didn’t live in the part of the country where you do, where would you live?
I’d love to live in the Pacific Northwest again. Maybe Washington instead of Oregon this time.

What foreign country would you like to visit and why?
Scotland because I love the landscape and the accents and the lore. Italy because I love anything Tuscan.

Describe what you think would be the most romantic vacation you could take.
I never thought I’d want to go to Hawaii because I love Mountains and winter sports, but I’ve been thinking about that lately after reading a Kristen Heitzmann book set there.

Where would you like to set a story that you haven’t done yet?
I’ll probably keeping setting my stories in the Pacific Northwest for a while because I love it so much, but since I recently moved to Minnesota I’m starting to research and look around for key locations to set a story.

What is the main theme of this novel?
Beauty for ashes. That in our struggles we sometimes wonder why bad things happen, but God takes the bad things and makes something good out of them.

Tell us about the story.
Here’s the blurb:
Book 3 in Mountain Cove
NOWHERE LEFT TO HIDE
Tracy Murray had thought she’d be safe disappearing in the wilds of Alaska after her testimony put away a gang leader. But the gang symbol tattooed on an attacker’s arm means the clock has run out. She’s been found—and she knows the killers won’t let her escape alive again. She can’t fight an entire gang alone—she needs help. But when she finds herself relying on widowed firefighter David Warren, a new struggle emerges. Fleeing Alaska and cutting all ties could be the only way to survive…but it would mean leaving her heart behind.

Mountain Cove: In the Alaskan wilderness, love and danger collide

Please give us the first page of the book.
Mountain Cove, Alaska
Tracy Murray knew she had little time. A storm brewed in the distance.

But Solomon’s urgent bark pulled her up the rising trail, indicating that there was someone in danger.

She sucked more air into her lungs that were already screaming from her workout.

Any other season on this trail—spring, winter, fall—she’d have to be concerned about the avalanche danger. But not during the summer, and because the season was so brief in Alaska, Tracy had every intention of enjoying the outdoors. Out for a run with her search-and-rescue golden retriever, summer abounded around her in the form of wildflowers and sundry small wildlife scurrying in and out of the flora.

Tracy had been heading for Keller Falls, four miles up the trail, until Solomon had taken off. She’d let him run free, and hoped to practice a few commands. Up until a moment ago he’d run beside Tracy, surprisingly ignoring his natural instinct to chase forest animals, but then he’d taken off. With his continued excited and urgent barks, she knew that he had caught a human scent and was sending his vocal cue to alert Tracy that something was wrong.

Dread replaced the serenity she’d found on the trail.

FINDING OLIVIA - Darlene Wells - One Free Book

Welcome back, Darlene. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
My desire with every book I write, every story I tell, is to bring readers to a deeper understanding of God’s love, and his grace. Hopefully they see something in one of my characters that speaks to them, and helps them in that way.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
The day our first son was born, for sure. We had tried to have a baby for four years. We’d gone through a lot of infertility testing, meds, all that. And we just didn’t know if we would ever have children. So, when I found out I was pregnant, I was afraid through much of the pregnancy, still not knowing what the problem had been. When Zach was born, I fully understood what a miracle he was!

How has being published changed your life?
Holding a book in my hands, with my name on it, has been a lifelong dream. It still feels unreal. But the thing that is the biggest blessing, and the most FUN is to hear from readers, about how they enjoyed a story, or learned something. It has just been very fulfilling and inspires me to keep writing.

What are you reading right now?
I actually just started a non-fiction book called Hiding in the Light, about a young muslim woman who converted to Christianity. She risked everything and has had to live her life in hiding because of that choice.

What is your current work in progress?
Book #3 in my Days of Grace Trilogy is, Loving Tilly. The trilogy wraps up, right back in the small town where it started. Readers will get to see what has happened with all the original characters, plus be introduced to Tilly Scott, a woman who has struggled her entire life with accepting love and friendship. Her relationship with God seems very strong, but it’s works-based because she really doesn’t think that even God loves her. The hero, Charlie, who is someone I am having a blast writing, will help bring her around!

What would be your dream vacation?
My dream vacation would be a trip to all the historic places in the United States. I am a very patriotic person. Our nation’s history fascinates me. I would love to stand in some of the most important places in the history of our country.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I try to write what I know, so that it comes across as realistic as possible. I’m a Northern California girl. So far, that’s where my solo books have been set. With the novellas I’m a part of, the settings were agreed on by our whole writing team.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
I have to go to my patriotic sensibilities again! I would LOVE to spend an evening with George W. Bush, on the condition that he gets to answer ALL my questions, classified or not, LOL.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
I have always loved interior design. I also enjoy all kinds of crafts. Sometimes I have so many ideas in my head of things to make or to try, I have to remind myself that I need to write!

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
Procrastination. I think a lot of creative people tend to be procrastinators. We like to create as the mood strikes. But I’m learning that I have to set a regular word count per day, to make sure I don’t get caught unprepared when a deadline comes.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Just write. Whatever it is that’s burning in your heart to get out onto the page, write it. Surround yourself with people who are farther ahead of you in the process and learn all you can from them. And I tell everyone to join American Christian Fiction Authors. I joined in 2004, and it’s the wisest decision I have ever made regarding my writing.

Tell us about the featured book.
The featured book, Finding Olivia, is book #2 in my Days of Grace trilogy. It takes the character of Olivia, from book #1, and follows her on her journey to Hollywood in 1937, to become an actress. Olivia struggles with issues of abandonment and feeling insignificant, unwanted. She thinks that becoming rich and famous is the answer. Until she meets Nathan Grant, a young man who plans to be a pastor, who struggles with guilt. It’s a story of God’s love for us, regardless of who walks out of our lives.

Please give us the first page of the book.
June 1937
With her right hand, Olivia Hawkins grasped the handrail of the steps that led her from the train to her new life. In her left hand, the suitcase she’d found under her father’s bed. In the suitcase, all her belongings.

She stared in wonder at the sheer number of people at the Los Angeles train station. Men in suits, carrying briefcases, rushing to places unknown. Porters in their bow ties and caps, carrying as many suitcases as they could handle. Flustered mothers desperately trying to reign in their children. People who looked like tourists, studying maps and arguing over which direction to go.

The sights and sounds dizzied Olivia a bit. A warm southern California breeze blew a wayward curl in front of her eyes, tickling her lashes. She swept it away and held her hand to her stomach. Such flutters of excitement! Her eyes followed a nearby palm tree, its full length, reaching up to the clear blue sky. She squinted and shielded her eyes from the sun.

Someone nudged her from behind, nearly knocking her case from her grip.

“Hey, kid, you gonna get off the train, or just stand there and stare all day? Get a move on, I gotta be someplace.”

“Oh.” Olivia turned around to face the stranger. She bit her lip to hide her intimidation, looking up at the man in a black suit and black fedora. “I’m terribly sorry, sir. It’s just that I’ve never been to Los Angeles before.”

The man rolled his dark eyes. “Well, that’s great, lady. But can you do your gawking after you get off the train?”

Olivia’s cheeks blazed at the angry stares and murmuring behind him. She scurried down the train steps, mumbling another apology.

THE PROPOSAL AT SIESTA KEY - Shelley Shepard Gray - One Free Book, Plus More

Welcome back, Shelley. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
God has given me so many blessings in my chosen career! I am hopeful He will continue to want me to write. I’m currently under contract for several books through 2016, so I will be busy working on new Amish novels as well as some historicals set in Texas.

Tell us a little about your family.
I’ve been married for 25 years to my college sweetheart. We have two children who are now adults! Our son is named Arthur, and he lives in Colorado. My daughter, Lesley, just graduated college and recently got engaged! She lives in Kentucky. They are awesome kids and awesome people. We also have two dachshunds who keep me company during the day.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
I’m happy to say that writing has not changed my reading habits. I’ve always read several books a week and I still do. I’ve also never been a critical reader. I rarely read novels and criticize the author. If it’s a good story, I’m happy.

What are you working on right now?
I’m happy to say I’m in the middle of two books. One is an Amish novel, which will be published in May or June of 2016. Another is a western historical. Hmm. Oh, I just received some revisions for another book. It’s the first book in next year’s Charm series, and it will be published in February, 2016.

What outside interests do you have?
I love to travel. My love to experience new places is one of the reasons I go to so many book signings. I love seeing different places. My husband and I also love to travel for fun. We have a big trip to Europe planned for next fall. When I’m not planning places to go, I like to bake and walk and hang out with our dogs. I’m very easy to please!

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I chat with my editors at Harper Collins for each series’ setting. For my historicals, I usually come up with a place and time that interests me then wait and hope that it interests them, too!

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
I can’t think of anyone famous! I would actually simply like to spend an evening with someone fun who has great stories to tell! I would love that.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
That I would be able to make a career out of it. I had so many rejections and so many books that didn’t sell well when I first started, I got very discouraged. If I had known that my hard work would one day pay off, I think I would have slept better at night! I used to spend many nights wishing I was a better writer.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
He is currently teaching me to enjoy each day more. I work hard and I plan a lot. I’m currently working on relaxing a little more every day! One of the best things I’ve learned to do is to never turn on the computer on Sundays. I love having a real day off.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
Write every day that you can, even if it’s just a page or two.
Take chances. Work on projects that you aren’t sure will be successful. Send out work to agents and editors!
Accept criticism. When an agent or editor or critique partner notices a way you can improve, listen. Everyone can get better at something … even writers!

Tell us about the featured book.
The Proposal at Siesta Key is the story of Penny Troyer and Michael Knoxx. Michael is kind of a celebrity in the Mennonite and Amish community. Their paths cross in Pinecraft when Penny goes to hear him speak. I love these characters because while at first they seem so very different, they both have had to overcome a lot of obstacles.

I have read this book and loved it. Please give us the first page of the book for my readers.
The moment Penny Troyer turned the dead bolt on the front door, she knew it was a big mistake.

No matter what her mother was doing, or where she was, she always, always heard the distinctive snap of the front door deadbolt disengaging.

Penny froze, feeling vaguely like a burglar caught red-handed, and mentally began to count to five.

She barely made it to three.

With all the fanfare of a trio of trumpeter swans, her mother’s high-pitched call echoed down the hall. “Penny? Penny, what are you doing?”

Penny bit back an irritated retort—something she’d been doing more and more lately. “Nothing.”

“It must have been something. I am fairly positive I heard you at the door.”

God had really blessed her mother with hearing that was just too good. “I’m simply going to sit on the front porch.”

Practically before Penny had time to take another breath, her mother appeared in the entryway. Her hands clutched the sides of her apron, and concern shone in her truly beautiful periwinkle-colored eyes. “Why?”

UNDERCOVER BRIDE - Margaret Brownley - One Free Book

Welcome back, Margaret. As an author, I know it takes a lot of people to birth each book. Who were the people involved in the birthing of this book, and what were their contributions?
You're absolutely right, Lena! It does take a lot of people. For this book I'd have to travel back in time to 1852 when Kate Warne asked Allan Pinkerton to hire her. I've never been able to find out why a young widow would want to be a detective—especially at that time in history—but I'll always be grateful to her for being the inspiration behind my Undercover Ladies series.

I also have to mention my wonderful agent, Natasha Kern, who knew my idea would make a great series even before I did. Also, on hand all through the birthing process was my editor Annie Tipton whose sharp eye and thoughtful suggestions always makes a book better. Also, I can't forget to mention the whole Barbour support team.

I also have to mention my readers. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't be writing.

Oh yes, we love our readers. If you teach or speak. What’s coming up on your calendar?
I usually have speaking engagements lined up for the year but other than being on a panel at the Cowboy Festival in Newhall I'm taking a break. I've got too many books to write.

That’s a wonderful reason not to have a full speaking schedule. If you had to completely start over in another place, where would you move, and why?
It would take an act of congress to move me out of California. I love the weather. Also I love that in less than an hour's time I can travel to the ocean, the mountains, the desert, or countryside. Nope, not moving.

If you could only tell aspiring novelists one thing, what would it be?
Make your readers use their senses. Give them something to see, hear, taste, or smell in every paragraph.

You’ve been asked to be in charge of a celebrity cruise. Who would you ask to take part, and why? (AS in what program, singers, etc. [it doesn’t have to be writing related])
I'd probably invite the entire cast of Dancing With The Stars and they'd have to teach everyone aboard ship the Argentine Tango. Yep, even my non-dancing husband.

In a nutshell: Maggie Michaels is sent to Arizona Territory as an undercover mail order bride to track down the notorious Whistle-Stop Bandit. With the clock ticking, she has to prove the suspect guilty before the wedding—or she could end up as his wife!

Sounds wonderful. Please give us the first page of the book.

Arizona Territory
1880
Maggie Taylor spotted the thief the moment she stepped off the Southern-Pacific train and onto the open air platform.

As a Pinkerton operative, she'd dealt with her share of pickpockets through the years, but this one put the profession to shame. The man made no attempt to be discreet; he simply bumped into a male passenger and walked away with the man's gold watch.

Normally, Maggie wouldn't hesitate to go after the culprit, but today she had bigger fish to fry. Chasing after a third rate thief could jeopardize months of hard work and careful preparation and she couldn't take the chance.

It was only after he targeted a young mother with three small children that Maggie changed her mind. The man had to be stopped.

Threading her way through the crowd, she reached the woman ahead of the thief and picked up the drawstring handbag carelessly left next to a carpetbag.

"Your purse, ma'am. There are thieves around. Better keep an eye on it."

The harried mother took the bag from her. She looked no older than nineteen or twenty. "Thank you," she murmured as if thieves were the least of her problems.

Satisfied that the pickpocket's latest attempt at debauchery had been thwarted, Maggie pushed him from her mind and swung her gaze over the crowd. Never before had a new assignment filled her with such anxiety. But then again, never had she attempted such a daring venture.

Would she recognize the suspect on sight?

According to Pinkerton files, Garrett Thomas stood six feet tall, was thirty-five years of age, and had dark hair and blue eyes. His one outstanding feature was a scar along the side of his face—a war wound. He was also extremely clever. Some said even lucky. A suspected thief and murderer, Thomas had endured the Battle of Gettysburg and a year in the Andersonville rebel prison— an impressive record of survival by anyone's standards.

Though he was suspected of committing a daring train robbery, his most notable achievement was evading Pinkerton's best detectives for nearly two years. We'll see how long your luck holds out this time, Mr. Thomas. Eventually even a cat runs out of lives.

After checking that her feathered hat was angled just right, she pushed a strand of auburn hair behind her ear and smoothed the bun at her nape. Her wardrobe had been chosen with utmost care and her demeanor meticulously polished.

The goal was to look fashionable but not ostentatious; to act domesticated without appearing dull. At all times she had to be charming, well-spoken and industrious. In matters of politics, religion and finances she must take care not to express a contrary view as she was often inclined to do. In other words, she had to look and act like a woman that any man would be proud, indeed anxious, to wed.

Given her somewhat opinionated and independent spirit, curtailing her impulsive nature would be her greatest challenge. She couldn't afford to do or say anything without careful consideration of the consequences. Not this time.

Not only did she have to make a fine impression but one that would throw no suspicion her way. "Dazzle Thomas with your charm and good looks," Mr. Pinkerton had said. "He won't suspect a thing."

In her current state, she'd be lucky to dazzle a horsefly. She was hot and she was hungry and more than anything, travel-weary.

21 DAYS OF GRACE - Compiled by Kathy Ide - One Free Book

Dear Readers, I’ve known Kathy Ide for a number of years. We’ve been to writers’ retreats together, attended some of the same conferences, and she has been the editor for at least one of my books. I know she edited Pirate’s Prize. And I’ve been in some of the books she’s compiled. I'm excited to introduce you to this new series.

Welcome, Kathy. Tell us about your newest book.
21 Days of Grace: Stories that Celebrate God’s Unconditional Love is the first in a series of Fiction Lover’s Devotionals, published by BroadStreet Publishing. It’s a collection of short fiction stories, all written by different authors—some new, some intermediate, and some well-known, beloved best sellers. Each story is followed by a brief Life Application, written by the author of the story, that suggests how the messages inherent in the tale can be applied to the reader’s daily life.

What’s unique about this series?
A lot of readers today love Christian fiction. But in their quiet times with the Lord, they want something with a little more depth … and something a little shorter than a novel. There are lots of compilations with short true stories out there. The Fiction Lover’s Devotionals are for readers who enjoy fiction. For people who haven’t discovered the joys of Christian fiction, these short stories will be a great introduction to it.

Which authors are included in this book?
21 Days of Grace has chapters by Angela Hunt, Deborah Raney, Cindy Woodsmall, Tracy Higley, Cecil Murphey, DiAnn Mills, Kathi Macias, and more. Bios of contributing authors are featured at the end of each chapter, so you can get something new from the novelists you already know and love as well as samples from other authors you can add to your favorites list.

How do you see people using these devotionals?
The books are being published as hardcover gift books—small enough to take with you wherever you go, and with chapters short enough to read anywhere. You can enjoy these stories over breakfast, at lunch break, before bed, or curled up in your favorite chair with a cup of coffee or tea. 21 Days of Grace just released on June 1st, just in time for summer, so you can take it to the beach or on vacation. These books could also be used in group settings—for your book club, Bible study, life group, Sunday school class, or just getting together with friends. They make terrific gifts too!

What are the other book titles in this series?
21 Days of Christmas: Stories that Celebrate God’s Greatest Gift (which has a chapter by Lena Nelson Dooley in it!), comes out this October. 21 Days of Love: Stories that Celebrate Treasured Relationships, is scheduled for next Valentine’s Day. And 21 Days of Joy: Stories that Celebrate Motherhood, is for Mother’s Day.

How do you find the authors for your books?
I’ve been in the Christian publishing industry for almost twenty years, and I’ve attended a lot of writers’ conferences in that time. That has given me an opportunity to meet numerous authors at all stages of the writing process. Most of the authors in 21 Days of Grace are people I’ve met in person or are editing clients of mine. But I’ve put call-outs on my website and social media, and I’ve received several great stories from authors I’ve never met or worked with before.

How do you choose which stories to include?
It’s not easy! As word gets out about the series, I’m getting more and more submissions. And I can only choose 21 for each book. The main determining factor, to me, is whether the story touches my heart, whether I can sense the Holy Spirit speaking through the characters and their situations. Almost as important is the use of good fiction-writing techniques. Even the best story can be powerless if it’s not told really well.

Do you edit the submissions?
Every single one. What can I say? I’m a freelance editor—it’s what I do! I try my best to keep the author’s voice and style. But I can always find a few things to tweak that, in my opinion, make the story stronger. When I send my revised versions to the authors, I always encourage them to work with me on any changes I made that they’re not totally satisfied with. I want the final product to be something we’re both excited about.

Where can people purchase the book?
The print version of 21 Days of Grace can be ordered online at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, ChristianBook, Walmart, and Cokesbury. The e-book is available from Amazon, BN.com, iBooks, and Google Play.

What do you want readers to take away from the book?
I am a huge fan of Christian fiction. The Holy Spirit has spoken to me many times through novels, as I relate personally to the characters and their situations. I believe the same thing can happen for readers through the short stories in these devotionals—especially with the brief Life Applications at the end of each one. Also, when I’m looking for a new book to read, I tend to go for the authors I’m already familiar with. It’s tough to decide which new novelists to try because I don’t know what their style is and whether it’s something I’m going to like. Reading short stories from a variety of novelists all in one book will give fiction fans an opportunity to sample different authors and find new ones they enjoy.

What can readers do after they read the book?
There’s a forum on FictionDevo.com where people can post responses to the book and the stories in it. They can also do that on Facebook.com/FictionDevo.

Are you looking for stories for future books in this series?

I am currently open to submissions for the Mother’s Day devotional. (Details and guidelines are on the FictionDevo.com website.) If the first books sell well, the publisher will continue the series, so we could have several more titles to come.

Thank you, Kathy, for sharing this new book with my readers. I know they'll love it. I plan to use my copy as my devotional as soon as it arrives.

SILVER SPURS - Miralee Ferrell - One Free Book

Welcome back, Miralee. You have a lot of books out now. What is your favorite setting to use in your books?
For my historical romances, I love any setting in the Old West, especially the states where cowboys, ranches, and outlaws could be found. But for my middle-grade contemporary horse novels, I love setting those close to where I live, as I know the area so well and have ridden my horse here for years.

What do you look for when you’re shopping for a book to buy for yourself?
I have a wide variety of interests. Right now I’m hooked on fantasy and other speculative fiction. Other times I’m hungry for a good suspense or mystery, while at others I’m in the mood for historical romance that contains action, adventure, and anything Old West!

Give us a little tour of the setting for this book.
It’s set in a very small rural town in Oregon, only an hour or less from Mt. Hood, and about ten minutes or so from the Columbia River Gorge. There are a lot of horses, orchards, hay fields and pasture, and a saw mill. Lots of green, snow in the winter, and it’s become more and more of a tourist area due to the beautiful setting and variety of things to do.

What other books do you have coming out soon?
There will be two more books in the Horses and Friends series, with the final one releasing in February, 2016. I also have two different novellas that are part of historical romance collections. Summertime Brides is the first collection, and my book is The Dogwood Bride, and the other book is part of Cowboy Brides, and my title is Love’s Sweet Storm, set in Colorado.

Please give us a glimpse inside your home.
Our home is located nine miles from a small town, across the Columbia River that separates Washington (our town) from Oregon. We own eleven acres, a two story house and garage, and a VERY large yard and garden area. I love all the flowers and grass, but it’s it takes a lot of time to keep up. I’ve planted delphinium, dozens of day lilies, roses, Canterbury bells, peonies, and many other flowers … not to mention blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries.

Is this novel part of a series or a stand-alone book?
Silver Spurs is the second book in the series, and the books follow the same kids and their adventures.

Tell us about the story.
Kate’s dream of owning a horse has finally happened. But now her best friend Tori has no money to buy a horse. So Kate comes up with a plan—she’ll raise money by boarding horses and hosting a show in her family’s barn.

It seems the perfect solution until Melissa, the girl who disses Kate and Tori at school, shows up to board her horse, determined to compete in their show and win the silver spurs. Will their plan be ruined—or does God have something better in store for them all?

Silver Spurs is a tale of overcoming fears and trusting God with your dreams.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Kate Ferris hauled back on the reins and brought her Thoroughbred mare to a stop. Her arms ached with the effort. Capri was a lot of horse to keep under control.

The mare tossed her head, and froth flew from her mouth. Kate patted the mare’s neck, her palms sweaty against the dark-red coat. “Easy, girl. Settle down. It’s okay.” It’s really not okay. Kate frowned, hoping her voice didn’t show her frustration. Determination pushed her forward. No way could she quit and let Capri win this battle. Kate hadn’t learned as much as she’d liked in the few lessons she’d taken while working at the English-riding barn a couple of miles from home, but she knew she shouldn’t reward Capri by dismounting when the mare wasn’t responding to her cues.

The chestnut horse threw her head again and pranced in place.

Kate gave an exasperated sigh. “All right, let’s try it again. Slower this time.” She nudged her mount into a trot along the rail of the outdoor arena, trying to focus on rising and falling to the beat of the Thoroughbred’s long stride. Getting the hang of posting hadn’t been easy, but Kate finally had it mastered. At least she hoped she’d mastered it.
