THE GUILT TRIP - Pat Simmons - One Free Book

Welcome, Pat. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
My strengths and weaknesses can be intertwined in one or more characters’ personalities in any one of my novels. But it’s not limited to me, I might write other people’s personalities and mannerisms into the characters.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
You want me to limit my craziest to just one? Hmmm. I still can’t think of anything recent.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
It’s more like I first accepted that I had indeed become a writer after my first novel was published and I received that first encouraging email. That’s when I said to myself, “I really am an author.” Up until that time, I didn’t know if I had what it took to hold a person’s attention with my musings or not.

Those emails from readers are so important to us as authors. Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
Christian romance, biographies, and anything connected with genealogy, especially African-American related material.

I loved the way you used the genealogy information in this book. How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
Take naps when I’m exhausted. I’m deadline oriented, so I’m a stickler when it comes to making a schedule whether it’s cleaning, writing, or sewing, I believe in sticking to it. That’s the only way I can be productive.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
Sometimes I have a name, but I have also changed names several times before I finish the story because the name didn’t fit the personality I wanted to portray. For example, in a recent ebook, I had Juanita as the main character’s name. By the time I finished, I had changed it to Jillian. I couldn’t see a woman named Blanche being a spitfire character in my book, but I could see Cheney or Tyra.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
First off that God chose to use me to share the good news about His salvation plan and purpose through entertaining Christian tales. Second is that others have nominated my work for awards.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
Considering I never wanted to be an animal, it would be a toss up between a bird and fish because they both are beautiful creatures. But seriously, I prefer being a person.

What is your favorite food?
Candy, hot dogs. and popcorn (a must have when watching a movie).

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
Learning to manage my time, so I’m not burning a candle at midnight to meet a deadline. I’m a slow writer—about two pages an hour. Based on that calculation, I know how long it will take me to finish a 70-85,000 word novel if I write 5 days a week.

Tell us about the featured book.
In The Guilt Trip, Aaron “Ace” Jamieson is living a carefree life. He’s good-looking, respectable when he’s in the mood, but his weakness is women. If a woman tries to ambush him with a pregnancy, he takes off in the other direction. It’s a lesson learned from his absentee father that responsibility is optional.

Talise Rogers has a bright future ahead of her. She’s pretty and has no problem catching a man’s eye, which is exactly what she does with Ace. Their chemistry is undeniable and their passion explosive, but there’s one catch. Trapping Ace Jamieson is the furthest thing from Talise’s mind as she is determined to be a good parent when she learns she is pregnant and Ace rejects her. “I want nothing from you Ace, not even your name,” Talise means it.

But Ace’s big brother and cousins don’t plan to let the child who represents the twelfth generation descendant of a royal African tribe leave the fold. Whether Ace decides to accept his responsibility or not, Ace’s family embraces Talise to his shame. Before long, it’s his own guilt trip that leads him to the prayer altar.

He learns the blessings from his Heavenly Father to overpower the sins of his earthly dad.

The Guilt Trip is Book II in the Jamieson Legacy, but is actually a spinoff of the Guilty series.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Chapter 1

Twenty-eight-year-old Aaron “Ace” Jamieson wasn’t married and never had been married. He wasn’t planning to pick out a tuxedo to meet a woman at the altar any ime soon. To maintain that resolve, Ace displayed the highest level of professionalism when it came to playing the dating game.

He had learned from his buddies that at the three-month mark, women began fantasizing about permanent residency. Therefore, his benchmark was seventy-two days or less. Ace was upfront with the ladies that he wasn’t looking for anything serious.

As he shaved, he snickered, recalling some of the tactics women used to trap him into marriage: lavish gifts, on-demand intimacy, or claiming to carry his love child.

Shaking his head in disgust, Ace rinsed off his razor. He methodically massaged aftershave on his face and throat. Women’s bluffs didn’t make him blink. He would not be lured into any baby momma drama.

But something had happened to his determination three months ago when his cousin’s friend introduced him to Talise Rogers. She swept him off his feet on the first date. There was something alluring about her independence, confidence and her exotic dark features on brown sugar skin.

Humph! Their connection was more than the explosive physical attraction. If there was a soul mate, Talise was it. Friends called her Tallie. To Ace, she was his Tay. He was convinced she had an invisible grip on him that was about to bring him down, and he wasn’t complaining. It took some back-and-forth battling between his mind and his heart, but Ace thought Talise just might be the one he couldn’t let get away.

And thank you, Pat, for agreeing to be on my blog when I contacted you. The premise of your book intrigued me for a lot of reasons, and I read it as soon as it arrived. I loved your story and had a hard time putting it down. It was written from an African-American perspective, but the story could be pulled from almost any culture in these modern times. A very good book. My readers will love it, too.

SOMEWHERE TO CALL HOME - Janet Lee Barton - One Free Book

Welcome, Janet. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I feel the Lord called me to write the kind of books I do. I hope my stories are uplifting and that they touch reader's hearts and in someway draw the reader closer to the Lord.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
The day my daughter was born was the happiest day in my life after I became a Christian.

How has being published changed your life?
I'm not sure it's changed that much, other than it gives me great joy to write and to hear how something I've written has touched a reader's life. I sometimes have to work daily life around my writing or maybe I should say work my writing around my daily life.

What are you reading right now?
I'm so behind in my reading! I've been reading the Love Inspired Historical Irish Brides series about three sisters who come to America. I'm enjoying their journey!

I read that series. It was very good. What is your current work in progress?
Right now I'm waiting on edits for the second story in what I call my Heaton House series, tentatively called, To Trust Her Heart. And I'm working on the third book in the series that takes place in late 1890's New York City.

What would be your dream vacation?
I'm the only one in my family who has been to Hawaii and I'd love to have a family vacation there.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
Up until this series, I always chose places I'd lived, that I was familiar with. But after 9/11, seeing how New Yorkers reached out to help each other, I felt drawn to the city and its history. Then I started getting ideas and began researching and the Lord gave me the idea for a series. I love writing these stories set in New York City at a time when women began joining the workforce in large numbers. I like being able to set stories in so many places in the city, and telling stories about the poor, the rich, and the middle class and tying them all together with a boardinghouse.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
I think it would be President George Bush. I think he dealt with so much in such an honorable way, and I have such respect for him and his wife. So If I could spend time with them as a couple that would be even better.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
I love to cook, sew, and do crafts. I just don't have enough time to do it all.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
Procrastination. I've found that if I start writing as soon as I get up, I get much more accomplished. And for me, if I get that word count in early, I don't feel guilty about doing other things in the day. Then if I can write more later in the day, if feels like icing on the cake.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Just write. Get that book finished. You can't edit and polish what you haven't written.

Tell us about the featured book. (I love your cover.)
Somewhere to Call Home is about Violet Burton, a young woman who finds her home is owned by the bank after her mother passes away. When the banker tries to blackmail her into marrying him to get her home free and clear, she takes one of her mother's friends up on her offer to stay with her and find work in New York City to pay off the mortgage. Thinking all she really wants is to have her family home back, she isn't prepared to enjoy living in the city so much—or to find herself so attracted to her landlady's son, Michael Heaton. But Violet must learn that home is where her heart is.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Prologue
May 1895, Ashland, Virginia

Violet Burton sighed with disappointment as she left the mercantile. How could things have changed so much in such a short time? Only moments ago, on her way to the post office, there'd been a help wanted sign in the store's window and another one in the milliner's shop. Evidently, she wasn't the only one seeking employment in her small hometown, for both positions were filled by the time she got through picking up her mail.

She walked along the main street, her gaze searching the windows of the businesses on each side of the street. When she spotted a sign in the cafĂ© across the way, a flicker of hope nudged her to gather up her skirts to clear them from the dirt road and hurry across. However, just before she reached the door, the sign was yanked right out of the window. Violet's hope sank once more but she entered the establishment anyway.

She walked over to the proprietor who was putting the sign

CALLIE - Sharon Srock - One Free Book or Ebook

Welcome, Sharon. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
I don’t, intentionally, write any of me into my characters. That doesn’t mean you won’t find a little piece of me in all of the women. Callie teaches Sunday school and loves her guacamole, Terri is looking for God’s will in her life and arguing the whole way, Pam is learning lessons in forgiveness. Yep, there I am.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
Dressed up in a Starfleet uniform.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
Believe it or not, I went to bed one night, a normal person, and woke up the next morning determined to write a book. I know, now, where that came from. It was more than a little weird at the time.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
I love a good courtroom drama. Fantasy when it’s well done. By well done, I mean it has to completely draw me into a different world. Mysteries, and Romantic suspense are devoured at my house like chocolate covered cherries.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
I guess I’m a product of our environment. I like being busy. Even on a vacation I have to consciously tell myself to slow down and enjoy the moment. Sanity…I’m a writer, that option took a hike a few years back.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
I like to go for simple. I think my readers will identify with simple.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
I’m going to assume you don’t mean raising terrific daughters.  Really? This book. Not just for the validation or a sense of “I can really do this”. But because I feel like it represents me, finally finding God’s place for me.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
A Unicorn of course. White and flowing and graceful and everyone loves them.

What is your favorite food?
I have two rules when I cook. If it’s sweet add chocolate. If it isn’t sweet add cheese.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
Not believing in myself. I had a lot of good support and prayer partners who wouldn’t let me wiggle out of God’s will for me, even if I wasn’t sure I should go there.

Tell us about the featured book.
Callie’s spirit is broken after a child she was trying to help is murdered by his abusive father. Little Sawyer would still be alive if she’d minded her own business, wouldn’t he? God refuses to allow Callie’s life to be defined by undeserved guilt and blame so he places her in a situation she can’t walk away from. Iris and Samantha Evans need help and Callie is the tool God wants to use. When she steps out in faith and begins working to reunite these girls with the father who abandoned them ten years ago, Callie discovers that God is rescuing her right along with the Evans family.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Callie Stillman dabbed raindrops from her face with a linen napkin as Benton dodged a server with a loaded tray and took his place across from her. She smiled into her husband’s blue eyes and reached across to wipe water from his beard. “We’ll both have pneumonia if we don’t dry off soon.”

Benton took the napkin and finished the job. “I’ve been told the food is very good. A few sniffles should be worth it.”

Callie’s gaze roamed the room. “It’s…” Recognition slammed into her chest, forcing the air from her lungs. The man crossing the room behind her husband nodded and continued to his table. Was that the bailiff? Do you swear to tell the truth… She gulped for breath and fought the familiar darkness that crowded the edges of her vision.

Callie ran a finger around her collar, tugging the neck of the blouse away from skin suddenly dewed with a fine film of sweat. Too hot. She took a sip of water, dismayed at the tremor in her hand as she lifted the glass to her lips. Not here, not tonight. Callie closed her eyes and practiced the breathing techniques she’d learned over the last six months. In through her nose, hold for a few seconds, and out through her mouth. Concentrate only on the current step in the process, the next breath. The tightness in her chest began to fade away. Thank you, Jesus. She raised her water again and held the cold glass to her flushed cheek.

My editor and I, in an attempt to introduce the Women of Valley View to potential readers have put together a free 39 page PDF. Here is the link to that.

LIZZIE AND THE GUERNSEY GANG - April W Gardner - One Free Book

April W Gardner lives in Georgia with her computer nerd Air Force husband, ten year-old bookworm son, and eight year-old art-loving daughter. The Gardners enjoy watching nature shows, visiting national parks, and eating popcorn and chocolate every Friday during family night. April writes her Lizzie stories for God, her precious children, and every other kiddo who loves a good adventure. She is also the author of the Creek Country Saga, an inspirational historical romance series for moms.

What has drawn you to writing for children?
My own kids! They’re both in the middle grade range. I wrote every word with them in mind. Also, I firmly believe we all (no matter our age) learn best through fiction. So, history and Christian content written into fiction is a great way to impact a child’s life

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
The quirkiest thing I’ve ever done—have a panic attack while snorkeling in the Bahamas.
The bravest? Getting back in the water.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
Since I’m dyslexic, elementary school was the pits. I HATED writing, reading, math, you name it. By the end of middle school, I’d “learned” how to learn and was realizing I wasn’t stupid. By high school, I finally got my brain in gear and finished with straight As. My favorite subject? Creative writing. My 11th grade teacher, Ms. Davy, opened my eyes to the love of putting a story together.

This is the second interview I’ve done recently with someone who is dyslexic. Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
I write middle grade fiction, which covers ages 9-12, but I don’t write “down” to kids, so adult enjoy it too.

What other books have you written, whether published or not?
I also write historical romance. I currently have two books published in this genre—Wounded Spirits and Warring Spirits. They’re set in the Southeast in 1816, when that area was the American frontier.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
To stay sane, I write a list of to-dos for each day, keeping them manageable. That’s key—not giving myself too much to do. When I’ve accomplished them all, I consider my day done and I don’t worry about what else needs to be done. It’s very tempting to worry about that huge pile of to-dos, but I do what I can do TODAY and let tomorrow worry about itself. Matt 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of, besides family?
Tough one! Take out the kids and nothing else even comes close. J That being said, tiling half the floor space in my house on arthritic knees was quite an accomplishment. My knees will never be the same, but I did it! LOL

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
If I could be any animal in the world, I’d be a bird. Effortless flight has got to be such a rush!

What is your favorite food?
Rice! Must have something to do with being born in Okinawa, Japan

I love brown rice. Is it hard to break into the children’s market?
Yes! But I was blessed to get into Astraea Press as they were opening their doors to middle grade fiction.

Must have been a God thing. What advice would you give to an author wanting to do that?
Stick with it. And while you’re sticking, continue to improve your craft.

What would you like to tell us about the featured book?
Lizzie and the Guernsey Gang is based on a true story! Not just the setting (Nazi-occupied Guernsey) but the characters. Lizzie is based on the life of Ruth Davies-Miller, my sweet friend. She lived through the occupation as a child and has more stories to share than you have hours to listen!

Book Blurb:

Lizzie Browning loves nothing more than her tiny, island-home of Guernsey, but when German bombs drop on her crystal beach, her peaceful world is shattered. For months, the big war on the continent has been nothing more than stories in the paper, but as the enemy takes over Guernsey, the war rushes to her doorstep. For Lizzie, younger brother Andre, and cousin James, the time to escape is now, and they know just how to do it.

Phillip Seifert, the odd boy from down the street, has all the markings of a genuine Nazi-lover. Lizzie knows better than to trust him, but he somehow manages to weasel his way into James’ good graces. Phillip joins the gang in their audacious escape plan, and Lizzie can do little more than pray he doesn’t get them all shot. But Lizzie soon learns that God doesn’t always answer prayers in the way she expects. He might actually plan for them to live under Nazi rule…forever.

Author Jalana Franklin - A Very Special Surprise Giveaway

A winners list for last week's posts will be posted later today.

Today, I'm introducing you to a very special author friend of mine. I found out about her other creative endeavor when we were at American Christian Fiction Writers national conference in September, and I just had to introduce her to you, my reader friends.

Welcome, Jalana. I know you are a writer, and I can't wait to read one of your books when they are published. Tell us about what you write?
I am a true romantic, and I love history and all things Victorian, so I am currently working on two historical romances. One is based on a true love story, set in 1840, and the other is set in 1884. My heroines are usually a little feisty, and my heroes are true gentlemen who can tame a feisty woman. Both of these stories are set in Tennessee, in small towns that did exist at one time. My friends all tell me that I have a bit of a sense of humor, and that it comes out in my writing. If you’re all about an epic love story, then my writing is for you. I really love to read books that have a salvation message, or at least a Christian message, so I wanted my books to be “paper missionaries” too, with an inspirational message in them, and I love a happy ending! I’ve only been published in devotional books, but I hope to have a published novel one day soon!

Do you have another job besides as an author?
I have a Master’s Degree in Education, and taught in the public school system for fourteen years before I followed my heart to homeschool my own 5 children. This is our third year to homeschool.  I tell people that it’s more of a job than a job!! There are not enough hours in the day for mothers!! I also paint reborn dolls and sell them online.

Where do you live, and tell us about your family?
I live in a VERY small town in southern, middle Tennessee. So small, that we only have two red lights. It’s a very friendly town, and I really enjoy living here, where all of my mother’s large family is. We’re really tight-knit.

My husband and I have five children at home, and one in Heaven. Four are boys,(my princes), and the last two are twin girls, (my princesses). They range in age from seven to fifteen. My oldest son plays bass, my husband plays drums, and I play piano for our church praise team. I also sing and lead worship. We enjoy playing together, and are currently working on a family Christmas album where we all play and sing. I have the most wonderful kids on the planet, and the most wonderful husband. I’m also a baseball mom, and love to be a part of whatever my kids are involved in.

What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?
Oh, that is an easy question!! Definitely Mackinac Island, Michigan. I fell in love with The Grand Hotel on the movie, “Somewhere in Time,” and I’ve wanted to visit since then. The island has no cars, only bicycles, horses, and buggies. Doesn’t that sound romantic? I’m planning a trip there someday, and I’d love to write a historical book set on the island. So, I’m sure I will have to visit—for the sake of research!!

How about a foreign country you hope to visit?
Well, you know my friend, Dorothy, who is also my critique partner, lives in Australia. We talk on a daily basis, and I want to visit Australia more with every conversation!! The seasons are opposite to ours, and when I’m freezing over here in the snow, she is sunbathing on the beach!! I always wanted to go there, even before I met her, but now that I really know someone from there, makes it even more interesting! One day I hope to visit her and visit all of the places that she has told me about, like her beloved Phillip Island (where her story is set!)

I’d love to visit Pompeii as well. I taught World History for five years, and I developed a deep fascination with Pompeii. I really hope to see some of the ruins there some day too.

I fell in love with Australia decades before it was chic to other North Americans, and I have a number of good friends who are Australian authors.

You know that I fell in love with the hand-painted baby doll you brought for the silent auction at the American Christian Fiction Writers conference. Tell us about your dolls?
I’ve always loved to paint, and always been willing to try my hand at just about anything. My daughters saw some reborn dolls at a friend’s house, and decided they wanted one for their birthday. I decided I could paint them myself, and their dolls were the first of many. I found a new hobby, and thought that I was pretty good at it. I tried selling one on ebay, and it was a hit!! My mother helps, and she remakes some of the outfits to “fit.”

Reborn means that the doll has been painted to look  like a real baby. Thus, it is “reborn” from a play baby. It’s a very lengthy process, taking two to three weeks per doll.

There are many blank kits available, and many sculpts from all over the world. I’ve painted preemies, newborns, 3 month olds, 9 month olds, and tiny dolls. I tend to lean towards babies with personality, and I try to bring out that personality when I paint. I use only the best materials so that I can offer a great doll. They are painted in layers, and baked to set the paint. The bodies are soft, and filled with weighted pellets to give them a “real baby feel.” I dress them in real baby clothes, diapers, blankets,  pacifiers, toys, etc, and hand root their hair and eyelashes, strand by strand. Some have curly, some have straight, but they all have personality. I print a birth certificate, and make each one a name bracelet, (and love on them a little,) before they are shipped to their new mommy.

Now let’s reveal the surprise giveaway on the blog today.
Today we are giving away a reborn baby doll, hand-painted by me!! It’s retail value is at least $175.00. Whoever wins can keep it, or give it to someone for Christmas!! I like it well enough to keep it!! It’s a sleeping doll named Sweet Pea. A real cutie!! I’ll also send a CD of our Praise and Worship at church. It has 18 songs, all recorded live. My family plays all of the music, and I’m singing on all of the songs.

BLUE AFRICA - Therese Stenzel - Three Free Books

Welcome back, Therese. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
What a great question! He told me to e-publish my rejected manuscripts so I see a lot of books on Amazon lol! Also, I’ve been asking Him what is beyond being published? How can I fit more ministry into a writing career? I see having books published as means to an end, so I am looking for Him to open doors for me to minister somehow some way. I don’t have an answer yet, but I am excited for His direction.

Tell us a little about your family.
I have been married for 21 years to my best friend, Neal. I have three kids Jonathan 17, Benjamin 16, Olivia 12. With my son being a senior I’m seeing the end of three kids at home sniff, sniff, but I know that God always has plans to give me a “future and a hope” for each season.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
I can’t read a book without correcting a writers mistakes—such an annoying habit I’ve picked up! I appreciate good writing and can “see” when an author has spent time honing their craft.

What are you working on right now?
I am working on book three in the British Missives series titled, The Bride of Thistleloch Castle, set in Scotland. It’s about an English girl whose father loses her hand in game of cards to a Scottish man…

What outside interests do you have?
Reading, of course. Right now I’m reading the British classic Birdsong. I love to read old, obscure British books, and classic authors like Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters—sigh I was born in the wrong country and in the wrong era lol! I also watch and collect British period movies

How do you choose your settings for each book?
The settings just come to me. I believe it is the Holy Spirit who gives me the books, so I’ll get a character, and a setting stuck in my head and then little by little a story will unfold. Then I start writing to see where it will go. I never know the ending when I begin.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
Jane Austen. First of all, I could listen to a British person speaking all day, and someone who lived years ago would have that accent, and would use delightful words you only hear in period movies. I also think she had a wicked sense of humor so she’s probably a lot of fun.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
That it is more of a spiritual journey than a physical one. That God’s plans are higher, better, and sometimes include curves like a two year hiatus from writing because of back pain, a plunge into the fun and fascinating world of indie publishing—not what I would have planned, but He is in control J

Four of the people I’ve mentored have chosen to Indie publish. What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
That food is my idol—oops that’s a lesson for another blog.  He is teaching me that trusting Him is like walking out onto an old rope and wooden bridge that looks like I might fall thru the slats at any minute, but He is telling me it’s going to be ok and to trust Him. And though I’ve walked with him for 37 years, I still don’t fully understand what it means to trust Him.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
This scripture says it best; Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that your will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.  It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Col 3:23-24 NIV

Blue Africa is a historical romance set in British East Africa, 1897. Miss Cassandra Littlemen is determined to become England’s first female entomologist, but the English scientific community and her father do not approve of female scientists. Intent on fulfilling her lifelong dream of capturing rare butterflies, she sneaks onto a royally-sponsored African expedition posing as her brother. Expecting to find the doddering Mr. John Keep in charge, she is dismayed to discover his bachelor son, Sir William Keep, in his place. Can her disguise fool this exceptional scientist? William Keep is hiding a secret—Queen Victoria has recently arranged a betrothal between her granddaughter and the newly knighted William, sending him to Africa on a scientific expedition to prove his worth to the royal family. Sir William is anxious to achieve great findings like his famous father. But he must get this headstrong Miss Littlemen back to England before the Queen finds out. But can he do it before he loses his heart?

Please give us the first page of the book.
British East Africa, (Kenya) July 1895
Cassandra Littlemen paused on the dock and surveyed the bustling, African port. She squinted through the bright July sunshine and the cool blue water around her. With no binding corset, no stiff crinoline to bind her, her white shirt, and tweed trousers felt blissfully airy. She shifted her masculine boots and closed her eyes. The warmth of the sultry sun consumed her. A swell of joy rose in her throat.

After ten days of travel, Africa at last.

The sound of Swahili, smooth like a river, rang directly behind her. She clutched her bulky satchel and spun around.

Jambo.” A dark-skinned man greeted her with a bow. “I am Nolo, Mr. Keep’s servant, and you are...” he paused and raised an eyebrow, “...Sir Edmond Littlemen?”

Cassandra forced her hand to remain steady as she handed the man her documents. Two weeks aboard the steamer from France had given her time to practice being a male, but would he see through her disguise? She had determined not to lie about her identity, but rather to allow others to make their own scientific deductions regarding her masculine appearance. “My father couldn’t come. I’m...the other Littlemen.”

Nolo stood slightly taller than she, dressed in a white sari and red turban. The wise expression on his dark face reminded her of a strict nanny. His bony features betrayed no age as he scanned her papers. “Ah, you are Benjamin Littlemen.”

A flood of mortifying heat flooded her cheeks. This is for you, Benjamin. The vision of her younger brother, convalescing in the south of France rose in her mind. Tears burned in her exhausted eyes.

You must go Cassandra, for us, for all that we had planned. You will go to British East Africa and write to me every glorious detail of the butterflies of Africa.

A man shouted behind her. She whirled around, and searched the length of the pier. In the glow of the late afternoon sun, the dinghy that had brought her ashore pulled away.

“Plum pudding. My things.” She darted toward the end of the dock. “Wait!”

“Ngoja!” Nolo shouted behind her.

She ran down the long wharf. “There are important boxes on that boat.”

As she reached the edge, her boots skittered to a stop. The rickety pier wobbled. She gasped as the wooden slats near her feet separated and fell with a plop into the murky inlet.

Flee.

Pedaling backwards, she waved her arms to maintain balance. But the faster she retreated, the faster the sound of splashing wood rang around her.

Someone grabbed her belt and yanked her back toward a patch of dirt in front of the dock.

“Please, Mr. Littlemen. All will be well.” Nolo released his grip.

Now on land, she bent over, rested her hands on her knees, to catch her breath. “My things...”

“The boatmen always carry people separately from their luggage. Your effects will be delivered to the camp by morning.”

She straightened her posture. “I apologize for my—” An abrupt creak shot through the air.

She stared open-mouthed as the pier tilted to one side, and slid, with a deafening crunch, into the inlet.

STORM SONG - Rich Bullock - One Free Ebook

Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I believe there is only one thing you need to know about fiction in any genre. Got your attention? Here it is: It’s the character’s story; you’re just writing it down.

As I get to know the people, their story unfolds. Somehow, it always involves a woman, danger, mystery, and suspense.

And the characters must be unique from the onset. No one wants to read a book about a clerk in a drug store…boring! …unless she is also a martial arts expert, drives an unreliable 1975 Super Beetle with a leaky soft top, and whose grandmother packs a 9 mill to the supermarket. Now things get interesting!

And I want the stories to end with an awakening dependence on faith, and an expectation of romance.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
Getting married to my wife, Sheryl (41 years ago on a Friday the 13th), was the happiest event. All good things have come from our partnership and commitment. But honestly, I was kind of out of it during the whole ceremony/reception thing. So I wouldn’t necessarily call it the happiest day! Good thing we had pictures.

Wow! I was born on a Friday the 13th. How has being published changed your life?
Recently, I was invited to teach at a creative writing class at a junior college. Being published gives me the credentials to teach others some of the great things I’ve learned from conferences and workshops. What a blast! I can’t wait to do more.

Another great thing is handing out a card with my book cover on the front and a code for a free download on the back. I did that a few days ago to my dermatologist, and again today at SuperCuts to the girl who cut my hair. Who knows what will come from that?

What are you reading right now?
I just finished a YA novel, Fathom, by Merrie Destefano—an intriguing and beautiful story that deserves a ton of praise. Couldn’t put it down, and didn’t want it to end. Well-written YA stories teach me how to get deep into the character’s head, and deal with a world full of conflict, danger, betrayal, and love—all from a young person’s position of limited power. I want to write like that.

What is your current work in progress?
DESPERATION FALLS: Lena Blaylock is the “sexy” carpenter on the cable TV home improvement show, Nail It!...until her world is destroyed in seconds one night as she celebrates her six-month wedding anniversary with her assistant district attorney husband. A year later, she is healed and beginning a new life at Storm Lake, California, as the owner of the dilapidated Desperation Falls Fishing Cabins, when an ex-lawman, a teenage runaway girl, and a dead body, turn everything upside down. Fixing up the cabins is the easy part.

I love your heroine’s name. ;-) What would be your dream vacation?
Being able to go on vacation and write at the same time, but I can never do it. If we’re in someplace new, I always want to make the most of the time and see the sights. No writing gets done. Sigh.

My favorite vacations are to beautiful places. This summer we went to Vancouver Island in Canada, then stopped at Forks, Washington, (home of Twilight). Forks wasn’t much, but Lake Crescent and the lodge were fabulous. I’d like to stay there someday.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I believe settings are very important to stories, so I try to create someplace where I want to live or visit. Both Perilous Cove and nearby Storm Lake are fictional composites of the best of areas I know along the California coast.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
The most scintillating conversations I’ve ever had have been with fellow writers. Therefore, I think I’d pick Dean Koontz. The guy is funny, loves dogs, and has the strangest writing method with the most amazing outcomes. I want to know how his characters take shape; how he can write half a page of narrative without using “was” one time; how he contrasts such evil against good. Four or five hours wouldn’t be nearly enough time.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
I have a 1932 Ford pickup that I hope to have back up and running by next summer. It’s been in my family since about 1939, and I learned to drive in it. I also love to tinker and do home projects, and I have the tools and tool chests to prove it. That’s why Lena Blaylock is close to my heart (see question #5).

In the late 1960s, we owned a 1937 International pickup. I loved driving that. What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
No question, it’s figuring out what the story is. Characters are the easier part for me. I have trouble deciding what the external intrusion is that disrupts their lives. My overactive imagination spins the story in all directions, and trying to keep it on track and have it make sense is my biggest challenge. Can you tell I’m a seat-of-the-pants writer?

I’ve just begun using Scrivener, and I think the corkboard view is helping me visualize the story flow better than having one large manuscript. Now, if I could just figure out who the bad guy is…

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Learn the craft. You’ve gotta do it. Conferences and workshops are vital. New writers—and I was no exception—don’t realize how much there is to learn. A few (very few) have a lot of natural talent. The rest of us have to learn. Once you are comfortable with your writing, sign up for a mentoring group at a conference. This is the best way to test your story and your skill, and receive feedback from others. It’s a little scary, but extremely valuable.

Tell us about the featured book.
American Rayne Evans is on the verge of making it big in Europe’s competitive symphonic metal music scene, when a deranged fan attacks her band at their biggest concert.

She’s forced to hide while she heals in the only safe place: Storm Lake, California, where no one would know to look. But the picturesque lake holds Rayne’s deepest secret, and a different kind of danger from a man she thought she’d never see again. If she’s not careful, she could lose her band, her career, and her life.

Ben Conner made his choice years ago, and it hadn’t been to chase after Rayne Evans. It took years, but he’s recovered from her betrayal. Now she’s come to him for help, and he can’t turn her away. But helping her could tear holes in the life he’s built for a young boy and for himself.

Storm Song

“Ten minutes, Miss Van Onweer,” the stage manager’s voice sounded outside the dressing room door.

“Thank you.” Regen van Onweer tilted a bottled water to her lips, but pulled it away without drinking. She’d be running to the bathroom between every song.

The woman staring back in the mirror looked composed, confident. “Pretense, that’s what counts,” Aunt Ruth had always told her. But that had been years ago in Nebraska before Regen van Onweer existed, not here in Rotterdam.

Her cell phone vibrated an excited dance on the dressing table. Unknown Caller ID. Only a few people had her new number. Her hand trembled as she pushed the answer button.

“Hello?”

A voice whispered, “Did you get my giiift?”

Regen’s eyes cut to the trash bin and the hideous flower as she jabbed the disconnect button. How had he gotten this number?

The door clicked, opened inward, and Regen shot to her feet, sending the cell phone to the hard tile floor where it split into its component pieces. They spun to a stop at the feet of the woman in the doorway—Lorna Nairne, her costume and hair expert. Lorna’s smile faded at Regen’s shuddering breath. Bending down, Lorna scooped up the battery, cover, and phone, while Regen worked air into frozen lungs.

“You okay, Ree girl? You look a little spooked.” Lorna’s accent rolled off her tongue like the Jamaican native she was, though Regen had heard her speak flawless King’s English when it benefited her. Lorna deposited the electronic parts into Regen’s cupped hands.

Regen nodded her response. She swiveled toward the dressing table, fingers trembling as she inserted the battery and snapped on its cover. “I’m just nervous, you know.” Her voice sounded as phony as a B-movie actress. Pretense wasn’t up to par. With battery in place, the phone buzzed happily, rebooting and searching for the cellular network, readying itself for the next call. Regen held her breath until the display went dark

Lorna laughed in lilting tones, moved behind Regen, and watched in the mirror as she tugged Regen’s black wig right and left until satisfied. She gave Regen a calculated once-over in the glass, then nodded.

“Yes, dis is a big night, Regen van Onweer, but you are ready.” She massaged Regen’s shoulders. “You may not think it too much right now, but you are.”

Regen closed her eyes under Lorna’s kneading fingers. The Dutch police still had no leads on the caller, but security at the Ahoy Rotterdam had been beefed up for tonight’s concert. There was even an Interpol inspector onsite. He’d checked in with her earlier.

Lorna had Regen stand and pirouette. The wide, multilayered Victorian skirt dusted the floor on the sides and back, but had a front cutaway to show off black leather knee boots that each sported a dozen silver buckles.

The cell phone buzzed and Regen’s eyes jerked toward the lighted display. A text message from Unknown Sender.

Save your last breath for me.

Sounds ominous! I have to download that one. How can readers find you on the Internet?
