Welcome back, Ace. Why did you become an
author?
I actually sold my first book in 1982, so, as hard as it is
for me to believe, I have been doing this for 31 years now.
If you weren’t an
author, what would be your dream job?
I love kids, I love basketball, so I think coaching
basketball at a small college or, in a similar vein, perhaps teaching writing
to college kids.
If you could have
lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?
I have mixed emotions on this. I love the style of the
mid-1930s. The clothes, the cars and even the Art-Deco building designs
resonate deeply with me. I also love the movies from that period. But I would
not want to go back to a segregated world where all people were not given equal
chances. I know I’d miss air conditioning too. So I guess I am just made for
the time I live in.
What place in the United States
have you not visited that you would like to?
I’ve been everywhere except the Northwest. So I would enjoy
seeing Washington and Oregon . I love rain, trees, and mountain
views, so I believe I would love it.
How about a foreign
country you hope to visit?
I love Canada ,
I think I could be a Canadian without much effort, but I’ve never taken the
train across the western half of the country and never been to see the Pacific
from British Columbia .
I have a lot of
writing friends in Canada .
I’d love to visit all of them. What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?
We have a home group on Sunday night where between 30-50
college kids come to our house eat, have a devotional, and pray. I find this
generation of kids so much more service oriented that the generation I grew up
in. So I think the lesson is we have a new generation of Christians who will
teach me great lessons about living out Matthew 25:35-40.
Tell us about the
featured book.
It is the second episode in the series called In The
President’s Service. It picks up where the last book left off and pushes the
lead character, Helen Meeker, into even deeper mystery and intrigue. It is
roller coaster ride of adventure, romance, and suspense, and it’s called …The
Dark Pool. This is a fun series with a lot of neat characters. I just
finished the 4th episode today.
Please give us the
first page of the book.

Fredrick Bauer’s arms moved in piston-like fashion as he
raced across an open field. Though he was tall and ruggedly built, his rapidly
beating heart rumbled like a kettledrum and his lungs felt as though they were
being yanked through his chest. The bitter-cold March wind tore into his face,
causing his cheekbones to all but cut through his skin. Yet, in spite of his
mind pleading with him to stop, he kept going. He had to run. He had no choice.
It was either get away or die.
Glancing over his left shoulder into the night, he noted
four figures with flashlights moving toward him. Were they getting closer? He
thought so, but perhaps fatigue was just playing games with him. After all,
he’d been sprinting for at least a mile.
His need to flee was almost overruled by a longing to slow
down—maybe even give up. But he couldn’t do that. Death was better than going
back into the hole. So he kept his legs moving across the flat prairie
landscape. Even if his heart burst and he instantly fell dead, that would be
better than the fate that awaited him back there.
Up ahead, he saw headlights moving from left to right. A
highway! If he could get to it, maybe someone would pick him up. Then the
monsters chasing him couldn’t drag him back and continue beating him or filling
his body with more of the mind-numbing drugs.
