LONDONDERRY DREAMING - Christine Lindsay - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, Christine. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
At the moment I am letting readers know about Londonderry Dreaming, my first strictly romance novel with Pelican Books. But also this year will be the release of Veiled at Midnight Book 3 in my historical series, Twilight of the British Raj. WhiteFire Publishing has also offered me the contract to write my non-fiction account of my experience as a birthmom—a woman who relinquishes her child to adoption—and my reunion with my birthdaughter 20 years later. Sometimes I get a little breathless thinking about it all.

Tell us a little about your family.
Like a lot of families these days, mine is a bit complex. My husband and I have three grown children and three grandsons. But we also have a wonderful relationship with my birthdaughter, Sarah. It’s so exciting right now. Sarah is 35 and has just had her first child, a little boy. So now I have 4 grandsons. It broke my heart to give Sarah up as a baby, but it was best for her at the time, since I was not married. I didn’t meet my dear husband until a year after I gave Sarah up. But God is so good. These days Sarah and I have a warm relationship as birthmom and birthdaughter. The best way I can describe it, it’s a bit like favorite aunt and favorite niece.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
Writing is such time-consuming work, so that I rarely get to read just for fun. I’m either doing research for my novels, or reading for review. Not much opportunity to just kick back in a hammock and fall asleep with a good book in my hands.

What are you working on right now?
Veiled at Midnight, Book 3 of my historical series set in exotic India. The hero and heroine in this book were just children in the first book, Shadowed in Silk. Now Cam and Dassah are grown, and in love. However, there is a lot against this couple being together. Cam is an English officer in the British army, and Dassah is a beautiful young Indian woman. As a mixed-race couple in 1947, they have much to keep them apart. Add to that, Cam’s struggle with alcoholism, misunderstandings, and treachery around them as Indian is about to be brutally parted in two. This is an explosive era, the end of British Colonialism. The historical figure of Lord Louis Mountbatten features in this story as the last Viceroy to India. Talk about pomp!

What outside interests do you have?
I love to garden with my mother who lives with us. And I love to get away in the little travel trailer with my husband. Get outdoors and enjoy God’s masterpiece.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
So far those settings have chosen me. My favorite books were written by the great MM Kaye, who wrote massive epics full of romance, adventure, and action set in Colonial India. I wanted to write books similar to that but from a Christian point of view. As for Londonderry Dreaming, the setting of Northern Ireland was too good to pass up. I was born in Northern Ireland, and I simply had to write this story when Pelican put out the submission call for their Passport to Romance line, and one of the international settings was Londonderry

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
I would like to meet with Pandita Ramabai, the great Indian Christian woman who did so much for suffering women and children in India. Ramabai died in 1922 but her mission is still in existence today. It’s funny, I think she did more even than Mother Theresa, but she remains fairly unknown in the US. I would be so intimidated to meet this wonderful woman, but she is the inspiration behind the entire series Twilight of the British Raj.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
That it would take me, drain me, take 99% of any leisure time I had remaining in my day, but yet be the most exciting way the Lord has used me to share His message of salvation. I’m tired, but it’s worth it, if my stories convey to readers how wonderful the Lord is.

I’ve only read the first book in the Twilight of the British Raj series, and you accomplished your goal in that one. What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
To not run ahead of Him, but remain in step with Him. The only way to do that is spend time in prayer and listen.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
Realize it will cost you a great deal—in money perhaps, but mostly in time, but you need to learn how to write. Perseverance is your friend—so keep at it. Write what you are passionate about.

Tell us about the featured book.
In Londonderry Dreaming, Naomi Boyd and Keith Wilson are two American people of Irish ancestry. She is an acclaimed New York artist and he’s a music therapist. Years before, they met in Ireland and fell in love, but Naomi’s grandfather separated them.

There is some secret root of bitterness between Ruth and Keith’s grandparents that has kept Naomi and Keith apart, until both sets of grandparents have passed on. Back in Ireland, a mysterious painting in the attic of Keith’s grandparents’ house brings all those old questions up. The interesting thing about Keith and Naomi is they are more comfortable with the unspoken languages of art and music and must learn to verbally share their hurts and true feelings.

This book is set against the majestic coastline of Northern Ireland.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Keith couldn’t get the old song about marrying a girl like the one Dad married out of his head as he dusted the heavy pewter frame of his grandparents’ wedding photo. His Granda used to sing that song all the time. Keith held the picture up to catch Londonderry’s wintry light streaming through the parlor window, his gaze moving from his grandfather’s face to his grandmother’s. A girl just like ... He cleared the roughness from his voice. Actually, someone like the girl that married his grandfather was more what he was praying for in a wife.

Yeah, his sweet Irish Gran, no woman could even come close to the gal she used to be. The way she used to bang the piano keys when the family this side of the ocean had a good old knees up party with plenty of singing and dancing. But her laughing eyes could turn to scolding as quick as a storm coming off the Irish Sea. And then those eyes melted within moments afterward with a hug, and most likely a chocolate biscuit. Dear Lord, I’m going to miss her and that wild sense of humor she had, not to mention her cooking.

The doorbell rang. Were his cousins back already with more boxes? Garrick and Sandra had left only twenty minutes ago, but they needed a load more containers if he was to ever get started on emptying this house.

He placed the photograph into the box of items he would take back to the States. It would sit in a place of honor on his piano at home in Albany. As for the rest ...

What a royal mess he and his Irish cousins had made of the first floor of this small, red-brick row house. To be fair he’d only just started, but there were two floors and then the attic. Thanks, Gran, for asking me to take care of this for you—me of all people. Now if all this stuff were musical gear he’d know what to do, but what was he to do with his grandmother’s dainty things? She’d been so insistent though, and he could never refuse her anything. She also knew he’d take any opportunity to fly over to Ireland.

FULFILLING THE FEASTS OF ISRAEL - Velda Stearns - One Free Book

Readers, I’ve know Velda for over 30 years, and we’re really good friends. The subject matter in this nonfiction book is dear to her heart. She’s studied it for a long time.

Welcome, Velda. What would you like for our readers to know about you personally?
I was born on a farm, without electricity and running water, in Indian Territory at the beginning of WWII. I had a love for learning at an early age. I usually read a book after school each evening before I went to bed. I graduated from high school at the age of sixteen and college at the age of twenty. I was the first person in my family to attend college.

I taught high school for a while before I was married. In my early thirties, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Because of fatigue, I starting writing and teaching piano.

Tell us about your family.
Bob and I have four children and twelve grandchildren. All of our children are Christians. We live in north Texas.

Have you written other nonfiction books?
I have written a series of 12 supplemental books for classroom teachers.

Do you have any other books in the works right now?
I am currently writing a book entitled From Antiquity to Eternity. It starts with prophecies in Genesis and goes to prophecies in Revelation.

What kinds of hobbies and leisure activities do you enjoy?
I am an avid reader and researcher and play the piano.

Why did you write the featured book?
I wrote Fulfilling the Feasts of Israel because it reveals God’s Plan of Salvation in the Old Testament. Jewish people have been celebrating these seven years for thousands of years, unaware that Yeshua fulfilled the first four feasts and will fulfill the final three feasts when He returns to earth a second time. Christians rarely celebrate the feasts and are unaware of their significance.

What do you want the reader to take away from the book?
I want people who read my book to understand that Christ came to earth to fulfill all the laws and prophets.

Christ fulfilled the Feast of Passover when He died on the cross for our sins.
Christ fulfilled the Feast of Unleavened Bread with his burial.
Christ fulfilled the Feasts of First Firsts when he rose from the dead to live eternally.
Christ fulfilled the Feast of Weeks when He sent the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost.
Christ will fulfill the Feast of Trumpets when He returns to earth a second time.
Christ will fulfill Yom Kippur when the Jewish people accept Yeshua as their Messiah.
Christ will fulfill the Feast of Tabernacles when He establishes His kingdom on earth and tabernacles with man for 1,000 years.

Where on the Internet can the readers find you?
You can contact me at veldastearns@sbcglobal.net.

CRITICAL CONDITION - Richard L Mabry, MD - Two Free Books, Plus Kindle HDX

Readers, I've known Richard Mabry for over ten years. He's a good friend and a very good author of medical suspense books. When his books arrive, they go to the top of both my to-be-read list and my husband's to-be-read list. Whoever reaches the end of their current book gets to read it first. They are always wonderful medical suspense novels.

I have loved every one of his novels, and Critical Condition is, of course, the best one yet.

Richard’s books have strong, well-developed characters with flaws. And his medical details are authentic. I have a hard time putting his books down, and Critical Condition is no exception. A real page-turner in every sense of the word.

BIO: A retired physician, Dr. Richard Mabry is the author of four critically acclaimed novels of medical suspense. His previous works have been finalists for the Carol Award and Romantic Times Reader's Choice Award, and have won the Selah Award. He is a past Vice-President of American Christian Fiction Writers and a member of the International Thriller Writers. He and his wife live in North Texas.

Welcome back, Richard. Why did you become an author?
When I retired from thirty-six years in medicine, I had no idea of writing novels. I’d just had my first non-fiction book published: The Tender Scar: Life After The Death Of A Spouse. While I was attempting to learn about publishing and writing, I received encouragement from authors like James Scott Bell and Alton Gansky so I decided to try my hand at writing medical suspense. After four years, four books, and forty rejections, I got my first contract. Critical Condition, which released on April 15, is my seventh published novel. I guess God didn’t want me playing that much golf during retirement.

If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?
Assuming I could turn back the clock and had the talent, I’d be a professional baseball player. I’ve always loved the game—I’ve played it and coached it, and can think of nothing I’d enjoy more. At least until the first hot line drive came back through the pitcher’s mound.

Yeah, there have been several pitchers injured that way, a couple of them this year. If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?
I’d prefer to go forward—maybe fifty years or more—to see how technology and the inventions that make our everyday life easier have progressed in that time.

You’re the first author I’ve interviewed that said they’d go forward, but I like that answer. What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?
Although I’ve been fortunate enough to see a lot of our country, I’ve never made it to Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park, and I’ve only seen the Grand Canyon from the air. It would be nice to mark those off my bucket list.

How about a foreign country you hope to visit?
I’ve been to Great Britain and Scotland, but never Ireland. Since I’m of Irish descent (one-quarter, if you’re curious), I’ve always wanted to go there.

I’m one quarter Irish, too. I’d love to go there. What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?
He’s taught me the same one over and over: God always answers prayers. Sometimes the answer is “yes,” sometimes “no,” but frequently it’s “not yet.” I’ve learned to accept that.

Tell us about the featured book.
Critical Condition is my seventh published novel of medical suspense, all of them freestanding (not a series). Here’s the back cover copy.

It was supposed to be a quiet dinner party with her colleagues, not the scene of a murder. But the shooting of a stranger on her front lawn is only the first in a string of events that have Dr. Shannon Frasier's life teetering on the edge of chaos: She's unable to make the deeper commitment her boyfriend deserves. Her sister shows up at Shannon's home needing a place to stay, but with no promise she'll stay clean and sober. And her father is diagnosed with cancer.

Then Shannon's life stops teetering and plunges into the abyss. Because the person behind the guttural voice on the phone wants to know what the stranger said before he died. And he won't stop until Shannon tells him what he wants to know—even if she doesn't have it.

He's coming for her. She's not sure the police on the case can be trusted. And her only hope of escape—for herself and those she loves—is to overcome her buried past.

Please give us the first page of the book for my readers.
Dr. Shannon Frasier looked around her and smiled. She was surrounded by some of her favorite people, she wasn’t on call, and she had a long holiday weekend ahead of her. Things couldn’t be better.

Three people sat with Shannon at her dining room table tonight. On her right was the man who referred to himself as her “almost-fiancé,” pathologist Dr. Mark Gilbert. She knew that given the opportunity, Mark would remove the “almost” from that designation. Shannon didn’t fully understand the barriers that held her back from that decision, but tonight wasn’t the time to examine them.

Across the table from Shannon sat Dr. Le Duan (Lee) Kai. Yesterday was June 30, the last day of the academic year and the final day of Lee’s residency. He was about to enter private practice, and although she knew he would do well in that environment, Shannon hoped one day Lee would join her on the faculty of the Department of Surgery at Southwestern Medical School, working, as she did, to prepare other doctors for the specialty of surgery.

Beside Lee sat his diminutive wife, Ann. An audiologist, Ann worked at the medical center, but that could change, since the couple made no secret of their desire to start a family once Lee’s practice was well established. Shannon envied them that.

Shannon raised her glass. “I think we should toast—”

A noise from outside—three flat cracks—made her pause. “Did you hear that?” Shannon asked. “Is someone getting an early start on the July Fourth weekend?”

“I guess it could have been firecrackers,” Lee said.

“Maybe it was a car backfiring,” Mark offered.

“Not three in a row. Besides,” Lee said, “that’s rare now that fuel-injected engines have largely replaced those with carburetors.”

Shannon pushed back her chair and dropped her napkin on the table. “While you guys discuss advances in the internal combustion engine, I’m going to look outside and see what’s going on.”

She turned on the porch light and opened her front door. Warm July air rushed in, but nothing caught Shannon’s eye. The porch was empty. No cars moved in the street outside her house. Then she saw it on the lawn—a crumpled mass, like a pile of old clothes. She jumped, startled, when the clothes moved, and she could discern a hand clawing at the dirt. A faint cry, like that of a wounded animal, reached her ears.

BLOOD BROTHER - Ace Collins - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, Ace. As an author, I know it takes a lot of people to birth each book. Who were the people involved in the birthing of this book, and what were their contributions?
That is an interesting question. I guess it starts with an editor, telling my editor, Joyce Hart, that she wanted to do novel with an object rather than a person carrying the plot. That is when I came up with the idea for The Yellow Packard.  I needed a unique physical trait for a particular clue in that book and we have a friend whose dimples are above her cheeks rather than below them, so Alison played in at that time. When Elk Lake was looking for a story that could be told in a serial format, they looked at the lead character in The Yellow Packard, thus it all came together for the series we called In The President’s Service. Now the fans are getting involved giving me insights into the direction they want the series to go. So it really is a team venture.

If you teach or speak. What’s coming up on your calendar?
Right now I am too busy to do much of either. I will be making some appearances in New York in May and Las Vegas in July for an Abingdon release and will continue to so some guest lecture in a few classes at a local university.

If you had to completely start over in another place, where would you move, and why?
I love the mountains and history, so the Smokey Mountains would be a nice place to set up shop. I also have always had a love affair with New England.

If you could only tell aspiring novelists one thing, what would it be?
The business is changing rapidly; it is nothing like it was thirty years ago. While there will always be a place for storytelling, I think they way it is delivered will change. So look for publishers who seem to be in touch with the times and ready to do things in new ways.

You’ve been asked to be in charge of a celebrity cruise. Who would you ask to take part, and why? (AS in what program, singers, etc. [it doesn’t have to be writing related])
My wife would want me to have an NCIS cruise. She loves both of those shows. I would likely pick an early TV cruise. I would enjoy talking to those who put the industry on the map in the 50s and 60s, especially the writers, and get a feel for what it was like when TV was producing 39 new shows a year. The breakneck pace and the fact the template had not really be set, much have made that time period one of the most creative ever.

Tell us about the featured book,
After an assassin’s bullet stops Helen Meeker dead in tracks, her friends must find the man who fired the shot. From the streets of Washington D.C. to the stockyards in Chicago, with a side trip to the heart of Texas, danger and intrigue dog a secret government team as Helen hovers between life and death. Will an enemy’s blood offer a second chance at life and the key to finding out what a mysterious tall man really wants? Old friends unite with new characters in this exciting episode of In The President’s Service.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Washington, D.C.

The music blaring from the Packard’s radio speaker so loud Alison didn’t hear the gunshot. Thus, the young woman was completely baffled when her sister suddenly paused just in front of the car and then slowly dropped out of view. Still, the pained and perplexed expression etched on Helen’s face just before she had fallen spoke volumes. Something was horrible wrong.

Bolting upright, Alison pulled up the door’s handle and quickly stepped out of the yellow sedan. Her black pumps barely touched the rubber-ribbed running board as she rushed around the passenger side front fender to spy her sister, awkwardly sprawled on the sidewalk, her right hand still grasping the Packard’s massive bumper as blood stained her jacket and blouse and began to puddle on the sidewalk.

“Helen,” Alison screamed as she fell to her knees and gently placed her palm against her sister’s face. “What happened?”

            There was no response.

Looking down to the wound, Alison momentarily froze. After taking a deep breath to steady her nerves and slow her heart, Alison pushed her hand into her sister’s side. She held it there, the rushing blood’s wet warmth causing a chill to race down her spine.

            “Oh Helen,” she sighed.

ONE CHOICE - Ginger Solomon - One Free PDF Copy of the Book

Welcome, Ginger. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
They always tell writers to write what they know, so I do. I know me. A lot of me is sprinkled into my characters, especially my love of flowers, roses in particular. I also include a lot of my family’s characteristics. There are nine of us, so I have a lot to work with.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
Wow… this took a great deal of thought. I’m not a particularly quirky person.

When I was a teenager, I took a temporary job as the body inside a full-sized animal costume. We went to a local fair. I think it was in September. I remember it was super-hot inside the costume. We were only allowed to stay in them for thirty minutes at a time. See, told you. I’m not a quirky person.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
I’ve liked to write since I was a child. Sappy, awful poetry was my choice back then. I started writing novel-length fiction about five years ago. I discovered I was a writer when I requested a friend read one of my manuscripts, and she actually liked it.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
I really like reading romance of all kinds—Amish, fantasy, historical, contemporary, etc. I also enjoy supernatural fiction, and some sci-fi. These last two have to have a really compelling story line for me to finish them.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
Sanity? What’s sanity? I lost that many moons ago. No, really, I did. I think it was along about the time my fourth or fifth child was born. LOL

In reality, I’m not much of a runner. I’m a home-body. If I have to go out, I try to shove as many errands as possible into the one outing, and I make sure it’s a day I can remain patient.

In recent years, since my children don’t need my undivided attention, I make sure I treat myself to a day alone, usually spent writing, at least once a month. I recharge in private.

My children are grown and married, and I have grandchildren and great grandchildren, but I have all the privacy I need when I’m writing. How do you choose your characters’ names?
Sometimes the characters tell me their names, but just as often I have to do a search on the internet. I usually start with names that have a certain meaning and go from there.

My current heroine’s name is made up. Her father was of Scotch/Irish descent, so I started with Gaelic names. The name Cari means love. Her mother was of Turkish descent, and they live in the area around the middle-east, so I wanted the name to reflect that culture a little. I didn’t want Cari to be pronounced with an /a/ sound, so I added the “h” to make it more of the /ah/ sound. Thus the name Cahri was born. Josiah named himself.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
I’ve homeschooled my children since the beginning of their schooling career. Sometimes I wondered if I was doing all that I could to prepare them for the future. A few years ago, my second son graduated from high school and was offered a full scholarship to a local university. I was proud of my son, and proud that I had indeed done a good job.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
A horse. I have always loved horses. They are such majestic, athletic animals. I could sit and watch a well-trained horse for hours—or even a wild one. They look so happy as they run with their tails extended and their manes flowing behind them.

What is your favorite food?
I’m not sure I have a favorite food. There are so many that I enjoy. I guess if I have to choose I’d say New England Clam Chowder. It’s my go to comfort food—warm and creamy goodness.

My husband loves New England Clam Chowder. What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
My greatest roadblock is putting myself out there for rejection. I’m not sure I’ve overcome it fully, yet, but it’s getting a little easier. I just have to remember that what I write is not who I am, and the rejection is not aimed at me but at the words on the page.

Tell us about the featured book.
Cahri Michaels is American by birth, but Belikarian by choice. Being selected to participate in the Bridal March forces her to give up the independent life she’s created for herself. She’s not ready to be anyone’s wife, much less to a man she doesn’t know.

Prince Josiah Vallis despises the centuries old tradition—the Bridal March—that is forcing him to choose a wife from fifty women. Why does it matter that he’s twenty-five and still single?

When Cahri and Josiah meet, sparks fly. Will it ignite a godly love that can see them through or will they be burned, never to be the same?

Please give us the first page of the book.
Prologue
Proverbs 31:10 “Who can find a virtuous and capable wife?”
Kral Sarayi, The King’s Palace
South Belikara
March 2011

“Father, must I do this?” Josiah Vallis stood rigid, feet spread in a soldier’s stance, in front of his father’s large, antique oak desk. His hands fisted behind his back as his mind reeled with the humiliation of having to find a wife in this manner.
He had tried, but every woman he'd met, both on his own and those his father had arranged, were money-hungry, power-hungry, unattractive, or all three. The one woman he thought perfect for him had betrayed him. She’d had him fooled, and now he doubted his own judgment when it came to the fairer sex.

He didn't want a wife just to produce heirs and to hang on his arm like a showpiece. His ideal mate would be much like his mother—a woman who could love him for who God intended him to be, not for his family name and position. His desired wife would be kind and considerate, would care for others more than herself, would be giving, loving, and attractive. Most important to him, and even harder to find, was for his wife to have a personal relationship with God.

He gazed around his father’s immense office. All the furnishings, made of quality materials, were fit for a king. One day it would be his, though he’d never wanted it. As the remaining male heir, he had no choice. He peered back at the man behind the desk.

His father's eyes, a shade lighter than his own dark brown, moved away from the computer screen with a spark of irritation. He leaned back in the chair. “Yes, Josiah.

VOW UNBROKEN - Caryl McAdoo - One Free Book

My review: Caryl McAdoo is a new voice in historical Christian fiction. This book is her debut novel. I was eager to read it, so it went right to the top of my to-be-read pile when it arrived. Of course, I love reading books set in historical Texas. Her voice is unique, and I fell in love with the characters from the very first page. They pulled me into their lives and kept me there through the whole interesting storyline. I found the setting authentic, and Caryl kept me turning pages. When I turned the last one, the characters stayed with me for awhile. I know you’ll love this book as well as I did.

Welcome, Caryl.
Hello, Lena, Thanks so much for inviting me to your blog! I’m honored to be here!

Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
I find a lot of myself in most every female character I write, but it’s as though different parts of myself in different characters. I know one of the kudos I get is how different and well-developed my women are. I believe we all are so multi-faceted. Now my heroes are all a lot like my husband, and my characters’ girlfriends are very similar to my own dear lady friends!

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
I went right ahead and just looked quirky up hoping it would give me some ideas, insight into myself. Basically we’re talking about a peculiar personality trait. Synonyms include
eccentric
idiosyncraticunconventionalunorthodoxunusualstrange,bizarrepeculiaroddout-landishzany. Yes, that helps. I think the quirkiest thing about me, and I’ve done it a lot, is to burst out singing a song in just about any setting. Sometimes something someone said triggers it, but anyone around me is liable to be serenaded!

And ONE thing I did was when I was a teen and at the grocery store with my mother. She was shopping in the produce department at our local Safeway. Back then they had li’l squirt hoses to keep the veggies moist and fresh. I picked one up and squirted her GOOD! J

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
As a little girl I loved books, and English was my favorite subject. In 1962, at Letot Elementary in Dallas, I was a 7th grader with an essay to write. “What will you be doing in the year 2000?” Well, I wrote of being an intergallactically famous author jetting from planet to planet signing autographs! Though space travel may not have met up to my imaginations, my first book did come out in the year 2000. How fun is that? So long ago, God gave me the desire to write, and then let me remember the homework assignment!

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
Since I started writing, I do read less, but I pretty much still have a book with me everywhere I go. The older I’ve got and the closer to the Lord I’ve drawn, the more I hate reading novels with foul language because I can’t escape saying the words in my head. Ugh! So these days, that eliminates a LOT. For the last many years, I’ve only read authors I personally know for pleasure, and now that I’m in the Christian genre which thrills me so! I love historical and contemporary romances as well as Biblical fiction. I steer clear of horror and a lot of fantasy (when wizards and witches are characters). My favorite author I don’t know personally is Bodie Thoene. I devoured her Zion series!

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
Yes, Miss Lena, and you don’t know the half of it! There’s only one answer to this question and that is : by the mercy and grace of God! In 2002, after one thrilling year of empty nesting with my high school sweetheart, the Lord saw fit to fill our nest right back up with four precious grandsons aged 6, 4, 3, and newborn straight home from the hospital. The oldest is a high school senior this year and will be off to college in the fall. When I read scripture that says He won’t put on us more than we can bear, sometimes I think He has way too high an opinion of this woman J But He is faithful to give me energy to go to one more parent/teacher conference and drive to one more season of baseball practices and games. How does anyone make it without God’s peace continually raining down on them?

That is so true. How do you choose your characters’ names?
Isn’t this one of the most fun parts of writing fiction? I love naming characters or goats or dogs and horses, even chickens J When I hear an interesting name, I try to make a mental note to remember that one. But actually choosing a name is quite random, I use what hits me or comes to me. I like to go and look up what it means after. In a WIP, THE BEDWARMER’S SON, the historical heroine’s name is Jasmine. She’s the bedwarmer. I went and looked up Jasmine to find it’s a flower that blooms in the night and its essential oils have a sedative quality. How awesome is that? I attribute such to Holy Spirit’s inspiration.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
I had to think about this one for awhile. My immediate response would have been reeling in my handsome husband, but I can’t take credit for that because I know God created him in his mother’s womb to be my husband and me to be his wife, so I can’t very well be proud of that. Next I thought of being published by Simon and Schuster’s Howard Book division. I suppose that could be the answer since it is a personal accomplishment I never dreamed would come to pass, but without God introducing me to Mary Sue McAdoo Seymour and her suggesting that I write a historical Christian romance … I suppose in the end, as scripture says, ALL good things come from above, so the accomplishment I’m most proud of is accepting Him as my Lord and Savior. Everything else pales in comparison.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
I’ve always said I would want to be a bird if I wasn’t a human. I love being up high and looking down on creation. Living in trees appeals to me, flight seems absolutely thrilling, and knowing God’s eye was on me … AND, I could still sing and sing!

What is your favorite food?
Mexican. I could eat jalepenos, tortillas, and beans morning noon and night. I enjoy a steak and when we eat out at Clarksville’s excellent little Mexican restaurant Rio Verde, I usually order Steak Mexican. They chop the steak about the size of my little fingernail and grill it with same sized chopped tomatoes, onions, bell pepper and jalapeños. Yum, with pico and sour cream. Is your mouth watering yet? Add the rice and beans J

I love Mexican food, only with a touch of jalapeños. I like my Mexican food mild, but with just a little kick of spice. What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
Life proved to be the biggest problem in the beginning, rearing my family (four children and work). I first started writing again when the two big ones were married and the two little ones were older. I suppose getting started heated my passion to a slow burn that’s never quit again even when we got the four grandsons, although marketing sure took a hit as travel became practically impossible.

Tell us about the featured book.
VOW UNBROKEN, the story of a spunky and determined young widow hanging onto God for all she was worth, is an anointed novel. Nothing has been easy since leaving her father’s home in rebellion to marry a man he didn’t approve of, and she thinks all her trials are only what she deserves for disobeying God and going against His Word. She’s bound her ownself by her vow, and it looks as though she’ll never know love again, that she’s doomed to live a lonely life rearing her daughter and orphaned nephew.

She misses her neighbors’ wagon train taking their crops to market; there’s no one left to help her. When she realizes she has to take her cotton herself, well, her friend remembers Henry Buckmeyer, but he has an awful reputation for being a drunk and lay-about. The land her husband and her brother left the children is in jeapordy—the very existence of her little family.
But God has other plans and uses all the seemingly bad things to her good, just like He promises. It’s a story I pray will call readers to a self examination of their heart toward God and draw them closer to Him.

Please give us the first page of the book.
He took the pinch of cotton Sue offered and rubbed it between his short, pudgy fingers. “I’m truly sorry, Mis’ess Baylor. Two cents is all I can pay.”

She seethed, but forced at least a show of civility. “Mister Littlejohn.” She spoke in a stiff staccato. “A week ago. Before everyone left. You promised three-and-a-half to four cents a pound! You said depending on the quality. That is the main reason. The biggest reason. That I didn’t go with the others.”

The man smiled. “Oh, I might have said two-and-a-half or maybe even three, but things change. You know that.”

She couldn’t stand being talked down to, especially by such a lying loafer.

“I wish I could help you, but two cents it is. I mean, besides, anyone can see.” He held the sample up. “It’s shoddy lint.” He shook his head. “Pardon me for saying, Mis’ess Baylor, but a granger you are not.”

“Anyone can see its excellent quality, you mean.”

A bit of breeze, a very little bit, stirred the top layer of dust from the street; it cooled her skin, but her insides still steamed.

He stuck out his bottom lip. “I’d advise you to take my offer. I can pay half now, the rest when I return.”

Sue studied his face while a hundred calculations ran through her mind. He certainly didn’t look like the weasel he’d turned out to be. Her cotton was as good, if not better, than any of the loads that left last Thursday. She reached up and massaged her neck, then lifted her braid to let some air dry her sweat.

DOWN TO EARTH - Patricia Pacjac Carroll - One Free Book

Readers, I’m thrilled to have my very good friend, Patricia Pacjac Carroll, back on my blog. You will be, too. I just recently finished reading her book, Golden Dreams. I hope you didn’t miss getting a copy of it. If you did, check it out. A very good historical, western, wagon train story.

Welcome back, Patty. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
More stories. Right now, I’m working on a series of mail-order bride stories.

Tell us a little about your family.
I have the best husband. He takes care of me and works hard so that I can write.  My son is wonderful. My latest book, Bounty is dedicated to him. And I can’t leave out the snarky overgrown papillon, Jacs. We are a blessed and happy famiy.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
Yes, unfortunately I have less time to read. While it is hard to turn off the editor, I know how hard it is to write a good story. So, I am pulling for author as well as the characters.

What are you working on right now?
Caroline’s Love. She is the first of mail-order brides to get her man. Unfortunately for her, she discovers that two other women have the same sweet letters that she answered.

What outside interests do you have?
Writing takes up the bulk of my time and life. Of course there is Jesus – He is the author and finisher of my faith. Friends. I love to laugh with my friends and yes, eat lunch or dinner out.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I love the Old West. So far all my stories are set in the West.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
I would have to Jesus. Can’t top an evening in the presence of the Lord.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
Work only on one computer. When I started writing, I had a desktop, laptop and a mini PC. I spent the whole first month of writing the first book by trying to figure out which chapter one to use. I had oodles of them. Organizing files is still an ongoing battle. BUT at least they are all on my laptop.

That’s why I like using Dropbox. When I work on a chapter, whether on my desktop or laptop, Dropbox syncs the files on both machines—and saves a copy in the Cloud, so I never lose it. What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
Discipline and diligence. And I need His help for those are hard for me. To go and play seems to be a loud voice of distraction for me.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
Learn the craft.
Write and write and write
Find trusted author friends to critique your work and help brainstorm.

Tell us about the featured book.
Down to Earth is my only Contemporary Romance right now. It’s about a young widow with two small children and a snippy mother-in-law. She needs a loan to save the family ranch and is about to meet with the banker, an old flame, when a skydiver falls into the tree outside her home and into her life. Jenna is faced with risking her heart. She’d loved her husband, but he died. The banker offers security. Clay offers her love. Down to Earth is a story about second chances, love, and faith.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Prologue
His eyes glared dusky blue. A shade reserved for an anger Jenna Lairdon had only seen a few times in their marriage. She shuffled backward across the cool slats of the wooden floor and wished a hole would open up and swallow her.

The past month, Sam had grown distant. The financial hole they had dug for themselves created a canyon between them. Why had she bought that outfit, the shoes for Amy, and the boots for Sammy? Hot accusations of guilt battered her mind. Once again, she had failed.

A quick glance at Sam’s face set off an awkward rhythm in her chest. Her palms grew clammy. She kept quiet, muffling the witty remarks that threatened to escape. Humor would not diffuse this argument.

The crunch of paper drew her focus to him. He held up a wad of crumpled charge slips in his calloused hand. “The credit’s gone. We’re gonna lose Arrowhead.”

His family’s ranch. That was all he cared about. She turned to explain and stopped. His voice, deep with rage, didn’t scare her. Sam wouldn’t hurt her. She knew that. But the fear that clouded his face terrified her.

Jenna lowered her head. “I … I’ll return them tomorrow. I’m sorry, I should have known better.”
She could take Sam angry but not beaten.

“It’s too late.” His words a mere whisper.

She slipped onto the bed, grabbed her grandmother’s quilt, and scrunched the soft layers in her fingers.

Heavy steps jarred her. Sam swiped the keys from the cluttered dresser. His wild grab knocked their wedding picture to the floor and shattered the glass.

A SENSIBLE ARRANGEMENT - Tracie Peterson - One Free Book, Plus Much More

Readers, I've loved reading Tracie's books since we were both authors for Heartsong Presents. Then Tracie became my acquisition editor there. I met her and Jim at the first American Christian Romance Writers over a decade ago. She's a very special person. to me.

Bio: Tracie Peterson is the award-winning author of over eighty novels, both historical and contemporary. Her avid research resonates in her stories, as seen in her bestselling Heirs of Montana series and Alaskan Quest series. Tracie and her family make their home in Montana

Welcome back, Tracie. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
I hope I see more readers getting to know God on a deeper level. The books are a ministry and I love what God has done to encourage people through them. I get letters all the time that share how God is at work and it humbles me to be a part of it.

Tell us a little about your family.
I have been married to my zany, goofy husband Jim for over 34 years now. We work together 24/7 and thoroughly enjoy each other’s company. I have three adult children scattered to the winds, although Erik is with us now as he recovers from knee surgery. I have three grandchildren – Rainy, Fox and Max. And my mom lives with us in Montana.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
It really hasn’t. I was always a voracious reader and still am. I suppose I have been digging more into the Bible and Bible studies because I don’t want to misrepresent God to the reader.

What are you working on right now?
A 3-book series set in 1880’s Seattle. I have some zany old ladies who own a bridal prep school. The romances focus on some of the gals passing through the school, as well as their niece (a rather Anne of Green Gables type) who doesn’t seem teachable.

What outside interests do you have?
I’ve gotten addicted to play Minecraft on the computer. Well, not really playing it – just creating in it. I also love to spend time with my grandkids as often as possible, and of course read. Music has always been a strong passion in my life, so I try to keep up with that as well.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
It really varies. Sometimes it comes from taking a trip somewhere and reading about a historical event. Sometimes it comes through reading non-fiction books. I have even chosen settings from places I lived.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
Wow, I really don’t know. I’ve seen some answers to this question be Jesus, but I spend every day with Him, so that’s not my answer. I think it would be fascinating to talk to Jane Austen or Louisa May Alcott. I could gush all over them about what a fan I am. J

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
How important it is to network with other authors.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
He’s really been teaching me the importance of silence and praying.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
1. Pray before writing.
2. Do your research.
3. Don’t be afraid to go with the story God gives you – no matter how strange it might seem.
4. Figure out why you’re writing. If you know the reason be it money, fame, God, because you can’t stop, it’s important to know why you write. For me it changes everything about what I do and why, and takes the stress off. Guess that was 4 things. J

And they were 4 very good answers. Tell us about the featured book.
A SENSIBLE ARRANGEMENT is book 100 for me. It’s the start of a brand new series called Lone Star Brides. It’s set in Texas during the 1890’s and will tie together two previous series (STRIKING A MATCH and LAND OF THE LONE STAR). People kept asking for more about a couple of the characters from those series and I thought, “Why not marry them?”

Marty Dandridge Olson is ready to leave behind the pain of the past.

Answering an advertisement for a "Lone Star bride," she leaves her Texas ranch and heads to Denver to marry a man she doesn't know.

Jake Wythe is the man waiting for her.

Burned by love, he marries now simply to satisfy the board of Morgan Bank, which believes a man of his standing in society should be wed. Together Jake and Marty agree they are done with romance and love and will make this nothing more than a marriage of convenience.

When missing money and a collapsing economy threaten his job, Jake's yearning to return to ranching grows ever stronger, much to Marty's dismay. But a fondness has grown between them, as well, further complicating matters.

What will happen when their relationship shifts in unexpected ways . . . and dreams and secrets collide?

Please give us the first page of the book.
Texas
December 24, 1892
Marty Dandridge Olson looked over the letters once again. There were three, and each contained a variety of information meant to assist her in making a decision. A life-changing decision.

“Hannah would call me mad,” Marty mused aloud. She picked up one of the letters—the latest—and noted the first line: I have enclosed funds enough to cover your travels to Denver.

Marty shook her head. Am I mad? Crazy to seriously consider this matter?

Putting the letter down, Marty got to her feet and paced the small kitchen. She put a few pieces of wood into the cookstove and stoked the fire. The chill of the day wasn’t that great, but she was restless and it gave her something to do—something other than contemplate those letters ... and what happened four years earlier.
