TRACES OF VIRTUE - Robin Patchen - One Free Book

Welcome back, Robin. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about? I find myself writing often about a person’s identity in Christ. I think it’s easy for us as believers to forget who we are—completely forgiven, completely accepted, completely loved by our Creator. I love to write stories about people who are grappling with self-worth, to show them coming to terms with their own value.

What other books of yours are coming out soon? My latest book, Traces of Virtue, released October 19. My next will come out this winter.

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why? What a fun question! My son is a missionary with Youth with a Mission, the largest missionary organization in the world. I would love to meet the founder of YWAM, Loren Cunningham. He’s been to every single nation in the world. I can’t imagine the stories he has to tell.

We’ve had a very close friend who served on the very first YWAM mercy ship. What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why? I think my answer to this question would probably change daily. Today, I think it would be really amazing to meet Benjamin Franklin. He was such a unique individual, flawed and brilliant. Again, I think he would have some great stories to tell. (Maybe I’m just in the mood for great stories today!)

How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers? This writing thing is much harder than it looks. Keep writing. Most writers never get their first books published—I know I didn’t! I have multiple unpublished manuscripts in the proverbial drawer. But good writers keep writing, and their writing improves, and their storytelling abilities get better, and eventually they write something that makes editors—and readers—take notice. Don’t give up. Maybe you’ll get book number four or five or six published, and then you’ll be able to get the earlier books into the hands of readers after that.

Tell us about the featured book. Traces of Virtue is book four in my Coventry Saga. It mostly takes place in Boston, but the characters spend some time in Coventry, New Hampshire, and they even manage a trip to Nutfield (the setting of an earlier series of books.) Here’s the blurb:

When doing what's right goes terribly wrong...

From her deathbed, Carly Garcia's mother asked Carly to look after her stepfather and stepsisters. Carly is trying to keep that promise, but now she has a new life to protect, this one innocent and vulnerable. She visits her ex to tell him a truth he doesn't deserve to know... and witnesses his murder. Now, Carly's on the run from killers whose faces she never saw.

Braden Reilly is building a career in Coventry, New Hampshire, happy to put the drama of his crime-ridden Boston neighborhood behind him. When a woman he's spent years trying to forget shows up on his doorstep, his first instinct is to turn her away. But the wounds on her arms and the fear in her eyes have him offering sanctuary. The story she tells makes his blood curdle.

Join Carly and Braden as they seek to discover who's behind a murder nobody believes occurred before the killers catch up to Carly and her unborn child.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Carly Garcia’s choices had dwindled to two—a lifetime of hell or an eternity there.

When she was a little girl, back when home meant the scent of tamales and the sound of lullabies sung in lilting Spanish, back when she was the only daughter of the most generous, most beautiful woman on the block, Carly had thought the world a magical place. She’d believed in laughter and beauty and angels. She’d believed in goodness. She’d believed in God.

She still believed in God. Everything else was gone.

She shoved the offensive plastic stick with its two blue lines back into the packaging, then wrapped the whole thing in toilet paper and shoved it deep in the trash can. Nobody would discover it there. It wasn’t as if it would occur to her stepsisters to take out the trash. And her stepfather’s contribution to the household included the paycheck that barely covered the bills—and little else. He was skilled at home improvement. At least he could do that—fix a running toilet, repair a gouged wall, paint. He’d even tried to teach her some of his skills, but she wasn’t dumb enough to take those lessons. Whatever she learned to do would become her job, and the last thing she needed was to take on more responsibility around the house.

TACOS FOR TWO - Betsy St. Amant - One Free Book

Bio: Betsy St. Amant is the author of more than fifteen inspirational romances, including The Key to Love, and a frequent contributor to iBelieve.com. She lives in north Louisiana with her husband, two daughters, a collection of Austen novels, and an impressive stash of pickle-flavored Pringles. When she’s not composing her next book or trying to prove unicorns are real, Betsy can usually be found somewhere in the vicinity of a white chocolate mocha—no whip.

Welcome back, Betsy. Can you please provide a brief summary of your latest novel, Tacos for Two? Think “food truck wars” meets You’ve Got Mail! Rory and Jude have fallen for each other anonymously online, not realizing the other is their biggest competition in an upcoming food truck contest they both are desperate to win. With a multilayered family dynamic, witty online banter, and loads of spicy conflict, Tacos for Two will leave readers chuckling, cheering, and craving Mexican food.

Tacos for Two is the second book you’ve published with Revell, after The Key to Love (2020). How does Tacos for Two differ from your previous novel? The Key to Love was sweet, while Tacos for Two is all savory! My characters in The Key to Love were searching for identity and the true meaning of love, while Tacos for Two centers more on the themes of family heritage, loyalty, and sacrifice.

The main female protagonist is Rory Perez. Can you please tell us a little more about her character and her backstory? Rory has a heart of gold and a strong sense of loyalty to family—that’s why she is still working so hard to make her aunt’s food truck business succeed even though she can’t cook. She feels an obligation to her cousin with special needs and her late aunt—who was like a mother to her—to make the food truck a success . . . even if it’s to her own detriment. Rory loves jogging, lavender tea, and her heritage but is sick of Mexican food, hates change (and cilantro!), and is weary of carrying so many burdens. Her one escape has been communicating online via an anonymous dating app, through which she’s formed a deep friendship with a man she knows only by the handle StrongerMan99. Rory must learn that change is inevitable, and sometimes, that’s a very good thing.

Rory and Jude have already met . . . even if they don’t know it yet. Can you share how the idea for their meet-cute came to be? You’ve Got Mail has always been one of my favorite movies. I couldn’t resist setting up a similar meet-cute as a nod to the Tom Hanks classic! I also love the instant conflict that arises in romance novels when characters have a secret identity that must be discovered and responded to.

Both characters feel trapped by family circumstances. Can you elaborate on the similarities you see between these characters and why they may have some common experiences? Rory and Jude have much more in common than they first think. Jude is wealthy, and Rory is struggling to make ends meet for her inherited food truck business, yet they both are driven by a need much deeper and more vital than finances. They’re both struggling to thrive in a life seemingly chosen for them, rather than one of their own making. Once they start relating to each other on this level, the chemistry—and the conflict—only increases!

Why did you choose to give your more recent books food-centered themes? This unintentional “brand” of mine just evolved! It started with my novel All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes (Zondervan, 2014) and was followed by several novellas that also featured bakeries, cupcakes, or sweet treats. The Key To Love (Revell, 2020) followed suit with a French twist. After that, I thought getting out of the bakery and into a food truck might be a fresh and fun change for my readers!

What do you hope readers experience when reading Tacos for Two? I hope readers alternate laughing and swooning over Rory and Jude’s online banter, find a new love for their own family heritage, become more open to the concept of change, and of course—crave tacos with extra cilantro!

What are you working on next? I’m working on a novel right now that involves a high school English teacher, an unlikely wish in Times Square, and a famous novelist with writer’s block!

SCHOOL OF THE SPIRIT - Lee M Cummings - One Free Book

Bio: Lee M. Cummings is the founding and senior pastor of Radiant Church, a multisite church reaching the globe via Radiant Church campuses and online at radiant.church. In addition to his role at Radiant, he serves as an overseer and mentor to many next-generation leaders and church planters.

Welcome, Pastor Lee. You say in your new book that the Holy Spirit is the most misunderstood person of the Trinity. Why is that? When we talk about God as “Father,” we have a frame of reference for what a Father does, or should do: procreates, protects and provides. When we talk about God the Son, we have four gospels to read about what Jesus was and is like. We see him teach, correct, laugh, cry, show compassion and pray to the Father. We see him sacrifice and lay his life down. But when we come to the Holy Spirit… it’s mysterious. Jesus said it’s like the wind (John 3). We see the effects of Him but cannot grasp him or relate. Sometimes our only point of reference is the way Hollywood portrays spirits…in this situation. It’s sometimes easier to ignore HIM because it’s too difficult to embrace. We end up with a Triune God of Father, Son and Holy Bible instead of embracing and growing in our understanding with the Spirit of God, our Helper.

You talk about the Western World having a bias against the supernatural. What do you mean by that? Western civilization has been infected with a deadly virus. That virus is secularism that is rooted in the Enlightenment, which has produced a naturalistic worldview that only believes in what our five natural senses can experience, and science can test. We have become skeptical against claims of the supernatural and invisible. In this way, man is at the center of the universe and the unseen realm has been relegated to medieval myths, leaving our culture spiritually bankrupt.

You mention that sanctification is one role of the Holy Spirit. Why is that not taught more often in our churches today? Our American gospel has been reduced to praying a prayer of faith and then awaiting Heaven as our reward when we die. We have not developed a healthy understanding of how God wants to continue His work that began at salvation throughout all the days of our lives, conforming us into the image of Christ.

You draw a parallel between Exodus 20 and the day of Pentecost in Acts. Talk about that connection. The feast of Pentecost was a commemoration of God coming in power to give the Law to Israel at Mount Sinai. His intention was to speak it over them and establish Israel as His covenant people to become lights to the nations of the world — so they would come to desire God. In fact, when God spoke the law first, it is said He spoke it in 70 languages simultaneously. This mission failed when Israel pulled back from His presence and were satisfied with the written law on tablets. This feast was also called the Feast of Harvest.  In Acts 2, on the very same day, God came down again in fire, power and love. He filled the Church, His new covenant people, and wrote the Law on their hearts. He dispersed fire over them and had them speak out the praises of God in multiple languages while people from every nation of the earth were present. God had fulfilled his desired goal finally and empowered the church to go into the nations.

Many have equated salvation with the baptism of the Holy Spirit. What do you believe the Bible teaches about that? There are some evangelicals who argue that we receive the Holy Spirit at conversion and that’s all that there is. Yet, they read the book of Acts and see that the same disciples who received the Holy Spirit in the upper room with Jesus, receive Him again in Acts chapter two on the day of Pentecost and again in Acts chapter 4. Some claim that the phrase “baptism in or with the Holy Spirit” is problematic and we should just use the phrase “filled” with the Holy Spirit with the gifts of the spirit activated. Regardless of the semantics, what we can all agree upon is we need MORE of the Holy Spirit. Not quantitatively but qualitatively. We must be continually filled with the Holy Spirit (Eph 5) and this requires us having a starting point after conversion in which we recognize our need of more, and invite the Person of the Holy Spirit to have more control of us and to release the power Jesus promised to us.

Shall we open a can of worms? Is the gift of tongues for everyone or is it a singular gift for some people? I believe that the gift of tongues, like all the other manifestations, is available for every believer. If the gift giver lives in us, then He can manifest anyway He wants. Tongues is not proof of anything, but it is the privilege and powerfully available gift for all who respond to Paul’s admonition to “earnestly desire the gifts"

Some theologians believe the gifts of the Holy Spirit are no longer in operation. Why are they wrong? You have to do some theological gymnastics to make the Bible say that the gifts are gone. Church history doesn’t support this statement and the experience of over 3/4 of Christians globally begs to differ.

If you could explain the Holy Spirit to someone in one or two sentences, what would you say? The Holy Spirit is the abiding Presence of God with us, to lead and teach us, conform us to be like Jesus, intercede on our behalf and empower us to follow Jesus supernaturally. The Holy Spirit is your greatest advantage this side of eternity.

NIGHT FALL - Nancy Mehl - One Free Book

Welcome Back, Nancy. How did you come up with the idea for this story? The idea came from the trains that passed behind our previous house. Although they might annoy some people, I loved them. (Except when certain engineers blew their horns at two o’clock in the morning right behind our bedroom!) I think trains are mysterious and romantic. I wonder where they’re going and what the people manning them are thinking as the world rushes by. So, the idea of someone using trains to stash bodies developed in my mind…and The Train Man was born!

If you were planning a party with Christian authors of contemporary fiction, what six people would you invite and why? Oh, dear. I hate to answer this because I don’t want to leave anyone out. I guess I’d say my dil, Shaen Layle, since I know she’d want to be there and I love her so much! And maybe Tosca Lee because I absolutely adore her - I love her writing. Let’s add Patricia Bradley, Mary Alford, Mary Ellis (actually, I’d ask all of the Suspense Sisters if there was room!) and…hmmm. Maybe Angela Ruth Strong? I really like her. Oh, and Susan Sleeman? (I know, that’s seven. LOL!)

And a very good, interesting group it would be. Now let’s do that for a party for Christian authors of historical fiction, what six people would you invite and why? Kim Sawyer because I love her to pieces. Kim Woodhouse. Ditto. Jaimie Jo Wright (she’s combines the past and the present to create awesome novels!), Kathleen Y’Barbo (she wrote a series that is one of my favorites! And she’s such a lovely person), Loree Lough (love her too!), and of course, you! I met you at a writers’ convention years ago and was so impressed with you. I’d love to get to know you better.

I’d love to get to know you better, too, because I love your books, and I love every one of the other authors you chose. Many times, people (and other authors) think you have it made with so many books published. What is your most difficult problem with writing at this time in your career? I’ve spent so much time writing that sometimes I wish I had more time off. Life seems to be rushing by. But of course, especially through a pandemic, I’m grateful to have a job that allows me to work at home. That’s a real blessing.

Tell us about the featured book. Back cover copy:

For any little boy or girl who hears the Train Man speak,
Who feels his rancid breath caress their pretty cheek,
Must close their eyes, pretend to sleep, and very softly pray,
Or else the evil Train Man may carry them away.

Finally free of her troubled upbringing, Alex Donovan is able to live out her childhood dream of working for the FBI. But soon after she becomes a member of the FBI's elite Behavioral Analysis Unit, authorities in Missouri contact them about bodies found on freight trains--all killed in the same way.

Alex never expected to be forced to confront her past in this new job, but she immediately recognizes the graffiti messages the killer is leaving on the train cars. When the BAU sends her to gather information about the messages from her aunt in Wichita, Kansas, Alex is haunted by the struggles she thought she'd left behind forever.
In a race against time to solve the case and recover a deadly virus sample the killer intends to spread, Alex must face how far she'll go--and what she's willing to risk--to put a stop to the Train Man.

Please give us the first page of the book. (I added the complete poem at the beginning of the book and a few sentences to finish the thought on the first page.)

Do you hear the Train Man rumbling in the night?

Can you see his dreadful face grinning with delight?

If you hear his horrid wheels clicking round and round,

Cover your head and plug your ears to block the frightful sound.

For any little boy or girl who hears the Train Man speak,

Who feels his rancid breath caress their pretty cheek,

Must close their eyes, pretend to sleep, and very softly pray,

Or else the evil Train Man may carry them away.

“THE TRAIN MAN,” A NURSERY RHYME

His mother sat in the chair next to his bed, reading from The Book. He was almost twelve now, and she’d been reading it to him ever since he was a little kid.

Adam hated it. It scared him. Did everyone really come from beings in the sky? Were people really born either demons or angels? Mother said they were—and that they had no choice in the matter.

He’d begun to believe he was a demon, but he’d always been too scared to ask her. He suspected she thought he was, though, because of the way her dark eyes bored into his. It made him feel strange inside. But if he was a demon, didn’t that make her and Father demons too? Mother said demons could have only demon children, which meant demon children always had demon parents. He didn’t want to be a demon. If only he could run away. Go somewhere else. Be someone else. But that would never happen. He was trapped.

He tried to be as good as his mother wanted him to be, but it was hard. Too hard. She considered everything a temptation. Even food. That meant they never had much to eat in their house. Tired of being hungry, he’d even stolen a candy bar from the store when no one was looking. He’d stuck it in his pants pockets, and he hadn’t been caught.

But would an angel steal? Or just a demon?

You have me hooked already. How can readers find you on the Internet?

My website is: www.nancymehl.com. My blog is the Suspense Sisters: www.suspensesisters.blogspot.com. And I’m very active on Facebook.

A Special Extra Post This Week - SAVE THE DATE - Lisa M Prysock and 11 other authors - One Free Book

Exciting New Release--: Save the Date

Welcome, Lisa. How did this box set come about?

Hi Lena! Thank you so much for having me on your blog today. Save the Date began with a friendly chat between myself and Jan Thompson, one of the other authors in the collection, about how many book covers we both collect for all of the books we’d like to write in the future.

After having a chuckle about our obsession with book covers, we talked about how fun it would be to grow a team of writers to make a run for USA Today. Since we’d been talking about book covers and romance and weddings, we talked about writing books that have something to do with a wedding dress somewhere in the storyline. I love all things fashion, and don’t get me started about how much I love weddings. Ha ha, okay, get me started. We can talk about it all day.

By the way, Jan has hit the USA Today bestseller list three times! In fact, several writers in this collection have hit the list before, which is way cool in my humble opinion. The writers in this sweet, Christian Contemporary Romance, limited time, anthology box set include, Hallee Bridgeman, Jan Thompson, Liwen Y. Ho, T.K. Harris, Kari Trumbo, Camy Tang, Dori Harrell, Jaycee Weaver, Marion Ueckermann, Shoshanna Gabriel, Chautona Havig, and myself, Lisa M. Prysock. Whether or not we hit USA Today with Save the Date, we are excited to have crossed the finish line and published this collection together.

What is the hardest thing about writing part of a collection?

For me, the hardest part in writing on any multi-author project is overcoming the objection of fear—fear that my book won’t measure up to the other talented authors I’m writing with on the project, whether it’s a series or a box set. You have to remind yourself that you are there because God opened the door and He believes in you. You have to remember that each writer is unique. On a Christian project, each one is divinely inspired in a unique way, as well. We each bring something to the table, and the more diverse we are, the better the end result. You also have to lay aside the fears, find your confidence, and believe in yourself. You’ve worked hard to hone your writing ability, and now it’s time to buckle down and reach for courage from within.

Do each of the books in this 12-book box set connect?

No, the books in Save the Date are all different. In this case, there is one book for each of the twelve months of the year. Each revolves around a heroine struggling to overcome the obstacles to finding her “happily ever after.” They have different tropes and settings, too. Each book also has a secondary thread of something about a wedding dress somewhere in the storyline. Readers are telling us they have strong characters, humor, inspiration, faith, and engaging storytelling.

My book, A Valentine for Veronica, will be the beginning of a future series, Brides of Distinction. Veronica buys a wedding dress even though she doesn’t have a boyfriend or fiancé. To further complicate matters, upon meeting her arch nemesis from high school, now a world renowned photojournalist, Veronica agrees to have her wedding featured in a famous wedding magazine in just three months. Her pride won’t allow her to back out of it, and her biological clock is ticking anyhow. She needs to settle for a marriage of convenience, and fast!

Here’s a better look at the stunning cover--:

Can you show us the book covers for each book in this collection?

Certainly!

How many books have you written and how can readers find you on the internet?

Lena, I’ve begun to lose count of how many books I’ve written, but I think it’s around 33 contemporary and historical Christian fiction romance books, and one devotional. Readers can view all of my book covers on the carousel at my website and sign up for my newsletter here--: https://www.LisaPrysock.com

How can readers purchase this collection and can you share a blurb about it with us?

Here’s a short blurb, Lena.

As our guest of honor, you’re cordially invited on a journey through twelve heartwarming and inspirational novellas that will take you from small-town America to romantic Paris, from the sunny shores of Hawaii to New Zealand. Office romances, friends-to-lovers, second chances, and more await you in these stories full of forgiveness, redemption, laughter, and love. Say ''I do'' and claim your copy of this limited-time anthology by your favorite USA Today and bestselling Christian romance authors!

Is there anything you’ve learned while writing in this box set?

Yes! I learned that life is short and we need to make the very best of the time we are given. While writing this box set, two writers passed away unexpectedly, leaving myself and the other writers in the collection reeling with shock and grief. Marion came down with Covid and passed away shortly thereafter. Then, before we’d barely recovered from this, Shoshanna suffered complications after a routine surgery and passed away.

We learned to dig deep and muster our courage. We reminded ourselves of our faith that God knows what is best for each of us, ultimately. We leaned on Him hard for the strength to cross the finish line in the midst of our feelings being tossed to and fro. Some of the other writers had surgeries, injuries, or loved ones going through challenging times. We learned to be strong and courageous in spite of all this.

We decided as a team to dedicate the collection to Marion and Shoshanna and donate a generous amount of the preorder proceeds to their families to help with funeral and medical expenses. We were not able to obtain the final copy of the book cover for the hardback or paperback we’d planned since Marion was also a very talented cover artist and our cover designer, but we were able to publish the eBook version.

We also believe these were the very last stories Marion and Shoshanna wrote. They would have wanted us to go forward and spread the gospel through publishing the collection.

To summarize, myself included, we all need to make sure we are staying close to Jesus. We don’t know how long our time on the earth will be. Make the most of our lives and every opportunity to share the gospel with our family, friends, acquaintances and loved ones near and far.

Tell us about the giveaway you’d like to offer readers.

Thank you, Lena. I’m giving away an eBook copy of Save the Date to one random commenter. Just tell us something you love about weddings, Christian Fiction Romance, or your favorite kind of cake! I love cake, and lemon is one of my favorites.

Please consider purchasing a copy of Save the Date, and do please tell a friend about it and share this blog post. Maybe consider buying a gift copy for someone. It could help us make the USA Today list—but even if we don’t make it, to God be all the glory for helping us cross the finish line in spite of the obstacles. We also appreciate your kind reviews and your prayers for our safety and writing endeavors. Thank you so much for stopping by today.

CAST THE FIRST STONE - David James Warren - One Free Book

Dear Readers, I have loved all the books of both Susan May Warren and James Rubart I’ve read, and they have been most of them. When I heard about this series, I knew I wanted to feature them on the blog. James is with us today.

I know that this is a collaboration. How did this series come about? The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone series was a long time coming. Ages ago (probably around 2012) Susie and I were on a short plane ride together from Asheville, North Carolina, to Atlanta. We started talking about someday writing a book together and our shared loved of time travel stories.

Then in mid 2016 Susie came up with the idea of Rembrandt Stone, called me, gave me a five second pitch, “An ex-detective goes back in time to solve cold cases … are you in?”  I laughed and gave the only appropriate response: “Are you kidding?”

Susie asked her son David to join the team and in February of 2017 the three of us gathered at my home in eastern Washington (after Susie and David battled a Seattle and eastern Washington snowstorm) and brainstormed all six of the stories. So yes, it took a while from conception to release, but it turned out to be the perfect timing.

Did you find it easy to work together on it? Yes, we did. I’ve known Susie since 2008 and we have this amazing brother/sister relationship. And I’ve known David since 2013.

How did collaborating with this team impact you? What’s great about working with two other partners is realizing how much more two other brilliant people can bring to a project. We all have blind spots and the others can fill them.

What is the hardest thing about writing as a team? Geography! While Zoom and Slack and email are great connectors, there’s nothing like being the same room together.

What are you reading right now? Vortex, Mere Christianity, The Universal Christ, The Dark Tower book 5, Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader, and Wildflower. Doesn’t everyone had five or six books going at the same time?

I usually have only 2 or 3. Would you want to work on another book together? What we’ve been dreaming about is having a film producer get interested in the series and turn them into a TV show. We have had some bites so stay tuned.

Keep me informed about the movie. I'm actually working on a film that should go into production by early 2022. What do you want to tell us about the book? It’s a roller coaster ride! Here’s more:

One case haunts him. One chance to fix the past. One mistake could cost him everything.
Ex-Minneapolis Police Detective Rembrandt Stone walked away from a career he loved—just the price of being sure he can come home to the wife and daughter he cherishes. But he can’t shake the deep regret over a case left behind.

When his mentor, the former Chief of Homicide dies and leaves Rembrandt with a box of cold cases and a mysterious watch, he finds himself thrust into a world he recognizes—a world from twenty years ago—the same world he’s woken from in a cold sweat a hundred times. But is it a dream, or some kind of twisted reality?

If he solves the case that plagues him, and justice is finally served, will it destroy the life he loves?
Strap in for a mind-bending, time travel thrill ride in Book One of this riveting new series, The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone. From the creative pens of USA Today bestselling author Susan May Warren*, award-winning author James L. Rubart**, and new voice, David Curtis Warren, writing collectively as David James Warren.

Please give us the first page of the book.

It’s the regrets that keep me awake.

The broken hearts, the lives ripped apart. The bitter finales.

The sense that, frankly, it’s not finished. I’m not finished, no matter how much I try to lie to myself.

With every crime, a clock starts ticking. A forty-eight hour fuse that ignites, chewing away at the evidence. It begins with the victim and from that moment, time gnaws at every scrap of evidence. Eyewitness memories fade, clues are scattered to the wind by the daily congestion of life.

The colder the trail grows, the lower the likelihood of finding the perpetrators. This accounts for hundreds of thousands of cold cases in dusty file rooms and backup databases around the world.

It also accounts for the fist in my gut every time I have to face the bereaved with a despairing update. And, for too long, it accounted for the indentation in a stool down at the Gold Nugget where Jericho Bloom started pouring the minute I darkened the door.

Days past, but the cases still haunt me, some waking me in the still of night, Eve’s  sleeping body like an anchor in the darkness, tethering me to the now. Sometimes she too, awakens, and knowing, finds me and urges the ghosts to quiet, tucking them back inside.

They never stay silent for long. The whispers always return.

What if? What if I could go back to the moment, the beginning of the forty-eight hour window? What if I had been smarter or faster? Maybe everything would be different.

But you can’t change the past. None of this is any consolation to the seven-year-old cherub standing in front of me. “I’m sorry. Gomer’s been missing over a month.” I’m using my most stoic, former homicide Inspector voice, despite the pull of those big blue eyes staring at me.

“I don’t have any leads—”

“But Daddy, you’re a detective.” My accuser has curly, golden blonde hair and the way she stares at me, hands on her hips, so much belief in her eyes, I am undone. “You know how to find things.”

I’m already loving this book. Where can our readers find you on the Internet?

SWEET SUMMER - Christina Sinisi - One Free Book

Welcome back, Christina. Why do you write the kind of books you do? I was writing sci fi/fantasy novels that weren’t getting anywhere. My mentor, Eloisa James, asked why I wasn’t writing Inspirational fiction since my faith matters so much to me. I had no good answer. I switched and have been so much happier—it still took a few years to get published, but now I am writing for the glory of God and the words just flow.

I love it when that happens. Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life? My happiest days are my wedding day and the births of my children. I am happily married now for 35 years!

How has being published changed your life? Being published opened the door to my truly focusing on my writing. I’d slowed down in the face of so much earlier rejection and went months without writing. Since I first got the novella, Christmas Confusion, accepted for publication, I haven’t stopped. I now write every day unless I am ill. Since 2019, I’ve written two books a year and have ideas stacked up waiting.

One of my early novellas was titled Christmas Confusion. What are you reading right now?   I am reading Francine Rivers’ The Masterpiece for my church’s book club.

When I obtained my copy of that book, I was on a book deadline and loaned it to a friend. Covid hit, and now I can’t find out who it was. I wish I’d written that one down. What is your current work in progress? I am in the editing stage of my Work-In-Progress, The Promise. It’s a book set in my hometown of Buchanan, Virginia, which is a departure from my previous work.  I hope readers will travel with me from the beach to the mountains.

What would be your dream vacation? I have been blessed to travel a good bit in my life and only have two states remaining to check off all 50. So, I had plans last summer to travel to Maine, but COVID intervened. My hope is to make it to Maine and Alaska in the next few years—goals.

How do you choose your settings for each book? So far, I’m writing what I know. Two out of the three books I have published are set in the Charleston, South Carolina, area where I live. It’s a beautiful place rich in history. The third book, Christmas on Ocracoke, is set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. My sister and her husband bought a rental house there in 2019 and the whole family has met there for vacation several times. The islands there are stunning as well, but in a very different way from the South Carolina beaches only a short distance away. I was awed by God’s creation and how unique each place can be.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why? Would it be bad to say my husband? We’re so busy and have been focusing on helping our grown daughter move that we need a date night!

Date nights are wonderful and necessary. What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading? I love to hike in the woods (grew up on a farm) and bake (big fan of the British Bake-Off).

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it? Time. I am a professor and department chair at a local university and work demands a great deal of my time.

What advice would you give to a beginning author? Persist. Learn all you can, write all you can, and keep going. Even if you don’t get published, find an agent, etc., you will have had the joy of writing.

Tell us about the featured book. Shelby Marano is the youngest of three sisters and was always Daddy’s baby girl—until her father was murdered when she was only eight years old. Ever since, she’s been running from anyone or anything that could truly hurt her. Instead, she seeks calculated thrills that leave her exhilarated, but when she’s caught outside during a summer storm, she quickly realizes not all adventures are within her control.

Tyler Burgess struggles with the responsibility of caring for a mother suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Forced to take a leave of absence from work and put his life on hold, his only reprieve is the volunteer work he does at the local museum. When a soaking-wet Shelby barges in, he offers her both refuge from the rain and a safe place to land. She’s the breath of fresh air he didn’t know he needed.

Tyler proves to be much more than just a nerd in a history museum, but what she finds out about him is a deal-breaker for her. As family health issues and an unknown stalker threaten Shelby’s perfect little world, she learns a hard lesson: no one can hide from the dangers of life. Can Shelby let her sisters, Tyler, and even more importantly, God, show her in one Sweet Summer that love is worth taking the risk?

Please give us the first page of the book.

Both day and night belong to you; you made the starlight and the sun.  You set the boundaries of the earth, and you made both summer and winter. Psalms 75:16-17

Water sluiced down Shelby Marano’s back, and she ran faster, as if it were possible to outrace a tropical downpour that wanted to be a hurricane when it grew up. Her feet pounded on the sidewalk next to the Charleston harbor sea wall, agony streaking up her calf. The orthopedist had advised her to take a break, but she could no more stop running than she could give up coffee or taking risks.

She slowed and searched for shelter. A black pickup approached, and she did a quick glance-over. The vehicle looked a lot like Thomas’s car, and aggravation ripped through her like a leg cramp. Then, the vehicle picked up speed, passing by. She tripped over a cobblestone, her heart slowing down in relief, and she could take in oxygen again.

Shelby focused back on her surroundings and not her paranoia. The Battery sat at the tip of the peninsula of Charleston, a beautiful green expanse with statues and cannons and a gazebo. The gazebo offered a roof, but this rain slanted sideways, and she needed walls. The ancient live oaks offered a bit of protection, but no public place for blocks. She sighed, then squealed when lightning struck in the harbor.

She picked up her pace, weaving to avoid rain puddles down East Bay Street, and took a left at the first side street that came her way. The roof overhangs helped her predicament some, but several more intersections went by before she saw an open door to a museum. If she’d gone straight down East Bay Street, she’d have located shelter faster, but she’d have walked into a tourist trap full of people while she looked like a soaked Labradoodle with her corkscrew blond curls half-soaked and half-sprung.

The sign read “Open,” and she headed for refuge. The wrought iron gate scraped the sidewalk as she shoved it open, and she danced a quickstep as thunder rolled. Up a dozen worn concrete steps and she stood on the columned porch, looking back out at the street.

“Hello?” The man’s voice came from behind her, inside the museum foyer. “You can come in and get out of the weather. We’re free.”

THE PETTICOAT SPY - Elva Cobb Martin - One Free Book

Welcome back, Elva. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon? I see more surprises and a continued writing partnership with the Lord! Back in early 2019 when first I signed a contract with Wild Heart Books for this three-novel Charleston Brides’ series, I was 75 years old. The day I dropped that signed contract into the mail slot at the Post Office, fear landed heavy on my back. Could I, at my age, possibly write three books in less than three years? Voices sounded in my head and a few in my ears. "You've bitten off more than you can chew, grandmama.” "You'll never be able to do it." I spent the next morning REALLY praying. That day an email came into my inbox. The subject heading was: "You'll See He Pulled It Off Perfectly." It was a word from a prophetess in Australia, and she was quoting from Psalm 37:5 in the Passion Translation: "Give God the right to direct your life, and as you trust Him along the way, you'll find He pulled it off perfectly." I have to tell you that word zoomed into my heart and knocked fear to smithereens. My new release, The Petticoat Spy, is Book 3. I give Father God the glory for pulling this contract off perfectly!

I was 77 years old when I signed my 3-book contract with Wild Heart Books. That soon became a 5-book series. With God, we can do it. Tell us a little about your family. My high school sweetheart husband, Dwayne, is retired and a real support of my writing and time I must spend at the computer. He happily does most of the grocery shopping and makes most of the salads for our meals—but I still do the main meal prep except on REALLY rushed days. He can whip up a good fish baked meal we do on a cookie sheet with Sam’s Club breaded flounder fillets, frozen fries, and onion rings. Of course I add a steamed veggie.

We have one son and a precious grandson who live an hour away and often visit. I also have two loving sisters who are supportive in every way.

My husband is also retired, and we cook together. Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how? Reading in my genre, especially romance and historicals, occurs more often now, but I still enjoy a good mystery, too.

What are you working on right now? Since signing a new three-book contract continuing the Charleston Brides series, I’m working on Book 4, The Captain’s Governess. This is the story of  Anna Grace’s war-widowed friend Abigail who accepts a governess position in Jamaica to begin a new life.

I’ll be eager to feature those books, too. What outside interests do you have? My husband and I are active in a local church, and walk or do workouts at a gym most days. I coordinate an internet prayer task force and also manage three rental houses that provide extra income in our retirement. Baking and gardening are also favorite things I enjoy.

How do you choose the settings for each book? I love history and particularly the time period of the1700-1800’s and sailing ships, plantation life, and a quieter, less-complicated lifestyle. All my historical novels so far are in the sailing ship era, and mainly in Charleston, South Carolina, my favorite city. But they move to the Caribbean, the Spanish Main, and the Mediterranean and Barbary Coast. In Book 2 in this series, The Sultan’s Captive, my hero even sails his ship from Charles Town to the far distant Spice Islands. My work-in-progress, The Captain’s Governess, is set in Jamaica but will end in Charleston.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would that be and why? Other than famous Bible characters, it would probably be George Washington. I’ve studied him enough to know he had a strong faith. Though not perfect, God used him to help found this great nation and steer it well in its first years. I’d like to ask him a few questions about his experience, especially the one at the beginning of his second term. Ten thousand angry colonists gathered in front of his residence and threatened him bodily harm for refusing to send our fledgling nation back into war to help our ally, France, newly warring against Great Britain. Vice-President Adams wrote in his memoirs that the main thing that saved our baby nation from dropping off the precipice into civil war at the time was probably Yellow Fever. The plague sent the rioters fleeing into the country or behind locked doors.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels? How long it takes to write, edit, publish, market a novel would have been great to know.

What new lessons in the Lord teaching your right now? I am continually being reminded that I must trust Him to bring to pass all that pertains to me and our family that He had planned and to pray and thank Him according to Philippians 4:6 without fretting. He’s also reminded me that gentleness is a great fruit to nurture in my life.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?

     a. Cover every writing project or idea with prayer and faith.

     b. Become part of a writers’ group to learn the craft. Iron sharpens iron. (Proverbs 27:17)

     c. Never give up! (Philippians 1:6)

Tell us about the featured book. The Petticoat Spy is set in Charleston during the American Revolution. Here’s the back cover.

A Charles Town belle and a blockade runner ignite fireworks in more ways than one during the American Revolution.

To Anna Grace Laurens, the war is like a distant bad dream until her family’s Charles Town plantation is burned and her parents murdered by those loyal to the king. She flees on horseback and leaps into the Cooper River to escape her pursuers.

As John Cooper Vargas sails his sloop down the river, he spots a woman diving into the water. After firing on the Tory raiders chasing her, he rescues her and offers to take her with his parents to an island hideaway for the duration of the war. But she has other plans, including revenge for her parents’ deaths. She insists he drop her off in Charles Town, even with the British planning a massive attack by land and sea to retake the city, the Pearl of the South.

John employs his sailing skills for the patriots, risking capture and death, but he enjoys his skirmishes with the British navy blockade to bring goods from the islands to aid the cause. But when Charles Town falls to the British, he docks his ship in a secret cove and joins Francis Marion's militia. This decision lands him wounded on a harbor prison ship where more men die than on the battlefield.

Anna Grace braves the deprivations, first of a city barricaded against the British, and then one surrendered and ruled by fists of iron under the English flag and injustice. At great risk to her, she spies on the British officers garrisoned in her house, and seeks a way to rescue John before it's too late.

As both American and English armies gather near Yorktown, Virginia, for a pivotal battle, can John and Anna's love for each other and their faith in God preserve them and help forge a new nation?

CHARLES TOWN

OCTOBER 31, 1779

A traitor is everyone who does not agree with me.

~ King George III, Great Britain

The wind whipped through Anna Grace Laurens’s hair as she galloped her mare back toward their Charles Town plantation through the hardwood forest she loved. In the fresh morning air, the war her brother fought with the South Carolina militia against the British faded in its heaviness. Woodsy scents of pine, sweet cedar, and birch laced with the damp earthy smell of decomposing leaves wrapped their rich scent around her.

But even as they flew along the familiar trail, something jangled against her nerves like the forewarning rumble of a storm coming.

A burly black form burst through the brush in front of her, and Jolie reared. Anna clung to her saddle and stifled the scream rising in her throat.

Big Jim. Her heart slowed its pace as she recognized their most faithful, loyal servant. His dark skin glistened with sweat and the whites of his eyes blazed in the forest shadows.

Prince, her father’s large brown mixed hound, raced from beside the man and pranced around Anna’s horse. Jolie shook her thick silver mane, snorted, and kicked out at the barking animal.

Anna Grace managed to keep her seat and pointed the tip of her whip toward the pet. “Sit, boy. Quiet.”

The dog moved to the side of the path and sat, but emitted a low whining sound.

She patted the damp neck of her beloved horse and turned to Big Jim standing near, trying to catch his breath. His torn, bloody clothing revealed wounds on his thick arms and chest. A flicker of apprehension coursed through her. “What has happened?”
