EMMA'S PRAYER - R A Giggie - One Free Ebook

Dear Readers, I’m featuring a novel from one of my Canadian writing friends today.

Welcome, R A. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
I use a lot of my likes and dislikes for at least one of my characters, like my favourite colour, foods, hobbies, and such. However her personality is not at all like me. She may be very quiet, reserved, while I’m a talker and social butterfly.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
I can’t think of anything other than this: Years ago, I went to Africa for short-term mission. First time travelling that far all alone. After landing in London, I took the shuttle to the other terminal, got off, and walked away from my three suitcases to get a trolley. I didn’t go very far, but when I turned back, the shuttle driver had put my suitcases back into the storage compartment and driven off. He thought the owner of those three pieces was still on the bus. I have no sense of direction and had no idea where to go. Imagine the fun I had trying get them back.

I can imagine. We had a somewhat similar experience when we flew into Mexico back in the ’80s. When did you first discover that you were a writer?
Just a few years ago. Writing became a hobby when I won our grade two class composition contest. Writing poems became a big thing when I was in my teens, and they often found their way as “fillers” between articles and columns in the local newspaper where my mother worked as a reporter. Later, married life happened, and it was still a hobby. I’d never called myself a writer until I published my first novel in November 2012.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
I read almost everything providing it’s clean. My favourite genre is suspense, followed by historical, Amish, western, fantasy/paranormal. Sci-fi is the one thing that I’m not really into. This said, the fact that I don’t care for TV sci-fi programs doesn’t mean I wouldn’t enjoy anything in that genre. I just never read any.

I’ve read a few Christian sci-fi novels that were awesome. How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
With great difficulty. :D Like many writers out there, I work full-time outside the home so balancing family and home with work and writing is a never-ending task. God is good, though, and faithful. He’s always made sure I had all I needed to make this work. I’m allowed to write at work during down time, so that’s a big advantage. With MS Word on my iPhone (yes it’s quite small but hey, where there’s a will, there’s a way), I’m able to write/edit/etc.

It amazes me how you and some others I know do that. I have a fairly large HD flat-screen monitor with my desktop. My stories are written using that, and sometimes a laptop for some editing. How do you choose your characters’ names?
Many different ways. For first names, I have a Baby Name book, but sometimes it’s just names I hear in a conversation, on TV, or even read in a magazine. For last names, I go through the phone book, saying those names out loud with the first name I picked, until I find the perfect combination.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
First and foremost, my family. God’s blessed me with an amazing husband, two wonderful sons, and one beautiful grandson. Writing my first novel would be next. I love writing.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
A big old grizzly bear. I have no idea what it is about the grizzly, other than that big round face. In my opinion, it is the most amazing and beautiful animal in all creation.

What is your favorite food?
Cheese. I eat it with just about everything. I cut small cubes into my salad, shred some on my omelet, or sprinkle grated parmesan on my chili or spaghetti, and even garlic bread. A day without cheese is … well not a good day at all. :D

I love cheese, too. My husband things everything is better with some cheese in it. What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge was trying to understand Point Of View. Until I did, all I did was head-hop. No matter how people explained it to me, I couldn’t grasp it. One day the lightbulb finally went on and I GOT IT.

It took me until at least my third novel to understand POV. Tell us about the featured book.
Emma’s Prayer is about a teen mom who puts her son up for adoption, but soon regrets her decision and sets out to get him back. Is it too late?

Across town, Cynthia Manning and her husband Logan long to have a family and after several miscarriages, they turn to adoption. They’re delighted when a baby boy is placed into their home. Is heartbreak inevitable?

Sounds very interesting. Please give us the first page of the book.

“Push!” Nurse Jackson barked.

The pain ripped through Emi’s abdomen, all the way to the tip of her toes. How much longer could she put up with it? “I’m too tired. I can’t do this anymore,” Emi cried.

“Girl, you should have thought twice before you got pregnant.”

A contraction stole Emi’s breath away. She grimaced, grabbed the handrail, and fixed her eyes on the overhead mirror. Her lips taut, she tensed every muscle in her body. Holding her breath, she pushed.

“Come on.” Nurse Jackson met Emi’s eyes. “The baby’s almost here.”

The contraction passed. Emi blew out a long ragged breath, and dropped onto the pillow like a rag doll. She eyed the husky nurse who had dark skin, short curly hair, and spoke like a drill sergeant. Emi didn’t care. She wanted it to be over. Another pain tore through her thoughts, scattering them like fallen leaves in a high wind.

“Come on, child. Push!”

The baby’s head appeared in the mirror above. Emi’s mouth fell open. In vain, she fought against the physical pain. Her heart fought harder against the mixed emotions swirling within. Was it a boy or a girl? The way he’d kicked the past few months, he had to be the next football star or professional boxer. The ultrasound technician had offered to tell her the sex. She’d declined. Why bother? She wasn’t keeping him. Or her.

“Okay,” the nurse urged. “One more push. It’ll be over.”

Emi had barely spoken a word since they’d wheeled her into the room the night before but enough was enough. “I don’t have one more,” she snapped. “You’ve been at me for hours like I could drop this baby with no effort.” Her voice resonated in the room. Sobs racked her body as the next contraction hit. Her face scrunched, she clenched her jaw, and she pushed with all her might. As the first rays of sunlight shone through the window seeking Emi’s blurred vision, tearing agony struck. The room spun. Noises faded. Total darkness. Silence.

RESCUED - Tina Pinson - One Free Book

Welcome back, Tina. How did you come up with the idea for this story?
My love for WWII and movies of that time gave me the idea for this story. The Trail of the Sandpiper Series. Betrayed, Rescued and Avenged follow the story of Justine Whitman, a missionary wife whose compound is attacked and she must get herself and several children off the island through enemy lines. The navy is there and after a spy. And they have to use code to decipher between the real Sandpiper and the fake. The story comes from three movies Pearl Harbor, which shows the attack on the island. Father Goose, a story about a drunk coastwatcher and a girl's school teacher and the girls they have to get off the island, and Windtalkers, which tells about the Navaho Code Talkers.

Many times, people (and other authors) think you have it made with so many books published. What is your most difficult problem with writing at this time in your career?
Right now my mind feels kind of fried. I have several books to finish, and one on deadline, but we just moved and are still unpacking and getting our house in order and we are trying to set up a business and still trying to get our other house sold. Plus I just got over being sick. Needless to say, it makes sitting down to think hard. Not that I can't sit down, but when I do, I can't always formulate the words that have been running through my head. I hand write most of my stories and still come back wondering if that's what I really meant to say.

Tell us about the featured book.
Rescued is the second in my Trail of the Sandpiper Series. Justine Whitman, whose missionary compound was attacked in Betrayed— book one, is still trying to get herself and several children off the island. She also has the US military to contend with. Tyler Merrick of the US Navy has finally decided she is not the spy and can be trusted, and he follows her to a sheltered island where they hope the Nandus, the sub that is coming to get them, can pick them up without Japanese detection as the Japanese are not only following them on land but they are waiting offshore for the sub as well. Justine and Tyler still don't know who the enemy in their ranks is and hope they can catch them before someone else dies.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Island of New Guinea, 1942
"Please, please, don't kill me. Don't..." She shrank back against the muddy sidewalls of her prison—afraid to look up at the man who reached for her through the bars of the grate. In her heart, she knew who reached for her; she could almost see his leering smile.

She whispered his name, "Thomas MacGregor," better known as Tomoyuki Nekata, the Japanese commander. The enemy.

He wanted her trust. Ha. The traitor. He'd come back to kill her. She froze, hoped he'd go away. He stood there. Watching her. Breathing heavily.

A long arm spanned the distant and his fingers fell on her. His nails cut into her head as he grabbed a handful of hair and began to tug.

She shivered and started to whimper, "No, no, please. I don't want to die. I can't die, my children, my children..." She pled with her tormentor. Thomas MacGregor didn't answer. He was a shadow with dark eyes and a white smile.

She started to scream.

Slapping at her tormentor, Justine sat up and found herself wildly swatting thin air. There was no hand in her hair, no tormentor. She sat in darkness. Alone. Her heart fluttered in her chest as she labored to breathe, she covered it and pressed. Then felt along her limbs and body to make sure she was okay. Her gaze darting about, she listened to the night and realized where she was.

It had been a dream, only a dream. Justine assured herself as she took a deep breath. She was still in Dugan's back room and, for now, she was okay.

"For now." She still wasn't off the island. All the fears that threatened to overwhelm her surfaced again.

Since the Japanese invasion, Justine's life had become one ordeal after another. She'd been imprisoned. Her husband, Mark, had died. The mission camp where she'd lived had been obliterated, leaving her with several orphaned children to lead to safety. Now she had the help of Tyler Merrick and the US Navy, but still ... she felt like she'd done a dismal job. Would she ever get herself and the children to safety?

Interesting. How can readers find you on the Internet?

Indeed He has! My horizon has several new books on it. Better than Fiction releases in a few weeks, and it’s also going to available for free to subscribers. You can sign up here! http://eepurl.com/bB7fvT

Tell us a little about your family.
My husband is the best the United State Air Force has to offer. Eighteen years of service and counting. Couldn’t be more proud of my airman! I also have two amazing kids (son 14 and daughter 12) whom I homeschool. Our two German Shepherds complete the family. They keep up hopping and happy!

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
Oh my goodness, yes. I read tons of nonfiction books for historical research, and I love every minute of it. I also am more critical of fiction, which isn’t necessarily a good thing...

What are you working on right now?
Right now, I’m writing the next in the Creek Country Saga called Drawn by the Frost Moon. Can’t wait to share this amazing story! It’s taken straight from the pages of history and is deeply romantic.

What outside interests do you have?
You mean there is a world away from my laptop?? LOL My outside world includes my church family and any activities my kids have going on in the youth group.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
Mainly, I dig around in history books for interesting and little-known events that happened during the early 1800s in the Southeastern U.S. and involved the Muscogee Indians. Then I base my plot around that event.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
I wish I had known it’s a skill that takes many, many years to learn. Yes, it requires natural ability, but it’s also a learned process that requires patience and humility.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
He’s reminded me lately just how faithful He is!

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
Start compiling an email list! I wish, wish, wish I had started fourteen years ago instead of one year ago, LOL
Don’t become a pest by annoying your friends and family. Reach outside of that circle. Find new readers.
Have fun! Don’t sweat the small stuff. J

Beneath the Blackberry Moon is the story of my heart. It’s really one book under three separate titles. The first is the one I give away free to subscribers.

It is set during the Creek War of 1813-14 and is a sweeping romance that absconds with the reader, taking her to a Native American world most Americans don’t know even existed.

Here’s a little about it:
Adela McGirth has never feared her neighbors, the Creek Indians, but a suspicious encounter with a steely eyed warrior shakes her confidence. Her dread soon becomes reality, but no fort is strong enough to hold off a party of warriors who fear nothing but the loss of their ancient ways.

Big Warrior Totka Hadjo, a Red Stick bound by honor to preserve his heritage, enters his toughest battles yet—the fight for love, the invasion of fear, and the inescapable ashes of each. The war was simpler before his enemy became a beautiful face with a gentle warrior’s spirit he cannot resist.

War, captivity, hunger that will not be denied. And a blackberry moon with enough pull to endure the test of time.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Tensaw Settlements, present-day Alabama
Blackberry Moon (June) 1813
From inside the cool, shadowy wood, Totka Lawe squinted into a bright meadow. Its broad sea of undulating bromegrass lay empty. Deceptive. He tuned his senses to the cold fingers of foreboding walking up his spine. His own fingers clenched both the wooden war club tucked into his belt and the lead rope of the packhorse snuffling at his ear.

Go through, or around?

Eight other warriors deliberated beside him, but it was his sister’s husband, Nokose, who would have the final say. Grandmother Sun neared the end of her trek, bringing to a close the delegation’s first day on the return trail to their talwa, Kossati, their Upper Creek village. One more sleep in land occupied by whites, followed by another two in Creek country. Then home.
He swatted a mosquito from his ear and waited for Nokose to speak. Sweat coursed a line from his roached hair over the bare side of his head and down his neck. He shifted his weight to hide his impatience.

With each passing day, their mission grew more burdensome, their cargo more loathsome. The old wound in Totka’s leg throbbed, but he pushed beyond it and centered the load more squarely across his packhorse’s flank. The scents of horseflesh and leather failed to soothe him as he flicked glances through the trees.

This was white man’s land. For a little while longer. Soon, the Red Sticks would engage in war and then the land would be theirs once again.

At a stirring behind them, Totka stroked the sleek upper limb of his unstrung bow. No smelly, cumbersome musket for him. He peered into the murky shrubs. The darkness that descended held more than night. It seethed with intolerance and distrust so thick it could be measured in every narrowed gaze, in every unspoken word.

Totka no longer questioned whether he’d chosen the correct faction. For better or worse, he’d staked his claim with the Red Sticks. The scarlet feather tied to his hair had sealed it.

All he lacked was another battle, another feat of courage or extraordinary achievement, or another few scalps—white or red—to adorn the red pole in Kossati’s council square. Any one of those would bring his name before the council and, if the spirits wished, earn him higher rank.

The mare tossed her head and sidestepped, shoving him into a thorny bush, then swung back in the opposite direction. Feeding off his nervous handling most likely.

As he extricated himself from the shrub, the hem of his long-shirt snagged on a briar and ripped. Singing Grass, his elder sister, would have choice words for him.

“Ho, ho,” he cooed, shadowing the horse’s steps. He stroked her sweaty, quivering shoulder, but she stretched and strained against the tether. Head high, she rolled her eyes, revealing the whites, but Totka held firm.

The animal had tested his patience from sunup, and he anticipated hobbling her and brushing the day’s dust from his leggings.

Interesting. How can readers find you on the Internet?

SHADES OF CHOCOLATE - Cecelia Dowdy - One Free Ebook

Dear Readers, I knew Cecelia from the ACFW email loop. When we had our Minneapolis national conference, we had a giant book signing that stretched down the Mall of America main corridor quite a ways. Cecelia was next to me at the table where I was signing books. The event covered several hours, and we got to know each other there. I’m really pleased to share her new book with you.

Welcome back, Cecelia. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
I’d like to write as many books as I can while searching for people to read my stories. I’ve started promoting my novels to secular readers. I’ve actually found some people who’ve read my books and said they’ve been enlightened by my stories. These readers usually read hot, steamy romances, and they felt it was touching to read a story about characters who turn to God for answers to their troubles.

I’d also love to make a living with my writing someday, Lord willing.

That’s what we all want. Way to go. Tell us a little about your family.
I’ve been married to a wonderful man for twelve years. We have a ten-year-old son. Our son has a black belt in karate, and he’s an honor roll student. He also loves to play video games. Both my husband and my son love sports. While they watch basketball and football games, I’m usually reading a book!

I read a lot of books while James and I are watching the Texas Rangers baseball team on TV. We hardly miss a game, and I get a lot of books read that way. I occasionally write during that time, too. Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
I noticed since I’ve started writing Christian fiction that that is what I mostly read. Yes, I still read secular fiction, but, I read it sparingly.

Me, too. What are you working on right now?
Right now I’m working on Sweet Dreams, Book 3 in The Bakery Romance Series.

What outside interests do you have?
I love to bake! I love baking cookies and cakes. I also enjoy some gardening.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I tend to choose places that are familiar to me. If I’m using a fictional town, I usually set it in Maryland since I’ve lived in Maryland my entire life.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
I’d like to talk to the Apostle Paul. I’ve been amazed and curious about the lives of the early Christians. I’d like to sit and talk to the Apostle Paul, discuss what’s going on in the world today. I’d like to hear what he thinks about the way the church has evolved over the last two thousand years.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
I wish I’d known that I wanted to write novels! I didn’t realize I wanted to be a writer until I was almost thirty years old! If I’d known this earlier, I may have gotten my writing career started earlier.

I wrote my first novel in my forties. What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
Patience. I’m still learning patience. So difficult not to be anxious about certain things, but, I’m working on that with the Lord’s help.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
Go to a writers’ conference and network with other authors. Read all of the books that you possibly can that are within the genre that you are targeting. Write the book – I’ve met so many “writers” that talk about writing, but, they don’t actually write anything.

Tell us about the featured book.
Shades of Chocolate: Toni enjoys making chocolate treats in her bakery. Haunted by her abusive past, she struggles with her faith in God. Her world changes when a handsome stranger arrives, reminiscing about his childhood. Jason Matthews misses his days of working in his family's pastry shop. Estranged from his father, he longs to rediscover the joy and comfort from baking. When Toni's life is threatened, Jason realizes how deeply he cares for her. Can Toni and Jason overcome their pasts and learn to trust one another?

Please give us the first page of the book.
The security guard grinned at Toni, wiping the crumbs away from his mouth. He placed the partially-eaten pink, heart-shaped cupcake on a napkin. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”

She returned his smile, snuggling beneath the winter cape her fiancé Brian had gotten for her last birthday. “Happy Valentine’s Day to you, too.” She took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. “I’m here to see Brian Carter.”

The guard nodded. “Go on up. His admin told me you’d be stopping by for lunch.”

“Thanks.” Toni’s high-heeled shoes tapped against the waxed floor as she strolled toward the elevator. Clutching the handle of her picnic basket, she entered, pressing the button for the third floor. “I’ve got to make it through this lunch.” She closed her eyes, the cool interior of the carpeted elevator bringing her a little comfort. Hopefully, her surprise Valentine’s Day lunch with Brian would give them a chance to talk about the problems they’d been having.

She exited the elevator, strolled to the double oak doors that led to Brian’s office. She slowly opened the door, blinked several times, her heart pounding. What in the world? This had to be a bad dream. Brian clutched his secretary, Gia, in his arms, kissing her! He moaned, opened his eyes, spotted Toni in the doorway. He dropped his arms, his light brown skin reddening.

“Toni—” He started toward her.

She froze, unable to move. She finally backed up, slamming into the wall behind her, her eyes locked with Brian’s. She opened her mouth, but she couldn’t speak. She glanced at Gia, who grinned, her eyes sparkling. Gia’s unbuttoned blouse granted Toni a peek at the lacy pattern of her bra. Finally finding her voice, Toni groaned, closing her eyes, her heart continuing to pound.
She swallowed when Brian approached, the tangy scent of his cologne surrounding her. She’d usually found joy in Brian’s scent, but now, the nauseous odor of his aftershave just made her sick. He reached for her.

“Don’t touch me!”

“Baby, just give me a minute to explain.” His deep voice filled the room, as Toni made her way toward the door. Gia buttoned her blouse, grabbed her pantyhose from the floor and rushed from the office.

The chocolate muffin Toni had eaten an hour ago swirled in her stomach. A sour taste filled her mouth. The picnic basket slipped from her sweaty, shaky hands and fried chicken and chocolate pie exploded from the container onto Brian’s immaculate beige carpet. Her Valentine’s Day card landed on top of the pie. The intermingled scents of chicken and chocolate filled her nose, the food making her stomach cramp. She pressed her fingers to her quivering mouth. A sour taste filled her tongue. Brian approached her, grabbed her arm.

Vomit gushed from her lips, right onto Brian’s fancy leather shoes. He dropped her arm.

Blackness swirled around her, and she blinked. She couldn’t faint, not right now. She needed to give Brian a piece of her mind. She glanced at him. He studied his shoes, refusing to give her any attention. Did he really care more about his shoes than their relationship?

She rushed from the room.

“Toni!”

His voice echoed behind her but she couldn’t stop. Somehow, she finally made it outside to her car, got in, dropping her keys while trying to put them into the ignition. She couldn’t drive, not like this. Her phone buzzed, but she ignored it. Salty tears slid down her cheeks as she gripped her steering wheel.

THE HEARTS WE MEND - Kathryn Springer - One Free Book

Welcome back, Kathryn. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I write contemporary inspirational romance because I’m a huge fan of new beginnings and happy endings. How does the inspirational part fit in? God invited me to be part of His story so I can’t leave Him out of the ones I write!

I love that thought. Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day of your life?
Oh, wow. It’s impossible to choose only one! As a writer, it was opening my email one morning and finding out The Soldier’s Newfound Family made the USA Today Bestseller list. As a wife and mom with grown children who are scattered across the United States, I would have to say it’s any time our entire family is gathered together under the same roof.

How has being published changed your life?
Becoming a published author has definitely forced me to become more disciplined. Sometimes I have to say “no” to things—good things—because I’m on a deadline. It’s also nudged me out of my comfort zone. I didn’t realize that the people who read my books would occasionally invite me to talk about them! Like a lot of writers, I’m an introvert, so accepting speaking engagements used to be a little terrifying (okay, it’s STILL a little terrifying) but I’ve discovered it’s also a lot of fun.

What are you reading right now?
Right now I’m halfway through Cold Shot by Dani Pettrey and my non-fiction read is The Legacy Journey by Dave Ramsey.

What is your current work in progress?
I’m working on the second book in my Castle Falls series for Love Inspired. It’s about three brothers who run an outfitter business in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

What would be your dream vacation?
Remember, you’re asking someone who lives in northern Wisconsin! My dream vacation would have palm trees and sunshine and I wouldn’t have to put on a coat, boots, and mittens before I step outside the door.

How do you choose the settings for your books?
I took to heart the advice every aspiring writer hears at some point along the journey. Write what you know. Most of my books are set in small, Midwestern towns because that’s my world. I can write about the changing seasons and quirky things like “Take Your Tractor to School” Day because I’ve actually witnessed them. In a way, the town becomes almost like another character in the story. . .one I hope that readers will fall in love with, too.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
Ann Voskamp, the author of One Thousand Gifts. Her book changed the way I think about grace and suffering and thanksgiving and how those things link together in a believer’s life.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
A few years ago, I discovered container gardening. We started out with a big garden but it started to produce more guilt than, um, produce (refer to Question 3, “How has being published changed your life!”) so I decided to scale back. Container gardening is great because it’s low maintenance. I can pull weeds while I talk to my kids on the phoneJ

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
I love to write and I know God called me to write, but I still struggle with maintaining balance. There are choices I have to make and I’m constantly asking God for wisdom and guidance because I never want writing to become an idol in my life.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
You can dream about writing, talk about writing, and take online classes to learn the craft of writing but at some point, you have to sit down and WRITE. And even though you’re gifted, called, passionate, etc. about your story doesn’t mean there won’t be days when you’re tempted to quit. Don’t. Because while you’re working on plot and characterization and conflict, you discover that God is working in you and through you and you want to show up for that.

I would also encourage beginning authors to join an organization like ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers). They have tons of resources and the support system and opportunities are amazing. Not to mention that writing can be very isolating and it’s comforting to know there are other weird people out there just like you.

Tell us about the featured book.
After The Dandelion Field came out last year, I got the impression that readers had mixed feelings about Evie Bennett so I decided it was only fair to tell her story, too. Here’s the blurb!
Widowed at the age of twenty-five when her firefighter husband was killed in the line of duty, Evie Bennett has spent the last thirteen years raising their son, Cody, in the tight-knit community of Banister Falls. As the women’s ministry director of her church, Evie encourages women to boldly pursue God’s plan for their future while she is content with her memories of the past. But Evie’s well-ordered life begins to change when she meets Jack Vale.

As Evie gets drawn into Jack’s world—a world that isn’t as safe and predictable as the one she’s worked so hard to create—he challenges her to open her eyes to the problems in the community. . .but will Evie open her heart to love again? Because even though Jack isn’t anything like her late husband, he just might be everything she needs.

Please give us the first page of the book.
“You’re up next, Evie! Then you can check karaoke off your list.”

Evie Bennett had a lot of lists. Karaoke wasn’t on any of them. Neither were bachelorette parties, and yet here she was, watching Raine and Ginevieve Lightly strut around the living room of their trailer, belting out the lyrics to Taylor Swift’s
“Shake it Off.”

Gin had shown up at the door that morning while Evie was bundling Jordan almonds and mints into little bags made of cream-colored tulle. The firefighters at Second Street Station had decided to host an informal get-together for Cody, so Gin thought it would be nice if she and Evie did something special for the bride-to-be too.

Evie had hesitated, wondering how she could possibly squeeze one more thing into a day already packed with last-minute wedding details.

“What did you have in mind?” she’d asked cautiously.

“Oh, the usual.” Gin shrugged. “Texas Hold ’Em. Jell-O shots.”

Five months ago, Evie might have believed her.

Raine bounded over to the karaoke machine, her loose-fitting sundress no longer able to disguise the rounded curve of her belly. “Eighties or golden oldies?” She shot a mischievous grin over her shoulder. “Wait, isn’t that the same thing?”

It was one of those moments. When Evie understood why Cody, her sensitive, serious son, had proposed to this girl.

She just wished they were. . .older.

INFUSION OF LOVE - Darlene Franklin - One Free Ebook

Bio: Best-selling author Darlene Franklin’s greatest claim to fame is that she writes full-time from a nursing home. She is an active member of Oklahoma City Christian Fiction Writers, American Christian Fiction Writers, and the Christian Authors Network. She has written over fifty books and more than 250 devotionals.

Welcome back, Darlene. Let’s do some fun questions first. What song most closely resembles your life?
I don’t know pop songs very well. How about hymns: I feel the truth of “It Is Well with my Soul” in the depths of my soul. Or how about “Amazing Grace”? Both hymns address the sorrows, fears, and dangers I have faced, while pointing me to the Lord.

“It Is Well With My Soul” is one of my favorite hymns, too. Do you have a favorite Bible verse? And why is it a favorite?
I have several and keep discovering more as I am memorizing them. This is one I reviewed today, from Isaiah 65 in The Message. It especially means a lot to me as I am in my senior years, with children and grandchildren, and these promises give me hope for the future, security for my family—and help in the future.
For my people will be as long-lived as trees, my chosen ones will have satisfaction in their work. They won’t work and have nothing come of it, they won’t have children snatched out from under them. For they themselves are plantings blessed by God, with their children and grandchildren likewise God-blessed. Before they call out, I’ll answer. Before they’ve finished speaking, I’ll have heard.

I love the way The Message Bible uses words that everyone can understand. What is the one thing you wish you could go back and change in your life?
I wish I could change me. The older I get, the more I see all the things I did wrong as a mother. But all that’s happened to me, good and bad, made me into the person I am today. And I’m okay with that.

I’ve heard it said, “It’s all about the process,” and it’s through the process that we grow. What is the most important characteristic for a good friend to have?
Someone who knows how to listen and empathize without feeling the need to give me a solution. Unless I ask for it, of course.

So true. What extracurricular activities did you participate in when you were in school?
All nerdy stuff. I was in band and choir. I was also in the Spanish club and the Math club. I managed to get a letter for intramural volleyball.

What is your favorite movie of all times?
So many good ones. I believe I would say Schindler’s List. Many find it a dark, depressing movie. I carried away the fact one person could make a huge difference.

I loved that movie, too. But it’s not a pretty, pleasant movie. Tell us about why you wrote this book.
My publisher (Forget Me Not Romances) was looking for historical novellas with tea and tea parties at the center. My mind flew to this story, which I had originally conceived as part of a Christmas novella set with Barbour. A few years ago, I learned that the Boston Tea Party was only one of several tea events in the colony. I chose to write about the last one, the Greenwich, New Jersey one. As in Boston, several of the participants dressed as Indians. They burned the tea in the town square, where anyone could have found them. That sounds brave to me.

Please give us the first page of the book.
“‘Charity vaunteth not itself.’ Your love does not depend on the size of the house or how many outfits you have to wear.” Reverend Jay, pastor of the First Church of Greenwich, continued preaching through 1 Corinthians 13 for the wedding sermon. A small group of close friends and family sat in the Stouts’ parlor for the ceremony.

Mahala Kent held back a smile from her spot by the bride’s side. Those were brave words to say at a wedding of the heir to the wealthiest man in town. Their preacher’s neutral stance on the recent tea troubles didn’t stem from a lack of courage.

Primrose had eyes for Mahala’s brother, Archie, only. She radiated happiness in her new dress made of green wool. If. No, when—Mahala told herself firmly—her time came, she would prefer brocade. A pale peach or beige would complement her dark hair.

The affianced couple bent their heads toward each other as they listened to the sermon. On Archie’s other side stood Primrose’s brother Jothan. A small smile lit his lips and he wiggled his fingers at Mahala. She almost giggled.

He had a habit of getting her into trouble, although he hadn’t done that for a while. With all the arguments about the Stamp Act, solemn lines on his face had replaced the kindly expression of her childhood friend.

“‘Charity beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.’”

How could a bachelor like St. Paul write such perfect words about love? What would Johan say to that question? He could debate anything. When she glanced at him, his eyes had fixed out the window, as if bored with the ceremony.

Or thinking about the tea shipment sitting in a storehouse in Greenwich’s Market Square. Mahala pushed that thought away. Let tomorrow take care of itself. Life in Greenwich was pleasant, and her days were full. She prayed it would stay that way.

ANGEL IN SHINING ARMOR - Marlene Worrall - One Free Book

Welcome back, Marlene. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
A professional actress since I was nineteen, I lean toward drama and tend to write extreme characters. Like the heroine, an aspiring singer, I was an ambitious actress.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
When I was offering the featured role in a West End musical.

How has being published changed your life?
I spend more time doing book-signings and dreaming up ways of promoting books, which tends to lessen the time of actually writing. Also, folks tend to treat me with greater respect and wonder how I managed to write and publish books.

What are you reading right now?
I just finished War Room by Chris Fabray. I highly recommend it.

I loved the movie that the book is based on. It was number one in the box offices for several weeks last year. What is your current work in progress?
A novel titled Kentucky Cowboy. The book was inspired by my late hubby who was a polo player and horse enthusiast. The novel has a strange history. I finished it, was offered a contract with a publisher if I would make changes quickly. Regrettably, I didn’t. The only copy I had was lost in a freak accident, but the story keeps niggling at me. It’s a different book than it originally was, but I believe it is a much better book.

I’d love to feature that on the blog when it releases. What would be your dream vacation?
Rent a fabulous house overlooking the ocean, and invite some of my friends to join me. The house would probably be in Palm Beach, Sarasota, or maybe Maui, Hawaii. (I don’t ask for much.)

Sounds like a great vacation to me. I’d love to join you and your friends. How do you choose your settings for each book?
They choose me. I knew Ayita High-Eagle lived on an Indian Reservation, so I selected an area I know. I knew she would become a singing sensation in Nashville, so that location found me, also.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
I would spend the evening with the U.S. senator Lindsey Graham. I have long been fascinated by him. He is, arguably, one of the most brilliant political minds of our time. I would learn so much.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
Playing tennis. Power walking by the ocean. Viewing good films. Visiting friends in California.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
Getting up early and staying focused, staying with it.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Attach butt to chair and keep it there.

Tell us about the featured book.
This book has supernatural elements and was given to me by inspiration from God. I did not “cook up” the supernatural, angelic elements in the book; they were “given” to me. Ayita High-Eagle is a beautiful 19-year-old American Indian woman. Abused by her promiscuous Mom, she seeks to end her own life. But God has other plans for her. Soon she moves onto the Circle K ranch with best friend, Marjoi Peterson, and her family. She meets handsome, cynical Valdez Lopez. Sparks fly. But will her burning desire to become a Nashville recording artist thwart their blossoming romance? Can Ayita become the catalyst pointing the way to a spiritual awakening for him─despite his objections? Read this poignant story of love, forgiveness, and challenging issues that must be resolved before Ayita can commit to “Love, Honor, and Obey…”

Please give us the first page of the book.
“I’ll be leaving the Reservation real soon,” Ayita High-Eagle told her mother.

“Good, ‘cause this house is too crowdy for the three of us, and I ain’t kickin’ Wally out longs he brings in a paycheck. No matter how meager it is,” her mother said as she stirred soup in a broad pot on the old stove dominating the cramped kitchen. “One of these days I’m gonna move off the Reservation, too. ‘Soons I find someone who’s gonna support me better than Wally.”

“I told you before, Mother, you don’t have to put up with him. I can get you a job at Joey’s. They’re always looking for good servers.”

“Ya, well I told you, I ain’t interested in workin’ for nobody. We git by on what Wally brings in.”

“But you don’t even like him!” Ayita lamented.

“I told you…I’m stickin’ with him ‘til I git someone better.” Her mother continued stirring and alternately sampling the black bean soup, a steely resolve evident in her tone and manner. She sprinkled in more spices before pouring a generous dose of dark sherry into the soup and taking a long swig of wine from a tumbler.

The pungent aroma wafted through the air, tickling Ayita’s taste buds. “May I sample it?”

 “Help yerself.”

Ayita tasted a large spoonful of the soup.

Her mother smiled, raising her eyebrows. “Well?”

“Delicious.”

Ayita turned her face away from her mother so she wouldn’t see the tears and overwhelming emotions surging inside her.

Today’s the day.
