THE CUTTING EDGE - Ace Collins - One Free Book

Ace and I share the same agent, and we've become acquainted through the Internet. We've yet to meet face to face, but I'm looking forward to that someday.

Welcome back, Ace. Tell us about your salvation experience.
I was raised in the church and in a Christian family that goes back generations, so there was no lighting rod moment. I actually never remember a time when I didn’t believe. I did finally walk that aisle and make it official when I was nine.

You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?
I have never met Brandilyn Collins, even though we share a last name, but have enjoyed her books and blogs, so I’d put her on the list. I find Clive Cussler’s books and life fascinating. Alanna Nash has written biographies about some amazing people, so she would be fun to put in the mix too. Then, as I am a World War II history buff, I’d add in Tom Brokaw into the mix. His “Greatest Generation” is such a superb snapshot of life during WWII. And, if I could invite folks who have already died, then one of mine would drop off the list and Mark Twain would be added.

Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.
I speak when folks ask me. I do about a half dozen talks a year, but as of this time I don’t have a booking agency. As we host a college home group and feed between 30-50 kids at our house each Sunday night and I provide the devotional along with the food, and as I do a lot of lecturing on college campuses, I do have a regular outlet for sharing even though I don’t travel much.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?
I am always finding ways to make a fool of myself, but I suppose one of the most interesting moments happened in front of 1,550 people at the Louise Mandrell Theater. I was appearing with Louise and sharing stories each night. Now she and I are just like brother and sister and do many favors for each other. Normally she ribs me during introductions, but on this night she was very sweet, explaining how much I loved my family and how hard it was to get me to leave home for a week to make appearances at her theater. Her introduction was so kind and warm that I promptly walked out onto the stage and said the first thing on my mind, which was, “Now you see why this is the only woman I would leave my wife for.” Needless to say, it didn’t sound like what I meant it to sound like. Louise was dying laughing, I was turning red and, after I backtracked to fully explain, things went on as they should. Louise has never allowed me to forget that moment. We still laugh about it a couple of times a year.

People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
I first explain the fact that writing is really hard work. It is like running a series of marathons back to back. I also give them the odds against having a book published, which are huge. If that doesn’t discourage them, then I offer to share my writing methods and wish them luck.

Tell us about the featured book.
It is not an easy book to explain in a paragraph, but I will take a shot. Leslie Rhoads may have grown up in a small town, but is on the verge of becoming a supermodel in the Big Apple, when the 24-year-old is chosen to grace the cover of Style magazine and star in the controversial Passion Nights’ perfume ads. But before she can step into the spotlight, Leslie is assaulted by a drug gang and disfigured with a broken scotch bottle. Without her perfect face, she is lost and no amount of surgery can ever make her what she once was. Now trying to hide her face from the world, Leslie encounters more trouble as she seeks to rebuild her life: unrequited love, thoughts of suicide, and her assailant out to finish the job. Little does she know that a young girl named Angel will turn it all around, showing Leslie the joy and potential in life and the fact that love truly is blind.

It is a book that deals with the way we judge our worth by how we look and along the way it deals with some pretty tough issues. Our lead character from Darkness Before Dawn is there to help Leslie work through her issues. The stalking element is pretty scary.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Unbelievable,” Leslie Rhoads sighed.

“Well, it shouldn’t be,” Carlee Middleton shot back, “you’ve worked long enough to get it.”

“Still.”

As Carlee smiled, the younger woman picked a magazine off the desk and walked over to the office’s large window. As the sunlight hit the cover, she once again shook her head. Spotlighted in the golden haze of a New York afternoon, staring back at her from the cover was the vision of female perfection—natural honey blonde hair, a seductive smile framed with sensuous lips, a perfectly turned-up nose, deep, passionate blue eyes, and straight white teeth. The woman in the photograph was the definition of iconic beauty. She had the face women craved, men wanted, and cosmetic surgeons tried to duplicate. She was perfect—well, as perfect as anyone could be.

“I still can’t believe it’s me,” Leslie exclaimed, the sun catching the excited sparkle in her eyes. Glancing across the city spread out below her agent’s fifty-seventh floor office balcony she laughed, “Well, New York, this country girl has finally arrived!”
