TALES FROM THE TEEL RANCH - Monty Moncrief Teel - One Free Book

My husband James and I volunteer at the main campus of our church every other Saturday night. We actually go to services at the North Richland Hills campus, which is closer to our home. One Saturday night, James met a man on the parking lot, where he drives one of the carts, who needed some help with his pickup truck. It was Monty Moncrief Teel. At a later event at church, we spent the evening with Monty, and I found him a very interesting person. So I offered to feature him and his poetry on this blog.

Welcome, Monty. What would you like for our readers to know about you personally?
Monty Moncrief Teel grew up on a ranch in Northeast Texas and his family had a ranch in the Texas Hill Country. Monty has performed his own brand of cowboy and Christian poetry all over “The West.” Monty is a member of Gateway Church and serves in the Fresh Start Ministry.

Tell us about your family.
Monty has two sisters and a brother. He enjoys spending time with family. He was born on his mother’s birthday. He has written a book about his Cowboy and Pioneer Heritage which captures the family’s genealogy. The Moncrief Clan dates back to 12th century Scotland on his mother’s side of the family. Monty plans to go to Scotland this summer with the Clan Moncreiffe Society of North America.

How long have you been writing poetry?
Monty has been writing poetry for about 15 years. He has written three books and has recorded 3 cowboy poetry CDs.

Do you write anything besides cowboy poetry?
Monty also writes Christian poetry. The last chapter of Tales from the Teel Ranch features Christian poems. These poems capture his journey with Christ by his side.

Do you have any other books in the works right now?
No, I am writing and producing individual poems as art work. One of my favorite poems in my book Tales from the Teel Ranch was featured in the February 2008 edition of Western Horseman called “Majestic Texas.” It has been reproduced to fit an 8 X 10 frame. They are available at $5 each.

What kinds of hobbies and leisure activities do you enjoy?
Monty enjoys playing tennis and golf. His passion is growing at Gateway Church and reciting his poetry for fun. He attends rodeos, cowboy gatherings, and western music and poetry festivals. He is Superintendent of the 4-H, FFA, and collegiate Dairy Judging Contest at the Fort Worth Stock Show. He also loves musicals and his favorite is Oklahoma.

Why did you write the featured book?
Monty’s father, Marion Ray Teel was his cowboy hero. Monty dedicated Tales from the Teel Ranch to him. The book captures the best and worst times growing up on a cow calf operation in Texas. Monty thinks it also shares with readers his love for “The West” and the character and values of the cowboy code instilled by his Dad.

What do you want the reader to take away from the book?
Monty wants to share his love for the land and its people through the eyes of a Native Texas son.

Please share one of your poems with us here.

Majestic Texas
By Monty Moncrief Teel © 2007

From the Texas panhandle
To the fertile coastal plains.
From the mountains and the basins
To East Texas sugarcane.

Now Cowboys, Spurs, and Rockets
They call our Texas home.
It’s the land where George Strait and
Red Steagall ranch and roam.

Dale Evans hailed from here, and
Bob Wills is still the king.
We love our country music
And our vintage Western Swing.

With Bowie, Crocket, and Travis
We relive the Alamo.
And then there is Sam Houston
A man we honor so.

I love the sprawling ranches here
And that old rodeo.
So if you live in Texas, just
Put on your boots and go.

My Texas, I salute you
With all your many charms.
I love the state of Texas,
Her cities and her farms.

Fort Worth’s rustic Cowtown
Begins the Wild Wild West,
But of all the Texas greats
The friendships are the best.

A PROMISE KEPT - Robin Lee Hatcher - One Free Book

Bio: Robin Lee Hatcher is known for her heartwarming and emotionally charged stories of faith, courage, and love. A best-selling author, she is the winner of the Christy, the RITA, the Carol, and many other awards, including the prestigious RWA Lifetime Achievement Award. She is the author of 70 novels and novellas with more than five million copies in print. Her latest release, A Promise Kept, is a deeply personal story to Hatcher, based on her own experience of being an alcoholic and the reconciliation God brought to their relationship.

Readers, I first met Robin when she was the keynote speaker at the third American Christian Fiction Writers national conference. I've come to love her and her writing and really look forward to each new book with great anticipation.

As an author, I know it takes a lot of people to birth each book. Who were the people involved in the birthing of this book, and what were their contributions?
The very first person was my awesome editor, Ami McConnell, who was so attuned to my heart's desire that she told me she thought I was supposed to set aside the book I was working on and write A Promise Kept. Without her encouragement, I don't know when I would have gotten around to it.

Second would have to be my agent, Natasha Kern. She has been my champion for over 24 years. She knew all about why I wanted to write this novel and she was there to cheer me on every step of the way.

Third would be my husband, Jerry, because if he hadn't supported me in this particular story based on us, I couldn't have told it with such honesty.

If you teach or speak. What’s coming up on your calendar?
Other than writing deadlines, the next event on my calendar is a workshop I'll be teaching on March 15, 2014, at the Idahope Conference in Meridian, Idaho.

If you had to completely start over in another place, where would you move, and why?
Ireland. Besides all of the obvious reasons (at least obvious to me), I've heard that writers don't have to pay income tax in Ireland. And I think that is a very good reason to go live there. Plus all those lovely Irish accents. And me great-grandmother was Irish, don't you know.

My maternal grandfather, Clarence Brians, was Irish. If you could only tell aspiring novelists one thing, what would it be?
Read, read, read and write, write, write.

You’ve been asked to be in charge of a celebrity cruise. Who would you ask to take part, and why? (AS in what program, singers, etc. [it doesn’t have to be writing related])
Tamera Alexander would be asked to come and lead worship because she has the most amazingly beautiful voice, especially when lifted in songs of praise. Francine Rivers would be asked to come to teach Scripture because I know how deep she goes in her studies of the Word. Liz Curtis Higgs would be asked to be the emcee and make us laugh at every opportunity because she is one of the funniest women I know and I love her heart for encouraging others. Josh Turner would be invited to come be the entertainer because I melt when I hear him sing. Not sure who to ask, but we would need a dance instructor to teach us some good Latin dances to help burn off the calories from all the cruise food.

I’d sign up for that cruise, for sure. Tell us about the featured book.
A Promise Kept opens as Allison Kavanagh arrives at the house her aunt Emma bequeathed to her — a log home in the mountains. Her marriage of more than twenty years has ended in divorce because of her husband’s alcoholism. She was so certain God had promised to save her marriage, but obviously she was wrong. Now she is moving from Boise to Kings Meadow to start life afresh and find a way to heal from her heartbreak.

Like Allison, my marriage ended in divorce because of my husband’s alcoholism. I was devastated because I’d been so convinced God had promised me He would save our marriage. I had believed His promise through many difficult times, but it hadn’t come to pass. I knew God didn’t lie. Therefore, I must have misunderstood.

But God had many things to teach me in the following years, including that He answers prayers in totally unexpected ways and in His own time, not mine. One of those unexpected ways was realized when my husband and I were remarried more than five years later. God used the divorce to save our marriage!

I know this is a very powerful story. I can’t wait until my book arrives. Please give us the first page.
May 2011
This wasn’t the life Allison Kavanagh had imagined for herself, but it was what her life had become. Like it or not, she had to get on with it.

She turned the key in the lock.

Hidden away in the mountains north of Boise, the two-story log house—built many decades before but completely remodeled on the inside—was open and airy with a state-of-the-art kitchen, modern efficiencies throughout, and spectacular views of the rugged Idaho mountains from every window. The place had been left to Allison four years before in her great aunt’s will. Never in her wildest dreams had Allison imagined she would end up living in it one day. Perhaps Aunt Emma had seen the future a little more clearly than she had.

Welcome to your new home.

A lump formed in her throat, but she fought back the tears. She was weary of crying—it was all she’d done for months and months. Sometimes it felt like years and years. Setting her mouth, she dropped her purse onto the small table inside the front door.

Some of her own furniture filled the living room. She was glad of it. Made the place feel a little less foreign to her. Not that it was foreign to her. She’d visited her aunt’s home many times throughout her life, and after it had come into Allison’s possession, it had served as an occasional getaway, a place of peace when life’s storms became too much to handle.

ALL THINGS HIDDEN - Tracie Peterson, Kimberley Woodhouse - One Free Book

Tracie Peterson and I wrote for the Heartsong Presents a long time ago. Then she became the Heartsong acquisition editor who acquired most of my Heartsong books. I learned a lot from her, and we became friends. Then a few years ago, I was privileged to be a part of a writing retreat where both Tracie and Kim were among the 30 or so authors who spent almost a week together. I love both of these women and their amazing writing. To have them together in a book is a real plus.

I know that this is a collaboration. How did this story come about?
Tracie: Kim and I have been friends for a long time and really enjoy talking story. Since Judith Pella gave me a helping hand to get into Bethany House by co-writing with me, I have done this several times with others, and it just seemed to fit that Kim would be one. Kim and I have so many of the same interests and both of us see our writing as a ministry. As we discussed story ideas, Alaska seemed a natural for both of us since Kim had been a missionary there and I had traveled up there many, many times for research on other Alaska books.

Did you find it easy to work together on it?
Tracie: Absolutely. I think what really blessed this project was that Kim and I decided to do Bible study and weekly prayer together. Wow, what a difference that makes. I would encourage it for anyone co-writing.

Kim: Oh my goodness, yes. And just like Tracie said, our Bible study and prayer time together have been amazing and priceless.

How did collaborating with this team impact you?
Tracie: See #2, but I will add that co-writing with Kim and being her good friend can be expensive. I fell in love with her Vitamix and had to have one. I also was eyeing her Kitchen Aide, but that will have to wait unless I can sneak it out of her house on the next visit.

Kim: LOL! I think we have the same effect on each other. We love sharing not only story ideas but ideas about “stuff” as well. One of us will like something and say, “Ooooh, have you tried this...?”

The other impact it had on me is the deep respect for each other. I've always had a ton of respect for Tracie, but it grew exponentially through this project.

What is the hardest thing about writing as a team?
Tracie: Honestly the only thing I’ve ever found hard is the distance. Sure the internet is great and long distance calls and Skype offer us opportunities we never had in the past, but there’s nothing quite like sitting face to face over coffee. I’ve tried to talk Kim into moving to Montana (I’ve talked to God about it too) and she and her family are trying to pray Jim and I to Colorado.

Kim: Exactly what Tracie said: distance. And it just made me miss her more.

What are you reading right now?
Tracie: Warren Wiersbe’s Jesus in the Present Tense and an old Grace Livingston Hill book and re-reading Corrie Ten Boom’s Defeated Enemies and St. Augustine’s City of God (which isn’t at all a walk in the park J)

Kim: Defeated Enemies by Corrie Ten Boom, The Promise by Dan Walsh, Twelve Extraordinary Women by John Macarthur, and I'm also re-reading The Invested Life by Joel Rosenberg and his mentor.

Wow, you two. I can only read a couple of books at one time. How did you choose your characters’ names?
Tracie: I let Kim have this one. I did find some authentic Athabaskan names that we used.

Kim: As we were developing characters, the names came easily. Once you really know the character and their traits, certain names just fit. I also named the hero (Jeremiah) in honor of my husband (Jeremy) because he is my hero every day.

The hero in one of my books is Jeremiah. When I was writing it, James and I were eating a meal when an idea hit me. “I know what Jeremiah is going to do” burst from my lips. James said he didn’t know anyone named Jeremiah. When I told him he was the hero in the book I was writing, his reply was, “Writers think weird.” That has become something of a catch phrase in our house now.

Would you want to work on another book together?
Tracie: I would love to. Kim and I have a way of just fitting together like a glove in our writing. So readers – get your letters off to Bethany House to beg for more books from us!

Kim: Yes! It was phenomenal working together and I learned so much from Tracie.

What do you want to tell us about the book?
Kim: All Things Hidden is about a fascinating time in our country’s history—the settling of the Matanuska Colony in Alaska—but it’s also about change (which is sometimes hard), secrets, and hope. But through it all, God’s grace and love are always there.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Anchorage, Alaska Territory
Fear twisted Gwyn Hillerman’s stomach just like her fingers twisted the delicate handkerchief into a knot. If she wasn’t careful, the fabric would be ruined. Forcing her hands to still, she glanced out the picture window on the southeast side of the large lodge. Wind whipped at the jagged peaks surrounding the small town of Anchorage, the snow whirling around like a dance. But even the rugged beauty of her beloved mountains couldn’t calm her spirit. Usually the daily sight of God’s handiwork cheered her, no matter how hard the wind blew, how low the temperature dropped, or how deep the snow drifted. It was Alaska, after all—the most beautiful place on the planet.

But today was different. A heavy sigh left her lips. How long must they be kept waiting?

She closed her eyes for a moment and took a deep breath. The warm glow from the fireplace couldn’t ease the chill of anxiety. What was this new board? And what would it mean for them?

A MIRACLE OF HOPE - Ruth Reid - One Free Book, Plus Much More

About the author: Ruth Reid is a CBA and ECPA best-selling author of the Heaven on Earth series. She's a full-time pharmacist who resides in Florida with her husband and three children.

Welcome back, Ruth. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
Lord willing, more books!

Tell us a little about your family.
My husband and I met in pharmacy school at Ferris State University. We have three children, Lexie, who is in college, Danny, who recently got his driver’s permit, and Sarah, who is thirteen and my prayer warrior. We also have two dogs. Zyvox, a Weimaraner and Lady Bird, a Jack Russell.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
Yes! I can’t seem to read a book without analyzing it. I think that’s from being involved with a critique group for so many years.

What are you working on right now?
I’m currently working on an Amish Christmas novella and A Woodland Miracle, book 2 in the Amish Wonders series.

What outside interests do you have?
I love photography and I’m learning how to quilt.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I grew up in northern Michigan and love writing about places where I’ve either visited or lived.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
I would like to find out what it was like to step out of a boat in the middle of a storm and walking on water, so I would choose Peter. His journey of faith has always inspired me.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
I wished I had a better understanding of social media. I think it might not have seemed overwhelming if I would have blogged or had a website prior to being published. But just like writing, you have to start somewhere.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
God’s timing is perfect, and He wants to lead us on the path He has placed before us. Sometimes, instead of taking baby steps, I run. Lately, I’ve been reminded that He never leaves my side, but I need to be mindful of the pace.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
1) Seek God and listen for His direction
2) Join a godly critique group
3) Set a realistic word count and write every day.

Tell us about the featured book.
A Miracle of Hope is an Amish romance about a pregnant, out of wedlock, woman who needs a fresh start and a man who needs someone to care for his deaf daughter. Neither of them is thrilled about a marriage of convenience, but they enter into the arrangement with a firm understanding—it isn’t about love—until someone breaks the rules.

Please give us the first page of the book.

A DATE WITH DEATH - Ace Collins - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, Ace. I love your classic car. How did you come up with the idea for this story?
I so enjoyed creating the lead character, Helen Meeker, as a part of the novel The Yellow Packard, and I wanted to get to know her better. As World War II is a ripe field for mystery and adventure, I opted to look for ways to immerse Helen into actual historical events of that time period and let that lead to exciting fictional plots. As she is a beautiful, bright, and stylish woman with an important job these elements also opened the door for romance. With all that in mind, I created a series of ideas that would take her through the war. A Date With Death is the first episode in the series, the second, The Dark Pool, is out as well, and I just finished the third, Blood Brother. I’m going to continue to spin out an episode a month for the rest of the year, and, if it sells well, maybe even beyond 2014.

If you were planning a party with Christian authors of contemporary fiction, what three people would you invite and why?
Brandilyn Collins, Kathy Harris, and Camy Tang. I have visited with each of them via phone and email but never met them in person. Kathy and I have a great deal in common and therefore would have no problem talking about passions for music and pets. I’d love to pick Brandilyn’s brain on where she gets some of her high-octane plots. I have long had a fascination with Asian-American culture and thus Camy could provide me with new insights in that area. It would be an interesting evening.

Yes, it would. Now let’s do that for a party for Christian authors of historical fiction, what three people would you invite and why?
As I love to write in this genre I would pick people who have really been successful in this area and try to find the secrets to building large fan bases. So I’d grab Francine Rivers, Margaret George, and Lorna Seilstand. The fact their writing is varied and different in style and tone would allow me to learn a great deal more about the craft of writing. I will toss in a bonus guest as well … Don Reid. He is writing fascinating fiction after a career as the lead singer of the Statler Brothers.

Many times, people (and other authors) think you have it made with so many books published. What is your most difficult problem with writing at this time in your career?
To be honest … it is harder than ever to find readers and bookstores. We live in a world where magazines, newspapers, and books are fighting for interest. The publishing business is changing and thus figuring out where it is going and how to market is often more mysterious than my novels. So everything has flip-flopped for me. Now I actually spend more time concerned about marketing than I do creating. This series, In The President’s Service, is an attempt to try something new and see if it might win over some new folks to reading books and take marketing in a new direction.

Tell us about the featured book.
A Date With Death is the follow up to A Yellow Packard and is set in the opening days of World War II. The lead, Helen Meeker, works out of the White House for FDR. In this episode of the series, she tries to save an innocent man from execution and is unexpectedly tossed into world of romance and intrigue where things and people are not as they appear. As the plot unfolds, she has to survive by her wits and instincts as death literally lurks around every corner. It is a fun ride and Helen is the dynamic, interesting woman needed to survive what is thrown at her on every page. The cast around her is fun as well.

Please give us the first page of the book.

A field in France
Just past midnight, Private Nigel Andrews lay flat on his stomach, hiding in some tall weeds just beyond a French pasture.

The twenty-seven-year-old Liverpool native was a college graduate. Blond and green-eyed, he was stocky, just a touch over five-eight and an ounce short of 150 pounds. But in this situation, size didn’t matter.

He was tough as shoe leather and hard as iron. In his unit’s boxing tourney, he had whipped men six inches taller and more than fifty pounds heavier. So in spite of his schoolboy appearance, those who knew him never crossed him.

His strength and grit notwithstanding, Andrews had once wanted to become a pastor and was even engaged to a preacher’s daughter he’d met at Hope College. But for the moment those plans had been supplanted by a driving desire to get off of French soil alive. His mother and father had already lost one son; they likely couldn’t survive losing two. They’d even fought his being drafted.

He hated the military and everything about it. So no matter the odds, he vowed he would survive this unholy war. He also vowed to make sure that whatever it took, short of his death, ultimate victory would be realized.

“Where is that blasted plane?”

Andrews turned his attention from the horizon to an obviously frustrated Col. Reggie Fister. Speaking to no one in particular and likely just yapping to defuse his anger, Fister continued to lash out. “It was supposed to be here and ready for takeoff. Blimey! We do our impossible job perfectly, and the Air Force can’t even manage to get the easy part right. Whose side are they on anyway?”

I can’t wait for my copy to get here, so I can read it. How can readers find you on the Internet?

GIMME SHELTER, the movie - My Review

Synopsis
Based on a true story that centers on 16-year-old Agnes “Apple” Bailey (Vanessa Hudgens), GIMME SHELTER uncovers the struggle for survival and the hope of redemption through the harsh realities of life on the streets. As a pregnant teenager, Apple’s journey plummets her into a perilous struggle until finding salvation in a suburban shelter for homeless teens. With provisions of unprecedented comfort, a collective sisterhood connection, and female empowerment, the shelter elevates Apple to break the shackles of her past and inspires her to embrace the future with clarity, maturity and hope not only for herself but her unborn child.

My Review
This is a powerful movie of a story that needs to be told. I viewed it on my laptop, but James and I will go see it on the big screen now that it released yesterday.

Because of the nature of the story, the beginning is graphic and rough, but I didn't find anything gratuitous in the opening. Everything was organic to the story. But because of the harsh reality of it, I wouldn't recommend it for small children.

Even with the realism of the storyline, the story carries a message of hope and redemption. I found the Christian message so skillfully woven into the story through the characters of the hospital chaplain and the woman who ran the shelter to be believable and healing. It wasn't just stuck into the story as some Hollywood so-called Christian films have been. And that is refreshing.

The movie was inspired by one of the Several Sources shelters for unwed mothers. The founder and director Kathy DiFore played the director and parts of the movie was filmed at one of the shelters, with Kathy in the part of the director and some of the actual residents and their babies were in the film. This added a special authenticity to the movie, especially for Vanessa Hudgens, who plays Apple. I've seen her interviewed, and she actually spent a few days living in the shelter.

Gimme Shelter showcases the amazing talents of the Hollywood cast as well. The broad range of emotions tugged at my heart and pulled me into the story.

I highly recommend this movie to Christians everywhere. It will open our eyes to places where we can help and encourage young women, stuck in an ugly situation, and show us how we can shares the hope from Jesus that they need to rise above their circumstances.

DARE TO LOVE AGAIN - Julie Lessman - One Free Book

Readers, I've loved Julie since I first met her at an American Christian Fiction Writers national conference several years ago. And I've loved her writing since I read the first word of the first book in her Daughters of Boston series. She writes books with the kind of passion I'd like to include in mine, but my publishers always delete the best parts. I feel the same way as she does about romantic passion and a passion for God. (You'll read about that in the answers to her questions.

Dare to Love Again is another winner. I've loved all the character in her books, but I think I love the ones in the Heart of San Francisco the best. Her storylines catch my attention, and her characters pull me straight into the story and don't let go until long after I read the last page. This was true in Dare to Love Again. And she paints a tapestry of setting that is true to San Francisco in that time period. You won't want to miss this marvelous read.

BIO: Award-winning author of “The Daughters of Boston” and “Winds of Change” series, Julie Lessman was American Christian Fiction Writers 2009 Debut Author of the Year and voted #1 Romance Author of the year in Family Fiction magazine’s 2012 and 2011 Readers Choice Awards. She has also garnered 17 RWA awards and made Booklist’s 2010 Top 10 Inspirational Fiction. Her book A Light in the Window is an International Digital Awards winner, a 2013 Readers' Crown Award winner, and a 2013 Book Buyers Best Award winner.

Welcome back, Julie. Why did you become an author?
Well, Lena, frankly I got SO sick of the world pushing its amoral agenda in romance novels that I decided to try and write my own where I could push God's agenda instead. My thinking was to promote His precepts with the lure of the same kind of passionate romance that I fell in love with at the age of twelve, when I read Gone With the Wind, which, by the way, is when I started writing A Passion Most Pure. Back then I wrote 150 single-spaced pages of what is today my debut novel, but I didn't finish it till after I turned 50. But … better late than never, eh?

I will admit my books are a tad more passionate than the majority of Inspirational romance in the Christian market today, both romantically and spiritually. And I did this on purpose. You see, I’m the type of woman who loves a great love story. You know—the heart-fluttering, pulse-pounding emotional tug-of-war between a man and a woman that makes romance the #1 genre in the world? It draws me, always has, from the early days of Gone With the Wind. But for me, passion in romance is not enough. Without God and His precepts in the middle, it’s nothing but lust—heat that burns but doesn’t keep you warm. So when I started writing my own novels over 13 years ago, it was primarily because I didn’t want to read secular romance anymore. Unfortunately way back then, I had trouble finding the level of passion I wanted in a Christian romance novel, so I decided to write my own. My intent was to write romantic passion that is more real and relevant to what young girls are exposed to in today’s amoral society, but laced with a spiritual thread that is just as passionate.

Let’s face it—passion is powerful. It can drive a woman into the arms of a man, or a person into the arms of God. In truth, romantic passion gives us a glimpse into the very heart of God. After studying the “Song of Solomon” in the Bible , I’m convinced that the God who created passion and intimacy did so to mirror the intensity of His own love for mankind. It is my belief that romance laced with God’s precepts is also powerful—it can draw, woo, and win advocates to its cause with the stroke of a keyboard. It is my hope that my novels will strikes the balance between romantic and spiritual passion for the broad base of readers searching for its message, and by interweaving the two, bring them into an intimate relationship with the true Author of Romance.

If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?
Oh, gosh, I have no idea! At one time I would have said Christian counselor because I’m a bottom-line kind of person who likes applying God’s Word to people’s problems, then shoring it up with prayer. But since I’ve gotten up in years a wee bit, I don’t seem to have the energy for an occupation like that anymore.

If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?
Jerusalem at the time of Jesus’ ministry because I would LOVE to follow Him around like so many crowds did back then. Then, of course, I would go to Golgotha in a heartbeat on the day that He died. Because if His death has radically changed my life for the better through mere faith, I can’t even imagine the impact of seeing Him carry that cross for me in person.

What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?
Oh, are you kidding? Boston, of course! I know, I know—as an author of two series set in Boston, it’s downright shameful I haven’t been there yet, but I can blame my hubby for that because he refuses to go. Apparently he had a bad business trip there once, and it’s scarred him for life. But, oh … Boston has been a love of mine since I was a little girl watching Walt Disney’s Swamp Fox, which chronicled the Revolutionary War, of which Boston was a huge part. I LOVE the history of that city, especially after researching it while writing the Daughters of Boston series and you know what? I have craved Boston Baked Beans candy and Boston cream pie ever since!

How about a foreign country you hope to visit?
HA! That’s a no-brainer too. Ireland, of course! ;)

I knew that would be your answer to that question. Readers, if you want to know why, read Julie’s Daughter of Boston series. Now Julie, what lesson has the Lord taught you recently?
“Do not fear your weakness,
for it is the stage on which My Power and My Glory
perform most brilliantly.”
-- Jesus Calling by Sarah Young, Dec. 21 Entry

The most recent lesson is from the Scripture above, when God showed me that Jesus' Power and Glory—in the flesh, through the birth of a human infant born in a bed of straw—is the very thing that can and will eradicate all of my fears and yours. Oh, the joy of knowing that my imperfections—and God knows they are many—are obliterated by a God Who loves me—and you—just the way we are!! Talk about “joy to the world”! Because in our weakness He is strong.

So, like the disciple Paul, “I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” And, oh baby, if my weakness equates to God's strength, than I'm bending bars of steel like pretzels ... and bopping them over the devil’s head. :)

I have used Jesus Calling for my devotional several times. And I often give it to someone else as a gift. Tell us about the featured book.
Well, book 2 in the Heart of San Francisco series, DARE TO LOVE AGAIN, released January 1st and tells the story of the second McClare cousin, Allison McClare, a woman who has had her heart broken three times and is determined it will not happen again. She’s seeing red and wielding a stick, a dangerous combination when she meets a crotchety Italian police detective whose temper is as loose as hers. Here’s the jacket blurb for this sweet and funny love story that I will warn you, is the sweetest, least passionate of all my books, which means there are very few kisses, but LOTS of romantic tension! ;)

She’s a sassy socialite burned by love.
He’s a jaded cop burned by the upper class.
When sparks fly … will love catch fire again?

Spunky Allison McClare is determined to be a fearless, independent woman. But when she takes a notion to explore the wild Barbary Coast, she quickly discovers she’s no match for the unsavory characters that haunt the dark streets.

Detective Nick Barone would rather do almost anything than teach this petite socialite self-defense, but it seems he has little choice. Sparks fly every time the two meet until a grudging friendship develops into something deeper. But is he just a fraud like all the rest of the men Allison’s cared for? Or the one man she can dare to love again?

As you know, I read the book as soon as it arrived. Please give us the first page of the book for my blog readers.
Here’s the first page from my galleys, which runs a wee bit longer than the actual printed page:

San Francisco, Summer 1903
Merciful Providence . . . I smell a rat! Allison McClare sniffed with nose in the air, the unmistakable scent of Bay Rum drifting into her empty classroom of the Hand of Hope School. Although not uncommon for an antiquated Victorian house a stone’s throw from the sewers of the Barbary Coast, this smell of “rat” was altogether different and far more frightening. She wrinkled her nose.

The man kind.

“I think you took a wrong turn, lady, high tea is at The Palace.”

“Oh!” Body jolting, she whirled around at the bulletin board, almost inhaling the straight pin in her teeth. She blinked at a tall, disgruntled stranger cocked in the door of her classroom who might have been dangerously attractive if not for the scowl on his face. An unruly strand of dark hair, almost black—like his mood appeared to be—toppled over his forehead beneath a dark Homburg he obviously felt no courtesy to remove. He hiked a thumb toward the front door, his gruff voice a near snarl as he glared through gray-green eyes that seemed to darken by the moment, the color of stormy seas. “I assume that’s your fancy car and driver out front? Well, it needs to move to the back alley, lady, whether you’re here to teach or just out slumming with the poor folks.”

The straight pin in her teeth dropped to the floor along with her jaw. As she gaped, hardly able to comprehend the rudeness of this Neanderthal who’d be better attired in bearskin and club than the charcoal suit coat draped over his shoulder. Rolled sleeves of what might have been a crisp white shirt at one time revealed muscled forearms thick with dark hair like the brainless caveman he appeared to be. It was only two in the afternoon, but already dark bristle shadowed his hard-angled jaw, lending an ominous air to a man who possessed less charm than found on the head of her pin. Her nose scrunched, the smell of “rat” surprisingly strong due to a keen sense of smell and three near misses at the altar. She fought the squirm of a smile over his high starched collar with its off-center tie—loosened as if in protest to fashionable attire he considered a noose ’round his neck.

Like the one I’m envisioning now . . .

He squinted as if she were the intruder instead of him, daring to invade his cave. “What, cat got your tongue?”

Yes, you pinhead . . . a polecat. She glared right back in silence, figuring if she waited long enough, his face would crack . . . something she’d pay good money to see. She almost wished she’d gone home with Mother and Cassie earlier instead of staying later on a Friday the week before they opened their new school. Her gaze flicked to the clock on the wall that indicated her elderly driver Hadley was on time to take her home. And not a moment too soon, if this barbarian was any indication of the rest of her day.

Her silence apparently ruffled his fur because his eyes narrowed, if possible, even more than before as he blasted out a noisy exhale, shaking his head as if she were the one with a pea for a brain. “Great—a rich dame as dumb as she is lost,” he muttered, and every word his insolence had stolen from her lips marched to the tip of her tongue to do battle.

ACROSS THE CHINA SKY - C Hope Flinchbaugh - One Free Ebook

Readers, I met Hope through Linkedin and found we have a lot in common. I'm thrilled to introduce her to you.

Welcome, Hope. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
I sometimes call myself the rejected missionary. My mother is a wonderful storyteller and, as a child, I was deeply moved by my mother’s Child Evangelism Fellowship missionary stories. I loved to meet the missionaries who spoke at our church. My parents often hosted them in our home after services, and I thoroughly enjoyed the table conversation about all their exciting adventures and their passion for souls.

So at the end of the missionary’s message at church, he or she would invariably ask people to come forward if God was calling them to be a missionary. People quietly slipped out of their pews, sometimes tears streaming down their faces, reluctant to surrender. (Who wants to go to Africa and be eaten by head hunters?)

There I stood at my pew praying, “Pick me! Pick me!”

No call. No answer. One time in my adult years God finally spoke to me at the end of one of those altar calls and said, “Sit down, Hope.”

That was plain enough. I sat down. I sat down and began to write about the people I longed to meet on the mission field. What’s odd is that I never really included a missionary in my novels. I write about the indigenous people of China and North Korea, the people I wanted to meet, advocate for, and even emulate. And although I didn’t get to be a missionary, I interviewed countless people who ministered to orphans, widows, and the persecuted Christians in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

In all three of my China novels, including Across the China Sky, I hope the readers can feel my heart through Mei Lin’s love for Jesus and for people to the point that she is willing to lay down her life for him.

I so understand what you’re saying. My husband and I wanted to go to the mission field when the first YWAM Mercy Ship finally set sail. We really wanted to be support staff on the ship. And when we became very close friends with a missionary couple in Mexico, we wanted to go be support staff for them. But God wanted us to be support from the US. And that’s what we’ve done. Oh, we’ve been on missionary trips into Mexico and I was on one to Guatemala, but we’ve prayed, raised money, prayed, befriended, prayed, and helped missionaries all the rest of our lives. One of our dear friends has been serving in China for most of her adult life. What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
Two years ago I wrote a poem that I would only share with my mother. It was ridiculous, hilarious, and totally out of my norm. I didn’t even read it to my husband. I was mortified when God laid it on my heart to READ it over a microphone during my keynote message at the Montrose Christian Writers Conference. My mother has all the sense of humor in my family—not me. I was deliberating between saving face (a Chinese term for totally embarrassing myself) and obeying the leading of the Holy Spirit. I obeyed God.

People were in tears laughing. Many requested the poem afterward. I was relieved they liked it, but even more relieved that the whole ordeal was over. Okay, now you’re wondering about the poem. Here are four stanzas to “whet your whistle”:

This face that you see
Is not what will be
I’m destined for heaven
And eternity

St. Peter’s not standing
With scales at the gate.
Or writing down fat grams
Of all that I ate.

No one will complain,
“My nose is too big!”
Or want hair replacement,
Extender, or wig.

My teeth won’t need whitened,
Filled, or replaced.
That’s how I’ll be smiling
When I see His face!

Well, you get the idea . . .

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
About 10 years ago my mother gave me a box of all my school papers she saved. I surprised to discover a story that I wrote in third grade. At the top I wrote, “I want to write books.”
On the next few pages, I wrote a book complete with pictures that I drew about a dog that was on a raft going down a river in the middle of a terrible storm. I titled it, A Shelter in the Time of Storm.

Until that moment, I honestly didn’t realize that I wanted to write books since third grade!

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
The highest treasure to me in the world is my Bible, of course. I’ve smuggled Bibles into China and watched the delight and tears on the faces of our Chinese brothers as I handed a Bible to brothers and sisters in Christ who never owned a complete Bible before.

I also discovered ancient writings that are said to be written by the first century church called the Odes of Solomon. That little book is so rich and reads much like the psalms of David.

As far as modern works, I most enjoy historical fiction or biographies/autobiographies of men and women who are overcomers within the last century or so. Men and women such as Corrie ten Boom, Lester Sumrall, D.L. Moody, Billy Graham, Hudson Taylor, John and Betty Stam, Heavenly Man, Catherine Booth, Suzanne Wesley, Rolland and Heidi Baker, Dennis and Kathy Balcombe, and Reinhard Bonnke. These men and women are eagles on the earth and their testimonies encourage me greatly.

There are more eagles of faith in the earth today whose lives have not been documented—and I hope to write their fascinating stories for the next generation.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
The Tree of Life. There are still two trees in the garden of our hearts. When we need answers or we need help, we can run to knowledge (information highway) or go to the Tree of Life. Every day I sit beneath that Tree of Life and give my Lord the first hours of our day. It’s a delight to be near Him, to journal my questions, to journal his thoughts and sometimes sketch a picture that comes to mind. And God has a sense of humor—that’s where I was when I got the poem, “The Me that You See” that I shared earlier. In sorrow or joy, laughter or tears, He meets me there.

“I come to the garden alone . . . and He walks with me and He talks with me and He tells me I am His own! And the voice I hear falling on my ear, none other has ever known!” Glory!

I love that hymn. I want it sung at my funeral. How do you choose your characters’ names?
For my first China novel, Daughter of China, I researched many children from China who had died in state-run orphanages in the ’80s and ’90s. I decided to choose a few actual children whose names were posted beside the pictures of starved children (corpses oftentimes) and commemorate their lives by including them in my novels.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Truly my greatest accomplishment is hearing God’s voice. “My sheep hear my voice and the voice of another they do not follow.” It takes discipline and passion to still your soul on a daily basis until you can truly “hear a word behind you saying, this is the way, walk in it.”

My goodness, Hope, I’m finding that we love many of the same things. The verses you’re sharing are also some of my favorites. If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
I remembered when my husband and I got married and I prayed, “Oh, Lord, if I could walk down this aisle like the humble donkey that carried you into Jerusalem, I would be so honored. Hide me so they all can see your glorious beauty!”

What is your favorite food?
Food. Food has started a lot of problems from the Garden of Eden to the manna and quail. It’s started problems with me, too! I try to stay out of it but I keep coming back! Haha! I love seafood and the Irish girl in me gravitates to potatoes in any culinary format.

I made a pot of potato soup for us. That’s what we’re having for lunch today. What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
Time. Writing can be difficult, meticulous work. I began my first novel when I was pregnant with my third child. Monday through Friday I put my babies down for a nap for an hour or two and interviewed people who had been to China over the phone. After we put the babies to bed at night, I went back to my writing to check the interview and glean the material I needed for the novel. And I hadn’t even started writing yet!

I’ll never forget meeting Francine Rivers at Sandy Cove Christian Writers Conference. I talked to her after she spoke and I asked her, “Did you write when your children were small?”

“Oh, yes.”

“How did you do it?”

“I put their toys on the floor in my office, and they played while I wrote.”

I was shocked! “Really?”

She smiled. “Really. It is possible.”

I thought if Francine Rivers can do it, then I can, too. So I learned to glean another hour of writing out of my day when the children were awake. It’s easier now that they’re growing up and moving on with their lives.

Tell us about the featured book.
I was invited to go to China in 2002 and I took my dad with me. It was the best trip of my life! He was thrilled to preach in the underground seminaries and I delighted to interview Chinese Christians from the underground house church movement.

My translator set up a meeting for us in a hotel. All of our meetings had to be done discreetly and without raising attention of the Religious Affairs Bureau or Public Security Bureau Police in China.
I stood outside the hotel room where we would meet and saw a man with a cane walking toward me. My interpreter told me his leg was injured years ago in prison when he refused to submit to Communist pressure to recant his faith.

Inside the hotel room, this man told me the incredible story of how he and his Christian house church leaders were kidnapped and tortured by an evil cult in China called The Eastern Lightning Cult.

He asked me to tell our president and the American people about this cult and warn them. After my dad and I boarded the flight out of Hong Kong to go home, the Lord impressed it upon my heart that his story would be the content of my second novel, and I began writing there on the plane with paper and pen.

Across the China Sky is that story.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Chapter One
Chen Liko tugged at the yoke, signaling the old gray water buffalo to stop. The animal snorted and pointed his horns to the ground.

“That's the last row for today, Old Gray.”

The animal raised his head up and down with pleasure as his young master rubbed him hard on the neck.

Liko pulled a handkerchief from his back pocket and wiped away the sweat that had trickled into his eyebrows. Instinctively, he searched for her. His eyes scanned the watery rice paddies in the distance, then stopped on a figure still bent over in the murky water. Kwan Mei Lin worked tirelessly, as always, thrusting green rice shoots into the mud below the water.

Liko was grateful for her presence in the fields. Any moment of the day he could search for her and draw pleasure just knowing Mei Lin was next to him in the rice paddies of Tanching, far from the awful prison life she endured two years before.

He leaned over and unhooked the lines from the yoke and dropped the heavy wooden plow into the dark soil where it would stay until the next day’s work. Tired but satisfied, he slapped Old Gray on the backside with his stick.

“Back to the shed with you.” Old Gray plodded home beside Liko, the lead rope slackened between them.

Mei Lin stood then and waved at him, sending a flood of warmth through his middle. He waved back and pointed toward her family's cowshed.

The old cowshed was on the hill behind her house, and during spring planting Mei Lin often met him there to help him bed down Old Gray for the night.
