MURDER, MYSTERIES, AND ROMANCE in Tarrytown, Missouri - Alice K Arenz - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, Alice. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about? The easiest thing to say would be that faith in God and His faith in us runs through all my books. Some of the characters are more fervent, while others are lukewarm or search. Honestly, I can’t really pinpoint anything that would truly answer your question. I don’t actually think along those lines as I write—just let the story and characters carry me through.

What other books of yours are coming out soon? Though there are many I WANT to do—sequels to Hiding from Christmas and The Wedding Barter, as well as a third in the Bouncing Grandma Mystery series—nothing is actually scheduled to come out any time soon. I’ve been struggling to write this year, but not because of the pandemic. Family health issues took priority for several months, and it’s taken me some time to get back into the swing of things. I’m trying to complete a book that God placed on my heart years ago—about spousal abuse—and am hoping and praying this is the year it will be finished. Something very different from what I usually write.

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member), who would it be and why? Um, that’s a tough one—especially with this pandemic keeping me away from my family... It would have to be one of the first responders on the front lines—doesn’t matter who or what part they’ve played in the fight against the pandemic, as each and every one of them are vitally important. I would love to sit with one of these brave men and women and thank them for all they’ve done, give them the chance to just BE. No rushing around, no worrying about anything for an evening. A complete and total break away from what they’ve been going through. You know, to offer them comfort and respite as they have given it to so many.

What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why? I’ve always been fascinated by stories of the Underground Railroad, so I’d have to choose Harriet Tubman as my person from history. She embodies a faith in God, bravery, and determination that you can’t help but admire and want to learn more about. And, getting the opportunity to hear it directly from her instead of through historical records would be incredible. The people she helped called her Moses—that, in and of itself, speaks volumes.

How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers? When I finally determined that I was going to reach for my dream of becoming an author, it started with learning all I could through books like Writer’s Digest and many, many of the books they offered through their book club. I went over and over the instructions for submissions to various agents and editors, tried my best to choose carefully, and then crafted the best cover letter, synopsis, and whatever else requested that I could. Still, I ended up with enough rejection letters to paper the walls—and probably the ceilings—in the 1008 sq. ft. house where I lived. But, I didn’t give up. It hurt, was sometimes demoralizing, and made me question what I was doing. Yet in amongst all these thoughts was the one thing that kept me going—I felt deep in my soul that this was the direction God wanted me to go. And in those quiet times when those negative voices were stilled, I heard “Never, ever give up.” All this to say that if you believe this is what God wants for you, then you keep working, keep trying and continue to learn. And, listen to His voice.

Tell us about the featured book. Murder, Mysteries, & Romance in Tarryton, Missouri is a four-book boxed set which contains the full-length books that take place in the fictional Missouri town of Tarryton. The books include The Case of the Bouncing Grandma, The Case of the Mystified M.D. (both cozy mysteries from the Bouncing Grandma Mystery Series), The Wedding Barter (a romance with a twist), and Hiding From Christmas (a fun, light romance). The following is the back cover copy of each book:

THE CASE OF THE BOUNCING GRANDMA

WAS THERE REALLY A FOOT DANGLING OUT OF THAT CARPET?

Fifty-two year old Glory Harper is stuck in a wheelchair with a broken leg, bored, and itching for some excitement. She doesn’t expect it to come in the form of a foot dangling out the back of a carpet as it’s carried into her new neighbor’s house. But Glory’s past “run-ins” with the police makes her latest report more difficult to believe. And, just when she thinks someone’s taking her seriously, Glory realizes Detective Rick Spencer, a Harrison Ford look-alike, appears more interested in her than in her story.

Despite little to no support from family and police, Glory is determined to solve the mystery—racking up laughs for the reader along the way!

THE CASE OF THE BOUNCING GRANDMA was a 2009 Finalist in American Christian Fiction’s Carol Awards in the mystery category.

THE CASE OF THE MYSTIFIED M.D.

FIRST A FOOT, NOW A HAND—WHAT BODY PART IS NEXT?

When her puppy finds a severed hand on a walking trail, it’s obvious to “Bouncing Grandma” Glory Harper that the signet ring belongs to the missing college professor who caused a lot of trouble around town before his disappearance. Despite warnings from her boyfriend, Detective Rick Spencer, to stay out of the investigation, her insatiable desire to solve the mystery of his murder finds her in over her head with a community filled with secrets, blackmail, and arson.

With her sister otherwise engaged, Glory latches onto an unlikely partner and soon feels as though she’s stepped into an episode of the Twilight Zone—where nothing is as it appears, and danger lurks around every corner . . .

THE CASE OF THE MYSTIFIED M.D. was the 2010 winner of American Christian Fiction’s Carol Awards in the mystery category.

THE WEDDING BARTER

NO WEDDING BUDGET? NOT A PROBLEM FOR THESE DETERMINED FRIENDS!

While Amy Lawton awaits her discharge from the Army, she’s left her best friend Riley in charge of arranging “a very small, intimate ceremony with no fanfare” for her and her fiancĂ©. But this childhood friend has something else in mind... she just doesn’t know if it will work.

After presenting her “wedding barter” idea to the groom, his conditional agreement is dependent on whether his best man, Mike Todd agrees to the strange proposal. And, getting the giant of a man on board seems next to impossible. Todd is threatening, overbearing, doesn’t like Riley or her ideas, and gives her an ultimatum: Produce results in three weeks or he takes over.

Todd might be tough, but Riley’s determined to not only succeed in throwing Amy the wedding of her dreams, but to prove Todd wrong. . . about everything.

HIDING FROM CHRISTMAS

No matter how hard she tries, Maddie Kelley can’t seem to fit in at Ornamental, a company founded by her great grandfather and his best friend. Now, after yet another screw-up, she’s been sent into the “enemy’s” camp—two hours away from home for the next two months.

A punishment or a blessing?

Her life is turned upside down when the mundane turns unexpected, and she finally discovers where her heart truly lies.

This is the fourth novel set in the fictional Missouri community of Tarryton. Come visit old friends and make some new ones!

Please give us the first page of the book (text only).
Since there are four books involved in this set, instead of the first page of one, I’m giving you a little slice of each.

The Case of the Bouncing Grandma:

Confined to a wheelchair and bored out of my mind, I found watching the neighbors move in at the end of our cul-de-sac more entertaining than anything on TV. But the storm front that settled over us early this morning managed to take away even this questionable diversion.

Other than the mysterious man with a limp hanging around the moving van in the middle of a downpour early on, things were pretty dull.

Once it stopped raining, I expected the action to pick up, but it didn’t. Even the people who flocked to dead end streets for the sheer joy of driving around the circle at the top stayed away. Several hours had passed since I witnessed any real activity, and what I did observe seemed, well, a little odd.

The Case of the Mystified M.D.:

Thursday, August 11

I inhaled and almost choked from the heat as it seared my throat and lungs. The air was more than humid, it actually fit the meteorologist’s most recent terminology of juicy. The deep blue of the late afternoon sky was so hazy it seemed a bit out of focus. Or maybe that was just the sweat pouring down my forehead.

As I turned toward the sound of a tractor in the nearby field, an enormous horsefly dive-bombed, landing smack between my eyes. Batting at it only seemed to make it angrier. The more I tried to dodge its attempt to take out one of my eyes, the more determined it was to harass me.

All the activity increased the excitement of the puppy at my side. Misty took my strange gyrations to discourage the ardent bug as a new form of play and began barking. But it was her jumping around and tugging on the leash that nearly landed me on the asphalt walkway.

The Wedding Barter:

“You have to look at this!” I passed the pages I’d printed to Natalie, indicating she should give the extra one to Hannah, who’d already begun munching on a crunchy breadstick—one of Marcello’s specialties.

“Wha’s this?” Hannah spoke around the food in her mouth. A trim finger, with hot pink nail polish, covered her lips—probably to keep crumbs from falling out.

“It’s obviously important, Han, or she wouldn’t have asked us to read it.” Nat flounced in her chair, or would have if she’d been wearing anything other than jeans. She just naturally had that attitude—all super girly girl. There was nothing pretentious about her, never had been. Just because she was always “put together,” even when covered with dirt, some people believed she was not only stuck up but stuck on herself. Quite the reverse was true; Nat was an introvert on steroids—unless she knew you well.

Hiding From Christmas:

“You can run, but you can’t hide!” My co-worker’s voice bellowed. “I know you’re back here, Maddie.”

Holly Denton lumbered past me, intent on searching the storage closet on the opposite side of the hallway. All the huffing and puffing should have made me feel guilty. I was, after all, the cause of the extra effort she expended.

I should feel guilty but didn’t. Did that make me a bad person? I hoped not.

Besides, I wasn’t hiding. Long before Holly became the official—in her mind—holiday queen of Ornamental, I’d created this secret little nook in the copy supply room. No one knew about it but me... and Daddy. He’d helped set up the false “wall,” brought in a comfy chair, a reading lamp, and an assortment of books. Of course, that had been a long time ago when I’d needed a place to hang out after school. He would never have guessed I’d still be using it fifteen years later when I was supposed to be working. If he was alive, he’d know right where to look.

But if he were, I’m certain I’d no longer need a secret hideaway.

DARK OF NIGHT - Alice K Arenz - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, Alice. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
Hi, Lena, thanks for having me back on your blog.

I’m always amazed by the results of God’s leading. While I was busy thinking it would be impossible to write a short mystery/romantic suspense, He was encouraging me with bits and pieces of information that quickly hooked me. Dark of Night was a surprise from the title to the ending, and I’m truly grateful He gave me this story.

The horizon? Um, I’ve got a Christmas novella—or longer—due the first of September. God’s given me the title, Hiding From Christmas, and a few character names. I can’t wait to see what comes next!

I love it when He gives us the stories. Tell us a little about your family.
I’m married, have two grown daughters and four grandchildren—two boys, two girls. Oh, and one grand-dog—at least that’s what we call him. We love getting together to play games and visit. That usually involves eating, of course, but I like the visiting and games most.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
I don’t read as much as I’d like because of chronic issues that make it difficult. I used to devour a minimum of three novels a week. I miss those times.

What are you working on right now?
As mentioned earlier, I’m working on a Christmas book—Hiding From Christmas. I don’t know for sure, but the title makes me think it will be a romantic comedy.

What outside interests do you have?
As you’ll see, most of my “outside interests” rely heavily on family. :)

My oldest granddaughter is a very talented musician and I love listening to her. Her latest interest has been in Ragtime, and it’s fascinating to watch her grow and develop as she learns more and more.

My other granddaughter is active in the children’s community theater where she lives, and it’s always a treat to go to one of her performances. Last year, her little brother was also in the play, so that was a lot of fun. Later in the year, their mom performed in the adult theater group.

Since I can’t garden anymore, watching my older daughter take care of hers has become a real joy. I love seeing the different plants and flowers she chooses grow—and how happy it makes her when they thrive.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
The settings are always fictional Missouri towns. A name will pop into my head—totally a God thing—and then my husband and I will search to make sure it doesn’t already exist. It’s usually the second thing I’m “given” in regards to the story.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
The easy answer would be Jesus—but that’s too obvious. :)  Let me see. . . the “historical” part is throwing me. Wow, Lena, this is a tough one! There are so many names swimming around in my head, but not one of them is someone I’d want to spend an entire evening with.

Ok, this is really “out there,” but I’d like to spend an evening with the original depositor(s) of the Oak Island treasure. Strange, but true. I’ve been watching The Curse of Oak Island since it began on the History Channel, and would like to know the answers to the mystery!

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
That it would involve research—which is something I’ve never enjoyed.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
To be thankful for the blessings I have in my life and not bemoan all the things I can no longer do. I start every morning with a prayer thanking God for all He’s given me and try to remember to continue to thank Him throughout the day. It’s hard sometimes—especially when I see a book I might like to read, a picture I’d like to paint, or flowers I’d like to plant for myself. I’m definitely a work in progress.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
1. Learn everything you can about writing—hone your language skills, study punctuation (I’m horrible with commas!), read everything about the art of telling/showing a story, how to research effectively, and READ across the genres to get a handle on things.
2. Learn how to market yourself and your books in today’s world.
3. If this is what you truly believe God is leading you toward, NEVER EVER GIVE UP!

Tell us about the featured book.
Dark of Night is a mystery/romantic suspense. The following tells you more about it.
One-liner:  Where Nightmares Become Reality

Back Cover Blurb:
Determined to get justice for the brutal murders of her parents twenty years ago, Kelsey Carol returns to the scene of the crime—Seaton, Missouri. But what she quickly learns is that every clue brings more questions than answers. And, nightmares really do come true.

Please give us the first page of the book.
“We’ve got to stop meeting like this, Ms. Carol.”

I followed the detective as he weaved through people representing all ages, ethnicities, and walks of life, each of whom had been caught out after curfew. A kind of “controlled” chaos accompanied the din of angry voices and myriad of smells. I preferred the smell of stale perfume and alcohol to that of unwashed bodies, but given the situation...

“Don’t you think an eleven o’clock curfew is a little early for the average person?”

“These aren’t ‘average’ circumstances.” He replied without turning. “You were informed the last time we caught you roaming about—”

“I wasn’t roaming. I was on the roof of the Historical Society—with the key Director Hanson provided for access.”

“After the city-wide curfew.”

“Adult curfews have been deemed unconstitu-”

“And I know Hanson told you,” he interrupted, ignoring me.

“Just so you know, I’d been there since a little before dusk and lost track of the time.”

Well, I for one will look forward to finding out why this person was on that roof so long. How can readers find you on the Internet?
My web site is www.akawriter.com but it’s out of date right now because I’ve lost the computer and program I used to make the site. Perhaps a better place would be to look at my Author Page on Amazon. You can get my bio as well as a complete list and description of all my books.

THE WEDDING BARTER - Alice K Arenz - Two Free Kindle Copies

BIO: Though Alice K. Arenz is known for her cozy mysteries and romantic mystery/suspense novels, the Carol Award winning author has branched out with her newest release, The Wedding Barter, a romance that is both serious and funny.

Arenz is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers. Her first three novels were honored by two finals and one win in ACFW’s Carol Awards: cozy mysteries The Case of the Bouncing Grandma (a 2009 finalist), The Case of the Mystified M.D., (2010 winner), and mystery/suspense Mirrored Image (a 2011 finalist). These novels have been followed by An American Gothic, Portrait of Jenny, and short story, Home Cookin’.

Hi, Lena and Readers! It’s nice to be here.

Welcome back, Alice. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I write what God gives me—it’s the only explanation there is. Yes, I’ve always been fascinated with mystery/suspense, so it seemed a natural genre to write. But my latest, The Wedding Barter, is a romance. Though there is always an element of romance in my books, this one is so completely different—no murders or mayhem.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
I know it’s clichĂ©, but my happiest “days” were when my daughters were born. Close, are the births of my four grandchildren. When I think about them, I get goose bumps and thank God for blessing me with all of them.

How has being published changed your life?
It’s added a different dimension to my life, allowed my imagination to soar and opened up a whole new channel of communication between God and me. That probably sounds odd, but I pray and ask Him for guidance—and try to be patient long enough to “hear” the answer. I remember when I was writing The Case of the Bouncing Grandma and wanted to know how it would end—when it would end! I kept on asking until one night I clearly heard “And then he kissed me.” Nothing about what would lead to that point, but it was enough to make me want to go on. I even put in a hard page break and typed those words. And He was right, that’s exactly how it ended.

What are you reading right now?
Actually, I’m re-reading my Bouncing Grandma Mystery series so that everything is at the forefront of my mind as I start on the third in the series. It’s tentatively called The Case of the Stolen Identity.

What is your current work in progress?
Ah, I got ahead of myself! Stolen Identity will be a cozy mystery like The Case of the Bouncing Grandma and The Case of the Mystified M.D.

What would be your dream vacation?
I’ve always wanted to visit the British Isles—especially Ireland and Scotland.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
The main locations are always fictional—I’ve taken the adage of “write what you know” and used it for the main setting. From that point, the book dictates the rest.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
Wow, I’ve really never thought about this. I’m so family oriented that I rarely think beyond wanting to spend time with them.

Let’s see. . . I would have to say Pat Robertson because five years ago when I couldn’t move from my chair the result of a sudden attack on all my senses, CBN and the 700 Club were there to remind me God was holding my hand, carrying me. Yes, my husband and family were right here and supportive, but there was something about Pat Robertson that spoke to me and made me listen even when my head was screaming, when light and sound assaulted me on more levels than I knew existed. I couldn’t watch other TV programs, couldn’t stand to “over” hear the sounds or the movement. But something I’d never watched before, always passed by. . . spoke to me. So, I choose Pat Robertson.

What a wonderful tersimony. What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
I used to enjoy sewing and painting, but because of problems with my hands I haven’t done those things in years. Well, until a few weeks before this past Christmas. I was trying to come up with a way to give my grandchildren (ages 19-8) a special gift—something they could have the rest of their lives. We’d always gotten them a tree ornament, but with our tight budget, even that would’ve been a stretch. That’s when I came up with the idea to make ornaments.

Chris looked up the directions on how to make homemade clay—flour, salt, water. After he mixed it together, I got out my old cookie cutters and very carefully rolled out the clay. Once they’d baked and cooled—five ornaments for each grandchild—I dug out my acrylic paints for the first time in nineteen years and painted/decorated them, praying God would help my hands to stay working and to keep the pain away. And He did exactly that!

Another wonderful testimony. I love stories of how God has been so present in our lives. What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
Marketing. I don’t have the finances to advertise, so I rely on friends and family to help get the word out. I’ve also been blessed with people like you, Lena, who invite me to be on their blogs.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Stay true to your faith and listen to what God’s telling you. It’s also very important to develop a tough skin. Remember that everyone will have a different opinion and/or advice. Take what they have to say and learn from it and don’t let it discourage you. Pray a lot and take the time to really listen to what God’s saying.

That last part is the most important part. Tell us about the featured book.
Here’s the back cover blurb for The Wedding Barter.

Riley Carr has been best friends with Amy Lawton since they were toddlers.  While Amy awaits her discharge from the Army, Riley's been left in charge of helping to arrange "a very small, intimate ceremony with no fanfare" for Amy and her fiancĂ©. But, Riley has something else in mind.

With the aid of two other friends, Riley presents her “wedding barter” idea to groom, David Herron. He agrees, providing best man, Mike Todd, stays in the loop to keep things from getting out of hand.

It doesn't help that the giant of a man is threatening, overbearing, and just doesn’t seem to like her or her ideas. But, when Todd gives Riley an ultimatum of producing results in three weeks or he’ll take over, she’s determined to prove him wrong. . .in more ways than one.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Hannah, neither introvert nor extrovert, perused both sides of the paper I’d given them, her dark blue eyes wide.

“Is this for real?” She finally asked, stabbing at the page with a hot pink nail.

“As far as I know. Remarkable, huh?”

“Audacious is more like it.”

“Come on, Riley. A bridesmaid auction? Most people I know would rather bow out and risk the loss of a friend than incur such an outrageous expense.” Nat tossed the paper on the table. “The very fact there’s such a lengthy email chain speaks loudly of a hoax. Why on earth would anyone—”

“Did they?” Hannah asked before taking another bite of the breadstick.

I raised an eyebrow in response, realized what she was asking, and shrugged. “Actually have the auction? I don’t know. There’s nothing in the chain beyond the invitation, announcement, or whatever you’d call it. It was scheduled for what—um—a couple months ago? May, wasn’t it?”

Both girls nodded. I was about to say something when our waitress came by to take our orders. Knowing Nat needed to return to work in an hour, I knew we shouldn’t waste anymore time. We all ordered Marcello’s lunch specialty, BBQ beef calzones with the flakiest crust this side of heaven, and iced teas—unsweetened, of course—then went back to our conversation.

Hannah looked through the pages again. “The auction was in May and the wedding, um, is in September. Yesterday, if it was held this year.” Shaking her head, she continued. “You don’t really care about these strangers, do you?”

“This is a joke, right?” Nat narrowed her eyes. “I mean, you’re not thinking of doing an internet search…” She choked on her sip of water. “Our very own dinosaur searching the net for anything has got to be a joke.”

We all laughed. My friends knew me well. Ever since I’d suffered a head injury that left me in a coma for three days, computers and I were barely friends. I rarely used one except for work and email. And, it wasn’t just the loss of my computer skills; all my interests and hobbies suffered because of the accident—my love of reading and my determination to one day further my photography skills. But, this wasn’t the time to think about such things.

“It got me thinking, you know?” I leaned back in my chair and studied my friends. “If someone could devise a plan like that auction, surely we can come up with some ideas to help Amy plan her wedding.”

MIRRORED IMAGE - Alice K Arenz - Free Book

I'm really happy to be interviewing Alice. Her book Case of the Mystified M.D. won the prestigious Carol award at the American Christian Fiction Writers national conference this year. Welcome, Alice. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?

I’m hoping that He will continue to give me stories to write for publication. It’s been a great honor to bring these stories to life – and an even greater honor to know they come from Him.

Tell us a little about your family.

I’ve been blessed with two daughters and four grandchildren – two girls, two boys. They, along with my husband, are my biggest supporters.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?

I don’t read as much as I used to – at least not in the same way. Before it was more consistent, a couple of books a week. Now I’m more likely to read in spurts, in between writing jags.

What are you working on right now?

My next novel, An American Gothic, is a mystery/romantic suspense. The gothic is actually the manuscript the heroine is writing. A paragraph or two of that story begins each chapter, foreshadowing the events in the main story.

Sounds interesting. You must let me know when it's going to be released. What outside interests do you have?

I used to sew a lot and garden, but because of problems with my hands don’t do much of those anymore. I enjoy watching movies at home – and any time I get to spend with my family is a big plus.

How do you choose your settings for each book?

This may sound a little strange, but it would be more accurate to say that the settings choose me. I’m a seat-of-the-pants writer who literally doesn’t know what’s going to happen in my stories in advance. While I was writing The Case of the Mystified M.D., I got a bit frustrated because I wasn’t sure where it was all going. I prayed about this A LOT and finally asked if God couldn’t at least show me the end. I guess I should have been more specific in what I was wanting, though, because what I got was the last sentence. But, you know, that turned out to be all I really needed because every time I sat down to write, that sentence put a song in my head that seemed to lead me from one scene to the next.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?

Jesus would definitely be my first choice, but since that seems so obvious, I’m going to have to say Benjamin Franklin – or one of our other founding fathers. I have always believed each of them were divinely led in the forming of our great nation, and I would like the opportunity to thank them for their faithfulness to God and to the freedoms we have today.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?

How hard it is to get up in front of people and talk about my writing – and that goes for book signings, too. I’m an introverted introvert and have had to learn to go outside my comfort zone. It’s not easy for me, and I pray constantly about each event to get through. But the rewards have been amazing.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?

To lean more on Him and not try to go it alone. I’ve always known this, but, like most people, it’s easy to forget when too many things are going on at once. I think if I can remember that, I’ll be able to budget my time better and not waste so much of it worrying over stuff I can’t do anything about in the first place.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?

Um, that’s a tough one. Listen to what you feel the Lord is telling you to do, follow in the direction He is leading – and if writing is what you feel He wants you to do, keep the faith and don’t give up.

Tell us about the featured book.

Mirrored Image is a mystery/romantic suspense. Here’s the back cover blurb:

Eccentric newspaper columnist Cassandra Chase and by-the-book Detective Jeff McMichaels clash over the murder investigation of Lynette Sandler - a woman who looks eerily like the popular columnist.

The uncanny similarities of the two women's lives and a rash of attacks on Cassie, lead her to the conclusion that she, not Lynette Sandler, was the murderer's original mark.

For McMichaels, the Sandler case becomes more than just a test of his mental acumen. Despite departmental regulations and his own common sense, he finds himself drawn to a woman he was determined to dislike. But can he keep her alive long enough for their relationship to grow?

Sounds intriguing. Please give us the first page of the book.

PROLOGUE
SUNDAY, APRIL 20, 1986, 6:45 P.M.

A dull ache near the center of her back accompanied the gradual return of consciousness. What began as a hot, searing pain was now a nondescript thudding, like an overactive pulse point.

She tried to focus on her surroundings, to move, but her limbs remained frozen to the floor where she had fallen.

A sudden onslaught of memory brought back the shock and horror of the cold steel blade plunging into her flesh. She closed her eyes and fought the vomit rising in her throat. She would not be sick, could not allow such an indignity.

She knew she was dying, could feel her life force drain from her as the blood oozed from the wound in her back. There was no fear of death; it would be a welcome release into the arms of friends waiting on the other side—friends who had not betrayed her.

Betrayal, treachery, and deceit. Ugly words for an even uglier deed that conjured images of the man who accepted thirty pieces of silver to deliver his Lord into the hands of His enemies.

Tears of anger and resentment stung her eyes as rage over the actof disloyalty spurred a primal instinct geared toward survival.

The person who violated her must be punished.
