What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?

In my Resort to Love series, I have taken different themes from scriptures in the Bible and woven them into my stories. For example, Finding Love in Big Sky is a Christmas story, so I use the theme of stars, specifically the Christmas star, to help my heroine overcome her fear. It’s like a bonus Bible study inside a romance novel.

What other books of yours are coming out soon?

The third book of my Resort to Love series, Finding Love in Park City, releases next spring. It’s a very real story for me as the heroine is a single mom healing from an abusive relationship. I felt so vulnerable sending it to my editor, but she said it’s the best one yet.

Also, my first Love Inspired Suspense novel comes out in February. Presumed Dead is about a helicopter pilot presumed dead during a sabotaged military operation, and he plans to let the world think he’s dead as he tracks down the real criminal…until he’s forced to reveal his existence to save the life of his childhood sweetheart.

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?

I’m going to say J.J. Abrams. Not only is he talented and creative, but I saw him at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year as research for a novel, and he is dynamic and charming, so an evening of learning from him would be sure to inspire. And fun.

What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?

Esther. She’s been my hero ever since my mom read me The Picture Bible, and I dressed up like her for Halloween.

Esther has also been a favorite of mine for decades. How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?

I have a four-step plan. It’s designed to help victims overcome trauma, but getting nothing but rejection can be pretty traumatic.

1.  Accept it—it’s easier to live in disbelief, especially when there is negative feedback or criticism

2.  Own it—if the editor didn’t understand or enjoy my manuscript, I’m the only one who can change that

3.  Make a plan—what changes can I make, what can I learn?

4.  Move on—either get back to work on the rejected manuscript or start something new having learned from the experience

PAISLEY SHERIDAN PINNED HER LAST help wanted flyer to the bulletin board between an advertisement for Breakfast with Santa and free ski passes to Military Appreciation Day. Maybe next year she’d have time for holiday fun, but this year she had work to do, and she needed to hire someone to help her do it.

She stepped back and took a deep breath. Was she really ready for this? Did she have what it took to reopen Grandpa’s old ranch? Only one way to find out.

Hopefully she’d get a response to the flyers she’d hung all over town. For now she’d reward her efforts with a sugar-free cream cheese croissant and warm up with a cappuccino. She’d purposefully made The Coffee Cottage her final stop, as Dot and Annabel were sure to want to play “twenty questions.”

“Let’s see it.” Dot clapped her hands and stepped from behind the counter to get a better look at the advertisement. Though the woman was close to Grandpa Johan’s age when he died, she had more energy than Paisley.

Her best friend, Annabel, followed, pink cowboy boots clacking. “It’s very lovely. How many people are you hiring?”

Paisley scrunched her nose. She only had the money for a single employee until the bank loan came through. If that wasn’t enough, maybe she could recruit an intern. “One person at the moment. I need someone to help me host birthday parties and guide sleigh rides while I get ready for the building expansion in the spring.”

Dot squealed. “That sounds like so much fun. Hire me.”

Paisley couldn’t help smiling at the memory of Dot trying to put a saddle on backwards the one time she’d visited the ranch. “You already have a job.”

“Oh, yeah.”

Welcome back, Angela. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?

Oh, I’m a dreamer, so I could take up the whole blog with this answer alone. I’ve already deleted a few paragraphs, so I don’t bore readers. Let me just say three things here.

I was speechless when I found out my debut novel Love Finds You in Sun Valley was being considered for film. With such a possibility, I decided to get my rights back and rerelease the book as the first in a series about all the brothers in the family.(http://www.beliefnet.com/columnists/faithmediaandculture/2012/07/mpi-to-bring-popular-love-finds-you-book-series-to-television.html )

The second novel in the Resort to Love series, Finding Love in Big Sky, Montana, comes out in September. It’s a Christmas story. And writing it made my heart grow like the Grinch’s. I hope it touches my readers just a fraction of the way it touched me.

On the last day of my writing retreat with my friends a couple months ago, I felt God had a verse for me. I opened my Bible randomly and there was a star next to Psalm 102:18. “Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the Lord.” That’s where I’m headed.

Tell us a little about your family.

We have a blended family. My husband’s three kids are out of the house (though they still inspire me with their creativity), and we are raising my three teenagers. We don’t do it perfectly, but we do it better because we are together.

Currently, I’m working on getting my 16-year-old son a passport for a mission trip to Mexico with his youth group this summer, and my 15-year-old is at a special high school for kids who want to go into the medical field. She was just a little too excited to play nurse when my 13-year-old daughter broke her ankle playing her favorite sport at a basketball tournament a few days ago. Last night we went out for Mexican food on “big plates” and laughed until we cried over ridiculous things nobody else would think is funny.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?

In learning to write better, I’ve become pickier and pickier. I won’t finish a book if it doesn’t grab me because there are so many other books I want to read.

What are you working on right now?

I’m writing Finding Love in Park City, Utah. I attended the Sundance Film festival in January to research, which was awesome. This one is going to touch on some issues that I’ve dealt with in my own life, so it will probably be the most real of the three books in the series.

My first romantic suspense novel comes out with Love Inspired Suspense next February. I’ve been working on ideas for the cover and finding the perfect title. (I’m hoping for Playing Dead.) If there are any movie producers reading this, it would also make a great film. ;-)

What outside interests do you have?

I teach fitness classes—mostly yoga right now. And I love photography and scrapbooking. My husband also got a Harley this year, so I’m now a Harley girl. Whatever that means.

How do you choose your settings for each book?

My debut novel was part of the Love Finds You series, which was all about location. I actually set it in Sweet Home, Oregon, originally, because I liked the name of the town and wanted to do a whole home-sweet-home theme. I got my contract then the publisher asked me to move the story to Sun Valley because they already had too many Oregon stories. (Too many awesome authors in Oregon.)

So then I had to make a research trip out to Sun Valley. And it was so fun that researching settings has become a big part of my writing process. I choose settings I would like to visit. Then even if I don’t get to travel to the location (St. Lucia…sigh), I can still go there vicariously through my characters.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?

Joseph. He was a dreamer like me.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?

My mom wrote, so I knew it was going to be hard, which is good and bad. The bad part was that I started out determined to prove myself. But now I know there’s nothing to prove. I’m never going to arrive. I’m just going to do it because I love it. I’ll always have more to learn, and if I touch any lives along then I’ll consider myself blessed.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?

I’ve decided to go through the fruits of the spirit in my Bible. Right now I’m on love. (It’s going to take a while until I reach joy.) I learn something new every day. For example, yesterday’s verse was about how “love and faithfulness go before God.” I pictured it like a processional for a king or the line of limos from when Obama came to Boise. You know God is present and active when you experience love and faithfulness. Such a beautiful image. And also a reminder to notice our own behavior or to be discerning of other people who say they believe in God but you can’t see this fruit in their life.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?

Chase your dreams.

Climb over obstacles.

Get back up when you fall down—preferably while laughing at the realization of how funny you probably looked when flying through the air.

Tapping the brakes to turn off the cruise control in her rented Ford Escape, Emily squinted to read another marker located along Hwy 21. The winding road transitioned from the forested mountains to the dry valley, where the pine trees grew taller as if wearing stilts. This meant she was getting closer to the river and her resort destination.

           

When she was growing up, Dad had always refused to take her to Sun Valley, Idaho. Said he’d rather avoid the snobs who vacationed there. Of course, he was referring to the rich and famous, the actors and actresses. Which ironically she now was. An actress anyway. Never a snob.

           

Should she feel guilty for staying in the swanky lodge? Nah. She needed a good night’s rest before the flurry of filming swept her downstream—literally. Especially after spending a week with Mom in her hometown of Boise.

           

She also needed a bathroom and a hot meal. Spying a rustic restaurant snuggled next to a bend in the river, she pressed harder on the brakes before swinging onto the gravel side road leading to The Point. The log building looked as if it were in need of sprucing up, but by the number of cars parked out front, the food must have made up for any lack of elegance.

           

Emily pulled the compact SUV into what might be considered a parking space and leaned over the passenger’s side to pull her purse from underneath a sweatshirt. Since it was July, she’d only brought summer clothes, but Mom had pretended to be practical for a moment and insisted she take the ugly orange Boise State hoodie. Guess it was always good to be prepared.

           

Behind her, the driver’s side door jerked open with a squeak. The car rocked, and the sun baked her back, though that didn’t keep goose bumps from popping up on her flesh.       

Reactively, she dug one hand into her purse for a can of mace as she whipped around to confront the intruder. Every muscle tensed as possible scenarios tore through her imagination. Hijacker…mugger…crazed fan…

LOVE ON THE RUN - Angela Ruth Strong - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, Angela. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.

At first glance, my main character in False Security is nothing like me. She’s a tough former cop with a temper and trust issues. Though we both have a passion for justice. We both stink at business. And we both have amazing grandmothers who love to buy us purses.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?

It’s a toss-up between riding on the shoulders of a unicyclist and winning a hamster ball race.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?

4th grade when we had to write tall-tales for a class assignment. I would pretend to lose the stories so I would have to write a new one each day. The kids in my carpool would read them aloud on the way home, and we would laugh and laugh.

My favorite one was about a dog that caught bank robbers. Funny I’m still writing about bank robbers today.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.

I prefer my books to be light-hearted and thought-provoking. Which might be why I like children’s books so much. I also prefer contemporary. My apologies to all you amazing sci-fi, fantasy, and Amish authors.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?

Bubble baths.

How do you choose your characters’ names?

Names are one of my favorite things. I try to vary syllables and letters when naming different characters in a story, but it always comes back to intuition. Then I try to give the name meaning, as well.

For example, Laney Winters runs All-Seasons Security. And you find out later in the story that she changed her name to Winters when she moved in with her grandmother as a child. The last part of her life has (figuratively) been a very long winter, and she has to learn trust so that the sun can shine again.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?

Letting go of who I thought I should be.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?

A dolphin.

What is your favorite food?

Homemade bread.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?

Fear of failure. I overcame it by failing. A lot. And becoming stronger because of it.

Laney tilted her head. Did he say another consultant? Who else was in the area? There were tons of providers but not any other consultants that she knew of.

Morgan motioned past her. “Oh, here he is now.”

She pivoted, squinting to make out her competition’s face as he strode toward the building. Or more like strutted. He was one of those guys who wore designer jeans with a sports coat and lots of goo in his hair. He wasn’t a consultant. He was a salesman—more interested in getting paid than actually doing the job.

THE FOOD FIGHT PROFESSIONAL - Angela Ruth Strong - One Free Book

Dear Readers, today we're featuring a children's book that really sounds interesting. I know you'll love meeting and learning about the author.

Welcome, Angela. What has drawn you to writing for children?

I studied journalism and planned to work for a magazine but ended up starting my family earlier than expected and becoming a full-time mom. This meant lots of time in the library for story time and lots of inspiration to write stories of my own.

I mean, when taking my kids to a Tumble Time birthday party and seeing an ad for “senior discounts,” I had to write a rhyming manuscript titled Gymnastics Grandma. And when my daughter used the moves of a quarterback (think rubber ducky under her arm like a football) to avoid getting dressed after a bath, I had to write Naked Baby on the Run. And when my son fell asleep holding onto the dollar bill he made from dumping a cup of water on me at a church picnic, I had to write The Water Fight Professional.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?

I once won a television and Xbox in a hamster ball race. Yes, I was the one running in a giant ball. Though is that quirkier than that time I rode on the shoulders of a unicyclist? I’m not sure.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?

In fourth grade, we had to write tall tales. The kids in my carpool read it aloud on the way home and got the whole car laughing. So I pretended to lose it and have to write another one the next day. And the next day.

My mom was also a writer, so I grew up reading stories of myself in magazines like Women’s World. In high school, I wrote a story and figured I’d send it to a magazine like Mom did. Easiest $100 I ever made. I was hooked. Though it hasn’t always been that easy. Ahem … it wasn’t ever that easy again.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.

I like stories that are both light-hearted and thought-provoking. Usually contemporary. Kids’ books and romantic comedies are my favorites.

What other books have you written, whether published or not?

My debut novel was part of the Love Finds You series. Mine was Love Finds You in Sun Valley, Idaho. Awesome experience to be involved with such a fun line. Might be the only Costco book-signing I ever do.

My short story The Water Fight Professional got picked up by the New York school board and printed in over half a million tests, so I decided to make it into a middle-grade novel. That book released last July followed by The Snowball Fight Professional this winter. Up next are The Food Fight Professional and The Pillow Fight Professional.

Then I wrote a book called Lighten Up about a pastor’s daughter who couldn’t forgive her father for running off with the church secretary until she fell in love with her own pastor. That came out with a small press. I’d hoped to make it a series and actually wrote the second book, but that project is on hold for now.

My agent is currently shopping Romancing the Throne about an American woman who grows up in the West Indies and meets a prince on vacation. They plan to marry until he hires a private investigator to dig up her past and discovers her father to be a fugitive from the United States. To prove her father innocent and regain her position as future royalty, Jacqueline James hires the same PI to go back to Miami with her, never expecting to develop stronger feelings for her knight in shining armor than she has for Prince Charming. Somebody buy this book!!! It’s so fun I want to share it with the world.

I also made it to the final round of the Harlequin “Killer Voices” contest last year with Presumed Dead about the daughter of the Peruvian President whose plane crashed in the Amazon and nobody knows she actually made it to America except for a missionary who recognizes her in a homeless shelter … and the men who want to kill her. The editors said my manuscript didn’t have the right tone for their line, so I’m reworking it to make it longer before I submit to other publishers. And I’m working on Twice Removed to submit to Harlequin next. Hopefully I learned a little something through the first book and won’t get twice rejected.

And last (thank you for making it this far), I have a novella coming out as part of a boxed set with a couple of my Love Inspired author friends next month. False Security is about a former cop who teams up with the man she’d once arrested to prove themselves innocent of an unsolved crime and regain the lives they’d lost. They fall in love, of course, but since they don’t trust each other, she ends up pulling a gun on him and stuff. Tee-hee.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?

I kind of have to divide my life up into moments where I think, moments where I feel, and moments where I simply focus on getting the job done. Otherwise I’m an over-thinking, overemotional slacker.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of, besides family?

And besides winning the hamster ball race? Just kidding. My first instinct is to say it’s winning Idaho Top Author for two years in a row now, but really those awards mean nothing compared to the individual letters I get from readers. Awards are nice, but I do this to touch lives. To be able to do that is a huge honor.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?

I’d be a dolphin, which is funny since I didn’t take swimming lessons until college and I have a snorkel phobia. But there’s never been any other answer for this question.

What is your favorite food?

Homemade bread. Take me out to a steak restaurant and I will fill up on the bread before dinner even arrives. Mmm … I can almost smell the sweet yeast and buttery crust baking right now.

Is it hard to break into the children’s market?

Yep. “You must write for children in the same way as you do for adults, only better." --Maxim Gorky

What advice would you give to an author wanting to do that?

Join Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). Read children’s book—especially in the genre you want to write. Try selling some short stories to magazines first. Attend conferences to meet editors and agents and learn more about the art and the business. Enter contests. And do it because you love it.

The most common question I get asked is about picture books. They are the hardest sell because they are the most expensive to print. You don’t have to have an illustrator, but you do have to understand that your story will be laid out over 32 pages and how your words will flow with the illustrations. Usually keep the manuscript under 1,000 words. In the Christian market, most picture books are written by authors who are successful in other genres first.

Also, DON’T preach. Unless you are writing Sunday school material.

What would you like to tell us about the featured book?

The Food Fight Professional is book #3 in my Fun 4 Hire series for ages 8-12. They don’t have to be read in order, but hopefully reading one will make you want to read them all. And I do mean you—not just your kids. They make a great read-aloud for families. The book releases Pi Day, which is significant to the story (as often schools serve actual pie on this day, which makes for an even bigger food fight). Pi Day is based on the symbol in math that starts out 3.1415, so it is always celebrated on 3/14, but even cooler, this year it will be 3/14/15.

The Food Fight Professional is dear to my heart because I included a couple of adopted brothers from my Sunday school class. Their mom calls them “The Haitian Sensations,” and they are truly sensational. Putting them in this book adds tension since the boys come from a background where food is scarce. It made me think, anyway.
