A LOVE MOST PRECIOUS - Anita Higman - 5 Free Copies

Bio: Anita Higman—an award-winning and bestselling author from Texas—has authored or coauthored fifty-plus books, and she has a BA in the combined fields of speech communication, psychology, and art. A few of Anita’s favorite things are fairytale castles, antiquing, exotic teas, gardening, and laughing with her family and friends! Her latest book, A Love Most Precious, is a collection of devotions inspired from the Book of Ruth in the Bible. Please drop by Anita’s website at anitahigman.com. She would love to hear from you!

Welcome, Anita. What would you like for our readers to know about you personally? Well, I grew up in the country on a farm, but I can’t say it was the idyllic life that many people like to imagine. It was rather difficult at times. But God was with me, and He got me through the hardships and the confusion and the loneliness. I am so grateful to Jesus for the way He sustained me and loved me, and how He brought me through it. The Lord taught me that my past could be used to show more compassion to others, and this has been one way God made something good come from what was not so good.

Tell us about your family. Along with my husband of 42 years, we have raised a wonderful family, and I am enjoying the delights of a grandchild now. I never imagined that being a grandmother could bring me such joy and delight. Yes, another gift from God!

I love our grandchildren, and now we have 9 great-grandchildren who are also precious to us. Have you written other nonfiction books? Even though I have written a number of faith-based novels, I am now mostly writing Christian devotional books for women. Another devotional book that I’ve written is entitled, One Day at a Time, Sweet Jesus!

Do you have any other books in the works right now? Yes, and I am excited and grateful for the work. This new devotional book, which I am working on now, will be released sometime next year.

What kinds of hobbies and leisure activities do you enjoy? Actually, I have a list of favorites things—fairytale castles, antiquing, traveling, exotic teas, gardening, and laughing with my family and friends!

Why did you write the featured book? Ruth is my favorite book of the Bible. The more you read it, the more your heart will become beautifully caught up in God's love for you. One day, when I was listening to some music that was inspired by Ruth’s life, God used that music to inspire me to write this devotional book. I am always amazing at how the Lord moves and works in our lives.

How did you get into writing comedy? This devotional book on Ruth only has bits of lighthearted writing in it, but I have written comedy in a number of my novels.

What do you want the reader to take away from the book? Ruth chose the God of Abraham, and her life unfolded with a series of miracles that changed the course of history. God's plans for Ruth were unexpectedly glorious. And so are His plans for you. I hope my devotional book, A Love Most Precious, inspires you to dig deeply into the Bible so that you, like Ruth, can become yet another soul-shimmering woman of God.

Where on the Internet can the readers find you? Right now, I’m mostly on Instagram. Please drop by to see some of my prayers, which have been created in story-reels. The prayers come out every weekday under anita_higman, and they are called, Real Prayers to Lighten Your Journey. Hope they are a blessing to you!

Thank you, Anita, for sharing this wonderful book with us. I’m eager to start using it.

SUMMER'S LIST - Anita Higman - One Free Book

Dear Readers, here's another Texas Author.

Welcome back, Anita. How did this book come about?
My mother read me fairytales when I was a little girl—my favorite being Cinderella. These whimsical stories had quite an influence on me. People have told me my novels read a little bit like modern fairytales. That might be how Summer’s List came into being—from my delight in adding a few fairytale elements to my stories—such as exploring human weaknesses, innocent characters facing malevolent people, an honorable quest in the form of an adventure list, and of course, a happily-ever-after.

Tell us about the book’s cover and what makes it unique.
My daughter seems to think this is the best cover I’ve ever had on one of my books. Maybe she’s right. I think it’s different because it’s a bright and breezy cover that looks like a summer beach read. I hope you’ll consider taking my characters on vacation with you!

Please explain and differentiate between what’s fact and fiction in the book.
Most of Summer’s List is fiction. However, Laney, the little Chihuahua in the story, was based on a real dog that belonged to my daughter-in-law. Laney was such a blessing to my daughter-in-law, helping her get through a particularly hard crisis in her life. Laney passed away, and Summer’s List is dedicated to the memory of this beloved dog.

How much research did you have to do for this book?
I didn’t have to do a lot of research for this book. At least not as much research as I had to do with my other Moody novel—Winter in Full Bloom—which dealt with identical twins and was partially set in Australia.

What are some of the most interesting things you found about this subject that you weren’t able to use in the story?
I am learning about Cystic Fibrosis because I have a relative who suffers with this terrible disease. I was going to have my hero have a mild form of CF, but in the end, I decided to reserve that character-struggle for a future novel.

What inspired and surprised you while you were writing the book?
I was inspired by Summer’s grandmother because of her growth as a character and her acceptance of God’s will. On the surprise side, I discovered that I can have just as much fun writing male characters as female characters.

What do you hope the reader takes away from the story?
I am hoping readers will be entertained, challenged, and inspired by Summer’s List.

What is the next project you’re working on?
I’m heading out on a new adventure in my writing career. I’m writing young adult books with my daughter, Hillary. I’m very excited about the future, and I hope you will follow along with me on this new journey!

What do you do when you have to get away from the story for a while?
I run errands or read or watch a movie. That all helps me to get recharged so I won’t get burned out or feel like I’ve degenerated into a word-machine. So, refreshment is essential in this creative business.

Please give us the first page of the book.
The engagement ring was stuck—just like her life. Summer glanced toward the heavens and sighed the sigh of love gone awry. Again.

Martin, where are you now, and what would you think of me? Here she was, thirty-three years old, and still floundering in every part of life that mattered. In Martin’s fanciful vernacular, he’d probably say that her life had gone the way of monsters. How true. And so went the mental ramblings of Summer Snow as she continued to twist Elliot’s engagement ring on her finger, trying to pull it off. She looked across the table at her fiancĂ© and said, “Honestly, Elliot, you don’t need a wife. What you need is a good PR person.”

Elliot smoothed a crimp in the linen tablecloth. “You’d think a five-star restaurant could have wrinkle free linens.” He emitted a slow breath that strangled itself into a groan. “Now, no more talk of leaving me, my pearl. You’re going to make the perfect senator’s wife. You’re articulate. You’re beautiful. You can hold a smile for hours.” He grinned. “With a few tweaks, you could be my Summer Eleanor Roosevelt. And with you by my side I now have an eight point lead over my opponent,” he added in his pretend British accent, the one he used when he was kidding around. “Come on. You know I’m joking.”

I can’t wait to see if she gets that ring off. How can readers find you on the Internet?

A QUESTION OF DESTINY - Anita Higman - 10 Free Copies of the Ebook

Welcome back, Anita. As an author, I know it takes a lot of people to birth each book. Who were the people involved in the birthing of this book, and what were their contributions?
Most of the time when I write a novel I do interview people who can help with my research, but I didn’t find that to be true with my novel, A Question of Destiny. It was a different kind of story, in that a great deal of the book came from my imagination. I think my facts are right, but I guess you could say that this book is more dream-born than the others.

If you teach or speak, what’s coming up on your calendar?
I gave a speech this year at the ACFW conference, along with two author friends of mine, but I don’t have anything scheduled now. And that’s okay, since writing and promoting take up a lot of my time. It’s hard to do everything and do it well.

If you had to completely start over in another place, where would you move?
Actually, my husband and are doing that very thing right now. We’re building our retirement home on some acreage in the country, and we’ll be starting over out there. The trees and ravine and creek are beautiful. Our new home is going to be a small fairytale house hidden in the woods. I have been told that my novels read like modern fairytales, so maybe this house will help to inspire me.

If you could only tell aspiring novelists one thing what would it be?
Sorry, this is more than one thing, but my advice would be, “Don’t rush the process. Take your time. Read and learn about the craft, network, and attend conferences. Start a blog, and find your own unique voice. Be faithful to your stories and write every day. If you really have a passion for writing, you won’t find my suggestions to be a chore—but a pleasure!”

You’ve been asked to be in charge of a celebrity cruise. Who would you ask to take part, and why?
I would hire Josh Groban to sing. He has a memorable, moving, and glorious voice. His singing would make a great backdrop for a Mediterranean cruise, don’t you think?

Yes. Sign me up. Tell us about your featured book.
I’d be happy to. It’s basically a rags-to-riches story with a few surprises along the way.

Here’s a short blurb to give you a few more details.
Lucy O’Brien is about to be given ten millions dollars and a chance to live a life she never imagined. Will this new found wealth be Lucy’s undoing, or can she rise above the temptations within high society and choose to become a nobler version of herself? And will the solitary Andrew Whitfield—a man who watches over Lucy as she adapts to her new lifestyle—cause her to close the door on her dreams or be the key that opens the rest of Lucy’s destiny?

Sounds intriguing. Please give us the first page of your book.
Prologue
Multi-millionaire Ian Chalmers leaned closer to the TV screen. What was this? A Houston reporter gripped his mike—his jaw quaking with emotion—as he narrated the blow-by-blow heroics of a young woman who’d come to the aid of an elderly widow by chasing down a thief. And then she’d boldly made a citizen’s arrest, even though the thief pointed a loaded pistol in her face. How extraordinary!

When the news switched over to a commercial, Ian clicked off the TV, but the woman’s face lingered in his mind. Her passion for goodwill was so remarkable, her impromptu speech so compelling, the scene branded itself onto his heart. The young woman beguiled him.

The grandfather clock chimed the late hour as Ian toyed with a diamond-encrusted oil derrick in his hand.

Then a smile teased the corners of his mouth as an epiphany found him. In that twinkling of a moment, he resolved that, because this young woman exhibited such a rare and noble spirit, he would reward her with a share of his wealth. In addition, the woman might make an excellent match for his workaholic assistant, Andrew Whitfield. The plan had to be inspired. He could already see it playing out.

Yes, the beneficiary of a portion of his great wealth would be the brave young woman on the news—Miss Lucy O’Brien.

A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY - Anita Higman - One Free Book on this Blog, Plus Much More

Welcome back, Anita. I love your picture. You just get younger looking all the time. How did you come up with the idea for this story?
The idea for A Marriage in Middlebury came from my absolute love of tearooms in Texas. More than a decade ago I met a woman named Linda Becker who opened a tearoom in the Houston suburbs called Tea for Two. Her eatery and gift shop did so well she opened a second shop. Throughout the years, I’ve enjoyed her wonderful tearoom fare as well as the quaint ambiance. Linda’s tearoom isn’t just a cafĂ© — it’s a gathering place for friends, a place to eat home-cooked food, and a place so cozy you don’t want to leave. As a writer, I thought it might be fun to create a heroine who owns a tearoom similar to Linda’s and set her shop in a small town on the gulf coast of Texas. So, that’s how the novel A Marriage in Middlebury was born.

If you were planning a party with Christian authors of contemporary fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
I’d invite Janice Thompson, Kristin Billerbeck, Rene Gutteridge, Bonnie S. Calhoun, Jenny B. Jones, and Sandra D. Bricker. All of these authors have a great sense of humor, so it would be a fun and laughter-filled party.

Yes, it would. I’d love to peek in on that party. Now let’s do that for a party for Christian authors of historical fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
DiAnn Mills, Lena Nelson Dooley, Kathleen Y’Barbo Miller, Debby Mayne, Tiff Stockton, and Lisa Ludwig. I know all these women, and they are fascinating to visit with. The party would be a marvelous success.

Oh, goody. I love all these women, too. Many times, people (and other authors) think you have it made with so many books published. What is your most difficult problem with writing at this time in your career?
Keeping everything fresh. Readers want new plots and characters, not stories that all seem similar. And who can blame them? That’s what I want as a reader, too. But since that goal is easier said than done, I have to work hard at keeping every novel fresh and new.

I so understand that, Anita. Tell us about the featured book.
A Marriage in Middlebury is lighter fare than my other new release, Winter in Full Bloom. This latest story is set in a small town in Texas, and it’s about the complex, quirky, and sometimes prickly interworkings of the folks who frequent the local tearoom in Middlebury. I hope readers find it to be a fun ride.

I loved Winter in Full Bloom. I know I'll love this book, too. Please give us the first page of the book.
Charlotte Rose Hill always said that a good tearoom should be a gathering place where customers were like family, troubles melted like butter on hot scones, and homemade was a given. Of course, it was also the place where the local grapevine got its bloom. As well as its blush.

Charlotte yoo-hooed to her cook, “Remember, use a light touch folding those capers into the chicken salad, Lil. Think of them like lovers whose hearts you can’t bear to break.”

One of the younger waitresses, Eliza, pulled Charlotte to the side and said in a blustery whisper, “Got two problems already. Our jolly old elf, Mr. LaGrange, is hiding by the fireplace again, and he’s packing a flask of something that he keeps pouring into his tea. Man, you could fuel a flame with that breath of his.”

Oh, I can feel the quirkiness already. How can readers find you on the Internet?

WINTER IN FULL BLOOM - Anita Higman - One Free Book, Plus Much More

Bio:
Best-selling and award-winning author, Anita Higman, has over thirty books published (several coauthored) for adults and children. She's been a Barnes & Noble "Author of the Month" for Houston and has a BA degree, combining speech communication, psychology, and art. Anita loves good movies, exotic teas, and brunch with her friends.

Tell us about your salvation experience.I became a Christian when I was a little girl. I attended church all my years growing up, and then attended a Christian college. My life’s goal is to serve Christ in my writing and in all that I do. It’s not always easy to do that in this fallen world, but it’s the only way to live.

You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?
I’d love to invite authors B.J. Hoff, Tosca Lee, Lynn Austin and Allison Pittman. I’d really enjoy chatting with them about their wonderful writing.

Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.
I speak occasionally when I’m asked, but I don’t really have an ongoing speaking ministry.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?
Honestly, I have so many humiliating incidents in my life I don’t really know where to begin! I even thought of writing a book entitled, The Stupid Stuff I’ve Done. Perhaps there are enough stories for several volumes. Okay, I’ll give you one example. Some months ago I was waving to a neighborhood girl across the street, tripped, and fell. And then I just sort of flopped around in pain on the driveway, looking, I’m sure, like a beached whale. Later my face swelled up monster-huge (I had my husband take a photo, which I will not include here) and my skin turned a rather unflattering assortment of purplish hues. How did I handle it? I bawled like a baby when I entered the ER, but now I’ve been telling the story as a humorous tale of woe.

People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
In the past, I used to tell people how incredibly hard it is to write a book and get it published, but that was so discouraging that I gave up on that brutally honest angle. Since then, I’ve tried to find a balance between encouraging them to follow their dreams and facing the realities of the business.

Tell us about the featured book.
Winter in Full Bloom is about a woman who travels to Australia to find her sister, but in the end finds much more than she ever imagined or hoped for.

But here’s the formal blurb:
Lily Winter’s wings are folded so tightly around her daughter that when empty nest arrives, she feels she can no longer fly. But Lily’s lonely, widowed life changes in a heartbeat when she goes to visit a woman who is almost a stranger to her—a woman who also happens to be her mother. During their fiery reunion, her mother reveals a dark family secret that she’d been hiding for decades—Lily has an identical twin sister who was put up for adoption when they were babies. Without looking back, Lily embarks on a quest to find her sister, which takes her all the way to Melbourne, Australia. But her journey becomes a circle that leads her back home to reconciliation and to the one dream she no longer imagined possible—the chance to fall in love again.

I’ve read the book, and it’s a wonderful read. Please give us the first page of the book for my readers.
I sat on a 747, trying to talk myself out of a panic attack.

The jet still sat on the tarmac, but already I could imagine—in electrifying detail—the fiery crash and then the watery pull into the briny depths of the Pacific Ocean. Lord, have mercy. What had I been thinking?

Fool that I was, I’d left the sanctuary of my own home, which was safe, and hygienically clean, I might add, to board this death trap. Too late now. I’d taken a leave of absence from work, stopped the mail, given all my indoor plants to my neighbor, and said a dozen goodbyes to my daughter, Julie. The trip was set in stone—the igneous kind that the geologists liked to talk about at work.

While I sat there sweating, my mind got out its magnifying glass to examine my inner motives. All in all, the journey had a grab bag full of miseries attached to it. For me, getting on the plane proved that the empty nest had driven me over the edge like the biblical herd of pigs. Since my Julie had left the house, was I trying to find a person to fill that void ... that vacant place at the table ... the perpetual silence of the house and the clocks, ticking away the rest of my tedious life? Probably. And yet finding my sister in Australia would be no less than wonderful, whether Julie was at home or not.

I looked out the small plane window at the heavens with my anxious puppy dog eyes and could almost hear the Almighty chuckling. Yes, I know, God. I must keep You entertained.

TEXAS WILDFLOWERS - Anita Higman - 5 Free Books

Welcome back, Anita. Tell us a bit about Texas Wildflowers.
Texas Wildflowers is a 4-in-1 novella collection through Barbour Publishing. Each novella is set in an exotic location in Texas. They are lighthearted romances, and they’re all tied together with the four McBride sisters.

Which of the four novellas was the most fun to write?
They were each fun to write in their own way, but my favorite character was Lily, the counselor, in Forget Me Not Lily. She was quirky and fun, relatable and loveable. At least that’s what I hope readers will feel.

Was it hard to write four separate stories and keep them fresh?
That task was very hard, because it is so easy to repeat plot elements and character traits and bits of dialogue. I had to constantly check myself to make sure the stories and characters were as unique as they could be.

All these novellas are set in Texas. Are the towns and parks real?
Yes, in fact one of the novellas is set in Big Bend National Park, where my husband and I went on vacation. So, when you read about the characters on certain trails, they’re real, and we hiked them!

Did you have a favorite book when you were a child?
I loved fairytales. Cinderella was my favorite.

Do you have a vacation spot you’d love to visit?
I’m dreaming of Ireland. My husband and I plan to travel there next summer. Can’t wait! Then I’m going to use the emerald isle as a setting in one of my novels.

How long have you known you wanted to be a writer?
When I was very young (I don’t remember my age) I started working on a novel about a man from Mars who wanted to go to college in New York. I never finished that novel, but it left an impression on me. I knew deep down that telling stories was my dream, even though I didn’t get around to fulfilling it until I was in my thirties.

When readers finish the last page of Texas Wildflowers, what do you want them to come away with?
I would love for them to be inspired, challenged, and entertained. If I accomplished even one of those things I would feel my writing time wasn’t wasted.

What are 5 things that your readers might not know about you?
  1. While I was in college I tried working in a pillow factory. I was terrible at it. I got so weary with the repetition I started yakking with the woman next to me. We got reprimanded over and over until I quit. I discovered one thing from that college job—talking is something I excel at.
  2. I once won a hog-calling contest at a banquet. I was not embarrassed, but I should have been.
  3. I have a bird phobia, and yet I love birds! (That is, from a distance.) My house is filled with the fake kind—prints on the walls, statues, and general bird doodads. Go figure.
  4. I keep some interesting treasures near me when I write—a wooden jewelry box my son made me when he was in school, a candle from the 1960s, a hat once owned by a famous mystery writer, the inner parts of a music box, a birthday card that plays “The Twilight Zone” theme song, and an old family toy helicopter that says, “Going up.”
  5. Thirty-four years ago I rappelled off a cliff alongside the man I was dating. We kissed in mid-air while dangling off that cliff. I ended up marrying that man, and we've celebrated our 33rd wedding anniversary!
Sounds like fun, but I’m glad my romantic adventures weren’t that dangerous. Where do all your ideas come from?
Ideas flood in from everywhere—while I’m running errands, or chatting with a friend, or drifting off to sleep. I have pieces of paper all over the place with scribbles about book ideas and characters and titles. Sometimes I can’t read my notes later. I need a full-time assistant to help me stay organized. Any volunteers?

I know what you mean. I need one, too. Wish I could afford one. Where can your readers connect with you online?

WHERE GOD FINDS YOU - Anita Higman - Ten Free Books

Today is a banner day for you, Readers. We have two interviews. Gail Sattler's interview is for a novel. Be sure to keep reading when you finish this post. Anita is the author of our nonfiction book today. She's another of my dear writing friends.

Welcome, Anita. What would you like for our readers to know about you personally?
I love God. I love my family. And I love to write. In that order. But writing has never come easily to me. I’ve always had to work hard at it. And success has come slowly too. But I’m grateful to be able to share my work with readers.

Tell us about your family.
Both my kids have graduated from college and have married. My son, Scott, works in the oil business, and my daughter, Hillary, works as an assistant to a youth minister. My daughter is a wonderful writer, and we’re coauthoring a devotional book that will come out this year. Needless to say, I’m very proud of both my kids.

Have you written other nonfiction books?
I’ve been writing for almost thirty years, and I have thirty-two books published. Some of those books through the years have been nonfiction, but now I write mostly novels with an occasional nonfiction release. But Where God Finds You was a special book to write. Each devotion is infused with Biblical fiction, and as far as I know there’s nothing on the market like it.

Do you have any other books in the works right now? Yes, I’m working on a novel as well as a devotional book. What kinds of hobbies and leisure activities do you enjoy? I love gardening, decorating, and poking around antique shops. Also, I’ve been collecting tea dishes for years. Sometimes I have my gal friends over for brunches, and I bring out all my finery.

Why did you write the featured book?
That is a good question. At first I didn’t want to write it. I knew writing a devotional book with Biblical fiction would not be an easy task. Also, I’m not a Biblical scholar, so at first I was overwhelmed, knowing how much research it would take to write a book of this kind. In fact, I said no to the editor who’d asked me to take on this project. But then he asked me to pray about my decision. That weekend I did pray about it, and felt strongly that I was meant to write this book. I may not have a degree in theology, but I did want to be obedient to God. Writing this devotional book, Where God Finds You, turned out to be an amazing experience. I have never felt so close to God as I did when I was writing this book.

What do you want the reader to take away from the book?
My hope is that people will enjoy discovering how relevant the Bible stories are to our lives today. I wanted to bring the characters to life and show that these ancient people were very much like us with similar hurts and tragedies, hopes and transgressions, joys and triumphs. Even though the culture was dramatically different, our hearts are the same. Those famous Bible folk needed God back then just as we need him in our daily lives right now.

A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS - Anita Higman - 4 Free Books

Welcome, Anita. What inspired you to incorporate Jim Crow laws and segregation into your book?
Even though A Merry Little Christmas is really a love story, I felt it needed some additional conflict, and some of the racial struggles of the 60s seemed to be the right choice for this particular plot. I grew up in the 60s, and I was always interested in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. In some ways I feel I’ve waited my whole life to write this book. It came easily to me in that it’s been percolating in my imagination for a long time, but it was also hard to write because I had to consider more deeply the injustices of that era. Even though it sounds like a clichĂ©, A Merry Little Christmas truly was the book of my heart.

The farm scenes seem pretty realistic. Did you grow up in the country?
I did. While the small towns in the book are totally fictitious I did grow up on a wheat, cattle, pig, and chicken farm in western Oklahoma, and it was pretty much identical to the one in the novel. If the farm scenes seem realistic it’s because I got to know farm life quite well before I moved off to college at eighteen.

Franny and Charlie come from very different backgrounds, but are both looking for something very different from the way they've grown up. Do you think as humans, we all just have a "grass is always greener on the other side" mentality?
Yes, that is a human frailty that is easy to succumb to, and I’ve been guilty of it as well. But God is good about reminding me that he’s placed me on my own unique life-road, and it may have little to do with anyone else’s journey. Besides, in many cases when we get a closer look at someone else’s “lush green grass” it usually turns out to be turf.

Do you think that sometimes we don't pray for what we want because we are afraid of getting what we pray for?
Perhaps that’s true, which would explain why Franny is equally nervous and excited about the sudden answer to her prayers.

Was there a reason you added the themes of Christmas and music to the story?
My editor asked me to add those elements, and it was a blessing, since Christmas is my favorite time of year, and I love music. Also, female readers in general love novels that are set during the holidays, and I’m hoping the music adds a cozy feel to the overall Christmas theme.

What is your favorite Christmas song?
“The Holly and the Ivy.” The song has a melancholy feel to it, but it’s also beautifully sweet. I love the Currier and Ives style pictures my imagination conjures up when I’m listening to it.

What is your favorite Christmas tradition?
I love to have my gal friends over for brunch around Christmastime. I have been collecting tea dishes for many years, and so when I do a brunch, I go all out. Women are usually in a service mode most of their lives so when they come to my house I want them to feel wonderfully pampered. And by the time they leave, I hope their hearts are a little merrier and they feel we’ve celebrated Christmas well!

Is Franny's character based on any real life person?
Franny is like me in some ways, but she has a lot more courage than I have and more laughter in her heart. So, really, I want to be Franny when I grow up.

Does the song "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" have a special significance to you?
The song makes me swoon it’s so romantic and lovely. It makes me think of being snowed-in with the man I love. Of course, that scene also needs a mountain cabin with a crackling fire and two mugs of wassail.

You have written everything from romance to suspense/thrillers to nonfiction. What is your favorite genre to write?
I love inspirational romance. There’s just nothing else like it for writing and reading. It naturally makes you want to curl up on an overstuffed couch and read the day away.

Thank you, Anita, for sharing this Christmas book with us, and thank you for offering so many free books to give away.

Readers, if you don't win and want to buy a copy, you can click on the cover on my left sidebar to take you straight to a place to buy the book both in ebook format and in print. Of course, it would make a good Christmas gift.

LOVE FINDS YOU UNDER THE MISTLETOE - Irene Brand, Anita Higman - 2 Free Books

Readers, I've read this book, and you'll love it.

Welcome back, Irene. How did your story for the collection come about?

Originally, I wrote the story as a full length book. The editors decided that my story about Mistletoe, Kentucky, and one by Anita Higman with a Noel, Missouri, setting would be suitable for a test-run to see if readers were open to a series of Christmas novellas.

What are you reading right now?

I’m reading an anthology, Ozark Weddings, written by Anita Higman and Janice Thompson. I’m also reading an “old” title, The Ivy Tree, by Mary Stewart.

What other books have you written, whether published or not?

I have 46 titles in print (this doesn’t include reprints). These include historical, contemporary, some suspense titles. As for unpublished books, I probably have as many partial or completed manuscripts unpublished as I have published books. I don’t have a listing of all those titles.

What is the hardest thing about writing a novella collection?

Making one word take the place of two or three words. To tell a full story in a limited amount of space. When the two stories were connected, I had to be sure, the few times I referred to Anita’s plot, that it was compatible with what she’d written.

How did collaborating with this team impact you?

It’s always a challenge to write as a team; however, Anita and I worked well together, keeping in touch by e-mail and telephone. We both considered the other’s viewpoints, and our individual stories were strengthened by input from the other. We respected the work ethic of the other and became long distance friends.

Anita is a friend of mine, too. How do you choose your characters’ names?

I keep a running list of names I’ve used in other books, so as not to repeat the main characters’ names. I never use the name of an acquaintance I don’t respect, unless it’s the villain’s name. When writing historical books, I check the internet for listing of names used in that particular time period.

What did you want the reader to take away from your story?

That God-given love is something to accept and cherish in spite of extenuating circumstances that seem to endanger that love.

Are you a member of American Christian Fiction Writers? If so, why?

Yes, I have been a member for several years. The conferences offer valuable learning and fellowship experiences. It’s a good organization to keep in touch with others who are like-minded.

What is the best piece of advice you received as an author?

Two slogans that I have prominently displayed in my office. “Footprints in the sands of time are not made sitting down,” and “Success isn’t given to the talented, it’s taken by those who struggle, sacrifice, and reach for it.”

Where can my readers find you on the Internet?

http://www.irenebrand.com/

Welcome back to my blog, Anita. How did your story for the collection come about?

My novels are more character driven, and so my characters tend to move the story along. The idea for Once Upon a Christmas Eve may have started with my interest in the fairy archetype. I loved the movies Cold Comfort Farm and Chocolat for that very reason. There was something enchanting about those two heroines as they whirled around, fixing people’s lives. I gave my main character, Holly Goodnight, some similar fanciful qualities.

What are you reading right now?

Right now I’m reading, A Circle of Quiet by Madeleine L’Engle. It’s been interesting to read about her writing journey, her struggles, and her triumphs.

What other books have you written, whether published or not?

I have written 26 books in a potpourri of genres. Some of my books have been one-act plays, books for kids, inspirational nonfiction, and gift books. But for the last seven years I’ve concentrated on inspirational novels for women, and this is where I want to stay as a writer. Well, that is, if readers keep buying my books.

What is the hardest thing about writing a part of a novella collection?

I didn’t find the process difficult at all. Irene and I had fun tying our two stories together.

How did collaborating with this team impact you?

As I mentioned, it all worked out well. Irene Brand is not only a good writer, but she’s also easy to get along with. So, with all her positive attributes, collaboration was a delightful experience.

How do you choose your characters’ names?

Sometimes I spend a lot of time choosing my character’s names, especially the main character. In the case of this novella, Once Upon a Christmas Eve, I came up with the name Holly Goodnight, and I think it fits the heroine perfectly. I hope readers think so too.

What did you want the reader to take away from your story?

I want people to be uplifted by the story, of course, but my novella is also a romantic comedy, so I hope readers will be entertained too. I want them to walk away and think, “I really like that Holly Goodnight. Maybe I’ll invite her over for a Christmas brunch!”

Are you a member of American Christian Fiction Writers? If so, why?

I joined ACFW some years ago, and it has been worth every penny of the membership fee. I have grown as a writer because of the valuable input I’ve received on their online loop as well as from the annual conferences.

What is the best piece of advice you received as an author?

Write what you know about and keep at it. That advice came to me decades ago from the famous playwright, Horton Foote.

Where can my readers find you on the Internet?

I’m at http://www.anitahigman.com/. I would love for you to drop by. I have a book trailer on my site and a free ebook with Christmas thoughts, recipes, favorite family memories, and traditions. I hope you and your family have a joy-filled Christmas!

Thank you, Irene and Anita, for this holiday visit.

OZARK WEDDINGS - Anita Higman & Janice Hanna Thompson - Free Book

I'm interviewing two of my friends to day. Welcome, Anita and Janice. Your Barbour Heartsong 3-in-1 collection is entitled, Ozark Weddings. Tell us a little bit about the three stories.

Anita: All three stories are set in Arkansas—Eureka Springs, Little Rock, and Hot Springs. Larkspur Dreams and Castles in the Air are romantic comedy, while the middle story, The Love Song, is more dramatic in tone.

Janice: Larkspur Dreams is a lighthearted, whimsical tale that will appeal to inspirational romance readers, particularly those with artistic leanings. The Love Song reaches into the depths of the reader’s soul, dealing with the topic of overcoming past hurts. Castles in the Air provides a humorous look at the way we are perceived by others, and teaches us that our prejudices (comical as they might be) often keep us from the very thing God has planned for us.

Anita, you and Janice co-authored the three stories in Ozark Weddings. How do writers go about co-authoring?

Anita: There are a number of ways to co-author a novel. One writer might do the research and the other writer may actually write the story. Or co-authors may each choose a character and write from that character’s POV. In the three novels, I guess you could say I wrote the body and wings of the stories, and Janice helped to make them fly. She has a gift for critiquing.

Janice: Working with Anita is a breeze because she conceives and fully plots the stories then lets me add my thoughts/tidbits to give them flavor. She is so quirky and fun to work with, and I am very proud of the stories we have co-produced.

Were there times when it was hard to work together?

Anita: Janice is not only talented, but easy to work with. There were a few times in one of the novels that I found myself writing in a way that strayed from the general concept of a Heartsong romance. Janice made some good suggestions, which steered me in the right direction.

Janice: I can honestly say that I’ve never worked with anyone who was so willing to accept critique and/or take suggestions as Anita. She is a precious friend and collaborative partner. I already knew she was talented (even before we began this project) but had no idea how gracious she would be. Since I’ve written for the Heartsong line for years, I was able to “teach her the ropes” (as it were) and she was a ready learner! That’s not to say she hasn’t taught me a thing or two. I’ve learned much from her throughout this process, particularly as it applies to romantic tension. She’s far better at that than I am, and I’m happy to admit it.

Why did you choose to be a writer?

Anita: Ever since I was a little girl, I had this need to express myself in some sort of artistic medium. I’ve tried a number of things: piano, painting, decorating, and acting. But I’ve never been very good at any these endeavors, except writing. I guess really then—writing chose me.

Janice: Like Anita, I’ve always been artistic. As a youngster, I sang, danced and played the piano. I was also very involved in theater as a young person. I’ve been writing since childhood. I wrote my first novella in 6th grade, then went on to write musical comedies for the stage before turning to books in the mid-90’s. Like Anita, I can truly say that I didn’t choose writing; it chose me. Or, perhaps I should say that God chose it for me, as a gift.

When did you have your first success as a writer?

Anita: After several years of writing, I had some gradual success—books for children, books of one-act plays, and nonfiction for women. These successes were enough to keep me going toward my ultimate goal, which was to write novels.

Janice: This may sound a bit silly, but my first real writing “success” happened my senior year in high school, when I was chosen to help write the senior production. I had a blast, and the scene I crafted (a 1930’s/Busby Berkeley-esque “The Show Must Go On” scene) was a huge success. I can’t tell you what fun I had, or how great it felt for people to respond as they did.
Do you have any special methods of getting into the writing zone, such as favorite scents, music, or certain foods?

Anita: In the past I used to go to a French cafĂ©, order coffee and scrambled eggs, and then write a rough chapter. The noise, music, and bustle always energized me creatively. But now I’m more of a homebody, so I sit for long hours in my office, working on my stories.

Janice: An "ideal" writing situation for me would involve someplace like Starbucks (or otherwise) with a cup of my favorite hot beverage in my hand (to be discussed below). Ironically, when I'm at home, I can't stand having music going. I find it terribly distracting... something about the "beat" drives me nutty. Having the television on is okay, but it's often muted. Crazy, I know. I'm a fanatic about my Diet Dr. Pepper and several flavors of hot tea. I particularly love Earl Grey and Chai Latte, among others. And I'm nuts about hot chocolate in the wintertime. I'm also crazy about my puppies. I have two red mini-dachshunds named Sasha and Copper. They usually settle in next to me on the sofa, Sasha on my right, Copper on my left. When we're all in place (with a cup of tea or a Diet Dr. Pepper on the end table, depending on the season) I'm ready to begin. Of course, I usually have to weed through several emails (clearing a path) before I can actually start writing. Whew! Sounds like quite a process, doesn't it?! It's a wonder I get anything done at all!

What is your best advice for aspiring writers?

Anita: If you feel called to write, don’t let people discourage you. I’m sure they don’t realize the impact of their words, but negative remarks can undermine our courage and joy. Comments similar to: “Maybe you weren’t really meant to be published.” Or, “Are you making any money at this yet?” Perhaps you’ve heard, “Why can’t you write like my favorite author?” Honestly, I could go on and on here. Writing is a great and honorable profession—one that can challenge, inspire, and change people’s lives. If you love words and love arranging them into stories, then don’t let the battering influence of dispiriting comments shatter your dream. Keep pressing on!

Janice: I often say this to young/new writers: Learn the craft, but don’t necessarily write what the publishers/agents/houses tell you to write. Trends change. Stick with the stories God places on your heart and if He intends them to be published, He will find the right publishing house in the right time.

What are your writing plans for the future?

Anita: I’d love to just keep doing what I’m doing. But I think I’d also enjoy writing novels for the young adult market.

Janice: I’m open to whatever God wants (and I really mean that). If He shifts me in a new direction (women’s fiction, for example) I’m following His lead! If He asks me to lay the writing down for a season in order to accomplish a different task, I’m open to that, too.
