THE INDENTURED QUEEN - Carol Moncado - One Free Book

Dear Readers, Carol is one of my favorite authors. I love royalty stories, and there are a few Christian authors who write contemporary royals so well. Carol and Rachel Hauck are my two favorites. I love her storylines, her characters, the way she makes the people so real and relatable. I actually haven’t read this new one, but I’m really looking forward to receiving my copy. I know you’ll love her stories, too.

Welcome back, Carol. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
I’m already living my dream! I write full time and get to share my stories with the world! I’ve met new friends from around the world and, hopefully, touch some people with the stories.

Tell us a little about your family.
I’ve been married for just over 21 years! We have four kids. All of them have been on swim team and all are band kids. My oldest daughter is 16, just got her driver’s license, and plays tenor saxophone! She’s been invited to play in Macy’s Great American Marching Band at the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade the next two years! My second daughter is 14 and starting her freshman year. She’s on color guard and plays flute. My third daughter is 13 and plays trumpet and guitar. My youngest is my only son. He turns 11 in a couple weeks and is excited to start learning trombone next month!

We have over 25 instruments in our house. Me? I play the radio… ;)

I love it! Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
I don’t get to read as much :(. As much as I love to read, I don’t get to as much as I wish. I do still read a lot though. Through mid-May, I’m at 42 books so far this year. I need to update my list with what I’ve read since then … I’m also pickier. It’s got to really hold my interest to keep going.

There are so many really, really good books being published, I give them about three chapters. If I can’t get into the story, I don’t finish. What are you working on right now?
Band camp :p. Seriously ;). The first week of band camp, I’ll probably spend at least 30-35 hours at school working on sorting/organizing uniforms, revamping/attempting to teenager-proof the hand out process, feeding 160 band kids lunch, handing out popsicles to 160 band kids trying to avoid heat stroke ;), and everything in between! The second week, I shouldn’t be there as much during the day but will be there a couple of nights to help hand out uniforms - but probably only 20-25 hours total ;).

When I’m not band mom-ing it up, I’m working on the sequel to The Indentured Queen! Her Undercover Prince is Princess Jacqueline Grace of San Majoria’s story! YAY! I’m loving what I’ve written so far and can’t wait to really dive in after band camp ends!

We have to feature it on my blog. What outside interests do you have?
Being a band mom is a HUGE part of my life (see last answer ;)). Well, just being a mom. It’s one thing I love about being a writer. I’m able to basically take two weeks off in mid-July to spend that many hours coordinating volunteers to serve lunches and hand out popsicles and fit uniforms - and get to know my kids’ friends! This year, at least they’re wearing nametags ;). We also do swim team (2 kids this year) and all kinds of other stuff that I’m able to be there for. I am looking forward to being an empty-nester someday and doing a lot more traveling! I was in NYC a few weeks ago and will be back at Thanksgiving with my daughter for the parade. Next year, we’re hoping to take the whole family!

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I use a lot of fictional countries because I write a lot of royalty. For my first royal series, I sort of chopped out parts of Switzerland and Italy for two countries and two islands - one part of France and one part of Italy. I got several comments about how there isn’t really room for those countries in Europe so I tend to use island nations now ;). As for which where, it depends in large part on who the story is about. King Benjamin’s story necessarily takes place mostly in Eyjania’s capitol city. Jacqueline Grace’s story starts in San Majoria, heads to NYC, then Ravenzario, then a couple other countries. Many also have ties to a fictional version of my home town (sort of, kinda) so we travel there a lot too.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
One huge part of me wants to go with “my mom.” She’s not really an historical person, but it’s been over 30 years since she passed, and I’d love to spend some time with her. Otherwise, I think I’d like to spend some time with Queen Elizabeth. I’m also not sure she really counts as historical since she’s still alive, but she’s seen SO MUCH and fascinates me.

I’m with you on the mom thing. My mother died when I was 7, so I have snatches of memories of her. I’d love to know her as an adult, and I’d love to know how she feels about the way I turned out. (I did have a wonderful stepmother who helped my father raise the three of us. What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
Honestly, I don’t know. Some people would say how hard it’s going to be, but I’m kind of glad I didn’t know. But it would have been kind of nice to know that I’d be able to do it.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
Patience. I can’t really go into a particular situation (nothing bad or anything), but it’s definitely teaching me patience! And grace!

Those two are hard lessons to learn, no matter the circumstances. What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
*Keep your options open. Don’t tie yourself to traditional publication or being indie. Either one can be amazing - and, conversely, either one can be awful experiences. Educate yourself, pray about it, and make the best choice for you.

*Never get too big for your britches - or underestimate your worth. There will always be someone who can do it better or faster or make more money at it than you, but that doesn’t mean you’re a failure.

*At the same time, just because things are going well, that doesn’t mean you’ve got it all figured out.

Tell us about the featured book.
King Benjamin was first introduced in Reclaiming Hearts over a year ago! I didn’t know anything about him when I first mentioned him and had no idea he would be so complex! I love him and his journey. He’s been king since his father passed when he was 13. His aunt was his regent and did her job well, backing off when he turned 18. But his uncle… His uncle always wanted to be king and used his position to influence Benjamin.

Please give us the first page of the book.
In forty-eight hours, King Benjamin James Timothy would be in complete control of his household for the first time.

He strode through the wide hallways of the Eyjanian palace toward his uncle’s quarters.

The quarters that Isaiah should be in the process of vacating.

It had only been a few hours since he’d stood up to his uncle for the first time at the Mevendian Founders’ Ball held at the Eyjanian home of Prince William and Princess Margaret of Mevendia. Benjamin’s security team knew the instructions he’d given Isaiah. Benjamin also knew Isaiah likely wouldn’t follow them without force.

A maid he didn’t recognize scurried down the hall, stopping just long enough for a quick curtsy. Benjamin barely noticed. Staff members, outside of senior staff members, were to be seen and not heard, and not seen whenever possible.

Someone else, just out of Benjamin’s line of sight, ducked through an open door. Good. He didn’t like to be disturbed. Most of the staff knew to get of the way before he was close enough to see them.

“Is he packing?” One of Benjamin’s most trusted guards stood outside the door.

“Unlikely, sir.” Thor bowed slightly at the waist. “I haven’t heard any noise coming from inside his quarters.”

“And the tunnels are sealed off?”

“I have a man inside each of the tunnels leading from these quarters, and another at the exits. They report in every fifteen minutes. He won’t be able to get anything out of here those ways.” Thor knew Benjamin would hold him personally responsible if Isaiah did make off with anything.

“Good.” Benjamin stared at the door and wondered about going in. No. Not now. Tomorrow, if there were no indications of movement, he would enter and remove his uncle from the premises. Rather, he would have Isaiah removed. He had people to do that.

He retraced his steps until he reached the Rainbow Reception Room. Across the room, in front of a wall between the floor-to-ceiling windows, a dagger sat encased in a glass cube.

The knight’s dagger belonging to King Alfred the First.

I am so eager to read this book. How can readers find you on the Internet?
The two best places are my newsletter and my reader group on Facebook. I only send out newsletters when there’s news! Serenity Landing Book Club is where I spend a fair bit of time - we talk books and favorite places to visit and do book club type questions when each book releases. You can sign up for my newsletter here and join the reader group here. Right now, there’s a free prequel novella available to newsletter subscribers. Love for the Ages tells the story of how King Benjamin’s parents met!

Thank you, Carol, for letting me introduce my blog readers to this new book. I know they will be as eager as I am to read it.

GLIMPSING HOPE - Carol Moncado - One Free Book

Welcome back, Carol. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
Because it’s what I’m good at. I know that seems kind of simplistic, but I’ve tried writing romantic suspense (we don’t talk about that one) and historicals (it’s decent but I don’t want to write them full time!) so I write contemporary romantic dramedy - they have definite comedic moments, but they have their serious side as well.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
Oh goodness. That’s a tough one. Can I pick five? For different reasons. Wedding day - because I get to spend the rest of my life with the love of my life (it’ll be 20 years in just a few weeks!) and the days each of my children were born. Some of those days were tougher than others, but I absolutely adore my kids and wouldn’t trade any of them for anything!

How has being published changed your life?
Being published, indie published in particular, has allowed me to write full time. I did teach part time at a community college, but last spring was my last semester. There were a number of other factors that led to the decision but the reason we were able to make that choice is the income from my books. I’ve also learned SO MUCH about the whole process! I’m far more capable than I would have thought (though paperbacks continue to be taxing - in fact I’m a couple behind there :p) and I really enjoy writing what I want to write without the restrictions an outsider can impose (they know their readers so I know it works for them; I know mine though ;)). I enjoy my own schedule, too. In just under 2.5 years, my 20th book is about to release, and I fully expect to hit 25 before three years is up.

What are you reading right now?
Right this minute, nothing, but I’m looking forward to an advance copy of Mikal Dawn’s Count Me In this weekend or next week. I’ve also got Laura Frantz’s On A Moonbow Night waiting on me. I’ve heard it’s FANTASTIC!

What is your current work in progress?
I am “this close” to done with Reclaiming Hearts, the third book in the Serenity Landing Second Chances series. The hero is Prince William, so it also wraps up the next generation of royals from the three countries in Belles Montagnes, but it introduces us to the royal family of Eyjania - their stories will start later this year. I’m also working on the first book in the series that will likely have both the Eyjanian family and the San Majorian family in it. It’s called Heart of a Prince and should release this summer. Reclaiming Hearts is available for preorder and likely releases 4/21 (though Amazon currently says 4/30).

What would be your dream vacation?
We just took it! My husband and I took our whole family on a Caribbean cruise for spring break. Eight days and seven nights on board Liberty of the Seas. We did excursions in Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica. We loved all of them for different reasons. Most of my family loved all there was to see and do on board the ship. I loved finding a quiet spot to read and relax. I would do it again in a heartbeat (though I think I’d get three rooms instead of two - the kids were a little crowded and getting on each other’s nerves by the end of it).

James and I have been on a cruise to those three places, too. We loved it. How do you choose your settings for each book?
Hmm. I don’t really know. Sometimes it just comes to me. More often, it depends on where the character is from geographically. Since Glimpsing Hope is about Christopher Bayfield who lives in Serenity Landing, that’s where it takes place. Reclaiming Hearts is about William, Crown Prince of Mevendia, so a chunk of it takes place there, though it also goes to Serenity Landing and Eyjania.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
Queen Elizabeth. She fascinates me! The history she’s seen and been a part of. The changing royal family and how they’re perceived by the public, changing customs (how different was Prince Charles’s marriage from Prince William’s), and so on. Plus hanging out at Buckingham Palace would be fascinating! And surely Prince Philip would stop by to say hello! There’s another fascinating character!

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
I’m a band mom :D. That takes up A LOT of my time! Otherwise, I watch a lot of television. I’m currently working my way through Star Trek: Deep Space 9.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
This is probably a weird one, but I write best late at night in a very daytime world. At 9 or 10 pm, I can write as much in an hour as it would take me all day to write. My optimal time, is 9 or 10 until about 1 or 2 in the morning. That’s not easy when you have to be up in the morning :/. Since writing full time though, I’m able to work late. I get up about 6:30 to take the freshman to school (her tenor saxophone is rather unwieldy on the bus), come home, and two mornings a week I get my son ready for school as my husband’s already gone. Once those things are done, I go back to bed and sleep until late morning. In the afternoons, I don’t usually write, but often do other writing related stuff, like graphic design, then go back to work writing as the kids go to bed.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Write. Write. Write some more. And read just as much. A lot. Good books. Okay books. Even bad books. In your genre and others. Good writing is good writing no matter what the genre. Join a group like ACFW and learn everything you can. Finish one book. Make it as good as you can on your own. Send it out to the world either by querying or rounds of edits with others to indie publish (tip: your first book probably isn’t nearly as ready as you think it is; get professionals or at least other writers who’ve been at this a lot longer to help you get it ready). Then start another one.

Tell us about the featured book.
They say writers are weird… and they’re not wrong. About two weeks before I started writing Glimpsing Hope, this little girl showed up in my head and said, “What about me?”
Me: Who are you?
Her: I’m his daughter.
Me: I didn’t know he had a daughter.
Her: Neither does he.

And there she was. I know how strange it sounds, but that conversation actually happened in my head! So, Glimpsing Hope gained a little girl - named for a friend of mine’s daughter who went to be with the Lord far, far too young.

Glimpsing Hope
Christopher Bayfield enjoys his single life. Unencumbered by relationships, he works and travels whenever he wants. He can even drop everything to do something he's been dreaming of for a while - return to acting in a Happily Ever After TV Network movie. But before he can leave a knock on the door changes his life.

Julia Quisenberry never planned to have one child out of wedlock, much less be pregnant with number two, but this was what her life had become. Unemployed and barely making ends meet with her knitting patterns and teaching, she's almost desperate enough to take a handout from her best friend.

A phone call from Christopher changes Julia's plans. He offers her a job and a lifeline, in more ways than one. So when the paparazzi threaten all he holds dear, she'll do anything to help him out - even marry him. Can they overcome the obstacles in their path to find a glimpse of hope for their own happily ever after?

Author’s note: The first chapter of Glimpsing Hope picks up at the end of Winning the Queen's Heart and before the events of Protecting the Prince. The second chapter begins in the universe’s “present day” - after the events of Discovering Home.

Please give us the first page of the book.
May 2017
“I’ll pay for them to fly commercial.” Christopher Bayfield crossed his arms over his chest and stared down the duke. He could do that because the duke was also his twin brother. No one else would understand why he wanted to avoid this flight.

Alexander tugged on the bottom of his tuxedo jacket and frowned into the mirror. “Someday I’ll figure out how to make this look right with the sash on the first try.”

“It’s your own fault for marrying a queen, Ander, but don’t think you’re getting out of this. I’ll pay for them to fly back, first class.”

Alexander turned away from the mirror to face Christopher. “Christiana, your pregnant sister-in-law, asked you to fly them back on the family plane. You’re really going to turn her down?”

“If you won’t let me pay for them to go back first class, I’ll rent a plane for them.”

“You get to tell the queen you don’t want to do the one thing she asked you to do for the woman who saved her life, and the life of your niece or nephew.”

Christopher hated it when his brother was right. “Then they can take the plane home, and I’ll rent one of my own. Or buy my own first class ticket.”

“Don’t be ridiculous, Topher.” Alexander limped to the door of Christopher’s room, his leg still recovering from the recent shoot out with the man who tried to kill his wife. Alexander had come to Christopher’s room to guilt trip him into doing this. Help fixing his tie was just an excuse. “Just ride home in the plane with them. Sit at the table and work the whole time or take the couch and sleep. I’m not saying you have to become bosom buddies with the gal, just make sure she and her son don’t die in a horrid plane crash on the way back. Once you land, put them in the car Jonathan will provide and go on your merry way.”

HAND-ME-DOWN PRINCESS - Carol Moncado - One Free Book

Dear Readers, when I first saw the cover of this book, I contacted Carol and asked her to be on the blog. I read the book, and I loved it. I’m really into royalty novels, contemporary, historical, or like a fairy tale. This one is unique, with so many different plot lines and intrigues and a marriage of convenience romance. The characters are multi-dimensional and really drew me right into the story. I can hardly wait to read the next book in the series.

Welcome, Carol. I know my readers will enjoy chatting with you in the comments.
Lena – thank you so much for having me today! I appreciate the invitation!

Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
I think pretty much every character has a little bit of me. Some characters have more than others, of course. Dorrie, in Finding Mr. Write, has a lot of me in her – a writer struggling with whether or not she’s good enough to make it in this industry and everything else that goes along with that, along with struggling with feelings of self-worth. Others, like Jessabelle Keller in Hand-Me-Down Princess, deal with some of the same issues but with a different perspective. While Dorrie’s issues are universal, Jessabelle’s come more from the place of finding worth in our identity as a child of the King – the One True King.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
Um … I’m really not that quirky ;). We moved into our first house on Friday the 13th … on Elm Street. Put the offer on our second house on 06/06/06. Good thing we’re not superstitious! :D I talk to myself sometimes, but I think that’s pretty endemic of writers in general.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
I’ve been telling stories most of my life. I wrote some of them down in junior high. I started writing for fun off and on starting in 2001 and got serious about writing for publication during NaNoWriMo 2009.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
I read a fairly wide spectrum, though not as wide as some. Most of what I read is romance – contemporary or historical – but I also read some romantic suspense, suspense, historical, occasionally speculative fiction. Almost everything is Christian, but not always. There are a few secular authors I enjoy sometimes – Grisham, Clancy, etc.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
Spending time with God is always a big one – Reading my Bible, time in church, etc. Spending time just being with family and friends is huge, too. Plus reading. Reading a good book is a great way to just kind of be for a little while!

How do you choose your characters’ names?
There are lots of different ways. Sometimes, it’s a character named after a friend who helps with research questions (Jason the Paramedic comes to mind!) or because my favorite Panera manager insisted I needed to name a character after him (Travis Harders gets his story this summer!) or because it’s an oblique reference to a popular TV show (Duke Alexander and his twin brother Christopher (Winning the Queen’s Heart) have the initials A and C because of the assorted references to Saved by the Bell in that book – and AC Slater). Other times it’s me telling a friend (or my street team) that I need a name and picking one I like (or sometimes … one I don’t hate and hope it grows on me – it usually does! ;)).

I had the owner of Chan’s Mongolian Grill ask me to name a character after him. Tony Chan is in both Mary’s Blessing and Catherine’s Pursuit in my McKenna’s Daughters series. What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Two things immediately come to mind. One is my kids. I’m incredibly proud of all four of them. From their swim team accomplishments to my 14-year-old’s tenor saxophone, my 12-year-old’s compassion, my 10-year-old’s determination in the face of her academic challenges and her horsemanship skills, and my 8-year-old’s ability to make a friend wherever he goes. Plus – my husband and I have been married nearly 19 years. I’m pretty proud of that ;).

The other is stepping out in faith a little over a year ago. I started my own publishing company, CANDID Publications, and “went indie” rather than continuing to pursue traditional publication for the time being. While I’m not going to be on any “top 100 indie earners” lists, it’s gone far better than I could have anticipated, and I’m loving (almost ;)) every minute of it!

I’m a hybrid author, both traditionally published and Indie. I’m planning to do more than one Indie this year. If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
I asked a friend of mine what she thought. She said “horse?” I came back with “sloth” (because naps!). She laughed hysterically and pointed out that tigers nap all the time, too ;). I kind of like that. So a tiger – because I can nap regularly but can be fierce when it’s called for. Come to think of it, my 5 lb Shorkie fits that bill, too. The tiger would be scarier though!

What is your favorite food?
Andy’s Frozen Custard, peanut butter cup concrete or Peanut Butter M&Ms.
Real food? Spaghetti and three cheese tortellini with orange sauce and shredded Colby Jack on top. That real food sounds yummy. I might have to try it.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
One thing I struggle with regularly when it comes to writing is focus. Treating it like a real job because it is. When I wasn’t publishing my own books, I had no real deadline and could be less diligent. Now that I’m publishing and have deadlines (real ones, even if self-imposed), I’m having to learn how to treat it more like an actual job than a hobby. That means I don’t answer the phone every time someone calls if I’m working. Or that I can say no to people who want me to do stuff “since you just sit at home all day” because this is a real, paying job for me now. It also means less time binge watching Dr. Who, NCIS, or Big Bang Theory ;).

Tell us about the featured book.
Hand-Me-Down Princess started with the title. Why would a princess feel like a hand-me-down, like clothes? What circumstances would lead to that? Plus I’d been watching Married at First Sight and wondered how I could work in a meeting at the altar. Without spoilers, it turned into something I didn’t expect – exploring how important it is to find our identity in Christ, as a joint heir, a child of the One True King, and not in our earthly roles (child of an earthly king, wife of a prince, author, teacher, speaker, parent, spouse, etc.). More than one person ends up needing to come to terms with that – and to be honest, I often do, too.

Eventually everyone will have to. Please give us the first page of the book.
Nothing like being a hand-me-down Princess.

The words mocked Jessabelle over and over as she stared at her reflection in the mirror.

Hand-me-down.

Passed over.

Rejected.

Unwanted.

In less than an hour she would become Princess Jessabelle of Mevendia, wife of Prince Malachi, second in line for the throne. Not because he wanted to marry her, but because Crown Prince William had rejected her.

Twice.

Prince Malachi only upheld his family’s end of the marriage contract because her father had saved King Antonio’s life when they were teens.

Under no circumstances would Prince Malachi ever have chosen plain, mousy Jessabelle on his own. It was probably just as well the Crown Prince refused to marry her. She wouldn’t have wanted to be queen. Every little girl dreamed of being a princess, right? Most girls wouldn’t be sitting in a bedroom in a house provided for her family by the groom wondering if she could climb out the window. Would anyone notice? Guards had been posted on the grounds to protect the future princess, but she doubted anyone cared enough to sneak in and try to get pictures of her or kidnap her. No one even knew who she was. Would any of them care if she snuck out? Would anyone even realize it was her if it weren’t for the wedding gown?

How can readers find you on the Internet?
