THE THINGS WE KNEW - Catherine West - One Free Book

Bio: INSPY Award-winning author Catherine West writes stories of hope and healing from her island home in Bermuda. When she’s not at the computer working on her next story, you can find her taking her Border Collie for long walks or reading books by her favorite authors. She and her husband have two grown children. Catherine’s novel, Bridge of Faith, won the 2015 Grace Award. Her new novel, The Things We Knew, released July 12th, 2016, through Harper Collins Christian Publishing.

Catherine loves to connect with her readers and can be reached at Catherine@catherinejwest.com

Dear Readers, I love having friends in foreign countries. I first became aware of Catherine when someone told me there was a woman from Bermuda at the ACFW national conference in Dallas. I never did find the woman to meet her. Since then, we’ve become good writer friends. I’m always eager to hear about her new releases.

Welcome back, Catherine. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?
I love writing about restoration, reconciliation, forgiveness, and healing, things I think are so needed in today’s world. My stories are also always infused with hope and grace.

What other books of yours are coming out soon?
My next book is called The Memory of You and will release March 2017. It takes place on a vineyard in Sonoma, and I’m very excited about it!

Thirteen years ago, Natalie lost a part of herself when her twin sister died. Will traveling back to the family winery finally put the memory to rest, or will it completely destroy her?

When Natalie Mitchell learns her beloved grandfather has had a heart attack, she’s forced to return to their family-owned winery in Sonoma, something she never intended to do. She’s avoided her grandparents’ sprawling home and all its memories since the summer her sister died—the awful summer Natalie’s nightmares began. But the winery is failing, and Natalie’s father wants her to shut it down. As the majority shareholder, she has the power to do so. And Natalie never says no to her father.

Tanner Collins, the vintner on Maoilios, is trying to salvage a bad season and put the Mitchell family’s winery back in business. When Natalie Mitchell shows up, Tanner sees his future about to be crushed. Natalie intends to close the gates, unless he can convince her otherwise. But the Natalie he remembers from childhood is long gone, and he’s not so sure he likes the woman she’s become. Still, the haunted look she wears hints at secrets he wants to unearth. He soon discovers that on the night her sister died, the real Natalie died too. And Tanner must do whatever it takes to resurrect her.

But finding freedom from the past means facing it.

I’m eager for that story to come out, too. We must feature it on my blog. If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?
I’d probably choose The Duchess of Cambridge. I think she’d be fun to talk to, and I would love to hear how she copes with being a royal and constantly being under scrutiny in the spotlight. I’d also hope for an introduction to her kids and their dog, and of course William. J I’m a monarchist at heart.

Although we don’t have a monarch in the U.S., I’m interested in royals. What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?
I would love to meet Jane Austen. I think she’d have some fabulous stories to tell, and we could talk about all her books, how she came up with her characters. She’d be fascinating!

How can you enourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?
My best advice is to keep going, don’t quit, even when it’s hard, even when you don’t see the way forward. If you truly believe that writing is what you are called to do, then you must accept that it’s a long and difficult journey. But God is at work behind the scenes, and I believe His timing is everything. Keep studying the craft, keep writing, make connections with other writers, attend conferences if you can, and keep believing in your dream.

Tell us about the featured book.
When their tragic past begins to resurface, can he help her remember the things she can’t?

After her mother’s death twelve years ago, Lynette Carlisle watched her close-knit family unravel. One by one, her four older siblings left their Nantucket home and never returned. All seem to blame their father for their mother’s death, but nobody will talk about that tragic day. And Lynette’s memory only speaks through nightmares.

Then Nicholas Cooper returns to Nantucket, bringing the past with him. Once Lynette’s adolescent crush, Nick knows more about her mother’s death than he lets on. The truth could tear apart his own family¾and destroy his fragile friendship with Lynette, the woman he no longer thinks of as a kid sister.

As their father’s failing health and financial concerns bring the Carlisle siblings home, secrets surface that will either restore their shattered relationships or separate the siblings forever. But pulling up anchor on the past propels them into the perfect storm, powerful enough to make them question their faith, their willingness to forgive, and the very truth of all the things they thought they knew.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Sometimes in the dead of night, Lynette Carlisle heard her mother’s voice. Sometimes it was easy to forget her mother had been dead twelve years. Curled up in bed, covers pulled tight, she strained to hear the whisper over the wind. Some nights the voice was clear, like Mom was right there in the room, the faintest scent of light musk and lavender tickling Lynette’s imagination. Other nights, all she heard was her own sigh of disappointment as angry waves crashed against the Nantucket cliffs beyond the garden wall. Some nights she welcomed the voice. Some nights it made her wish for the impossible and remember life as it had been, before. Some nights, like tonight, it kept her awake and rattled the cage of her memory. Tonight the voice came to her, as it so often did, in a dream. The message was urgent, but she couldn’t remember a word of it. Dad. That was it. She sat up in bed and rubbed her eyes. Something about Dad. A few sleepy moments later, Lynette stood in the doorway of her father’s bedroom and stared at the empty bed. Red numbers glowed through the semidarkness. Four a.m. She checked the bathroom, but he wasn’t there.

I wonder where he is. How can readers find you on the Internet?

When she’s not at the computer working on her next story, you can find her taking her Border Collie for long walks or tending to her roses and orchids. She and her husband have two grown children. Catherine is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers and Romance Writers of America. Catherine loves to connect with her readers and can be reached at Catherine@catherinejwest.com

Welcome back, Catherine. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I love dealing with real-life situations. Things all of us struggle with, exploring the need for God’s grace and mercy in our lives. Wrestling the problem with sin. And revealing the exquisite beauty of the cross when we realize just how much we need God to change us.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
Ooo, tough question! I’d have to say the birth of my two children. Those were definitely two of the happiest days of my life, and my husband’s. And then more recently, the day our daughter walked down the aisle to marry the love of her life, almost 2 years ago!

How has being published changed your life?
I wouldn’t say my life has really changed much, but I love knowing I’m able to share the books I write with readers. I love connecting with them and hearing how those stories have impacted their lives in some way. It’s wonderful for an author to know that goal was met. While I do hope to entertain, I really do pray my words reach beyond the surface and leave my reader with a little more than what they bargained for.

What are you reading right now?
I have a few books on the go, but since I’m in the middle of promoting my book right now, I’m not finding much time to read. The last book I finished was Beth Vogt’s Crazy Little Thing Called Love, which I got to read for endorsement, always a pleasure! I have a list a mile long of books I want to read, and hopefully I’ll be able to make a good start on them soon!

What is your current work in progress?
I currently have several completed projects ready to go, and there’ll be more to come on those in the near future. So right now I’m waiting to see which direction to go next. I have some ideas, but I suppose I’m having a bit of a rest at the moment, because life is going to get busy again very soon! J

What would be your dream vacation?
My husband and I are talking about a trip to Italy. That’s truly my dream vacation. Not sure when it’ll happen, but we’re definitely looking into it. But outside of that, my dream vacation is anywhere with my husband, our daughter, my son-in-law, our son, and his girlfriend. We have the best times together, and I love it when we’re all in the same place at the same time.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I think they kind of choose me. J Honestly, I’m always stumped by these kinds of questions, because I don’t really know where my ideas come from. They just show up, and I play around until I find the one that works. Not a very helpful answer is it? Sometimes it can be from a memory of a place I’ve been, read about, or would like to go to.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
Ah. I have to say my sister! I was adopted at birth, and we only met for the first time in 2003. Since she lives in the US and I live in Bermuda, I don’t get to spend nearly as much time with her as I would like! But when we’re together we have a blast. She’s the biggest blessing to me, and I still can’t believe God gave me a big sister. She’s just the best. J

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
I love to garden. I spend lots of time with my border collie, Noah, and I like watching movies. Walking, swimming. I do like painting but haven’t made much time for it.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
Having faith in myself. This has always been a hard thing for me. Every time a book releases, I keep waiting for people to say, “Wow, you really can’t write!” It hasn’t happened yet. J But, yes, I have to work hard at not listening to the enemy and really knowing and trusting that this is the journey God has placed me on, and any talent I have comes from him.

I think that the enemy tries to discourage all us Christian writers. Listening for the Lord’s voice instead is part of our lives. What advice would you give to a beginning author?
I’d say learn the craft. Read, as much as you can. Go to seminars and conferences as much as possible. Find a published author or two who might be willing to mentor you. Don’t be afraid of critiques and learn from them. Enter contests but don’t put stock in them. Make as many connections as you can, make friends, be sincere, and don’t try to impress anyone. And never, ever give up. If this is what God has for you, take it from me, He will make a way.

Tell us about the featured book.

Two lives taken down different roads - one enduring love - one shot at starting over.
If only they believed in second chances.

Julia Connelly is finally free from twelve long years in an abusive relationship. Now able to live the life she’s longed for, Julia takes her two children back home to Vermont, hoping for peace and healing. The last person she expects to see is the man she eloped with at eighteen—who then abandoned her two months into their marriage, with little explanation.
When an assignment in the Middle East ends in tragedy, popular news correspondent, Reid Wallace, returns to his hometown seeking answers and peace of mind.

Confronting his past was not in the plan.

Now he’s asking different questions. Like why the only woman he’s ever really loved still mesmerizes him. Why the haunted expression she wears reaches right into his soul.

And why her twelve year-old son looks just like him.

They say you can’t go home again. Sometimes you don’t have a choice.

Please give us the first page of the book.
He only needed to survive one more day. Then he’d be home … back on US soil.

A lot can happen in twenty-four hours.

He’d learned that the hard way.

“What did he say?” Reid Wallace shouted at their guide over the yells and screams as townspeople rushed by, eager to get the latest news. Sweat slipped down his back and he swatted at the flies hovering over the food he hadn’t touched. He cracked a wad of gum and leaned closer as chanting—the call to morning prayers—began from a mosque somewhere up in the hills.

More people filled the streets, even though the air was thick with smoke. Debris littered the roads from the explosion that rocked the small town several hours ago. Children kicked at cans and tossed a dirty soccer ball to one another on their way to school. Women gathered in groups, conversing with rapid-fire words and hand gestures. Trucks rolled by. Vendors peddled their wares. The stench of rotting vegetation, stagnant water and who knew what else, sickened his already weak stomach.

Life in a war zone.

Life went on. Even here.

I can hardly wait for my copy of the book to arrive. I’ll read it right away. How can readers find you on the Internet?

HIDDEN IN THE HEART - Catherine West - One Free Book

Bio:
Catherine West is an award-winning author who writes stories of hope and healing from her island home in Bermuda. Educated in Bermuda, England and Canada, Catherine holds a degree in English from the University of Toronto. When she’s not at the computer working on her next story, you can find her taking her Border Collie for long walks or tending to her roses and orchids. She and her husband have two college-aged children. Catherine is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers and Romance Writers of America, and is represented by Rachelle Gardner of Books & Such Literary. Catherine loves to connect with her readers and can be reached at Catherine@catherinejwest.com

Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I love to read romance, so it stands to reason that I love to write books with romantic storylines! I also love to deal with issues of forgiveness, redemption, healing, and restoration. My books will always have those themes running through them because I believe you just can’t get enough of God’s grace!

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
Wow. Tough question. I have had so many wonderful moments in my life. I think I’d have to say it’s a tie between my wedding day and the safe deliveries of my two amazing children.

How has being published changed your life?
I wouldn’t say my life has really changed, but being published has helped get me organized and more focused. I’m writing with more of a purpose now, knowing the books I’m writing are getting published. I’m also more mindful of how I spend my time, and careful to balance my day so that I have enough time for writing, marketing, and personal time for exercise and fun!

What are you reading right now?
I haven’t started anything new recently, but the last book I finished was Seahorse in the Thames, by Susan Meissner. A great read!

What is your current work in progress?
The book I’m working on now is a Contemporary Romance called Bridge of Faith. It’s a story of coming home, lost love, and second chances. I’m totally in love with my characters, Reid and Julia, and I’m hoping all works out well for them. J

What would be your dream vacation?
Oh, this is easy! I have always wanted to go to Italy. I’m looking forward to that day, not that it’s in the works, but one of these years my husband and I will do that. Actually my daughter is getting married next summer, and she and her fiancĂ© will be going to Italy for their honeymoon, so we’ve been planning that with them and getting all sorts of ideas!

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I’m not sure that I do. They tend to choose themselves. I may play around with a few ideas for settings, and eventually settle on one that feels right. Of course the exception to this was Vietnam in my book Yesterday’s Tomorrow. I knew I wanted to write about a female journalist who went to Vietnam, and the story progressed from there. In Hidden in the Heart, the setting of Maine just seemed right for that story. I’ve never been there, but I imagine it to be a very peaceful place.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
I’d love to meet Barbara Walters. I think she’s interviewed so many amazing people – it would be really cool to sit down and chat with her for a while. I’m sure she’d have lots of interesting things to say!

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
I love to watch movies, but lately it has been hard to find good ones. One thing my family and I enjoy is finding television series we haven’t seen when they aired, buying the series DVDs and catching up on those shows. My current favorite is Army Wives. We’re also big Downton Abbey fans, but of course that’s still running. I love gardening, going for walks with my dog, and taking photographs. I used to crochet but I haven’t done that for a while.

I had totally missed Downton Abbey, and only heard about it after the end of the second season. So I ordered the DVDs of seasons one and two, and James watched all of them over about a three-week period. We loved them. What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
I’m a seat of the pants writer, so I’ll often barrel along without much rhyme or reason to what I’m doing until I get a good sense of where the story is going. I tend to edit as I go and I find this can be quite an obstacle because I need to go back, often to the first chapter, to go over everything again before I start a new section. I’m trying to just take the plunge and pick up the story from the last sentence I wrote, but it’s hard for me to do that.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Run for the hills! Just kidding. Writing IS a difficult occupation, but if it’s truly your passion, then you know you’re in it for the long haul. Don’t take any connection for granted. Network, make friends, be genuine and reach out to others. If you can get to writing conferences, fantastic. If not, try to glean what you can online, join a critique group, take some writing courses, read widely, not only in your genre, get to know which agents and editors lean toward what you write, and most importantly, never, ever, ever give up!

Everything Claire wants seems to be beyond her reach…

After losing her mother to cancer and suffering a miscarriage soon after, Claire Ferguson numbs the pain with alcohol and pills, and wonders if her own life is worth living.

Adopted at birth, Claire is convinced she has some unknown genetic flaw that may have been the cause of her miscarriage. She must find a way to deal with the guilt she harbors. But exoneration will come with a price.

With her marriage in trouble and her father refusing to answer any questions about her adoption, Claire begins the search for her birth mother. For the first time in her life, she really wants to know where she came from. But what if the woman who gave her life doesn’t want to be found?

For all those who have loved, experienced loss, and lived life’s roller-coaster

Please give us the first page of the book.
Claire Ferguson stood outside Baby Gap, unable to look away from the Christmas display. Red velvet dresses and miniature-sized plaid waistcoats. Tiny suede boots, tiny patent leather shoes, tiny colorful striped hats and scarves. Everything was tiny.

Claire stared at a little red dress, her eyes filling as she imagined and wished for the impossible. People filed in and out of the store, smiling, laughing. Happy. An ordinary day filled with ordinary tasks and lists of things that must be accomplished. She had no such list—just an overwhelming need to pass time quickly on this day that was not so ordinary.

Claire steadied herself and glanced at her watch. Late afternoon. Shoppers jostled by, oblivious to her pain, all in a hurry to get their purchases and conquer the next store in the mall. If only she had a reason to hurry.

“Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” crooned from the mall loudspeakers. Claire bit her lip and cursed Bing. Christmas would be merry when it was over.

Claire tightened her grip around the numerous bags she carried and slowly moved forward. Her heel slipped on a slick patch of tile. She regained her balance before falling, but the effort shook her and sent her pulse racing. After walking a bit, her arms began to burn. Her overflowing shopping bags were heavy but gave a sense of accomplishment. She’d gotten out of bed and had the purchases to prove it.

“Claire? Hey…yoo-hoo!” A woman’s greeting floated above the noise of the crowd.

Claire lowered her head and rummaged through her purse. She popped a few breath mints into her mouth and chewed as she weighed her options.

Pretend she didn’t hear. Pretend to be someone else. Or turn and face the owner of the vaguely familiar voice still calling out her name. Curiosity won out and Claire turned.

“Hi, Claire! I thought that was you.” The woman waved and hurried over. Platinum blonde hair swooshed around her shoulders. “Long time no see. You do remember me, don’t you?”

YESTERDAY'S TOMORROW - Catherine West - Free Book

Bio:
Educated in Bermuda, England, and Canada, Catherine holds a degree in English from the University of Toronto. When she’s not at the computer working on her next story, you can find her taking her Border Collie for long walks or tending to her roses and orchids. Catherine and her husband live on the beautiful island of Bermuda, with their two college-aged children. Catherine is a member of Romance Writers of America, and American Christian Fiction Writers, and is a founding member of International Christian Fiction Writers. Catherine’s debut novel Yesterday’s Tomorrow, released March 15th, through OakTara Publishers.

I'm thrilled to introduce you to my friend Catherine West with her debut novel. So tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.

I suppose there is a bit of me in my characters, but I don’t think a great deal. I like to write about unique characters, and most of them do things I would never do!

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?

Well, I’m not really a ‘quirky’ kind of gal, but I guess recently – I decided to make my launch party into a ‘60’s themed party, since that is when the book takes place. I’m sure my friends and family think that is pretty quirky!

When did you first discover that you were a writer?

I’ve always loved to write. I think probably after I completed my first full length novel in my twenties, and my sister-in-law, an avid reader, told me it was as good as anything she was currently reading.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.

I love to read romance, CBA and secular. I love general fiction as well as some historicals. I love British Fiction as well, Rosamunde Pilcher, Maeve Binchy, Barbara Taylor Bradford.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?

I take breaks by walking with my dog, gardening, reading and watching movies. And of course prayer helps!

How do you choose your characters’ names?

Sometimes this is easy and they pretty much tell me who they are. Other times I’ll pick names and end up changing them after a few weeks of writing. I try to go for unique names, but not ‘weird’ ones. Most of the time they’re pretty ordinary though.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?

Right now I’m most proud of my first published novel. I had a lot of hard days when I honestly didn’t think it would happen. I’m really pleased I stuck with it.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?

I’m a dog person, so I’d have to say dog. They are loyal, faithful, happy, and always eager to please.

What is your favorite food?

I love a roast lamb dinner, and of course anything Italian is just fine with me!

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?

I started out writing in past tense and head-hopping, so I had to work really hard to overcome those habits.

Tell us about the featured book.

Yesterday’s Tomorrow

Vietnam, 1967

Independent, career-driven journalist Kristin Taylor wants two things: to honor her father's memory by becoming an award-winning overseas correspondent and to keep tabs on her only brother, Teddy, who signed up for the war against their mother's wishes. Brilliant photographer Luke Maddox, silent and brooding, exudes mystery. Kristin is convinced he's hiding something.

Willing to risk it all for what they believe in, Kristin and Luke engage in their own tumultuous battle until, in an unexpected twist, they’re forced to work together. Ambushed by love, they must decide whether or not to set aside their own private agendas for the hope of tomorrow that has captured their hearts.

Please give us the first page of the book.

There is a Prologue, but this is from Chapter One.

Chapter One

February 1967, Saigon, Vietnam.

Kristin shuffled along in the line of travel-weary passengers as they exited the plane. She blinked as her eyes adjusted to the daylight, shook off sleep and gripped the handrail of the metal steps. When her shoes hit the tarmac of Tan Son Nhut airport, her hand went to the intricately carved cross that hung around her neck. She rubbed the thick gold between her thumb and forefinger and took in her surroundings.

The early morning sun’s rays jack-knifed off the tarred surface. A stifling heat sliced through her sneakers, raced through her, and smothered her in its welcoming embrace.

Teddy was right. It was hotter than hell.

The pungent smell of gasoline flooded her senses and stung her eyes. Kristin pulled on dark sunglasses, tried not to breathe too deeply, and looked down the runway. She stepped aside to let others pass as she surveyed the area, the slow thumping of her heart picking up its pace as she began taking mental notes.

Aircraft of varying description lined the blacktop. Everything seemed larger in real life, from helicopters to small fighter jets to the Pan American Boeing 707 that had brought her here. Gray, green, and brown flying machines blended together in an impressive show of US military power.

It was impossible to imagine jumping aboard any of them. Or jumping out.

Army personnel moved smoothly around the aircrafts, refueling and working on engines. Rows of enlisted men lined up to board a larger plane also being loaded with cargo. Soldiers sweating in the heat heaved supplies on to the plane’s cave-like interior. Commanding Officers barked like dogs to be heard over the noise as they rounded up their companies. She scanned the groups of soldiers and searched their faces. Some looked anxious, their eyes shifty even as their bodies remained stiff, while others seemed impassive, stone-faced and resolute as they stood between the world they knew and a world gone crazy.

During a lull in the activity on the tarmac, a low rumbling somewhere off in the distance reached her ears. Her throat tightened as she turned toward the outline of mountains beyond the airstrip.

The sound of war needed no introduction.

Very gripping. How can readers find you on the Internet?
