SWEETWATER ROMANCES - A Valentine Sampler - Various Authors - One Free Book

TOOLBOX TRINKETS
How did the idea for the collection come about?
In early December, I was studying the market and noticing how the Christmas collections had taken off with high sales. Two random thoughts collided—first, we are writers of romance and, second, an upcoming holiday is all about romantic affection. What if we could get something short and sweet ready in time for Valentine’s Day? Each piece would be like a chocolate in a sampler box, the first one making the reader want to “taste” the next. After one night of mulling it over, I pitched the idea to publisher Cynthia Hickey. She posted it on our authors’ Facebook group to test interest. I think the collection filled in half an hour! She set the length at 6,000 words and then slammed down the deadline –January 1st! Oh my, that put all of us in a scramble!

Are the stories connected, and if so, how?
We decided the stories would be linked, and the interacting characters would be the merchants in town. We designed a town square where the proprietors could be right down Main Street from each other. The next thing we had to do was claim a business. I wanted the town hardware store, and then Cynthia picked the candy shop, Renee the café, Martha Lou the bakery, Brandi the boutique, Jennifer the vet clinic and Christina the photography studio. Before it could grow into a tangled mess, Cynthia sent out a message—name and describe your hero and heroine!

What’s the hardest thing about writing a part of a collection?
From my perspective as a writer, I wanted to protect the integrity of the other writer’s story. For instance, my heroine Willow goes into the candy store to buy her hardware guy Evan a treat. Cynthia’s character Lori interacts with her. I knew Lori’s name and what she looked like, but lacked any information about Sweet Nothings candy shop. Cynthia gave me a general description of the shop layout, so I fleshed out the scene. Once completed, I forwarded the scene right to her for review and approval. How funny looking back, she mainly changed the apron Lori wore to red and ruffled. So Valentine-y!

To prevent any inconsistencies, I became the editor/reviewer for the collection. Our use of names turned into a comedy of errors, so I focused on that aspect to make sure the right guy showed up with his correct love interest whenever two story-lines merged. Secondary characters also had to coordinate – even off-the-page characters merely referred to had to match. The brick-and-mortar town seemed to become authentic the more we described it, which was fascinating to watch develop.

How did collaborating with the team impact you?
By the third story I reviewed (Renee’s), I realized how sweeping the creativity process is in the discipline of fiction writing. The imagination aspect was epic, as we started with a rote description of a town built around a central park. When the authors populated it with characters that began to share their hopes and dreams, it truly breathed life into the setting. That sensation was elevating for me, making me want to read on to know more. By the way, Renee Riva is so genuinely funny, and it leaks into her writing with understated charm. Everybody in town comes to see her heroine, Shelby, at the cafe!

What did you want the reader to take away?
I remember thinking, if we can get this to be seamless, the reader will be taken away to Sweetwater and anticipate the arrival of Valentine’s Day just like our townsfolk. We can hold them there suspended and let them enjoy the romance of it all. Our job was to sweep them away! Most of the couples end up at Annie Bob’s B and B for a table-for-two buffet on Valentine’s night. You’d think that outcome would be predictable, considering the common setting, but the readers are in for a real treat! Questions will be asked, but maybe not the ones you might expect! This collection is all about love, whether it lands at first sight or takes a decade to mature. Romance readers are sure to be pleased with the variety offered by this sweet sampler.

Please give us a peek at your story.
Toolbox Trinkets begins with the quintessential query into love: a newcomer, Willow Stevens, peeks into the hardware store’s front window from Main Street and sees shopkeeper Evan Masterson laboring over an intricate project at the front counter. Dubious about finding help for a complicated remodeling job, she chooses to enter the store questing for assistance and finds so much more. Evan’s capability and Willow’s vulnerability match up in an unexpectedly harmonic project-for-two. That sweet peek leads off the sampler, and romance strikes seven times—all right down the block!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
In the vastly circulating sea of good advice to authors, I think the advice that strikes a resonating truth for me is “write your next book.” So many writers get bogged down with cyclic editing or endless marketing. Yes, there’s much ancillary work to be done, but without a well-written book at the core, it’s all meaningless. Go sit down and write your next book. By the middle segment, you should be thinking “series” or at least “follow-up book.” Writing should be a fresh river, not a staccato set of stagnant pools. Time will go fluid if you devote yourself to the task of completing a full manuscript. Enjoy the euphoria of penning “The End” and then regroup and do it all over again.

Let me wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day!

It’s my pleasure, and thank you.

New in town, Willow Stevens arrives at The Master’s Toolbox hardware store, hoping to get some assistance with a detailed home improvement project. Caught soldering a seam for his latest metal-craft project, Evan Masterson soon becomes interested in another type of bond—right in time for Valentine’s Day. When Willow offers to help with his Etsy page and shares an idea to improve the store’s garden section, how can Mr. Fix-it refuse? Find out why Evan’s toolbox might need a trinket to guard it from here on out.

When romance flutters down on Sweetwater, Kansas, the hardware store marks love’s epicenter!

About the Author
Cindy M. Amos writes inspirational romance from the heartland of Kansas, where living close to the land always leads to love. She enjoys wildflowers, border gardens, and canning produce from the summer vegetable garden. The Amos family owns a five-generation ranch in the magnificent Flint Hills of central Kansas, where the prairie offers endless inspiration for her stories.

CYNTHIA HICKEY
How did the idea for the collection come about? Cindy M. Amos pretty much said it all. It was a very fast turnaround and done more or less as an experiment. If this set does well, we’ll do more holiday themed short story sets.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
This is the advice I give all my authors. You won’t be found if you don’t promote. Advertise, interact with your readers, and write the next book.

She and her husband run the small press, Winged Publications, which includes some of the CBA’s best well-known authors. She lives in Arizona with her husband, one of their seven children, two dogs, one cat, and three box turtles. She has eight grandchildren who keep her busy and tell everyone they know that “Nana is a writer.”

MARTHA ROGERS
How did your story for the collection come about?
I wanted to write about a bakery and a girl who had to bake her own birthday cake because her birthday was on a holiday. Added in the long-time boy friend she’d like to whom she wanted to be more and there was the story. It was fun to write and add in characters from other stories.

What is the hardest thing about writing a part of a collection?
Making sure I had the facts right about other characters and places.

Where can my readers find you on the Internet?

JENNIFER ALLEE
What is the hardest thing about writing a part of a collection?
We had a lot of fun brainstorming the name of the town, then details about different businesses and characters. The tricky part is continuity. We want to have characters cross into other stories to reflect the small town community, but have to make sure they're portrayed accurately. One author, Cindy Amos, read all the stories to make sure nothing was out of whack. That was a big help!

What is the best piece of advice you received as an author?
Just keep writing. Careers will have ups and downs, but no matter what, a writer writes. And I've never doubted that I am a writer. LOL

For the first 10 years of her life, Jennifer AlLee lived above a mortuary in Hollywood, California, one block away from Hollywood and Vine. Over the years, she worked in numerous fields, including as a church secretary and an administrative assistant at a cable company, but whatever the position, writing always became part of the job description. In 2007, her first novel was published. Since then, she's published eleven novels and quite a few novellas with five different publishing houses. While she's thrilled to be living her dream as an author, Jennifer considers raising her amazing son to be her best creative achievement.

Thank you all for sharing this new collection with us. My readers and I love novella collections.

A CHRISTMAS DECEPTION (A CHRISTMAS MASQUERADE) - Cynthia Hickey and 6 other authors - One Free Ebook

Dear Readers, this looks like a real fun collection, don’t you think?

Bio: Multi-published and Amazon and ECPA Best-Selling author Cynthia Hickey has sold over a million copies of her works since 2013. She has taught a Continuing Education class at the 2015 American Christian Fiction Writers conference, several small ACFW chapters, and RWA chapters. She lives in Arizona with her husband, one of their seven children, two dogs, one cat, and three box turtles. She has eight grandchildren who keep her busy and tell everyone they know that “Nana is a writer.”

Welcome back, Cynthia. How did your story for the collection come about?
To me, masquerades mean you can be anything you want to be. I’m also a huge fan of The Phantom of the Opera. There is a scene in the play where he pretends to be someone else. I thought what if a rich socialite had her maid take her place.

Are these stories connected in some way? If so, how?
All the stories have a Christmas masquerade that either starts the romance or fulfills it.

The more I read about it, it’s sounding like more fun. Cynthia, what are you reading right now?
Atonement by Winter Austin

How many other books have you had published?
Counting novels, novellas, and boxed sets, I’ve written 129.

What is the hardest thing about writing a part of a collection?
Making sure the stories relate to each other in the way the collection was planned

How did collaborating with this team impact you?
This was a great group of women to work with. Everyone loved the idea of a Christmas masquerade.

What did you want the reader to take away from your story?
That deception can risk everything you hold dear

Please give us a peek into your story.
Ladies maid Lydia is coerced into attending social functions in place of her mistress. When she meets her mistress’s long-time and handsome friend, she no longer wants to pretend. There are more deceptions at stake though than her filling in for her mistress.

What is the best piece of advice you received as an author?
Write the books you like to read

HEART OF THE EMERALD - Cynthia Hickey - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, Cynthia. How did you come up with the idea for this story?
Being of Scot-Irish descent, I love anything Irish or Scottish. I ran across a book of Five Points and what the immigrants endured there, and thought it would make a good story of a feisty gal who overcame.

If you were planning a party with Christian authors of contemporary fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
Janice Thompson, because she’s a hoot, Gail Gaymer Martin, because she’s the sweetest person ever, Martha Rogers because I want to be like her at her age, Susan May Warren because she’s full of knowledge, Kathleen Y’Barbo, because she loves me, and Francine Rivers, because she made me love the genre.

Now let’s do that for a party for Christian authors of historical fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
Janice Thompson, same as above, Gina Welborn because she makes my face hurt from laughing, Gail Gaymer Martin and Martha Rogers, same as above, Francine Rivers, same as above, and Diane Whitmeyer because her books make me laugh.

Many times, people (and other authors) think you have it made with so many books published. What is your most difficult problem with writing at this time in your career?
Keeping up with my readers’ demands. I’ve spoiled them by being prolific and they now expect quick writing and releases.

Tell us about the featured book.
Heart of the Emerald is about a young Irish lass fixated on revenge for the theft of a family heirloom. She leaves her beloved Ireland and, despite the help of a handsome and kind Englishman, ends up in Five Points, New York. She must discover what is more important…love or a material possession.

Please give us the first page of the book.
May, 1892
Aileen Sullivan leaned over the rail of the Lucania and stared at the ocean rushing by. Occasionally, a spray blew misting her cheeks with a chilly kiss and mingling with her tears.
The purple outline of America’s shore hovered in the distance. They’d left the banks of Ireland behind days ago. It already seemed like ages since her gaze fell on her country’s lush banks and craggy cliffs. Aileen experienced nothing more than homesickness, heartbreak, and the horrors of sea travel now. No more toiling the fields, milking the cow, or feeding the chickens. Instead, she lived with the groans of passengers in the throes of seasickness and lung fever.

Her torn heart ached, one half lodged in her breast, the other on the Emerald Isle. She straightened and took a deep breath of the salty air, then pulled her cloak tighter against the sea breeze.

Fingering the single gold chain around her throat, all that was left of her ma’s precious jewelry, she turned and swiped away the tears obscuring her vision. If only she still had her mother’s brooch, an emerald handed down for generations from first born girl to first born girl. But no, an evil man took it and based his action on a lie.

She stumbled over a coil of rope and gasped, flailing her arms for balance, and smashed into a solid leather covered chest. Strong hands steadied her. She lowered her gaze and let it travel from scuffed boots up past tan pants and a starched white shirt to eyes as blue as Ireland’s sky. This man was not a steerage passenger, and thus Aileen should not force her company on him. Perhaps she had been so lost in her thoughts she didn’t hear the call to return to the lower level of the ship. She backed up. “Pardon me.”

“Are you all right?” The man’s voice rumbled over her like far-off thunder. The concern on his face caused the tears to sting again.

“I am fine, thank you.” She moved to brush past him.

“Please, don’t let me run you away. The ship’s railing is large enough for us both.” The corner of his mouth quirked. “You’re from Ireland?”

She sighed and nodded. “You are American?”

“I call myself American. I’m Samuel Westfield. I was in London on family business and now returning to my new home.” He leaned against a crate. “We should be docking in a few hours.”

Aileen’s mouth dried, and she turned back to the approaching shore. Was she ready to confront Liam Connor and his thieving ways? She didn’t think so. Liam had been such a close family friend that the Sullivans trusted him. Aileen and her brother called him Uncle, until the death of Aileen’s parents and the man’s true colors revealed themselves.

How long would their funds last in New York? She and Patrick would need to find suitable lodgings, but she’d never worked off the farm a day in her life and didn’t have a clue what to do first. What if they had to leave the city and travel across the strange continent to the Wild West?

A DOCTOR'S HEART - Cynthia Hickey - One Free Book

Bio: Multi-published and Best-Selling author Cynthia Hickey had three cozy mysteries and two novellas published through Barbour Publishing. Her first mystery, Fudge-Laced Felonies, won first place in the inspirational category of the Great Expectations contest in 2007. Her third cozy, Chocolate-Covered Crime, received a four-star review from Romantic Times. All three cozies have been re-released as ebooks through the MacGregor Literary Agency, along with a new cozy series, all of which stay in the top 50 of Amazon’s ebooks for their genre. She has several historical romances releasing in 2013, 2014, 2015 through Harlequin’s Heartsong Presents, and has sold more than 260,000 copies of her works. She is active on FB, twitter, and Goodreads. She lives in Arizona with her husband, one of their seven children, two dogs and two cats. She has five grandchildren who keep her busy and tell everyone they know that “Nana is a writer.”

Welcome back, Cynthia. Tell us about your salvation experience.
I was thirteen and attending a Presbyterian revival where my uncle was preaching. God called me, and I answered. A few months later, my uncle baptized me in a pond in his cow pasture, along with my sisters. I took Bible correspondence courses in high school, but it wasn’t really until I was an adult that I really understood what a relationship with God was. I rededicated myself in 1991.

You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?
This one is a bit harder, but one of the authors would be Janice Hanna Thompson. We have a blast together! Another would be Diana Gabaldon. I’d like to pick her brain on writing memorable characters. JK Rowling, on creating a new world. Janet Evanovich on how to keep a series running forever.

Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.
No, this is something that frightens me.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?
There is no way I can pick just one time. I’m always doing something embarrassing. I usually laugh it off, to relieve the tension.

People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
I tell them to go and write it. It’s that simple.

Tell us about the featured book.
Betsy Colter's Heart is On the Line

Betrayed by her soldier fiancé, Betsy takes a job as a Harvey Girl waitress and vows to steer clear of military romance. But soon she's falling for her army pen pal, Dr. Spencer Gregory. When a wounded Spencer returns home and rebuffs her friendship and love, Betsy's deepest fears come true.

Though he's a decorated soldier, Spencer sees himself as a burden—one he won't saddle Betsy with. But keeping her at arm's length is no longer an option when Betsy's former fiancé shows up eager to win her back. If their romance is to survive the war, Spencer must set aside his pride and win her heart.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Betsy Colter stared out the train window, refusing to imagine her ex-fiancé Lloyd’s face reflected in the glass. Night fell, leaving the world outside in darkness except for lamps illuminating the train platform. Oh, she shouldn’t be so melancholy. She’d discovered weeks ago that her heart wasn’t as broken as she’d originally believed. Lloyd never did make her pulse race or mouth go dry. He was just … Lloyd, the boy who’d always been there.

She sighed. Well, no more. Now, he belonged to another, and Betsy sat on a Santa Fe railroad train heading from Kansas City, Kansas, to Colorado Springs, Colorado. Or at least she would be once the train started moving again.

Why not venture out and see what the country might have to offer? Her parents were gone. Father had died five years ago from an accident at the mill and her mother only a few months ago from a car accident. As an only child, Betsy had no one to talk to about the path her future should take. She made her own choices, following God’s lead the best she could, and tried to keep loneliness at bay. And now, in her purse sat a contract. She was going to be a Harvey Girl.

I look forward to reading this book. How can readers find you on the Internet?

IN A TEXAS RANGER'S ARMS - Cynthia Hickey - One Free Book

Bio: Multi-published and Best-Selling author Cynthia Hickey had three cozy mysteries and two novellas published through Barbour Publishing. Her first mystery, Fudge-Laced Felonies, won first place in the inspirational category of the Great Expectations contest in 2007. Her third cozy, Chocolate-Covered Crime, received a four-star review from Romantic Times. She lives in Arizona with her husband, one of their seven children, two dogs and two cats. She has five grandchildren who keep her busy and tell everyone they know that “Nana is a writer.”

Welcome back, Cynthia. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?
Letting go and Letting God. It’s something I struggle with in my life and like to show characters realizing things work out better when God is in control.

What other books of yours are coming out soon?
I will be releasing the third mystery to Anything For A Mystery and Killer Plot by the end of summer and have the last Harvey Girl book from Heartsong releasing November 1. I am signing a six book contract with Heartsong that deals with natural disasters in history.

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?
Probably Diana Gabaldon. She is not an inspirational author, but her characterization is the best.

What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?
Hmmm. This is a hard one. Maybe Mother Theresa. She could give me an insight on patience.

How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?
To keep writing. Persistence is the key! That and to keep learning the craft.

KATIE GAMBLE IS ON THE RUN
After her unscrupulous stepfather accuses her of being a thief, a horrified Katie hopes to hide out until she can prove otherwise. But slipping into obscurity in a small Texas town isn't so easy. Not with Texas Ranger Ward Alston on her tail.

Ward's used to getting his man—or woman. But he's not used to the accused being so resolute in her innocence or so beautifully appealing. As he uncovers the truth, Ward realizes this Harvey Girl isn't all she seems. Together, can they evade danger and obey the law of their own hearts?

Please give us the first page of the book.
1910
Katie Gamble cast one last glance over her shoulder. No Amos Moore.

With a grin, she clutched the handle of her satchel and stepped onto the train that would take her to her new home and job in Somerville, Texas. As she moved down the aisle, she found a seat next to a petite blonde with the bluest eyes Katie had ever seen.

“Howdy. I’m Sarah Chapman, and I’m a Harvey Girl.” Her eyes twinkled.

“Hello, I’m Katie.” She stashed her bag in an overhead compartment. The papers in the hidden pocket on her slip crinkled as she stretched to place the bag overhead. She peered at her companion. Had she heard? Although the papers were hidden, she still wasn’t eager to let her other belongings out of sight, even if it was the land deed that mattered the most. She didn’t want to answer any questions either. However, she need not have worried, because the girl continued to chatter to anyone willing to listen.

“You can have the window seat, if you’d like, Katie. The motion outside the window makes my stomach roll. Why did you sign on with the Harvey Company?” Sarah smoothed the skirt of her green dress. “I’m going to find a husband. As the youngest of eleven children, there isn’t much left for me back home in Missouri, and there are a lot of men along the railroad line.”

A husband? Katie hadn’t really thought of that. Maybe once Amos stopped chasing her, she could think about settling down and having a family of her own. “I joined up so I don’t have to worry about where my next meal is coming from or how I’m going to put a roof over my head.”

“You poor thing. You sound like you’ve had a rough time.” A statuesque brunette reached across Sarah and patted Katie’s hand. “I’m Rachel Warren, and while I am searching for a taste of independence, I won’t turn down the right man if he asks for my hand. After all, the Harvey women are bringing refinement to towns desperately in need of morally upright women.” She glanced around the car. “Looks like we’re the only three heading to the Santa Fe.”

Refinement? That left Katie out. Was it wrong in God’s eyes to steal back something that had been stolen from her? She didn’t know. But she would keep it pinned to her underskirts until the day she died, if need be. The deed and the document showing that oil had been discovered on her family’s land was one secret she had to keep to herself. She sat down on the upholstered seat, the cushion letting out a soft whoosh of air.

Katie leaned her elbow on the windowsill as the train pulled away from the platform with a jolt. She rested her chin in the cup of her hand, and watched the prairie speed past. Guilt over her actions warred with the idea she had done nothing wrong. Sure, the land was hers, but maybe she shouldn’t have taken the few coins left on Amos’s dresser. When the man had returned to his room after his nightly visit to the bar, had he yelled? Punched the wall? Hit someone? She didn’t know, but she knew he’d come looking for her. He would never let go of her family’s property so easily.

She tuned out the friendly chatter of her companions and touched her chin, all too familiar with the consequences of his anger. She blinked back stinging tears. Once she settled into her new job, she would evaluate her feelings. If nothing else, she could pay Amos back the money. Not that the dirty scoundrel deserved it, but because she wanted to be a better person than that.

An automobile rumbled along a dirt road beside the track. What would it be like to ride in one? Would a town the size of Somerville have automobiles? After her small mountain community, Somerville sounded like a bustling town.

She turned to the other girls. “Do any of y’all know anything about this town we’re headed to?”

“I do.” Sarah practically bounced in her seat. “It’s a cotton town. There’re some ranches, too, I think. My cousin once worked at the Harvey restaurant there, and she wrote to me all about it. Said sometimes the Texas Rangers come and stay at the hotel. She said they are all the most handsome men.” She clasped her hands together. “I want to marry one of them!”

Rangers! There couldn’t be a worse place for Katie to go.

TAMING THE SHERIFF - Cynthia Hickey - One Free Book

Bio: Multi-published author Cynthia Hickey had three cozy mysteries published through Barbour Publishing, with a novella releasing in March 2013. Her first mystery, Fudge-Laced Felonies, won first place in the inspirational category of the Great Expectations contest in 2007. Her third cozy, Chocolate-Covered Crime, received a four-star review from Romantic Times. All three cozies have been re-released as ebooks through the MacGregor Literary Agency, along with a new cozy series. She has several historical romances releasing in 2013 and 2014 through Harlequin’s Heartsong Presents, and a novella in Barbour’s large Christmas anthology. She is active on FaceBook, Twitter, and Goodreads. She lives in Arizona with her husband, one of their seven children, two dogs, and two cats. She has five grandchildren who keep her busy and tell everyone they know that “Nana is a writer.”

God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
I see more of God letting me live my dream. Back in May, I took the leap of faith and quit the day job to pursue writing full time. God hasn’t let me down, and I see more good things on the horizon.

Tell us a little about your family.
I have a typical yours, mine, and ours. My husband has three children from his previous marriage, I have one. We also adopted three more. Through our biological children, we have five grandchildren. Holidays are a lot of fun with a crowd this size.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
I’m an avid reader. I still read every day, and everything I can get my hands on, even the back of a cereal box.

Me, too. What are you working on right now?
I am writing the final River Valley mystery series book and hope to have it available on ebook by the end of 2013.

What outside interests do you have?
I always have yarn and a crochet hook in hand. My children have benefited from my crocheting with shawls, beanies, and afghans.

I used to be either crocheting or knitting almost every time I sat down to watch TV with my husband. But now the repetitiveness aggravates the arthritis in my shoulders. I miss it. How do you choose your settings for each book?
Most of my books take place in the Ozark Mountains where I grew up, but sometimes it will be a spark from something I’ve seen or heard.

I lived in the Ozarks until I was in high school. They’re beautiful. If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
Laura Ingalls Wilder. I wanted her life when I was young.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
That each main character needs Goal, Motivation, and Conflict. When I started writing, I didn’t know what these three important aspects were.

I understand that. I was just a storyteller when I started writing novels. What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
The Lord is ALWAYS teaching me patience.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
Persevere, learn the craft, and never give up.

Tell us about the featured book.
THERE'S A NEW TEACHER IN TOWN
Charlotte Nelson arrives in the tiny mountain town of Plumville, Arkansas, with big ideas. She wants to mend the decades-old town feud by throwing a Christmas pageant. But it soon proves to be a challenge, especially when three of her students are determined matchmakers. She's in no hurry to settle down—certainly not with the rugged, handsome sheriff.

Sheriff Asher Thomas can handle most trouble that comes his way, but Charlotte's flashing eyes and black curls are a threat of a different kind. Soon she's taking over his time and his thoughts. Will Asher change his bachelor ways for love?

Please give us the first page of the book.
Ozark Mountains 1881
No turning back now.

Charlotte Nelson glared at the drunken man—Hiram Something—beside her. Squaring her shoulders, she gripped the reins and eyed the white expanse between the trees. While snow blurred lines of the landscape, dotting Charlotte’s eyelashes and numbing her fingers, Hiram snored from the wagon seat. Charlotte shivered so hard she thought her bones would come through her skin. She fought the impulse to plant an elbow squarely in his ribs.

Were they still on the road? How could she tell with all the snow? They had to be lost. Her heart seized.

What little light they’d had was gone. Clouds covered the sky, blocking out any stars flickering overhead. Spiders crept up her spine. She was lost in unfamiliar territory with an unconscious stranger. Not how she envisioned spending her first night in a new town.

“Yah!” She snapped the reins to encourage the mules to pick up the pace. She might have been a fly buzzing around them for all the good it did. “Brrr.”

She glared at Hiram. He sat with his head tossed back, mouth gaping. Would the fool freeze to death despite the alcohol in his system?
