A NIGHT DIVINE (MELODIES OF CHRISTMAS LOVE) - Dawn Kinzer with other authors - One Free Ebook of MELODIES OF CHRISTMAS LOVE

Bio: Dawn Kinzer is a freelance editor, and her own work has been published in various devotionals and magazines. She co-hosts and writes for the Seriously Write blog. Sarah’s Smile is the first book in her historical romance series, The Daughters of Riverton. Hope’s Design is the second, and Rebecca’s Song completes the trilogy. Her first contemporary romance, By All Appearances, is set in the Seattle area. The sequel to that story, A Night Divine, has initially released in the boxed set of contemporary romances, Melodies of Christmas Love.

A mother and grandmother, Dawn lives with her husband in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Favorite things include dark chocolate, good wine, strong coffee, the mountains, family time, and Masterpiece Theatre.

Welcome back, Dawn. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
Ideas for several new projects have been competing for my attention. One project is a contemporary romance and the other is a historical romance. Both are set in the Seattle area where I live. Now I need to decide where to put my focus. Only God knows what the future will hold, but I’m trying to follow his lead.

Tell us a little about your family. I’ve been happily married to Sonny for over eighteen years (second marriage for both of us). Due to COVID, he retired last June, six months earlier than originally planned, but that’s been a blessing for many reasons.

I’m a mom to two grown daughters, a stepmom to another, and a grandmother to four little ones. The children have taken over my heart, and I love being Nana. The oldest will be seven in March, his sister will turn four in December, and they live in the area. We enjoy opportunities to spend time together and grow our relationship with them. The other two grandchildren live in another state, and it’s difficult to not see them as often as we’d like, but technology helps with staying emotionally close, if not physically. That granddaughter will be five in March, and my grandson will turn two on our shared birthday in December.

I so love living near all our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They are such blessings. Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how? Before focusing on my writing career, I used to be an avid reader in a variety of genres—romance, comedy, mysteries, suspense, fantasy, science fiction, general fiction, etc. Now with so much time focused on writing and also editing for other authors, I don’t read nearly as much as I did in the past. Not because I don’t enjoy it, but after spending many hours with words every day, my eyes can’t take reading for additional hours at night and into the early morning like they used to when I was younger. Because of limited time, I tend to read more contemporary and historical romances than other genres because I want to be aware of what my fellow authors are currently writing, and I learn a lot from them.

What are you working on right now? There seems to be a growing interest in audiobooks, but it’s expensive to hire someone to narrate and edit them. So as an indie author, I’m learning how to record my own. It’s challenging to learn all the ins and outs, and I don’t know how this new adventure will end, but I won’t know unless I try. Right?

Right. I’ve had several books done through ACX with shared royalties. What outside interests do you have? I enjoy watching movies, seeing live theater, planting flowers in my yard, and hiking. We have fantastic, beautiful trails in the Pacific Northwest. Music has always played an important part in my life, and I served as a vocalist for a contemporary worship team for many years, but I’m currently taking a break from role.

How do you choose your settings for each book? So far, my settings have all been familiar. My three-book historical romance series, The Daughters of Riverton, takes place in a fictional town. The location and characters were inspired by my rural hometown in Wisconsin that experienced some glory days in the early 1900s. My contemporary romances—By All Appearances and A Night Divine—are both set in the Seattle area where I live.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why? I would love to spend an evening with Louisa May Alcott and talk about her life and writing. I discovered Little Women as a young girl, and each character in the book impacted me in different ways. The story has remained a favorite, and it’s one of the few books in my life that I’ve read multiple times.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels? Although a few gifted writers experience overnight success, the journey is long and hard for most.

It is, but when we hear how one of our books helped change someone’s life drastically, it’s worth every minute. What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now? I’m learning to be content in all things and to relax. It’s good to have a strong work ethic, but it’s also important to slow down and enjoy the life God has given us.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful? Continue studying the craft of writing. There are always ways to improve—challenge yourself to be better.

Despite disappointments, don’t give up. Instead of focusing on publication only, enjoy the journey. Some of the best and rewarding moments will come along the way, and the friendships that are made can be lifelong and priceless.

Tell us about the featured book. A Night Divine
is the sequel to my contemporary romance, By All Appearances, but it can be easily read as a stand-alone. Readers wanted more of the Tates, and I felt this Christmas novella was the perfect way to give another member of that family her own story.

One chilly December night, a tragedy connects successful model Camryn Tate and outreach minister Trace Gardner. As they share a common mission serving the homeless on the streets of Seattle, they provide more than food—they offer hope. But as Christmas Eve approaches, secrets have the potential to break Camryn’s heart.

Currently, A Night Divine is found exclusively in the Melodies of Christmas Love boxed set for Kindle. The set contains 7 new contemporary romances by 7 authors. Each story was inspired by a different Christmas carol.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Friday nights were made for putting the week’s grind to rest, and Camryn Tate was eager to leave her schedule-driven day behind. The intimate gathering at the nearby wine bar would provide escape from the latest conflict with her mother. Eva Tate was not only the founder of the successful Tate Modeling Agency, she was also Camryn’s boss.

With Thanksgiving checked off the calendar less than twenty-four hours ago, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” played softly in the elevator as it descended from the fifty-fourth floor, which housed the agency, to the first, soothing Camryn’s nerves. She and her mother had disagreed on a last-minute job offer—a photo shoot in New York on December 24. Why couldn’t Mom understand that Camryn didn’t want to spend Christmas away from home?

Her mother was welcome to party with colleagues, but Camryn wanted to enjoy the holiday with her dad, sister, and brother-in-law, especially now that her relationship with Liana felt sisterly again after years of friction between them. She’d missed the close friendship they’d shared as little girls, and recognizing her part in their rift, Camryn now welcomed opportunities that helped rebuild what had once been demolished.

The doors slid open, and Camryn stepped into the open-spaced lobby, where three twelve-foot artificial trees stood adorned in white, silver, and crystal ornaments. The clear lights, draped perfectly on the branches, twinkled like a star-studded sky on a cloudless night.

Camryn still appreciated her father’s tradition of cutting down a Douglas fir on the family’s estate outside of Seattle. The evergreen filled his home with an enticing fresh scent, and he insisted the tree be covered with messy handmade ornaments Camryn and Liana had created over the years. It was no secret that their surgeon father was sentimental beneath his professional exterior.

Ignoring the curious stares, Camryn strolled past several people waiting in line at the lobby’s coffee stand. Funny. She used to soak in the attention her camera-ready appearance drew, but now she swallowed hard at the envy in their eyes. She’d learned so much about herself this past year and the shallow life she’d once led. For years Camryn had been self-absorbed, and that revelation had created inner shame and emptiness.

Determined to shift from that unhealthy mindset, she’d spent considerable time contemplating mental, emotional, and yes, even spiritual changes that needed to take place. Her dad was facilitating the God piece, and she’d even started attending church with him several times a month.

George, the building’s night security guard, stopped Camryn before she ventured farther. “Ms. Tate, I wanted to warn you. There’s…someone waiting for you outside.”

Why would anyone choose standing in the cold over finding a comfortable chair or grabbing a latte at the Starbucks inside?

BY ALL APPEARANCES - Dawn Kinzer - One Free Book

Welcome back, Dawn. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I write Christian fiction because I believe in the power of story to comfort, challenge, and inspire. I know stories that include real struggles and hurts, while still offering hope, can change lives.

However, I never set out to write romance. I planned to write women’s fiction—stories that focused on female relationships and today’s issues. But what naturally poured out of me fit into the romance genre.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
One of the happiest days of my life was when my first child was born and I became a mom. I was in awe, and that day completely changed my focus and purpose. Then children were followed by grandchildren, and they blessed me even more!

How has being published changed your life?
Publication can validate your work, and I think I’m taken more seriously as a writer by not only people in the industry, but also by friends and family. It’s been rewarding to learn that readers are enjoying my novels, but it means even more to know that they’re being impacted by my stories. To get that kind of feedback makes me believe that I’ve found my calling.

What are you reading right now?
I’m currently reading a series of Christmas novellas by Lynnette Bonner. She’s releasing seven—one a week!

What is your current work in progress?
I recently joined six other authors in a project. We’ll be offering a boxed set of seven contemporary novellas in 2020, and they’ll all be new Christmas romances.

What would be your dream vacation?
I love theme parks. So, one dream vacation would be a week at a Disney resort and time to play in Disneyland or Disney World while also having time to relax.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
When I wrote my three-book historical romance series, The Daughters of Riverton, the setting was inspired by my Wisconsin hometown. The idea for the series came from renewing my interest in the town’s history, so the location for the stories was a no-brainer. Since I was third-generation to be raised there, I was already familiar with the surroundings.

After living in the Seattle area for twenty-five years, I wanted to share what I love about the Pacific Northwest. We’re also told as writers to write what we know! I still needed to research pieces, but it helped to live here while creating settings for By All Appearances, my contemporary romance.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
I would spend the evening with my eighty-seven-year-old dad. My mom passed away a year ago, and although people try to drop in or call, the days and nights get long for him. He lives thousands of miles away in another state, so I only get to physically spend time with him once or twice a year.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
I enjoy planting and growing flowers in the spring and summer. An abundance of colorful blooms makes me happy! I’m a fan of HGTV, and I have a need to be creative, so sometimes that results in making changes around the house. However, my husband and I have agreed that at some point, we need to stop remodeling!

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
I struggle with staring at a blank page and starting a new article or book. It can be paralyzing, even if I’ve outlined the project. The only way to get past it is to start typing. Once I begin, the words start to flow.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Take your time to learn the craft and don’t be in a rush to submit your book to an agent or publisher—or to self-publish. Read books on writing, attend workshops and conferences, and make friends with other writers. Genuine friendships made in the business are blessings! Not only because you can learn from those with more experience, but because in the Christian writing community, people are willing to give the support and encouragement needed to keep going in this tough industry. Those friendships may turn out to be the best part of your journey!

Tell us about the featured book.
By All Appearances is a contemporary Christian romance novel set in Seattle about an attractive special events planner from a wealthy family and a disfigured musician whose lives have not gone according to plan.

Back Cover Copy …
Liana Tate, a special events planner grew up in a high-profile family. No matter what she does, Liana feels she never measures up.

Bryan Langley, a talented musician, was close to signing a recording contract when a barn fire left part of his face severely burned. He survived, but his career did not.

When Liana’s father hires Bryan as a caretaker on the family estate outside of Seattle, Liana’s and Bryan’s lives become entangled. He risks public humiliation for Liana’s success, and she encourages him to use his musical gifts, despite his reluctance. Thrown together, will they achieve their elusive dreams? And will the two find the love and acceptance they yearn for, or will their actions only drive each other away?

Please give us the first page of the book.
If Liana Tate’s instincts proved right, fantasy could change her reality.
She dropped her purse and car keys on the oak desk covered with stuffed binders, fabric swatches, and catering menus. The antique furniture looked out of place, considering its contemporary surroundings in her home. But her grandfather had penned stories at that desk—Liana couldn’t part with it.

Six months. She blew out a stream of air and rubbed her temples. What was she thinking? Stubborn pride had taken the place of common sense. Earlier that evening, while meeting with the hospital gala committee, she’d jumped in over her head and now needed a lifeboat to save her. The commitment involved rescuing one of the most anticipated yearly events in Seattle from sinking. With her reputation as an event planner on the line, if the revised plan failed, she’d be tempted to hide out deep in the Cascades.

If successful, she’d have all the clients she could handle. Then maybe she could finally afford an office in the city and an assistant to go with it. She slumped against the desk. In her heart’s secret and deep-rooted insecurities, she knew everything—including one day having a fancy office—came down to proving she was worthy of belonging to her high-profile family.

Even more important than a personal career boost, funds raised during the event would provide care to thousands of patients, regardless of their ability to pay. Liana couldn’t fail those needing treatment at the adult and pediatric trauma center. She could only imagine the stress and heartbreak of sitting by a child’s hospital bedside, fearing your family might be turned away when all resources were drained.

SARAH'S SMILE - Dawn Kinzer - One Free Book

Dear Readers, I’m thrilled to introduce you to Dawn Kinzer. We’ve been online friends a long time, and we’ve had face-to-face encounters at ACFW national conferences. A few times she, Gail Sattler, and I shared a room. I really love her, and I’m excited about her debut novel, Sarah’s Smile.

Welcome, Dawn. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
There’s always something of myself in my characters when it comes to their desires, hopes, or struggles. In Sarah’s Smile, the heroine yearns to leave her small rural town, be independent, and make a difference in the world. She believes becoming a missionary will be the answer to filling those inner needs. I struggled with those very things as a young woman. The characters in the story also deal with various forms of forgiveness—the grace to forgive others, the willingness to forgive, and the ability to forgive themselves. I’ve lived all three scenarios many times.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
One evening, girlfriends and I dressed in gowns. Then we took a rented limo into Seattle and dined in the restaurant at the top of the Space Needle. One friend even wore a tiara. What made it even quirkier was that we didn’t realize it was prom night, and the restaurant was filled with high school students and their prom dates. We felt a little old and out of place, but laughed about the situation and had a good time.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I’d enjoy something like that. When did you first discover that you were a writer?
I’ve been making up stories since I was old enough to read, but I realized that I was a “real” writer after co-authoring full length plays for our church drama group. Those experiences set things in motion to pursue writing more seriously.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
Because I write romance novels, I tend to focus more on contemporary and historical romances. But I also enjoy women’s fiction, mysteries, suspense, and speculative fiction.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
Spending time in nature refreshes me. I’m fortunate to live in the Pacific Northwest where breathtaking beauty surrounds us. Relationships are very important to me, so I take time out to have lunch dates with friends, I escape through reading books or watching movies, and I get a massage once a month to help remove the kinks from sitting at a desk all day. My husband is great at pulling me out of the office and making me take time to relax. I also have close friends who are always there to listen when I need to talk—and pray for me. God and I pretty much have a running dialogue going all day.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
I decide how old they are in the story, then research popular names given to babies during the years they would have been born. When something feels right—it feels right.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
I’m most proud of raising two beautiful daughters who love God, who are wonderful moms raising their children to love God, and who love and honor me. Nothing is better than that.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
I’m partial to tigers because they’re beautiful, intelligent, and strong.

What is your favorite food?
Oh, my … this is a tough question. One of my favorite foods is homemade popcorn with real butter and lots of salt. Once I start eating, I can’t get enough.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
I’m a perfectionist, and I’m also a freelance editor. If I hadn’t finally overcome the need to continually edit my sentences while writing the first draft, I would never have finished any manuscripts. In order to do that, I had to give myself permission to store perfectionism away in a closet for a period of time.

Tell us about the featured book.
The setting for Sarah’s Smile was inspired by my hometown in Wisconsin—a small rural village called Prairie Farm, built along a river back in 1848 by a lumber company. From that time until now, the population has remained around 500 people. I grew up there, as well as my parents and grandparents. My parents moved away for a short time, then returned.

It was a great place to live as a child, but by the time I graduated from high school, I couldn’t wait to leave for college. Then one day, about four years ago, I began to wonder what it would be like to have lived in Prairie Farm during another time. I’d heard stories of past glory days, and as I researched, I began to get a deeper understanding of what I’d dismissed in my youth.  As I wrote the story, I changed the town’s name and the names of some real-life people so I could take more liberties, but most of the places mentioned in the book were real. Some buildings still remain.

The story begins in 1902. Our heroine, Sarah McCall, is waiting to leave for the mission field when the man she once loved steps back into her life. Abandoned as a child by her mother and gambler father, she strives to overcome a tarnished history she didn’t create and a heartbreak she can’t forget.

Peter Caswell returns to his Wisconsin hometown a pastor, dedicated to his four-year-old daughter and new congregation. But no matter how hard he tries to move on with his life, he can’t forgive himself for his wife’s death.

When Sarah learns that Peter is returning to Riverton, the letter giving her departure date for Africa can’t come soon enough for her. They were best friends—she loved him and supported his dreams—but he married another and broke her heart. Although ten years have passed since he left Riverton, Peter hopes Sarah still cares enough to give him a second chance. But a charming newcomer pursues her affections—and Sarah’s childhood nemesis manipulates her way into Peter’s life.

The question that needs answering: Will Sarah and Peter will find their way to forgiveness and each other, or will past mistakes make a life together impossible?

Please give us the first page of the book.
Riverton, Wisconsin
May 1902
The doors to the blacksmith shop up ahead were flung wide open. The bellows’ clicking and the forge’s gentle roaring alternated with a hammer’s ring on an anvil. The scent of hot iron wafted in the breeze. A tall, familiar figure emerged from the smoky darkness—a silhouette in the bright, early morning sunlight. Sarah McCall, scurrying to the Home Store, halted, as though she’d run into an invisible wall.

Her rapid heartbeat throbbed in her ears, and her breath caught, but neither related to running several blocks. He looked her way and cocked his head. Recognized. Trapped. Fleeing was not an option.

Dressed in a dark gray suit fitting for a man of the cloth, Peter Caswell stepped toward her, like someone dead to her brought back to life. Her own Lazarus. His shoulders had broadened since she’d last seen him, and his face had thinned, but his confident stride remained.

The physical distance between them these past ten years had been a blessing—a way to bury the heartache and give herself time to heal. But with his return, she had no choice but to see him. If Sarah didn’t know better, she’d think God was playing a cruel joke. The man she loved had finally returned . . . but not for her.

I can’t wait to read the rest. How can readers find you on the Internet?
