SPRING RAINE - Delia Latham - A Book Giveaway

Welcome back, Delia. Tell us about your salvation experience.
What a precious memory! I was seven years old. My father’s brother pastored a church in our neighborhood, and my parents had been attending that church for about a year when I asked to be baptized. My parents agreed, and my pastor-uncle baptized me in the precious name of Jesus. I still remember how my heart beat a timpani rhythm while he placed my hands over my nose and mouth, and spoke the familiar words I’d heard him say before other baptismal ceremonies. He dipped me all the way under the water, and I came up speaking in another tongue. It was the most amazing, unforgettable experience of my life!

My salvation experience was when I was 7 years old, too. You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?
  • Mac Lucado. No one says anything more beautifully and more “to the heart” than this man. How does he do it? I’d love to hear, from the man himself, about his writing journey, and how he comes up with such amazing, heart-stirring, life-changing turns of phrase.
  • Beth Moore. She’s amazing, both as a writer and a speaker. I’d love to learn a little about both from her, in a relaxed setting like a private retreat.
  • Stephen King. Surprising, I know, but he’s a successful, riveting author who’s scrabbled his way from the bottom to the top. A lot of hard-earned writing wisdom is stowed away in that admittedly dark brain. I’d love to shine a light on it and take away a bunch of gold nuggets.
  • Debora Coty. Someone needs to be there to make us laugh, and besides…Deb’s a really good writer.
  • Tanya Stowe. I can’t imagine planning a writing retreat without including my critique partner, co-author and friend, from whom I’ve learned so much on the craft of writing.

Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.
I don’t speak often, and I wouldn’t consider it a ministry, per se. Most of my speaking gigs are writing-related. Occasionally I do share a spiritual topic with a church group, and again, I do find a great deal of satisfaction in doing so, but my real ministry is in writing.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?
Hmmm….I can’t really think of anything, so I must not have yet experienced a truly embarrassing writing-related moment. Well, there was the time I sent a very private message to the entire Pelican Book Group author loop…but that was more horrifying than embarrassing. I learned a valuable lesson that day, though. I’m much better now about double-checking my recipient list before hitting send on an email!

People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
I always say, “There’s no time like the present. Start writing.”

Tell us about the featured book.
Spring Raine is the first novel in a 4-book series called Paradise Pines. The series takes place in Cambria—a charming, seaside village on California’s Central Coast. My husband and I have a friend who has generously shared her Cambria home with us on numerous occasions, and we’ve come to love this little town, and the surrounding area. For a romance writer, Cambria holds so many possibilities for creativity. And I have to admit, writing while sitting in our friend’s living room, with the window open to the sound of the ocean…well, there’s nothing else like it! I simply had to build a series around this much-loved getaway location.

Here’s a blurb from Spring Raine:
An uncharacteristic, last-minute decision to do something “wild and crazy” before entering the stressful world of forensic science sends Raine Presley to Cambria, California. Against a cloud of disapproval from her slightly manipulative, over-protective parents, she signs a seasonal lease at the beautiful Paradise Pines Lodge...and winds up over her head in life and love.

Declan Keller’s just minding his own business—literally—when Raine drops into his world and turns it upside down. He’s far too busy carving beautiful shapes out of chunks of wood to be babysitting a gal from Pasadena. Even so, his father’s promise to an old friend obligates him, despite a looming deadline that could make or break his career in the art world. He’s praying for anything but Raine when she comes along.

Neither Declan nor Raine is prepared for the seemingly divine influence of Paradise Pines—and Miss Angelina Love. A mysterious lady who may or may not own the lodge, Miss Angie possesses an amazing talent for mending ruffled feathers, spouting proverbs, and somehow bending even the most determined of hearts to the power of love.

Please give us the first page of the book.
For a moment she couldn’t breathe, and then the barest whisper passed her lips—half spontaneous praise, half simple awe. “Oh my…I’ve found Paradise!” From within her sporty little red convertible, Raine Presley peered through a misty early March drizzle at the most beautiful piece of land she’d ever seen. Paradise Pines Lodge. Her home for the next few months.

Aside from the forest of tall Cambria pines, which she had expected to see, the grounds boasted a huge number of beautiful old sycamore trees—tall, stately, and dripping with silvery Spanish moss. Moonlight glowed through the lacy fingers of hanging flora, creating a somewhat haunting air, and a tiny shiver made its way up her spine. But not enough to make her turn and leave. The beauty far outshone the slight spookiness of moss in moonlight.

Square in the center of the surrounding forest of variegated tree species, many of which Raine found unfamiliar, the lodge itself demanded far more than a passing glance. The website had described Paradise Pines Lodge as “spacious.” Raine chuckled as she pulled her car under the east carport, as she’d been directed. Spacious was a blatant understatement. The place was huge, and yet warmth and welcome radiated from within. Lights shone from every facing window—and they were many. Two chimneys, one on each end of the lodge, sent thin plumes of smoke spiraling into the sky.

THE FIRST NOELLE - Delia Latham - One Free book

The First Noelle blurb:
Noelle Joy stopped celebrating Christmas ten years ago, when Trevor Holden skipped out on their long-planned Christmas Eve wedding. He destroyed her trust in men, crushed her belief in God, and left her cynical about love. Gone is the bright, cheery spirit of the girl she thinks of now as “the first Noelle.” Stronger and savvier, the new Noelle would never be found waiting at the altar for a groom who didn’t show.

When a famous-but-mysterious architect commissions her to decorate his mansion for a holiday event, Noelle finally returns to her hometown. Even as she finds an unexpected peace in facing ghosts from the past, her fiercely private client disturbs her. Michael Holliday is kind and considerate, but far too handsome…and hauntingly familiar.

Holliday didn’t choose Noelle to make his home a Christmas wonderland by accident. She’s the only one who can do the job he has in mind—and once she’s in his mansion, he never wants to let her go. But he’s hiding a secret that could destroy any chance of a relationship with the beautiful decorator.

A false persona. A shattering secret. Can love break down these insurmountable walls?

GYPSY'S GAME - Delia Latham - Free Book

Welcome back, Delia. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?
Angels show up in my books quite often…more a God-thing than because I planned it. Trust also comes into play pretty often, as does forgiveness… accepting God's, and extending it to oneself. Sometimes forgiving ourselves for past mistakes is harder than extending pardon to others.

What other books of yours are coming out soon?
Gypsy's Game is the third and last book in my Solomon's Gate Series. I'm very excited about this one—it's been a long wait. J

I have a novella coming out in a Valentine anthology for next year, and a novelette that will be a Christmas follow-up to that collection.

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?
Hmmm…that's a difficult question. I've never been a star chaser, never one to follow the tabloids or willing to spend hours and hours in line somewhere just to catch a glimpse of another human being, I don't care how famous they are. That said, there are obviously a lot of interesting people in this world. But since I should probably name someone most readers will recognize, I think I'd really like to meet Dolly Parton. LOL  I love her enthusiasm, her positivity, her personality—and the fact that she started out with nothing, and through pure hard work and determination, made an amazing life for herself—and she's kept that down-home flavor that makes it impossible not to love her. I'd like to ask her how she maintains that beautiful positivity, even when you know she's gone through some tough times. She's very much an inspiration.

I agree with you. What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?
Mary, the mother of Jesus. What a special woman she must have been, for God to choose her as the mother of His only Son! I'd like to ask her what Jesus was like as a little boy. Was he funny? Did he laugh and joke and play pranks like all the other little boys, or was he like a serious, far-too-intelligent adult in a child's body? I like to think he was more the former than the latter, don't you?

How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?
My favorite quote, which I first heard from Og Mandino, although I'm not at all sure where it actually originated, is this: Never, never, never, never, never, never, NEVER give up! That's what I say to anyone who's striving for success and running into obstacles at every turn. Giving up absolutely guarantees failure. Your first acceptance letter could come tomorrow…but not if you stop submitting those manuscripts.

Tell us about the featured book.
As I mentioned, Gypsy's Game is Book 3 in the Solomon's Gate Series. It was the most difficult of the three to write, and I think that's probably because I wasn't ready to say good-bye to the Gate!

Here's a blurb:
Gypsy Lovell stands to inherit an enormous amount of money from a father who never gave her anything except a ridiculous name. Even now, he doesn’t make it easy. A stipulation in the man’s will demands that Gypsy be married in order to claim what is hers.

Desperate for the monetary windfall that could save her mother’s life, Gypsy visits a Christian dating agency, hoping to find a temporary husband—someone easy to handle for the required six months, and easy to get rid of when she no longer needs him.

What she doesn’t know is that Solomon’s Gate is a dating agency with a divine connection. What she finds there may save more than her mother’s life…it could very well change Gypsy’s heart and soul.

Please give us the first page of the book.
I will seek him whom my soul loveth.—Song of Solomon 3:2

Gypsy Lovell eyed the framed print hanging across the room. Daintily drawn letters spelled out what she assumed was part of a scripture. No scholar of holy things, she had still managed to absorb a few basic Bible facts in her twenty-nine-plus years, and after her move to Castle Creek, she’d met more religious people than she’d seen in her entire life.

Besides, it made perfect sense that the quote would be a scripture. She was sitting in the bright, airy visitor’s lounge of Solomon’s Gate, a Christian dating agency that had taken the conservative town by surprise—and by storm—some months ago. Sharing the bold red-and-white striped sofa with her was the agency’s gorgeous, auburn-haired owner, Destiny Gallagher, whose round tummy barely made an impression under her oh-so-chic maternity top.

For the past twenty minutes or so, Destiny had bombarded Gypsy with brochures and flyers and heartwarming testimonials, all touting the success rate of this fledgling business.

Gypsy already knew most of it. She’d done her homework. The fact that Solomon’s Gate was a Christian-based company had been part of what drew her here. Though she had never attended a church service, she’d sought this place precisely because she knew most of the clients were religious. That made marrying a stranger, even temporarily, feel a little safer. Men who wore Christianity out in the open like some kind of badge had to be honest to a fault…or complete wimps. Both of those traits suited her purposes just fine.

How can readers find you on the Internet?
I'm not hard to find. Googling my name will bring up a variety of blog posts and guest spots. But these are my "homes" on the Web:

Delia's bio

Born and raised in a place called Weedpatch, Delia Latham moved from California to Oklahoma in 2008, making her a self-proclaimed California Okie. She loves to read and write in her simple country home, and gets a kick out of watching her husband play Farmer John. The author enjoys multiple roles as Christian wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, but especially loves being a princess daughter to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. She loves to hear from her readers. You can contact her through her website or send an e-mail to delia AT delialatham DOT net.

Welcome, Delia. Tell us a little bit about who you are outside of the writing field.
I’m a born-and-bred California gal, transplanted to Oklahoma at age 50. Talk about your “change of life!” J My husband and I moved here in 2008, after he was medically retired (with COPD) and needed to get out of the San Joaquin Valley in California, with its sadly tarnished air. I am fortunate to be able to write full time—a new thing for me, and I’m loving it!

The Solomon’s Gate Series sounds intriguing, with the whole dating agency concept. Is your new release, Kylie’s Kiss, a part of that series? Share a bit about Solomon’s Gate.
Solomon’s Gate is a set of three books, based around a Christian dating agency of the same name. The introductory novel, Destiny’s Dream, focuses on Destiny May, who founds a Christian dating agency in a mid-sized, conservative California town. The two follow-up novels involve a couple of Destiny’s “Seekers,” which is her name for the people who come to her seeking a soulmate.

Kylie’s Kiss, book two in the series, released April 29. I’m excited about this book, and the true-to-life issues in the storyline. Here’s a blurb:

On a dare, Kylie Matthews lands smack in the middle of Solomon’s Gate—Castle Creek’s new Christian dating agency—and she finds herself revealing exactly what she’s waiting for in a relationship: “The kiss that steals my breath away.”

What she doesn’t reveal is her lack of self-esteem or her irrational reaction to facial disfigurement. Neither is applicable to her quest to find the perfect match. But that seemingly superficial malady becomes all-important when her first agency-arranged date is Rick Dale—a man who is everything Kylie is searching for. He’s handsome, smart, fun. Rick has it all…including an angelic six-year-old daughter with severe scarring on one side of her face.

Hard at work founding a therapy camp for young female victims of deformity or disfigurement, Rick wants Kylie to be a part of those plans. She’d love to say yes…but how can she, when every contact with the facility’s guests—and Rick’s own daughter—will make her violently ill?

Kylie is ready to admit their relationship doesn’t stand a chance, but she’s forgotten that God makes a way where there seems no way.

How do you market your work, or does your publisher/s do the majority of the marketing?
My publisher is wonderful about doing everything they can to get the word out and place our books. They are, however, a small press, and I am expected to help with the marketing. That said, even large presses are now asking authors to contribute something to the promotional process, so I don’t mind. I’m grateful to find a reputable home for my books. White Rose is recognized by both RWA and ACFW, so they must be doing something right. J

We’d love a little hint about what’s inside Kylie’s Kiss. Would you share a scene from the book?
I’d love to!

Rick settled into a seat across from Kylie and Clay and sat in silence for a moment, a slight frown drawing his dark brows together. Finally he looked up, first at Clay, then in her direction. “Kylie, I haven’t had a chance to share with you about Lea, though I believe Clay knows a little.”
Her heart sank and her gaze flew to her boss, who nodded. Yes, he knew about Lea, whoever she was. This didn’t sound good. “Who’s Lea?”
“She’s my little girl.” Kylie drew in a slow, deliberate breath, forcing herself to stay calm. So he had a daughter. As long as a wife wasn’t the next announcement, she could handle that.
“You have a child. How old is she?”
“She just turned six.” Rick’s expression softened as he spoke, and Kylie knew without a doubt that Lea was his life. His green eyes, startling against the olive of his skin, met hers without flinching. “She’s a special child, Kylie. Smart, beautiful, charming….” Kylie found herself fascinated by the adorable little self-derisive grin that played about his lips. “And sweet as cotton candy.”
Kylie couldn’t help smiling. “You don’t like her much, huh?”
“She is my heart and soul.” A little sheepish, but unrepentant.
“When do we get to meet this perfect child?” Clay’s grin lit up his craggy face. “Destiny’s already looking forward to it, but be warned—she’s going to try to keep her. My wife has a thing with kids, man. She loves ’em, and they always love her right back.”
Rick laughed a little, but his tone was serious. “I hope she still feels that way after she meets Lea.” He pulled a wallet from his pocket, then sat for a moment, saying nothing.
Puzzled, Kylie watched him run slender fingers through his thick black hair. Again and again he invaded the thick waves, managing to somehow leave them only slightly mussed. Finally he opened the billfold and pulled out a photo.
When he raised his head, revealing the torment in his eyes, her heart nearly stopped. What was wrong with Lea? Whatever it was, did Rick think it would make a difference in how she or Clay might feel about the child? If so, he certainly didn’t give them much credit.
“This is Lea.” He handed the photo to Clay, who smiled and passed it on to Kylie.
“She’s a cutie all right, my friend. You weren’t exaggerating. So what’s the problem?”
Kylie wondered the same thing. The photo showed a partial silhouette of an extraordinarily beautiful child. Unlike her olive-skinned father, Lea was a vision of light. Golden hair, porcelain skin, eyes the color of a robin’s egg. Kylie met Rick’s gaze, mystified by his obvious unease. “She’s lovely.”
“Thank you. I think so.” He pulled out another photo and handed it to Clay. “In spite of this.”
Kylie’s stomach clenched and threatened to revolt. Her boss’s flinch was slight, but unmistakable. Oh, dear God, please help me handle whatever this is with grace. How ironic that her first real prayer in years would be one of such a pitifully begging nature. Somehow she knew her reaction to this photo could mean life or death for her relationship with Rick. How strange that she’d be thinking in terms of a relationship now, when only moments before she’d been ready to concede defeat.
Clay nodded slowly, then met Kylie’s eyes. He held briefly to the picture even after her fingers closed on it. His words were directed to his friend, but his gaze held hers. “You’re right, my friend. Nothing could make this child anything less than perfect.”
He released the photo into Kylie’s grip. By now she did not want to look at it. Something in Rick’s eyes and Clay’s voice told her she could be in trouble. But what choice did she have?
Her eyes moved in slow, jerking movements from Clay’s face to the photo in her hands. She gasped, overwhelmed with sympathy—and total panic.
Another silhouette, shot from the opposite side of Lea’s face. Long, lumpy red welts stained her exquisite skin, puckering her cheek into an inhuman mask. Kylie had no idea she was crying until the tears tickled her face, even as her throat closed and her stomach lurched.
The photo fluttered to the floor as she leaped to her feet. Sending the two men a desperately apologetic look, she flew out of the room with a hand over her mouth.

What can we expect from you next?
I’m working on a book of women’s fiction. It incorporates characters from both Yesterday’s Promise and Goldeneyes—which is surprising, since Goldeneyes is set in 1936 and 1959, and Yesterday’s Promise is a contemporary romance. Readers who’ve read either or both of those books  will definitely be interested in this one. I’ve also working on a short novella for a Valentine collection. Now to find a home for it… J

What advice would you give to budding authors who have published a book and now ask, "What next?"
Start writing your next one! That said, it’s so important to learn everything you can about marketing a book, because you should be doing that even before yours is released. If you don’t already have a platform of followers/fans, start building one—yesterday! Use as many social networking tools as you can efficiently handle, and work them. If you don’t have a website, get one. This will be crucial to your publicity, and if you can’t afford to have one done professionally, there are numerous free web hosting companies online. Webs.com is a good one. Above all, place your career in the hands of God and follow His lead. He sees the bumps in the road ahead that are not within your line of sight yet, and He knows how to guide you through, around, under or over them…whichever is best for your situation. Trust Him!

As a successful author, are there any words of wisdom you'd like to share?
“Successful” is probably stretching it a bit. I’m still struggling to make a name for myself and get my books on the bookstore shelves, because I truly feel that each of them hold a message from God for someone—hopefully more than one someone. J My advice is always, first of all, to write from the heart. Also, I think it’s absolutely vital to a writer’s success to find a place they can call their own, whether that means a fully-dedicated office, the corner of a bedroom, the end of a dining table, or a closet dedicated to the cause. Wherever, whatever it is, go to that place every day, preferably at the same time every day, and write. Write badly if necessary on some days, but write. That’s what writer’s do.

Just for fun, what super power would you like to be blessed with?
Just one? J I think I’d like to be able to fly, then I could visit all the places I’d love to see without having to spend the money to get there.

DESTINY'S DREAM - Delia Latham - Free Book

Welcome, Delia. Why do you write the kind of books you do?

I write inspirational romance and women’s fiction because that’s what God has laid upon my heart to do. I consider my writing a ministry. In every novel, I genuinely attempt to uplift and encourage, to slip in some element of trust and faith in addition to entertaining my reader.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?

Well, there are four of them…the days each of my children were born. I can’t imagine a happier moment than holding those newborn babies in my arms and knowing they were healthy and whole.

How has being published changed your life?

I still truck along pretty much as I did before being published. :-) I think what I notice more than anything is that I am no longer capable of reading a book solely for pleasure, because my inner editor never sleeps. Even when I try to just read, I can’t help noticing errors—typos, head hopping, grammatical quirks, etc. (((Sigh))) Sometimes it’s very annoying! LOL

What are you reading right now?

I’m very much enjoying A Man of His Word by Kathleen Fuller. It’s an Amish tale, and a really good one, I might add.

What is your current work in progress?

I’m working on Book 3 in my Solomon’s Gate Series. Gypsy’s Game is about a somewhat jaded young woman who gets married only to fulfill the dictates of her father’s will and claim her inheritance. Falling in love with her husband is not in the plan, but then, God’s ways are most often not ours, are they? :-)

What would be your dream vacation?

I would love to visit Ireland and see the land of my ancestors.

That's the same reason I'd like to go to Norway and Sweden. How do you choose your settings for each book?

I grew up in California and lived there all my life, until two years ago, when my husband and I moved to Oklahoma. So far, all of my books have been set somewhere in the Golden State…because I know it, and it’s easier to describe areas I’m at least somewhat familiar with. Gypsy’s Game actually has a couple off chapters set in Romania, so I’ve had to do some extensive research for that, since I’ve never been there. I chose Romania for their honeymoon trip because they are both of Romanian heritage.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?

I’d love to talk to Max Lucado about writing. I’ve never read any other Christian author with the ability to speak so directly to my heart. He paints such vivid pictures with words, it simply amazes me! I’d love to sit in on a Lucado class on writing and benefit from his knowledge.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?

I love to sing and play piano. Although I don’t have the breath to do quite as much of it as I used to, it still satisfies something within my heart, even if no one hears it but me and the Lord. I also enjoy designing marketing materials for other authors—bookmarks, flyers, posters, business cards, etc.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?

Procrastination. If I allow myself, I can while away hours doing writing related things, when I should be writing. I’ve discovered that writing is so much easier when I know the book I’m working on already has a home. LOL White Rose Publishing contracted the entire Solomon’s Gate Series when they accepted Destiny’s Dream (Book One). Writing those two additional books has been a breeze in comparison to the first one, simply because I knew it was already set for publication.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?

Write, write, write. It’s what writers do. Find a place you can call your own, even if it’s nothing more than a closet you’ve confiscated for writing purposes, or a corner of the dining room table. Make it yours, and go there every day, preferably at the same time every day—and write. You’ll be surprised how quickly it becomes a routine you’ll be uncomfortable breaking. Also, get involved with a writer’s group, if possible. Find a mentor. Having a more experienced author to offer advice and encouragement is an unbelievable asset.

Tell us about the featured book.

Destiny’s Dream is Book One in the Solomon’s Gate Series, which is based around a Christian dating agency of the same name. Here’s a blurb:

Is a little respect too much to ask at a parent’s funeral?

Apparently it is for Destiny May. Clay Gallagher is built like a small mountain and far more vocal than is fitting when he shows up late to her mother’s “going away party.” When it turns out he’s not even at the right funeral, Destiny demands retribution in the form of an escape from the day’s dreary proceedings. Spending time with a handsome stranger who makes her laugh is more therapeutic than fighting with her overbearing family.

Clay finds Destiny beautiful, charming...and intelligent. So why is she stubbornly determined to open a Christian dating service? Clay has little respect for such a frivolous profession, and doesn’t think the small, conservative town of Castle Creek will welcome such a progressive business. But when Destiny is threatened by an anonymous caller who deeply resents her and what she does for a living, Clay makes it his business to keep the saucy redhead out of harm’s way.

Trouble is, spending time in her company weakens his defenses, and Destiny may be the one thing Clay can’t escape...if he even wants to.

I like it. Please give us the first page of the book.

The first page of the book is a prologue. I’ll give you the first page of Chapter One. Here ya go…

“If she plays that song one more time, I swear I’ll scream!”

Destiny had nothing against “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” but Miss Willard had played it through at least half a dozen times. Destiny was fairly certain the old lady had been born on that organ bench and would most likely die there. For pity’s sake, surely by now she knew a few other songs that would be appropriate for a funeral! She cast a weary glance toward the prim organist with her customary, tight white bun and the face of a thousand wrinkles. How old is she anyway? I’m pretty sure she was at least ninety when I was kid—and that was twenty years ago.

A grin danced at the corners of her lips, and she bit down hard on the offending body part even as she raised a hand to cover it. What on earth would people think if she burst out laughing at her mother’s funeral?

Her nerves felt like a rubber band at the crucial breaking point. With her emotions stretched to the limit, it would be so easy to lose control. Get it together, Destiny May.

Her gaze drifted from the rail-thin organist and bounced off the beautiful, flower-draped coffin. Thank God Mama had requested a closed casket. The private family viewing the night before had been hard. She couldn’t imagine trying to get through this service with her sweet mother displayed up front like a mortician’s trophy.

Author Delia Latham - GOLDENEYES - Free Book

This week and next week, we'll have an extra interview to catch up with my schedule. Today, we're talking to Delia Latham

Delia, tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.

I don’t do it intentionally, but my readers tell me they see a lot of me in my heroines. Maybe I just paint a little of myself into my characters (the things I like about me), then round them out with all the wonderful characteristics I wish I possessed!

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?

Quirky is not a word I would use to describe myself, as a rule. But I do occasionally get in strange moods …. A friend and I once pushed my husband’s little VW out of our driveway at midnight. (It was a standard shift, and I couldn’t find reverse, hence the pushing trick.) We drove it all over our tiny little town (and rather jerkily, I must admit), trying to find a place to buy sodas in a little berg that rolled up the sidewalks at five o’clock. I forgot about the reverse situation, and we nearly got attacked by guard dogs at a service station while pushing the silly thing out of the corner I’d parked it in. All we wanted was a Dr. Pepper out of the machine! LOL

When did you first discover that you were a writer?

In third grade, during an essay contest. The entire class had to write on the same subject: “What I Was Like As A Baby.” I won the girl’s prize, a beautiful bed doll with a pink satin, quilted skirt. After that, it was difficult to find me without a pen and notebook in hand. I wrote songs, poems, little stories – anything I could think of. If the notebook wasn’t in my hand, I was holding a book. I always loved to read.

I believe you cant can be good writer without reading a lot. Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.

Anything from Steeple Hill-type romances to murder mysteries to paranormal studies. I like so many inspirational authors, but I have to admit that my favorite book of all time is still Robert R. McCammon’s Swan Song. Second would be Stephen King’s The Stand. Both are outstanding, unmatched epics of good vs. evil.

What other books have you written, whether published or not?

My first published novel was Almost Like a Song (2006). That wasn’t a positive experience, as I got in a hurry and chose to publish through a company I later learned had a less-than-sterling reputation. (Patience is not my strong suit, but God is teaching me.) I now have the rights back to that book, have reworked it a bit, retitled it, and hope to sell it elsewhere before long.
Goldeneyes was released March 30 by Vintage Romance Publishing. I’m very excited about this one! Reviews so far have been more than encouraging and I’m eager to introduce it to my readers.

I’ve completed a novella, Karissa’s Dream, and am currently working on a novel that will tie together characters and components from Almost Like a Song and Goldeneyes. I had no idea that was going to happen until it did, but I’m liking the route it’s taking.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?

Who says I do? LOL I’ve decided a person needs to be just a little over the edge to survive this crazy world! What keeps me even minutely sane is my trust in God. Without Him, I’d have been certifiably out of my mind a long time ago.

How do you choose your characters’ names?

Most of the time, I don’t. They tell me who they are. I don’t study the phone book and I don’t keep a stack of “Name Your Baby” books in my bookshelf. The right name comes to me along with the development of the character. I give more thought to making sure I don’t have several people whose names start with the same letter, or names that sound too similar, and could cause confusion for my readers.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?

My four children. They’re all good, moral individuals with loving, caring hearts. I consider them – and my four perfect grandchildren, of course – my greatest accomplishment.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?

This isn’t an easy question for someone who’s not an “animal person.” Hmmm. I think I would choose to be a lazy housecat. I’d be petted and pampered, fed and groomed, and “my humans” would consider all this extra blubber just evidence of their outstanding care.

What is your favorite food?

It would take up less space to say which foods I don’t like. I’m a meat-and-potatoes gal – I love food! I guess my favorite is lobster, but I never turn down a chicken breast, either. On the ethnic side, I like Chinese … and Mexican … and Italian … see what I mean?

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?

Planning. I’m a Seat Of The Pants writer. For awhile, though, because I’d taken certain writing courses and attended a few writing groups that frowned on that method, I tried hard to be a plotter. Needless to say, trying to force myself into a mold that didn’t fit choked my imagination and dried up the idea flow. I was dead in the water until I sincerely prayed about it, and God let me know it was okay to just be me. Now I leave the plotting to Him, and He guides me through each project, from beginning to end. He’s the absolute best outline guide!

What advice would you give to an author just starting out?

Write, write, write! Take every opportunity to learn more about your craft. But attending a class every day will never get you published unless you write. Don’t take rejections personally, and don’t let them stop you in your tracks. Get back on that horse and write!

What would you like to tell us about the featured book?

Goldeneyes has been brewing in my mind and in my heart for several years. I grew up in a little farming community called Weedpatch, and I always wanted to use it as a setting for a book. But Weedpatch and it’s history is so much a part of me, I found myself struggling with turning it into a work of fiction. When God helped me overcome that roadblock, it became such a pleasure to share a bit of my heritage with my readers.

Part One of Goldeneyes is set during the Great Depression, when farm labor camps were springing up all over California to house the immigrants from other storm-torn states. Poverty was a way of life, and many people resorted to unthinkable actions in order to obtain the necessities of life. That’s the premise this entire book is built on–one alcohol addicted man resorts to a despicable action in order to obtain his “fix,” and the results of that action reverberate down through time, creating a whole set of repercussions twenty years later, in Part Two.
