Dennis Jernigan Young Reader series book 2 - THE LIGHT EATER

ABOUT THE LIGHT EATER:

The Kingdom of Bren faces a deadly foe. Can the Jennings children defeat a light-eating dragon in time to save the realm?

The Jennings kids are once more swept into the magical land of Bren to fight a monster only they can conquer. The kingdom is falling into darkness under the attacks of Luminaud, a giant red dragon, who draws his strength from the light of life, beginning with the light of children!

Only the great, mystical sword known as Lumen’s Hammer, can slay the dreadful beast, and it can only be wielded by a child. But where is the sword hidden and who can use it against the slithering leviathan?

Will the children unite in time to overcome the dreaded Light Eater or will Bren be dimmed forever?

Full of fiery trials, surprising reunions, and frightening foes, The Light Eater is the second book in the Bairns of Bren series, which chronicles the adventures of the Jennings in the land of Bren, their grandfather’s kingdom. Fans of The Chronicles of Narnia and The Spiderwick Chronicles will enjoy this fantasy series for young readers.

1. What is the significance of the name ‘Light Eater’?

One of my grandsons actually inspired this story. He received a plush toy dragon one Christmas and told me it ate light. That idea struck me like a bolt of lightning as to how it seems that the life God intends for us all is slowly being eaten away by darkness. Our children live in a day and an age and a culture in which the light of the life of God's Word seems to be being consumed by the lies of the enemy. In this story, the light eater, Luminaud, absorbs the life out of living creatures of all kinds, but especially seeks the light of the children of the king.

2. How is the story used to teach children to rely on God?

Once again, the children find themselves face-to-face with pure evil and are sent on a royal quest by their grandparents, the high king and high queen of the land of Bren. The children find themselves alone at times and are encouraged to listen for the voice of the Founder; encouraged to cry out to Him in prayer; encouraged to trust the Founder even when up against the most terrible of circumstances.

3. How do the children manage to face their fear?

One of the ways the children learn to face your fears is to recognize the need for sacrifice. Each child must come to grips with the knowledge that their own life might be required to insure the safety and peace of the citizens of the kingdom. Their grandparents teach them that perfect love casts out fear. They're encouraged to constantly remind themselves that they are loved no matter what. What they discover is that changing the way they think actually has a lot to do with changing the way they feel. They also come to understand the power in unity of purpose. That unity of purpose? The safety and security of the people of the kingdom of Bren.

4. How does the story hope to teach children to have a Christ-centered worldview?

One of my main goals with this series of books is to teach children how to see life - the good, the bad, the ugly - from the perspective of the Founder. In other words, when we see a mountain, God sees a mere mole hill. When we see death and destruction, God sees an opportunity to pour out his grace and comfort and restoring power and love upon mankind. My goal is that children would come to understand that God wastes nothing; that he can take even what the enemy means for evil and use it for something good.

5. What is the ultimate take-away you hope for each reader?

The ultimate take-away for the reader is really very simple: that they would learn to walk in the light of God's Word and love; that they would learn to become spiritual warriors, unafraid to pierce the darkness with the light of God; that they would learn to see life as a grand adventure meant to be lived with joy regardless of the circumstances. I get encouraged just by talking about this story!

HIDE AND SEEK - Dennis Jernigan - One Free Book

Welcome back Dennis Jernigan with a new children's book series. This is the first book in a three-book children's series.

About Hide and Seek: Hide and Seek is the first book in The Bairns of Bren series, a spinoff from The Chronicles of Bren. The Chronicles of Bren details the life and adventures of Lee Jennings as he progresses from a country boy to high king of the realm of Bren. The Bairns of Bren follows the lives of Lee’s grandchildren as they embark on missions of their own in Bren. Young readers will delight in the adventure and suspense of The Bairns of Bren, Hide and Seek!

When the Jennings cousins decide to play hide and seek, they have no idea their simple game will lead them into the magical land of Bren. There, the Bairns of Bren face the daunting task of saving the kingdom from the evil Oddlings. Though the children become separated, they manage to stay together in spirit through the many twists, turns, and surprises they encounter along the way. Will they be able to save the kingdom before it's too late?

What is the significance of playing hide and seek in a mystical, magical land? When children play games like Hide and Seek, they learn how to recognize deception - especially the player who is doing the seeking. In the fantasy realm where this story takes place, there is a literal hide and seek game being played between the children, while a simultaneous and sinister game is being played by the enemies of the kingdom. My goal with the story is that my grandchildren would learn to recognize the deceptive lies of the enemy of God and would learn to respond to those lies with truth.

What types of issues are addressed in this game of hide and seek that are applicable to the character development of a child? At first, it takes a while for the children to recognize they have been deceived. Once they recognize that fact, they set about finding the truth and getting to the root of the matter. They each have different gifts and talents, as well as very different personalities. One of the things I am trying to communicate through this story is how to disagree without being hurtful, how to be kind to one another, how to take responsibility for their own attitudes and actions.

How is the story used to teach children to rely on God? There comes a point in the story where each child comes to a dead end, a time when it appears all hope is lost. In this story, each child is encouraged to cry out to the Founders - a euphemism for God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit - and surrender their hearts and minds to the will of the Founders.

How does the children’s quest to free the kingdom from the Oddlings lead to infighting amongst themselves and how do they resolve their differences? Each child comes to a place in which they must recognize pride and an oversized ego. The children are encouraged to put off pride and replace it with humility, all while trying to view their current circumstances from either the Founder's point of view or of another child's point of view.

What is the ultimate take-away you hope for each reader? The ultimate take-away from this story is to recognize that knowing the truth will set one free, but that we never get to the freedom of that truth until we get honest with ourselves about ourselves. Even when we think we hide from God, we must understand that He loves us even as we hide from Him. My hope is that all who read this story will have a better understanding of how honesty leads to truth and truth sets us free. This book is meant to be a fun read. My hope is that it brings a lot of joy into the lives of many children.

Thank you, Dennis, for sharing this book with my blog readers and me. As a grandmother and great-grandmother, I’m happy to share the books with my own family.

PARKINSON'S AND RECREATION - Dennis Jernigan - One Free Books

Dear Readers, today I’m introducing you to one of my favorite Christian songwriters.

Bio: Dennis Jernigan is a songwriter and author who, with his wife of 40+ years, Melinda, makes his home in northeastern Oklahoma where they have raised nine children together and now enjoy thirteen (so far) grandchildren. Foremost known for his Christian praise music, Jernigan has extended his creativity to the realm of authoring books. He feels a sense of urgency to chronicle his journey with Parkinson’s Disease with the goal of encouraging and inspiring others to live well and experience joy in spite of their circumstances.

About Parkinson’s and Recreation: One Man’s Journey Through Parkinson’s…So Far
Parkinson’s and Recreation: One Man’s Journey Through Parkinson’s…So Far is a humorous yet sensitive look at author Dennis Jernigan’s journey through the rough and rocky terrain of Parkinson’s Disease.

In Parkinson’s and Recreation, Dennis takes the reader from the devastating and dreaded moment of hearing the words, “Mr. Jernigan. You have Parkinson’s Disease,” to the instances of discovering unexpected moments of joy and peace as he came to terms with the diagnosis and symptoms he’s lived with for over five years now.

With open honesty and humor, Jernigan bares his soul about overcoming the difficulties of fear and anxiety that often creep in when breaking the news of a diagnosis like this. Through stories and anecdotes, as well as practical advice, Dennis shares the beauty of his journey so far and the myriad opportunities he’s found to make new and lasting—and sometimes hilarious—memories with his family.

Whether you suffer from Parkinson’s Disease (PD), know someone who does, or whether you have no experience with PD at all, this book will prove to be a breath of fresh air to you in the chaotic world around you.

In a nutshell, Parkinson’s and Recreation is the story of a man who decided to change his attitude and perspective when faced with a dreaded circumstance. It’s the story of a man who has chosen to live life fully…and die well.

A warning to the most pious readers: Jernigan shares a few stories teetering very near the boundaries of good taste (to almost bawdy in nature) but all with the hope of showing the good, the bad, and the humorous as honestly as possible.

Thank you, Dennis, for sharing this book with my blog readers and me. I know there are plenty of people it can bless.

RENEWING YOUR MIND - Dennis Jernigan - One Free Book

Welcome back, Dennis. What would you like for our readers to know about you personally?
In 1981, I left a homosexual identity and have walked in freedom from it for almost 36 years now. From the time I was a small boy, I felt different. As I grew older, I began to have feelings for the same sex. Walking in confusion over my sexual identity for years, I gave into the temptations and believed I was born that way. Expecting peace to come, it never did. Out of desperation and after trying to take my own life, I turned toward God and His Word and asked Him to reveal to me His intention for my identity as a man. What I discovered has been revolutionary in my life.

Tell us about your family.
My wife, Melinda, and I will celebrate our 34th wedding anniversary on August 12. We have raised our nine children (Yes, they are all ours and yes we meant to have them, lol!) in northeastern Oklahoma. We are empty-nesters now but are about to welcome our 9th grandbaby! We are experiencing heaven on earth as a result.

Those grandchildren and great grandchildren (James and I have three of these.) are priceless gifts from God. Have you written other nonfiction books?
I have written several other non-fiction books. My favorite is my autobiography titled Sing Over Me. It details my life from my earliest memories to present-day, detailing my journey out of homosexuality. It is available at https://www.amazon.com/Sing-Over-Me-Dennis-Jernigan/dp/1613141769/ref=sr_1_3_twi_pap_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499880506&sr=8-3&keywords=Sing+Over+Me+Dennis+Jernigan

Another favorite is called Giant Killers. This book takes a look at why David took five stones out to face one giant. Did you know that David and his mighty men had to face 4 other giants according to God’s Word? It is an interesting study and very applicable to modern life. It is available at https://www.amazon.com/Giant-Killers-Crushing-Strongholds-Securing/dp/1578567750/ref=sr_1_1_twi_pap_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499880609&sr=8-1&keywords=Giant+Killers+Dennis+Jernigan

One more I would like to share is called How To Write a Book. This was written because I have so many people ask me how I started writing and how to write a book. It is available at https://www.amazon.com/How-Write-Book-Jernigan-Dennis/dp/1613142994/ref=sr_1_1_twi_pap_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499880828&sr=8-1&keywords=How+To+Write+a+Book+Dennis+Jernigan

Do you have any other books in the works right now?
Yes. I am always working on something. The book I am presently working on with my publisher is a brand new children’s book called The Incredible Growing Basketball Goal. This is the true story of an episode from my own childhood when I asked my dad for a basketball goal. He informed me that we did not have enough money for a goal. As I turned away in disappointment, my dad replied, “But I do have enough money for a basketball goal seed! We will grow one, son.” This book is my recounting of this real adventure and is intended to be read to children by their parents and grandparents. It is a real-life laying-down-of-life story I was fortunate enough to live. It is illustrated by an amazing artist and friend, Debbie Grizzle. She has captured the heart of the book and has rendered pictures that take one back to a more innocent time. Vintage in look, I dare say the illustrations alone will sell the book! This book will be available in mid-September!

I’d love to feature it on my blog. What kinds of hobbies and leisure activities do you enjoy?
I enjoy fishing and exploring in the woods with my grandchildren. One of my passions is writing stories and songs for them. You can find some of the songs on YouTube, like “The Grandpa Song” - https://youtu.be/-R4PST51nFs - or Aussie Lullaby 0 https://youtu.be/3HcM5wyZfz4. You can find the fantasy series I wrote for them called The Chronicles of Bren at https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=The+Chronicles+of+Bren+Dennis+Jernigan&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3AThe+Chronicles+of+Bren+Dennis+Jernigan. My wife and I thoroughly enjoy being grandparents but simultaneously love ministering together as we travel around the nation and world to share our story and music.

Why did you write the featured book?
I wrote Renewing Your Mind: Identity and the Matter of Choice for the simple reason that, due to the many times I share my story publicly, I am inundated with people asking me how I came to such freedom from my temptations and freedom from my past. I needed a concise yet thorough way to do that. Another reason I wrote the book is because I remember being a young man wishing someone would tell me freedom in Christ was possible - but no one ever did. My hope is to point young people to Jesus. He is the Answer. I am just a man.

What do you want the reader to take away from the book?
My hope is that people from all walks of life would understand a few things as they read this book. Every feeling we have is attached to a thought we have thought. Proverbs 23:7 tells us that “as [a man] thinks within himself, so he is.” In Romans 12:2 we the writer urges us “do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind”. These 2 verse became life to me, telling me that I could change the way I feel by changing the way I think. In addition, my hope is that the reader would come away with a new way of thinking about the circumstances of life…that if we choose to see from God’s point of view - even the worst circumstances - we can see hope, restoration, freedom, and victory over our temptations. My ultimate desire? That God would be glorified and that people would define themselves according to God’s order and design rather than by their feelings or whims or cultural norm.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell my readers about you or your book?
In addition to me doing all the talking, my wife wrote one of the 20 chapters included in the book! Although her temptations were different than mine, she discovered the same truths and experienced the same freedom I discovered as she simply chose to think and see life from God’s point of view rather than her own.

Please give us the first page or two from the book.
This is the preface of the book, Renewing Your Mind: Identity and the Matter of Choice:

Preface
My struggles were born of my confusion over my identity. This confusion resulted in chaotic thinking in regard to my sexuality. Before you proceed in reading this book, bear in mind that due to my own past mental struggles concerning my identity, I receive countless requests for help in this particular area. Even if your identity struggle is not of the sexual nature, the same principles of God’s Word—Truth—apply to you and your situation. It is my desire to make this book as simple as possible, yet as comprehensive as to be useful. Since I am no psychologist, I am offering only the wisdom I have gained from my experience in walking out the Truth I am trying to convey in this book. That being said, let’s dive right in to my journey.

I did not want to be defined as an angry man. I did not want to be defined as a fearful man. I did not want to be defined as a homosexual. I did not want to be defined as a recovering homosexual. I did not want to be defined as an emotional basket case—yet at one time in my life, I felt all those things. I felt that those things defined me, since that was the way I felt. Feelings define no one. Feelings simply tell us what we are thinking about. If we can change the way we think, we can change the way we feel. Easier said than done, right?

Just a thought on feelings: Why in the world would anyone allow the way they feel to define their entire being? I sometimes feel like lashing out in anger; yet, I don’t—and I do not call myself an angry person just because I felt that way. I sometimes feel like taking something that does not belong to me; yet, I do not call myself a thief just because I felt like stealing something. I sometimes feel like a loser; yet, I do not allow that feeling to define who I am as a person.

Every feeling I have comes as a result of something I have thought. Each feeling I have is attached to a thought I have had. What I have learned is that if I change the way I think, I can change the way I feel. Some have told me I am simply brainwashing myself—and I have to agree. I have allowed Truth to wash away the lies I have thought about myself and have replaced those lies with right thinking about who and Whose I am. And guess what? My feelings have followed suit!

Don’t get me wrong. This has not always been easy. It is a battle, but a battle worth fighting! Though I have fallen at times, I just keep getting back up. The only failure is the person who falls and chooses to not get back up.

I do not define myself. My Maker gets to do that. I seek Jesus. He reveals the lies I believe and shows me the Truth. It is up to me to put off those lies and to replace them with the Truth. A depth of freedom has come as a result of this mind renewal that I never thought possible. This realization keeps me seeking Jesus for more! It has afforded me something the world seems to think is impossible: self-control.

Just because something feels right doesn’t mean it is, and it—that feeling—certainly does not define who I am.

“Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:1-2)

For the first twenty-two years of my life, I felt different. At first, I felt like I was something less than a real boy. I enjoyed drawing and playing the piano, and I loved dancing. My emotional sensitivity was interpreted as effeminate, and my sensitivities made the other boys uncomfortable…and I felt uncomfortable around other boys. I felt right at home with girls.

When puberty hit and sexual awareness set in, I felt as if I were something less than a man. I felt homosexual. I felt gay. That awareness—that feeling—lasted until I was twenty-two years old. At that age, something wonderful happened—or began to happen—that would change everything I thought about myself. What I discovered was something revolutionary and new, yet as old as time itself.

What I discovered was that I could change my feelings by simply changing the way I thought about myself—about the world in general. One of the first things that changed was my perception of homosexuality. No longer would I think of it as my identity. After that eventful day, I began to think of it as merely a temptation—an attraction that was contrary to the way God had made me, an awareness that somewhere along the way, my thoughts concerning my sexual identity had somehow been co-opted by what I now refer to as stinkin’ thinkin’.

I had believed a lie.

When one realizes they have been lied to—been duped—they feel betrayed. And I certainly felt betrayed. When one feels betrayed, they stop trusting the one who betrayed them, right? This book is my attempt to explain and express the journey toward mental and spiritual wholeness that set me free from something the world says one cannot be free of—something the world says you do not need to be free of. I wrote this book in the hope that someone else out there might be going through the same struggle I faced—regardless of whether that struggle involves their sexual identity or an addiction or a wrong belief system that leads to constant defeat—and find what they are looking for in Jesus: the Answer.

My desire is to operate in complete freedom—what my Maker calls freedom, rather than in what the world calls freedom: man doing what man feels like doing and calling it an identity in order to make them feel better about themselves. Feelings change according to the thoughts we think. Unless and until we deal with the underlying thoughts that lead to the feelings we have, we will never get to the root of our issues and never walk in true and real freedom, and negative feelings will rule the day. It is the man/woman who deals with their thought life—replacing lies for what is true—who walks in true freedom.

This book involves questions I have had to answer through the years that have led me from stinkin’ thinkin’ to right thinking; from feelings of rejection and confusion over sexual identity to feelings of knowing who and Whose I am and feelings of heterosexuality. I invite you to read on and challenge you to ask yourself the questions contained within these pages. I challenge you to see your life and identity from a Christ-centered point of view rather than from a humanistic/man-centered point of view. One leads to futility. One leads to hope. Which will you choose?

GENERATIONS - Dennis Jernigan - One Free Book

Welcome back, Dennis. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
After I complete book one of the series The Bairn of Bren, I will begin working on a new recording of worship music as a ministry tool for the body of Christ. In addition, I am currently writing songs for the journey for book three of The Chronicles of Bren series called Generations. I have already written and released my autobiography, Sing Over Me, but plan to release another volume of my personal story. This time, rather than detailing the pain and sorrow and deliverance from the bondage of sin, I will recount the many good memories of growing up on a farm in Oklahoma and the joy I experienced with my family even in the midst of the pain I experienced along the way.

I’m eager to read that one, too. Tell us a little about your family.
My wife, Melinda, and I have been married for 32+ years and have nine children. No, we are not Mormon or Catholic, they’re not adopted…and, yes, we know what causes that! Our children are all grown now and are blessing us with grandchildren. We currently have 6 grandchildren and are expecting 2 more by September!

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
I think writing has made me much more observant of the techniques and intricacies of story-telling. Writing has caused me to delve into the personal lives of my favorite writers in order to see how their lives informed their writing. I love to read about the lives of others, especially if their stories are inspiring!

What are you working on right now?
I am currently working on a new recording of worship music and am in the process of writing songs for the journey of book three of The Chronicles of Bren. The music for books one and two can be found at www.thechroniclesofbren.com. In addition, I am working on a new series - an offshoot of the Bren saga - called The Bairn of Bren. These stories are written for my grandchildren, my grandchildren being the main characters.

What outside interests do you have?
I love to go to movies that involve adventure, fantasy, sci-fi, or true stories…as long as they are not rated R. Other interests include writing music, fishing, driving around the countryside with no end goal in mind…other than the sheer joy of adventure! I thoroughly enjoy being with my wife, my children, and especially my grandchildren!

We’re just coming off the July 4th holiday. James and I spent a lot of time with our children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. What a joy! How do you choose your settings for each book?
Where I live has a lot to do with it. In addition, I decided where I want to go in my adventure/fantasy writing and allow the final destination in the journey to dictate the setting.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
I would love to spend an evening with C.S. Lewis and delve into how he came to faith and all the inspiration behind The Chronicles of Narnia. On the music side of my life, I would love to spend an evening with Keith Green!

Keith Green’s music greatly influenced my life, just as yours has. What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
I wish I had not waited so long to begin! As with anything one wants to become adept at, practice is required. Just as I used to spend hour upon hour, day after day, year after year at the piano, I learned to do the same with my writing! The more you write, the better writer you become.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
I do not call myself or define myself by my past or by my temptations or by my failures. I am defined by my Maker. That is a truth I have been living by for years. Now the Lord is taking me deeper in that concept in this manner: 1 Corinthians 5:16 encourages us to recognize no one according to the flesh. What does that mean for me personally? When I see another person, I am learning to not judge them by their demeanor or appearance or attitude, but according to how God sees them. If they are lost, I see them as a potential born-again believer/follower of Jesus Christ. If they are angry, I see them as a potential person of peace, etc.

A big turning point in my life was when I asked God to help me see other people the way He does. It’s amazing what you see. What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
Keep writing. Write from a kingdom point of view - trying to see every situation and circumstance from the King’s perspective. Write for the joy of writing and trust the Lord to get your books/writing to the right people. For a book to have an impact it need only affect one other life!

That is so true! Tell us about the featured book.
Books one and two chronicle the formative years of Lee/Leonolis. Book three, The Chronicles of Bren, Generations is the collective stories of the children of High King Leonolis Queen Abila! Each of the nine children have their own unique adventures spelled out within the pages of this book. Each name has the same meaning of the names of my real children and each story involves my view of and vision for the life of each of my children. Allegorical, the stories each involve certain aspects of good character and the wisdom of making right choices and the consequences of not. As always, each drill is endowed with a specific magical gift or power from the realm and each adventure takes many twists and turns and is filled with encounters with fantastical beasts and creatures. I thoroughly enjoyed writing these sagas and found it difficult to rein them in so as to allow time for each child’s adventure! My goal is to ultimately bless my children and the reader with the blessings of purpose, identity, and destiny.

CHAPTER ONE
The Last Time
It had been three years since Lee had last been to Bren. He was 17 now and, try as he might, could still not bring himself to the full understanding of why he had the recurring dreams of a place he could not even name. Yet, whenever those thoughts came - and they came daily – he felt somehow more confident and more joyful than any other time of the day. This, of course, only made him long to understand his daydreams of battle and horses and fair maidens and dragons and elves and wizards and creatures beyond imagination! And beyond these fantastical dreams, he saw through to the Voice of something greater than himself - some One - who seemed to be telling him, “Son, this is your destiny…Walk in it….” As usual, the lack of understanding sent his mind careening into even more daydreams of that far away land and, as usual, simultaneously left him feeling more of who he was meant to be! Yet, he still did not know quite what that meant!

Most if Lee’s days were spent like that now. Regardless of whether he was working with his father’s cattle or working in the hay field or playing basketball or doing his chores around the house, such thoughts were always near the surface of his thought and it did not take much to cause them to leap to the surface and into Lee’s conscious life. During such episodes, he found it best to get away from people and simply work with his hands while sorting through his thoughts. Couple that with the little tell-tale mysteries that kept cropping up in his mind and you have the making of one confused boy-man who was determined to discover what it all meant. The little tell-tale mysteries were actually more like signs from…somewhere…or from someone. At first, Lee had thought they were simply coincidental to his thoughts, but the more they kept occurring the more credence he began to give them. Half-wondering if he was losing his mind and half-wondering where these signs would take him, he began to see them everywhere! Today was especially like that.

The first time he had wondered such thoughts was the day he went fishing at the big pond in the back pasture. As was his custom, Lee was in the practice of noticing the signs of life around him. From the sounds and sights of the various bird species to the numbers and kinds of snakes he encountered from time to time in the pasture, he was able to discern their movements and anticipate their reaction to his intrusion. Without being able to put two and two together, Lee was quite adept at drawing animals to himself and was excellent at recognizing tracks and habits of most animals he had come in contact with on the farm…like he could understand them! Sound familiar?! And he didn’t even know why. He simply accepted it as a gift and was careful to tell no one for fear they might think him a bit mental!

That day, in the cow path leading up the north side of the pond bank, he noticed a track he had not seen before. Although he recognized it as a reptilian forepaw print, it was the unusual size of the print that left Lee wondering. He was used to seeing the colorful Mountain Boomer lizards scurrying around on hot summer days, but their tracks were no more than a fraction of an inch in scope. These tracks were enormous - like dinosaur size footprints! At first, Lee thought someone was playing a trick on him - that the print was fabricated by someone else. Looking around, Lee could find no other human footprints, but did find three more giant reptile prints. And then he noticed that a spot in the green grass blanketing the pond bank seemed to be burned. Singed to bare ground! Like a dragon had been there. Still, he thought to himself what a good trick someone is playing on me - but he could never shake the possibility that what he had seen just might be reality!

SACRIFICE - Dennis Jernigan - One Free Book

Dear Readers, we have Dennis Jernigan back with book two in the Bren Chronicles.

Welcome back, Dennis. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
There are several reasons I write the kind of books I do. I want to leave a legacy for my children and grandchildren and all who follow me. My hope is that they would see beyond the allegorical nature of the writings and see the qualities by which I tried to live my life and then apply those same principles for living to their own lives. In addition, my desire is that all who read the books be challenged to realize and discover the reason for their existence - their purpose - their destiny. Above all, I want the reader to feel that good has triumphed over evil and that the same is possible in their own lives.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
The happiest day of my life cannot be boiled down to one moment in time. My wedding day. The births of my nine children. The wonderful experience of getting to know my grandchildren and writing these books for them. The first time I realized people all over the world were singing my songs in worship to the Lord. Hearing from people who have read one of my books and how God used it to change their lives. Too many days to choose from!

How has being published changed your life?
Honestly, on one hand it hasn’t, as I try to live my life the same regardless of my success - or failure. Yet, it has changed in the fact that knowing others are watching my life from afar makes me want to be the best example of Jesus Christ I can be.

What are you reading right now?
I am currently reading through a novel I am working on, but the most recent books I have read are very different from one another. One is a book on leadership called Leading on Empty by Wayne Cordeiro. Another is the journey out of homosexuality by author Rosario Butterfield and is called Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert. One I am reading in segments is called Learning to Tell Yourself the Truth by William Backus.

They all sound interesting. What is your current work in progress?
Currently, I am working on the first novel in a series for my grandchildren. The new series is an offshoot of my series The Chronicles of Bren. The new series is called The Bairn of Bren. Bairn is a Scottish word for children. In theses stories, my grandchildren are taking up the matters of their parents before them, fighting for the freedom and peace of Bren. My grandchildren are the heroes in these stories! In addition, I am working on music for Book Three in the Bren series. Each book has its own collection of songs for the journey that can be heard and downloaded at www.thechroniclesofbren.com .

What would be your dream vacation?
I have two dream vacations. One would be to tour Iceland and the Norse countries of Europe. Another would be to tour Europe’s castles and the Rhine River region and wind up with a scuba dive somewhere near Greece.

I’m one-half Scandanavian, so I’d love to visit that part of the world, too. How do you choose your settings for each book?
In many ways, the settings of my stories are inspired by the place where I live. When people hear that I live in Oklahoma they think “flat and boring.” Not so. We live among tree-covered hills near a flowing river. I have a large forest on my property that informs the country settings of my stories. In my studio, I have a statue of a dragon and a cardboard castle that I will place in front of me when I write there! I feel like a kid again when I write these stories…and I want children of all ages to enjoy the journeys.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
One of my hobbies involves creating a real land of Bren for my grandchildren. In one area of my forest I have cleared over 2 miles of trails. My plan is to fill the land with statues of fantasy creatures. I enjoy fishing for bass in my ponds and I thoroughly enjoy driving my grandchildren around the property on my John Deere Gator!

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
I have too many adventures and stories in my mind to ever write them all down. I believe our God is so massive that I will never lack for creativity. My goal? To try and see my life from God’s point of view - and I write accordingly.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Do not be afraid to color outside the lines…to take the reader on an adventure that has never been experienced before. Another would be this: the more you write, the better you will become at writing. Psalm 45:1 in the NASB says,

“My heart overflows with a good theme;
I address my verses to the King;
My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.”

I believe that if I walk relationally with Father God and am ready at all times to write down the words He inspires in my mind that He is more than willing to pour that inspiration our upon me. Believe you can hear Him and be ready to write down what He says…and watch the creativity flow!

Tell us about the featured book.
Book two in my fantasy series is called The Chronicles of Bren, Sacrifice. Our protagonist, Lee Jennings, is a couple of years older when he finds himself transported back to the land of Bren in a most unusual way (though seen before in The Wizard of Oz, the story of transport is based on a real-life episode from my life on the farm. You’ll have to read the end of the book to find out that I was not merely paying homage to The Wizard of Oz!). Once in Bren, he discovers that he is now in his early 50s and that he is now the high king of Bren. Wondering aloud as to how he got to that age and position, King Leonolis/Lee is met by a presence - the Voice - who takes him on a journey of re-living his life…and the discovery of all the sacrifice involved in getting him to the place of prestige and power he now finds himself. In Sacrifice, the reader gets to experience Leonolis falling in love, the saga of the dragon wars, the loss of a dear friend, the birth of his own children, and many other adventures along the way! Taking the lessons learned from his adventures in book one, Leonolis learns many new and valuable lessons along the way. As always, he faces many dangers and encounters with many fantastic beings. The ending of this book is my favorite simply because it really happened!

Please give us the first page of the book.
Chapter One
A Mighty Rushing Wind
Lee had gone out early that day to rake the hay his father had mowed the day before. As always, he tended to get lost in his own thoughts, daydreaming and daydreaming for hours on end. More often than not, his dreams ventured off into long forgotten memories of a land far, far away. His memories of the land of Bren, for all intents and purposes, were like quickly vanishing wisps of smoke that lingered briefly around his head throughout the day, never quite lighting for long in his mind’s eye. Such days spent trying to recall those memories was like trying to speak a well-known word but having a lapse of mental capacity to actually commit the words to speech. He never quite got there, but it wasn’t for lack of trying!

The days spent in search of those almost remembered adventures went by far too quickly for Lee. On one hand, the monotony of going round and round those hay fields was not monotonous at all, but on the other hand, he often came away mentally exhausted from trying to recall what could not be recalled.

Lee was a year older since returning from Bren. Everyone could see the change. No one could understand how such a formerly weak, fearful boy could suddenly be transformed, as if overnight, into a confident, strong-of-character young man. Respected by his peers for standing up to the bullies that day and equally respected by his elders because of his work ethic and strong, manly way he looked everyone in the eye, Lee was growing into his manhood. Growing into it well.

Still, if only people knew the inner turmoil he faced. Even though he had the respect of the other boys, the teasing continued. He just no longer gave the tormentors the satisfaction of a response other than to shrug his shoulders and walk away. Mostly his turmoil was a cacophony of messages bombarding his brain. His body was changing from that of a boy to a man—and when he had tried to talk with his dad about it, his dad had seemed more embarrassed than Lee, walking awkwardly away from the conversation. Lee had just assumed that this subject was off-limits—which made him feel ungrounded in his identity, even if he did carry himself more confidently on the outside.

Coupling those thoughts with the struggle to remember all he had experienced in Bren—at least he thought the land had been called Bren—left him mentally exhausted more often than not, but
even this served him well. He figured that he spent too much time trying to figure things out if it tuckered him out that much. Even as a young man, he attained the wisdom to enjoy the journey and to live his life as an adventure. Trying to figure things out, he rightly asserted to himself, would work out in the proper time. Crazy as it may sound, he felt like he had some special purpose in life—like a kingly calling he told himself. Funny, but that thought seemed right to him.

As his thoughts were once again drifting back to a horse he had once known somewhere in his dreams, his mind was suddenly jolted back into the present. He had been so enthralled in his daydreams that he hadn’t even felt the wind come up or sensed the dark clouds that had drifted over the farm. As the first drops of rain began to pour, Lee stopped the tractor and began to turn the handles that would lift the rake teeth high enough above the ground so as to not drag as he high-tailed it home. Disengaging the rake’s gears so the teeth would no longer rotate, he jumped back into the tractor seat and at that very moment, lightning struck so close to him that he froze in fear, his skin growing as pale as the light seemed to be growing around him.

Lightning. Bad news for anyone trapped in an open field. He knew what his dad had taught him. “At the first sign of lightning, get off the tractor and get inside.” This warning had been indelibly burned into his senses the day he saw that old milk cow get hit by a bolt from the blue. One moment the cow had been peacefully grazing and the next she laid dead where she stood only a second before.

And that day there had been no rain and no wind, just one single bolt from the clouds to the ground! But this was different! Lightning was now dancing all around him in the sky and, as if in some crazed choreography, stepping around the field amid deafening claps of thunder. Lee knew this was bad. How could he have been so foolish as to never see it coming?

That really draws my interest to find out what happens next. How can readers find you on the Internet?

CAPTURED - Dennis Jernigan - One Free Book

Dear Readers, I’m thrilled to introduce you to the first book in Dennis Jernigan’s Chronicles of Bren series. When we were raising our children, James and I sang in the church choir. Many of the songs we used were written by this man. I really love his music. He also came to our church back then more than once. He’s been part of my Christian music heritage, and his life testimony is powerful.

Welcome, Dennis. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
In Book One of The Chronicles of Bren, Captured, I saw myself as the protagonist - the main character - Lee/Leonolis. It is very allegorical to my life in many ways. As a young man, I was often bullied but as I grew into manhood - and especially as I came into the understanding of who God made me to be - I was able to overcome so many obstacles in my life. This is how I wrote the character in Captured. Once a victim but eventually victorious!

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
It may not be quirky, per se, but I have been working on a building a fantasy adventure land for my grandchildren. I have several acres of woods where I have built a campground and cleared almost 3 miles worth of trails. Each trail will be named for a grandchild. My goal is to fill this fantasy land with statues of creatures like lions, dragons, unicorns, etc. At the entrance will be 2 stone lions. After a few feet down the trail they will come to a stop sign. Below that stop sign will be another sign that reads “Stop here. Put down your logic and put on your imagination…and proceed.”

That sounds awesome. When did you first discover that you were a writer?
My first introduction to writing came in the form of music. To express myself musically helped me develop the craft of writing in general. In college, I wanted to declare my major as a song writer, but was not allowed into that degree program because they saw no potential in me. I have since had over 400 songs published! As I grew into my gifting to write, the next natural step was to write a book. I was approached by a book publisher due to my song writing. My first book was a devotional book called A Mystery of Majesty which went on to sell in excess of 12,000 copies and win an Angel Award. Now, one of my life verses is Psalm 45:1 which says “My tongue is the pen of a ready writer…” My belief is that if I am ready to write, God is ready to pour out material to write about!

That is so true. That verse is one of my life verses, too, but mine is mostly Christian fiction, not music. Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
I love biographies and autobiographies like The Hiding Place by Corrie Tenboom. I am drawn to allegory. Some of my favorite books are Hinds Feet On High Places and Mountains of Spices by Hannah Hurnard. I have read The Chronicles of Narnia to my children through the years. In addition, I read to my children the entire Little House series by Laura Wilder.

Hinds Feet On High Places is my favorite classic allegory. How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
Since I have a singing/speaking career, we travel many weekends during the year. My wife and I live in the country on the farm where I raised my children. When my mind is overwhelmed with writing or I just need a break from work, I walk outside my barn (where my studio is) and go fishing at one of my ponds. Sometimes, I go walk in the woods to clear my mind and refresh my soul. I spend time worshiping the Lord in song. I LOVE being with my grandchildren so I spend as much time with them as I can. Keeps my soul focused on the important things rather than the urgent things.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
I base each character’s name on the meaning. In fact, before I write the name I think of the meaning then find a name that contains that meaning. Often, I will derive a name from the Latin word with the desired meaning…especially when writing in the fantasy genre.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Several things come to mind. My wife and I have been married for over 32 years. We have raised 9 children together. We are about to be grandparents for the 8th time. Even though I have songs that are sung literally all over the world via the church, my greatest accomplishment is my family. Everything I write is to leave a legacy for them…for generations to come.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
I’ve never been asked that before! The first thing that comes to mind is an eagle. I often imagine myself with the ability to fly!

What is your favorite food?
Popcorn, hands down! Just ask my children!

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
Being told I had no potential as a song writer was a major blow to my very identity. The way I overcame it was through my faith. I came to a point of being so convinced of who God made me to be that it affected every aspect of my life. My worldview changed overnight and I became convinced God would give me a song a day if I would listen…if I was ready! That attitude carried through to authoring books. I’ve released several devotional books designed to lead people to understand their identity in Christ. My autobiography was released a couple of years ago and continues to do well. In addition, I have authored several children’s books and am currently finishing up a fourth fantasy novel featuring my grandchildren as the main characters. Writing is simply fun and empowering and allows me to go anywhere and do anything my imagination affords me!

Tell us about the featured book.
The Chronicles of Bren, Captured, is my story told in allegory. The word Bren means “tears.” Even though I have gone through much pain in my own life, I have also enjoyed quite the adventurous journey in the process. This story begins the saga of Lee. Life is rough for this young man. Bullied and teased and constantly on the lookout for those who would antagonize him, he does not start the journey well. Yet, through a series of events, he finds himself falling into another realm. In this realm he has a new name and, rather than being bullied, finds he is a prince - the son of a king! Even in this realm, he finds himself in danger, taken captive by the resident evil lord of the realm. Though in his previous life he felt no hope for rescue, in the land of Bren he finds that his father - the high king - is laser-focused on finding his captured son. What ensues is a tale of many twists and turns, fantastical characters, and the discovery of magical gifts. I wrote the book to encourage young people (from 10 years of age to 110!) to pursue their destiny and to discover the reason and purpose of their existence…no matter how rough their reality may be.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Chapter One
LEE PICKS A FIGHT
Lee picked himself up from the ground, as the boys who had just delivered his latest humiliation—yet another pummeling—walked away mocking him. At least this time he would come away reasonably unscathed. Last time he had walked home with a black eye and a bloodied nose. The embarrassment and shame he had had to endure for almost two weeks of school had taught him to be quick to block the punches to his face. This time he would have the weekend to at least ice the swollen lip he now wore and bring it back to its normal size and shape before school began again on Monday.

Leon Jennings was about to turn thirteen, but for all he had already endured in life he felt much older. Born into a farming family and expected to work the farm, Lee (as his folks called him) found the work easy enough. Every morning at 6:00 a.m. his dad would call up the stairs, “Lee! It’s time to get up! The cows won’t milk themselves!” Dragging himself from his slumber, he’d somehow manage to dress himself in the dark so as to not wake his three little brothers who shared the attic bedroom with him. Traipsing out into the predawn morning, he would go out into the pasture and find the two old Guernsey cows and herd them to the barn. Once there, he would put some feed in the stall and guide the first cow in. Once he had gotten all the milk he needed, he turned her out to the holding pen where the cow’s calf was kept so the baby could have her turn. Then he would drive in the next cow and go through the process once again.

Lee’s dad was a good man. Hardworking and silent most of the time (and stern in his discipline), he kept Lee busy. “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop,” he always said. Lee loved his father and, being a sensitive boy, often hoped he would hear his dad say something to him besides just giving him his next chore list. He really looked up to his dad.

But Lee and his dad couldn’t have been more different than night and day.

The boy was quite adept at drawing and spent hours (when he could squeeze time in on weekends between chores and schoolwork) drawing images conjured by his dreams. When he wasn’t drawing you could find him playing the old upright piano that had belonged to his grandmother Jennings. Lee’s mom had recognized his musical abilities quite early on. It was she who had traded some of her handmade quilts to purchase back the old piano from the elderly neighbor lady who had bought it years before. On his twelfth birthday, she had surprised him with that old piano and he had spent hours losing himself in its vast array of magical tones, improvising and making up tunes that went hand in hand with the adventures he had envisioned for himself from the time he could remember. Although at first glance Lee seemed to be different than the other country boys he was raised with, at heart he was every bit as passionate and every bit as strong as they were . . . just in a different way, a way they could not seem to see.

When Lee had gone to school, he lapped up every art lesson and ached when he had to go on to spelling or math. By the time he was in fifth grade, the other boys began to take a somewhat less than well-intentioned interest in Lee’s artwork. The day the other boys discovered he played the piano was one of the worst days of the boy’s life. (Incidentally, it also didn’t help matters that he was skinny as a rail and had big ears). Innocently, Lee had assumed others would appreciate his talent and be as encouraging as his folks had been. But he was wrong.

One day during the morning recess break, Mr. Tillman, the music instructor, had heard that Lee could play the piano. Asking him to please meet him in the auditorium, the teacher asked the boy to play something for him. As Lee began to play one of the tunes he had made up, one of his classmates was at the door listening. Having heard Mr. Tillman ask Lee to meet him in the auditorium, the boy had assumed Lee was in some kind of trouble and wanted to check it out for himself, hoping to find yet another reason to tease Lee. This discovery would prove to be a goldmine for the boys.
