AIRBORNE - DiAnn Mills - One Free Book

Bio: DiAnn Mills is a bestselling author who believes her readers should expect an adventure. She is a storyteller and creates action-packed, suspense-filled novels to thrill readers. Her titles have appeared on the CBA and ECPA bestseller lists; won two Christy Awards; and been finalists for the RITA, Daphne Du Maurier, Inspirational Readers’ Choice, and Carol award contests.

DiAnn is a founding board member of the American Christian Fiction Writers, a member of Advanced Writers and Speakers Association, Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime, and International Thriller Writers. She is the director of the Blue Ridge Mountain Christian Writers Conference, Mountainside Retreats: Marketing, Speakers, Nonfiction and Novelist with social media specialist Edie Melson where she continues her passion for helping other writers be successful. She speaks to various groups and teaches writing workshops around the country.

Welcome back, DiAnn. Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

We are all driven by specific callings and goals. I call these passions. Obviously one of mine is communicating through the written word. I love to write books for fans of Romantic Suspense, Christian Fiction, FBI Crime Solving Novels, and Clean Romance. I’m challenged daily to ensure my writing combines unforgettable characters with unpredictable plots which result in action-packed, suspense-filled novels. I also believe in mentoring serious new writers.

When God called me into writing, He also called me to give back to serious writers. I receive so much satisfaction when a writing student is published or receives an award. Through the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference, Edie Melson and I, as directors, strive to provide writers with the best tools to grow their craft and their relationship with God.

I live in Houston, Texas, with my husband Dean. He and I work together to provide my readers and writers the best possible experience—and glorify God.

How did you become interested in writing?

I can’t remember when I wasn’t writing. Story to me is life. Everyone is living a story, and I want to be a part of recording that history.

Due to lack of confidence, I didn’t start writing seriously until my husband challenged me to write a book. That was 1996, and that book was published in 1998. I’ve never stopped. For the past nearly four years, my husband has helped me full time. We view our partnership as a ministry.

What compelled you to write a book on this subject?

An idea … What if a virus unleashed onboard an international flight?

The idea pestered me for nearly three years before I wrote the book. In fact, Airborne was scheduled for release before COVID hit our world.

The search to find experts who were willing to give me accurate information took another year. Along the way, God placed the right people in my path:

  1. A woman and new friend whose doctorate is in microbiology and immunology.
  2. A man who trains flight attendants for the airline that I envisioned in my story.
  3. A pilot who not only flies for my designated airline but is also a suspense and thriller writer.
  4. The amazing people and resources of the CDC.
  5. The wisdom and guidance of the FBI.

What is the main theme or point that you want readers to understand from reading your book? Are there any other themes present in the book?

God is in control.

Marriage

Forgiveness

Trust

Mental health issues

Are there some specific lessons you hope readers will learn and apply to their lives after reading your book?

My mission then and now is to show a story that weaves hope, reality, and the sacrificial work of first responders when a deadly virus spreads through innocent people.

My prayer is people will experience God’s presence during our current global crisis. Will you join me in that prayer?

What makes your book different than any other books similar to yours that are in circulation today?

It’s a suspense that incorporates a crime, a failing marriage, and how various personalities work.

How does the book intertwine with God’s call on your life and how you are currently serving Him?

God is our priority, first place. He called me into writing fiction and teaching others what I learn. Airborne addresses God is in control of every aspect of our lives, and He cares.

Do you have a favorite Scripture verse?

Jeremiah 20:9 NIV

But if I say, “I will not mention his word
or speak anymore in his name,”
his word is in my heart like a fire,
a fire shut up in my bones.
I am weary of holding it in;
    indeed, I cannot.

When you are not writing, what do you like to do? Do you have any hobbies?

Bake, cook, garden, read, and spend time with the grandkids. Also love to travel!

Tell us about the book.

Heather Lawrence’s long-awaited vacation to Salzburg wasn’t supposed to go like this. Mere hours into the transatlantic flight, the Houston FBI agent is awakened when passengers begin exhibiting horrific symptoms of an unknown infection. As the virus quickly spreads and dozens of passengers fall ill, Heather fears she’s witnessing an epidemic similar to ones her estranged husband studies for a living—but this airborne contagion may have been deliberately released.

While Heather remains quarantined with other survivors, she works with her FBI colleagues to identify the person behind this attack. The prime suspect? Dr. Chad Lawrence, an expert in his field . . . and Heather’s husband. The Lawrences’ marriage has been on the rocks since Chad announced his career took precedence over his wife and future family and moved out.

As more victims fall prey days after the initial outbreak, time’s running out to hunt down the killer, one who may be closer to the victims than anyone ever expected.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Houston, Early July Monday 6P

Vacations offered a distraction for those who longed to relax and rejuvenate, but FBI Special Agent Heather Lawrence wrestled with the decision to take an overseas trip alone. Normally she arrived for a flight at IAH eager to embark upon a new adventure. Not this time. Her vacation expectations had bottomed out over four weeks ago after Chad had slammed the door on reconciliation. Was she working through her grief or avoiding the reality of a husband who no longer wanted her? She waited to board the flight in a designated line at the gate. The hum of voices blended with airport beeps, and announcements swirled around her as though enticing her to join the enthusiasm. In the line beside her, passengers shifted their carry-ons and positioned their mobile devices or paper boarding passes. Ready. Alert. People eager to be on their way. Heather offered a smile to those nearest her. An adorable little blond boy with an older woman found it hard to stand still. A middle-aged couple held hands. The bald head and pasty skin of the man indicated a medical condition. He stumbled, and the woman reached for him. A robust man held a violin case next to his heart. A twentysomething woman with pink hair and a man behind her with a scruffy beard exchanged a kiss. Chad used to steal kisses. If she pinpointed the exact moment when he chose to separate himself from her, she’d say when he returned from a third trip for Doctors Without Borders late last fall. He’d witnessed suffering and cruel deaths that had scarred him. She’d encouraged his desire to help others, not realizing their future would take a backseat. While he drove toward success, their marriage drifted across the lanes and stalled in a rut.

DEADLY ENCOUNTER - DiAnn Mills - One Free Book

Dear Readers, DiAnn and I have been friends for a long time. She’s one of the authors whose books go to the top of my to-be-read list. Her suspense novels are true-to-life, news-worthy stories set mostly in Texas. The settings are totally authentic, and her characters are normal and flawed people who rise to extraordinary heights when needed.

Bio: DiAnn Mills is a bestselling author who believes her readers should expect an adventure. She combines unforgettable characters with unpredictable plots to create action-packed, suspense-filled novels.

Her titles have appeared on the CBA and ECPA bestseller lists; won two Christy Awards; and been finalists for the RITA, Daphne Du Maurier, Inspirational Readers’ Choice, and Carol award contests. Library Journal presented her with a Best Books 2014: Genre Fiction award in the Christian Fiction category for Firewall.

DiAnn is a founding board member of the American Christian Fiction Writers, a member of Advanced Writers and Speakers Association, Sisters in Crime, and International Thriller Writers. She is co-director of The Blue Ridge Mountain Christian Writers Conference and The Author Roadmap with social media specialist Edie Melson where she continues her passion of helping other writers be successful. She speaks to various groups and teaches writing workshops around the country.

DiAnn has been termed a coffee snob and roasts her own coffee beans. She’s an avid reader, loves to cook, and believes her grandchildren are the smartest kids in the universe. She and her husband live in sunny Houston, Texas.

DiAnn is very active online and would love to connect with readers on any of the social media platforms listed at www.diannmills.com.

Welcome back, DiAnn. Let’s do some fun questions first. What song most closely resembles your life?
“I Could Sing of Your Love Forever”

Do you have a favorite Bible verse? And why is it a favorite?
Jeremiah 20:9 ESV But if I say, “I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name,” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.

This verse speaks to my love of Jesus and to my writing ministry.

What is the one thing you wish you could go back and change in your life?
That’s a tough question! I wish I’d lived my faith stronger as a teen and young adult. And if I have a second one, I wish I’d started writing sooner.

What is the most important characteristic for a good friend to have?
Trustworthy. If we can’t trust our friends, then they aren’t really our friends.

What extracurricular activities did you participate in when you were in school?
Band, Choir, Basketball, Latin Club

What is your favorite movie of all times?
Lord of the Rings - all three.

Tell us about why you wrote this book.
1. To show how the FBI works with other agencies to solve crime and protect people.
2. To show the reader a suspenseful story that is set in my city Houston with it’s unique characteristics.
 3. To show the reader the workings of Houston’s Airport Rangers. This volunteer group patrols the perimeter’s of IAH on horseback and reports unusual activities to the police.
4. To show the reader characters who are strong, determined, flawed, and real.
5. To show the reader the power of love and forgiveness.

Please give us the first page of the book.
SATURDAY MORNINGS were Stacy Broussard’s escape, especially when life slapped her with stress. No better way to unwind from the week than to ride her quarter horse on Houston’s airport trail and enjoy nature. This morning promised to be the perfect distraction from a truckload of problems, from the anniversary of the death of her sister to seeking custody of a twelve-year-old boy. She looked forward to a lift in her spirit.

She pulled her truck into the Aldine Westfield Stables. As usual she was the first one of the airport rangers to arrive. Chet’s pickup wasn’t parked beneath the moss-draped oak, and he normally arrived before dawn. Strange since he took his responsibilities as stable manager seriously.

Finishing her latte, she grabbed her wallet and keys and stepped outside her truck to admire an incredible purple-and-gold sunrise. Not even an early morning aircraft landing disturbed her.

She walked slowly to the stables, taking in the singing robins and the familiar humidity. The smell of horseflesh and straw tickled her nose.

“Good morning, boys and girls,” she said. “Your friendly veterinarian is on the scene.”

If anyone heard her, they’d declare her insane. Maybe so when she reflected on how much she preferred an animal’s company to a human’s. Except Whitt . . . the most fascinating twelve-
year-old on the planet.

Stacy ambled past each stall until she reached Ginger’s, greeting the horses by name, touching velvety soft noses, and visibly checking to ensure they were okay. Her pets looked healthy. Spending a few extra moments with Ginger eased the knots in her shoulders that no massage could ever eliminate.

She led Ginger into the stable area and grabbed a pitchfork to tidy up her stall. A strong horse smell and a little manure on her boots never hurt anyone. Being prissy was not one of her traits. When finished, she retrieved her mare’s blanket and bridle from her tack box. Her cell phone alerted her to a text.

DEADLOCK - DiAnn Mills - One Free Book

Bio: DiAnn Mills is a bestselling author who believes her readers should expect an adventure. She combines unforgettable characters with unpredictable plots to create action-packed, suspense-filled novels.

Her titles have appeared on the CBA and ECPA bestseller lists; won two Christy Awards; and been finalists for the RITA, Daphne Du Maurier, Inspirational Readers’ Choice, and Carol award contests. Library Journal presented her with a Best Books 2014: Genre Fiction award in the Christian Fiction category for Firewall.

DiAnn is a founding board member of the American Christian Fiction Writers; the 2015 president of the Romance Writers of America’s Faith, Hope, and Love chapter; a member of Advanced Writers and Speakers Association, and International Thriller Writers. She speaks to various groups and teaches writing workshops around the country. She and her husband live in sunny Houston, Texas.

DiAnn is very active online and would love to connect with readers on any of the social media platforms listed at www.diannmills.com .

Dear Readers, I’ve known DiAnn since the beginning of American Christian Romance Writers which later became American Christian Fiction writers. I’ve always loved reading her books. Deadlock is another in a long line of wonderful romantic suspense novels that I’ve loved.

Welcome, DiAnn. Tell us a little about yourself and your background.
I believe in Christian fiction to show readers a Christian worldview through a non-threatening environment. As a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and writer, my days are filled creating story and serving God. My husband and I live in Houston, Texas.
How did you become interested in writing?
I can’t remember when I didn’t think about writing. Before I could hold a pencil, I created story. After I could hold a pencil, I wrote story. The power of the written word intrigued me as much then as now—the sound of words, the look of them on the written page, the way words are used to move, entertain, and inspire the reader.

What compelled you to write a book on this subject?
The romantic suspense novel Deadlock tackles how high-profile FBI agents work through a murder case while dealing with the uncomfortable issues of family dynamics.                                                                                                                                                  What is the main theme or point that you want readers to understand from reading your book? Are there any other themes present in the book?
We live in a dangerous and unpredictable world. God gifts those in law enforcement to stop and prevent crime. He is sovereign.

Other themes are forgiveness and trust.
Are there some specific lessons you hope readers will learn and apply to their lives after reading your book?
God is bigger than our problems - whether that be career, spiritual, or personal. In Deadlock, not only did professional problems attack my hero and heroine, but family issues.

What makes your book different than any other books similar to yours that are in circulation today?
My heroine steps into the violent crime division of the FBI and meets her new partner, the same man who’d sent her brother to jail. While the two agents work to build a trusting relationship, the two are opposite personalities: she operates by the book, and he is a free thinker. The two together will either be unstoppable or destroy each other. And they might find love in the process.

How does the book intertwine with God’s call on your life and how you are currently serving Him?
I write about my heavenly Father in obedience to His call on my life. Fiction is how Jesus taught life principles, and I believe in its power to bring truth to readers. Another passion is teaching writers the craft, watching them grow, and fulfilling their dreams.                                                                                                                                                                    Do you have a favorite Scripture verse?
Jeremiah 29:9
If I say, “I will not mention him,
or speak any more in his name,”
there is in my heart as it were a burning fire
    shut up in my bones,
and I am weary with holding it in,
    and I cannot.

A very powerful scripture for writers or any Christian. When you are not writing, what do you like to do? Do you have any hobbies?
When I’m not writing I’m busy with grandchildren, reading, cooking, and lately learning how to roast my own coffee beans.
Grandchildren, and even great grandchildren, are the spice of life as we grow older. As we close, is there anything else you would like to add?
I love to hear from readers! Contact me via my website www.diannmills.com. For those who enjoy a weekly blog, I encourage readers to sign up for my newsletter/blog on my website.

May you be blessed and know God’s redeeming love. He has a plan for your life. Let Him show you how to find peace.

Tell us about the book.
Deadlock
Two murders have rocked the city of Houston. Are they the work of a serial killer, or is a copycat trying to get away with murder?

That is the question facing Special Agent Bethany Sanchez, who is eager for her new assignment in violent crimes but anxious about meeting her new partner. Special Agent Thatcher Graves once arrested her brother, and he has a reputation for being a maverick. Plus, their investigative styles couldn’t be more opposite: he operates on instinct, while she goes by the book.

When hot leads soon fizzle out, their differences threaten to leave them deadlocked. But an attempt on their lives turns up the heat and brings them closer together, and a third victim might yield the clue that will help them zero in on a killer. This could be the case of their careers . . . if they can survive long enough to solve it.

DOUBLE CROSS - DiAnn Mills - One Free Book

Welcome back, DiAnn. Lets do some fun questions first. What song most closely resembles your life?
Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) by Hillsong
The words touch me as though the song were written for and about me.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse? And why is it a favorite?
Jeremiah 20:9. I like the NIV version the best: But if I say, I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name, his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.

The words of Jeremiah inspire me to live and breathe every aspect of God living in me.

What is the one thing you wish you could go back and change in your life?
To understand the value of my relationship to God. Hold fast and never let go. Like all of             us, I made mistakes because I took my focus off Him.

What is the most important characteristic for a good friend to have?
Integrity. I didnt even have to think about this question!

What extracurricular activities did you participate in when you were in school?
Can I remember that far back? :)
1. Latin club (I know boring but I loved it.)
2. Choir
3. Band - I was a majorette.

I could see you as a majorette. What is your favorite movie of all times?
Gone with the Wind - The characterization moves me each time I view it. All the characters were uniquely motivated.

Ive read the book several times over the year, and I own the DVD of the movie. Its been a favorite of mine, too. Tell us about why you wrote this book.
I wanted to show how strong characters reacted to a scam against the elderly who suffered from Alzheimer's. My heroine is an FBI agent, and my hero is a police officer. Both were motivated to end the scam and bring the ones responsible to justice.

As a side note: those who deal with the struggles of Alzheimers, the caregiver and the victim, are caught up in a downward spiral. I wanted their voices heard.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Prologue
Special Agent Laurel Evertson had done everything required of her and more to gain Morton Wilmingtons affections. The gaudy diamond on her left hand proved it. She was prepared to end her undercover work tonight and walk away from this despicable role. All she had to do was find the flash drive that would send her fiancé to prison for life.

Morton reached into his closet and pulled out designer pants, shirt, and a sports jacket. Babe, Im taking a shower. Thought wed grab dinner downtown before the play.

Perfect. Im ready. So looking forward to tonight. She despised the lies and the counterfeit love.

What are you going to do, read here?

I am. A new romance novel. She pointed to a window seat that offered a scenic view of his condos pool, bathed in late summer afternoon sun.

He chuckled, his deep-blue eyes smoldering. As long as Im your main man.

None other. She kissed him lightly. Im turning on a little Andrea Bocelli to put me in the mood.

For what?

The book, the play, dinner, and us.

Another reason why I love you. Even if you did beat me last night in Monopoly. He disappeared into the shower.

The moment the sound of water met her ears, she confirmed his location. Four times shed found herself alone in his condo and attempted to access his safe, but each time shed failed to hack into his computer, where he stored the safe combination that changed daily. Today she knew his password, and she quickly located the code on his laptop.

She placed the novel on the bed and removed a framed picture of a tank at Fort Knox from the wall to reveal the safe. Odd for a bedroom, but Morton had served four years in the Army.
Probably the only thing he could be proud of. She rested the picture against the nightstand while the digital combination bannered across her mind. Gripping her right fingers into her palm to steady herself, she pressed in the code, hoping Andrea Bocellis tenor voice drowned out the low click. If she was wrong, the alarm would blare throughout the condo, bringing Morton out of the shower along with his bodyguard from the kitchen.

Big business had made him one of the most powerful men in the country and certainly in Texas. Murder, money laundering, and organized crime were his best friendslegitimacy his enemy. But hed made one mistake, exposing it all on a flash drive. Hed bragged where it was hidden one night after drinking too much. It had taken her months to locate the safe and figure out how to gain access.

Was she any better than he, using another person for her own agenda? She shook off the thought with her commitment to stop Wilmington from breaking the law.

She secured the flash drive and replaced the picture. Stealing her way to the bathroom door, she confirmed Morton was still showering. His laptop sat on his desk as though beckoning her to prove the FBIs suspicions. She inserted the drive. Her heart pounded, ached.

Babe, had an idea for our honeymoon, he called from the bathroom.

Great. She breathed deeply to calm her scattered nerves. Are you going to tell me?

Maybe.

You know I love surprises. The details on the computer rose like rich cream . . . names, places, bank accounts. She ejected the device and slipped it into her shoe.

I sent a check to MD Anderson this morning, he said.

For the kids or in general?

The kids. The fund-raiser we attended hit me hard.

But youd killed men who got in your way. They stole my heart too. She texted the FBI and Jesse, her partner, providing the code to the condos alarm system and telling them where the armed bodyguard was located. Do you need anything?

Thats a loaded offer but Im good.
He wouldnt be so good once the FBI arrived for the takedown. What time are we leaving? She moved back to the window seat and opened her novel.

He stepped from the bathroom, a towel wrapped around his waist. Is six okay?

She smiled. Sure. Finally this charade would be over.

While discussing what Wilmington wanted to do for the children at MD Anderson, he dressed and she touched up her makeup. Her hands trembled.

Are you okay? he said. Youre shaking.

Just hungry. She hated this game, made her feel as dirty as Morton.

Want a glass of orange juice?

Youre so sweet. Thanks, Id love it.

He left the room and went down the hall to the kitchen. She checked her phone.

W r n place. Now

With a confident breath, she pulled her Glock from her purse and trailed after Wilmington.

THE SURVIVOR - DiAnn Mills - One Free Book

Welcome back, DiAnn. Tell us a little about yourself and your background.
I’m a wife, mother, and grandmother (Mimi). I’ve lived in Houston for 33 years and love everything about my city and state. I’ve been writing and published since 1996. Love what I do! I also love teaching and mentoring serious writers.

How did you become interested in writing?
I was always interested in writing, but I didn’t have the confidence. It took my husband challenging me to write a book for me to get started. He suggested I quit my job to see if I could get anything published. That was the incentive for me to fulfill my dreams.

What compelled you to write a book on this subject?
I’ve made great friends at FBI Houston. They are supportive, and I consider myself very fortunate. One of the special agents suggested I write from solved cold cases. We searched through their files until I found the case for The Chase and The Survivor. In The Survivor, I was captivated by the courage of a young woman who had overcome a tragedy. I knew she had to be in my story! Although I massaged the real case, much of the character’s backstory is authentic. The real woman’s courage inspired me to show her bravery throughout the book.

What is the main theme or point that you want readers to understand from reading your book? Are there any other themes present in the book?
With God, any adversity can be overcome.

I also deal with forgiveness: ourselves and others.

Are there some specific lessons you hope readers will learn and apply to their lives after reading your book?
I want my readers to close the book and be encouraged and inspired to attempt what appears beyond their reach. I believe in prayer mixed with goals, God goals, and I want my readers to feel the same exhilaration in their spirits.

What makes your book different from any other books similar to yours that are in circulation today?
The characters! The Survivor is like “Castle” meets “Cold Case.” I have a gutsy heroine who is a suspense writer, and an FBI special agent, who is an Indiana Jones type of hero. The two find themselves in the midst of danger with impossible odds. Both are strong and stubborn people. It’s a good thing they love each other!

How does the book intertwine with God’s call on your life and how you are currently serving Him?
I want to write books that mirror real life. We live in an imperfect world, and I want to show how people are touched by those who solve their problems and make decisions from a Christian worldview. Our purpose is to reach out to people, and I find this best through the written word.

Do you have a favorite Scripture verse?
Jeremiah 20:9 If I say, “I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,” there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot. …”

When you are not writing, what do you like to do? Do you have any hobbies?
I love to read, cook, garden, and play with the grandbabies. Reading is a passion, not only my own genre, but nonfiction, and how-to books about the craft. Cooking and gardening help me work through plot points and characterization. Grandbabies are just fun.

As we close, is there anything else you would like to add?
I invite readers to join me on Facebook. We have a fabulous time discussing everything and enjoying the community there. I love to hear from readers!

Tell us about the book.
Kariss meets Dr. Amy Garrett, who survived a brutal childhood attack in which the assailant was never found. Now Dr. Garrett wants her story written in a novel. Kariss wishes she could seek the advice of Special Agent Tigo Harris, but she broke off the relationship a few months prior and seeing him again would be too painful. She interviews Amy and conducts her own research, stepping unaware into a viper's pit of danger. Tigo misses Kariss and wants her back, but he understands why she broke off their relationship. Pride plays a big role in his reluctance to make things right between them. Instead, he concentrates on solving a car bombing and bringing the killer to justice. As Kariss's new story attracts an onslaught of danger that she never expected, can Tigo save the woman he loves and find who wants her dead for writing about an unsolved cold-case?

THE CHASE - DiAnn Mills - Free Book

Welcome back, DiAnn. Let’s do some fun questions first. What song most closely resembles your life?
“Great is Thy Faithfulness”

Do you have a favorite Bible verse? And why is it a favorite?
Jeremiah 20:9 ESV: If I say, “I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,” there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in and I cannot.

This verse is the story of my life in Christ.

What is the one thing you wish you could go back and change in your life?
That I’d have taken writing classes from the masters before making mistakes and having to edit them! Seriously, more wisdom before making choices.

What is the most important characteristic for a good friend to have?
Trust. Without that essential ingredient, two people cannot be friends. And second, although you didn’t ask :) is respect.

What extracurricular activities did you participate in when you were in school?
Choir, band, Latin club. I was very shy then, so it was hard to get involved. :) I did attempt girl’s basketball once ... nice a good move with my height.

What is your favorite movie of all times?
Now that’s tough. Used to be Gone with the Wind, but now I’d say the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The characterization, plot line, setting, and the symbolism is so rich that I haven’t         seen anything since that compares.

Tell us about why you wrote this book.
I heard about the cold case, Beloved Doe, from a friend, who is the media coordinator for Houston’s FBI. The case was cold for five years, 2003 - 2008. A child was found in a dumpster, died of starvation. The FBI, Houston Police Department, Texas Rangers, and Crime Stoppers couldn’t let the case go, and they worked together to eventually solve it. The case wouldn’t let me go either ... a helpless child with no identity. Like the heroine in The Chase, I had to write the story.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Present day
June
Kariss had fulfilled all her dreams but one by age thirty-five. Most women would bask in such a claim, but not Kariss. The one mountain yet to climb beckoned her to strap on hiking boots and make her approach. The peak held her in fascination, and failing meant losing everything she’d ever gained.

Her heels clicked along the marble flooring of the Marriott hotel’s lobby adjoining Houston’s Intercontinental Airport. Ten minutes early for her appointment with her literary agent and she could use the time to make sure her responses to Meredith were gracious and resolute. A mouthful for sure.

Sinking into a plush chair, she took a deep breath and waited. With all of her prolific abilities, why couldn’t she respond with words that relayed her passion for this story? But now she had the opportunity to convince Meredith of her sincerity. A little encouragement went a long way when calling up the powers of inspiration and creativity.

Right on time, Meredith Rockford slipped into a chair across from Kariss, sipping on a cup of tea, no doubt Earl Gray. Dressed in a black traveler’s knit jacket and pants, the only color emitting from Meredith was her crimson lipstick.

“You could have texted me that you were early,” Meredith said.

Kariss smiled. “Just got here. Did you have a good night’s rest?”

Meredith lifted a brow while taking a sip of her tea. “My head is killing me. I had to fly from New York to Houston. Arrived late and had to cancel our dinner appointment, and you ask me if I slept well?” She set the cup on a table in front of them. “The only thing that will give me a good night’s sleep is for you to abandon this ludicrous idea of changing genres.”
