LAWFULLY GUARDED - Elle E Kay - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, Elle. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
There are several more books I hope to write including another book for the Blushing Brides Series, but once Lawfully Vindicated releases, God willing, my release schedule will slow down until winter.

Tell us a little about your family.
My husband, Joe, is a carpenter. He is a blessing from God. Our son is in the Army and stationed in San Antonio. His family is down there with him, so we don’t get to see much of our grandchildren and have to make-do with Facetime for watching them grow.

I’m also blessed to be from a large family and extended family. I recently returned from a girls weekend with my sisters, an aunt (my age), and my mom. It was a blast, and I even made time to take a walk on the beach and have some alone time with God.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
Yes. I don’t have the time to spend reading that I once did, so I gravitate toward shorter books. I also notice mistakes that I never would’ve picked up on before I started writing. Being unable to turn off my inner editor takes some of the enjoyment out of reading.

I frequently read trade books now, so that takes up time that used to be devoted to pleasure reading, but I still love reading, even though it’ll never be the same as it once was.

I understand that. If a story takes me out of inner-edit mode, I know it’s a very good book. What are you working on right now?
Lawfully Vindicated. It’s a historical western romance partially based on a true story of a US Marshal who is arrested after shooting a former justice while on duty. The research for this one is quite interesting.

What outside interests do you have?
Mostly our goat farm. I enjoy the time I spend with our livestock, and our livestock guardian dog, Sadie. Bird watching is a pleasure, also.

For a long time, I enjoyed being in the church choir. I learned how to play piano and really enjoy it (though I still consider myself a beginner).

How do you choose your settings for each book?
It depends. Mostly, I like writing about the area where I live, since I know it best, but in the case of my current WIP, it’s a historical and the events I’m fictionalizing took place in 1889 California, so I set my novella there.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
Most of the time someone asks this question, they exclude Jesus. I’m glad you didn’t. I would choose Him. I’d like to sit at the Master’s feet like Mary did, and soak up everything He has to teach me.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
Point-of-view. I wish I had understood it better. My debut novel had too many point-of-view characters, and although it added a unique element to the story, I wonder if it might’ve been better served by limiting them.

I think POV is hard for every author early in their career. I know it wasn’t until about the third book that I totally understood. What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
That sometimes we think a matter is concluded, but if we haven’t talked it over with Him, it’s not finished. I listened to a David Peacock sermon on Sermon Audio tonight after hearing a sermon from our local preacher on the same subject on Sunday morning. Whenever that happens, I know there is something in it that God wants to make sure I understand clearly.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
Learn the craft.
Stay humble.
Help others.

Tell us about the featured book.
Lawfully Guarded was my first Billionaire romance. It’s a novella and I’ll give you a hint: the guy isn’t the billionaire. It was fun to write Delaney as she starts off a selfish spoiled brat, but opportunities abound for her to grow and learn about real life, love, relationships, and most importantly, God.

I could tell from the cover that he wasn’t the hero. Please give us the first page of the book.
When Alexander Whitaker’s office door opened, Trenton Prescott turned his back on the spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean to face the woman entering the room. Her thick brown hair spilled down her back in waves, skimming her waistline. The picture he’d been sent of her didn’t do her justice.

Interest sparked in her dark eyes as she looked him up and down. The mini dress she wore showed off her shapely legs, and he fought to keep his gaze on her face.

Delaney Whitaker lowered herself into the chair facing her father’s mahogany desk. “What was it you wanted, Daddy?”

“I’d like you to meet Trenton Prescott of Garrison Security.”

She turned and appraised him once more before offering her hand, which he shook. “Charmed, I’m sure.”

Mr. Whitaker scowled at her. “Trent will be your bodyguard until such time when Courtney is safely returned home and I determine that the danger is past.”

The woman sneered. “I will not be followed around like a child with a nanny.”

“You will do exactly what you’re told if you’d like to stay in my good graces, my dear.” He leaned back in his chair, turning his stare from Delaney back to Trent. “Thank you for getting here so quickly. I appreciate everything Garrison Security is doing to help us during this difficult time.”

“Glad to be of service, sir.” Trent stood. “If we’re about done here, I’d like to get going.”

“I think we’ve covered everything,” Mr. Whitaker stood and gave Trent a firm handshake.
The young woman rose to her feet, and the older man kissed the top of his daughters head, saluted Trent, and left him to face his surly client.

“Well, come on then.” Delaney held the door open. “I’ll get the staff to ready a room for you.”

“We’re not staying here.” He brushed past her, and the sweet smell of jasmine tickled his nose.

“I’m not leaving home.”

He turned to face her. “You don’t have a say in the matter, princess. Your father and I worked out the details.” He grinned. “You’re not safe. Not even in your daddy’s Bel Air mansion.”

“We have excellent security.”

“Yes. So excellent someone managed to get around security, turn off all the cameras, and kidnap your sister.”

“My sister is a nitwit.”

“Even so, you’re coming with me.”

SHADOWING STELLA - Elle E Kay - One Free Book

Welcome back, Elle. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I love reading romantic suspense, so it’s the genre that comes most naturally to me. I write romance, too, but romantic suspense/thriller is where I feel the most at home.

I love reading romantic suspense novels. Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
The day my son was born.

How has being published changed your life?
It’s given me a sense of accomplishment, and the work itself now takes up many hours of my life, but most things have stayed the same.

What are you reading right now?
I’m reading the Cape Refuge Collection by Terri Blackstock. I haven’t read enough to have an opinion yet, but I usually enjoy her books.

What is your current work in progress?
I’m finalizing the third and final book in the Endless Mountain Series due out later this month, Chasing Sofie.

I’m looking forward to featuring it on my blog, too. What would be your dream vacation?
I’d love to go back to Hawaii, but my husband wants to go to Alaska first, so Alaska it is. I’m sure I’d love it, too, but I’m not fond of the cold. I’d also love to go to Scotland. My ancestry is Scottish, and I’ve always longed to go there, but it’s chilly there, too, from what I understand.

I’ve had a couple of contemporary books with Scottish heroes. How do you choose your settings for each book?
Some of them are set in the area where I live, Pennsylvania’s Endless Mountain Region. Others are set out west because they’re Western historicals, so they would only make sense set there. Several of them take place in Cimarron in the New Mexico Territory, because I used to live in the Jemez Mountains, so I’m somewhat familiar with the terrain of the area, and it works well with the stories since it’s near the Santa Fe Trail.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
That’s a tough one. I’m not much for celebrities or politicians, so I guess it would be my son, Ian. He’s stationed in San Antonio, so I haven’t seen him in a long time. I’d love a day to spend with the grandkids, too. We are hoping to plan a vacation to San Antonio, so we can see them all soon.

A lot of authors choose someone who isn’t a celebrity for that question. What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
Bird watching and playing with our farm animals. The goats provide endless hours of entertainment.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
Starting. That’s it really. If I can write those first few words in each writing session, then the words will flow, but getting to the point where I open the document and start writing can be challenging. I tend to procrastinate.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Read craft books. You may think you know everything there is to know about writing from reading, but you don’t. There are things you don’t notice until you start writing yourself. Learn the craft. It will pay great dividends.

Tell us about the featured book.
Shadowing Stella is the first book in the Endless Mountain series. It was also my debut novel. It’s different from the other books I’ve written in that it offers additional points-of-view. Much of the book is personal to me, so it was a labor of love. The book touches on serious issues, but does so in a tasteful way that provides hope and encourages faith.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Stella rubbed her eyes. Her heart beat hard against her ribcage. She jumped up in the bed she’d been lying in. Holding the sheet in place with one hand she took in her surroundings. A high end hotel room it seemed. A painful stabbing sensation let her know all was not well. What am I doing here? Stella listened intently to make sure she was alone. When she rose, she looked out the window and noticed she was on an upper floor with a private balcony overlooking the ocean. The waves crashed violently against the sandy shoreline. As her senses awakened, she realized that her last memory was from the club the night before. She glanced around the room wildly. Finding her clothes stacked neatly on the chair, she dressed as quickly as she could with shaking fingers. It took several tries to get the button on her skirt fastened. What happened to me? Where are Cindy and Joan? I need to get out of here. Stella opened the door to the hallway and peeked out to make sure nobody was around. I’ve got to get home. She hurried to a nearby elevator. When she reached the lobby, she looked over at the front desk clerk; a middle-aged woman with long gray hair. For a moment, she considered talking to the woman, but decided against it.
Instead, she exited the hotel through the front doors, looking back at the older woman with the kind blue eyes one last time.

THE BILLIONAIRE'S RELUCTANT BRIDE - Elle E Kay - one Free Book

Welcome, Elle. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
Many of my characters have some of my personality traits, but only one was based mostly on me and that was Stella in Shadowing Stella.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
I moved to the mountains and started a hobby farm. We filled it with goats, sheep, rabbits, chickens, turkeys, and ducks. Now I’m the crazy goat lady who drinks from a coffee mug that says “I’m two goats past normal.” With fifteen goats, I may be more than a few goats past normal at this point.

I love goat cheese. I haven’t tried goat milk, but my daughters had to use it when they were children, and we had to find a goat farm. Luckily, there was one close to where we lived. When did you first discover that you were a writer?
In first grade. My teacher suggested that I was a budding writer and for years after I left her classroom, she reminded me to keep writing. Good teachers are invaluable.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
I read a wide array of books, the King James Bible is my first priority, and I read that each night at bedtime. I also read non-fiction biblical commentaries and writing trade books as well. My favorite pleasure reading books are romantic suspense and thrillers, but I also enjoy romance and an occasional cozy mystery. I used to read fantasy, but I haven’t picked one up in years.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
I don’t. Just kidding. It isn’t easy to stay sane, but, somehow, I manage. Recently, I started keeping a to-do list on the computer in simple project management software (todoist.com). It helps me organize all my tasks in a way that makes sense so I don’t get overwhelmed or side-tracked.

I’m going to try that one. How do you choose your characters’ names?
It depends on the book. Most of the time the main character names come to me without much thought. Currently, I’m writing a book where some of the characters are from Columbia, so I searched popular names in Columbia in the year they would’ve been born. I do the same sort of research for historical fiction. When writing contemporary books, I simply pick names I like or that I find interesting.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Raising my son, Ian. He’s twenty-five, and is currently active duty in the US Army stationed in Texas.

The writing accomplishment I was most proud of was releasing my first book, but since then my writing (and marketing) has improved, so each book I write enjoys greater success than the previous one. I hope that trend continues.

Yea!! I live in Texas. If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
A goat. I could still live here on our goat farm. Goats are so adorable and they love to play. This time of year, when the nights grow cool they run around and jump on the dog house and rabbit house. They have a great deal of fun.

What is your favorite food?
Ice cream. Mint chocolate chip.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
My greatest roadblock was taking too much time in between novels. I overcame it by scheduling preorders to keep me on a strict writing schedule. Without deadlines, I’m useless, but as long as I know I have to finish a book by a certain date, it gets done.

Tell us about the featured book.
My featured book is The Billionaire’s Reluctant Bride. I was asked to write for the Blushing Brides series, and thought it might be fun to write a true billionaire story, so I wrote Zach and Addison’s story. The two were childhood friends who made a marriage pact as teenagers and decide to follow through with it. So far, it’s been my most successful book and one I truly enjoyed writing.

Please give us the first page of the book.
10 August 2018
Addison laughed as she typed her response to Zach’s email.

Sure. Why not? Set the date. Order the flowers. I’ll be there.

He always had a great sense of humor. It surprised her he remembered the teenage pact they’d made to bring it up all these years later. Picturing her friend’s laughing blue eyes teasing her, she grinned. It would be fun to have him back in her life again, but now that Fractal Enterprises had gone public, and he was a successful giant on the social media scene, it was unlikely he’d be able to make time to hang out with an old friend.

His response came quickly.

Why don’t we set the date for our birthday? It would be fitting, don’t you agree? I’ll pick you up first thing in the morning. August 23rd to fly you to location.

If he wanted to keep the joke going, she would play along.

Our birthday. Why didn’t I think of that? I’ll see you then.

I’m going to love this book. I can tell. How can readers find you on the Internet?
Readers can find me on my website and on social media.
