THE LIEUTENANT'S SECRET LOVE - Elva Cobb Martin - One Free Book

Welcome back to my blog, Elva. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon? I see more writing of historical romance and more prayer about it. I believe it’s a great day for Christian, hope-building, fiction. People are looking for some relief and God’s help for our tense days. I believe they are especially happy to find both in the pages of well-written Christian fiction.

Tell us a little about your family. I’m married to Dwayne, my high school sweetheart. We have a grown son and one grandson who is 15. I am the third daughter of five children, so I love big families, too. We raised our son in the country to give him those special experiences with cows, horses, and planting things that I enjoyed when growing up on a farm. Now my husband and I live closer in town in a subdivision. Animals and growing things? We are “down to” two tomato plants in a bucket and a small rose garden to tend and enjoy. And we get to love on my sister’s baby goats she raises on her nearby farm.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how? I usually advise aspiring writers to read in their genres, and I still do myself. But at times, to rest my brain, I like to read something different, like mysteries and biographies.

What are you working on right now? I am working on Book 6 in our Charleston Brides historical romance Series. The working title is, The Gamekeeper’s Reluctant Bride. I think it will be my most interesting story so far!

What outside interests do you have? My husband and I are active in a local congregation, in an exercise program at our local gym, and I coordinate an internet prayer task force to pray for our leaders and crisis developments. I also enjoy baking, gardening, and hiking.

How do you choose your settings for each book? They usually come to me with the first idea for a book—and all my books so far start out in my favorite historic city, Charleston, South Carolina. Southern plantations, sailing ships, horses, children, and dogs are always a part, as well as gardens, tea time, adventure, and of course, lots of romantic encounters between my hero and heroine!

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why? Of course, we could quickly say Jesus Christ, but I invite His presence daily, and He never leaves me. So, I’d say our early president, Thomas Jefferson, who plays a big part in my current release, The Lieutenant’s Secret Love. Most people are not aware that our first American president, George Washington, due to the financial straits of our fledgling nation, disbanded the small navy we had after the American Revolution of 1776. And we ended up paying thousands of dollars to Barbary pirates for the safety of our merchant ships in the Mediterranean and for ransom for our poor sailors captured into slavery. Thomas Jefferson decided we must have a navy, a strong one. He didn’t coin but he certainly lived the slogan, “Millions for defense, not one cent for tribute.” During his presidency (and described in my novel) our young U.S. Navy and Marines defeated the Tripoli Barbary pirates and made our new navy one to be reckoned with all over the world. I love writing about our nation’s history, which is constantly interspersed with God’s intervention.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels? I wish I had known how long it was going to take to learn how to write well and get a novel published! I have a blog series and class I’ve taught to writers to encourage them, “My Journey to a Book Contract.” It can be found at this link: https://bit.ly/3d4W1xf

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now? He’s teaching me more patience, gentleness, and compassion for the many hurting, confused around us. We must take time to reach out. He’s also teaching me (again) the principle of “first the blade, then the ear, then the full corn in the ear” Mark 11:28. I encourage troubled people believing for a breakthrough in healing, or in the life of a relative, or for financial breakthrough, to watch for the first, little green blade of progress and to praise God right then as if one can see the entire thing done. This illustrates a supernatural growth principle in the kingdom, according to Jesus, in the earlier verse. I also see my novels in this growth pattern and stay encouraged.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful? Here are the five steps from my above blog of getting to a book contract:

1) NEVER Give Up! (I wrote the first draft of my first novel 30 years before gaining a contract. Life and ministry took the driver’s seat until God opened the door.)

2) Hone your craft - a big, continuing step

3) Attend conferences and network with writing groups

4) Learn how to submit to editors and agents

5) Help other writers. When you sow help, you will reap it when you need it.

Tell us about the featured book. I had a great time researching and writing The Lieutenant’s Secret Love. Here’s the blurb:

An exposed family secret changed her life forever and blindsided his Marine heart.

From the day Hannah was abandoned as a newborn, her adoptive parents have kept the truth of her origin from her and her siblings. But when that secret is exposed, a threat arises which forces her to leave the only family she’s ever known and the adoptive brother she adores. She must start her life anew in Charleston.

U.S. Marine Lieutenant Adam White, harbors a secret—more confidential than patrolling the Caribbean for French corsairs, more threatening than the fight against Barbary pirates in the Mediterranean. Adam carries a personal, burning secret in his heart. He's fallen in love with Hannah since discovering she is not his blood sister. And the thought that she might only ever see him as her loving big brother may be the greatest threat to him yet.

As the Charleston men seek to win Hannah’s heart, she never loses touch with the man who had been her older brother. The man her heart can’t help seeing in a whole new light. But when Adam’s squadron sets out for the Mediterranean on the most dangerous mission of his life, only God can keep him—and their love—alive.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Charleston 1784

The dark lines of the master’s brow and his loud drunken command shot tremors through Ezekiel as he stood in the doorway of the master’s study. Cuddling a newborn wrapped in a blanket in his black, bony arms, he lowered his head, and a long, heavy breath gushed from his lips.

“I said take that baby and leave it far out in the woods to die. I’ll not have another female in my house. This ‘pose to be a son.” Carter Seymour’s harsh words echoed through the plantation house. He sat forward behind his desk and pointed his finger. “You hear me, boy? Don’t think I’m too drunk to mean this.” He slumped back in his chair where he’d spent the night as his wife struggled to give birth before she died.

“But, sirrah. She’s a healthy one. A real blessing on this Good Friday.” Ezekiel’s large hands shook, holding the small bundle from the previous night’s birthing. He bent his gray head down to look once more at the girl child with her curly blond wisp of hair, wrapped in a Seymour white baby blanket. “I’se real sorry about Miz Seymour. And look, this baby’s got that crooked little finger just like her mama.” He held up a little hand with its miniature fingers spread. The smallest finger on the left hand bent at the middle joint.

Seymour’s eyes widened when he saw the peculiar trait of his wife. “Take it out of my house. I never want to see it again,” he thundered, and reached for his whiskey bottle.

The child stiffened at the loud, angry words, and Ezekiel clasped her closer. He looked down at the tiny infant wrapped in the lacy covering with a C and S embroidered on one corner.

The little one whimpered and pushed a tiny fist toward her rosebud mouth. Her face wrinkled, and she began to cry. Turning, he stumbled out the door, shaken in mind and heart. He had no choice but to obey his master. His old heart hammered in his chest and made his legs heavy and slow.

Ezekiel passed down the long hall lined with servants who’d heard the master’s loud, drunken command and the babe now weeping. The maids and footmen stared at him with rounded eyes and stunned faces.

He walked through to the kitchen where his wife Molly stood wringing her hands. Tears streamed down her face. She handed him a sugar tit she had dipped in milk. Ezekiel gave it to the baby, whose tiny mouth stopped in the middle of a sob and latched on the little ball of old linen with a spoonful of sandy sugar gathered in its center. He headed out the back entrance of the large house and swiped a tear that trickled down his weathered cheek before it dripped from his chin onto the little one in his arms.

Leaving the plantation grounds, he trudged deep into the woods. Scents of pine, sweet cedar, and the damp earthy smell of decomposing leaves flowed around him and the child. The morning sun moved higher in the sky with the promise of more heat to come. He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped the sweat from his brow.

The baby slept after the sugar tit ran out, but soon awakened and cried. He fell down on his knees next to a dirt road at the edge of the forest. “Lord Jesus, you knows I don’t want this baby to die. I ain’t no murderer. I needs your help. I’se in a terrible place on this Good Friday ‘fore yo Resurrection, Lord. Show me what to do.”

GEORGIA ANN, ENGLISH ROSE - Elva Cobb Martin - One Free Book

Author Bio: Elva Cobb Martin is a wife, mother, and grandmother who lives in South Carolina with her husband and a mini-dachshund. A life-long student of history, her favorite city, Charleston, inspires her stories of romance and adventure. Her love of writing grew out of a desire to share exciting stories of courageous characters and communicate truths of the Christian faith to bring hope and encouragement.

Welcome, Elva. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I write colonial Christian historical romance because I love this period about the beginning of our great nation and God’s definite help in founding it. My love of writing grew out of a desire to share exciting stories of courageous characters and communicate truths of the Christian faith to bring hope and encouragement.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life? Here are three “happy days:”  a) the birth of our son, b) the birth of our grandson and c) the day I received a publishing contract for my first novel, Summer of Deception.

How has being published changed your life? Being published has given me satisfaction and more discipline to plan and write, and to help other writers.

What are you reading right now? Lily’s Dilemma (series My Heart Belongs in the Shenandoah Valley by Andrea Boeshaar), Maria by Eugenia Price, The Baron’s Apprenticeship by George McDonald, An Echo in the Darkness by Francine Rivers (Audio while exercising).

I almost always have 2 books going. One on my Kindle, which I carry in my purse, the other a print book I read at home. What is your current work in progress? Book 3 in my Charleston Brides series, Anna Grace, Patriot Rose, set in the American Revolution is my current work and in its final stages.

What would be your dream vacation? Touring the historical sites of England and Europe has been a dream of mine for years.

How do you choose your settings for each book? So far I’ve chosen Charleston, South Carolina, my favorite city, for all my novels’ main setting. Within that setting, I love rice plantations and sailing with privateers and pirates on the high seas and visiting various islands.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why? Vice President Pence. He has a great Christian testimony and seems like such a likeable, calm, wise person, and convincing assistant for our spirited President Trump.

I agree. What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading? My hobbies, when I can tear myself away from the computer and writing, are gardening and baking. I also like to crochet.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it? Show don’t tell and Deep Point Of View are still constantly on my study list in order to stay strong. Here’s a link to a blog series I wrote on this (keep clicking at bottom of each blog for the “Newer Post” to get the entire series: http://bit.ly/2J2Tnek)

What advice would you give to a beginning author? My paramount advice is to keep studying and writing and “Never Give Up!” My first novel was contracted thirty years after I wrote the first draft. I have an encouraging blog series and advice to beginning writers: “My Journey to a Book Contract.” Here’s a link: https://bit.ly/3d4W1xf

Tell us about the featured book. Georgia Ann, English Rose, is Book 2 in my Charleston Brides series. The hero, Samuel Valentin Vargas, is the grown up, privateer son of Book 1’s heroine, Marisol, Spanish Rose. Here is a blurb of Georgia Ann and Samuel’s story:

The lure of the legendary Spice Trail beckons, but he may never find a spice more precious than the treasure he left in Charles Town.

Two Charles Town men love Georgia Ann Cooper—Samuel Vargas and his step-brother, Joshua Becket—but only one both intrigues and infuriates her. Even though he’s a dangerous budding patriot and a privateer—or more likely pirate—Samuel fills her dreams and waking moments. When he leaves Charles Town for high sea adventure on the legendary Spice Trail, she determines to push him out of her thoughts and her graces. A task made easier when she sets out on her own journey to England on one of her father’s merchant ships.

Samuel Vargas is determined to make his own way in the world, not live in the glow of his parents’ escapades in Charles Town and the Spanish Main. There’s no better place to earn his fortune than the Spice Trail and along the Barbary Coast of the Mediterranean. But the adventure becomes more than he bargained for when, at Tripoli, he stumbles across a familiar face from Charles Town in a sultan's dungeon. He’s forced to use all his abilities to save the life of the woman he’s been trying to forget.

As their paths intertwine on a journey filled with Barbary pirates, intrigue, and romance, only love and the grace of God can overcome the past and ignite a new beginning for Georgia Ann and Samuel.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Charles Town 1760

Georgia Ann Cooper stood on the Charles Town dock in the early morning light and blinked back tears. She clutched the ruffled brim of her white hat to keep it from blowing away, and drank in the handsome figure of Samuel Vargas as he spoke to his step-brother Joshua. Samuel’s newly outfitted brigantine, the Eagle, bobbed in the Atlantic behind them with its fresh paint and rigging.

She and her father had come with Samuel’s family to bid him Godspeed on his coming voyage to the Spice Islands in the East Indies.

A venture she had tried her best to discourage.

Joshua clapped Samuel on the shoulder and laughed. “Brother, if you get arrested for piracy, I’ll do my lawyer best to keep you from hanging.”

Georgia frowned. Not a possibility she wanted to consider.

Samuel shrugged and moved on to his mother and Reverend Ethan Becket, his stepfather.

Marisol Becket took one of his large hands in hers and pressed it to her cheek. She looked up into his animated face. “Son, you will be careful? Not take unnecessary risks?”

He bent down and hugged her. “You know I will, Mother. And I’ll bring back spices for you and Mrs. Piper like you’ve never seen.” He kissed her cheek, and then looked back at Joshua with a smile. “And I won’t be needing any lawyers to get me out of trouble, either.”

Rev. Becket cleared his throat. “Samuel, I never dreamed letting you spend so much time on the Dryade with Tim Cullen these past years would go this far, definitely not to the far reaches of the of the globe.” He grinned and gave Samuel a hug, and then shook his hand. “Our prayers will go up daily for your safety and success. Write when you can.”

MARISOL ~ SPANISH ROSE - Elva Cobb Martin - One Free Book

Author Bio: Elva Cobb Martin is a wife, mother, and grandmother who lives in South Carolina with her husband and a mini-dachshund. A life-long student of history, her favorite city, Charleston, inspires her stories of romance and adventure. Her love of writing grew out of a desire to share exciting stories of courageous characters and communicate truths of the Christian faith to bring hope and encouragement. Connect with her on her web site at http://www.elvamartin.com.

Welcome, Elva. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
Not a whole lot. But I do tend to write in my moral sense, strong belief in God and the power of prayer, and love of adventure.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
I guess it would have to be returning to college as an adult married mommy and going to night school for ten years, taking one course, one night per week. But we finally got that degree.

Good for you. There was a local news story this morning about a man who quit school to join the army in WWII. He just graduated from high school, and he’s in his 90s. When did you first discover you were a writer?
I started writing stories in seventh grade and loved to compete with my good friend for best stories. My horse hero won the race, even with a broken leg! LOL! My writing grew naturally out of my great love of reading. As a child I read constantly. First, fairy tales, then other fiction, like Black Beauty, Flicka, and Nancy Drew Mysteries. Later, I delved into Charles Dickens, Nathanial Hawthorne, Emily Dickinson, and Poe. In high school, I worked on the school newspaper and began writing poetry (to my first love).

When I started college, I had numerous poems printed in the student anthologies. I married after my first year in college.

About ten years later I returned as an adult student to finish my degree. I joined a new writers’ guild some of the English professors formed at that time, and really began to become a better writer. During these years, I also began writing and selling magazine articles, as well as studying novel writing. Magazines that published my articles include Charisma, Decision, Home Life, Living with Children, Mature Living, Pentecostal Evangel, The Christian Writer, and several newspapers.

My first published piece was in the college anthology my freshman year. Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
Historical romances, Historicals, Mysteries (Robert Whitlow, John Grisham, Agatha Christie)

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
I keep a strong daily prayer and Bible study time and stay in church weekly. Also, I have a prayer team, and we share requests and pray for one another. Otherwise, I’d probably be bananas.

How do you choose your character’s names?
In my first novel I inadvertently named my hero and heroine the same names as a twin niece and nephew in another city and didn’t notice until I was in the final draft. I decided to keep the names, but then my sister, their grandmother, remarked that I should also name somebody in the book after their older sister. So-o, like a good Aunt I went back and did a find and replace for a woman lawyer and changed her name to that older sister. But that proved problematic. We kept finding the old name in the proof copies, so I can’t recommend doing this. NOW I am going to use only deceased relative’s names, if any. Other names come to me by my characters reminding me of someone I know, someone who probably will not read the book, for example. :-) I do like Bible names and I do research names for times in history to make sure they were in use. I have a Baby Name book that gives best names by certain years and by country which helps also.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Something immediately comes to mind, but I really can’t take credit, as I believe the Lord had the biggest hand in it. As an adult mommy, I dreaded going back to college to get a teaching degree because I knew I would have to take Chemistry and I had no high school classes in it or other college prep classes. But I stood up in front of our little church one Sunday, admitted this concern, and then confessed I was going to go on and enroll but I was going to take the Master Chemist with me. I ended up with an “A” in Chemistry which carried so many quality points it threw me up into graduating magna cum laude. I was in a pleasant daze through the graduation, but half-fearful they’d announce this designation an error before it was over. LOL

I graduated with a BA before I married, but I went to graduate school after marrying and having two children. I thought the students would kind of ignore me, but instead, they included me in everything even though I was so much older than most of them. If you were an animal, which one would be, and why?
I guess, a horse, as they are lovely on earth and will be in the supernatural future as Christ rides a white horse in Revelation when He returns to earth.

What is your favorite food?
Southern corn bread—I guess this goes back to my Cherokee great-grandmother.

What was your greatest writing problem/roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
I believe that would be POV and Deep Point of View and staying in it. I’ve done lots of study on it and now teach classes, but still occasionally find myself slipping out of the POV character’s head with a description or something, as my editor knows.

It took me until about my 3rd book to understand POV, and deep POV came later. Tell us about the featured book.
Marisol is Book 1 in my new Charleston Brides historical series. I already loved pirate tales set in Charles Town and the Caribbean (my first one was published in 2017, In a Pirate’s Debt). Also the idea of indentured servants who came to America from all over the world grabbed my interest. I began to imagine my heroine being born in the Spanish nobility but being forced to flee to the New World and ending up as an indentured servant. I researched Spanish women names and hit on Marisol, which means Mary of Solitude. I decided just how I could make sure she had to flee Spain in a great crisis, fall into many other problems, and would need God’s help and the hero’s help to find a fresh beginning and Happily-Ever-After in the New World. I also gave her my love of horses and a very special talent of dancing the Flamenco with an Andalusian horse partner.

The hero, Captain Ethan Becket, is a very special person also. I made him a former minister of Charles Town who now sails the seas as a privateer, sometimes pirate, grieving the death of his wife and child during birthing. The time period is also during the Spanish Inquisition. My book tag tells it all:

Escaping to the New World is her only option...Rescuing her will wrap the chains of the Inquisition around his neck.

Back cover blurb:
Marisol Valentin flees Spain after murdering the nobleman who molested her. She ends up for sale on the indentured servants’ block at Charles Town harbor—dirty, angry, and with child. Her hopes are shattered, but she must find a refuge for herself and the child she carries. Can this new land offer her the grace, love, and security she craves? Or must she escape again to her only living relative in Cartagena?

Captain Ethan Becket, once a Charles Town minister, now sails the seas as a privateer, grieving his deceased wife. But when he takes captive a ship full of indentured servants, he’s intrigued by the woman whose manners seem much more refined than the average Spanish serving girl. Perfect to become governess for his young son. But when he sets out on a quest to find his captured sister, said to be in Cartagena, little does he expect his new Spanish governess to stow away on his ship with her six-month-old son. Yet her offer of help to free his sister is too tempting to pass up. And her beauty, both inside and out, is too attractive for his heart to protect itself against—until he learns she is a wanted murderess.

As their paths intertwine on a journey filled with danger, intrigue, and romance, only love and the grace of God can overcome the past and ignite a new beginning for Marisol and Ethan.

I would pick up this book because of the cover and the back cover copy. Please give us the first page of the story.
Cadiz, Spain 1740
Marisol Valentin pressed her tearful face against the warm neck of her beloved mare, blocking out for a moment the sickening smell of human blood in the barn corridor. “Goodbye, my dear Jada.”

The horse nickered and nuzzled her, as if understanding. Dragging her feet out of the pregnant Andalusian’s stall, Marisol could no longer squelch the sob that escaped her lips.

She averted her eyes from the form lying in the moonlight near the tack room entrance. The still body of Diego Vargas, nobleman of Spain, sprawled across the dirt passage.

She’d killed him, but it had been her only choice.

Her breath strangled in her throat as she inched by. Somehow she made it across the shadowed stable courtyard and up the rear stairs of the hacienda. Bursting into her bedchamber, she shoved the door closed, and leaned against it. The pressure in her chest, the awful bile churning in her middle, they both rose up to strangle her. She drew in ragged breaths as tears flooded down her cheeks and onto her ripped gown.

Her maid Carmela dropped the camisole she was setting out on the bed. “Oh, my lady, what has happened?”

“Diego Vargas came into the foaling barn after I entered to check on Jada and he...” Her voice broke down. She wrapped her hands around herself and clenched her eyes to block out memories of his savage attack. “He’s ruined me, and I stabbed him.” Her lips trembled. “I only meant to stop him. Not kill him.”

Carmela gasped and her hand flew across her mouth. “Madre de Dios!”
