THE HEART OF CHRISTMAS - Ginger Solomon, and others - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, Ginger. Tell us about your salvation experience.
When I was twelve, my family and I went to a denominational church. I remember going forward to profess my faith and was baptized in a cold, dirty baptismal. But I was so excited that I went to school the next day to share with my friends. They didn’t care. And life for me didn’t change.

When I went to college, at eighteen, I was already disillusioned with religion. My mom and I had changed churches, to a different denominational church. I heard the words but didn’t really have a relationship. Though I wanted one. I just didn’t know how.

I met my husband, and he showed me what it truly meant to lean into Jesus and make Him my best friend, to study the Word, and learn more. ’Cuz when you have a relationship with someone, you always want to learn more about them, have fellowship with them, and spend time together.

That is so true. You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?
Oh, goodness. So many great authors that I would love to meet and hang with. But I’d have to say, if I could only have four that I would pull together some of the authors from the team I’ve worked with at InspyRomance—Valerie Comer, Elizabeth Maddrey, and Narelle Atkins. I think the fourth author would be ... oh, so many to choose from ... Ronie Kendig.

I’d love to be at that retreat. I love all five of you authors. Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.
No. As of yet, God has not called me to take that step.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?
Oh, goodness. When my husband and I were dating, I had an “accident” and made a VERY large mess of my pants. I had to borrow a pair from his much smaller sister. All she had was a pair of sweats. Not fun. I’m pretty sure he took me home after that. I don’t remember.

People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
Write it. The words don’t appear on paper by themselves. If you have a story to tell, tell it. No one else can say it like you can.

Tell us about the featured book.
The Heart of Christmas is a novella collection born out of a random conversation at our local writers’ meeting. I mentioned how fun it would be if several of us got together and did a boxed set for Christmas. We played around with ideas, and here it is. We have taken a slightly irreverent look at The Nativity. Each of us, Bonita McCoy, Darcy Fornier, Leah Fornier, Janie Winsell and myself, chose an element–from the angels to the wise men–and wrote a story. Because we have one member who writes nonfiction, she wrote poems for each of the stories and one for the whole set.

That sounds like fun. Please give us the first page of the book.
The first page ... well, that would be a poem.

Our Savior is Born
There is a stillness in the night
A star above the midnight sky
Shone bright and steady over a manger
Joseph and Mary looked upon
A babe wrapped in swaddling clothes
Suddenly angels appeared out of nowhere
To give glory to our newborn Savior
Out of the east came magi from foreign lands
To pay Him homage
Gold, frankincense, and myrrh were bestowed
For the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords,
Jesus, the ultimate gift to the world.

~~ Betty Boyd

And then, the first story is mine, so this is what comes next.

Chapter One
Nothing seemed right.

Every song on the radio fell flat.

The twinkling Christmas lights she hung around her bakery lightened the room but darkened her mood.

Alone was not how anyone should spend Thanksgiving. But alone she was. Orphaned at twenty-three with no living relatives that she knew about. Every invitation she'd received for the holiday seemed as if they'd been given grudgingly. She'd rather be alone than pitied.

A knock sounded at the door.

"We're not open." Her yell bounced around the inside of the bakery.

"I know. Open the door, Jenna."

Thomas Hayes. The last person she wanted to see.

She stepped down from the ladder, leaving the last string of lights dangling from the hook, and opened the door. He looked good. Too good. He’d trimmed his strawberry-blond beard and mustache, and it made him looked distinguished and sexy. Her increased heart rate because of his appearance made her even more surly. "What do you need?"

"Mom sent me to get you for dinner. I was supposed to invite you but forgot."

"I've made other arrangements." She didn't lie. Her other

EYES OF PEARL - Ginger Solomon - One Free Book

Welcome back, Ginger. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?
Trust and forgiveness typically show up in some way or another in all of my work. I didn’t start out trying to write about those themes. I didn’t even recognize it until several books in.

What other books of yours are coming out soon?
This has been a hard year for me, writing wise. I haven’t been able to concentrate on my stories. However, the sequel to Eyes of Pearl, Eyes of Her Heart will be out soon, as will a novella previously published in a set (Mr. Christmas and Miss Scrooge). I’m also working on another novella for a Christmas set scheduled to release in late October (as yet untitled).

At the beginning of the year (or late last year), God challenged me to Dream Big (my words for the year), so I did and committed to eight releases this year. I still have six to go, so I’d appreciate your prayers in this regard. The number wasn’t random, as I felt in my spirit that this was the number for me this year – four of them were already written/published.

Way to go! If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?
I’d love to pick Ramona Richards brain on editing and writing. I’ve sat in several of her classes over the years and just love her no-nonsense take on life.

What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?
I think I’d like to meet the apostle Paul and learn the secret to true contentment – being okay with where I am and with what I have. Most times I get it, and I’m okay, but there are times…

How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?
Having been on the receiving end of several rejections, as we all have, I would say keep trying. If you can’t not write, then write. Learn the trade. Try again. If all else fails, get a good editor and self-publish.

Tell us about the featured book.
Eyes of Pearl is book 1 in my Scottish Castles series. Each book will be a stand-alone featuring a castle located somewhere in Scotland. Here’s the blurb:

Desperation drives Neva MacKinnon to marry the handsome, but fierce Alexander Chisholm, Chieftain of the Chisholm Clan. Without him, she won’t survive the harsh Scottish winter. With him, she fears for her heart.

Alexander Chisholm needs a wife to provide an heir, and soon, in order to remain chieftain of his clan. He’s not looking for love, but his bride has to be someone he can trust. A song in the woods draws his attention and when he sees the raven-haired beauty with the eyes of pearl and full of fire, he knows she must be his.

Can Neva and Alex overcome their trust issues to admit their love for one another or was their marriage doomed the moment he invaded her life?

Please give us the first page of the book.
Scotland, 17th century
Neva Mackinnon darted in and out of the trees. The branches and vines pulled at her clothes, while the rocks and twigs cut her bare feet. Her pursuer followed with the speed and agility of no man she had ever encountered.

She lifted her skirt a little higher. Must go faster. Her knowledge of the woods would be her only advantage. Her heart pounded in time with her feet. She headed for the safety of the brush where she often hid when her brother, Darryl, had chased after her. She stomped in the opposite direction for a few paces. A distraction. Backtracking with light steps, she hid beneath the depths of an evergreen bush.

The man rounded the outcropping of rock she had used to hide her disappearance. That was why this was the perfect hideout. Even when chased it allowed her to disappear. Darryl had given up looking for her many times after she'd slipped into this hidey-hole.

She looked again at the man who chased her. It was not a man at all but a lad. A large lad, to be sure, and more than she could handle.

Searching the ground, he followed her decoy for only a few feet before he turned back and searched again. He would not be easily fooled by her disappearance. She held her breath, knowing that any sound she made would give her away.

LOVE'S CHOICE - Ginger Solomon - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, Ginger. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
Good things. God has blessed me to be involved with some great writers in the last year on two different, and successful, boxed sets. He’s also given me story after story to keep the flow going. As of this moment, I do not have any books scheduled to release, but if I can get my health concerns under control, I hope to re-release my Broken Holidays Series as a boxed set and make it available in print in the next month or so. And I would like to get a new Christmas story written and released, but I don’t have much time before it would have to be done, so… *shrug* it might not happen. Such is the flexibility of being an indie author.

Tell us a little about your family.
I have the most awesomest (yes, I know it’s not a word, but it’s true) husband and seven children, ages 24-12; five boys and two girls. We all reside in northern Alabama, though, sadly, no longer in the same home. I did my job well, and two of my children have flown the coop with a third looking to move out early next year. I homeschool the youngest three (the others have all graduated). We used to have a menagerie of animals, but for now we are down to one cat, one dog, two turtles, and a flock of chickens.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
Haha. Yes. I have less time to read, first of all. And second, I can’t read just any old book and be happy with it. I have always been a grammar nazi (ask my kids) and haven’t been able to read truly awful books, but now I see the big no-nos that I didn’t know about before – head-hopping, using was too often, etc. It makes it hard to enjoy certain books.

I know what you mean. When the story can silence my inner editor, it’s a good one. What are you working on right now?
Honestly, nothing. I had surgery to remove a tumor on my pituitary gland just over two weeks ago. I had a set-back a week later and was re-hospitalized, so I am still in recovery mode. I plan to get back into it asap and write that Christmas novella I spoke of above, but it depends on my continued improvement.

I’m sure my readers will join me in praying for your recovery. What outside interests do you have?
I love to sing in the choir in my church. I also enjoy playing video games with my sons, coloring in adult coloring books (it’s a great way to brainstorm a book), and various needlecrafts, but I have to be “in the mood” for those. J

How do you choose your settings for each book?
For the Belikarian Weddings Series, I originally intended Belikaria to be just outside southern Turkey, but it was a little too Middle-Eastern for my story, so I went searching slightly more toward Europe and found a little island in the Aegean Sea that belongs to Greece. It worked perfectly for my setting. I could incorporate Middle-Eastern and Greek customs and make my own story world.
As for my other stories, it sort of comes to me as I’m working out the basics of the story. I know a general setting, maybe, and I search Google maps for a corresponding topographical area, or I set it some place I’ve been.

I think my next few books are going to be based in my home state of Alabama.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
I think I’d like to meet Robert Frost. I have loved his poems for a long time, and I wonder what he was thinking when he wrote some of them.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
How involved the whole process is. I don’t mind writing. I can handle editing. I can make my own covers. I can even do the multiple blog posts required to market. But “pushing” my books on my friends via Facebook, Twitter, and all the other available social media outlets feels so intrusive. Yes, I want to tell them. Yes, they probably want to hear about them. ONCE. But when do I know? Did they see my announcement post? Re-posting about “me” is hard.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
Ahh. To be WITH Him. I went to the ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) Conference this year and sat in on a class that challenged me not only to write better, but to BE better by doing my writing WITH God, allowing Him the reins in my story, listening to His voice tell me where to go, and trusting in the outcome. Even if the story is not like what everyone else writes. Easy in theory. Hard to practice.

Yes, but it makes the stories so much better. I’m not a plotter, but I do have a storyline and a timeline. God often shows me things that improve my stories so much. What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
Never stop learning the craft. Be willing to try something new. Never give up if you feel called to tell a story.

Tell us about the featured book.
Love’s Choice is the third and final book in my Belikarian Weddings Series. For those who’ve read books one and two, this is Matthias’s story. Here’s the blurb:

Aileen Najjar joins the royal household when her boss marries the princess. She loves working in the kitchen, but when the head cook allows her to prepare most of the meals, trouble finds her. The handsome head of security turns out to be her ally as she struggles to fit in.

Matthias Firat wants to find the mole who leaked information leading to the attempts on the princess’s life. His attraction to the new kitchen helper prompts him to ask for her help.

When she discovers the truth, it might very well break both their hearts.

Please give us the first page of the book.
A sudden movement on one of the security monitors drew Matthias Firat’s attention. What was going on in the kitchen? He leaned forward to get a better look.

Someone stood in front of the stove, stirring something in a large pot. From the back, he couldn’t tell who it was, since most of the women in the kitchen wore black head coverings, blouses, and jeans.

Every few minutes one of the other kitchen servants would walk by and give her a little shove. She didn’t react, just readjusted her stance after each assault.

Another servant started her way. This one shoved harder, and the stirrer bumped into the pot, knocking it over and spilling the contents all over the stove and herself, if her sudden step back was any indication.

He glanced at a different screen with another view of the kitchen. The other women laughed. No one moved to help the stirrer. His gaze shifted back to the original scene. She turned to get some paper towels, and he grunted. Aileen. Pain flitted across her expression as she bent to clean the mess.

Just then Cook walked in, arms flailing. The spoon she always had in her hand waved like she conducted an orchestra. Aileen straightened but kept her gaze aimed at the floor. She nodded a few times but didn’t seem to reply. Cook stomped away, and Aileen resumed her cleaning. Without sound, Matthias had no idea what Cook had said, but by her angry gestures, he doubted it was anything complimentary.

An interesting intro to the story. How can readers find you on the Internet?

LOVE IN MISTLETOE SPRINGS - Ginger Solomon - One Free Book (or ebook)

Dear Readers, this is a Christmas novella collection with five authors, some of our favorites and some new ones—Ginger Solomon (our features author today) and these others: Gail Sattler, Lee Carver, Kimberly Rose Johnson, and Lee Tobin McClain. Ginger is offering a print book if the winner is in the US and an ebook if the winner is outside the US.

Welcome, Ginger. How did you come up with the idea for your story?
When the other authors and I started brainstorming, I decided I wanted the guy who loved to decorate for Christmas. And he needed to have a love interest who didn’t. Add on to that the fact that she’s his boss and doesn’t like animals, it made for some interesting conflict.

If you were planning a party with Christian authors of contemporary fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
Wow, there are so many wonderful authors I would love to invite. Only six. *sigh* Ruth Logan Herne for sure. She is always good for a laugh, and I love her books. I’d love to meet Valerie Comer in person, so I’d invite her. I’d also invite Carol Moncado and Elizabeth Maddrey for the same reason. All of them co-blog with me on InspyRomance.com. Finally, Ronie Kendig and Lynette Eason. I love suspense and would like to know how they come up with some of their scenes. J

Now let’s do that for a party for Christian authors of historical fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
Karen Witemeyer and Jen Turano because I’d like to pick their brains on how to get quirky heroines who always mean well. Mary Connealy because I just love her cowboy stories, and I think she’d make us all laugh. I don’t read much Biblical fiction, but I’d love to meet Liz Curtis Higgs (and take one of her trips to Scotland…drool). I follow Kim Vogel Sawyer on Facebook, and she has such a sweet spirit. I’d invite her (with Clyde). Lastly, Julie Lessman. I’ve read several of her books and her romantic scenes up the heart rate without being unsuitable.

Many times, people (and other authors) think you have it made with so many books published. What is your most difficult problem with writing at this time in your career?
Time. All seven of my children still reside at home. Three have graduated and are in college, but I homeschool the other four. They are in 12th, 10th, 8th, and 6th grade this year. I am busy. During the summer months, I get more time to write, but that’s also when our garden, berries, and trees produce, so I’m also busy with those. My goal is 5,000 words per week, but some weeks I’m lucky to get 1,000. It is what it is. I like to say that my full-time job is homeschooling, and writing is my part-time job, neither of which pay much, except in the satisfaction of doing what God has called me to do.

Tell us about the featured book.
My novella in the Love in Mistletoe Springs collection is entitled Mr. Christmas and Miss Scrooge.  Mitch Silverton agreed to be in charge of decorating for the fundraiser. And he needs his boss, Margaret Holberg, to donate her family's vast array of decorations to make the day unforgettable. BUT ... She's not sharing. Christmas is not a holiday she wants to celebrate in July, and saving the animal shelter is not high on her list of important things to do. He wants her to share more than the decorations. He wants her heart. Will he succeed in changing Miss Scrooge into Mrs. Christmas?

Please give us the first page of the book.
Note: The prologue details the shelter meeting referred to here.

“What do you mean he’s not here?” A hysterical female voice screeched as Mitch Silverton entered Holberg’s Hardware after the shelter meeting. Todd Richards, his boss, had agreed to stand in for him for a few hours. They switched when one of them needed a few hours off for one reason or another. It didn’t happen often, but now he wished he’d skipped the meeting. It sounded as if Todd needed a little backup.

Mitch glanced at Sean, their part-time worker, who shrugged and mouthed, “Miss Holberg.”

With a nod, he headed toward the office. Meggy had come to visit. Her first that he knew of since he’d been hired six months ago after he returned home when his mom was diagnosed with cancer. Her parents took off on a year-long trip around the world a few weeks later, leaving her in charge of the company, which included two hardware stores and a lucrative online business. He hadn’t seen her since she was in braids and braces, and they both worked for her dad. He took a deep breath as he rounded the last aisle.

“Where is he?” Meggy asked, her volume down a few decibels from the first time.

“He asked for a few hours off to go to the emergency shelter meeting.” Mitch recognized Todd’s pacifying voice—the one he used for upset customers.

“That’s no excuse for him to be away from the store. He should be here, taking care of things.”

“Now, Margaret—”

“Miss Holberg.” Her voice held enough venom to kill.

I can’t wait to read the rest. How can readers find you on the Internet?

ONE CHOICE - Ginger Solomon - One Free PDF Copy of the Book

Welcome, Ginger. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
They always tell writers to write what they know, so I do. I know me. A lot of me is sprinkled into my characters, especially my love of flowers, roses in particular. I also include a lot of my family’s characteristics. There are nine of us, so I have a lot to work with.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
Wow… this took a great deal of thought. I’m not a particularly quirky person.

When I was a teenager, I took a temporary job as the body inside a full-sized animal costume. We went to a local fair. I think it was in September. I remember it was super-hot inside the costume. We were only allowed to stay in them for thirty minutes at a time. See, told you. I’m not a quirky person.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
I’ve liked to write since I was a child. Sappy, awful poetry was my choice back then. I started writing novel-length fiction about five years ago. I discovered I was a writer when I requested a friend read one of my manuscripts, and she actually liked it.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
I really like reading romance of all kinds—Amish, fantasy, historical, contemporary, etc. I also enjoy supernatural fiction, and some sci-fi. These last two have to have a really compelling story line for me to finish them.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
Sanity? What’s sanity? I lost that many moons ago. No, really, I did. I think it was along about the time my fourth or fifth child was born. LOL

In reality, I’m not much of a runner. I’m a home-body. If I have to go out, I try to shove as many errands as possible into the one outing, and I make sure it’s a day I can remain patient.

In recent years, since my children don’t need my undivided attention, I make sure I treat myself to a day alone, usually spent writing, at least once a month. I recharge in private.

My children are grown and married, and I have grandchildren and great grandchildren, but I have all the privacy I need when I’m writing. How do you choose your characters’ names?
Sometimes the characters tell me their names, but just as often I have to do a search on the internet. I usually start with names that have a certain meaning and go from there.

My current heroine’s name is made up. Her father was of Scotch/Irish descent, so I started with Gaelic names. The name Cari means love. Her mother was of Turkish descent, and they live in the area around the middle-east, so I wanted the name to reflect that culture a little. I didn’t want Cari to be pronounced with an /a/ sound, so I added the “h” to make it more of the /ah/ sound. Thus the name Cahri was born. Josiah named himself.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
I’ve homeschooled my children since the beginning of their schooling career. Sometimes I wondered if I was doing all that I could to prepare them for the future. A few years ago, my second son graduated from high school and was offered a full scholarship to a local university. I was proud of my son, and proud that I had indeed done a good job.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
A horse. I have always loved horses. They are such majestic, athletic animals. I could sit and watch a well-trained horse for hours—or even a wild one. They look so happy as they run with their tails extended and their manes flowing behind them.

What is your favorite food?
I’m not sure I have a favorite food. There are so many that I enjoy. I guess if I have to choose I’d say New England Clam Chowder. It’s my go to comfort food—warm and creamy goodness.

My husband loves New England Clam Chowder. What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
My greatest roadblock is putting myself out there for rejection. I’m not sure I’ve overcome it fully, yet, but it’s getting a little easier. I just have to remember that what I write is not who I am, and the rejection is not aimed at me but at the words on the page.

Tell us about the featured book.
Cahri Michaels is American by birth, but Belikarian by choice. Being selected to participate in the Bridal March forces her to give up the independent life she’s created for herself. She’s not ready to be anyone’s wife, much less to a man she doesn’t know.

Prince Josiah Vallis despises the centuries old tradition—the Bridal March—that is forcing him to choose a wife from fifty women. Why does it matter that he’s twenty-five and still single?

When Cahri and Josiah meet, sparks fly. Will it ignite a godly love that can see them through or will they be burned, never to be the same?

Please give us the first page of the book.
Prologue
Proverbs 31:10 “Who can find a virtuous and capable wife?”
Kral Sarayi, The King’s Palace
South Belikara
March 2011

“Father, must I do this?” Josiah Vallis stood rigid, feet spread in a soldier’s stance, in front of his father’s large, antique oak desk. His hands fisted behind his back as his mind reeled with the humiliation of having to find a wife in this manner.
He had tried, but every woman he'd met, both on his own and those his father had arranged, were money-hungry, power-hungry, unattractive, or all three. The one woman he thought perfect for him had betrayed him. She’d had him fooled, and now he doubted his own judgment when it came to the fairer sex.

He didn't want a wife just to produce heirs and to hang on his arm like a showpiece. His ideal mate would be much like his mother—a woman who could love him for who God intended him to be, not for his family name and position. His desired wife would be kind and considerate, would care for others more than herself, would be giving, loving, and attractive. Most important to him, and even harder to find, was for his wife to have a personal relationship with God.

He gazed around his father’s immense office. All the furnishings, made of quality materials, were fit for a king. One day it would be his, though he’d never wanted it. As the remaining male heir, he had no choice. He peered back at the man behind the desk.

His father's eyes, a shade lighter than his own dark brown, moved away from the computer screen with a spark of irritation. He leaned back in the chair. “Yes, Josiah.
