THE PAGES OF HER LIFE - James L Rubart - One Free Book

Bio: James L. Rubart is 28 years old, but lives trapped inside an older man’s body. He thinks he’s still young enough to water ski like a madman and dirt bike with his two grown sons. He’s the best-selling, Christy BOOK of the YEAR, CAROL, INSPY, and RT Book Reviews award winning author of ten novels and loves to send readers on journeys they'll remember months after they finish his stories. He’s also a branding expert, audio book narrator, co-host of the Novel Marketing podcast, and co-founder with his son, Taylor, of the Rubart Writing Academy. He lives with his amazing wife on a small lake in Washington State.

How did this book come about?
I was in stop-and-go traffic, waiting get on the freeway when I spotted a black moleskin journal lying on the side of the road. Something compelled me to get out of my car—even though it was pouring rain—and pick the journal up. There was just a bit of writing in the front, and in the back was a “Jesus” emblem glued to the inside back cover. I started wondering … what if God had placed that journal there for me to find? What if I  wrote in it? What if God wrote in it, like he did on the wall in the Old Testament? From there the story took off ,and I soon realized the heart of the story was a woman who had stood up for everyone else but hadn’t ever truly stood up for herself. Until now. And her mysterious journal was going to help her on that journey.

Tell us about the book’s cover and what makes it unique.
I am so fortunate to have a brilliant cover designer. I love the way the writing blends into the background, yet if you look closely, you can see the script. And I love the way the water drops are there … but again, you only truly see them after a second look.

Please explain and differentiate between what’s fact and fiction in the book.
What a great question! All of it is fact, and all if it is fiction. Here’s what I mean: There are so many elements in the book I’ve taken from my real life. A job I had. Working in Alaska in college. Exploring the Northwest. The Oregon coast. Characters I’ve drawn from real life people I know. The fears and struggles I’ve gone through. All those things are in the book and are fact. Yet I filter them through my lens and I’m sure in some cases I’ve gotten things wrong. So much of life is perspective, and we all have different perspectives from each other, so those “facts” are often interpreted quite differently.

How much research did you have to do for this book?
Very little. Since I worked in Alaska, and the book is set in the Seattle area (where I used to live) and I’ve been to the Oregon coast many times, most of the research was in my head before I started.

What inspired and surprised you while you were writing the book?
Another great question. Most of the story surprised me. I’m not an author that’s able to outline a tale ahead of time. I need to discover it as I go. So in this case, it surprised me how much of Allison came from inside me. Same thing with her brother, Parker. So it was a novel of discovery not only with what would happen with the characters, but a discovery of parts of my life where I needed to press into the hard (but good things) God was bringing me.

What do you hope the reader takes away from the story?
Freedom. Always freedom. I want my stories to make people freer than when they started. And in the case of, The Pages of Her Life I want women (in particular) and men as well, to stand up for themselves where they might not have ever before. I want them to understand their worth and strength. I want them to be bold in the person God has destined them to be.

That’s one thing I like about your novels. They take us places we maybe haven’t been and deeper into the places we have, strengthening our walk with God. Oh, yes, and they are also entertaining. What is the next project you’re working on?
I’m working on a series starring a character named, Rembrandt Stone, who is a detective that solves cold cases by traveling back in time. I’m writing the stories with my great friend, Susie Warren and we’re quite excited about them!

I can hardly wait to start featuring those books. What do you do when you have to get away from the story for a while?
I love to get on my dirt bike with my sons or friends, or kayak with my wife in a nearby lake. I love the outdoors.

Please give us the first page of the book.
“Are you still glad we did it?”

Allison Moore looked up from her laptop Monday morning and studied her business partner and onetime best friend, Kayla Brown. Not at one time. Still best friends. At least that’s what Allison told herself. It’s what Kayla probably said inside her head too. And Allison wished it were true. But she’d discovered that people who say, “Don’t go into business with friends or family,” have a large slice of wisdom on their side.

Allison didn’t have to ask what “it” was. Going out the door. Leaving their old architecture firm, where they’d made gobs of money for the owners and not much for themselves. Now here they were, two and a half years later, working harder than they ever had and still not making much money for themselves. But it would come, wouldn’t it? It had to. Their heads weren’t completely under the financial waters, but she and Kayla did have to hold their breath far more frequently than they liked.

“Glad?” Allison leaned back in her chair and picked up her heavily caramel-flavored coffee, the only breakfast she’d had that morning. “Yes, I am. Most days at least.”

Kayla stepped inside Allison’s tiny office and sat in the chair on the other side of Allison’s oak desk, the twin to Kayla’s. Oak. Not Allison’s style. Nor Kayla’s. But the furniture had been affordable.

“Me too.” Kayla sighed. “I’d rather be poor and free than rich and in the shackles we used to wear.”

“I agree.” Allison took a sip of her almost-warm-enough drink. “Except when Seattle rain turns into snow up at Steven’s Pass and I don’t have the money for a lift ticket.”

“Our time is coming. With four new major accounts within reach, you have to be feeling good.”

“I do.”

The air felt stale—the same conversation they’d had too often over the past six months was undoubtedly the reason—and they slipped into silence. Another sip of coffee.

THE MAN HE NEVER WAS - James L Rubart - One Free Book (You'll want this one!)

Bio: James L. Rubart is 28 years old, but lives trapped inside an older man's body. He thinks he's still young enough to water ski and dirt bike with his two grown sons, and loves to send readers on journeys they'll remember months after they finish his stories. He's the best-selling, Christy BOOK of the YEAR, CAROL, INSPY and RT Book Reviews award winning author of nine novels, a speaker, branding expert, co-host of the Novel Marketing podcast, and co-founder of the Rubart Writing Academy. He lives with his amazing wife on a small lake in Washington. More at www.jameslrubart.com

Welcome back, James. The first line of your bio made me laugh. I interviewed Sharlene Maclaren on “The Lena Nelson Dooley Show” on the Along Came a Writer Blogtalk radio network. We talked about the age we feel inside being so far distant from our bodily age. Since you’re being published regularly, what new avenues will your future books take?
I’m excited because things are changing! I’ve always published traditionally, but I recently got the rights back to my first three novels so I’ll be reissuing them with added bonus material. In addition, I’m working on a series of indie novels with Susan May Warren that will start to release in 2019. My indie books will help promote my traditionally published books and vice versa.

I’ve been doing some indie publishing, and my last indie book won the Faith, Hope, and Love Reader’s Choice Award last year. It was the only indie to final. What conferences will you be attending this year? Will you be a speaker at any of them?
I’m cutting back this year on conferences, but will be speaking at the Spokane Christian Writers conference in March, at the Northwestern Christian Writers Conference in St Paul, Minnesota, in July, and at the Oregon Christian Writers Conference in August.

If you were in charge of planning the panel discussion at a writing conference, what topic would the panel cover, and who would you ask to be on the panel, and why?
Great question! The topic would be how to write from the deep heart, and the identity of a writer. The panel would include Susan May Warren, Ted Dekker, and I might slip in there for a question or two.

I’d love to hear that panel. How important is it to you to be active in writing organizations?
When I started out, it was critical. I made connections, found inspiration and encouragement, and formed relationships with people who are now some of my closest friends. These days I’m still involved, but more by trying to help other writers. I’ve formed a company with my son called The Rubart Writing Academy where I teach authors how to get published, and maybe most importantly discover the theme of their lives which gives the motivation to keep going when they fell like giving up. We did our first Academy last October and the students said it was life changing. It’s a thrill to get to do it with my son.

Maybe I should interview you on “The Lena Nelson Dooley Show” about the academy. Email me if you’re interested. Where in the community or your church do you volunteer?
Darci and I are in a wonderful spot (empty nesters) where we can invest time in younger couples who are going through the struggles of young parenthood and marriage. Also, I’m part of a weekly men’s group where we read a book and talk about it. Was a thrill last summer when they chose to read one of my novels. Quite fun being a fly on the wall and seeing what they got out of it.

If you could write the inscription on your tombstone, what would it be?
Brought the Light of Christ to Everyone Around Him

What if You Woke Up One Morning and the Darkest Parts of Yourself Were Gone?

Toren Daniels vanished eight months back, and his wife and kids have moved on—with more than a little relief. Toren was a good man, but carried a raging temper that often exploded without warning. So when he shows up on their doorstep with no notice, they’re shocked to see him alive. But more shocked to see he’s changed. Radically.

His anger is gone. He’s oddly patient. Kind. Fun. The man he always wanted to be. Toren has no clue where he’s been, but knows he’s been utterly transformed. He focuses on three things: Finding out where he’s been. Finding out how it happened. And winning back his family.

But then shards of his old self start to rise up from deep inside—the man kicked out of the NFL for his fury—and Toren must face the supreme battle of his life.

In this fresh take on the classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story, James L. Rubart explores the war between good and evil within each of us—and one man’s only chance to overcome the greatest divide of the soul.

Please share the first page with us.
Toren Daniels rolled over in bed and light pierced his closed eyelids, which meant five a.m. had come and gone. Which meant Quinn was already at the gym, into his third set. Which meant Toren would be buying lunch at the end of the week. And Quinn ate like a whale when he was training heavy. Toren groaned. He’d set two alarms on his phone and still overslept. Not good.

Toren opened his eyes for a second, then immediately closed them against the sunshine, far too bright. His head. Yeah, he’d been pushing his conditioning hard for the past seven weeks, but the haze swirling through his mind along with the dull ache that pressed in from all angles in his skull didn’t feel like the usual day after hard sprints and heavy weights. It felt like the day six years back, the only time he’d ever been rip-roaring drunk, after he’d made the team and all the vets forced Toren and the rest of the rookies to drink far past a rational level. At least he hadn’t puked. Right now? Same feeling. And his stomach might win this time.

What was wrong with him? He lay still, head on the pillow, eyes closed. Took in a deep breath, a vain attempt to clear his senses. Didn’t help. He ignored the pain in his head. He had to ping Quinn, apologize for blowing the workout. Toren covered his eyes with one hand and with his other reached for his cell phone, which he always placed in the same spot on his nightstand, a few inches from the edge, a few inches from the front. His fingers searched the smooth surface of the wood in widening circles. He blew out a sigh of exasperation, turned his head to the side, and opened his eyes again. The phone wasn’t anywhere on his nightstand. Worse, this was not his nightstand. Toren’s heart hammered.

“Sloane?”

He twisted and clutched a handful of the white sheets on the king-size mattress, blinking. Except for three pillows lumped up against the headboard, the bed was empty. His wife wasn’t there. His heart pumped. This wasn’t their bed, their room. The increased pulse brought a new level of throbbing to his brain. Toren did a slow half-circle spin until he sat upright on the edge of the bed, still squinting against the light. Why was it taking his eyes so long to adjust? He blinked and rubbed his eyes as he took in the room. A hotel room. Why? It made no sense. He’d gone to bed last night at home after a movie night with the kids, Sloane next to him, his alarm set for four forty. Toren staggered to his feet and wobbled over to the bathroom door.

“Sloane?”

No response. Toren pushed open the door. No lights. No Sloane standing under a rainfall of steaming water. He was alone. His pulse increased as his gaze swept the room and spotted nothing familiar except a pair of Nike sweats and a Seattle Seahawk’s T-shirt lying over the back of the overstuffed chair next to the window. Toren slipped on the sweats but hesitated with the shirt. His old team. The one he wanted to rage against for releasing him—but the cutting truth was he’d pulled the pin on that grenade all by himself. Still, whoever was behind this had a distorted sense of humor.

THE LONG JOURNEY TO JAKE PALMER - James L Rubart - One Free Book

Dear Readers, I always eagerly await the release of James L Rubart’s next book. He writing is awesome, as those of you who have read his works have seen. And the storylines take me to spiritual places I haven’t explored before. I love stories that stretch my belief in our awesome God.

Welcome back, James. As an author, I know it takes a lot of people to birth each book. Who were the people involved in the birthing of this book, and what were their contributions?
Although I had a great deal of help, the person most responsible is my wife Darci who came up with the idea for the novel. Every summer when our boys were young, we took them to the same lake. At the end was a wall of cattails and trees. One year we swam through the cattails and pushed through the trees to see what was on the other side. We found a wide, beautiful field. We all pretended we’d entered another land where anything could happen. When we were brainstorming Jake, my wife said, “Why don’t you write a story about the corridor? Where it’s a legend and no one can find it, but if they do, they’ll get what they want most in the world?” And the story was born.

I know I will love this book. My copy hasn’t arrived yet, and as always, it will go to the top of my to-be-read pile. If you teach or speak. What’s coming up on your calendar
This past year I spoke at ACFW, the Oregon Christian Writers conference, the Blue Ridge Mountain Christian Writers conference, the Writer to Writer conference, and at the University of the Nations in Kona, Hawaii. So far for next year, I’m speaking at a one-day conference at OCW in February and at Realm Makers in July. More dates are likely coming. I love speaking almost as much as writing.

If you had to completely start over in another place, where would you move, and why?
Probably Australia. Darci and I went there in the early 90s and fell in love with the weather, the beaches, the atmosphere, and most of all the people.

If you could only tell aspiring novelists one thing, what would it be?
There’s room at the top. Writing novels is hard. It’s the hardest kind of writing to do well that there is. But that’s good news because most people give up. So if you can’t stop yourself from writing, keep going, you will improve while most other aspiring writers are falling away.

You’ve been asked to be in charge of a celebrity cruise. Who would you ask to take part, and why? (AS in what program, singers, etc. [it doesn’t have to be writing related])
I used to be a semi-pro magician so there has to be a magic show. Phil Keaggy and Jeff Johnson and Jack Johnson would take care of the music, Ellen DeGeneres would probably do stand up for us, my friend Paul Young would give talks on theology, and I’d have my friend Riley do all his amazing food stuff.

Tell us about the featured book.
From the back cover:
What if there was a place where everything wrong in your life could be fixed?

Corporate trainer Jake Palmer coaches people to see deeper into themselves—yet he barely knows himself anymore. Recently divorced and weary of the business life, Jake reluctantly agrees to a lake-house vacation with friends, hoping to escape for ten days.

When he arrives, Jake hears the legend of Willow Lake—about a lost corridor that leads to a place where one’s deepest longings will be fulfilled.

Jake scoffs at the idea, but can’t shake a sliver of hope that the corridor is real. And when he meets a man who mutters cryptic speculations about the corridor, Jake is determined to find the path, find himself, and fix his crumbling life.

But the journey will become more treacherous with each step Jake takes.

Jake was given 4.5 stars by RT Book Reviews and made a Top Pick for August. Publishers Weekly gave it a rare starred review as did Library Journal.

Please give us the first page of the book.
If Jake Palmer had only kept the mundane promise he’d made to himself, his life wouldn’t be headed down a dead-end road at the speed of light. He’d vowed there’d be no more late-night flights. No more trips stacked on top of each other. No more landings at Seattle’s Sea-Tac Airport after midnight, which pushed him to physical and emotional exhaustion. But there he’d been for the third time in eight days. His phone rang as he pulled out of the parking garage, and Jake glanced at the time before he picked up. Twelve thirty-five a.m. Sienna should be asleep.

“What are you still doing up?”

“I miss you. I’ve hardly seen you for the past three months.”

“I know. Not fun. But Italy will be here in six short weeks. Then fourteen days of cruising where you’ll have to put up with me 24/7.”

“Maybe I should get some rest.” Jake laughed.

“How far away are you, Adonis?” Sienna asked. He smiled at her pet name for him.

“Forty minutes.”

“Get here now. I’ll wait up.”

“And sacrifice your beauty rest?” Jake tapped on his steering wheel and grinned.

“Yes, even though it’ll make me look horrible tomorrow.”

“Impossible. You’d win every beauty contest known to man even if you stayed up for a month.”

“If I’m asleep when you get home, wake me up. Promise.”

“Absolutely.”

Sienna blew a kiss through the phone and hung up. Jake glanced at his gas gauge as he headed up I-5. The yellow warning light glared at him, red needle on the wrong side of the empty line. Problem. Wouldn’t be good to run out before getting back to Bothell. He glanced at the exits coming up. Probably not the greatest section of Seattle to get gas this late at night, but running out here would be worse. Why hadn’t he filled up before the trip? Because his schedule was insane and there hadn’t been time.

Jake pulled off I-5 at the next exit. Quick fill and he’d be back on the asphalt river, home to Sienna before one twenty. He pulled up to the outside gas island and snatched his wallet out of his coat at the same time. As he stepped outside into the October chill, odors of pot and gas filled his nose. As he stepped to the pump, a battered Honda Civic with peeling dark blue paint lurched into the station and stopped behind his Jeep. A young woman got out, her black hair streaked with red and purple, her denim coat marred with grime and amateur images of dragons drawn with blue and red Sharpies. She swiped a credit card and as she pumped her gas glanced furtively past Jake at the street to his back, then at the street in front of them. She jiggled her nozzle up and down as if to try to make the gas flow faster.

“You okay?”

And as usual when you’re on my blog, you leave us hanging at the end of your page, wanting to know what comes next. Where can my readers find you on the Internet?

THE FIVE TIMES I MET MYSELF - James L Rubart - One Free Book

Welcome back, James. Reading your novels always stretch me spiritually. Why did you become an author?
Like many other writers, I didn’t chose writing, writing chose me. I remember when I was around twenty years old on a weekend getaway to the Washington coast where I felt so restless inside I couldn’t concentrate on anything. I sat down and wrote out the true story of how a friend and I narrowly escaped being mauled by a mama bear, and as soon as I finished everything felt right with the world. I can’t not write if I want to feel peace.

I so understand that feeling. If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?
Bear trainer. No, I’m kidding. Since I’m too old, and was never talented enough to play in the NFL, I’ll go with actor. I took acting classes in college and loved it. One of the items on my “someday” list is to try out for community theatre.

I don’t know if you knew that my degree is in Drama. And I’ve both written the script and directed in community theater. If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?
Let’s head for 1804, and give me a spot on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. What a rush to be journey across the US to the Pacific Coast, not knowing what kind of adventures you’d find along the way. No roads, no map, just the unknown quest in front of you.

I like that period, too. My only pirate book was set in 1804, but it took place in the south eastern part of the US. What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?
Darci and I have always talked about visiting the New England states in the fall. The golden and red leaves, the covered bridges, the quaint small towns ... take us there!

How about a foreign country you hope to visit?
I have never been to Greece, and we’d love to go someday. I can’t wait to scuba dive down there in the Greek Isles.

What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?
That it’s all about grace. Everything. The grace we give ourselves, the grace we give each other, and our willingness to receive the unending, exploding fountain of grace our true Abba has given us through Jesus.

I love basking in His grace for me so I can extend it to others. Tell us about the featured book.
The Five Times I Met Myself is probably the most personal book I’ve ever written. So much of me is in there. The question I ask in the book (and I asked about my own life) is, what would you do differently if you could make different choices? And what would that life look like? And is there hope for the future since we can’t make different choices? Here’s the back cover copy that will give you a good feel for the novel:

What if you met your twenty-three-year-old self in a dream? What would you say?

Brock Matthews’ once promising life is unraveling. His coffee company. His marriage.

So when he discovers his vivid dreams—where he encounters his younger self—might let him change his past mistakes, he jumps at the chance. The results are astonishing, but also disturbing.

Because getting what Brock wants most in the world will force him to give up the one thing he doesn’t know how to let go . . . and his greatest fear is that it’s already too late.

Please give us the first page of the book.
The dream had come again last night, just as it had sliced into Brock’s subconscious the night before that. A dream now dominating a significant portion of his waking moments. He had to talk to someone about it— someone with at least a smattering of psychology. Someone he could trust. His best choice was Morgan. His only choice, really.

Brock crossed Seattle’s 4th Avenue and looked up at the sky as it surrendered to dusk. Not long till the spring evenings would hold the light till after nine o’clock. He reached the other side of the street, strode up to the front door of Java Spot, yanked the door open, and stepped inside. Three-quarters full. The perfect number of people. Not so many that newcomers would turn away, but enough to tell people it was a place to be. Morgan had to feel good having that many customers at six twenty.

Brock glanced around at the 1940s motif. Posters of Rosie the Riveter and Ted Williams, an old Coca- Cola sign, and the famous shot of the sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square hung on the walls. Definitely captured the hope of a post–World War II populace. Or maybe Java Spot simply appealed to those who wanted an alternative to the corporate giant that had more coffee shops sprinkled throughout Puget Sound than 7-Elevens.

On one side: a cluster of what looked like college students, a few couples, and some solo acts. The opposite side: three people hunched over their Mac laptops, and a large group of mid-forty somethings laughed and pointed at each other in rapid-fire succession. What Java Spot put in its drinks was obviously the right concoction, which made Brock smile again, because he’d developed those concoctions being consumed in all fifteen of Morgan’s locations as well as the rest of the country and overseas.

Brock took one more glance around the coffee shop, then strolled behind the counter and said, “Not a bad crowd for a Monday night.”

“You can’t come back here.”

“Deal with it.”

“Nope. Employees only. Get out. Now.”

Morgan Myers lugged his sizable girth toward Brock and grinned. When he reached Brock, Morgan grabbed him by both shoulders and shook him like he was a stuffed animal. Yeah, maybe Morgan had put on more than a few pounds since their college days, but even after thirty-one years, he hadn’t lost any of his linebacker strength.

“Amazing,” Morgan said. “You actually have the hint of a tan to go with your slightly graying mane. A vacation you call work—but at least you got some sun.”

“It was work.”

“Uh- huh. A week in Costa Rica sipping coffee and checking out beans. Brutal. How did you survive? What, you were probably slaving away three, maybe four hours a day before you hit the beach?”

“Four and a half.” Brock grinned at his friend.

“When did you get back?”

“Five days ago.” Brock lowered his voice. “That’s when they started.”

“When what started?”

“When you get a moment, I need to talk.”

“The doctor is in.” Morgan tapped his chest.

“A degree in psychology you never used makes you a doctor?”

“I use it every day.” Morgan waved his paw of a hand at the crowd. “Spill it. Problems with Karissa? Tyson? Work?”

“A dream. More like a nightmare.”

Morgan beckoned with his finger and led Brock to the back room and into the office. After they settled into the small space, Morgan beckoned again with both hands. “Let’s go. Tell me about dem cah-razy dreams.”

SPIRIT BRIDGE - James L Rubart - One Free Book

Welcome back, James. How did you come up with the idea for this story?
Since Spirit Bridge is the final novel in a three-part series, I came up with the overall idea a number of years ago. The question I asked myself was, What if we could send our spirits into other people’s souls to help set them free? Out of that question came the Well Spring series.

It’s the three-book story of four ordinary people, a photographer, a radio station executive, a singer, and a physics professor, who do extraordinary things. It’s the story of people who learn to step into a greater destiny than they thought possible. The story of four friends who see God do truly marvelous things in their lives and the lives around them.

And this all came from my first novel, ROOMS. In that book, a young Seattle software tycoon inherits a home on the Oregon coast that turns out to be a physical manifestation of his soul. I always wondered what I would do for a sequel. The thought was others going into people’s souls, and that idea was born in the Well Spring series.

If you were planning a party with Christian authors of contemporary fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
Susan May Warren- if you’ve ever been around Susie for more than five minutes you know “Life of the Party” was coined with her in mind. She’s completely in love with Jesus and is so full of joy you can’t help but be caught up in her enthusiasm for life. I treasure the times we get to hang out.

Ted Dekker- Over the years, Ted has become a good friend and I love the way he challenges the way I think in so many different ways. I’m not a great small-talk person, and Ted likes to go deep immediately, and I love that about him. Our conversations are rarely under two hours, and it would take a full dinner party to cover all the topics of the moment on his mind.

Ronie Kendig- One of the most committed friends I’ve ever had. Darci and I had the chance to spend a weekend with her and her husband Brian last year, and they both feel deeply and love fiercely. She’s definitely one of my spiritual younger sisters.

Frank Peretti- I’d only met Frank in passing till a week ago. But at the Oregon Christian Writers conference earlier this momtn, he was in Allen Arnold’s and my class, “Live Free, Write Free,” and I got to know his heart a bit there. On top of that, Allen and Frank and I ended up spending about four hours together talking about life and the Lord and writing and everything else under the sun, and I loved getting to know not Frank Peretti the writing legend, but Frank Peretti the man who loves Jesus and is following the Holy Spirit wherever He leads.

Stephen Lawhead- I started reading Steve in the mid 80s and he blew my mind. I didn’t know his kind of fiction existed, and he was a huge inspiration for me to try writing that kind of fiction for the Christian market. I’ve met Steve a few times now and spent some time together, and he’s just as fascinating in person as he is in his books.

(William) Paul Young- Paul has become a good friend as well, and I’d have him at the party simply because of all the fiction authors I know, he reflects Jesus more than anyone else. He’s had massive success, but it truly means nothing to him except as a platform to love people.

Having these six together would make for a truly remarkable exchange of ideas. I would have to record it!

And I’d want that recording. Now let’s do that for a party for Christian authors of historical fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
Historical fiction? What is historical fiction? People write it?

That's naughty. How can you say that to a historical fiction author? Many times, people (and other authors) think you have it made with so many books published. What is your most difficult problem with writing at this time in your career?
Believing I can do it again. While I’m writing part of me says, “Hey, you’ve already done it a number of times before, so it’s proven, you can do it again,” and another part of me says, “Uh, yeah, you’ve done it, but maybe that’s all there is, it’s all gone now.”

In the end you have to relax, and wait for the Lord and what He wants to do together, and trust him and the ability He’s given you.

Tell us about the featured book.
This is the third and final novel in my Well Spring series (started with Soul’s Gate, and followed by Memory’s Door) and I hope it’s an epic conclusion to the story of the four Warriors Riding. Here’s the back cover copy which will give you a good feel for the book:

The Warriors Riding have battled in astounding supernatural realms. Set captives free. And awakened thousands of hearts. But now their only chance of survival depends on calling forth the Spirit Bridge.

Reece, Dana, Brandon, and Marcus have achieved staggering success in the spiritual realms . . . but each are reeling from recent vicious attacks. They need rest. A break from the war.
But the warlord Zennon is raging and will give them no quarter. The demon holds what he believes to be the trump card—a hidden strategy set in motion before Warriors Riding even began—that will detonate the team from the inside out. And he’s just set it loose.

The street-magician Simon—finally free of Zennon's alternate-reality prison—is racing to remember his past before his ignorance obliterates his destiny. Then there's Miyo—a brash young warrior with advanced knowledge of spiritual realities and supernatural armor even Reece doesn't know about. These two will be pivotal in final war against the Warriors Riding.

If only the Warriors knew which side Simon and Miyo were truly on.

If only they knew how to fight against Zennon’s final assault.

Spirit Bridge is the epic conclusion to acclaimed author James L. Rubart’s Well Spring series, which will propel each of the Warriors Riding on a quest of true identity, ultimate freedom, and a final battle that will leave them changed forever.

MEMORY'S DOOR - James L Rubart - One Free Book on This Blog, Plus More

Bio: James L. Rubart is the best-selling and Christy award winning author of, ROOMS, BOOK OF DAYS, THE CHAIR, SOUL’S GATE, and MEMORY’S DOOR. During the day he runs Barefoot Marketing which helps businesses and authors make more coin of the realm. In his free time he dirt bikes, hikes, golfs, takes photos, and occasionally does sleight of hand. No, he doesn’t sleep much. He lives with his amazing wife and teenage sons in the Pacific Northwest and still thinks he’s young enough to water ski like a madman.

Tell us about your salvation experience.
It’s summer after seventh grade. I’m at a Christian basketball camp and after one of the nightly talks I’m lying in bed and it strikes my little eleven years old heart that I want what the speaker talked about. I tell Jesus I’m going to follow him the rest of my life. Good choice. He is Life and restoration and freedom.

You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?
Only four? Wow. Tough. First on the list without question would be C.S. Lewis (did you say they had to be alive?) Lewis has been my biggest influence as a writer. Here’s a guy who wrote fiction, non-fiction, and excelled at all of those forms. Not to mention he’s one of the most brilliant minds of the 20th century.

I’d probably send an invite to Ted Dekker. Reading his early books gave me hope my kind of stories could find an audience, and in one of those fun perks of being an author, Ted and I have become friends. His brain works somewhat similar to mine so the rapid fire ideas we’d develop would be tremendous fun to brainstorm on.

Next would be Stephen Lawhead. When I first discovered Lawhead in the mid 80s I was blown away. Wildly entertaining stories with deep spiritual significance even though his stories weren’t overtly Christian. My deep, deep, dream (so deep I never told anyone but my wife) was to someday do what he was doing. Stephen has become a friend as well, and because he’s so different from me, I know he’d make the retreat a extremely memorable experience.

For the fourth member of my retreat I’m going to bend the rules slightly and invite Allen Arnold, the former Sr. Vice President and Publisher at Thomas Nelson Fiction who signed me there. He’s become one of my closest friends and helped me brainstorm Soul’s Gate, Memory’s Door, and The Spirit Bridge (the third book in the Well Spring series out next spring). He loves story and is brilliant at shaping novels from both a macro and micro level. So I’m going to call him an honorary author.

Wow, that would be a weekend to remember. Hang on, be right back, I need to make a few phone calls.

Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.
I do. I love speaking almost as much as writing. I’m mediocre at best in many things, but speaking and writing come naturally to me and they both make me come alive. I love seeing people set free. Love seeing light bulbs explode above their heads with hope and the belief they can step into the destiny and purpose God has planned for them. I love seeing people realize they have great worth and that they are truly loved. I’ve keynoted, done workshops, lead men’s retreats, and spoken to MOPS groups.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it? In the mid 80s, I worked at a radio station in the Seattle area. I was the punk-kid reporter sent to cover a Navy station that was being built a bit north of Seattle. The Secretary of the Navy was there. Booth Gardner, then governor of Washington State was there. Every TV station and radio station in the Puget Sound area was there. I got lost and arrived after Booth had begun to speak. So I carefully and quietly set my mic up on the podium Booth stood behind. But I didn’t do such a great job of setting it down. It slid off the podium and went BOOM!

Governor Gardner stopped speaking, looked down at me and said, “So where are you working tomorrow?” The entire room erupted in laughter which went on for thirty seconds. I’m not imagining it went on for that long. I had my recorder, remember. So I have the whole thing on tape. Not my finest moment, but in retrospect, it was pretty funny. A quick side note to that story: Years later I accompanied my wife and her 6th grade class to Olympia on a field trip. As we were crossing the capital, Booth Gardner of all people was coming straight toward us. He chatted with Darci’s class for a few seconds and then we asked him if he remembered the young reporter who interrupted his talk years earlier. He laughed and said, “Of course, that’s one I’ll never forget.”

People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
Buy a good pair of running shoes. Put them on. Sprint in the opposite direction as fast as you can. Then I’d get serious and tell them the story of the woman who came up to one of the world’s most famous violinists after a concert and praised him lavishly. She ended her comments by saying, “You’re so wonderful. I’d give my life to be able to play like you.” He responded by saying, “I did.”

Most people who want to write a book don’t want to pay the price. But if I sense they’re willing, I tell them to start reading excellent writing blogs like Rachelle Gardner’s, to go to writing conferences, to buy books on the craft and study them with the same intensity as if they were training to become a brain surgeon. That’s the kind of focus and dedication it takes.

Tell us about the featured book.
Memory’s Door is the second novel in my Well Spring series and as well-received as Soul’s Gate was (Christy Award winner in June), I think people will like Memory’s Door even more.

The stakes are higher, the lows are lower and the battles are bigger. There were a number of scenes that brought dust to my eyes as I wrote them, and that’s always a good sign that I’ve captured a few elements that will go to the deep parts of people’s hearts.

This is a deeply personal story that came out of time of spiritual and personal crisis and having to face my own regrets. Writing the novel was incredibly freeing (from my regrets) and in some ways is an expression of my journals and the struggles I went through while writing it, coming out in published form.

Here’s the back cover copy:

The prophecy brought them together. But the Wolf has risen, and now their greatest battle begins.

The four members of Warriors Riding have learned to wage war in the supernatural, to send their spirits inside people’s souls, to battle demonic forces, and to bring deep healing to those around them.

But their leader Reece is struggling with the loss of his sight. Brandon is being stalked at his concerts by a man in the shadows. Dana’s career is threatening to bury her. And Marcus questions his sanity as he seems to be slipping in and out of alternate realities.

And now the second part of the prophecy has come true. The Wolf is hunting them and has set his trap. He circles, feeding on his supernatural hate of all they stand for. And he won’t stop until he brings utter destruction to their bodies ... and their souls.

I read the book as soon as I received it. I love your books. They take me to spiritual places that make me grow in my knowledge of the spiritual world and our awesome God’s place in it. Tell my readers how can readers find you on the Internet?

SOUL'S GATE - James L Rubart - One Free Book

I anxiously awaited the release of this new book by Jim. I knew I wanted to feature it on my blog, and when it arrived, I started reading it immediately. The book is phenomenal. Frank Perretti introduced a multitude of Christians to the spiritual warfare that surrounds them. Jim takes readers even deeper into spiritual warfare with a finesse not many authors ever achieve. You will want to read it.

Welcome, James. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?
A friend told me long ago, “Every pastor has one sermon they keep preaching over and over again in different ways.” I think that’s true, and true for authors as well. I believe all of us are divinely designed with one main theme in our lives that resonates more deeply than any other. Mine is freedom. (Gal 5:1) I want every novel I write to bring people to a place of more freedom than when they started the book. Under that banner of freedom, I like to explore healing, spiritual warfare, risk, and stepping into destiny.

What other books of yours are coming out soon?
My latest novel, Soul’s Gate, released on November 6th. I’m so pumped about this one. I think it will really take people on a ride. Both huge entertainment and huge spiritual depth.

Publishers Weekly says, “Readers with high blood pressure or heart conditions be warned: this is a seriously heart-thumping and satisfying read that goes to the edge, jumps off, and “builds wings on the way down.”

RT Book Reviews named Soul’s Gate a Top Pick and says, “RT named Soul’s Gate a Top Pick and says, Rubart’s novel is enthralling and superlative. Truly a story about freedom from things that we hold onto, this tale will captivate readers and encourage a more active, dynamic spiritual life. The original plot and well-drawn characters elevate this book to “must read” status.

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?
Would you consider my wife a family member? My sons? Okay, give me a moment to think. I’d have to say, John Eldredge of Ransomed Heart Ministries. Why? Because his books, his retreats, and his team have shown me the way of freedom available in Jesus like no one else. I’ve met John a few times and he’s the real deal. The same when he’s in front of 1,000 people or ten.

What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?
C.S. Lewis and no one else is even close. He’s the main inspiration that made me want to be an author and his books (both fiction and non-fiction) opened up worlds to me I’d never known.

How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?
My friend Allen Arnold staggered me with a comment the other day. He said, “What if God tells you to write a novel and He wants to be the only one who ever sees it? Would you still write it?”

In other words as Christians we are writing for Him. Period. If it gets published, wonderful. If it doesn’t, still wonderful because we stepped into the journey he has for us and answered the call. I know that’s easy for me to say on this side of the pub world, but I want to have that attitude toward my writing.

Tell us about the featured book.
What if you could send your spirit into other people’s souls to fight for their freedom?

That’s the premise of Soul’s Gate. Here’s the back cover copy:

Reece stood and faced the group. “Every now and then we get a break from reality. A glimpse into the other world that is more real than the reality we live in 99 percent of our days. The Bible is about a world of demons and angels and great evil and even greater glory. A world the prophets saw; the world Enoch, and Elijah, and Paul, and John the apostle all saw. A world that is all around us in every moment if we would have eyes to see and ears to hear.”

What if you could travel inside another person’s soul? To battle for them. To be part of Jesus healing their deepest wounds.

Thirty years ago that’s exactly what Reece Roth did. Until tragedy shattered his life and ripped away his destiny.

Now God has drawn Reece out of the shadows to fulfill a prophecy spoken over him three decades ago. A prophecy about four warriors with the potential to change the world . . . if Reece will face his deepest regret and train them.

They gather at a secluded and mysterious ranch deep in the mountains of Colorado, where they will learn to see the spiritual world around them with stunning clarity. And how to step into the supernatural as powerfully as anyone in the Bible did.

The four have a destiny to battle for a freedom even Reece doesn’t fully fathom. But they have an enemy hell-bent on destroying them as well and he'll stop at nothing to keep them from their quest for true freedom and the coming battle of souls.

And if you’re into book trailers, here’s a link to the one we did for Soul’s Gate:  http://tinyurl.com/83sovl7

Please give us the first page of the book.
One

Reece Roth spun at the sound—a dull scrape like log on log. But there was nothing behind him except a small pile of driftwood worn white by years of ocean rain and wind. A shadow flitted in the corner of his eye, but as he turned farther to his left, the darkness vanished.

His heart pumped faster as he took another quarter turn to complete the circle. His feet dug into the russet sand, his gaze darting from ground to sky, taking in everything—seeing nothing unusual. Only waves and seagulls and an endless beach stretching beyond his sight both north and south. But the sensation that skittered up and down his back didn’t come from his imagination. Reece forced himself to breathe slower as he brushed his thick graying hair back from his forehead and squinted at the orange sun sinking below the horizon.

Calm. Abba’s peace. Embrace it. He needed to be here. To get comfortable with doing this again after so many years away. You killed them.

The thought slammed into Reece’s mind like a fist to his temple. Admit it. It was your arrogance. Your pride. Just like you’re going to kill the four of the prophecy. You will fail again.

“No.” Reece squeezed his eyes shut. it wasn’t the truth. Take every thought captive. Every idea.

He prayed against the attack and a few moments later the thoughts melted away. The power inside him was more than enough to counter any kind of assault. Without question Reece’s head knew it was true. If only his heart could believe with the strength it used to.

He looked up the beach to his right. A hundred yards away two men in tan pants and white T-shirts seemed to materialize out of the dusk. They strolled toward him, glancing between the waves and the rocky cliffs to their left. A blast of wind shrieked into Reece’s ears and kicked sand into his eyes. He slammed his eyes shut and covered his face.

When he lowered his hands and opened his eyes, the two men stood ten feet away. Smiling. Reece’s heart rate spiked.

“Good evening, Reece.” The man on the right flicked his finger toward the orange-and-red-smeared clouds and the sky turned dark. He motioned again and the thundering waves froze in place as if they’d been doused in liquid nitrogen. “You don’t mind, do you? Always nice to set an appropriate mood, you know?”

“Greater is he that is in me.” Reece riveted his gaze on the two men.

“Yes, we’re familiar with that sentiment. Thanks for bringing it up.”

Reece stumbled back a step. “Jesus.”

The man on the left smiled wider and pointed in back of Reece. The wood-on-wood sound filled the air again and Reece glanced behind him. What was a pile of driftwood minutes earlier had morphed into a sort of hut, maybe three feet tall and four feet wide.
