WANTED A MAN FOR CHRISTMAS - Janice Olson - One Free Book

Dear Readers, we have another Janice Olson Texas Serendipity series romantic comedy, and it is a Christmas story. I’m really looking forward to reading this one. I loved the first one so much.

Welcome back, Janice. How did you come up with the idea for this story?
Since Christmas is the season for giving, love, and quite often romance, I decided to write a clean Christmas romance.

How did I come up with the idea? I have single friends, who, especially around the holidays, hate to go to parties alone where the majority of people attending are married couples or have dates and they don’t.

The thought struck me two ways. First, what if Whitney Singleton, my protagonist, is in the same predicament but even worse—her boss expects her to have a date for the charitable Christmas banquet since she was in charge of putting it together, and it’s in two weeks—crunch-worry time. And what if she can’t find anyone suitable and who wouldn’t be an embarrassment. Second, I got to thinking, what if the answer to her dilemma was no further than her handsome neighbor next door, but she doesn’t know it? Let the fun times roll!

If you were planning a party with Christian authors of contemporary fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
This list is given knowing full well if I invite authors, we will laugh, have fun, eat a lot of good food, and always talk shop. Here’s my contemporary list:
Lynne Gentry, for her savoir-faire—her handling of affairs, which always shows up in her books. Lynne writes with the same know how, painting pictures with her words, and giving the reader an exciting read.
Kellie Coates Gilbert, for her savvy business sense and matter-of-fact way of looking at things. Kelly’s books are relevant with today’s problems and she handles them in a superior way.
Jackie Castle, for her off-beat practical sense and way of looking at a problem and working it out. She writes contemporary and fantasy and has a unique way at looking at life and portraying it in her books.
Michelle Stimpson, for her funny, funny sense of humor and way of telling a story that will have you laughing, thinking, and wagging you head at the same time. She’s multi-faceted author who strikes at the heart of the matter in a humorous way. Yet, she can be very serious in her writing also. She’s a joy to know and will keep you in stitches at any gathering.
Deborah Raney, she has a sweet, caring quality that come across in her books. And since I have only met her a few times in person and can’t claim her as a personal friend, she would be one I would enjoy getting to know better.
Francine Rivers, her years of writing knowledge and how she conveys her message of import that most often touches the heart of the individuals reading her books. This year it was an honor to get to know her and meet for the first time. We sat two enjoyable hours next to one another while signing books at a conference. Quite an interesting woman.

I love all those people, too. It would be an interesting party. Now let’s do that for a party for Christian authors of historical fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
My historical fiction list would consist of Lena Nelson Dooley, of course. Couldn’t have a party of historical authors without you, otherwise, who would set me straight on my historical incorrectness. You would keep the conversation lively with laughs thrown in. But of course, we would talk shop and you have a vast array of knowledge where historical fiction is concerned.
Patty Carroll, she always has a dry sense of humor that always livens a party or gathering of any kind. And her jump-in-there-and-get-it-done attitude with her writing is refreshing and challenging as she works out her plots to her western historical stories.
Connilyn Cossette, is a friend and new author whose stories take place during Biblical times. Conni with her sweet smile is always insightful. And her art of dropping the reader into ancient Egypt is like you’re there. She would add to the mix very well. Though her first book won’t be out until 2016, but she’ll be one author to put on the list to read. Exciting read.
Liz Curtis Higgs, is one who would be an asset at a party with all of humor and her knowledge. One talented woman.
Deeanne Gist, I believe, would be interesting guest to have come. I haven’t met her personally, but the sense of humor she brings to her books I feel she would be a fun person to know.

That would be a fun party, too. I’d love to attend. Many times, people (and other authors) think you have it made with so many books published. What is your most difficult problem with writing at this time in your career?
With the voracious readers out there, an author can never have enough books.

And in answer to your question as to my most difficult problem … time. Time is a killer. I am always working on my next book. And at this point in my life, I can’t afford for the holidays to slow my writing down, but I know it will.

With family gatherings and parties, cooking, writing, editing, posting, and working full time, there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done. Invariably, something has to be sacrificed. So I try not to sweat the small stuff. Accomplish what I can. Enjoy what I do get done. And don’t regret the things I couldn’t achieve.  Around this time of year, I guess you could say I’m dynamo on steroids, except I don’t take steroids. (Maybe that’s why I’m so tired.) I work myself into a frenzy getting as much done as possible, then put the things I didn’t accomplish on the back burner for another day, another year. Christmas will roll around again next year, good Lord willing, and I’ll do it all over again.

Tell us about the featured book.
Wanted A Man For Christmas is Book II in the Texas Serendipity series.

Whitney Singleton is your average single, young woman who has finally arrived at her dedicated field of expertise. At the present time she doesn’t have anyone she is dating and that becomes a problem for her, especially when her boss hints loudly to not come alone to the banquet.

To save face with her employer, Whitney needs a man. But not just any man. He has to clean up well, have good manners, and at least pretend she’s the next best thing to chocolate.

Adam Ryder, Whitney’s single, good-looking neighbor, offers the solution … a holiday Christmas exchange. He’ll be Whitney’s escort to the banquet. She’ll be his date for his Christmas party. At first reluctant, Whitney agrees. However, as time goes along and Adam hints that he wants something more meaningful than mere friendship, how does she back out of their Christmas swap gracefully? Or does she want to?

Please give us the first page of the book.
I, Whitney Singleton, am in serious need of a man. Not just any man, but one who can clean up well and at least hold an intelligent conversation without blurting out … yeah, right back at’cha dude, or some other such drivel. And he can’t be preening before a mirror or acting like he was doing me a favor being my escort.

Talk about desperate … that’s me. And all because of the biggest event of my career—the Children’s Hospital Christmas Benefit. Well, not mine personally, but for the charitable organization where I work.

Going over my options for the right man, I tapped my fingernail on the dining room table, my attention snagged by the Dallas skyline outside my high-rise apartment window. The long arms of darkness were creeping up the downtown buildings, snuffing out most of the light. And here I sat, no closer to a solution to my dilemma than I was this morning.

A dating service was out of the question. My friend, Sally Carlson, suggested one earlier this year. Been there, done that, and the experience was a total disaster. The service paired me up with three losers and then did their best to set me up with number four.

Bachelor No. 1 talked incessantly about his ten cats and his allergies. I listened, trying not to look bored while inconspicuously picking cat hair out of my food and mouth. Those little fuzzy pikers were relentless floaters, riding on the restaurant AC breeze into my food. Any other explanation for the cat hair would be unthinkable. Don’t get me wrong, I love cats, but there is a limit when it comes to floating hair.

When I complained the next day to the woman at the dating service and asked for my money back, she apologized and hooked me up with Bachelor No. 2, or at least that’s what I thought.

RUN ... YOU CAN'T HIDE - Janice Olson - One Free Book

Dear Readers, Janice Olson lives not far from me, and we’ve been friends for years. I love her books, which she has Indie published. She spent a number of years in the critique group that meets in my home and really honed her writing skills before she started publishing. I really like her romantic suspense novels.

Welcome back, Janice. Tell us about your salvation experience.
I was born into a minister’s home and was raised on the front pew of the church. From a baby, my mother taught my brother and me about the love of God and His amazing grace. Around the age of six, I realized my need of a savior and accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I won’t say I was a perfect child from that point forward, or that my way was easy, it wasn’t. However, the day Jesus Christ bought and sealed me by his blood, He also preserved me from experiencing the displeasures of the world. And to this day, I have never regretted my decision to follow Jesus.

You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?
That’s a tough one but I’ll answer with two authors I would love to have at a retreat and then add all my writer friends.

James Patterson for his mastery of marketing and his concept of outlining a novel allowing another writer to pick up his outline and write the novel for him.

Debbie Macomber for her ability to make you feel warm and fuzzy while weaving a tale of hearth and home.

Nora Roberts for the suspense she weaves.

Susan Mallory for her command of romance and series.

Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.
Yes, I love to speak to groups and encourage them that they can do the impossible. Since I deal with dyslexia on a daily basis, and I didn’t start writing until 2003, I particularly like to inspire others that they too can reach beyond their limitations and effect change around them or set goals and reach them.

I have taught in retirement centers, writers’ and readers’ group, and also taught biblical studies at women gatherings and at churches. It encourages me when I see a spark of hope in someone else when they realize they too can accomplish something they thought impossible.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?
I’m not sure I have a most embarrassing moment because my next faux pas is always the most embarrassing one to me. However, one of my more memorable one was the night of my first date with the guy who would be my future husband. When we said goodnight, I called him Harold. The next time I saw him, I called his Harold again, then promptly turned red when he said, “My name is Harry, my grandfather is Harold.” I didn’t forget his name again.

People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
When people tell me, I would like to write a book, I ask them, what’s holding you back? Their answer is generally work, family, and/or other such things. I smile. If they know me, they know why I’m smiling.

I work full time, have a family, and I write. It’s not the perfect world, nor what I would like to do, but because I am an author, I make time to write.

So my best advice to all the would-be writers reading this, there’s no better time than the present to sit down at that computer or pick up that pen and begin that book. Take some classes, read some books, join a critique or writer’s group, but while you’re learning how, write, write, write. That’s how you become a writer.

Very good advice. Tell us about the featured book.
Run … You Can’t Hide was a story that came to me while driving through the tiny artisan town of Ben Wheeler, Texas. A few miles outside the city limits we saw a sign Cabins For Rent, so my husband turned on the dirt road leading to a resort of sorts. We came upon a beautiful setting of rural cabins in among the tall piney woods with a small sparkling pond.

The thought came to me, this setting would be the perfect place for a person to hide. Consequently, the story of Aimee Hamilton was birthed which was a tough story to write.

Aimee full of spunk and a sense of humor is ever mindful there is a real threat out beyond her little self-made compound of safety. She desperately needs what her neighbor, Special Ops Tom Branigan can supply.

Tom Branigan, medically discharged from the service, wants to be left alone to wallow in self-pity for the hand life has dealt him. When he built on his gated acreage, he didn’t know his land butted up next to the property of a fiery-headed woman with a temper and persistence to match. Now she refuses to be turned away.

When Aimee and Tom meet for the first time it isn’t love at first sight, more like mutual tolerance. She needs his special ops training to stay alive. And though he doesn’t know it, he’s needs her zany, upbeat outlook to learn to forgive and love again.

Together, Aimee and Tom work to keep the killer from getting what he wants … Aimee.

Wow! Please give us the first page of the book.
Aimee Hamilton’s ’57 pickup sprayed a rooster tail of brown dust into the air as her truck barreled down the country road. So far, she’d managed to hit every rut and pothole left behind by the last downpour as she drove at a faster-than-normal rate of speed.

And for what? To catch a man.

Whew! What a change. She hadn’t wanted anything to do with a man since she’d run from one over two years ago. Now she was racing to catch her reclusive neighbor, Tom Branigan, an odd one at that.

Knowing the mailman delivered mail between eleven and one to the mailboxes lining FM 279 at the corner of the County Road 4614, Aimee figured Branigan would wait until after one to drive out to get his mail. She hoped her assumption was correct. If not, she’d be here at eleven tomorrow and stay until she caught the man.

Seeing her quarry standing alongside the mailboxes, thumbing through his mail, she applied her brakes. It wouldn’t do to pelt him with dirt or choke him with dust when she wanted his cooperation. That is, if he stayed long enough for her to ask.

Branigan must have heard her coming. Duh! The man would’ve had to been blind, deaf, and barely breathing not to know she was heading in his direction.

Glancing up from his mail, even with his aviator glasses shielding his eyes, she knew he saw her, but he skittered off toward his Silverado. One of her neighbor’s traits, a barely perceptible limping gait, was even more pronounced today.

Gaze locked on her prey, Aimee aimed her truck in his direction. She wasn’t about to let him get away.

I can hardly wait until my copy arrives. How can readers find you on the Internet?

MR. WHAT'S-HIS-NAME - Janice Olson - One Free Book

Dear Readers, I'm thrilled to share this new book by Janice with you. I've really enjoyed her suspense novels. Mr. What's-His-Name is a romantic comedy, and I love it. I know you will, too.

Welcome back, Janice. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?
I love to write about God’s unconditional love and forgiveness. In fact, all of my books have a thread of both running throughout the story. The reason being, God loved me and forgave me long before I knew I needed His love or forgiveness.

What other books of yours are coming out soon?
July 28, just four days away, Run … You Can’t Hide, is being released. Run … is the next romantic suspense in the Texas Sorority Sisters series (TSS series). And just in time for Christmas, I will have two releases, one in the TSS series, ’Tis a Season … for Justice, and the other, romance with a twist of humor is A Plus-One Christmas from the Texas Serendipity series.

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?
Billy Graham. I would love to hear about his ministry from the beginning and what he envisioned when he first started preaching.

What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?
Mary, the mother of Jesus.

I’ve always been curious how, at such a young age, Mary could so easily believe the angel’s message that she would carry the Christ Child. How did she feel, what went through her mind while she carried the Son of God. Also how did she feel watching Jesus grow up knowing his was the Savior of the world, or when she watched him carry the cross and was crucified, did she believe he would rise again? What was going through her mind all through that time?

How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?
Most well known authors have gone through what you are going through now and they still continued to persevere. For example:

Agatha Christie had 5 years of continual rejections until she landed a publishing deal.
Louis L’Amour had 200 rejections before a publisher took a chance on him.
Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen (Chicken Soup for the Soul) had 140 rejections, stating Anthologies don’t sell.
C.S. Lewis had years of rejections, and yet he kept submitting.
L.M. Montogery – Anne of Green Gables—after 5 publishers rejected her, she put it in a hatbox to only pull it out later and resubmit.
Stephen Kings’ story, that one of the best. He lived in the doublewide trailer, drove a rusty car held together with baling wire and duct tape. He threw his manuscript of Carrie in the trash because of the rejections and his discouragement. His wife believed enough in him to retrieve the MS from the trash, and the rest is history. He’s scared millions and made millions with his horror/thriller books.

Need I go on? The list of successful authors who had rejection after rejection, yet, became published and successful is extremely long. If you’re going to be a pubbed author, you have to have the perseverance to succeed. I know not every author can become famous as some of the ones I mention, but who knows what God is capable of doing for you if you will just remain faithful and not become discouraged and decided to give up.

Tell us about the featured book.
Mr. What’s-His-Name is a first for me. I normally write romantic suspense. But this novel was written as a fluke. Mr. What’s-His-Name is a romance with a twist of humor, and is the first in the Texas Serendipity series. I was having one of those moments where I allowed my mind to wander and just started writing. I soon found that I liked my heroine and her story so much that I felt she deserved her own book. Hence … Mr. What’s-His-Name, and the Texas Serendipity Series.

Tiffany Ann Gates is a typical young woman whose life dramatically changes when her VW is rear-ended by a gorgeous specimen of a man in an expensive Beamer. From that moment, Tiffany’s world completely spirals out of her control.

Soon Tiffany finds herself in the middle of a corporate merger and … she’s the bargaining chip. Influenced by a business mogul and the need for a job, she enters into an agreement but soon finds the bargain comes with a price. Realizing this game is for keeps, Tiffany has a decision to make … to protect her heart, or be swallowed up in a tug-of-war for love.

I’m going to love this book. Please give us the first page.
I heard the screech of tires. Within nanoseconds, my seatbelt did a chokehold as I flew forward. And because it functioned as designed, the airbag slammed me back in the opposite direction into the not-so-soft faux leather seat of Agnes—my 1992 VW bug.

And why? Because an egotistical, larger-than-life, master-of-the-office exec thought it his duty to conduct business on his cell phone while driving.

How do I know this?

Seconds before impact, I glanced into my rearview mirror. His was face animated, mouth moving, yet no one else was in the car, unless there was a littler person. And I, Tiffany Gates, not remotely related to Bill Gates of the dot com fame, had to suffer for his neglect.

In the seconds before the cars collided, his eyes locked with mine. Shock registered in his face.
If he was paying attention, he witnessed fear-stricken horror in mine seconds before he proceeded to smash into Agnes’ little bee-hind.

I can’t wait to see what happens next, and I like the different voice in this one. How can readers find you on the Internet?
I love to connect with readers. They can find me several ways, the best way, especially if they would like to become part of my VIP Readers’ Fan Club, is: www.JaniceOlson.com, or Facebook.

And thank you, Lena, for inviting me to your Blog. It’s been fun and challenging. However, I’d be remiss without saying what a blessing you’ve been to me as a writer. I’m so grateful that you have a giving heart.
Blessings, Janice

Thank you, Janice. Your friendship has been important to me for a long time.

CHAMELEON - Janice Olson - One Free Book

Readers, I've been eagerly awaiting the release of this book.

Welcome back, Janice. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
I have to laugh, because sometimes my horizon looks a little hazy. Yet I feel God is leading me to stretch and grow and dig a little deeper. He’s been dealing with me to do a book of devotionals, which I’ll produce in ebook form only, so that a person may read them on their Smart phone or reading device while riding the bus or train to work, or on a fifteen minute break at home or work. They’re short and sweet, but packed with God’s love and understanding. The release of Streams of Mercy will be after the first of the year, if not sooner.

That sounds wonderful. Tell us a little about your family.
I’ve been blessed with a wonderful, supportive husband who stands by me through thick and thin and is my #1 fan, big time. Without him, I wouldn’t be able to write and work a full time job. He is a minister, and though we aren’t in ministry full time at this time, he still works on his studies, writes, and ministers whenever the door is open.

My son and daughter are both vocalists and musicians. They use their talents in the churches they attend, along with their wonderful spouses, who are also Christian individuals heavily involved in church. Professionals in their own right, they all have a heart for God.

Then last, but not least, is my wonderfully, smart and loveable grandson, who is sixteen, and is also in church serving God. He’s been on quite a few mission trips already and seen places I have only dreamed of seeing. I have truly been blessed.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
I still love to read good suspense, historical, and of course romance novels. But now, I really appreciate a writer who has a good twist or turn in a book that I didn’t see coming, or an ending that completely stumps me, or the villain I couldn’t pick out among all the suspects. That’s when I really appreciate the author and all their hard work. Because, as a writer I know that those elements are some of the hardest to do.

One change, as an author, is when I start reading a book. I have to remind myself to turn off my internal editor—critiquing the story for how well or poorly it’s written and what rules of writing have been broken. Once I do, then can I lose myself in the story.

When I’m reading, I know I have a good story when that internal editor turns off by itself. What are you working on right now?
I am actually working on three completely different writings, which, you, Lena, as an author know, isn’t a smart thing to do. (It’ll drive you crazy) J

One is the devo I mentioned above, Springs Mercy.

The second is my first romantic comedy, and believe it or not, is a novel that doesn’t have one murderer between the front and back cover (although there’s plenty of murder on their minds). J It’s slated for early 2014 entitled, Mr. What’s His Name. It features Tiffany Anne Gates, who is a late bloomer, needs a job—which just happens to fall into her lap—and a wannabe writer, who is suffering from circumstances beyond her control. And …

The third is another romantic suspense in my standalone series, Texas Sorority Sisters coming in spring 2014. Hide … But You Can’t Run, has a little comedic relief in the midst of survival.

There you have it, all three of my projects in a nutshell. But like you, Lena, there are more novels sitting on the back burner of my mind waiting to come to life.

What outside interests do you have?
Jewelry. When I find time that I can spare away from my writing, I enjoy making jewelry. Putting together small pieces to make something beautiful is very enjoyable, especially when people see a piece I’ve made and like it, it brings great satisfaction.

Painting. Oils, acrylics, or water, creating with a brush is a lot like writing. I can allow my imagination to conjure up beauty, or when it’s not working somethime conjure up ugly. J

Traveling. I’ve never traveled outside the states except to Mexico on a mission trip. But I’m just as content driving around Texas. Less than an hour from my home I can find beautiful scenery—rolling hills, valley, lakes, creeks, and countryside that will inspire my imagination. Just like Ben Wheeler, Texas, a trip there brought about Hide … But You Can’t Run.

But give me a good book, and I can travel just about anywhere in my mind and experience many things through the author’s imagination.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
So far, I’ve been fortunate. My settings, at least for now, and if you have read my first three books know, all take place in Texas. My first book, Serenity’s Deception was a make believe town close to Austin, north of Brenham. But the following three were written with real Texas towns—Lethal Intent, Austin and Dallas; Chameleon, Athens, Texas; and Hide … But You Can’t Run, takes place in Houston and Ben Wheeler, Texas. I love to seek out small towns, or even large ones, and then set my story to fit with what takes place there.

Just like my next book, Hide … But You Can’t Run, my husband and I drove through the tiny town of Ben Wheeler, Texas, my mind began imagining what if, and the story was born. Ben Wheeler, if you haven’t been there, is two long blocks with Hwy 64 running though the middle of town without a stop light or stop sign. (Most residents live in the countryside surrounding the town.)

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
Esther of the Bible. I would love to understand how a young woman at the tender age of 14 could face such an uncertain future of obscurity, become a queen, and then, five years later step inside the king’s chamber to face death for her people.

Did she believe she’d be delivered, or did she figure her head would be lobbed off? I’d love to know what was going on in her mind. Did she have faith, or was she shaking in her slippers. In my mind, that would have been a sight to behold. What courage, what fortitude, what strong faith she must have had.

Esther is one of my favorite Bible characters. I’ve written a dramatic monologue about her and performed it a number of places … in full costume. What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
How difficult and how many hours it would take away from my writing to market my books. It wouldn’t have stopped me from being an author, but made me realize there is far more to a novel than just writing. It take hours and hours of writing and editing, then hours and hours of marketing to become successful. Though I love meeting my readers, I don’t like having to say—buy mine, even though I think they are great stories and great reads.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
Patience. It’s not particularly a new lesson, but one I haven’t completely adapted to, especially at this time in my life. Patience is something I lack, but something He’s trying to teach. In our world of instant everything, where we live on high speed, I’m like so many others, I want results now. However, He’s telling me to trust in him, believe in his abilities to work all things to my good, and to patiently wait on him. And I don’t mean He expects me to sit around and do nothing. He expects me to be busy serving Him with what He’s given me, but leave the results in his hands to complete. And for me a fixer, it’s hard for me to not want to try take over and run things. But I’m learning.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
One, become a serious and teachable writer by learning the craft of writing. Take classes, joining a good writer’s group, and write every day. (Once-in-a-while writing won’t cut it.)

Two, don’t try to take shortcuts, your readers will feel cheated. Every aspect of your story needs to be written well. Develop the story with well-rounded characters, who are flawed but grow during the story, and don’t cheat on the ending. Remember, every chapter is as important as the first chapter.

Three, write your story, put your baby (novel) to bed for a week or two, (if you’re not under a deadline and have the luxury of doing this step), then pick up your baby with fresh eyes and begin to give it a bath—rewrite, rewrite, and then rewrite again, until it’s the best it can be. But don’t scrub the life out of it either. Then, if you can afford to send your baby off to an editor for them to work their magic, do. You be well rewarded with the results.

Present day—Athens, Texas
Veronica Reeves took a deep breath of country fresh air, glad to be home, even if for only the weekend. She moved up the small knoll to the deserted canopy away from the rest of the guests and main festivities hoping for a few minutes of privacy.

Her jeans that had long lost their crease, felt hot and confining. Roni reached around to pull her blouse away from her sticky skin. A bead of sweat trickled down the hollow of her back, pooling at the base of her spine causing a momentary chill to cover her skin.

The scorching heat of summer showed no signs of relenting, making late September warmer than usual. From the south, a tall threatening bank of clouds moved toward the Triple Cross Ranch. The huge oak trees, along with the white tent canopies peppering the lawn were starting to whip and snap with the rising wind.

The stir of air felt good against Roni’s clammy skin, but she feared the impending storm would put an end to Marcus Peters’ sixty-fifth birthday celebration.

Samantha and she had picked a western theme for Marcus’s party. And by the turnout of the two hundred or so guests, the majority of them wearing cowboy boots, rhinestone shirts, and Wranglers, they had achieved success.

Roni slid her glass of tea on the table and sat down wishing she could free her feet of her boots and sink her toes into the thick, green grass. At the ripe old age of thirty and holding the esteemed position as the Peters’ attorney, there came a certain self-imposed decorum. For her, bare feet were not an option—maybe later.

Her gaze traveled across the grounds that encompassed the house and a small portion of the Triple Cross Ranch. The guests milled around under tents set up to prevent them from baking in the sun.

All-in-all, the birthday barbeque took place without mishap, if she didn’t consider Drake Peters’ earlier entrance with a gorgeous brunette hanging on his arm, laughing. Since their arrival, Roni made certain she was too busy to care what Drake and the beauty might be doing at this moment.
A movement down a little ways and to her right caught Roni’s attention. Well speaking of …

She shook her head as her gaze continued to follow Drake. He crossed the lawn with the grace of a panther eyeing his prey. Unlike most of the guests, he wasn’t wearing a cowboy hat which allowed the wind to whip his sandy-colored hair about his ruggedly handsome face. Starched dark denim jeans rode nicely just above his hips. And his tight abs and muscles strained at the fabric of his white shirt.

What he did for a shirt and jeans could only be described as pure male magnetism.

No one would call Drake drop-dead gorgeous, but he had a rugged quality with his chiseled Nordic features that caused women to stop and take another look and then … fall at his feet.
Roni let loose a snort of laughter at the picture in her mind.

LETHAL INTENT - Janice Olson - One Free Book

Why do you write the kind of books you do?
As a Christian writer, I want to provide a good wholesome read that my readers can enjoy and trust. To me this is the most important aspect of my writing. My readers won’t have to sift through gratuitous sex, cursing, and over-the-top violence. In my books, someone usually dies, but I don’t go into gruesome detail. But I do love to shock with the unsuspected. To surprise the reader and send them down dead ends where the antagonist is concerned is great fun. And if I can keep the reader from knowing who is the killer until the very end … all the better.

Also, I have always loved suspense. I grew up with Alfred Hitchcock movies and would sometimes shiver and shake at the images he produced, and go to bed with his nightmares. ;-) When I started writing, my mind naturally gravitated to a suspenseful story. I love for good to triumph over evil, which in my books is always the case.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
The day that I said I do to my handsome knight. He rode into my life one day on his trusty white steed (a 1961 white British Ford) and swept me off my feet. And I have never regretted saying yes.

How has being published changed your life?
I believe being published has made my life more hectic with its ups and downs. I love the ride of being a published author but there is always another deadline to meet, another edit to do, another push for marketing—the list goes on and on. And working a fulltime job doesn’t leave me with much time. So I would say, if all I had to do was to write the book and someone else did all the other routine business side of publication, I’d be in heaven.

What are you reading right now?
I’m between books right now with my deadline looming, but if I get a moment during Christmas holiday to read, I’ve downloaded A Biltmore Christmas – four short stories which should be a fun, fast read.

I loved that book. What is your current work in progress?
I am presently working on The Chameleon, my next book in the “Texas Sorority Sisters” stand-alone series. This book is Veronica (Roni) Reeves’ story and will take the reader from Dallas to Athens, Texas. The Chameleon has unrequited love, two murders, and a half brother that no one knew existed, and will be released in spring 2012.

What would be your dream vacation?
South Seas’ Islands. Since I was a little girl, again watching movies like South Pacific and other grand movies depicted on a deserted island—natives only of course, and having read Hawaii I have always wanted to visit those islands. However, I believe I will be sorely disappointed, as I was when we visited Hawaii, because I know the islands will be commercialized and not the uncomplicated lifestyle portrayed in the movies of bygone years—such is life. :-0

How do you choose your settings for each book?
As for my Texas Sorority Sisters series, Texas is my inspiration. I love the feel and appeal of small Texas towns and their charm, the countryside brimming with life, the beauty, and the wide open spaces. And we have so many varied towns to pick from which makes it easy to visualize and incorporate into my stories.

With my first book, however, Serenity’s Deception, I chose a fictitious town that just popped into my mind. It just felt right to plant the story in the Texas Hill Country down around Austin and Brenham (the Blue Bell Ice Cream fame). I apparently did such a good job with the town that one man asked my husband where in Texas was Serenity? He said he would like to visit Serenity and see where the story took place. My husband had a good laugh and said, it’s in Janice’s head.

Lethal Intent takes place in real cities—Austin and Dallas, which having lived in Dallas since I arrived in Texas, too long ago to remember, the story just seemed right and natural for me.

The Chameleon takes place in a lovely small Texas town—Athens, Texas—about seventy miles east of Dallas, surrounded by ranch land, small lakes, and rolling hills and, go figure—New York Texas (what an oxymoron) Cheesecake factory, boasted as one of the best in Texas. When I tried to come up with a town, east Texas was where I had in mind, but for the longest couldn’t settle on a town until I thought of Athens, and it fit.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
Laura Bush. In my opinion, she is a class act. She’s the epitome of graciousness and of how a real lady should act under fire. I’d love to pick her brain on her many transitions in life and if she were to do it over again—would she?

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
When I have the time, I love to paint—oil, acrylic, or water, it doesn’t matter. As with my writing, I can be lost for hours creating beautiful sunsets, flowers, and other things. I also love to do all kinds of crafty ideas. I made all the flower arrangements for Christmas as I do for other occasions and as gifts for friends.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
My most difficult writing obstacle is finding the time to write. Working fulltime doesn’t afford me the opportunity to write for long hours which I wish possible. But I’m thankful for the time and how God blesses me to jump right back into my story, utilizing the small increments of time available to me to accomplish a lot.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Attending writing clinics, workshops, and conferences are very important for success as a writer. And don’t stop there. Join a writer’s group. I am president of DFW Ready Writers (DFW WR), a chapter of American Christian Fiction Writers. Each month, DFW RW offers a speaker or workshop that helps hone the writers’ craft. Another must is to find a writing partner or writers’ critique group who, in love, will be brutally honest when something doesn’t work in your story or help you correct what you’re doing wrong so you may grow. As one of my writer friends often says and I repeat here, I’d rather have my feelings hurt by my writer friends than to be exposed as a terrible writer by the world.

Tell us about the featured book.
Lethal Intent is about Madison Fletcher who has lost her husband and unborn child to a madman’s bullets. When the suspect is set free, Madison decides to flee Austin to Dallas to a father she has never met and has learned to hate for his neglect.

When she finds a love interest, she fights the attraction out of fear. After attaining a modicum of security in Dallas, Madison learns the killer has found her and still wants her dead.

During Madison’s fight to stay alive, she has to work through the issues of hatred, abandonment, and retribution for wrongs done.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Lethal Intent
“Not guilty.”

Gasps were heard around the courtroom. Judge Colby’s hard scowl and banging gavel brought an unsettling hush among the spectators.

Numb, horrified, the words thundered inside Madison Fletcher’s head as the ceiling fans clacked and whined, mocking her. She wanted to scream bitterly at the injustice of the verdict. Instead, she held her breath.

Judge Colby repeated the litany of words, rendering another not guilty. He called for the third and final verdict. The foreperson took a deep breath, uttered a repetitive not guilty, then sat down as though a weight had been lifted from her shoulders.

The courtroom erupted as a death knell pealed over in Madison’s soul.

The judge banged his gavel loud and insistent causing a semblance of order.

She gulped air into her starved lungs, as her friend, Kelly Vandergriff, patted her arm. Madison clung to Kelly’s hand as if it were a rope, a lifeline pulling her up from an abyss that threatened to swallow her whole.

This isn’t justice. Her head angled downward. Her heart plummeted in utter defeat as her life seemed to shatter into a million pieces. How could this happen?

Quite a hook there, Janice. How can readers find you on the Internet?
They can go to my Website: www.JaniceOlson.com, or email me: Janice@JaniceOlson.com. Also they can find my books, Serenity’s Deception and the new release Lethal Intent at Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com for the Nook and Kindle. The trade paperback will be available on the 10th. Also, for registering at my site, their name will be entered into a drawing that one person will be selected to receive one lovely wooden jewelry box.

Thank you, Lena. Once again it has been a pleasure doing this interview for you and your readers.

SERENITY'S DECEPTION - Janice Olson - One Free Book

Readers, I will announce the winners later today, but first I want to introduce you to a debut author. Janice has been my critique group, and we're both in ACFW and the local chapter DFW Ready Writers. Welcome, Janice. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
I chuckled when I read your question. The reason being, my husband read my book Serenity’s Deception for the first time just last week and one thing he said about the book was – Janice, I can see a lot of you in BJ (my heroine). So I guess the answer to your question would be, a lot. J

Honestly, I believe a little of every author is poured into their characters and stories each time they write. The plots and stories that pop into my head are full of my experiences, and more often than not, my personality, my insecurities, even my idiosyncrasies are there too. But definitely my independence and eccentricities have a direct effect on my characters and their outcome.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
Quirky? Hmm. Several come to mind that I won’t put in print to come back and haunt me later.

But all I have to say is when my children were little I used to entertain them with my praying feet and my hitchhiking big toe. And I’ll divulge nothing more. ;-)

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
Growing up, I was a slow reader and my comprehension level was poor. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I found that I had dyslexia, the reason for my often twisted and/or missing words, inverted letters and numbers, and my difficulty in comprehension and reading. Once I recognized I had dyslexia I worked hard to overcome the results, which today is better, but I thought of becoming a writer until 2003.

That year, on a fluke, I sent in a short story to Writers’ Digest Contest. When I ranked 33 out of the top100 of over 30,000 entries, I began to wonder if I could be a writer. My husband, seeing my interest in writing, bought me my first computer and I’ve been writing ever since.

However, I began writing because I wanted to create good, clean, suspenseful stories like I wanted to read but couldn’t find without the curse words and sex scenes. American Christian Fiction Writers, DFW Ready Writers, and ultimately the critique group in your home, Lena, helped me to realize my dream today.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
My favorite to read is historical if it has a good romance and intrigue.

Right up there with historical is romantic suspense, my genre. I love a suspense writer to baffle me so that I can’t figure out whom, but that seldom happens. And then if I can find a book with great, unexpected humor, I’m in heaven. As you can see by my choices, I read purely for entertainment.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
My day begins at 5:00 am and doesn’t end until about 9:30 pm and sometimes later. I will admit, there are times it’s hard to maintain my sanity. ;-)

However, being a PK (preacher’s kid) my parents raised me to submit my life and place my trust only in God regardless what it might be and He will take care of me.

Through the years as a PK and a PW (preacher’s wife), time and time again, when my world would be spiraling down around me, I have witnessed that when I place everything in God’s faithful hands, my world ceases to be that chaotic, out-of-control, a thousand miles a minute existence. Instead, He brings about an overwhelming peace to calm all the forces around me to help me slow down and enjoy life. Psalm 46:10 says Be still, and know that I am God.”

When the run, run, run world takes over that when I have to remind myself Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God” and He is.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
Believe it or not, most of the times when a story pops in my head, the names come with the story. I think it’s the way my quirky brain works. One such instance was with the Amish book I wrote. When a friend suggested I write the story, I told them I’d pray about it. I did—pray about it that is—and two hours later, I had the whole story and the names of my characters all in my head. Not always does that happen, but often enough.

If I get stumped for a name, which happens but rarely, I will use a baby name generator and look up the name and meaning to make sure they match the character in my head.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Marrying the best man around and raising two God-fearing, productive members of society (my children) is probably first and second place.

However, one that I have to give God full praise and believe is the greatest accomplishment for me is becoming a writer and a speaker. As I mentioned, I have dyslexia and with the inherent problems and challenges of dyslexia there have been several times I wanted to quit. I knew there were people far more qualified and suited to be a writer and speaker without the problems, but God and my husband wouldn’t let me quit.

The first time I saw my work in print, which was a short story for Chicken Soup for the Soul—“My First Tea Party”I cried. And now to see Serenity’s Deception in print humbles me. Because it is only by the grace of God and my husband’s encouragement that has made this possible.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
That’s a hard one because I can’t really envision myself as an animal. Also there are so many to pick from. I’d love the ability to have sleek lines like a panther on the prowl; slide through the water then leap up and out of the depths of the sea doing several flips in the air like a porpoise; spread my wings and sore high above the earth like an eagle, allowing the winds to take me to heights unknown; and a graceful palomino gliding across the prairie, legs outstretched, seemingly flying over the earth in a gallop. So I guess that cinches who and why:  Panporeaglmino – that’s me.

I love it!! What is your favorite food?
That’s a no brainer. ;-) Chocolate! Chocolate and lots of it in any form or fashion.

But if you’re asking about food food? Mexican of course. Give me some good taco and enchiladas or fajitas, or Olvera Street (Los Angeles) taquitos or some of my own homemade taquitos loaded with guacamole and I’m in paradise.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
Finding time to write. I work full time at an outside job. There just isn’t enough time in the day to accomplish all that I would like to. I have stories sitting on the backburner of my mind yelling set me free! And I will, but not soon enough for me or my characters. However, God has given me the ability to eke out increments of time and accomplish a whole lot with the small amounts allotted, for which I’m thankful.

Tell us about the featured book.
The release date of Serenity’s Deception in ebook form is on October 25, 2012, the Trade paperback will be released seven days later on November 1, 2012.

Serenity’s Deception is BJ Spencer’s story and the first in a stand-alone series “Texas Sorority Sisters” (meaning each book stands alone but may have a minor character or characters show up in one book then later have a book of their own). The second in the series Lethal Intent, is Madison’s Fletcher’s story and will be released in ebook and Trade paperback December 25, 2012.

Check out my Website on October 25, 2012 and register for my blog and you will automatically be entered for a chance to win a wooden jewelry box. For details go to www.JaniceOlson.com

And here is the short blurb for Serenity’s Deception
No stranger to Serenity, Texas, BJ Spencer’s homecoming is met by more than bad memories. Her return provokes a furious ex-boyfriend, menacing threats from a Sheriff, and a town full of people who wish she would disappear … for good.

Engaged in a battle to stay one step ahead of the assassin, BJ and Jason O’Connell join forces to unravel the truth behind the lethal attacks. BJ’s quest for legitimacy uncovers secrets buried deep within the grave that threaten to destroy her. Plagued with doubts, BJ wonders if love can be found in a town filled with lies and deception. And can she forgive someone even when they are asking from the grave?

Very intriguing. (Of course, I’ve helped critique some of the book.) Please give us the first page of the book.

SERENITY’S DECEPTION

CHAPTER 1

Tentacles of apprehension wrapped around BJ Spencer as she climbed the narrow, dim-lit stairwell. The musty scent of old building filled the restricted passageway as each stair-tread creaked beneath her feet. A premonition that nothing good would come from this meeting gave her the overwhelming desire to turn around and head back to Galveston.

Not one for running, BJ clenched her purse strap and trudged up to the second floor landing. A whiff of Old English Lemon Oil hung in the air and assailed her senses with memories of Heritage House. For fourteen years she had done her best to suppress the memories of her lonely upbringing, but today the hidden childhood images refused to stay buried.

Forlorn children entering. Excited children leaving. Always watching. Never chosen.

She shoved the pictures to the back of her mind. A small poignant smile pulled at BJ’s lips. One thing for certain, her arrival today would stir up questions with the old gossips.

With no desire to return to Serenity, Texas, she’d fought hard to disregard the letter she had received five days earlier. An urgent matter regarding Heritage House made her nagging curiosity difficult to ignore the summons. Regardless how many reasons she could think up for staying away, there were many more for why she needed to leave her safe haven and come.

BJ hesitated in front of the diffused glass and mahogany door emblazoned with gold lettering—Hampton, Hampton, & Rigger, Attorneys at Law. Though the law firm occupied this same building before the town’s incorporation, she’d never had a reason to enter its hallowed doors.

She squared her shoulders and took a deep breath. With a slight tremble, she turned the glass doorknob, making sure to conceal her misgivings. Entering the law office caused long forgotten insecurities to come rushing back punching holes in her well fortified wall of defense making her ask, why did I come?
