MYSTERY OF THE HEART - Jillian Kent - One Free Book

Welcome back, Jillian. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
First off, thanks for having me back, Lena. I don’t know how you keep up with everything you do. God has been so awesome and faithful to me in my writing life and personal life.  Wow! I wish I knew what was on the horizon with all the changes in publishing. I can tell you what I’m doing and thinking about but it’s going to be an interesting year no matter what happens. For all of us who write and read.

I’ve developed some story ideas I’m going to submit to my agent and pray something good comes of that even though many are saying to go it on your own. I’m really interested in learning how to make my own e-book so plan on educating myself. None of us can take for granted that we can always publish the traditional way. At least that’s what it’s sounding like out there in the publishing world. A lot of folks are going to have a lot of thoughts on this subject I’m sure. And I want to dabble in short story writing and possible a novella.

Tell us a little about your family.
I’ve been married to my hubby Randy Nutter for thirty-one years. This August will be thirty-two! Hard to believe. We are both full-time social workers. I counsel nursing students in a hospital based college and he helps oncology patients and their families. We both love what we do. My mom who lives with us will turn eighty-eight this month and I have a birthday on the eleventh. My daughter Katie lives with us, she’s 23 and searching for her future and now addicted to inspirational fiction although neither of my girls has read my books. Go figure. My daughter Meghan is a missionary for Youth With A Mission and currently leading her own team at the age of twenty. She held off on college because she felt led to do this work. I have a feeling she will be the next social worker in the family.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
Yes. I love to read, but with all the demands on my life I don’t read nearly as much as I used to read. When I do it’s usually mystery/suspense.

What are you working on right now?
I’m working up an idea for a new regency novel.

What outside interests do you have?
I love learning. I’ve set a goal this year to learn how to utilize Scrivener and make an e-book. I enjoy prayer walking.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I’m an Anglophile. I love writing during England’s regency era and may soon explore the Victorian era as well. Maybe.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
The famous architect John Nash would be one. He was responsible for much of the layout and design of Regency London. I bet he knew a lot that he never shared with others being so close the heart of London. Hmm. Now that might play a part in one of my future novels.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
Not to write one book to death. Write one and move on.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
That I don’t have to be good at everything as much as I want to be.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
It all depends on the definition of success. But if you want to write and publish I
would say:
1) Study the craft. And by that I mean really study it and to do that you have to know                            where to start. Buy a book like James Scott Bell’s, Plot and Structure.
2) Practice, practice, practice. Just practice opening story ideas. Make them unusual.
3) Attend a conference and network.

Tell us about the featured book.
I love this book. Of course I like all my books but I think because this is the last in the series I have a special appreciation for it. I call it my Indiana Jones novel. It’s based in part on the legend of the Holy Lance, the lance that the Roman soldier used to pierce the side of Christ to be certain he was dead. The Bible doesn’t go into detail about this but it’s been very interesting to research and see why there is so much interest and speculation about this lance. Today, to the best of my knowledge based on extensive research, Austria, The Vatican, and Armenia believe they have pieces of the original Lance of Longinus or The Spear of Destiny as it is also known. Hitler was obsessed with the lance and there are thoughts that it resides in Antarctica

The novel centers around the youngest of Lord Ravensmoore sisters, Mercy who wants to be a doctor like her big brother, but in the time of the regency that is an impossibility, or is it? J She meets Vincent St. Lyons who is returning from a secret quest for the Prince Regent. Unfortunately for Mercy she’s washed up on the shore of Northumberland.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Chapter 1
Appearances are often deceiving.
Aesop
Northumberland, England, Spring 1819
Mercy Grayson gulped for air as another cold wave battered her, pulled her under, and scraped
her along the coast floor. She propelled her way to the surface, kicking and climbing through the water. God, help me get to shore. I have nothing left.

Sand scraped through her fingers, and then she tumbled with another wave away from it. Again and again she stroked through the water, hoping to reach solid ground. She gasped for air, silently prayed for courage, and choked as her mouth and throat filled with saltwater. The brightness of the sun inspired hope, and she pushed on, unwilling to let the sea win.

Sand from the coast floor squished between her toes. Her knees buckled when she tried to stand, and she splashed face first back into the water. Finally she gained a wobbly stance and forced herself to put one foot in front of the other. She’d made it. Looking heavenward, she simply whispered, “Thank You.” Once onto the beach she fell to her knees. Tears stung her eyes as she vomited seawater. Coughing and sputtering, she dragged herself farther onto the sand.

Weary to the bone, she didn’t care if anyone found her wearing trousers instead of a gown. She closed her eyes and vomited again. Vaguely it occurred to her that the trousers, her physician’s attire, had saved her life, along with the prayers God had seen fit to answer. Lying limp, she had only enough energy to kiss the wet sand in gratitude before falling into an exhausted sleep.

An annoying brush of twigs drummed against her check.

CHAMELEON - Jillian Kent - One Free Book

Welcome back, Jillian. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I love the time period. And because I’ve worked in the mental health field for 32 years I’m fascinated by the human mind and illness. Why we do the things we do is pretty much the same in the Regency as it is today.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
The day I married my husband. We’re still married 32 years later.

How has being published changed your life?
The crazy aspect.

I used to think I was busy. J Now I know I am. Writing  a series is a challenge. Writing and editing and marketing and blogging and everything thing else that comes with publication has changed my life. Spending time with family and friends has become more challenging. I work full-time as a counselor 10 months a year.

The fun aspect.

I get to see how publishing works up close. Even though I’ve studied the craft for 22 years there’s so much I didn’t know. Publishing is like earning a whole new degree. I’ve worked with 2 different editors so far and learned a lot from both.

What are you reading right now?
What Remains of Heaven by C.S. Harris

What is your current work in progress?
Mystery of the Heart, The Ravensmoore Chronicles, Book Three

What would be your dream vacation?
Hawaii with hubby.
British Isles with hubby.
Australia and New Zealand with hubby.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
Love England. I’ll probably keep writing novels set in England for awhile.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
J.K. Rowling. Because she’s an incredible British novelist and she lives in Scotland. I would want to meet with her at her place. J

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
Word find puzzles.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
Finding the hours in the day to do my very best writing. I never find them so I write in snatches of time. Lunch time, after dinner, late at night. Anytime I can find time.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Don’t work on one book forever. Finish it and write another one. You’ll want as much product and experience as you can get when you get published.

Tell us about the featured book.

How much can you really know about someone?
Lady Victoria Grayson has always considered herself a keen observer of human behavior. After battling a chronic childhood illness that kept her homebound for years, she journeys to London determined to have the adventure of a lifetime.

Jaded by his wartime profession as a spy, Lord Witt understands, more than most, that everyone is not always who they pretend to be. He meets Victoria after the Regent requests an investigation into the activities of her physician brother, Lord Ravensmoore.

Witt and Victoria become increasingly entangled in a plot targeting the lords of Parliament. Victoria is forced to question how well she knows those close to her while challenging Witt’s cynical nature and doubts about God. Together they must confront their pasts in order to solve a mystery that could devastate their future.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Chapter One
We should come home from adventures, and perils, and discoveries every day with new experience and character.
—Henry David Thoreau
London, 29 March 1818

St. James Park loomed in front of them, shrouded in a heavy mist that created difficulty for horse and driver as the coach and four maneuvered its way into the park.

Inside the vehicle, Victoria leaned toward the window, straining to see the outline of trees. “Such a disappointment,” she sighed. “This is not what I expected my very first morning in London. I’d so hoped to see more on the ride through the park, something exciting to tell Devlin when we get to his home.”

“Don’t despair, my lady.” Nora, her maid, pulled a heavy shawl tighter about her shoulders. “’Tis sure to be the same mist that abounds in Yorkshire. This nuisance will lift eventually. It always does.”

Victoria patted the sleek head of her dog. “Even Lazarus grows bored.” She marveled at her best friend, a behemoth of a mastiff, as he lowered his bulk to the floor of the coach with a loud groan and laid his head across her slipper-covered feet, creating a comfortable warmth. He’d been with her for years, and she couldn’t leave him behind. The poor dear would cry himself to sleep every night.

Victoria allowed the clip-clop of the horses’ hooves and Nora’s penchant for humming songs to lull her into a light sleep. Nora’s humming had comforted her all those years she’d been sick at Ravensmoore. While everyone else lived their busy lives out around her, she’d done little but survive, taking comfort in the small things that brought her joy.

A sudden crash caused the coach door to vibrate. Victoria screamed and bolted upright as Lazarus pressed his nose and giant paws against the carriage window. A low growl rumbled in his throat.

She grabbed Lazarus by the collar. Heart pounding, she turned to Nora. “What was that?”

SECRETS OF THE HEART - Jillian Kent - 2 Free Books

I'm thrilled to introduce fellow Charisma House/Realms author Jillian Kent with her debut novel. Welcome, Jillian. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.

I know that two aspects of my personality come out in my writing and those are humor and counselor.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?

Many years ago at a camping event I was hypnotized and I wouldn’t have believed it but for the fact that I couldn’t pull my index fingers apart from each other. Go figure. J

When did you first discover that you were a writer?

In seventh grade I wrote a piece about an ant watching Julius Caesar’s assassination. I think the thought that I could write occurred then.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.

I love historical romance with a heavy mystery/suspense element. I like romantic comedy but can’t say I’ve read any lately. Love Sherlock Holmes. Enjoy some of Julia Quinn’s books as well as Amanda Quick, Liz Curtis Higgs, Francine Rivers, Nancy Moser. Mike Dellosso has me reading his books: Scream, Darlington Woods. Love James Scott Bell and many, many more.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?

Sanity? What’s that? Just because I’m a full time counselor doesn’t mean I’m sane. Sanity’s not all that’s cracked up to be. J That’s why there are lunatic asylums in my novels. Let’s see. I do enjoy a massage now and then and I’m joining a LifeSteps group to get my body in shape again and taking a new look at nutrition.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
I love choosing character names. Really. I use Character Naming books, Baby Name books, Telephone books, and name generating spots on line. Great fun!

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?

It would have to be getting my three book contract with Charisma House.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?

A wild horse. Run free and play with your friends. J

What is your favorite food?

That’s my problem. I love everything. Probably pasta.

Tell us a little about your journey to publication.

I’ve been studying the craft for a good twenty years. Writing for the past ten a lot more than I did the first ten. When Debbie Marrie posted on our loop at ACFW that she was looking for historical romance I  sent her a proposal. Alas, she wrote back that she meant they were only looking for Prarie Romance and I write during the Regency era. Many months later she e-mailed me and asked, “Have you sold your book yet?” I said there was some interest but no one had made an offer yet. Debbie said that fifteen folks at Charisma had read my book and they decided to offer me a contract after much positive feedback. I think I went a bit numb. J Then I e-mailed James Scott Bell who had mentored me at Mt.  Hermon and he suggested I contact Rachelle Gardner. Rachelle kindly took me on and that’s my story. Thank you, Jesus!

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?

I fall in love with my secondary characters and have learned I can’t let them take over.

What advice would you give to others who are trying to get their first book published?

Don’t work on one book too long. Write it and gain more experience and have more than one book when you get that long awaited for call or e-mail. Go to conferences and learn.

Tell us about the featured book.

An English noblewoman rescues a runaway from an insane asylum which changes her life forever. My protagonist, Lady Madeline Whittington, has come out of mourning her siblings and more recently her father. Ah, but there is a connection to the death of her father and our hero. What I  love about my hero is that, Devlin Grayson, Lord Ravensmoore took a huge risk. He’s a nobleman training to become a physician. His father and brother died at sea and left him with the title. However, he wants to be the doctor he feels God called him to be. When he and Maddie meet, LOOK OUT!

Please give us the first page of the book.

You can read the entire first chapter at my website which I hope you will visit often. http://jilliankent.com/books.html
