ELIZA'S HOPE - June Foster and Kelly Cordova - One Free Book

Welcome back, June, and welcome, Kelly. I know this is a collaboration. How did this story come about? I mentioned to my daughter that my publisher asked for historical romances set in the Gold Rush days. She loves to read historical novels, so I asked her if she wanted to join me in writing a historical romance. She readily agreed and said she looked forward to it.

Did you find it easy to work together on it? Oh, yes. I don't always find it easy to work with others on writing projects so I was pleasantly surprised at how well we worked together. Especially in light of the fact she'd never written a novel before and I had never co-authored before.

How did collaborating impact you? I believe my daughter Kelly's ideas helped to spark my own and vice versa. She would have an idea, and I was able to expand on it.

That sounds great. What is the hardest thing about writing as a team? The communication was hardest. We used Marco Polo, text, email, and phone chats as we lived in two different states. Fortunately, my daughter was available most any time of the day as she doesn't work outside the home.

What are you reading right now? I'm reading Stacey Simmons' new release, A Promise for Faith.

I’m eager to get that book soon. How did you choose your characters’ names? Kelly chose the names she liked from that era. In fact, she plotted the entire story on her own. I did the larger part of the writing, and she wrote some of the scenes. She created a lovely motif that appeared throughout the story – the monarch butterfly.

Would you want to work on another book together? Most definitely. Kelly energized my ideas and allowed me to become even more creative. Writing can be a lonely venture, and it was wonderful having someone with whom to confer.

What do you want to tell us about the book? Here's a blurb. On the ship from Ireland, Eliza O’Connor loses her mother and husband to cholera. She longs to become a doctor after training under the local physician, but few schools accept women. Now that the doctor has passed away, she works at her father's boarding house. When a handsome doctor arrives beaten and stripped of his jacket and boots, she believes he's another gold-crazy miner heading for the hills where her brother has ventured.

At his mother's desperate request, Dr. Levi Dumont travels from Boston to find his younger brother and bring him home. After Levi is robbed and beaten, his trustworthy horse drops him in back of the O'Connor's Boarding House where the enchanting Eliza treats his wounds.

When Eliza's brother returns from the gold fields with a broken leg, Eliza learns her friend needs medical attention. Eliza is determined to make the treacherous journey. When she accompanies Levi to Diamond Falls, Levi discovers affection for Eliza despite his engagement to a woman in Boston.

Though Eliza and Levi come from different worlds, their hopes are the same. Will Eliza find opportunity to study medicine? Can Levi find a life with Eliza despite his fiancé and medical practice in Boston?

Please give us the first page of the book.

Buena Esperanza, California

Eliza O'Connor tucked a strand of her long thick hair behind her ear, fetched the wooden tray of mugs brimming with ale, and swept into the dining room of her father's boarding house.

"Eliza. Hurry up. We're thirsty," one of the fifteen miners demanded while the others slammed their fists on the dining room table that almost extended the length of the room.

"Hush your mouths. I'll be to your table when I'm good and ready." She steadied the tray and made her way closer to the noisy men. A tug on her skirt set her off balance.

"Lizzie, doll, when ya gonna marry me?" Tommy Brown flirted with her every chance he got it seemed.

"Go bother someone else." Eliza jerked away from the attentive miner and slipped on a puddle of ale. Her feet flew out from under her, sending her onto the rough wood floor as the tray sailed from her hands, the sound of shattering glass warning of her worst fear. She landed in an unladylike pose with her legs sprawled out in front. She'd broken eight of Papa's best glassware.

"Oops," Tommy smirked. "But ya know you want to marry me. I'll make you rich, girl."

Tommy's riotous laugh sent heat rushing through her body. The other miners might think he wanted to marry her, but he had no real interest in her. The women Tommy sought were bought and paid for. He didn't want to settle down. Still, she wouldn't mind slapping the smirk right off his face.

But what if she led the other miners to believe she was Tommy's girl? He'd never taken the thought seriously, but the others might. That way they'd keep their hands off her. She gave herself a pat on the back. Her plan would work.

The kindly old miner who sat at the end of the table stood and offered his hand.

"Thank you, sir." She scurried off to the kitchen to grab an empty box, the broom, the mop, and the bucket from the storage room. Then she raced back into the dining room. A few mugs had remained intact. She gathered them onto the tray she retrieved from the floor and swept the shards of glass into the box. Then she scrubbed the mop over the floor to soaked up the ale.

"What's the problem, Sweat Pea?" Papa strode in from chopping wood.

"Oh, Tommy's acting the maggot." She hauled the box of broken glass into the kitchen and peered out the window.

Across the street, one of Buena Esperanza's finest ladies floated along the boardwalk, her lace-trimmed skirt fashionable over her petticoat and her bonnet perfectly secured under her chin with a satin ribbon.

Eliza smoothed the skirt of her plain, wool dress. A poor Irish immigrant, she would never be accepted into the same social circles as the mayor's wife. She held up a polished cooking pot and peered at her reflection. Bright green eyes stared back. She had smooth pale skin and a spattering of amber freckles. Nope, she could never be refined like that woman. But she didn't want to join up with the members of high society. She had other things to accomplish in life.

"Sweet Pea, don't let that bulk of a man bother ya," her father said from behind her.

THE INN AT CRANBERRY COVE - June Foster - One Free Book (Print edition if winner is from the US. Ebook if winner is not.)

Dear Readers, it gives me great pleasure to introduce you to June Foster again. This book The Inn at Cranberry Cove won the Selah Award this year. I’m very happy for June.

Welcome back, June.  Since you’re being published regularly, what new avenues will your future books take? I love to write book series. My recent romantic suspense books, The Cranberry Cove series, has proven to be popular. I love reading series, myself. I recently finished Martha Rogers' The Homeward Journey, set in the 1800's. In 2022, I plan to write a three-book series of contemporary romance stories. So far, I haven't determined the setting, but I feel sure the characters I envision will tell me where they live.

What conferences will you be attending this year? Will you be a speaker at any of them? This last June, I wanted to go to the Blue Mountain Christian Writer's Conference in North Carolina since I knew my book, The Inn at Cranberry Cove, was up for an award. Unfortunately, my husband was in the hospital, and I couldn't go. Some of my Word Weaver friends kept me informed. I will be a speaker in August at my church talking about my writing journey and my Christian faith.

If you were in charge of planning the panel discussion at a writing conference, what topic would the panel cover, and who would you ask to be on the panel, and why? Great question. I've attended many ACFW conferences but have never run into this topic. “Painting Word Pictures.” By this I mean, I'd like to learn how to better manipulate and maneuver words to create an image in the reader's mind. Before becoming a writer, I taught elementary school. In teaching sentence construction and grammar, I simplified my instruction to a level an 8- or 9-year-old would understand. Sometimes, I think I'm stuck in that same mode. I'd like to see a panel discuss various literary devices and how to use them. Perhaps each panel member could talk about how the creative writing process works for them. The very first person I would ask is someone who doesn't write fiction but is head of a ministry called OneHome—Rob Hoskins. He is a master with words. His devotionals are inspiring. https://robhoskins.onehope.net/

How important is it to you to be active in writing organizations? Very important. I need the support that writers can give each other. Only other writers understand the unique challenges of creating characters, plotting a story, and the various conventions we follow. I attend a monthly writer's meeting in a nearby town, Word Weavers International. I hope to attend the ACFW conference when we meet once again in person.

Where in the community or your church do you volunteer? Mostly at my church. My husband and I are Sunday morning greeters, and we also help once a month in the church kitchen with the mid-week supper. Since I spend most of my time writing, my hubby volunteers more than I do.

I understand that. Who are the five people who have made the most impact on your life, and how? Jesus Christ would be number one. Becoming a Christian changed my life in every way. Jesus gave me a purpose and assured me I am valuable to Him. Besides the Savior, I'd say my pastor in El Paso, Texas, Fay Lamb for her patience in helping me learn to write, my husband for the great difference Jesus made in his life, and my two daughters for becoming my best friends.

If you could write the inscription on your tombstone, what would it be? A child of God, saved by His grace.

The Inn at Cranberry Cove: After her boss fires her on unfounded grounds, twenty-nine-year-old Ashton Price leaves Denver for Cranberry Cove, Washington. She's inherited her aunt's B and B and is determined to carry on her legacy. Upon preparing for guests, she learns of a century-old tale of treasure within the inn. Many have searched for the illusive gems but to no avail. She discovers a man working on the inn's grounds, but is he the gardener Gina Price hired? Perhaps he's searching for the hidden treasure.

James Atwood, corporate executive, works in the Atwood's thriving cranberry business. Tragedy strikes, and he's numb and riddled with guilt. Befriended by Gina Price, he finds solace working evening and weekends in the fresh earth, fescue grass, and aromatic blossoms of the inn's gardens, helping to divert his mind from his dishonest cousin Robert, bent on destroying the Atwood business. He continues tending the grounds after Gina passes, and the new owner believes he's a gardener. After she calls late one night upon hearing a prowler, James races to her rescue and discovers his feelings are more than protective.

Ashton's first guests, the Claxton's, appear out of nowhere saying they've had reservations for a year though she finds no record of a deposit. She chalks the failure up to faulty accounting before she arrived. When an elusive intruder continues to make frightening midnight visits, Ashton fears for her own safety and that of the Claxtons. But then, their odd comings and goings cause Ashton to wonder. Are they really vacationing visitors from California, or do they have other motives for staying at the inn?

Can two people allow the majestic northwest and fragrant coastal air heal their wounded hearts? Will they discover the secret of The Inn at Cranberry Cove?

Please share the first page with us.

Ashton Price took the keys offered by the executor of her aunt's will.

"As her attorney, I can tell you your aunt would be grateful if she knew you were perpetuating her life's dream. If only she could be here to witness the inn filled with visitors and bustling with activity once again."

Ashton sighed. She could barely believe that Aunt Gina would leave her entire life's work, her beautiful inn to Ashton's care. "After all she did for me…" Her memory meandered to the rebellious young Ashton of fifteen, and she cringed. "I've always wanted to be in business for myself."

He returned to the mahogany desk and handed her the box with Aunt Gina's jewelry. "She gave orders that I should present this to you upon her passing. She wanted me to advise you to put her valuables into safe keeping as soon as possible. She wanted me to expressly warn you that people have not forgotten the legend and to vet your visitors carefully. Some come looking for the treasure and snoop into places they shouldn't go."

Ashton smiled. Aunt Gina had often told her stories about the rumors. Early ancestors of the inn's previous owners had a cache of precious gems hidden in the home somewhere. She'd even allowed Ashton to search on her own. But Aunt Gina had assured her that it had only been a myth.

"I understand her reasoning, and that'll be the next order of business after I get settled." Ashton slipped the key in her purse and gripped the ornate wooden container. "I appreciate your work as her lawyer and hope I can depend on you as well."

"Of course. Gina always spoke of what a blessing you were to her."

"She changed my life. I'd probably be in prison today if it hadn't been for her."

Mr. Bradford stared at her. "What do you mean?"

"I'm surprised she didn't tell you. When I was a teen, my parents planned to send me to a girls' correctional ranch."

He frowned. "I can't imagine why."

"Let's just say I was a rebel and heading for a very unpleasant life until Aunt Gina stepped in. That's why I intend to keep her legacy."

Mr. Bradford smiled. "Well, in Gina's own words, you're an outstanding, college-educated young woman now." He looked at his watch. "My next client is waiting, but I wish you the best. I hope The Inn at Cranberry Cove prospers as it did when your aunt was alive."

Ashton shook the lawyer's hand. "I'm going to give it my best though no one can take Gina Price's place."

She walked out of the office, butterflies whirling in her stomach. Life in Cranberry Cove would be nothing like it had been in the big city of Denver. Operating the inn was a challenge she'd never faced before. Even more challenging than her accounting job she'd left six weeks ago. But carrying Aunt Gina's legacy meant everything to her. If she failed, her aunt's dream would be lost forever.

DREAMS DEFERRED - June Foster - One Free Book

Bio: June Foster is an award-winning author who began her writing career in an RV roaming around the USA with her husband, Joe. She brags about visiting a location before it becomes the setting in her next contemporary romance or romantic suspense. June's characters find themselves in precarious circumstances where only God can offer redemption and ultimately freedom. To date June has seen publication of 17 novels and 1 devotional.

Welcome back, June. As an author, I know it takes a lot of people to birth each book. Who were the people involved in the birthing of this book, and what were their contributions?
Wonderful question. I haven't seen one like this. First, my dear sister-in-law, Helen Lynch, was a great resource for information about the Catholic Church. Since I'm not a Catholic, I don't have as much knowledge as she. She read my first draft to make sure all the plot elements were correct concerning the church, and she patiently answered my many questions. My husband, who grew up Catholic, helped as much as he could. He's been out of the church for quite a few years, and we now attend a protestant church. Another person who was a great help was the principal at Sacred Heart Catholic School, housed in the church by the same name in Cullman, Alabama, our hometown. She gave us a tour of the school and answered tons of questions. I also looked around the church and took many pictures which were great references when I wrote my scenes set in the fictional church of St. Aloysius of San Antonio, Texas. Since the book is inspired by my great grandfather and great grandmother, I needed to discover more about the history of these two people. My daughter went on Ancestry.com and did additional research for me.

If you teach or speak. What’s coming up on your calendar?
So far I have not had to opportunity to teach or speak about writing other than in casual situations. I'm hoping for the chance one day soon.

If you had to completely start over in another place, where would you move, and why?
Interesting question as my husband and I are preparing for an extended road trip in our RV. We're hoping to head to the northeast to tour the New England states. As far as starting over, I expect my next and permanent location is going to be in eternity.

If you could only tell aspiring novelists one thing, what would it be?
Pray, pray, pray. Seek the Lord about what He'd like you to write and write it! If you're writing for fun or for your own enjoyment, it won't be nearly as exciting as the stories God puts on your heart.

You’ve been asked to be in charge of a celebrity cruise. Who would you ask to take part, and why? (AS in what program, singers, etc. [it doesn’t have to be writing related])
I'd check with Randy Alcorn, Jerry B. Jenkins, and Franklin Graham to offer inspirational classes. Then I'd ask Wayne Watson, J. Michael Finley, and Mercy Me to perform the entertainment. Then Emeril Lagasse and Glada De Laurentiis would be in charge of cuisine.

Sounds wonderful. I’d go. Tell us about the featured book.
Frances Matthew Hall is obedient to family tradition: all firstborn sons will serve as a priest. Now Matt officiates at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas. But when on Easter Sunday, he notices a beautiful young woman who takes his breath away. He must fight against his attraction to her or leave the priesthood and alienate his entire family.

Mary Louise Graham is a middle school teacher and devout catholic. Yet no amount of service to the community can ease the heavy load of guilt she carries. God can never forgive her unspeakable mistake. But when Father Matt tells her about a forgiving God through His son Jesus Christ, she's free. Only thing, the Godly priest now means more to her than he should.
Can two people find their way to each other amidst insurmountable obstacles? Dreams Deferred is inspired by the author's great grandfather and great grandmother's story.

Please give us the first page of the book.
"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will." Father Matthew Hall lifted his eyes to the crucifix above the altar. Jesus hanging on the cross—the symbol of his faith. "We praise You, we bless You, we adore You, we glorify You."

The words of adoration for the crucified Savior of the world slipped from his lips so naturally, he barely looked at the lectionary. He lifted his baritone voice, offering the mass in song, something he didn't usually do, but since today was Easter Sunday, he would. Easter,—the most significant date on the Christian calendar, was the perfect day to exalt God with the talent He'd given Matt.
He took a breath and opened his mouth again. "We give You thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King." If Matt sang a billion words at each mass, it wouldn't be sufficient to praise his Lord Jesus Christ, the mighty God Who'd created Heaven and Earth.

At the end of the gospel readings, Matt stepped to the podium and looked out at the parishioners. The homily he'd worked on last night would surely convey the joy of Christ's resurrection.

He scanned the congregation again. Some sat, eyes wide, as if soaking up every word of his twenty minute homily. In the back of the sanctuary, two women whispered to each other and another filed her nails.

THE LONG WAY HOME - June Foster - One Free Book

Welcome back, June. Why did you become an author?
In a word, because the Lord called me. Yes, I realize that sounds cliché, but I asked for confirmation. He gave me three undeniable indications, and I was convinced. Too, the desire was so strong, I knew that I couldn't not write.

If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?
I thought about this question for several minutes, and I could mention many. A tour guide in Israel, a makeup artist, a chef, a dog trainer. But the one that stood out is: I'd like to be a young mother again, this time knowing the Lord and living for Him.

Very good. If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?
I think I would like to have lived at the time of Christ—to experience the Holy Land as it was then, but with knowledge of the Savior. I would like to see Jesus as the first century Christians did.

What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?
My husband and I traveled for quite a few years in our RV. We saw much of the US with the exception of the northeast. I'd love to see the New England states in the fall and the national parks in that area.

How about a foreign country you hope to visit?
I'd love to visit Israel. Since I can't travel back in time to actually see Jesus, I'd like to see the area as it is today. To bask in the many spots described in the Bible—the Sea of Galilee, Jesus's birthplace, the Garden of Gethsemane.

What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?
We had an amazing revival at our church recently, and the Lord showed me I need to give over more and more of myself to Him. To love others as He loves us.

Tell us about the featured book.
David Maguire's tour of duty in Germany is over, and he's returning home to Oak Mountain, Alabama, in search of a job. After a long flight from Frankfort, he shares an Uber with Dallas resident Jada Atwood.

Jada Atwood, a registered nurse midwife, is on her way to a medical conference in Queens. If only she could live up to her father's legacy at the hospital where she works, she could prove worthy of his reputation. Marriage awaits yet her fiancé has yet to offer a ring.

When the Uber driver must make a stop to pick up a passenger at a Queens shopping center, two men who robbed a nearby bank commandeer the Ford as a getaway car. But when they discover two passengers, they have to get rid of the extra baggage.

After the kidnappers murder the Uber driver, David and Jada fear for their lives. Will they find their way home or die in a Pennsylvania forest?

Please give us the first page of the book.
Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you. Matthew 7:7

If David Maguire wouldn't look like an idiot, he'd kneel down and kiss the hot, well-traveled sidewalk outside the airport. Finally, he stood on U.S. soil. A new beginning awaited, and God willing, a new job after his interview next week. The thought thrilled him more than Christmas morning as a kid.

The silver Ford sedan described on the Uber app inched up behind a line of cars at passenger pickup. He stood on tiptoes and waved at the driver who neared the curb. Then David moved his thumbs over his cell's screen. Mom. Just landed. Can't wait to see you guys. Got a flight from JFK to Birmingham tomorrow.

The driver stopped and jumped out. "Lieutenant Maguire?" His accent hinted of Middle Eastern origins. "I'm Hadjira Khan, your driver." He whipped off his ball cap, wiped his brow, and plopped his hat on again. "Let me get this." The driver grabbed David's duffle bag and set it in the trunk next to a light pink suitcase.

"Appreciate it. I'm going to the Rockford Hotel in Queens."

"Yes, sir. I have two more passengers besides you."

"No problem." The cheaper fare suited David just fine. He couldn't be too extravagant since his army pay would end soon. He sure didn't want to sponge off of Mom and her new husband. "However I can get there is fine. I'm just glad to be home." He opened the door, tossed his backpack in, and sat.

A woman with long, dark hair and dressed in white jeans and a tight filmy blue blouse sat on the other side. She looked up, nodded, and then continued tapping her cell's screen.

David smiled then focused on his text when his phone dinged.

I can't wait to see you. Let me know what time to pick you up from the airport. Mom

Tomorrow at 3:13. See you then. Love you.

No matter how hard he tried to disguise his smile, the wide grin stretched his lips. He'd be in Oak Mountain soon.

The Uber driver pulled from the curb. "You two comfortable back there?"

"Yeah, sure." David took a deep breath and glanced toward the woman again. He tried to identify the aroma emanating from her. It wasn't likely Hadjira that smelled like roses.

"Yes, thanks." She peered at the driver then cast a quizzical look to David.

He gave her a weak smile and turned to face the front of the car, mentally kicking himself for staring too long.

Hadjira pulled off on a main thoroughfare and lifted his chin to glance into his rearview mirror. "We stop at a strip mall off 135th for one passenger. Then I take you to Rockford Hotel, sir, and you to Regal Gardens, ma'am."

"No problem," David mumbled, trying not to draw out the words into multiple syllables as his southern drawl tended to do, worse when he got nervous.

So the woman was staying at a hotel in Queens as well. He cleared away the hesitation that impeded his question. "Where you coming from?" Ugh. The most uninspired conversation starter

WHAT GOD KNEW - June Foster - One Free Book

Welcome back, June. How did you come up with the idea for this story?
What God Knew is book three in the Almond Tree Series. I've always wanted to write a mixed racial romance. At first, Dr. Michael Clark was to be a Chinese doctor, but with the recent racial unrest, I decided to make him African American. It seemed to fit the current issues we're facing here in the US. I must admit, I'm an issue writer. I love to delve into problems from a Christian worldview.

If you were planning a party with Christian authors of contemporary fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
I have tons of Christian writer friends and would love to invite all of them. But for just selfish reasons, there are some I'd love to have the opportunity to ask questions. How do you come up with your story ideas? How do you write such compelling stories? What's the key to your success? Among a jillion others. So, I'd have to say: Ted Dekker, Beverly Lewis, Jerry Jenkins, Karen Kingsbury, Randy Alcorn, and of course I'd love to invite Lena Nelson Dooley, though she writes mostly historical!

I do have several contemporary releases as well. Thank you for including me. I’d love to visit with those people, too. Now let’s do that for a party for Christian authors of historical fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
Well, I already said Lena Nelson Dooley, so I'll name some others for the same reason as above. To pick their brains. And maybe some of their creativity would rub off on me! (Ha) Janette Oke, Davis Bunn, Julie Pollitt, Mildred Colvin, Amanda Cabot, and Darlene Franklin.

A very good list, June. Many times, people (and other authors) think you have it made with so many books published. What is your most difficult problem with writing at this time in your career?
I write about subject matter that many other Christian authors don't address. That is in no way a criticism. I believe we all must write the stories the Lord places on our hearts. My themes are not readily accepted by publishers and agents and I have to fight rejection frequently. But in the end, I give it over to the Lord, do the best job I can on honing my craft, and pray, pray, pray.

Tell us about the featured book.
Let me share my backcover blurb for What God Knew.

Neonatal specialist Dr. Michael Clark is passionate about saving the lives of premature babies. But the pediatrics department at El Camino General can't provide the care many of his preemies require. Now he wants to build a specialty hospital where he can better offer medical treatment for his young patients.

Tammy Crawford is an accomplished geriatrics RN who wants nothing to do with her sister Joella's religious beliefs. She's independent and doesn't need anyone, including God in pursuing a new job as a nurse practitioner.

When she falls in love with the intriguing Michael Clark, she must reconsider her resolve to devote herself completely to her career and not become distracted by a romantic relationship. Now the obstacles are insurmountable. She's in love with a man from another culture and a different race.

Michael acknowledges his growing affection for the beautiful nurse yet can't ignore his brother's deep racial prejudices.

Can two people who are as different as night and day find a life together?

Please give us the first page of the book.
Michael straightened the name tag on his lab jacket identifying him as a neonatal team member at El Camino General and tapped on the hospital room door. He opened his mouth to announce his presence but snapped it shut. Dave Reyes, father of the preemie baby girl, bent over his wife's bed. Closed eyes and clasped hands relayed the message. The couple was praying.

Only one thing to do. Stand quietly inside the threshold and wait. Prayer. We needed more of that.

"And, Lord, we ask you to allow little Abby to develop and grow strong. We know You cherish this new life, and we offer her up to You. Even her name means Joy to the Father. Her mother and I pray that our daughter will bring You joy all the days of her life. In Jesus' Name."

Mrs. Reyes opened tear-filled eyes and whisked the moisture from her cheek.

"Good morning, Mr. and Mrs. Reyes." Michael stepped closer to the bed. "How are you today?" He trained his gaze on the pretty blonde still clutching the hand of her dark-haired husband.

"We're doing well, thank you. And please call us Betty Ann and Dave," Mrs. Reyes said.

Dave left his wife's side and walked toward Michael with an extended hand. "Thanks for coming in, Dr. Clark. We're both anxious to hear about our daughter."

Though Michael had treated cases of preemies who were born as early as twenty-six weeks, little Abby stood a better chance of survival at thirty-two weeks. "Your baby has indications of jaundice, but we're treating her with phototherapy. She'll be fed with a feeding tube for a while, but I'd encourage you to supply breast milk if you're planning to nurse her."

Betty Ann nodded. "Yes, I definitely want to provide her milk."

"Excellent. At present we're keeping her in an incubator. The good news is there are no signs of apnea and bradycardia. I anticipate you'll be able to take her home in about four weeks." Though Michael felt confident that this child would thrive, he never viewed any case as routine. Every child was unique, God's precious gift to parents.

"Thank you, Lord." Dave glanced at the ceiling and back to Michael.

"Dr. Clark, when will we be able to see her?" Betty Ann wiped another tear from her eye.

Michael smiled. "As soon as you feel up to making the trip to the NIC unit. I'm sure you'll be encouraged by our caring staff."

Betty Ann turned to Dave and squeezed his arm. "I'd like to go this afternoon."

Casting a loving glance at his wife, Dave patted her hand. "We'll go over there together." He looked up to Michael. "Doctor, we've placed our baby in God's hands, and we're praying for you and the entire staff in the NIC unit."

"That's the best thing you can do." Dave sounded like Michael's mother, telling others how prayer works. Since early childhood, he'd listened to her Bible stories and constant prayers.
Though, as a doctor, he trusted in science and modern medicine, Michael believed God's power transcended any healing a medical professional might offer. "Well, nice chatting with you both." He handed his card to Dave. "Here's my private cell number if you need to call me. Please feel free."

"Thank you, Doctor. We appreciate your availability and medical care for our baby girl." Dave cleared his throat, as if stifling an emotion.

ECHOES FROM THE PAST - June Foster - One Free Book

Welcome back, June. Tell us about your salvation experience.
I was raised in a family that went to church but never talked about Jesus, never read the Bible, and only prayed at mealtimes saying memorized prayers. We attended a liberal denomination and as a child, I don't remember ever hearing about salvation through Jesus Christ. So I headed off to college with a marginal moral compass, worldly goals, and little direction. Ten years later and the mother of two children, I still floundered in a confusing world, knowing my life was empty. Finally, our neighbors began taking my two girls to church. One Sunday, I decided if those two little girls could attend, so could I. I began to go to church at Ft. Lewis, Washington, Main Post chapel. Later, a secretary at my husband's work befriended me and asked me to go to a praise service at her church. Then, when we got home, she asked me if I wanted to ask Jesus into my life and I remember saying no, that I wasn't ready. A couple of months later, I watched an old movie And The Next Voice You Hear. Somehow the message touched my heart and for the first time in my life I realized God was real. I joined a Bible study and learned about Jesus and his offer of salvation. Finally, I prayed over the phone with one of my co-workers to ask Jesus into my heart. My life has never been the same. To follow up, both my daughters and my husband now know the Lord as well.

You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?
Mildred Colvin, because I love her sweet, historical romances and would like to spend time with her. Francine Rivers. I'd pick her brain about what it's like to be a successful Christian author. Frank Peretti. I'd ask him how his imaginative ideas form in his brain. Jerry Jenkins. I'd schedule him to talk about the techniques he uses in writing stories that grip a reader, not setting him/her free until they've finished the book.

Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.
I actually don't get to speak very often. I've given my testimony at church on Sunday morning, and many said they were truly blessed by it. I've been fortunate to appear on my local Birmingham television station and appear on blog radio from time to time.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?
Once I walked into the wrong restroom at Walmart. When I came out of the stall, I saw a man washing his hands. Fortunately he was just leaving, so I washed my hands and tiptoed out of there. As I walked out the door, I looked up and down the aisles to see if anyone noticed where I came from. I don't admit this very often.

I’ve also had an experience where I accidentally went into the wrong restroom. It is an uncomfortable situation, but I’m sure there are more people who have besides you and me. People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
First, a person must have a story to tell, one that insists on being told. If she is truly passionate about her story, learn the craft of writing and go for it. But most importantly ask: Is God nudging you to tell this story?

Tell us about the featured book.
Echoes From the Past is book 2 in the Almond Tree Series. The hero and the heroine in this story were supporting characters in Book 1 For All Eternity.

When Dave Reyes, senior pastor of New Life Fellowship discovers he has a six-year-old daughter, his life changes forever. He must reveal the truth to the congregation, but will they fire him and send him away in shame?

Social worker Betty Ann Johnston still grieves over the death of her police officer husband. But when he returns from the grave to torment her, she struggles to maintain her sanity. Witnessing Dave's faith is her only source of strength. Will ghosts from her past destroy her, or will she find hope in the God of the Bible?

Please give us the first page of the book.
Fatigue robbed Dave of the last ounce of energy. Though his stomach growled, he'd resort to the same menu as last night, some delectable dinner in a cardboard carton from the freezer—probably spaghetti and meatballs again. He plopped down on the couch under the picture window and released a long breath. In the cool April mornings, the shrub outside had already flowered with purple blossoms.

The spacious three-bedroom home the congregation provided was plenty comfortable, just too big for a bachelor. At the last elders' meeting, he didn't miss Mr. Crenshaw's implication, though cloaked in polite wording. Most pastors of a church the size of New Life had a wife and children.

Then the man's words had turned caustic. "Humph. If you want to know the truth, I question whether a twenty-nine-year-old single man can be equipped to effectively serve. How could you possibly understand parishioners who struggle with marriages or problems with children?" Mr. Crenshaw's language drilled into Dave like a dentist's tool. Thank the Lord the other elders seemed to ignore him and breezed right through the rest of the meeting.

Dave raised his hands in the air. He didn't have a woman in his life now and hadn't found the desire to go on the hunt for one. After that year in Los Angeles, God probably decided he couldn't be trusted with a relationship again, at least not anytime soon.

Sounds interesting. How can readers find you on the Internet?

RYAN'S FATHER - June Foster - One Free Book

Welcome back, June. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?
I've written about overcoming anger, obesity, low self esteem, the subtle deception of cults, and abortion. I believe my favorite theme is who we are in Christ. My characters are often weighed down by the pressures of life and frequently feel like giving up until they embrace the Word and God's power. In Ryan's Father, Ryan believes he's trapped in a lifestyle he hates. But he learns that the old Ryan died to sin and was buried with Christ and a new Ryan now lives. Only then is he able to escape his past.

What other books of yours are coming out soon?
I have three books for which I'm seeking publication. For All Eternity—a story of a young man steeped in a back-breaking cult, Red and the Wolf—a modern day rendition of Little Red Riding Hood, and Misty Hollow, a romance set in the Smoky Mountains. By May 2014, I pray one or all will see publication.

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?
This is such a difficult question because there're so many. But I suppose I'd have to say Jeanette Oke. I'm enchanted by her Love Comes Softly series. I'd love to ask how she felt the call to write, how story ideas come to her, how she gets to know her characters, and much more. Maybe in one evening, some of her talent would rub off on me. I'm joking, but I would like to know her thoughts about how God has used her.

I did get to meet her at one ACFW national conference, and I was in one picture with her. What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?
I'd have to say the apostle Paul. I would love to ask him how he penned all those books in the New Testament. How did it feel to be the hand of God writing His word down for future generations? Did he have any idea how modern history would evolve? How did he remain so humble? Well, now that I think of it, I might get the chance to talk with him one day.

How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?
I would tell them to continue to hone their craft. Read books on writing, join a critique group with experienced authors, and write, write, write.

Many published authors receive rejections as well. I certainly do. The publishing industry can be brutal. Learn what you can from each rejection. Then file that slip away in a drawer and keep on working. God has His own timing.

We've all been there. One multi-published author who's won a Carol award told me she received over a hundred rejections before her first novel was published. Don't take rejection personally. Keep on going.

Yes, we all get rejections. Tell us about the featured book.
Ryan's Father is my fifth book to be published. The story deals with a sensitive subject—more so than my other four novels. I don't know of any other fictional books out there which deal with homosexuality from a Christian worldview. I expect to receive criticism from those opposed to my point of view. But I'm not afraid to take a stand because the story encompasses the truths of God's word.  Here's a blurb.

Ryan Reid is a first-grade teacher and a Christian with a heart for neglected kids, but a chance encounter during an earthquake with Sandy Arrington, a beautiful young nurse, rocks Ryan’s carefully guarded world and unearths the secret he has held deep in his heart. Though Sandy falls in love with him, Ryan’s forbidden affections lie elsewhere, and he must depend on the Lord to see him through a battle he always hoped he’d never have to face.

Please give us the first page of the book.
For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin. Romans 6:6

The walls at Starbucks groaned and crunched. The cardboard cup of steaming coffee flew from Ryan's hand and spilled onto the tile. His body swayed as his foot slid out from under him on the undulating floor. He caught himself against a chair.

"What's happening?" A scream behind him split the air. "Help me."

He spun toward the woman's cries.

She tottered in the center of the room, eyes round and mouth wide. Her hands gripped her pale face.

Sympathy sifted through his own fear.

"Take cover, everybody," the barista yelled from the coffee bar. The strong smell of espresso filled the room.

"Quick. Under here." Ryan grabbed the panicked young woman's arm and pulled her beneath a wobbling table. "Hold on to one of the legs."

"Please don't let me die." The slender dark-haired woman's face contorted as she sobbed beside him on the floor.

Ryan's normal sense of calm abandoned him. Fear gripped his emotions. He sucked in a breath. Would they survive or be crushed by the walls caving in upon them?

Wow. Can’t wait to read the rest. How can readers find you on the Internet?

DELIVER US - June Foster - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, June. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
Lena, you're right. God has led me down some paths I never thought I'd travel. I've just completed The Way Home and praying the Lord will allow this story to see publication. I'm just in the process of beginning a new story now. It will take place in the Great Smoky Mountains and feature a romance between an illiterate hero and the school teacher/daughter of an intellectual university professor.

Tell us a little about your family.
I have a daughter in El Paso, Texas, and another in Seattle, Washington. Between these two busy ladies, I have ten grandchildren with a great-grand on the way. On my husband's side, he has two sons and six grandchildren with two greats. As you can tell we have a blended family and love everyone of these precious kids and grandkids. And greats.

We have one great grandson and another great on the way. Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
Yes, definitely. I never read romance until I began writing it. Now I read the wonderful romance stories of authors like Mildred Colvin, Gayle Gamer Martin, Sandi Rogg, Dina Sleiman, Fay Lamb, of course Lena Nelson Dooley, and so many more.

What are you working on right now?
A thought came to me the other day. What if an illiterate man fell in love with a school teacher? So my new novel was born. I don't have a name for the characters or the title of the book, yet, but the ideas are flowing. I have a great reference book, too, an autographed copy of The Teacher Who Couldn't Read. Years ago, I attended an educational conference and heard John Corcoran tell his story. He grew up without learning how to read. He was ashamed of his illiteracy and tried to hide it. In my story, the hero will overcome his lack of confidence in himself by God's grace. The heroine, who grew up in the academic world, will find out what's really important in life.

What outside interests do you have?
Not too many. Smile. I love going to church, having friends to dinner, and exercising. I enjoy attending the North Alabama ACFW group meetings. But most days, I'm pounding away on my computer.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
Good question. Five of my books are set in the Seattle area of Washington State. I know the area well since we lived there for 12 years and the Pacific Northwest makes a beautiful backdrop for any story. However, the influence of the area's computer industry lends itself to the story of my systems analyst hero in the first book and the other technologically  savvy characters in the entire Bellewood series. The Way Home is set in Chico, California. If you promise not to laugh, I'll tell you how that came about. I picked up a US map and that town jumped out of me. The Lord blessed me by allowing me to visit for a week to do research. My latest book will be set in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. My husband is actually the one who suggested that setting.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
Well, not counting Jesus, of course, I think I would love to spend an evening with Martin Luther. I'd ask him question after question about the actions he took that had a great effect on church history.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
I wished I'd known that I don't have to compare myself with other authors. I only need to answer to God and trust Him to accomplish His will with my books.

It takes many authors a long time to learn that valuable lesson. What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
I think the Lord is teaching me to trust. I've always been a planner, looking ahead to what's coming next. God is asking me to enjoy one day at a time and relax.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
1. Grow tough skin. When you get those critiques back covered with red marks, just love your crit partner who took time with your chapter.
2.When you're covering your walls with rejection letters, don't let it get you down. Just keep writing.
3. Put God in control of your writing career. He knows best.

Tell us about the featured book.
Deliver Us is book 3 in the Bellewood Series. Characters from book one, Give Us This Day, and book two, As We Forgive, make an appearance, but we meet a new hero and heroine in this book.

The young fraternity man who coaxed Jillian Coleman upstairs that night is only a blur in her memory. Now she lives with the unrelenting guilt that she aborted her baby. God might forgive her, but she can't forgive herself. As Bellewood's premier gynecologist, she hopes to open the Jeremiah House to offer teen girls an abortion alternative. Though the handsome and successful Dr. Jett Camp wants to marry Jillian, he believes her plan is a waste of her skills.

Riley Mathis spent ten years in jail for dealing drugs. Now as a Christian, he's trying to put his life back together. Working as a janitor at night, he attends college by day. When he meets Dr. Coleman, he recognizes her from the sapphire necklace she wore the night he stole something precious from her. When she confesses the choice she made to abort her baby, Riley can't tell her he's the father of her child.

Please give us the first page of the book.
"Yes, Mom, I miss you, too." Jillian Coleman hoisted her purse on her shoulder and grasped the little sack with the two baby gifts.

"When can you get back up to New York for a visit?"

Mom's tender voice sent a ripple of longing through Jillian—to see her parents. But not only that, to feel a part of a family again.

Family. She longed for one of her own—a husband and kids. With a gulp, she acknowledged the question demanding her attention. Would God allow it? "I can't afford to take time off from the hospital right now. I've got at least six patients who will deliver in the next couple of months, and they're counting on me." Jillian took a few steps toward the front door. "Maybe I can come home Christmas."

"Jillian, you know how much your father and I love you. We pray for you every day."

"I need your prayers. I love you both, too." Jillian repositioned her cell phone on her ear. "Mom, I need to go in a minute. I'm off to a double baby shower for two of my expectant mothers."

"Another one? Sweetie, you're the most caring obstetrician in the city of Bellewood. No wonder your patients always invite you."

"That's nice of you to say."

"Honey, do you ever wish..."

Wish for a baby of her own? She didn't have to read Mom's mind to know what she planned to say. "More than I want to admit." Jillian slumped against the wall in the entry. "I dream of holding my little boy or girl, wrapped in a pink or blue blanket, asleep in my arms. But, Mom, don't count on being a grandmother anytime soon, if ever. I don't think it's going to happen."

*****

Riley Mathis never thought he'd park in front of a church, much less attend a service inside. The red brick building with the towering steeple perched on top seemed like home now. Almost. The old Chevy sputtered when he turned off the engine.

The extra cars on a Saturday in the parking lot puzzled him. Maybe he had the wrong day. Was the pastor having a meeting? He should pull on around and disappear out the opposite entrance.
No. He had to mow the grass. Couldn't procrastinate another week. Anyway, the event didn't involve him, though he wouldn't mind getting acquainted with some folks besides Tim Garrett. Except they probably wouldn't want to know him. Not when they found out about his past—where he'd spent the last ten years. He'd do his work and leave.
