Find out more about Kim at http://www.kimvogelsawyer.com/.

Welcome back, Kim. How did this book come about?
A couple of years ago I stumbled upon an obscure online article about the mysterious disappearance of several children from one Arkansas county during the 1930s. This sent my writer brain down several pathways of possibility, and the story emerged from there.

Tell us about the books cover and what makes it unique.
This cover is very different from any of my others, which mostly largely feature the heroine. The soft image of a carefree child running through the grass invites the reader to turn the flap and see where shes off to.

Please explain and differentiate between whats fact and fiction in the book.
Although the story was based on a true event, all of the details surrounding it are straight from my imagination. There are some real-life cities used for locations (such as Las Vegas, Nevada), but the town of Cumpton, Arkansas, which plays heavily in story world, is completely fictitious. I am sure there are a few snippets of conversation between characters that happened at some point in time in my life since I have three daughters, but the story is predominantly made up.

How much research did you have to do for this book?
Quite a lot! I researched forensic science, vegan lifestyles, health issues commonly suffered by the elderly, and several cities so I could get the details right. I enjoy research, though, so it was kind of fun especially how cold case detectives solve mysteries.

What inspired and surprised you while you were writing the book?
Since I am a seat-of-the-pants writer and dont follow an outline or plot, I am often surprised by where the characters take me. I love this kind of writing because every day is an adventure.

I told the writing workshop students on Monday night that as a seat-of-the-pants writer if I plotted out each scene, Id be bored when tried to write the story. I had already completed it in the plotting. What do you hope the reader takes away from the story?
First of all, I hope the reader will see that its never too late to restore broken relationshipsboth with people and with God. I also hope it will help them take a look at their life and, if they are allowing a past event to negatively impact their present, will forgive themselves and let the regret go.

What is the next project youre working on?
Im in the research stage of a story set at the Atlanta Exposition in 1881.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Cumpton, Arkansas
Hazel Mae Blackwell

Hazel set a porcelain cup and saucer on the overturned apple crate in front of her little sister. Madam, would you like cream and sugar in your tea?

Maggie nodded, making her Shirley Temple curls bounce. Her hairwhat Daddy called flaxenshimmered under the noonday sun, almost as yellow as the roses painted on the cup.

Jealousy sparked in Hazels heart. Why couldnt she have inherited Mamas sunshiny-yellow hair and sky-blue eyes the way Maggie had instead of Daddys dirt-brown hair and eyes?

What do you say? Hazel asked the question as tartly as Mama.

Yes, pwease.

Pluh-ease, Hazel said.

Pwuh-ease.

Hazel sighed. Maggie was just-turned-three, as Daddy often reminded her when she got impatient with her sister. Sometimes she wished Mama hadnt waited so long after Hazel to have another baby. Wouldnt it be fine if almost seven years didnt stretch between them? Mama and Daddy were always telling her she was lucky to have a sister, and Hazel loved Maggie. Of course she did. But sometimes

Pwease, Hayzoo Mae?

She lifted the lid on the doll-sized sugar bowl and spooned out pretend sugar. Then she pretended to pour cream. No matter how much Hazel begged, Mama never let her waste real sugar and cream for her tea parties. She used the spoon to stir the air in Maggies cup. There you are.

Maggies apple cheeks dimpled with her smile. Fank you. She picked up the cup between her fingers and carried it to her rosy lips.

I hope it isnt too hot.

Maggie made noisy drinking sounds. Her blue eyes rounded and she pursed her lips. Ooooh, it is hot! I bun my tongue!

Hazel stifled a chuckle. Playing make-believe with her doll had never been this fun. Maybe she should have let Maggie use her special tea set before. But shed waited until her sister passed her third birthday, the same age Hazel had been when she received the set for Christmas from Memaw and Pappaw Blackwell. She hadnt trusted Maggies baby fingers not to break one of the fragile cups or plates.

She picked up her own cup and held it close to her mouth. Blow on it. She puffed breaths into her cup, smiling when Maggie imitated her.

With the sun warming their heads, they sipped and smiled at each other and helped their dollies eat pretend cookies from the serving plate centered on the crate. Hazels imagination painted their surroundings from a dusty yard to the fancy city restaurant shed seen in a magazine. With linen-draped tables instead of a handkerchief-covered crate. With ladies wearing silk instead of homespun. So easy to see in her imagination. She even pretended her hair was shiny yellow curls trailing down her back instead of wind-tossed, dirt-brown, pin-straight locks lopped at shoulder level.

She picked up the plate and offered it to Maggie. Would you like the last cookie?

Maggie reached out her pudgy hand.

SWEET SANCTUARY - Kim Vogel Sawyer - One Free Book on This Blog, Plus Much More

Welcome back, Kim. Since you’re being published regularly, what new avenues will your future books take?
Since I love writing historical novels, I will probably continue writing stand-alone historicals. However, I’m hoping to travel away from prairie settings exclusively and perhaps explore inter-related novels--stories that can stand alone but have connections between characters or setting.

What conferences will you be attending this year?
Will you be a speaker at any of them? I plan to attend the ACFW conference in Indianapolis. My writing schedule doesn’t allow for a lot of conference attendance, but I always look forward to connecting with fellow writers and friends in the publishing world at the ACFW gathering.

If you were in charge of planning the panel discussion at a writing conference, what topic would the panel cover, and who would you ask to be on the panel, and why?
I’d love to explore what makes a book resonate with a reader, and I would put authors in the audience and avid readers on the panel.

I’d love to attend that discussion. How important is it to you to be active in writing organizations?
Very important. Writing is a solitary activity, so connections with other writers can keep one grounded and sane. I have been so blessed by writers who helped me along in my writing journey, and I want to offer the same hand of assistance to those starting out. The best place to find aspiring writers in within writing organization.

Where in the community or your church do you volunteer?
I am very active in my home church. I participate in the music ministry—choir, bell choir, solos, etc., I help lead women’s fellowship, and I am a substitute teacher for adults. When I have time to spare, I love to participate in community theatre.

I was in the bell ringer choir for a couple of years. It’s interesting. Who are the five people who have made the most impact on your life, and how?
My mom and dad--they are such incredible representatives of Jesus and have both overcome so much. They inspire me.
My step-grandma who has gone on to her reward but lives forever in my heart as one who loved me unconditionally and believed in me wholeheartedly.
My 9th grade English teacher who convinced a shy, scared-of-her-shadow girl she had something of value to share.
My soul sister, Kathy who helped me heal from a mighty emotional wound and see myself as a person with ability again.

If you could write the inscription on your tombstone, what would it be?
I would love for it to read: She lived exuberantly. She loved without reserve. She made a positive difference.

Wonderful. Tell us about the featured book.
A Story of Hope and Love Set Against the Backdrop of World War II

Lydia Eldredge longs to provide sanctuary for her young son, Nicky. But a constant threat comes from Nicky's drug-addicted father, who wants the boy and seems willing to do whatever it takes to get him.

Dr. Micah Hatcher faithfully serves the immigrant population of Queens, New York. But under cover of darkness, he has a secret mission that challenges everything he thought he wanted out of life.

When Lydia and Micah's paths cross, they are suddenly wrapped up in each other's callings. Together, they seek a refuge of safety--for Nicky, for themselves, and for the needy people God puts into their lives. Amid turmoil and discord, can hope and love prevail?

Please share the first page with us.

QUEENS, NEW YORK JULY 1944
Micah Hatcher scanned the letter a second time, his pulse beating at twice its normal rhythm. A joke . . . This has to be a joke. Yet there was nothing funny about it.
Someone bumped him from behind, and he apologized, moving away from the rows of mail cubbies to lean against the opposite wall, where he wouldn’t block the foot traffic. Half the population of Queens seemed to be retrieving mail right now. He scratched his head, trying to understand why this letter had come to him.

He checked the signature. N. Allan Eldredge. Scowling, he pressed his memory. Eldredge . . . Eldredge . . . The name seemed familiar. Then he slapped his forehead, remembrance hitting like a wave.

Lydia Eldredge. The nurse from Schofield Station Hospital. The one who had left Oahu early because of a mysterious emergency. An emergency that was no longer a mystery, thanks to the letter.

Micah’s gaze dropped to the letter again. Yes, now he understood. Small wonder Lydia had been in such a hurry to get back to the States—halfway through her tour of duty, as he recalled. He released a huff of disgust. He knew Lydia had been rather . . . well, flighty . . . and somewhat self-centered. But despite Lydia’s faults, he would never have taken her for a liar. How could she make up such drivel about him? He didn’t have time for this kind of nonsense now—not with Jeremiah depending on his help.

Tucking his other mail into his jacket pocket, Micah left the crowded lobby and plunked down on a wrought-iron bench outside the post office. With the noonday sun heating his head, he flattened the letter against his pant leg and read it once more. Slowly. Concentrating on every word and searching for hidden meaning between the lines.

Dr. Hatcher, I am sure by now you feel certain that your responsibility has been fully avoided, and this letter has come as a surprise. It has taken me some time to locate you. But this is a matter of extreme importance. A child’s life has been impacted. As the child’s grandfather, I cannot allow him to grow up wondering why his father has chosen to abandon him.

Therefore I request that you honor your responsibility toward your child. He and his mother are living with me in Boston. I will allow you two weeks to contact me. If by the end of that time, you have not chosen to honor your duty to your son, I shall be forced to take legal action. I assure you I have the wealth and influence to see that you do not continue to neglect your responsibility. I encourage—no, I insist—that you come with all due haste to Boston to settle this matter in an honorable fashion.

N. Allan Eldredge

“My son?” Micah muttered, his frustration growing. He had no son—it was impossible! Why on earth would Lydia tell her parents he had fathered her child? He folded the letter and shoved it roughly back into its envelope.

CENTRAL PARK RENDEZVOUS - Dineen Miller, Kim Vogel Sawyer, Ronie Kendig, MaryLuTyndall - One Free Book

Readers, we are privileged to interview two of the authors of this novella collection today.

Welcome, Dineen. How did your story for the collection come about?
Ronie got the ball rolling and then we just kept throwing ideas back and forth by email. Before we knew it, we had this really cool setting, a common element that carried through the stories (the coin), and a premise about love never failing based upon 1 Cor 13. I love that the stories span four generations.

What are you reading right now?
Fiction: Yesterday’s Tomorrow by Catherine West. My novella is partly set during the Vietnam War and I wrote it in honor of my father. Cathy’s book is set during the same war. I just had to read it!

Nonfiction: Out Live Your Life by Max Lucado. Love his books. The man writes nonfiction like a polished fiction author. Love that!

What other books have you had published?
My first nonfiction, Winning Him Without Words: 10 Keys to Thriving in Your Spiritually Mismatched Marriage released from Regal in 2011. My debut novel, The Soul Saver, released from Barbour just this May. They compliment each other. I love that I had the opportunity to do something like this—write nonfiction and fiction books that dealt with the same issue of being spiritually mismatched.

What is the hardest thing about writing a part of a novella collection?
Making sure we had the carry over details and timelines in sync. That was a real challenge, especially for Ronie and I because our stories overlap. But it was so much fun! The challenge just made it that more enjoyable when we made it work and unearthed all this really cool detail to do with the characters. That’s the creative part of writing that I love most.

How did collaborating with this team impact you?
Blessed me tremendously! I’d never done anything like this and thought of myself as the newbie of the group. Ronie, Kim and MaryLu are all multi-published authors and at the time of contract, I’d just signed the contract for The Soul Saver and Winning Him was due to release in a few months. Talk about a crazy time! My mind was spinning with all this great stuff on the horizon.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
I keep a list of interesting names I hear or see in movies or people I come in contact with. My husband is a professional disc golf player and works in the tech industry. He’s always mentioning people with the most unusual names. So I started keeping a list and refer to it when I start a new story. Whatever clicks, I use!

What did you want the reader to take away from your story?
That blessings can be found even in the trials and losses in our lives. God is always working for our good (Romans 8:28). Always. He redeems everything we go through. I love that about Him.

Are you a member of American Christian Fiction Writers? If so, why?
Yes! What an amazing organization and group of people. I don’t think I would be published right now if it weren’t for this group. Correction—I know I wouldn’t be. I have learned so much and made so many wonderful connections through this group and have benefited hugely through the yearly conferences. They are the highlight of my year!

What is the best piece of advice you received as an author?
Don’t be in such a hurry. I wish I’d heeded it more, to be honest. That time spent on refining and growing your craft is so important. I wish I’d taken a year to do just that instead of trying to squeeze it in with all the rest of the stuff I was doing to get published.

Where can my readers find you on the Internet?
My website is at www.DineenMiller.com . I'm actually giving away an e-book, The Making of The Souls Saver, for signing up for my newsletter. It has all the stories behind the scenes, setting and character pictures, interviews and three new scenes with The Soul Saver crew. Lots of good stuff just for letting me send an occasional newsletter. J

And now we have Kim Vogel Sawyer.

How did your story for the collection come about?
I think this has probably been answered well enough by my fellow co-writers. :o)

What are you reading right now?
MaryLu Tyndalls, Viel of Pearls. Good story!

I loved that book by Marylu. What other books have you had published?
I’m so blessed to have three Heartsong titles, three women’s fiction titles with Barbour, another novella set (Montana Mistletoe with Lena Nelson Dooley, Lisa Harris, and Debby Mayne), four young adult titles with Zondervan, and eleven historical and one contemporary with Bethany House. Sometimes I shake my head in wonder at what all God has accomplished in the past six years!

I so enjoyed being a part of the Montana Mistletoe collection with you. And I’m excited about us planning to put that collection up as individual ebooks soon. What is the hardest thing about writing a part of a novella collection?
I think making sure all the stories agree with one another. Ours were so closely intermingled--the modern-day story weaving through the “steps back in time”--there were lots of margins for error. It required a lot of communication and compromise!

How did collaborating with this team impact you?
I felt as though I got to know each of these wonderful writers on a deeper level--a friendship level. Since writing can be such a solitary activity, I truly enjoyed the camaraderie we developed as we worked together.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
My characters were named for my mom, her siblings, and my maternal great-grandfather (although he was never nicknamed Bernie!). I reversed the birth order of my mother’s siblings, however, making her the oldest instead of the youngest. She liked that. :o)

What did you want the reader to take away from your story?
I hope the reader recognizes hard times aren’t meant to drive us away from God, but serve a purpose in binding us closer to Him. His arms are always open to offer comfort and strength...but we have to be willing to lean into His arms.

Are you a member of American Christian Fiction Writers? If so, why?
Yes, I am! I can’t imagine taking this writing journey without the support and prayers and friendships and knowledge I’ve gained through ACFW. I view the membership as an extension of my family--such a marvelous group to which to belong!

What is the best piece of advice you received as an author?
I’ll share two: “Write for the Audience of One,” from Angela Hunt; and “To be published takes both talent and perseverance,” from Deborah Raney.

Where can my readers find you on the Internet?

SONG OF MY HEART - Kim Vogel Sawyer - Free Book. Plus Facebook Party and More

I'm so happy to have me friend Kim with us. Welcome, Kim. Why did you become an author?
I’m not 100% sure this was a conscious decision. From my earliest memories, I loved books and writing stories. I believe the desire was planted in me from the moments of my conception and I just needed to follow the course God set for me. Now, why I became an inspirational author is easier to answer. :o) As a Christian, God is woven into the fiber of my life. I wanted to write stories where He could be a main character, so writing Christian fiction is a perfect fit for me.

If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?
I spent a lot of years with children as a teacher before God opened the door to publication and I loved it. If for some reason I wasn’t able to continue as a writer, I’d gladly teach again.

If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?
If I could go back in time, I would go to the early 1900s. I’d love to have the chance to get acquainted with my grandmothers, who both died when my parents were children. I suppose I’ll have to wait until I get to Heaven to meet them--I’m pretty sure they’ll be part of my welcome-home committee.

What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?
I’d love to visit the New England states. I was able to zing through them once, but that brief glimpse inspired a longing to enjoy a lengthy stay. Someday...

How about a foreign country you hope to visit?
There are two foreign countries I’d like to visit: Russia, because it’s where my family originated; and Australia, because I love the way the people talk!

Australia is one of my dreams, too. What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?
Oh, wow, just one? Seems He’s always teaching me something of importance. LOL The last few weeks have tried my trust in various ways, and it’s given me an opportunity to “lean not on my own understanding.” Although it’s hard to keep walking forward when you don’t know where the path is leading, it’s a great exercise in depending on Him to guide your steps.

Tell us about the featured book.
I’m particularly fond of Song of My Heart. It was inspired on an antiquing trip to a tiny Kansas town called Paxico. My soul sister and I wandered into a century-plus-old former mercantile, where a hand-printed sign stated, “More antiques downstairs.” So down we went, into this smelly, dirt-walled cellar. After moving through a narrow hallway, we entered a room that sent story-chills from my scalp to my toes--a large, wood-paneled room with a tin ceiling and an oak stage set off my pillars at one end. Theatre seats sat in rows. Immediately questions crowded my mind: What kind of program took place in this under-ground theatre? Why would they choose to have the performance down here? By the time we loaded in my vehicle for the return trip, the characters were already stepping from the shadows to share their part of the story of a young woman who dreams of becoming an opera house singer...and the lengths to which she’ll go to provide for her family.

Please give us the first page of the book.
DALTON, INDIANA
MID-MAY, 1894
Sadie Wagner let out a squeal of delight. A tufted titmouse shot from the budding brush nearby with an indignant flutter of gray-feathered wings. On an ordinary afternoon, Sadie would regret frightening away a bird that offered such an enchanting melody, but today she was too excited to pause for regret. Gathering her tattered calico skirts in one hand, she clutched the letter from her cousin Sid in the other and dashed for the house.

Bursting through the door, left open to allow in the sweet breath of spring, she cried, “Mama! Mama!”

Her younger sister, Effie, turned from the dry sink, a dripping cloth in her hand. Her brown eyes widened in concern. “What is it, Sadie?”

Sadie waved the letter. “Good news! Come!” Catching Effie’s wet hand, she tugged her sister through the doorway to Mama and Papa’s small bedroom. Their feet beat a staccato rhythm on the pine floorboards, matching the rapid tempo of Sadie’s pulse. She released Effie and fell on her knees beside Papa’s bed. As always, the sight of his drawn, pain-riddled face raised an ache in the center of her chest. But surely the opportunity presented in the letter would ease some of Papa’s burden.

Mama, seated on a chair beside Papa’s bed with a half-empty bowl of potato-and-onion soup in her hands, sent Sadie a troubled look. The lines of worry etched into Mama’s brow had aged her. She set the bowl aside and touched Sadie’s heaving shoulder. “Goodness, child, why are you in such a dither?”

A gleeful giggle spilled from Sadie’s throat. She held out the letter, showing it to both of her parents. “Look! From Sid. Remember he promised to write once he got settled in Kansas? He’s there now . . . all settled in . . . and—” She paused to catch her breath. The dash across the yard had winded her more than she’d realized.

Effie danced in place, wringing her hands. “What does he say, Sadie?”

“He says there is a job for me in Goldtree!”

A HOPEFUL HEART - Kim Vogel Sawyer - Free Book

Welcome back, Kim. I've been hearing lots of good things about the new book. How did you come up with the idea for this story?

In August of 2008, my parents, husband, and I went on an Alaska cruise to celebrate my folks' 50th anniversary. While on the cruise ship, we met a woman who, upon learning we were from Kansas, said she'd spent a summer in Kansas at a herdsman school. She'd married a rancher, but he didn't have time to teach her ranching skills, so he sent her to herdsman school. I'd never heard of such a thing as a herdsman school, so the brief exchange stayed with me. Weeks later, I shared this tidbit with a group of writers, and one of them laughingly said it would be fun to use that premise in a mail-order brides type story--bring inept women from the east to learn ranching skills and then match them with western men. I love the idea!

You know I love mail-order bride stories. If you were planning a party with Christian authors of contemporary fiction, what six people would you invite and why?

Hm, I mostly read historical, but there are a handful of contemporary writers I admire for various reasons. I would invite Deborah Raney, Deborah Vogts, Brandilyn Collins, and Amy Wallace because they're women I enjoy spending time with but don't get the privilege often enough; and I would invite Angela Hunt and Jamie Langston Turner because their writing blows me away and I'd love to learn from them.

Now let’s do that for a party for Christian authors of historical fiction, what six people would you invite and why?

Oh, wow, limiting the guest list to 6 would be really tough... But I suppose I'd say Tracie Peterson so I could pick her brain--she's amazing brainstorming partner; Judy Miller--not only is she a great idea-generator; but she's downright funny, Miralee Ferrell--I love her giving heart and always enjoy time in her presence; Tamera Alexander--she's one of the sweetest ladies I know and she makes me smile; Lynn Austin--I'd like some of her amazing writing ability to rub off on me; and Lauraine Snelling, because I don't know her nearly as well as I'd like to.

Many times, people (and other authors) think you have it made with so many books published. What is your most difficult problem with writing at this time in your career?

I am so blessed right now to be writing for two different markets--adult historical and young adult contemporary Mennonite-themed fiction. I love both, and I hope to be able to continue with both, but it is a real challenge to bounce from a modern day high school to an Athabascan Indian village in 1898 without getting whiplash!

Tell us about the featured book.

A Hopeful Heart tells the story of a young woman convinced she can have only a second-best life. But overcoming the challenges of a new faith and the hardships of life on the frontier may just prove that, for her, the very best is yet to come. The publisher's description follows:
Can she turn her second-best chance into a golden opportunity?

Dowryless and desperate, Tressa Neill applies to the inaugural class of Wyatt Herdsman School in Barnett, Kansas. The school's one-of-a-kind program teaches young women from the East the skills needed to become a rancher--or the wife of one. But will Tressa have what it takes to survive Hattie Wyatt's hands-on instruction in skills such as milking a cow, branding a calf, and cooking up a mess of grub for hungry ranch hands?

Abel Samms wants nothing to do with the passel of potential brides his neighbor brought to town. He was smitten with an eastern girl once--and he got his heart broken. But there's something about quiet Tressa and her bumbling ways that makes him take notice. When trouble strikes, will Abel risk his life--and his heart--to help this eastern girl?

Please give us the first page of the book.

The computer where I had the final edited draft saved crashed, and I don't have this. *sigh*

The story sounds intriguing anyway. How can readers find you on the Internet?

Author Kim Vogel Sawyer - A PROMISE FOR SPRING - Free Book

Kim Vogel Sawyer has become a very popular author. I'm proud to call her a friend. Welcome back to my blog, Kim. Why did you become an author?

I’m not sure I chose “authoring” as much as it chose me. :o) I seemed to have been born with the bent to write. I submitted my first manuscript at the tender age of 11 (to Grossett & Dunlap in New York), and the dream of writing always lingered in the back of my heart. Being a full-time author truly is a life-long dream fulfilled.

If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?

Well, I was an elementary schoolteacher prior to writing full-time, and I would cheerfully return to that occupation. I still miss the kids… *sigh*

Yes, we often have to choose between two good things, don't we? If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?

I believe I would enjoy visiting the Depression era. I didn’t have the privilege of grandmothers while growing up because my grandmas both died when my parents were children. If I returned to the 1920-1930’s, I might have the chance to meet my grandmothers. That would be pretty neat.

What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?

Does it count if I zinged through it? I recently had the opportunity to flit through the New England states. I got just enough of a taste to want more. I’d love to return there and explore at my leisure.

They are beautiful, aren't they? How about a foreign country you hope to visit?

I definitely want to visit Germany and Russia someday. My family history is steeped in those countries, and I dream of taking my parents on a lengthy vacation.

I have German ancestry on my mother's side. What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?

“Praise Me anyway.” Sometimes, when things are rough, it’s hard to lift your voice in praise. But God inhabits praise, so when I turn my eyes from life’s hardship and look at who He is to me—remember who I am to Him—suddenly my heart lifts and burdens are more bearable. After all, I’m not facing any trial alone. So I’ve been choosing to praise Him in the midst of the storm. Makes a huge difference.

I remember when my husband and I had to learn that lesson. One of the most valuable. Tell us about the featured book.

A Promise for Spring is probably the strongest “romance” I’ve written thus far. It features two English immigrants, separated when the man came to America to establish a sheep ranch in Northwest Kansas. Geoffrey Garrett hadn’t intended to wait more than a year to send for his betrothed, but things proved more challenging than he envisioned, and five years slipped by. In the meantime, the flame of Emmaline’s youthful love flickered and died. She is appalled by the primitive conditions on the sheep ranch, and she desires to return to England immediately. Geoffrey extends a promise: If she will stay until Spring and give him a chance to recapture her heart, at that time he will let her choose to either remain in Kansas with him as his bride or return to England. So the question becomes will she stay, or won’t she?

Sounds intriguing. I can hardly wait until my copy comes. How can readers find you on the Internet?

Author Kim Vogel Sawyer - WHERE THE HEART LEADS. - Free Book

Kim, I'm very happy to welcome you back to my blog with your newest release.

Why did you become an author?

I became an author because God planted the desire in my heart (it has been a part of me from my earliest memories), and He clearly opened the doors to make writing possible. I love the opportunity to write stories that present the hope we can possess when we place our lives in God’s hands. I am very blessed.

If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?

Before writing full-time, I was an elementary school teacher. I love what I’m doing now, but I miss the kids tremendously. I’d really enjoy working with kids again.

If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?

I would like to have been around at the time the prairies were being tamed into cities. All of the changes that took place would have been fascinating. I’m also very curious what the landscape looked like before buildings and roads and telephone poles sprang up everywhere.

I'm withyou on that. What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?

I have always wanted to visit the New England states. There is such a rich history there (as a former history teacher, it intrigues me), plus I’ve never seen the Atlantic Ocean. I would love to take a short cruise and go whale watching.

The closest I've been to the Atlantic coast is Washington, DC. How about a foreign country you hope to visit?

Someday I WILL go to Germany and Russia. I want to visit the places of my ancestry—especially the Molotschna area in Russia, which is where my family lived prior to coming to America. That is on my “list of things to do before I die.” :o)

My family was from Norway and Sweden. I'd like to go there, too. What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?

He is there, and He is enough. It really is an on-going lesson, but it has been reiterated recently in the midst of personal conflict. God gives strength and grace, peace and comfort when it makes no rational sense that you can feel comforted and at peace. I’m so glad He keeps His promise to never leave us or forsake us.

Kim. tell us about the featured book.

Where the Heard Leads is the sequel to my first Bethany House historical title, Waiting for Summer’s Return, which released in June of 2006, so it has been a little while in between! I had great fun revisiting the characters of Gaeddert, Kansas, and getting a peek into their lives ten years after the first book ended.

Where the Heart Leads features a grown-up Thomas Ollenburger, who has accomplished his father’s dream for him: earning a college diploma. The only question is…what should he do with this hard-won education? Open doors invite his entrance, and he finds himself caught up in a campaign for a presidential candidate with some questionable values. The root of Thomas’s faith is threatened as he seeks his footing in adult life. Two women—one from Gaeddert (readers of the first book might remember snippy little Belinda Schmidt) and one from Boston—create further conflict for Thomas as he wonders to whom he should give his heart.

I hope readers will enjoy the chance to return to Gaeddert and reconnect with Peter, Summer, and Thomas in Where the Heart Leads.

Author Kim Vogel Sawyer - My Heart Remembers - Free Book

I'm very pleased to welcome Kim Vogel Sawyer back to my blog. I just finished reading the featured book My Heart Remembers, and you won't want to miss it. It's truly well-written. If you want to read my review of it, go to www.shoutlife.com/lenanelsondooley It's my latest blog on Shoutlife.

Welcome, Kim. Tell us about your salvation experience.

I had the privilege of being raised in a Christian home, so the realization of my need of a Savior came early. When I was eight years old, I invited Jesus to enter my heart. Four years later, a bit more mature and in better understanding of what it meant to live a Christian life, I rededicated my life to Jesus. He has been my constant companion, ever-present help, and bringer of peace for many, many years. I can’t imagine living without Him.

I know what you mean, having accepted Him into my heart as a seven year old, then later really understanding what it means to make Him Lord of my life. How did you and your husband meet?

Don and I met in January of 1983 on a blind date, set up by his aunt who was one of my coworkers. So now we blame Aunt Linda for everything. lol

This is too funny. James and I were a blind date also. You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?

Oh, wow, this is too hard! I can think of some I’d choose for the sweet fellowship—so many of my writing friends are “on-line” rather than “face-to-face” friends, so the opportunity to get together would be wonderful. Others I would choose because I admire their writing so much and would love to sit at their feet and learn from them. And then there are those who are new in the craft, floundering to find their footing, and I’d love to give them a boost and help them along. So…I don’t know what to say!

I know you have a singing and speaking ministry. Tell us about that.

I’ve had to put the singing part on hold for a while—waiting for a throat ulcer to heal. God actually called me to speaking ministry back in 2002. I really fought it—I don’t like being in front of people, and I didn’t feel as though I had anything worthwhile to say. But after literally months of battle, I finally gave in and said, “Okay, Lord, I’ll do it, but you’ll have to give me the words to say.” In 2004, He reached down through a prayer warrior named Brandilyn and brought emotional and physical healing into my life—in other words, He gave me a testimony worthy of sharing. So now I share it, and He receives the glory.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?

I would have to say my most embarrassing moment was at the Crown Uptown Dinner Theatre in Wichita, Kansas. The theatre is fairly dark, my husband was wearing a dark blue blazer, and I mistakenly slipped my hand through the elbow of a dark blue blazer and snuggled in…only to realize that blazer was not being worn by my husband. When I realized I was cuddling up to a stranger, I’m pretty sure I turned red enough to light the place. I excused myself and fled. My husband thought it was pretty funny; I did not.

People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?

If that’s your passion, do it! I don’t believe I’ve ever heard someone say they regretted writing a book, but there have been plenty who’ve regretted they didn’t. So get the words down! You’ll be glad you did.

Tell us about the featured book.

When their parents are killed in a tenement fire, the Gallagher children—Maelle, Mattie, and baby Molly—are sent on an orphan train to Severy, Missouri. Although Maelle tries desperately to keep her brother and sister together, they are taken by three different families. Maelle slips a keepsake into the packs of Mattie and Molly with the promise that she will find them again one day and will know them by their tie to home. Eighteen years later, Maelle is still searching…

Author Kim Vogel Sawyer - Free Book

I'm extremely pleased to once again welcome my good friend, Kim Sawyer. I hope you've already found her wonderful books. If not, you'll want to now. We're introducing her book Blessings, which just released.

Welcome, Kim, What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?

The spiritual threads in my stories always tend to be a natural outgrowth of the character’s development rather than “planned.” However, each of my stories carries a similar theme of hope—there is HOPE when we trust God and lean not unto our own understanding.

And you show that so well in all your books. What other books of yours are coming out soon?

In March, My Heart Remembers, a historical novel from Bethany House will release. I am very excited about this story—it features three orphan train siblings attempting to reunite in adulthood. Since my beloved step-grandmother was an orphan train rider, this story is especially dear to me. And it is my tenth book, releasing on the third anniversary of my first contract signing! The past three years have been absolutely amazing…and my heart remembers every blessing.

How exciting! If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?

I would choose to spend some time with President Bush to offer him encouragement. His term has been one turmoil after another, yet he has maintained his integrity and values. I admire that. As a former educator, I would also like to talk education with him.

He and his wife Laura would be part of my dream evening, too. How long have you known that you wanted to be novelist?

Forever. I realize that sounds silly, but truthfully, I can’t ever remember a time I didn’t want to be a writer. I believe God planted that desire in my heart. Then, in His timing, He watered the seed and brought it to fruit. I am in the center of His will, and it’s a marvelous place to be.

I understand that. What can you tell authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?

First I would ask this question: Do you believe writing for publication is something God desires for you? If the answer is yes, then consider this: There are no wasted steps on a God-designed journey. If you’re walking the pathway God planned for you, then every step has a purpose…even the rejections. So be disappointed—that’s a natural reaction—but don’t let disappointment become defeat or disaster. Trust that God has His timing, that He will use the rejections for your good and His glory, then continue to walk where He leads.

Kim, tell us about the featured book.

Blessings is Book 3 of the Sommerfeld Trilogy, a series of stories set in a fictional Old Order Mennonite community in Kansas. This book features the niece of the first book’s hero. Trina Muller has dreams that exceed the boundaries established by her religious sect. Giving them up means certain heartbreak, but following them means separation from her family, her beau Graham, and her fellowship. Is her dream worth the pain that it will cause…even if it is God’s will for her life?
