RACE AGAINST TIME - Kim and Kayla Woodhouse - Free Book

Welcome back, Kim and Kayla. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
First and foremost to glorify God through story. Our purpose statement is: “To challenge the believer in his/her walk with the Lord and to point the non-believer to God.”

And – we love a good story – especially suspense J

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
Kim: I would have to say the day I married my hubby – 20 years ago this month (Can I really be that old?) after that would be the birth of my two amazing kids J

Kayla: Getting to go to David Phelps’s home and attending a concert – that’s a tie with the day Montel Williams brought him (David) as a surprise to meet me on TV and we got to hang out in New York City all day. He and his family are so precious to us, God has blessed us getting to know them. And he’s my most-favoritest singer ever and always will be. J

How has being published changed your life?
Kim: It’s added just a tad bit of craziness to my already crazy life. So… it’s normal. J And so much fun.

Kayla: It’s added a crazy twist to our schedule (I’m only fourteen!) but I know that God has called me to it and I love it.

What are you reading right now?

Kim: Smitten by Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck, Diann Hunt, and Denise Hunter

Kayla: Veiled Rose by Anne Elisabeth Stengl

What is your current work in progress?
Kim: I just turned in another non-fiction devotional (today!) and am working on Untraceable (a romantic suspense) and Deadly Secrets (another suspense with Kayla)
Kayla: Deadly Secrets (With Mama) and a few other projects on my own that I’m pursuing (I love fantasy)

What would be your dream vacation?
Kim: Anywhere that is cool enough for Kayla to be and we are together as a family J

Kayla: I would like to go to Europe and the Faroe Islands J

How do you choose your settings for each book?
Kim: I think our characters really determine the setting – where they would live, what jobs they would have, etc.
Kayla: Yeah, pretty much. J But I also like to write fantasy – and enjoy creating new worlds.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
Kim: My hubby. Because I love him J (Okay – so I get to spend lots of evenings with him. But he’s my top choice.)

Kayla: Mrs. Tracie and Mr. Jim Peterson – because I love them and because I feel closer to God when we’re together.

Yeah, Kayla. I like hanging out with them, too. What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
Kim: Scrapbooking, photography, quilting, sewing, beading…

Kayla: painting, swimming, playing piano, scrapbooking, hanging out with my family.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
Kayla: Getting so into my character’s head that their feelings begin to overwhelm me. I overcome it by spending more time with God and prayer.

Kim: Seriously? Time and balance. I’m a wife, mom, and homeschool mom, and have an extremely busy speaking/tour schedule. I keep thinking I’ll get it all together, but I’m still working on it. I keep giving it to the Lord and I’m getting better and better every day at saying, “No.” J

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Write. Write. Write. Write. Write. Write. Work on your craft. Write. Write. Write. Write. Write. J

Tell us about the featured book.
Race Against Time is set in Alaska and features mother and daughter – Anesia and Zoya Naltsiine (Nal-chee-nah) – champion sprint dog racers. It’s a fast-paced, military-romantic-suspense-thriller we’ve been told J Here’s the blurb from Amazon:
Anesia Naltsiine has made mistakes that have cost her-and her 13-year old daughter, Zoya-dearly. But no more. She will prove her worth as a mother and as a breeder of champion sprint racing dogs. The word lose didn’t exist in Anesia Naltsiine’s vocabulary.

Liquid sloshed over the rim of Thunder’s bowl and, in seconds, turned to ice. Anesia leaned down to her prized racing dog and checked his paws, then broke a piece of frozen water off the edge.

How appropriate. The chill in the air matched the one in her heart. For thirteen years she’d raised her daughter, Zoya. For thirteen years she’d raced her heart out over the snow and built her kennel up to the prestige it held today. For thirteen years . . .

She’d been alone.

Her braid whipped against her face as she shook her head. Cut it out. World Championships were tomorrow. And she’d keep her thoughts on that if it killed her.

NO SAFE HAVEN - Kim and Kayla Woodhouse - Free Book

I was privileged to spend four days last week at a writers' retreat in south Texas with Kim and Kayla. I love them. You will, too. Welcome, Kim and Kayla. I know that this is a collaboration. How did this story come about?

Kim: Our brilliant editor, Karen Ball, actually suggested that we write together. She also thought that for the first book it would be unique to have a mother/daughter heroine team – with Kayla’s character having the same nerve disorder that Kayla has. It all happened at a rapid pace: Karen asked for a proposal within a few days and we had to crank it out. But the result was amazing :-) and No Safe Haven was born.

Did you find it easy to work together on it?

Kayla: It took a little figuring out (and mucho chocolate!), but we finally got a system down so we both knew what the other was writing so everything made sense in the story. After writing about half of the book things got tremendously easier—and from then on it was just pure fun! :-)
Kim: Definitely. Kayla and I have an amazing relationship so it was so much fun, but it did take some good organization to figure out how to do it!

How did collaborating with this team impact you?

Kim: Kayla has always amazed me with her writing, but during this project there were many times I’d read her scenes and say, “Wow.” Her writing is so fresh and real, I kept wondering if maybe I should quit and just let her write everything. :-)

What is the hardest thing about writing as a team?

Kayla: Umm… I think the hardest thing is probably knowing the other’s characters. When writing as a “team” you have to make sure that such and such a character would say something the way she/he would in the other person’s scene, and act the same way. Also, you don’t want them to do TOO much of something. For instance, one time we were writing and had a character do a quirk ten times in two scenes. Our editor had fun pointing out our “pet phrases.” Consistency is so important, so we had to make sure we were really in our characters’ heads – especially in the same way the other person had the characters in their head. (Whew. If you followed that train of thought, I’m impressed.)

I've read both of those books, and they're awesome, too. How did you choose your characters’ names?

Kim and Kayla: Andie was named after one of our friends from our writer’s group, Anesia was named after a girl we knew on Akutan (the island we lived on in Alaska), and a few characters were picked from our friends (i.e. Tammy the nurse is named after one of our dear friends- also a nurse-again from Alaska), and the others (Cole, Jenna, Zoya) we researched and to find just the right names. Race Against Time (book 2) and book 3 have a few more Athabaskan names in them as well, since several of our characters are Native Alaskan.

Would you want to work on another book together?

Kayla: YES! We look forward to the next two in this series as well as our next series. :-) We’ve loved the journey and I don’t think we’ll ever stop writing together, although we are doing things separately along with our books together.

Kim: Most definitely! This has been an incredible experience for us both and I love learning and growing together.

What do you want to tell us about the book?

No Safe Haven is really unique in several facets. Kayla is a very young full-length published novelist and she writes characters that are her age. NSH also tackled Hereditary Sensory Autonomic Neuropathy which is a rare disorder that Kayla has. We wrote a mother/daughter book by a mother/daughter author team. It was amazing to see that translate to the page. I (Kim) wrote all the adult POVs and Kayla wrote all the pre-teen/teen POVs. I wrote in third person, Kayla wrote in first. The response has been amazing so far and we are looking forward to hearing what you think. Christian Retailing Magazine just chose it as their top pick and Romantic Times gave it 4 stars and a wonderful review. We’re just excited to see what the Lord does with it!

I was thrilled when I got home from the retreat and read my Christian Retailing Magazine and saw the up pick. Where can our readers find you on the Internet?
