THE SECRETS BENEATH - Kimberley Woodhouse - One Free Boook

Bio: Kimberly Woodhouse is an award-winning, bestselling author of more than 30 fiction and nonfiction books. Kim and her incredible husband of 30-plus years live in the Poconos, where they play golf together, spend time with their kids and grandbaby, and research all the history around them.

She brings a lesser-known period of history to life with The Secrets Beneath, book one in the Treasures of the Earth series. Amid a fierce battle over the paleontology discoveries in the late 1800s, a young woman must stand strong against all that God puts in her path, including her former love.

About the story: Working alongside her father, Anna Lakeman chronicles their expeditions in paleontology with her sketches of each dig. They’ve been on the outskirts of a burgeoning feud known as the Bone Wars, but a discovery of dinosaur bones near their Wyoming home throws them into the middle of the battle. While dealing with the back and forth of those spearheading the war, Anna’s life crashes to a halt when her father becomes ill. To make matters worse, her old beau arrives back in town for the summer.

Medical student Joshua Ziegler left his hometown to forget the one woman he truly loved and deeply hurtAnna Lakeman. But when he returns, he realizes he never left behind his love for her. As Joshua and Anna struggle to come to terms with their relationship, Joshua’s nephew goes missing. Not only is Joshua desperate to find his lost nephew, he is thrown back into memories of losing his sister the same way.

Meanwhile, Anna’s work is at risk and long-kept secrets are coming to light. Amidst the strife, Joshua and Anna are finding it increasingly difficult to deny their feelings. Can they make it through to the other side—or should the past stay buried?

The Secrets Beneath is the first book in the Treasures of the Earth series. What inspired the idea behind your series? I had several different ideas for upcoming series I wanted to write, but I put it out to my readers on Facebook and Instagram, asking about what they would like to see in historical fiction. One of my friends brought up the Bone Wars, and I instantly knew that was what I wanted to write next.

What do you hope readers will gain from reading The Secrets Beneath? I always pray that the readers are able to see grace and forgiveness in every story. This one is ramped up quite a bit – not only for the hero and heroine, but for another major character.

Why did you choose to set The Secrets Beneath in the late 1800’s and feature the Bone Wars? Like I mentioned above, it was a great idea suggested on my author page. Once I started doing the research, I was sucked into the era. And then! I was able to speak with Earl Douglass’s granddaughter. Earl is the man behind Dinosaur National Monument! I’m so excited to have so much information—journals and such—from this amazing man to be able to use in the series.

What type of research was required to accurately write about your female protagonist, Anna Lakeman’s, role in paleontology and her experiences with the Bone Wars? I spent almost two weeks out in the field doing research in addition to all the reading and investigating that I did. Meeting a female paleontologist (Dr. Sue Ann Bilbey) was a highlight of the trip. She is such an amazing person with a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Medical student Joshua Ziegler is returning to Wyoming. What is his connection to Anna Lakeman? They have known one another since childhood. His sister was Anna’s best friend. He and Anna were very much in love before he left for medical school, but a horrible argument drove them apart.

How many books will be in the Treasures of the Earth series? There will be three books in the series. The second, Set in Stone, releases in March of 2024.

What is the connecting element for all the books in the series? The connecting element for all of the books in this series is women in paleontology.

What do readers have to look forward to in the rest of the series? Lots of digging for dinosaur bones, a race against time for a prestigious museum display, lots of suspense, the opening of Dinosaur National Monument, and so much more!

THE HEART'S CHOICE - Tracie Peterson, Kimberley Woodhouse - One Free Book

Tracie
Tracie Peterson (www.traciepeterson.com) is the award-winning author of over 100 novels, both historical and contemporary. Her avid research resonates in her many bestselling series. Tracie and her family make their home in Montana.

Kimberley Woodhouse (www.kimberleywoodhouse.com) is an award-winning, bestselling author of more than 25 fiction and nonfiction books. Kim and her incredible husband of 30-plus years live in the Poconos, where they play golf together, spend time with their kids and grandbaby, and research all the history around them.

Booklist referred to Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse as a “dynamic authorial duo.” They once again prove their mastery of the historical romance genre in The Heart’s Choice, the first book in The Jewels of Kalispell series. Set in Kalispell, Montana, The Heart’s Choice offers a romantic tale which culminates in a daring and intense race against time. This book released today.

About the Story: As a young girl, Rebecca Whitman witnessed a wrongful conviction of a person she knew was blameless. This incident impacted and changed the tide of her life and made her determined to fight for and defend the innocent. As an adult, she has taken on the role of the first female court reporter in Montana. She is paid to record trials—but not to have an opinion. When a guiltless man is condemned, Rebecca’s investigative nature leaves her unsettled, and she will do everything in her power to right the wrong.

Kimberley
Mark Andrews arrived in Kalispell as a teen. His father, a well-respected man in the community, had built up a large and successful ranch and planned to have Mark take over operations when he returned from college. But Mark prefers to wrangle books not cattle. He has accepted the job as the librarian of the brand-new Carnegie library. He loves what he does and is intrigued when patron Rebecca Whitman seeks help with research in order to prove a man’s innocence.

Can Mark convince his dad that what he does is important and vital while also helping Rebecca find the evidence needed to free an innocent man before it is too late?

Escape to the lush Montana countryside for a heart-gripping story of mysteries solved and justice prevailing from the pens of bestselling authors Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse.

Can you please provide a brief summary of your novel, The Heart’s Choice? They must uncover the truth before it's buried forever.

After witnessing a wrongful conviction as a young girl, Rebecca Whitman—the first female court reporter in Montana—is now determined to defend the innocent. During a murder trial, something doesn't sit well with her about the case, but no one except the handsome new Carnegie librarian will listen to her.

Mark Andrews's father sent him to college hoping he would take over the business side of the family ranch, but Mark would rather wrangle books than cows. When a patron seeks help with research in hopes of proving a man's innocence, Mark is immediately drawn to her and her cause.
In a race against time, will Rebecca and Mark find the evidence they need—and open their hearts to love—before it's too late?

The Heart’s Choice is the first book in The Jewels of Kalispell series. What is the connecting element for all of the books in this series? We’ve used three fascinating historical landmarks in Kalispell. The Carnegie Library, which is now the Hockaday Museum; The Great Northern Railway Depot, which is now the Chamber of Commerce; and the McIntosh Opera House, which is still there, but needs renovation and is unopen to the public.

What was the inspiration for The Heart’s Choice? We have lots of inspirations for our books. Tracie and I have a blast when we brainstorm and research together. But for this book, two big ones stood out: One was the unique landmarks we used—in this case the brand-new Carnegie Library. The second was to have our heroine be a court stenographer and love mysteries.

Your female protagonist, Rebecca Whitman, witnessed a wrongful conviction as a young girl. How did this event impact her life? It made her want to fight for the underdog and always seek justice. So she ventures into the law by become a court stenographer. When she is working on a case in the courtroom in Kalispell, she becomes passionate that a man being tried for murder is actually innocent.

Librarian Mark Andrew has failed to live up to his father’s expectations. What were his father’s plans for him and what route did he choose instead? Mark’s father built a large ranch and longed for his son to continue the empire. But Mark’s passion is with books and he is the director of the new library.

How does Mark try to convince his father that what he does is important and vital? Mark and his dad have to learn some hard lessons in The Heart’s Choice. The biggest being that loving someone means to support their dreams and passions.

Rebecca Whitman and Mark Andrew work in completely different fields. How did their paths cross? Marvella Ashbury (the judge’s wife who will be in each of the books in this series) is set on matchmaking the two although the young people don’t make it easy in the beginning. But since they both share a love of books, Rebecca finds herself at the library seeking Mark’s help. Especially when a man’s life hangs in the balance.

The Heart’s Choice is set in Montana. Why did you choose this location for the setting of your new novel? We both love Montana and, for a few short years, had the opportunity to live less than two miles apart in the Bitterroot Valley. Kalispell is one of our favorite places.

A MARK OF GRACE - Kimberley Woodhouse - One Free Book

Bio: Kimberley Woodhouse is an award-winning, bestselling author of more than twenty-five fiction and nonfiction books, including The Heart of Alaska series and The Treasures of Nome series. Kim and her incredible husband of thirty-plus years live in the Poconos, where they play golf together, spend time with their kids and grandbaby, and research all the history around them.

About the Book. Ruth Anniston loves working at the El Tovar Hotel, nestled in the breathtaking landscape of the Grand Canyon. But life took an abrupt turn when she was attacked by a mountain lion, which left her physically scarred, broken, and angry at God. Originally serving as the hotel’s headwaitress, Ruth now finds herself behind the scenes as a kitchen and dining room supervisor. When money begins to disappear from the hotel, Ruth's entire livelihood is put at risk, since the thefts seem to center around the kitchen and dining room.

Frank Henderson wants to help Ruth, but he has finally succeeded in obtaining his dream job as the head chef at the El Tovar. If he offers his assistance, will he risk everything he has worked for? But as Frank wrestles with his growing affection for Ruth, both his career—and his heart—are in jeopardy.

As tensions run high, Ruth and Frank must work together to save the El Tovar and forge a new path for the future together.

Welcome back, Kimberley. A Mark of Grace is the third and final volume in the Secrets of the Canyon series. What is the connecting element for all of the books in this series? The Grand Canyon, the El Tovar Hotel, and the Harvey Girls connect all the books in this series.

Why did you choose the Grand Canyon as the location for your series? I’d been wanting to write a Harvey Girls series for more than a decade, and in my mind, I couldn’t think of a better location than Harvey’s Crown Jewel, the fabulous El Tovar Hotel, which sits on the rim of the canyon.

What inspired the idea for this series? Back in 2008, when I first went to the Grand Canyon for research, there were several historical elements that kicked my author gears into motion. Things as simple as the information placards had me jotting down different ideas as I soaked in all the grandeur and beauty of the canyon.

What do readers have to look forward to in this thrilling conclusion? This book is Ruth’s story, and I’ve had hundreds of readers ask if Ruth would get her own book. This heroine has always been the one to guide the girls under her as the headwaitress. She’s been the one to give advice and wisdom. In A Mark of Grace, she struggles with several crises that are out of her control. She’s lost a good bit of confidence and must find her own path again.

Are there any threads that run through the whole series that will be wrapped up in A Mark of Grace? There’s an accident in the previous book in the series, A Gem of Truth, that greatly affects Ruth. Her story really comes out because of that.

Both of your protagonists, Ruth Anniston and Frank Henderson, work at the El Tovar Hotel, which has a long and rich history within the grounds of the Grand Canyon. Can you please tell readers about their different roles at the hotel? Ruth Anniston has been a headwaitress for Harvey Houses for more than a decade. She’s had the prestigious position at the El Tovar since its opening. But after her accident in A Gem of Truth, she’s now the kitchen and dining room supervisor.

Frank Henderson has been a chef for the Harvey Empire for many years. When the El Tovar was finished, he was thrilled with the assignment of assistant head chef. At the beginning of A Mark of Grace, Frank receives a promotion he’s always dreamed of obtaining. But the stakes are high, and the job may demand some sacrifices that Frank is not willing to make—especially when it comes to Ruth.

Ruth Anniston has had a dramatic shift in the role she plays at the hotel. What led to this change in position? <spoiler> She was attacked by a mountain lion in A Gem of Truth, leaving her face scarred and her leg severely injured. Since she can’t stand for the long hours required on the floor of the dining room, the hotel manager, Mr. Owens, gives her a new position. It’s needed anyway, since the hotel is in its prime and growing.

What lessons do you hope readers gain from reading A Mark of Grace? God’s unconditional love is available for everyone. We don’t have to be “good enough” to come to Him. We don’t have to do anything. In fact, it’s the understanding that salvation has absolutely nothing to do with us, and everything to do with Him and what He sacrificed for us.

You have written more than twenty-five fiction and nonfiction books. Can you please tell us what you love most about writing historical fiction? I absolutely love learning from history, so the research part for me is exceptionally fun. I spend months researching each book. I hope that my readers will take away some of the same awe that I found while writing the story, especially in all the amazing people and events that have shaped us and paved the way.

What are you working on next? I'm super excited about my next series for Bethany House. It includes paleontology, dinosaurs, and some amazing history. I just finished the manuscript for the first book and can’t wait for the editing phase.

How can readers connect with you? My website is kimberleywoodhouse.com. All of my social media channels are there as well.

Thank you, Kimberley, for sharing this book with us. I love Harvey girls’ stories.

A GEM OF TRUTH - Kimberley Woodhouse - One Free Book

Bio: Kimberley Woodhouse is an award-winning, bestselling author of more than thirty fiction and nonfiction books including The Heart of Alaska series and The Treasures of Nome series. Kim and her incredible husband of thirty-plus years have two adult children. She loves the gift of story and is passionate about music and Bible study.

Kimberley Woodhouse has won multiple awards for her historical novels, which are filled with adventure and romance. In A Gem of Truth, book two in the Secrets of the Canyon series, Woodhouse plunges readers deep into the recesses of the Grand Canyon in search of a legendary treasure. Themes of honesty, love, and one’s worth regardless of their past are intricately woven together in this captivating historical narrative.

About the story: Julia Schultz’s reputation is on the line. She is known for being a storyteller, or as some see it, a liar. With a dark and painful past, Julia’s stories were her way of thwarting the pain while making herself interesting to others. But her stories need to come to an end if she wants to prove herself trustworthy. Longing for a fresh start and a second chance to earn real trust, Julia takes a job as a Harvey Girl at the El Tovar Hotel, where she’s challenged to be her true self.

Christopher Miller takes pride in running his family’s small jewelry shop. But when he discovers that he has six weeks to buy the building from his landlord before it is sold, he must find a way to save his grandfather's legacy.

United by the discovery of a legendary treasure, Chris and Julia find hope in each other as they work together. But when Julia’s past catches up with her, doubt creeps into Chris’s heart. Can he really trust her and her stories?

Your books are filled with just the right amount of adventure, intrigue, and romance. What was the inspiration for your new novel A Gem of Truth? Back in 2008, I was at the Grand Canyon with my kids, who were young teens. There was an interpretive sign that explained about the Spanish explorers who saw the Canyon in the 1500s. But they left it because they were in search of what they thought was greater—the cities of gold.

All kinds of story ideas started in my mind that day. The legend that I created for A Gem of Truth goes back to those early explorers. While the history of them is very real, the legend is a figment of my own imagination.

Your main protagonist, Julia Schultz, has a reputation for being a storyteller, or as some see it, a liar. What details in her past led her to spinning untruthful tales? Julia was orphaned at an early age—and the circumstances are quite hideous and traumatizing to her young heart. So, to keep it all a secret, she comes up with fantastic tales about what actually happened to her parents. It becomes her way of gaining approval. Soon, she’s making up stories about many aspects of her life.

In addition to the theme of truthfulness, what other lessons or themes are found in your novel? Unconditional love. Forgiveness. Finding worth in who God created you to be.

Longing for a fresh start in life, Julia takes on a new position as a Harvey Girl. Can you explain the role of a Harvey Girl? The Harvey Girls are waitresses who were incredibly fascinating. They served guests a full course meal in a mere forty-five minutes as the train stopped along its journey. The Harvey Houses were located along the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad lines. The rules the Harvey Girls had to follow and the perfection they had to display in service were phenomenal.

A Gem of Truth is set in the Grand Canyon. Why did you choose this setting? I’ve been wanting to do a series on Harvey Girls for a long time, and after visiting the historic El Tovar Hotel, I knew I had to set my new series at the Grand Canyon. There’s nothing like it in the world. And back in 1907—when this book takes place—it was still extremely remote and the El Tovar was at the height of its glory days as the crown jewel of the Harvey Empire.

A Gem of Truth is the second novel in the Secrets of the Canyon series. What is the connecting element for all of the books in this series? Each book has the canyon that connects them, as well as the Harvey Girls and the El Tovar. Every one of the heroines has a secret that must come to light.

What do readers have to look forward to in the rest of the series? A Mark of Grace releases in January of 2023. Ruth Anniston, a secondary character and head waitress in the first two books, is the heroine.

What do you love most about writing historical romance novels? I love history—and love how we can learn from it. I also receive so many letters from readers whose lives have been touched or changed by my books. I think that’s what I love most—seeing how story impacts people’s lives for the better.

How can readers connect with you?

EVER CONSTANT - Tracie Peterson, Kimberley Woodhouse - One Free Book

Dear Blog Readers, today I'm featuring Ever Constant by Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse. Instead of an interview, we have a note from both of the authors and an excerpt from the book. I hope you enjoy it. I know I want to read the rest of the book after reading this passage. We will have the regular free book drawing.

Several years ago, Tracie and I were having a book signing and fund-raising event for the scholarship fund in Cassidy Hale’s honor with the launch of our Heart of Alaska series’ In the Shadow of Denali. Music students of mine—the Powell girls—came to meet their beloved favorite author, Tracie Peterson. The girls’ mom—Monica—and I are dear friends, and she’s quite a fan as well. The excitement as the foursome walked into the event was contagious. Even though the girls knew me really well, had spent hours at my home, and understood that I had written several books already with Tracie, the joy of getting to meet her in person put them over the moon and in total fan mode. Giggles and smiles and chatter filled the air.

It was at that event that Tracie looked at me and said, “Books need to be written about three precocious, musical, redheaded sisters.”

The Treasures of Nome series was born that day. The three main characters throughout this series are named after my precious girls. (I will always claim them Ever Constant as mine—once a student of mine, always one of my kids.) Whitney, Havyn, and Madysen. And while we might have used a few character traits of the real girls, the Powell sisters in our series are purely fictitious. I’m truly thankful that the real sisters haven’t had to endure all the craziness we threw at the characters in our books.

Tracie and I have loved sharing these girls, the chicken stories, the sled dogs, the chaos with the sheep, the cheese making, and all the other adventures in this series with you.

For those of you who have read Jack London’s Call of the Wild or have seen the movie, you know the command mush is used to get the dogs to go. Most likely this is the English derivation from the French-Canadian marche, which meant “go.”

In this book, you will find these terms: Let’s go simply means “go.” (The most common terms used are hike, let’s go, and all right, which you might remember me using in Race Against Time.)

Haw means “turn left.”

Gee means “turn right.”

Whoa means “slow down and come to a stop.”

Because I have spent so much time with real-life dog-sled pros while we lived in Alaska and during research trips there, I want to honor the knowledge they’ve poured into me and respect the amazing sport.

The Grand Nome Hotel and Golden Palace Restaurant in this book are fictitious. I know how many of you love the historical landmarks we use, but in this instance we needed to create something for the purposes of the story.

You will also notice that there are two different terms used for the native people. Inupiat is plural, Inupiaq is singular. There you have it, your language lesson for the day. Lastly, I wanted to tell you about something that a lot of people don’t know. Are you ready?

The northern lights—auroras—make noise.

This is shown in Ever Constant, and I wanted to assure you that, yes, it is true! I’ve heard them many times myself, but it’s not loud. In fact, the best way to truly experience them is to be out away from everything else. Their sound has been described as crackling, the bursting of soap bubbles, and sputtering. Sometimes you have to concentrate on listening to actually hear them.

Check out the Note from the Authors at the end of the book for some fun facts and links. And make sure you join us for our next series, which takes place in Kalispell, Montana. As always, we couldn’t do what we do without YOU, our readers.

Enjoy the journey, Kim and Tracie

Prologue

Cripple Creek, Colorado—1889

Flurries of snow drifted down from the dark and cloudy sky. Whitney Powell shivered and lifted her face to the heavens as she stopped in the middle of the quiet street. Mama would scold her for being out in the wee hours of the morning, but it was her mother’s tears that woke her.

Daddy wasn’t home. Again. Which meant one thing. Whitney wanted to growl out her anger and throw something. Really hard. She’d been old enough to understand what was going on for a couple of years now. No matter how much her parents tried to hide it.

Lifting her chin, she clenched her jaw against the chill in the wind and shoved her hands into her coat pockets. She had to fix Mama’s tears. Havyn and Madysen were too young. So even if she had to drag her good-for-nothin’ father back from the saloon––again––at least he would be home.

She cringed. Good for nothin’? What a horrible thought! What would Mama say? How often had she drilled into her that thoughts were just as important as the words that came out of her mouth? Reminded her that God knew every one of them?

No doubt about it, their mother would be crushed. And she’d be so embarrassed if she found out that her oldest daughter had gone to Saloon Row to haul her father home. More than once.

Mama was the best lady in the world. And the most talented. If only she could stand up for herself. She always saw the good in everyone, believed in them, cheered them on, and recognized what she called their potential.

Why couldn’t she see that people took advantage of her goodwill? No matter how many times Mama had been hurt, she’d still forgive.

Whitney gritted her teeth. In all her ten years, she’d never met anyone on earth as good as her mama. If only she could be as kind and generous. No matter how much she tried to mimic her mother’s behavior, she couldn’t do it. Mama’s patience and goodness rivaled that of any saint. Granddad said so himself.

“Maybe by the time I’m all grown up I can be like Mama.” Her words puffed from her mouth in the icy air.

For now, as the oldest daughter, it fell to her to take care of their mother when their father wasn’t capable of doing it. She’d gone to get him four times now. Four. She’d had to scrape up all her courage to go to the saloons that first time, but she’d done it. Because she loved her Mama and couldn’t watch her suffer and worry.

She shook her head and continued walking toward Saloon Row. The still of the evening was disrupted by sounds of  the establishments ahead. The noise crescendoed with every few steps.

How many more times would she have to do this? How long before someone found out? She’d thought about askingGranddad for help. Other than her sisters, he was her best friend. But he already didn’t think too well of Daddy. . . .

The wind bit at her face while the scent of logs burning in stoves filled her nose.

Music from the saloons drifted toward her, and she flinched. It was nothing like the beautiful music they played and sang at home. This was harsh, raucous, and out of tune. How could people even stand it? It hurt her ears. The closer she got, the more she hated the sound, the noise, the smells. Oh, to curl up in her bed like her younger sisters and go to sleep as if she didn’t have the weight of the world on her shoulders. All because Daddy couldn’t control himself.

Two men wobbled down the street toward her, then one of them doubled over and got sick in the middle of the road. She covered her face with her scarf and stepped several paces around them. Why did they do that to themselves? Disgusting.

Picking up her stride, she kept her chin down. There were things here that she didn’t want to see.

Not again.

Questions peppered her brain. She wouldn’t allow them entry. Best to think about music. Mama. Havyn and Madysen.

Wait a minute . . . the hairs on the back of her neck prickled and a shiver raced up her spine. A lump in the street—no, not a lump. A man.

For a moment, she couldn’t take another step. Could barely breathe. No. Please. That scrawny heap couldn’t be her father. But . . . the blue coat.

She’d recognize the coat anywhere. Mama made it for him last Christmas.

With a deep breath, she moved forward. At least she could be thankful he wasn’t inside one of the saloons. She hated going in them. The adults always tried to shoo her out, but her presence made it easier to get her dad out the door. No one wanted a little girl inside.

The closer her feet brought her to the telltale form, the more she wanted to run away. But then she was standing beside him. Daddy wasn’t moving. Was he even breathing?

She knelt down beside him and poked at his shoulder. Hard.

Nothing happened. When she touched his face, it was cold. Her stomach revolted and her heart sank.

Oh, Daddy . . .

Shaking her head, she closed her eyes and took several deep breaths. A sharp clenching in her chest made her gasp for air. She fought the tears that threatened to flood her eyes and race down her face. He wouldn’t leave them . . . would he?

As much as she detested his actions, he was still her daddy.

She leaned her ear close to his face. He stunk. It made her stomach turn again.

She couldn’t hear any breath. She poked him again. Harder. And again. Even harder.

“Daddy?” She shook him with all she had. No response.

She touched his face again. Cold. But it was snowing outside, and the temperature was frigid. Maybe he was passed out. He did that at home all the time lately.

Sitting down beside him, she shook him and poked him. Over and over. If he was dead . . . what would they do? Mama and Havyn and Madysen would cry. So would she.

What would become of them?

THE EXPRESS BRIDE - Kimberley Woodhouse - One Free Book

Dear Reader, I’m featuring another book in the Daughters of the Mayflower series. And Kimberley Woodhouse is one of my favorite authors. I know you’ll love this story.

Welcome back, Kimberley. How did you come up with the idea for this story?
Well, I chose the era of the Pony Express and had to research that a great deal. Then all of the Daughters of the Mayflower have a thread of espionage running through them. Figuring out how I wanted to work that in was fun – I decided to use treasury notes from the time (since there wasn’t paper money yet in America) and the forging of them. But it was really the characters and their pasts that made it all come to life. Forgiveness is a big theme.

I love authentic historical things in the novels, and forgiveness is one of my favorite themes. If you were planning a party with Christian authors of contemporary fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
Ronie Kendig, Colleen Coble, Susan May Warren, Rachel Hauck, Nancy Mehl, Becky Wade. Because I LOVE their books and they are all wonderful people.

I love that group. I know all of them personally, except one, and I also LOVE all of their books. Now let’s do that for a party for Christian authors of historical fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
Tracie Peterson, Karen Witemeyer, Connilyn Cossette, Mary Connealy, Becca Whitham, Kim Vogel Sawyer. Again, because I love, love, love their books and they are some of my favorite people.

I love these authors books, too. And there’s an author I mentored in each group. Many times, people (and other authors) think you have it made with so many books published. What is your most difficult problem with writing at this time in your career?
My most difficult problem at this time is just keeping my schedule under control. There’s several book deadlines a year, plus all the edit deadlines. Plus speaking engagements and everything else that goes along with it. I’m a full-time author, but I’m also a full-time pastor’s wife.

We will pray for you as you move forward in both careers. Tell us about the featured book.
The Express Bride
takes place in 1860 during the short period of the Pony Express. The tagline on the back of the book says: The Wilderness is a great place to hide…

Jackie is the heroine and she has had a pretty idyllic life, but everything comes crashing down when her father dies, and her past comes to light.

Elijah is the hero and is in search of his partner’s long-lost benefactor because she will inherit the fortune, but hits roadblock after roadblock.

Then there’s a threat to the US economy with the forgeries of Treasury notes…

They all must find the truth, and learn about forgiveness.

Please give us the first page of the book.
This is from the Prologue which is 1834:
With shaking limbs, she climbed into the awaiting, plush carriage. The precious bundle in her arms worth far more than money, houses, trinkets, or trunks of clothing that she left behind. Time stood still for a moment as the scent of the fresh, spring rain filled her senses and transported her thoughts back to another spring day. If only things had turned out differently. How she loved the gardens in spring.
As her memories rushed over her, the gravity of what she was about to do yanked her back to the reality around her with a harsh jolt.

The unmistakable sound of pounding footsteps on the brick walkway above her made her cower into the corner of the carriage.

Oh, why couldn’t the driver hurry? She’d paid him handsomely to take her on the first leg of her journey and she needed him to get the horses moving. Fast.
Her heart thundered in her chest, knowing all too well what every second meant. Every beat harder and more painful than the last. Footsteps crunched around the carriage and then soft words were spoken to the team. Didn’t he realize the urgency?

Oh, please God… please. Help us get away in time so—

“Nooooooo!” The deep, bellowing scream interrupted her prayer and made her shiver.

She didn’t dare look. But she couldn’t help herself. Opening one eye, she peeked out the window and saw the man she’d loved—and feared—the most running down the front stairs outside of their massive house, a bottle in his right hand.

I’m sure all my readers wonder, along with me, if she gets away. How can readers find you on the Internet?

THE GOLDEN BRIDE - Kimberley Woodhouse - One Free Book

Dear Readers. Kimberley is a good friend and one of my favorite authors. (I know. I have a lot of favorites.) I just love all of her books. I think you will, too.

Welcome back, Kimberley. Tell us about your salvation experience.
I grew up in a wonderful Christian Home. My father is a pastor and I came to understand my need for a Savior at a very young age. I know that I’m very fortunate to have the growing up years that I had. My whole life has been in full-time ministry. My husband is also a pastor and we’ve been serving together for almost thirty years. Between being a pastor’s wife and my writing ministry, life is full. God is good.

You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?
Tracie Peterson, Becca Whitham, Karen Ball, Kayla Woodhouse, Darcie Gudger because they are my Crit group.

Yes, our crit groups are always important to us writers. Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.
I speak and teach every year to tens of thousands of people around the country. A lot of times it’s about just writing, and a lot of times it’s about our family’s journey. Sometimes it’s both.
I speak to writers’ groups, churches, women’s groups, retreats, conferences, etc.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?
Oh goodness – one time for a speaking engagement at a mega-church (where it was televised too) they cued me to go on stage too soon. The band was starting another song. So I turned right back around and waved at the audience. Lol. (And that’s not the only time that has happened! Ha!)

People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
I get asked that pretty much everywhere I go. I encourage people that if God has given them a story, they need to learn the craft so that they can tell that story to the very best of their ability for the glory of God. And I always ask them if they are willing to do a ton of work.

Good answer. Tell us about the featured book.
Can Olivia survive the crime and Gold Rush fever of 1849...and the countless marriage proposals?
A series for fans of all things related to history, romance, adventure, faith, and family trees.

The Daughters of the Mayflower series continues when Olivia Brighton finds herself widowed and working in her brother’s restaurant in San Francisco during the height of the rush for gold. Even though she receives at least twenty marriage proposals a day, she will never marry a gold miner. Her brother’s friend Joseph Sawyer has gotten caught up in local politics and the plight of Chinese in forced labor. The more Joseph gets pulled into investigating crime in the city, the less Olivia sees of the compassionate man. And just when she thinks she could love again, a fire threatens to steal all hope.

This sounds interesting. I know I’m going to love it.
