AN AUSSIE SUMMER CHRISTMAS - Six-Author Collection - A Giveaway of 5 Copies of the Ebook

An Aussie Summer Christmas
Six new inspirational romance novellas

Dear Readers, I'm thrilled to introduce this Christmas novella collection to you. I'm personally acquainted with the first 4 authors. I just finished reading this collection last week. It interfered with my working time, but I just had to read a few more pages. Now that I've enjoyed a book by each of the other 2 authors, I'll be looking for more of their books. I know you'll enjoy this collection as much as I did.

Melbourne Memories by USA Today bestselling author Marion Ueckermann

What surprised you the most when writing Melbourne Memories?
I had originally started this story to submit as another Passport to Romance for my publisher. However, when Narelle Atkins asked me about putting the Aussie story I’d started into this set, I decided this was the home for this story. For Passport to Romance stories, the authors have to write using three writing prompts, and so I’d planned my story around those. One of them was an artist. Wanting to think out of the box, I decided that my heroine would own one of the most popular coffee shops in Melbourne and create amazing latte art. What I didn’t know when I started planning and writing this story—and of course I was ecstatic when I discovered it in my research—was that Melbourne is renowned for its coffee culture. I’m always amazed at how God directs my writing—even when I don’t know, He knows, and plants the story ideas in my mind, and then surprises me when I discover how well the story fits for its storyworld.

Next Door Santa by USA Today bestselling author Lacy Williams

What is special about your novella in this collection?
I love Christmas books and movies and always have. (While You Were Sleeping, anyone???). So being invited to this collection was a big YES from the start. I'm from Oklahoma in the U.S. and we have mild/cold winters here, so imagining the warmth of a beach Christmas was great fun! I'd love to go one day when my kids get bigger and experience it myself. Another fun thing that I included in the book was the dog, Ollie. I'm a huge dog person and loved doing some research about dogs and vets in Australia and incorporating that into the story.

Seaside Christmas by Narelle Atkins

In Seaside Christmas, Gus is a political advisor and Chelsea can’t stand politics. Does politics play a big role in the story?
The answer is yes and no. Gus works for a NSW Senator based in Sydney, Australia. This means Gus lives and works in Canberra, the national capital, when Parliament is sitting. His job involves travel and this aspect of his career is explored in the story. During the story Chelsea meets Gus for coffee in Parliament House and we gain an insight into his political career. His political party affiliation and political views are not mentioned in the story. Chelsea’s father was the mayor of her local council when she was a teen. She’s not interested in talking about politics with anyone, including. Gus. The focus of the story is on their romance and how his career impacts their developing relationship.

A Christmas Resolution by Rose Dee

Considering most resolutions happen on New Year’s Eve, what is your novella, A Christmas Resolution all about?
Resolution is the name of my fictional island that sits off the Australian tropical coast. For those who have no idea where this is, it’s up the top of the country – where the Great Barrier Reef is. This story ties in with my Resolution series. Think long sandy beaches, clear blue ocean, salt air, and as it is set at Christmas time, summer breezes. In the story, you will find romance, some drama, the Aussie larrikinism our country towns are known for, as well as a message of faith and overcoming. Each of my Resolution books hold stories of redemption, and the resolution to our struggles that only comes from faith in Jesus. And I believe those sort of resolutions can happen any day of the year.

All is Bright by Andrea Grigg

You mention that Josh, the hero in All is Bright, is a secondary character in your first book, A Simple Mistake. Why did you decide to write your novella about him?
It was a no-brainer really. I’d always felt sorry for Josh and was thrilled to be able to give him his Happy Ever After. When we’re introduced to Josh in A Simple Mistake, he’s already a widower. He meets Lainey straight after coming back from teaching overseas, where he went to “get away from it all.” He’s ready to find love again, and is pretty annoyed when things don’t work out, and for good reason! (Those of you who’ve read A Simple Mistake will know what I mean J).

The hard part about writing Josh’s story meant I had to write about finding love after losing a spouse; not an easy topic, and not one I’ve experienced myself. Putting myself in his shoes made me teary a few times, believe me!

Falling for Maddie Grace by Meredith Resce

Why did you choose to use Aussie Rules football as the backdrop for your story?
I am a mad footy fan and watched the emergence of women in this sport, mostly in support-staff roles.  During one game, the young female goal umpire was nearly steam-rolled by one of the players. Fast, fit and large, if he’d hit her, she would have been flattened. This stirred my imagination. I decided Maddie was going to be Australia’s first professional female umpire, who gets hit by one of the players, Zac.

Zac’s public faith is often scrutinised. The media are waiting for him to fall from grace. When they are both knocked unconscious, he regains his senses,  and carefully wipes blood from her face—in the eye of every camera. It’s taken out of context, and they are accused of a secret affair, and a breach of professional ethics.

An Aussie Summer Christmas – six new Novellas set in the land Downunder is available now at Amazon for the special price of $.99.

Thank you, Marion, Lacy, Narelle, Rose, Andrea, and Meredith for sharing this collection with us. I fell in love with Australia decades before it became so popular in the US. As a matter of fact, I have an unpublished novel that is partially set in Australia. Maybe I should pull that out and finish it. Meredith and Andrea--all of you really--I love to promote other Christian authors, and all of you would be welcome to schedule an interview on my blog with your other books. I've feathered Marion, Lacy, Narelle, and Rose before.

ONCE UPON A COWBOY - Lacy Williams - One Free Ebook

Dear Readers, I first met Lacy Williams when I spoke to a writer’s group in Oklahoma. It was my pleasure and great blessing to encourage her at that time, and I’ve enjoyed watching her, from afar in Texas, as her writing career developed and grew. And now she’s setting fairy tales in modern time with cowboys. Two of my favorite things. What’s not to love?

Welcome back, Lacy. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
I’m excited to be working on more indie releases. I have six books planned in the Cowboy Fairytales series and have some ideas of what I’ll write in the fall. I do have some time off planned coming up in July and August (you’ll see why in the next answer!). Also releasing later this month is THE BUTTERFLY BRIDE, a novella I really enjoyed writing for Serenade Books.

Tell us a little about your family.
Hubby and I have three kids aged six and under (two girls and a boy), and we have a new arrival on the way, coming in early July! Our oldest just “graduated” from Kindergarten and is already reading chapter books—I think she’s going to be a reader like mom. Our second will go into Pre-K in the fall and he’s soooo excited to get to go to school with big sister. All three are on the countdown for the new arrival and have helped with decorating the baby’s room.

Congratulations. I didn’t know about the new blessing to join your family. Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
I have a lot less time to read now, especially with kids demanding a lot of my time. Most days I have the choice between writing or reading (no time to do both!). I try really hard to turn off my internal editor when I read and just relax, and I enjoy really diverse tastes in fiction, though most have romance threads in them!

What are you working on right now?
I am working through edits on the third and fourth books in the Cowboy Fairytales series (THE TOAD PRINCE and THE BEASTLY PRINCESS) and plotting out book five (THE LOST PRINCESS). This has been a really fun series to write. Each book is loosely based on a well-known fairy tale, but they are set in modern day times and also have cowboys in them (cowboys are kind of my thing). Revisiting the fairy tales has been a really fun exercise.

What outside interests do you have?
Hubby and I sneak date nights when we can. We love to see movies (romance for me, action for him) or go out to eat and just enjoy the peace and quiet.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
Most recently, I’ve written contemporary cowboys in Oklahoma and Texas. I grew up on my grandpa’s farm in small-town Oklahoma, running around in the fields and checking the cows with my dad and fishing when we could sneak away. My growing-up years played a huge part in building my imagination and it’s only natural that many of the settings I’ve chosen have grown out of that small-town background.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
Probably Jane Austen. She’s my favorite historical author.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
I wish I’d known that deadlines never get any easier. It seems like the activities at school ramp up or my kids get sick just before every deadline, whether with a publisher or my own self-imposed deadlines for indie publishing. I’ve learned to write ahead when I can!

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
At this stage of my life, I’m learning a lot about flexibility and patience. Life with small children is a lot of fun, but can also be challenging. There is a lot of giving up of self and that’s not always easy either. But God strengthens me throughout and I’m so thankful for the blessings He has given me!

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
Write every day. Find a mentor. Never give up.

Tell us about the featured book.
ONCE UPON A COWBOY is a retelling of the Snow White fairytale. When Princess Alessandra barely survives an assassination attempt, she finds herself isolated on a Texas ranch with seven woolly cowboys—and she can’t help falling for the most irascible one of all, Gideon Hale.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Early February
Just keep smiling.
Princess Alessandra, second in line for the throne of Glorvaird, meandered through the crush of bodies as the Who's-Who of New York City society mingled on the sidewalk outside a ritzy hotel. Inside the ballroom would be even worse, stuffy with the heat of so many people. The icy air chilled her skin where the slinky dress she wore didn't cover nearly enough beneath her designer coat, but inside she'd be grateful to shed her outerwear.

She detested events like these. But her royal duty demanded her presence. Her sister, the crown princess, had tasked her with forging alliances with two powerful dignitaries, which she would attempt when she could get inside. Two hours, and she could return to her own hotel, several blocks away. And rid herself of the awful, pinching heels her stylist had provided.

Paparazzi snapped pictures from behind a cordoned-off line, the flashes from their cameras whisking her to the present and out of her thoughts. Hired security milled around, looking bored. After years of being in the public eye, she was used to the presence of both.

It didn't mean the press weren't as annoying as gnats, constantly buzzing in her ear.

One misstep, one faux pas, could follow her around on the Internet for a year.

She smoothed her skirt unobtrusively and kept the smile fixed on her face.
A hand on her elbow made her pause amidst the crowd.

Her bodyguard. Tim was dark-haired and fair-complected, bulky, and more than a head taller than she. He usually faded into the background.

The fact that he'd moved in close had her pulse speeding.

"What's—" wrong?

I’m loving it so far. Can’t wait until my copy arrives. How can readers find you on the Internet?

THE HOMESTEADER'S SWEETHEART - Lacy Williams - Free Book

Welcome, Lacy. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I love romance. I love the idea and execution of creating characters and watching them fall in love regardless of the impossible obstacles I put in their way. I love watching them become better because they are part of a matched pair. And I LOVE writing the ending of the story and giving them their happily ever afters.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
It is probably a toss up between the day I married my husband and the days my children were born. Right now I’m at a time in my life where my children bring so much joy, every day. The Little Prince (7 months) said “ma ma” for the first time earlier this week and my heart just expanded! And the Little Princess (2 years) is growing and she is such a little encourager! She will tell you “good job” or that you are beautiful (even when I’m in my mommy uniform of gym shorts and a t-shirt). They bring me such joy!

How has being published changed your life?
I’m a lot busier and I have to schedule my writing time carefully. Because my kids are small and I don’t want to miss any of the moments of them growing up (way too fast!), I try to spend most of their waking hours just focusing on them. That means my writing time is limited to naptimes (IF I can get them down at the same time!) and after bedtime. Which means when I sit down at the computer I have to GO: write quickly and know where the plot of the story is going. But I love being a mommy and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What are you reading right now?
On my Kindle right now: Mission: Out of Control by Susan May Warren (reading it a second time!), Out of Control by Mary Connealy, and too much more to name. :)

What is your current work in progress?
I’m working on a proposal featuring one of the sons of the hero in THE HOMESTEADER’S SWEETHEART. Oscar is a horseman who can tame any horse, but he can’t woo the schoolmarm without making a fool of himself.

What would be your dream vacation?
I would really love to travel to Australia. I’ve got some stories in mind for Aussie cowboys and I’d love to visit and see the country (it is so unique!), and also do all the touristy things like the beach and snorkeling, etc.

I’d love to go to Australia, too. How do you choose your settings for each book?
I have always loved reading westerns and so it was natural for me to set my stories in Wyoming. For my first book, I chose the area and town according to the needs of the story (needed mountains, ranch, canyons, and a small town). Then once I got to know the characters in that book, some of them needed to tell their own stories and so it worked for me to continue setting the stories there.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
My husband is a huge NBA basketball fan, and he’s got me hooked on our local team, the OKC Thunder. I am a huge Kevin Durant fan and would love to meet him someday. I know you can’t tell a lot from what you see just on TV, but he seems to have a good head on his shoulders. He kisses his mama after the games—how can you not like a guy like that??

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
I love my dogs. We have three Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. I’ve really enjoying doing obedience training with them. I like walking them and being outdoors. One of them is a trained Therapy Dog and we do visits, especially with the local library in a Kids Reading to Dogs program that is a lot of fun. With two little kids, that’s about all I have time for. :)

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
Not getting distracted by other stories/characters. I seem to get a lot of inspiration and there’s just never enough time to put all the stories to paper. I’ve got bulging files of story ideas and I’ve found that the best thing for me is to write down as much of the idea as I can and save it, and keep writing on my WIP (or I’ll never finish it!).

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Find a mentor. Ask someone to have coffee with you to talk about your writing. Don’t be annoying, but make connections online until you find someone who is further on in their career than you are and is willing to give you advice and guidance.

Tell us about the featured book.
The HOMESTEADER’S SWEETHEART is a fun story about a wealthy banker’s daughter (Penny) who needs to get out of town. She goes to her grandfather’s small homestead and meets his neighbor (Jonas), who has eight kids. She quickly finds herself falling for Jonas and his family but questions whether she could be happy in such reduced circumstances since she has been pretty pampered her whole life.

Just the kind of book I like to read. Please give us the first page of the book.
Wyoming Territory, summer 1890

Hadn't he promised himself not to get into a situation like this again?

Jonas White stood on the dusty street in his Sunday suit, letter clutched in his hand, gazing up at the fine house. It seemed too much of a coincidence that his neighbor and closest friend--although they were two generations apart in age--was related to a wealthy banker when Jonas desperately needed a loan. And the letter Jonas had promised to deliver for his friend would grant him access to the banker he'd been trying to see all day.

But Jonas had stopped questioning the Lord's hand in things once he'd met his neighbors, the Nelsons, just over five years ago.

Staring at the light spilling from the glass-paned windows onto the large, well-kept yard reminded Jonas of another place and time, and how as a child he'd often looked in on some of Philadelphia's wealthy families. Like those stately town houses, this house was ostentatious. Two-story and much larger than the other homes on the street. Or in the whole town of Calvin, Wyoming, for that matter.

Jonas resolutely pushed the painful memories to the back of his mind. His daughter needed him to do this, and he couldn't fail her.

I know I will love it. How can readers find you on the Internet?

MARRYING MISS MARSHAL - Lacy Williams - Free Book

I'm pleased to welcome Lacy with her debut book. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
It depends on the character! Depending on the book, I may relate more to the heroine or I may feel closer to the hero. In MARRYING MISS MARSHAL, the heroine has a lot of me in her: her independence (I am a very independent person, just ask my husband!); her desire for a family (I wrote this book primarily while “trying” and then waiting on my first child to be born); her sense of duty/loyalty. In my next book (not sold yet), the hero has a little more of my personality: he is a family man with strong devotion to his kids. He also talks to his animals (mainly a milk cow)—I converse with my dogs frequently… and they are great listeners!

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
I am not a very “quirky” person (again, just ask my husband… he is the impulsive one out of the two of us). I like things to be planned and I am a list-maker. But since my husband likes to do things last-minute sometimes, probably the most unusual thing I’ve ever done is take an impromptu trip out-of-state just to eat at his favorite childhood restaurant. Road trip!

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
I wanted to be an author since my childhood. I wrote a neighborhood newsletter and lots of stories. But I probably didn’t discover that I had what it took to be a “real” writer until high school, when I took a correspondence course with the Institute of Children’s Literature. That was my first experience submitting to an editor who critiqued my work. The course taught me a lot about having a thick skin and the importance of learning craft, and whetted my appetite to be published eventually.

Having been blessed to see some of your earlier writing, I knew you would make it. Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
Well, I’m one of those weirdos who likes to read a little bit of everything. In the last 18 months I have read everything from the Hunger Games trilogy (mainstream YA) to gentle historical inspirational romance by Kim Vogel Sawyer (one of my favorite authors) to westerns by Louis L’Amour (one of my dad’s favorite authors). I enjoy romantic suspense, speculative/fantasy fiction, but my all-time favorite genre is romance. I love happy endings.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
This is a really relevant question for me because I am one of those people who frequently gets caught up in “running.” A lot of times I feel like God has to whack me upside the head to remind me to take a few minutes and remember Who is in control and just enjoy what is happening right now. Two examples: back before my first child was born when I was still working, I rushed to work most days (sometimes running late). One morning there was a rainbow that looked like it touched down RIGHT in the middle of the road in front of me. What an awesome reminder of God’s creation and power. Then a few weeks ago, I was trying to get a lot of writing stuff done and my daughter wasn’t feeling well and was acting VERY clingy that day—which meant I couldn’t get anything done. Mid-morning, we headed out into the front yard to play, and she still wasn’t feeling very well and just wanted to sit in my lap. We ended up watching the birds together for about twenty minutes in a very peaceful way (which is unusual because my daughter is also a “go, go, go” personality) and it was such a warm, quiet moment between the two of us. Those kind of things remind me to slow down and enjoy the here and now while I can.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
Usually, the character’s first name comes to me naturally while I am brainstorming about “who” that character really is—their personality, background, traits, physical attributes, etc. I have a really hard time with last names and my method of solving that problem is to find a list of surnames common to the area I’m writing about during the time period I’m writing about, and I just pick from the list. For secondary characters, sometimes I have to change a name halfway throughout the book because I’ve realized I have five people with names starting with the same letter (Sam, Saul, Sarah…).

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
My daughter. She is an incredible little person, even though I feel like most of what makes her special isn’t something I’ve “done”, she just IS who she is. I can’t wait to meet her little brother in September!

I guess that means I won't be seeing you at the ACFW conference this year. If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
Probably a dog, my all-time favorite animal. I love dogs for their loyalty, because you always know where you stand with them (how can you misunderstand a growl or a wagging tail???), and because they are always so happy to see you—even if you’ve only been gone for five minutes. Right now, our family has three Cavalier King Charles Spaniels; they are such a joy to have around and are so good with our toddler daughter (I have my camera ready and am still waiting for that first time she dresses up Mr. Bingley in a tiara and tutu).

What is your favorite food?
I am an ice cream fanatic. Chocolate, rocky road, sundaes, milkshakes… if it’s chocolate and ice cream then I am in heaven.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
My greatest problem has probably been the fear of submitting (to an editor/agent). I can talk about my book just fine, but when it comes time to send that puppy off into the great unknown (also known as the “pile on the editor’s desk”)… it really freaks me out. Overcoming it has been only with a lot of prayer (and more prayers that then I won’t worry about it!) and also with pushing from my husband and critique partners to “go for it”. And the truth is, you can never be published if an editor never sees your work, right? So it was definitely something that I had to come face-to-face with and persevere through.

Tell us about the featured book.
Danna Carpenter has sworn to protect the people of her small town in Wyoming; problem is: they don’t want to be protected by a woman. It’s not proper.  Chas O’Grady is a tenderfoot detective from the big city who has been assigned a job tracking down some cattle rustlers; problem is: he isn’t good at handling the rugged Wyoming terrain. Danna and Chas strike a deal to work together that will benefit them both; problem is: they get caught up in a scandal and end up married. Can they take care of the bad guys in town? And will they fall in love along the way?

Publisher’s Weekly calls it "warmly romantic with a hint of adventure and an unconventional heroine" and says, "Williams's storytelling style is ... easy to follow to its cheery conclusion" (June)

RT Book Reviews says, "Williams’ debut is a great story with a twist, and it will keep readers riveted." (August)

Please give us the first page of the book.

Wyoming Territory, September 1889

The report of a rifle echoed through the red-walled canyon, ringing in Marshal Danna Carpenter's chest. A second report sounded close after the first.

She reined in her mount and pushed back her Stetson, instantly alert and scanning the area for trouble.

The shots could've been someone hunting game—although there wasn't much of it to be found in these washed-out ravines southwest of town—or it could've been someone discharging their weapon for a more nefarious purpose. As town marshal, she had to be prepared for both possibilities.

Danna's horse shifted beneath her, its movements telling her it sensed something wrong as well. But what?

Then she saw him, in the last rays of sunlight slipping over the canyon's edge. A man staggering along the canyon floor, booted feet dragging in the sandy soil. He carried some kind of luggage over his shoulder. From this distance, she couldn't see a rifle….

Too far away to determine his identity, Danna guessed she didn't know him. His clothes were too fine for these parts—dark pants, vest, jacket, and a bright white shirt. Most folks around here wore woolen trousers or denims, and plain cotton shirts.

What was he doing so far from town? And on foot? Any halfway intelligent person knew you didn't traipse around the unforgiving Wyoming landscape without a horse, or a mule at the very least.

Before she could decide whether to waste the last of the sunlight to check on the stranger, or to head out of the canyon toward home, her horse's ears flicked back and his shoulder quivered beneath her gloved hand. The ground trembled.

From around a natural bend in the canyon, a cloud of dust rose like steam from a kettle and sent fear skittering down Danna's spine.

And the terrible sound she was hearing began to make sense: hundreds of pounding hooves, getting closer every second.

Stampede.
