Welcome back, Lynn. What prompted you to write a Christmas novella? I love Christmas stories and the Christmas movies that our family watches year after year. (My favorite is How the Grinch Stole Christmas.) I have always wanted to write a Christmas-themed book but never had time—until the pandemic struck and all of our travel plans, family gettogethers, church events, and other fun activities were canceled, giving me plenty of extra time. My idea was to write a Christmas novella that was a mini sequel to one of my full-length novels, giving readers an enjoyable update on some of their favorite characters. The Wish Book Christmas brings readers back to the people and setting they first met in my novel If I Were You.

In The Wish Book Christmas, what message do you hope to convey about Christmas? Christmas is about the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ, given to us in love by our heavenly Father. He should be the focus of all that we do to celebrate. Christmas shouldn’t be just a spending spree with long lists of all the presents we need to buy and the gifts we hope to receive. Instead, it’s a time to return God’s love by freely giving ourselves, our time, and our talents to others, expecting nothing in return. This is the best way to glorify God and celebrate His Son’s birth at Christmas.

Please tell us a bit about the setting of your novella. The Wish Book Christmas takes place in a small Connecticut town in December of 1951. Christmas is one month away, World War II is in the rearview mirror, and Americans are enjoying renewed prosperity along with a “baby boom.” The main characters, Eve Dawson and Audrey Barrett, are British war brides who are struggling to raise their fatherless sons in the postwar bungalow they share. Readers first met Eve and Audrey and their five-year-old sons, Harry and Bobby, in my novel If I Were You, but this novella also reads very well as a standalone story.

Can you provide a brief backstory of your characters? Eve Dawson and Audrey Clarkson Barrett were childhood friends in England, where they grew up. Audrey and her wealthy family owned Wellingford Hall, a huge estate where Eve and her mother worked as servants. Their friendship flourishes in spite of their differences, and when World War II begins, the women enlist in the British army together, driving ambulances. They each fall in love with an American soldier and give birth to a son. But Audrey marries her son’s father and Eve does not. Audrey prepares to join her husband in America, but her plans end in tragedy when her husband dies suddenly. She decides to remain in England. Eve, who has no way to support her son and herself, decides to steal Audrey’s identity and move to America in her place. Eve’s deception is uncovered four years later when Audrey and her son arrive in America unannounced.

Your novella is set in 1951. Why do you feel the themes of this story are so relevant, both then and now? I think 1951 and 2021 are both times of great change and also prosperity. In both eras, the values and traditions of the past are being questioned and, in many cases, discarded for something new and modern. This is especially true of biblical values. As suburban life becomes busier and more secular in both time periods, the true meaning of Christmas as Christ’s birth is lost as the holiday becomes commercialized. In both 1951 and 2021, we long to recover the simple beauty and meaning of the holiday.

This story is a nostalgic harkening back to the iconic Sears Wish Book catalogue. Was this catalogue part of your childhood Christmases? Please explain. Oh yes! The Sears Wish Book was something my two sisters and I looked forward to every season. I remember the three of us poring over it together the way the two boys in my novella do, choosing among page after page of toys and dreaming of finding them all beneath the tree on Christmas morning. Like the mothers in the novella, our mother also made us limit our choices—which was often difficult to do! The catalogue would be limp and dog-eared by the time we gave Santa our final lists. When I was researching this novella, I was surprised and pleased to find back issues of the original Sears Wish Book online, dating back to the 1940s and ’50s. It was great fun to be reminded of all the toys from my childhood. And although the prices seemed ridiculously cheap by today’s standards, parents probably found them costly at the time.

Sears Wish Book catalogs were an important part of my life as a child, and now I own a couple of the older ones. If someone is standing in a bookstore considering your novella, what might you say to them to encourage them to read it? We all need a reminder now and then that Christmas isn’t about creating the perfect “Hallmark Christmas” with all the trappings and trimmings—and exhausting ourselves and our credit card limits in the process. The Wish Book Christmas offers inspiration for keeping the true meaning of Christmas at the forefront as we celebrate Christ’s birth. Readers with children and grandchildren will find some ideas for managing their kids’ expectations and teaching them to give.

What is your hope for this novella? My hope is that The Wish Book Christmas will rekindle the joy of giving and inspire creativity in shaping our Christmas traditions. The beauty of Jesus’ birth can be celebrated in simplicity and should be shared with neighbors who don’t know Him. I think most children are naturally generous, and I hope the story inspires parents to teach their children new ways to give at Christmas.

What lessons from this story do you hope will resonate with your readers? One of the characters in the novella, Eve Dawson, has a difficult time accepting God’s forgiveness for her past mistakes, feeling that she has to do something to earn it. I hope the message is clear that Jesus is God’s gift of grace to us so that our past can be forgiven. Like Eve, we can have a new life and a new beginning in Christ.

How did writing this story change you and your own perspective of Christmas? I love to lavish presents on my children and grandchildren, but writing this story reminded me that it’s more important to teach them, by my example, how to give generously to others. I want to reach out to my neighbors in new ways this Christmas and pare down all the expectations of what makes a “perfect” holiday.

Welcome, Lynn. Have you always loved books and reading? What about your formative years informed your love for reading and books? Books have been part of my life for as long as I can remember, beginning with bedtime stories when I was a child. My mother was the town librarian in the village where I grew up, so it’s not an exaggeration to say I was raised in a library. Over the years, I helped with everything from processing books to reading aloud for story hour, and I developed a deep appreciation for all sorts of books. In addition, my grandmother was a natural-born storyteller whose tales kept my sisters and me spellbound for hours on warm summer evenings.

How did you become a writer? I loved to read, but after a while it seemed like so many well-written books offered very little hope. Too many themes seemed to be “Life is hard and then you die.” I agree that life is hard—but God is good! So I sat down one day thirty-five years ago (I was a stay-at-home mom with a new baby at the time) and decided to write the kind of book I enjoyed reading—one that makes me laugh, makes me cry, and helps me learn something about myself and my life. I knew nothing about getting published (that would come later), but I quickly discovered how much I enjoyed writing. Eventually God brought a wonderful Christian author into my life who asked me to join her writers’ critique group, where I learned the basics of writing and publishing. As the years passed, I struggled to figure out if God was calling me to be a writer. I decided to persevere, and eleven years after I first sat down to write, my first novel was published.

My first book took eight years to publication. What made you want to write historical fiction? What about that genre do you enjoy? I write historical fiction because I love history, especially the little-known stories of ordinary people. For me, reading about the past and how people like me lived lives of courage in difficult times helps me live a life of faith and grace with God’s help. When we travel back in history through novels, I think it’s easier to see how God used tragic events as part of His redemption story. And that gives us faith to believe that He is still working now and that our lives can play a part in His story today.

What motivated you to write a story line about three women in the Netherlands and the challenges they faced due to the Nazi invasion in WWII? My inspiration was the book The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. I read this book years ago, and it had a profound effect on my Christian walk. Corrie’s family had a deep faith and love for Christ, which led them to hide Jews in their home, at great personal risk, after the Nazis invaded their country. Corrie’s testimony of faith and of God’s faithfulness in spite of all that she endured in a concentration camp made me long for a relationship with God like hers. In another inspiring autobiography, Things We Couldn’t Say, author Diet Eman tells how she and her fiancé worked for the underground in the Netherlands during this same time period, propelled by their Christian faith. Christians in the Netherlands suffered a great deal during WWII, yet accomplished brave, heroic deeds in Christ’s name. I wanted to honor them by telling their story.

Please tell us a bit about the setting of your novel. What prompted you to write about the Netherlands? Chasing Shadows takes place in the Netherlands during World War II, primarily in and around the city of Leiden. All of my books have been translated and published in Dutch, and my publisher has kindly invited me on book tours in the past to meet my readers in the Netherlands. I fell in love with that beautiful little country and wanted to write about it. I got to know it even better when our son Benjamin lived there for four years while earning his PhD from the University of Leiden. Also, my husband’s maternal grandfather emigrated from the Netherlands, so that added to my interest in learning the country’s history.

Please tell us about your main characters in Chasing Shadows and what specific challenges each one of them faces. Lena de Vries is a wife and mother who loves her life on a farm in the country outside of Leiden. But after the Nazi invasion, her Christian faith compels her and her husband, Pieter, to fight against the Nazis’ evil, putting her and her family at great risk. Lena’s daughter Ans de Vries is unhappy with her life on the farm and with her parents’ Christian faith. She takes a job in Leiden as a companion to Eloise Huizenga, who struggles with depression. When the Netherlands is invaded, Ans will need to find strength and renewed faith in order to keep Eloise and herself from despair, while walking the dangerous path of opposing the Nazis. Miriam Jacobs is a Jewish woman who flees from Germany to the Netherlands with her father to escape persecution. After falling in love with Avi Leopold in a refugee camp, she and her new husband and child will need to go into hiding in order to survive, with help from Lena and Ans.

I knew I had to read the book with a heroine named Lena. Who was your favorite character to write and why? I think I related to Lena the most because she is a wife and mother of three children, including an adult daughter. She had to make many difficult choices during the war and needed to consider not only her own safety and survival, but her family’s as well. She was forced to lean on God and to trust Him in impossible circumstances—something many wives and mothers must often do. And she had to learn the hardest lesson of all—not to hate, but to love our enemies as Jesus taught us to do.

What lessons can be learned from your main characters? All three women found themselves plunged into impossible circumstances that they never could have foreseen. Not only were their lives turned upside down overnight, they lived in daily suspense, never knowing what would happen next, how long the war would last, or if their lives would ever return to normal. One lesson I learned while writing this book was not to take my life for granted in the good years. And not to take my relationship with God for granted when things are going well, either. We never know when or how life could change, so the faith that gets us through the hard times must be cultivated and nourished in the good times. We’ll never know how strong we are, how strong our faith is, or how faithful God is until we endure hardship.

How much research did you have to do on the WWII period in the Netherlands? I was able to find timelines and history books that detailed the history of this era online and in the library. And I traveled to the Netherlands to do research on-site and in museums, taking lots of photographs and notes. Visiting the Westerbork concentration camp was an especially moving experience. But my favorite resources were the true stories of men and women who lived through this time period. Because I live in a community with a large Dutch immigrant population, I was able to interview people and read their memoirs and combine many of their firsthand stories into this novel. I asked my Dutch readers to send me their stories as well. Those true stories brought the story to life more than any history book ever could.

What is your hope for Chasing Shadows? How do you hope this story resonates with your readers? We’ve all been “at war” with the COVID-19 virus this past year, and the fear and uncertainty and isolation we’ve experienced has many parallels with an enemy invasion like the one my characters endure in this novel. It’s my hope that Chasing Shadows will lead readers to take a closer look at their own faith, just as I did after first reading The Hiding Place years ago. I remember wanting a faith like Corrie ten Boom and her family had, one that would sustain me through unforeseen trials and hardships. I pray that this novel will inspire readers to pursue a closer walk with God and a commitment to serve in His Kingdom with whatever gifts He has given them.

Welcome back, Lynn. Why do you write the kind of books you do?

I write historical fiction because I love history, especially the history of our nation. For me, reading about the past and how ordinary people lived lives of courage in difficult times, helps me live a life of faith and grace with God’s help. When we look back in history, I think it’s easier to see how God used tragic events as part of His redemption story. And that gives me faith to believe that He is still working now and that my life can play a part in His story, too.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?

The day, 44 years ago, when I married my husband and best friend, Ken.

How has being published changed your life?

It has deepened my faith and my walk with the Lord. I had to rely on Him every step of the way and trust that the work I was doing was not in vain. I had to listen closely to Him and understand that writing was a calling from Him.

What are you reading right now?

Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus by Ann Spangler and Lois Tverberg. It is wonderful!

What is your current work in progress?

I’m working on the sequel to Keepers of the Covenant, my current new release. On this Foundation will continue the story of the biblical books of Ezra and Nehemiah, and while Keepers of the Covenant featured Ezra as the main character, the one I’m working on now will feature Nehemiah.

What would be your dream vacation?

To rent a big house on a tropical island that has lots of bedrooms so my entire family could join me there. Of course, all of our meals would be included so we would never have to cook. And I would have a stack of excellent books to read on the beach, too.

How do you choose your settings for each book?

The inspiration for each of my books comes from an actual, historical time period, such as the Great Depression or the Civil War. As I read about the history of that time, I begin to imagine storylines and plots for my characters. Usually, the setting comes last and grows out of my research and the plot I decide on.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?

I would choose author Eugene Peterson. His books have had such a huge impact on my thinking and on my journey of faith, and I would love to hear his challenging thoughts in person. His lyrical, poetic use of language is extraordinary, and I would hope that just a little of it would rub off on me.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?

Riding my bicycle, hiking on the beach and in the woods, interior decorating, and traveling to foreign countries. It’s especially nice when two of my hobbies coincide and I can bicycle in foreign countries!

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?

The hardest thing for me is forcing myself to stay indoors and work on beautiful, sunny days when I’d rather be riding my bike or spending time with my family. The only way I can resist that urge is by looking at my calendar and remembering my deadline. I’ve learned that if I resist the temptation now, I’ll be saving myself a lot of grief and stress when my deadline comes.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?

Don’t give up. I needed to hear that advice several times along the way. Beginning authors also need to spend enough time in prayer to become convinced that God is truly calling them to write—not necessarily to be published, but to write. Once they accept that calling, they won’t be tempted to quit when tough times come.

Keepers of the Covenant is the second book in the Restoration Chronicles series. It brings the biblical book of Ezra to life and tells the story of how he led the Jewish exiles back to their homeland in Israel—and back to God. Haman paused near the parapet to gaze down at the sentries standing watch at the king’s gate. His obsession first began at that gate when an impudent Jew refused to bow down to him. The entire world bowed before Haman now that he’d earned a seat of honor above all of the king’s nobles, now that he’d become the second most important man in the empire. He’d spent his entire lifetime in the king’s service, yet after everything Haman had achieved, Mordecai the Jew refused to bow.

 “Lord Haman . . .?” He turned at the sound of the chief astrologer’s voice. “We have an answer for you, my lord.”  Haman took his time crossing to the waiting astrologers, unwilling to let them see his urgency or the power they held over him.

“What do the stars say tonight?” he asked, folding his arms across his chest.

“Tomorrow will be an extremely favorable day for you, my lord. We see no opposition from the heavens to whatever you plan. In fact, the heavenly bodies all line up in your favor.”

Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.

No single character is ever completely like me but I think I put a little bit of me in each one. When I write, I’m almost like an actress who gets into each character and plays the parts of different people as I write.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?

I spent a month in Israel volunteering on an archeological dig, getting dirty and searching for buried treasure as we excavated the ancient biblical city of Timnah.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?

I have always loved to read but there came a point where I became fed up with the Life is hard and then you die worldview of many popular books. I agree that life is hard, but God is good! So I decided to write a book with that worldview and message. I had no idea how well I’d be able to write but once I sat down and got started, I discovered how much fun it was to create characters and storylines. I was able to use my imagination and creativity and my lifelong love of story, and I realized, “Hey! I love doing this! I must be a writer!”

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.

All types—suspense, mysteries, historical fiction, nonfiction books, contemporary stories. I’m in a book club that picks all types of books to read and I love the variety.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?

Who says I’m sane? J I start each day with a quiet time, reading my Bible and praying, and I find that this discipline helps me keeps my priorities straight. I also make sure to set aside time in my schedule to relax and be with my family and friends. My husband and I take a three mile walk every morning and we also love to bicycle on the weekends and get out in nature.

How do you choose your characters’ names?

Once I choose a historical time period, I look up the most popular names from that era and choose one that seems to fit the character’s personality that I’m developing.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?

Raising my three outstanding adult children and seeing the wonderful mates they’ve married.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?

A bird because I love nature and I love to travel and see the world. (And birds get to go south for the winter where it’s warm.)

What is your favorite food?

Mexican food! Enchiladas, refried beans, tacos, guacamole, burritos—I could eat these every night.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?

Getting published for the first time was the biggest hurdle—and not giving up during the long road to publication. I overcame it only because my friends and family continued to encourage me, pray for me, and tell me to keep trying. They believed in me and loved my stories and wouldn’t let me give up.

OCTOBER 539 BC

A boom of thunder woke Daniel from a deep sleep. He lay in the darkness, disoriented, waiting for a flash of lightning to illuminate his room. The thunder rumbled again—but it wasn’t thunder, it was pounding. Who would pound on his door in the middle of the night?

“Coming,” he called as the noise continued. “I’m coming.” He climbed from bed, his movements slow at age eighty-two, and wrapped his outer robe around his shoulders like a blanket. The stone floor felt cold beneath his bare feet as he groped his way in the dark. He opened the door to a blaze of blinding torchlight. “Yes? Who is it?” he asked, shielding his eyes.

“You’re needed at the palace, my lord.”

Daniel squinted at the bright light. Two men in blood-red tunics. The king’s servants. He wondered if he was still dreaming. On another night years ago, King Nebuchadnezzar had also sent servants to bring him to the palace in the dark of night. The king had suffered a nightmare and would have executed Daniel and all the other wise men if the Almighty One hadn’t shown Daniel the dream and its meaning. He had been a much younger man, back then. Nebuchadnezzar’s grandson summoned him now.

Daniel rubbed his eyes, struggling to shake o] his sleepiness. “The palace? Why? What’s wrong?”
