IT'S A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS - Lynne Gentry and 4 other authors - One Free Book

Welcome back, dear friend. How did your story for the collection come about? During the pandemic shut-down, a group of my author friends started meeting regularly on zoom. Someone said, “Wouldn’t it cheer everyone up if we wrote a Christmas story?” The rest was history.

My story, MIRACLE ON MAIN STREET, is the fifth in one of my favorite southern small-town series (Mt. Hope Southern Adventures). I’ve always loved the classic Christmas movie, Miracle on 34th Street, and used that movie for my inspiration to create the Christmas parades I remembered from growing up in a small town.

Are these stories connected in some way? If so, how? The stories in this collection are connected in that they all were inspired by a favorite classic Christmas movie.

What are you reading right now? I’m listening to Patti Callahan’s new book ONCE UPON A WARDROBE. It’s a delightful story about C.S. Lewis. And the English narrator is the delicious icing on the cake.

How many other books have you had published? I’ve lost count. Somewhere between 15 and 20.

What is the hardest thing about writing a part of a collection? Our author team of Julie Cantrell, Janyre Tromp, Kelli Stuart, and Allison Pittman worked well together. It’s true that many hands make light work. It was great to have different people using their different strengths. I guess picking the cover was probably the hardest, but once we settled on the midnight blue of an old theater screen, it was easy to settle on the design.

How did collaborating with this team impact you? Writing is such a solitary sport. I’m an extrovert, so having this group of friends who were all interested in the same project was invigorating. We’ll be friends for the rest of our careers now.

What did you want the reader to take away from your story? MIRACLE ON MAIN STREET takes a look at two things. First, I explore the dynamics of a small town and how people in tight knit communities learn to live and work with people who are a little prickly. I think the world would be a better place if all of us learned to love people who are hard to love. But loving difficult people often requires forgiveness. And the second thing this light, funny story explores is really rather heavy. And that’s the idea of forgiveness. Forgiving someone who’s hurt you deeply is easier said than done…and that’s the miracle of Christmas, isn’t it?

Yes, it is. Please give us a peek into your story. Mt. Hope is a dusty west Texas town on the verge of shutting its doors. The few businesses that remain on Main Street are in danger of closing, including Ruthie Crouch’s diner. When the town council decides to make one more stab at revitalizing the economy, the annual Christmas parade is resurrected. But when the Santa they choose is the man who deserted Ruthie and her diner years ago, skillets fly and the whole plan nearly falls apart.

What is the best piece of advice you received as an author? Read. Read. Read. Then write. Write. Write.

DANGEROUS DECEPTIONS - Lisa Harris and Lynne Gentry, plus 7 other authors - One Free Copy of PORT OF ORIGIN

BIO: LISA HARRIS is a Christy Award finalist for Blood Ransom and Vendetta, Christy Award winner for Dangerous Passage, and the winner of the Best Inspirational Suspense Novel for 2011 (Blood Covenant) and 2015 (Vendetta) from Romantic Times. She has over thirty novels and novella collections in print. She and her family have spent almost two decades working as missionaries in Africa. When she's not working she loves hanging out with her family, cooking different ethnic dishes, photography, and heading into the African bush on safari. For more information about her books and life in Africa visit her website at www.lisaharriswrites.com

Welcome back, Lisa. How did your story for the collection come about?
Over a decade ago, Lynne Gentry and I decided to write a medical thriller together. Ghost Heart ended up being the first book in this series. It’s a story about transplant tourism and a mother’s love for a child that makes her willing to do anything to save her. We finally published that novel in 2017, with plans for a second in the series, and promises that it wouldn’t take another decade to write it. Interestingly enough, we’d just finished the second book, Port of Origin, a story about a virus unleashed on a medical ship, when the pandemic our world is facing today hit the headlines. Lethal Outbreak, our story in this collection is actually a prequel to Port of Origin, but can be read in any order. It delves deeper into how Aiden Ballinger and Rachel Allen—one of the main characters from Port of Origin—meet. And then sets the scene for the next book in the series, Death Triangle. When I was asked to join this romantic suspense collection, Lynne Gentry and I decided that this story would be a perfect fit and introduction to our medical thriller series.

Are these stories connected in some way? If so, how?
The stories in this box set are all romantic suspense novels, but are not connected. Most of the stories are stand alone, though may be a part of a series and is a great way to get to know some new best-selling and award-winning authors.

What are you reading right now?
I just started reading Secrets She Knew, by D.L. Woods, one of the other authors in the collection.

How many other books have you had published?
I’ve published about forty books, mainly romantic suspense and medical thrillers—my favorite genres!

What is the hardest thing about writing a part of a collection?
Since the storylines in the books in this collection aren’t connected, we didn’t have to worry about that angle, but there is still a lot of behind the scenes work that goes on. We’ve spent a lot of time over the past few months brainstorming the cover, discussing marketing strategy (we want to make the USA Today best-seller list), writing interviews, building a website and video, formatting the stories, and the list really goes on and on. I’ve never been a part of a collection like this before, but while it has been a lot of work, I’ve loved working with these other authors.

How did collaborating with this team impact you?
Honestly, I’ve been impacted the most in ways that have nothing to do with writing. We meet monthly on Zoom, share prayer requests, pray for and encourage each other. I hadn’t expected this, and it has been such a blessing!

Please give us a peek into your story.
Lethal Outbreak:  Virus hunter Aiden Ballinger believes the source of the lethal outbreak that decimated a remote Tibetan village came from disturbing the permafrost. Desperate to rebury it before it buries the world, Aiden enlists Rachel Scott, a beautiful epidemiologist. But while Aiden and Rachel pursue the cure—and their feelings for each other—someone is hunting them. Whoever wants them dead will not stop until they are silenced.

What is the best piece of advice you received as an author?
Sit down and write. The journey is full of ups and downs, but write and learn, write some more, and never give up.

POINT OF ORIGIN - Lisa Harris and Lynne Gentry - One Free Book

Dear Readers, I’ve been eagerly awaiting this second book in a series by two of my dearest friends. Their books are powerfully spiritual suspense novels about true-to-life events. I’ve known about both of these books while they were planning and writing them. Little did they know that this book would release when a world-wide pandemic was in full force, which makes this story almost prophetic. I haven’t received my copy yet, but it will go to the very top of my to-be-read pile. You won’t want to miss it.

Welcome, Lisa and Lynne. This is your second collaboration. How did this story come about?
We’ve always been fans of Mercy Ships and have followed their work for years. One day Lynne was scrolling through her Facebook feed and saw a Mercy Ship story about a boy suffering from a disease that had morphed his body into the shape of a Z. His before and after story was amazing. Because volunteers had dared to bring medical care to a third-world country, this boy had received the gift of straight legs. While all of this good was going on, pirates were really upping their attack game on passing ships and a deadly Ebola outbreak had made its way to the States and set off global panic. The three elements collided and PORT OF ORIGIN was the result.

James and I have loved the work of Mercy Ships since the beginning. Another dear friend of mine was on one of the first two. She shared miraculous stories that God brought about for their team. How did you feel as a team because your story so closely resembles what is going on right now?
The concept of a killer virus on a medical ship was actually fleshed out in a 2009 book series proposal we were shopping. When we didn’t get the opportunity to finish the series, we set the project aside. In 2017 we released the first book in the series (Ghost Heart). That book did so well we decided to write the rest of the series. Due to life setbacks, we didn’t finish the book until December of 2019. Last year, Covid-19 wasn’t even a blip on the map. All of our research was based on a combination of the 2014 Ebola outbreak and pure speculation. Imagine our surprise when, just a month after the book was finished, we started hearing of a rogue virus causing cruise ships to port with hundreds of ill passengers. The day the military medical ship sailed into New York City’s port to rescue the dying, we thought we would cry.

One way our story differs from our current world crisis is that we believe in hope. No matter how dark any of our struggles seem, we believe God is sovereign and He is in control. Port of Origin, while eerily close to the times in which we are living, is filled with wonderful, brave people, and lots of hope.

How did collaborating with this team impact you?
LYNNE: First, we decided we wanted our hero and heroine to each have a distinctive voice. The easiest way to achieve their separate voices was for each of us to choose which one we wanted to write. Next, it made sense for Lisa to write the scenes involving African characters since she lives there. Because of my connections to the medical world through my daughter and my husband, I did the research and writing for those scenes.
LISA: Once we decided on who was going to write which characters, it allowed us to focus on that part of the story line, and one each specific character’s backstory and personalities. Watching the story come together was really exciting.

What is the hardest thing about writing as a team?
When we began to delve into the research, we were really surprised by what we found. For example, it was sobering to discover that vast amounts of money have been made by the stripping of Africa’s natural resources, but little of that financial gain has trickled down to Africa’s impoverished population. As individual writers, Lisa and I don’t always see things the same way. But in the give and take of coming to a workable solution, we’ve both been surprised by how much we’ve grown. We’ve really come to appreciate each other’s strengths. And we’ve both come to realize that we need a really good editor because neither of us will win any awards for grammar.

What are you reading right now?
LYNNE: I always have a book going. I just finished JoJo Moyes’ Giver of the Stars. Such a fascinating and rich story set during the Depression. I love Paulette Jiles and have recently finished News of the World and The Color of Lightning.
LISA: I’ve just started James R. Hannibal’s The Gryphon Heist.

I always love to see what book the authors I interview are reading. They give me ideas about what books I want to read. How did you choose your characters’ names?
We love our character names to have meaning. We do a lot of searching through name lists and when something rings a bell, we look up the meaning. For example, our hero Josiah is a broken man. We picked this name because it means Jehovah heals. Sometimes we love to honor people we know and use part of their name. When you read our books, you’ll find them sprinkled with tributes to people we love.

Would you want to work on another book together?
We are. We’ve got two more books planned for this year. Lethal Outbreak releases in the Dangerous Deceptions box set with 7 other new books by award-winning authors on October 13. We hope to release Death Triangle, the fourth book in the series, by the end of 2020 or early 2021.

What do you want to tell us about the book?
Two fathers go to war to save their children. If the woman in the middle can’t convince them to work together, the winner of this conflict will be a deadly virus intent on destroying the world.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Off the Coast of Cameroon, Central Africa
Since ancient times, the sea had been generous. Tuna. Sardines. Ocean prawns big as a man’s hand. But those days of plenty had vanished in the wake of the foreign trawlers whose illegal fishing practices were destroying the coastline’s natural resources. Dabir watched the moon slip behind a veil of clouds, leaving him and his brothers to navigate the vast Atlantic in an eerie shroud of darkness. From his position at the end of the boat, he could see little beyond the shadowy silhouettes of his father and his two younger brothers.

He stopped rowing for a moment as he waited for the sharp tug of the nylon fishing net that would signal the night’s first catch. A wave smashed against the side of the narrow craft, reminding him of the dangers of straying too far into the open waters. He searched for the light of the trawlers that swept the sea’s floor with their ghostlike underwater lights while their wide metal jaws devoured everything in sight, but tonight there was no sign of the floodlights used to lure the fish into their nets. Which meant the deadly boats could be anywhere, trying to avoid the overworked coastal patrols searching in vain for those illegal vessels that strayed into the zone reserved for the smaller vessels. All Dabir could do was pray his father’s boat steered clear of the stealthy trawlers that prowled the darkness. And pray that they would catch enough fish to feed their family another day.

FLYING FOSSILS - Lynne Gentry - One Free Print Book or Ebook

Dear Readers, Lynne Gentry has been a dear friend for a long time. We share a love of writing novels, and we’ve often served as a confidant and prayer warrior for each other. I’m thrilled to share this book with you today.

Welcome back, Lynne. Tell us about your salvation experience.
Growing up going to church every time the doors were open gave me an understanding of religion. But it was in the wide-open spaces of a summer camp that I came to love the Lord.

You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?
That’s a tough one. I love the strong heroines of Kate Quinn. The romance of Becky Wade. The intriguing character arcs of Kellie Coates Gilbert. And the heart-pounding action of Lisa Harris…and I’d squeeze you in too, Lena.

I’d love to retreat with all of those women. Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.
My training is on the stage, so I love it whenever I have an opportunity to stand behind a microphone and share the faithfulness of God and His unconditional love.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?
I am a closet perfectionist. Not long after I published Walking Shoes I began to get emails that said the story was good but all of the typos made it hard to read. I was mortified. Typos? How could that be? Three editors had poured over that book. Upon further investigation, I discovered that somehow during the formatting process the number 2 had been liberally sprinkled over the entire manuscript. In the end, all I could do was swallow my pride, admit I’d made a mistake, and offer to replace the glitchy manuscripts.

People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
Better get started. It’s a lot of work.

That’s the truth. Tell us about the featured book.
Twenty-five years ago, the Slocum women buried their close mother-daughter relationship in the Frio River and went their separate ways. Sara and Charlotte pretend their weekly long-distance call fulfills their family obligation until Sara falls and breaks her hip. Now Charlotte must drop everything and fly to Texas. Charlotte’s short-term care-giving plans are dashed when she realizes her aging mother needs long-term care. While Sara struggles to regain her independence, Charlotte grapples with the impossible task of juggling a high-pressure job, a rebellious teenage daughter, and a slightly demented mother.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Sara: An Independent Mother
As usual, you’re being overly dramatic, Charlotte Ann.” I hug the phone receiver between my ear and shoulder, stretch the cord across the kitchen, then snag a butcher knife from the wooden block. “Putting a few dents in a lawnmower is hardly a reason for me to give up my ranch.”

“Mother, you totaled a two-thousand-dollar riding mower!” My daughter’s anger crackles on the line. “What if you’d been hurt?”

Contrary to Charlotte’s insinuations, I’m not some fragile, rusty weathervane easily spun by the changing winds that sweep through these Texas Hill Country valleys. As per the invariant order of things, my feet have become deeply rooted in the rocky soil. I’m attached to this land tighter than the fossils that cling to the banks of the Frio River.

For forty-two years, I’ve been the mother. Charlotte the child. Simple laws govern our parent-child relationship. I’ll admit, there are rules that allow for an orderly transition of power, if that sad time should ever come. But, I’ll not be pushed into speeding things along simply because it suits Charlotte.

Trading roles with my daughter now would be like winter unexpectedly giving way to fall.  Buds waiting to bloom would shrivel and die. There’d be no crops to harvest. Birds would never head north. Nothing would ever be right again. I know, because twenty-three years ago I was forced to go against the expected order of life. It was a tragedy that has ruined everything.

“Mother, did you hear me?” Somewhere in Charlotte’s aggravation, I hear the little girl I used to know, the one who sat beside me on the piano bench…frustrated that she was having difficulty mastering “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”…worried that she never would.

I shift the receiver and whack a Bartlett pear into tiny pieces. “Don’t worry, I’ll pay you back.”

“You know this is not about the money!” Charlotte barks.

“Then why did you bring it up?” I ignore my daughter’s huge sigh and slide a piece of fruit through the bars of my ringneck parrot’s cage. “Here you go, Polygon.”

My bird waddles his perch shouting, “God save the Queen.”

“Loyal and smart.” I say as I wiggle the pear enticingly. “You need more roughage in your diet, my feathered friend. Can’t have you getting backed up again.”

“Mother, could you please stop talking to that blasted bird and finish our conversation?”

Polygon hops off his perch, wraps his claws around my arthritic knuckle, and begins to peck at the fruit. Touch is the sensation of touch I miss more than conversation. Which is strange, considering the complaints I lodged with Martin when I felt worn out by the constant pawing of third graders. Guess that goes to show how easy it is to take something for granted until it’s gone.

I release the fruit and Polygon waddles toward his seed dish with a full mouth.  “At least my bird listens.”

Charlotte sighs. “I bought the riding mower to help you. The doctor said the strain of pushing a mower over that huge yard is putting your heart at risk.” Her continued exasperation rattles me more than her exaggeration. “Obviously, power equipment isn’t the answer.”

“Anyone could’ve confused all those fancy pedals.”

“You’re seventy-two, Mother.” She always manages to cite my age before overstepping the boundaries we’ve set in place. “There’s no shame in admitting that you can no longer keep up with three hundred acres of rugged hill country.”

I wipe the window with the sleeve of my robe and gaze at the pasture dotted with patches of this spring’s fading bluebonnets. “No one was hurt.”

“This time.” The strain in her voice is as irritating as a mandatory fire drill.

“You want me to let the place grow up around my ears?”

“Of course not.” She sighs to emphasize the stress I’m obviously adding to her very busy day. “But since you refuse to consider a move, I have to hire you some help.”

I bite my tongue. Silence won’t end this conversation with Charlotte, but it won’t hurt her to believe it’s the only defense I have left.

“I’m worried about you, Mother.”

Charlotte’s deep inhalation is my cue to take a seat because the recounting of my shortcomings that she feels honor bound to recite has grown into a rather long list. “In the last six months, you’ve flushed your dentures down the toilet.”

“Just the lowers.”

“You got lost on the way to town.”

“Winnie found me and hauled me back home.” I add, “Long before dark.”

“I hate to think what would have happened if you hadn’t run out of gas along her mail route.”
Overstated dramatics always harden my resolve. Ask any child who was unlucky enough to have me as their teacher. “No law against trying a change of scenery.”

“You don’t like change, Mother,” my daughter snips. “That’s why we can’t seem to have an honest and productive conversation about your future.”

I sink into the chair and rest my elbow on the table. “Just because you think the old gray mare ain’t what she used to be…” I cringe at that I’ve resorted to using slang. “…that doesn’t mean I want to leave my home of forty-five years and move to Washington, D.C., Charlotte Ann.”

Surely it wasn’t that many years ago that Martin and I ignored a weathered No Trespassing sign, climbed an old, barbed-wire fence, shed our clothes, and jumped from a thirty-foot bluff with the abandon of two people with more nerve than sense. The moment our naked bodies slid into the crystal-clear water, we knew the Fossil Ridge Ranch was meant to be our little piece of heaven.
I’ve loved and lost on this land. I can’t bear to leave any of it.

“I know this is hard,” Charlotte whispers.

“How could you know? You only come home once a year.”

“Mother, that’s not true. I’ve flown to Texas four times since Thanksgiving. And if you don’t start cooperating, I’m going to have to come home in April as well.”

Without following the school calendar dates scramble in my head. “Four times?”

“Yes,” she says. “I have a job, a teenager, and a marriage I’m trying to keep together. I can’t keep dropping everything to…”

Her pause is my cue to say something that will soothe her conscience, to grant a pass that lets her off the hook. That’s been our unspoken agreement for twenty-some years. I don’t get a pass. She doesn’t get a pass. That way neither one of us has to forgive the other. Slocums are like that. Charlotte may have taken on that fancy McCandless surname when she married a good-for-nothing playboy, but roots deep as ours are tougher than weeds to yank out.

Charlotte’s quiet. But I can hear her ripping the tiny gold treble clef back and forth on the thin silver chain around her neck. She’s gearing up to issue my ultimatum. I suppose I should take some consolation in the fact that she still wears the little trinket I gave her years ago. Perhaps we’re not completely lost to each other.

“If you want to stay on the Fossil Ridge, then you’ll have to give this new guy a chance.”

“He’s already mowed over the bluebonnets in my front yard. They’re beautiful this year, but he cut them down before they could seed. Next thing you know, he’ll be toppin’ my myrtles.”

“I’ll text him to be more careful. Please, for my peace of mind, can you just give this new guy a try?” Charlotte’s breathing is becoming more rapid. Any minute she’ll blow, unable to leave well enough alone. “That’s all I ask.”

“That’s all?” Anger pumps through my veins and I spring from the chair, a taut rubber band aimed at the class bully. “If you call stripping my independence guarding my heart, Charlotte Ann, I’ll take my chances with high cholesterol and a push mower.”

I hang up the phone with a decisive slam and march to the counter. Sticky juice oozes from what remains of the mutilated mound of fruit.

Whatever happened to family taking care of family? My neighbor LaVera’s grown son takes care of her. Bo isn’t pressuring his mother to leave her place, nor does he pawn off his responsibilities on hired help.

I swallow a bite of the vanilla-sweet flesh then poke a sliver through the bars of the birdcage. “Charlotte won’t be satisfied until I sign over complete control of my life.”

My bird abandons his preening and snatches his breakfast with his bright red beak.

“Sweet Moses,” I snap. “Say something, Polygon!”

I know better than to encourage this feathered chatterbox to speak with his mouth full, but this traitorous deed by Charlotte has me in such a stew I’m willing to risk the undoing of my bird’s etiquette training.

For once, Polygon behaves and remains silent. Although pleased the hours I’ve invested in my parrot’s behavior has finally begun to pay off, I admit that at this very moment a word of encouragement, even a feathery nod would be a comfort. How many years has it been since I’ve had someone in my corner?

More than I care to count.

The screaming kettle gyrates above the gas flame. “We’ll show Charlotte who can still take care of themselves, won’t we, Polygon?”

I pour boiling water over a twice-used tea bag then wait for the water to brown. It’s maddening that my life has come to recycling tea bags. Martin and I had planned to spend our golden years spoiling a passel of grandchildren. I shuffle to the fridge. My gnarled finger traces the photograph that curls beneath the World’s Best Teacher magnet stuck to the door.

The little beauty sitting beside me and Charlotte is my only grandchild. Aria was eight when this photo was taken nearly five years ago. I haven’t seen this little lioness in months. Busy teenager stuff, her mother claims. But I can’t help but wonder if Ari has also outgrown her need for me. After all, she’s probably taller than me by now, and well-past the age of appreciating anything I could teach her. And I’d planned to teach her so much. Her times tables. Piano scales. How to tell a barn swallow from a sparrow. The best way to free a fossil from the limestone that lines the river.

Some dreams are best forgotten.

I return to my tea, splurge and add a cube of sugar, then lift the rose-patterned porcelain cup to my lips.

My apple-green bird tilts his head, his beady eyes assessing my brewing storm. I blow steam in his direction. “You won’t leave me, will you, Polygon?”

“C’mere.” He waddles the length of his perch. “Pretty girl.”

I rest the cup on a saucer and stick my finger through the wires and stroke the soft down above his beak. “If only family were as loyal.”

I’d give anything to have my Martin pat my fanny as I wash up the supper dishes. Or have my ambitious Caroline hug my neck after I admire her work. Or have my sweet Charlotte crawl into my lap and beg for another song on the piano.

“Thank you for sticking it out, Polygon.” Through tears, I look my bird in the eye.  “Once I send Charlotte’s new hire packing, we’ll have our life back.”

“Be nice.” Polygon gives my finger a peck.

“Traitor.” I recoil at his siding with Charlotte. “This has to be done, Polygon. And, no matter what anyone tries to tell me, I’m still the woman to do it.”

GHOST HEART - Lisa Harris and Lynne Gentry - One Free Book

Dear Readers, I have been eagerly awaiting this day. Both Lisa and Lynne have been dear friends of mine for years. I’ve been privileged by God to help each of them along their writing journey, and both of them have an amazing writing voice. Together, they’re more powerful. I’ve known about this book for a long time, and I knew it would have to be published someday. That day is here.

Welcome, Lisa and Lynne. How did this book come about?
LYNNE: Just over a decade ago, a newspaper article featured a picture of a terrified albino. The fear in his pale eyes caught my attention. As I read about the horrors these fragile people faced in Africa, I couldn’t believe such evil existed in the world. I contacted Lisa, who lives in Mozambique, and asked her to investigate.

LISA: Until Lynne wrote to me about the article, I’d never heard of these barbaric crimes. But after doing some further research, I discovered that the atrocities against albinos had been going on for years. Once we learned that the witch doctors targeted the pale skin and hair of this minority to make good luck charms and potions, we knew we had to tell their story.

Tell us about the book’s cover and what makes it unique.
We were looking for something that conveyed both the medical aspects of the story and its African setting. The heartbeat and the baobab tree ended up being the perfect combination as well as setting the tone we were looking for. And when you read the book, they will become even more significant.

Please explain and differentiate between what’s fact and fiction in the book.
While the actual story line is complete fiction, the things that happen in this story could happen. Albinos really are hunted for the “magic” in their skin. There really is a black market for organ parts. People really do go to third world countries for transplants when they are out of options. We took these facts, then weaved them into a medical thriller.

How much research did you have to do for this book?
There was a long list of topics we had to delve into and study: Albinism. The transplant tourism trade. Heart conditions. Pharmaceutical testing. Piloting small planes. Organ transplants/rejections. American Embassy procedures in an African country.

Neither of us were experts on any of this so we spent hours tracking down people who were. It helped tremendously that Lisa lives in Africa. Her experiences in a third-world country lend a tremendous amount of authenticity to the project.

What are some of the most interesting things you found about this subject that you weren’t able to use in the story?
While we didn’t shy away from our depiction of the gruesome treatment of albinos, we spared our readers tons of the terrible details we read on the subject. The power of superstition is strong. Only the power of truth is stronger.

What inspired and surprised you while you were writing the book?
We believe that beneath the color of our skin we are all alike, but this belief was tested when we had to write from the POV of a terrified mother of a cursed child. What surprised us was how much she was willing to do to save her child. This realization really drove home the platitude we spouted so easily and opened our eyes to the fact that you really can’t know how another person is thinking or feeling if you’re not willing to wear their skin, so to speak.

What do you hope the reader takes away from the story?
Because while we live in a fallen world, we believe it is possible to bring light into the darkness. The journey of these characters challenged us, comforted us, and pushed us to live life more courageously. But most of all, writing this story opened our hearts to wanting to do our part to create a world that loves no matter what the color of our skin, education, financial status, or nationality. And reminded us that God's light truly does shine, even in the darkest places. We pray this story will do the same for each person who reads it.

What is the next project you’re working on?
LYNNE: I’m finishing up the last book in my Mt. Hope Southern Adventures series. This romantic comedy (Baby Shoes) wraps up (for now) the quirky life of Leona Harper. After that, I’m doing edits on a Young Adult sci-fi I can’t wait to release.

LISA: I’m currently working on two novels. A Love Inspired Suspense set in Rio and the Amazon, and a new stand-alone suspense novel for Revell. Both will be released next year.

What do you do when you have to get away from the story for a while?
LYNNE: I have several diversions – four grands under the age of four that I love spending time with. I’ve also trained a medical therapy dog that I love to take to visit the cancer wards at a major medical center.

LISA: I love hanging out with my family, cooking different ethnic dishes, photography, and heading into the African bush on safari.

That sounds like fun. Please give us the first page of the book.
Makuru, Tanzania
According to legend, their kind could never die. When they grew old, they simply vanished from this world, like smoke from the cooking fire that snakes above the spindly baobab trees and slithers away.

But not all legends are true.

Or so Jeme prayed.

Squinting through the shimmering rays of the grueling African sun, Jeme balanced the bowl of dried beans on her head and pressed through the crowded marketplace. A maze of narrow paths twisted around her, each lined with dozens of sellers who sat in cramped wooden shops displaying wares on rickety tables.

The smell of curried meat roasting on the grills mingled with the pungent odor of dried fish baking in the late afternoon heat. Jeme’s empty stomach roiled as she hurried past piles of tomatoes, peppers, oranges, and colorful bags of spices. If only she could escape the whispers competing with the buzz of the buyers and sellers. Whispers that spoke of the magical powers of albino blood spilled across the brown earth, and of potions that could bring untold wealth.

I’m very eager to read the rest of the book. I’ve only heard the half that Lynne wrote. How can readers find you on the Internet?
LYNNE: I love hearing from readers.

LISA:

Thank you so much for letting us stop by!!

VALLEY OF DECISION - Lynne Gentry - One Free Book

Bio: Lynne Gentry has written for numerous publications and is a professional acting coach, theater director, and playwright with several full-length musicals and a Chicago children’s theater curriculum to her credit. She likes to write stories that launch modern women into ancient adventures, such as The Carthage Chronicles series (Healer of Carthage, Return to Exile, and Valley of Decision). Gentry is also an inspirational speaker and dramatic performer who loves spending time with her family and medical therapy dog.

Dear Readers, Lynne lives not very far from me, and she’s a dear friend. In addition to both being novelists, we share a background in live theater as directors and playwrights. Her time-travel novels have amazed me. I had thought that there couldn’t be a Christian time-travel novel that I could suspend disbelieve and accept. But I was wrong. I was privileged to read this book for endorsement. As with the first two novels, the historical authenticity blew me away, and her characters walked into my heart and took over. I’m eager for her next series to see the light of day.

Welcome back, Lynne. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?
So good to be with you and your readers again, Lena. We’ve talked about spiritual themes before and you and I both love to write about regrets, injustice, and the victory over both that only the Lord provides.

What other books of yours are coming out soon?
Valley of Decision finishes up the three books in The Carthage Chronicles series. I’ve loved writing this tale which is loosely based on the life of the real third-century Christian martyr, Cyprianus Thascius. It will be hard to leave these characters I’ve grown to love behind, but I’m starting a new series. I can’t yet discuss it, but I can’t wait for my readers to meet my new cast and come along with them on another wild adventure.

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?
I was blessed to be able to do some devotional writing for Stephen Arterburn, the founder of Women of Faith. I’ve always admired the original team of incredible women he put together: Shelia Walsh, Nicole Johnson, Luci Swindoll, Marilyn Meberg and the petite stick of dynamite Patsy Clairmont. Having coffee with any of these gals would be a tremendous treat. However, if I had to pick one, I’d have to say that Patsy Clairmont has been a special inspiration to me. Overcoming a lifetime of tremendous fear, Patsy has gone on to do powerful things for the Kingdom of God. I only hope I’m half as brave as this faithful little firecracker.

I love the Women of Faith ministry. What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?
After spending two years immersed in the life of the wealthy Roman lawyer Cyprianus Thascius, I’d have to say that I would LOVE to meet him in person. I have so many unanswered questions. I’d also love to thank him. It was because of his courage the good news of Christ was not extinguished. I’m always amazed at the people the Lord taps upon the shoulder. From poor fishermen to the wealthiest and most educated, all of us have the potential to make a difference.

That is so true. How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?
I hate rejection on any level. That I am still in the publishing business is proof of the Lord’s sense of humor. I’ve even kept a file of my rejections that’s almost an inch thick. An interesting thing happened along this publishing journey though. As the rejection file grew thicker, so did my skin. I knew I had been called by God to write. It is my talent. It is my gift. To stop writing would be to deny the power of God to use these gifts to His glory. To the discouraged I say boldly, if you feel called, keep writing.

Tell us about the featured book.
Valley of Decision was the hardest book in the series to write and yet it was the most rewarding. I knew what the ending had to be and I dreaded it. I also wanted to give my readers a different taste of the third century. I wanted to keep the plague ever before them, but I also wanted to showcase more of the persecution. This last part of the story required me to go deep into the legal and political struggles of the day, which included a lot of injustice, which grates on me. I can’t stand it when things are unfair. So many decisions the characters faced in this last story were unfair: broken family relationships, conflicts between going and staying, or choosing between doing what was easy or what was right. In the end, I hope I managed to portray that none of us can make this journey on our own. We need each other.

I didn’t think you could write a third book that I could accept, but your ending satisfied me on many levels. Please give us the first page of the book for my readers.
“When unattended wounds succumb to infection”—Dr. Lisbeth Hastings advanced the slide in the Power-Point presentation, and the raw end of a severed leg appeared on the screen—“amputation of the gangrenous extremity may be the only way to stop a deadly pathogen from progressing to the body’s core.” She was not surprised by the hand that shot up.

The ambitious resident with thick glasses and freshly pressed scrubs was always looking for an opportunity to prove his brilliance. Debating whether to give him an excuse to derail her lecture, Lisbeth took a deep breath. “Your question, Dr. Gingrich?”

The surgical resident pressed his glasses to his nose. “What about IV Vancomycin or Zosyn?”

Lisbeth kept her expression neutral, but inside she was cringing. Looking at Dr. Gingrich was like looking at herself nearly twenty years ago. Self-serving. Terrified. And determined to control everyone and every outcome. What a waste of precious time and energy. Oh, the things she would tell that desperate girl if she ever got the chance to go back in time again.

She suppressed her desire to take the kid aside and shake some sense into him. Her job was not to coddle young doctors but to make them into quick-thinking surgeons able to face anything the operating room threw at them.

Thank you, Lynne, for sharing this new book with us. I know that those of my readers who have read the first two are anxious to read this one.

And for readers new to this series, I recommend that you read all of them in order. The good thing about that is that you won't have to wait a long time between reading them. You can go straight from one to the other.

Do you ever wonder where authors get their ideas for their novels? Here's where Lynne got the idea for this series.

RETURN TO EXILE - Lynne Gentry - One Free Book

Dear Readers, Lynne is a dear, dear friend of mine. She and Lisa Tawn Bergren taught me that there indeed can be time travel novels that are Christian. Lynne and I both have a strong drama background which helps us create novels with just the right amount of setting and living, breathing characters. I have waited anxiously for the release of Return to Exile, the second book in her The Carthage Chronicles series. It pulled me through the hidden portal with her heroine, and I walked beside her through the book. I believe you will, too. Now I’m anxiously awaiting the next book in this series.

Bio: Lynne Gentry has written for numerous publications and is a professional acting coach, theater director, and playwright with several full-length musicals and a Chicago children’s theater curriculum to her credit.

Her love for writing stories was born while growing up on a Kansas dairy farm as she longed for adventure and dreamt of traveling to exotic places. She likes to write stories that launch modern women into ancient adventures, such as Healer of Carthage (2014), which was the first in The Carthage Chronicles series. Return to Exile is the second, and Valley of Decision is expected September 22, 2015.

Gentry is also an inspirational speaker and dramatic performer who loves spending time with her family and medical therapy dog.

Welcome back, Lynne. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I grew up tethered to a Kansas dairy farm. I longed for adventure. I wanted to visit exotic places and meet famous people. Imaginary trips became my escape from rural isolation. In an instant, my mind could magically transform a tree house into a medieval castle, hay bales into a pioneer fort, or a dank root cellar into a time portal that could transport me into the ancient civilizations of the Bible. In my make-believe world, I was bold, brave, and beautiful. The heroes were handsome and romantic. Humanity’s fate hung in the balance. Good always triumphed over evil. And in the end, I left the past in far better shape than I found it.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
I feel I’ve been blessed with many happy days. Most of them include family memories: marriage to a wonderful man, the birth of two beautiful children, their marriages to incredible people, and the blessed arrival of grandchildren. But one special day also sticks out in my mind. I was on the verge of giving up on writing when my agent called to say I’d sold not one, but SIX books to Howard Books. That day still makes me smile. It wasn’t because of anything I had done but because of the faithfulness of God.

How has being published changed your life?
Besides the constant pressure of meeting deadlines (writing deadlines, editing deadlines, marketing deadlines), I’ve had a profound realization of the responsibility that comes with writing. Knowing that people are actually reading my spin on the world fuels my desire to bring glory to God.

What are you reading right now?

Besides the CBA novels I’m reading for endorsements, I am reading Tallgrass by Sandra Dallas, Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin, and Thief of Glory by Sigmund Brouwer.

What is your current work in progress?
I just finished first round edits on the final book in The Carthage Chronicles series. Valley of Decision releases in September 2015, and I’m excited for readers to get a peek at the conclusion to this epic tale.

What would be your dream vacation?
I am dying to go to the Mediterranean, especially Carthage, Tunisia. That part of the world is a bit too dangerous, even for me, so I would be happy to rent a villa in Rome for a month.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
The settings choose me. This series had to be set in Carthage, Tunisia, because that’s where the actual third-century plague took place.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
I would choose Meryl Streep. I believe she is one of the most versatile actors of our day. She creates unique characters every time she comes on stage. I would love to pick her brain and discover the secrets to her process.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
I love socializing. Writing is such a solitary sport. I leap at every chance to leave my imaginary friends and meet real people for lunch or a cup of coffee. I’m also a walker. Love to take my Great Pyrenees for a spin around the block. I’ve spent several months training my dog, and he is finally a certified medical therapy dog. It gives me a great deal of pleasure to take him to the hospitals. He brings so much joy and relief from suffering for the people there.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
Writing a saga that continues over the course of six books requires serious plotting. I’m NOT a plotter. I’ve written myself into some sticky corners. To get out of the mess is like a chess game. One wrong move and the whole thing comes undone. Getting in there and moving the story and words around is the best way to tackle those fears.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Read. Write. Read. Write. Read. Then read some more.

Tell us about the featured book.
Return to Exile is the second book in The Carthage Chronicles. In this story, Dr. Lisbeth Hastings has been home for six years. But when she learns the shocking truth of what her husband faces in the third century, she makes a bold choice and decides to return. But going back is never easy.

Please give us the first page of the book.
“Master, you’re in no shape for today’s senate session.” Pytros bustled into the council chambers laden with all of his writing supplies and a pitcher of water. “You should have canceled.”

“Your lack of forward thinking is why you will live and die a lowly scribe.” Aspasius limped to his place at the curule seat.

Pytros carefully spread his utensils. “I don’t know what you hope to achieve. The order has been issued.” With a peevish look upon his face, he poured a glass of water and held it out. “But has word of Valerian’s edict reached the ears of the senate? That is what I must know.” Ignoring Pytros’s pout, Aspasius took the glass and plopped onto the ivory chair with curved bronze legs. He wanted to be well-situated in the bowl-shaped stool before he allowed the chamber doors opened. These days his physical comfort was hard to come by. He was either in desperate need of a drink of water or access to a chamber pot. And most disturbing of all, the feeling had disappeared from his foot. A fact the power-hungry vultures waiting to take his place must never discover.

He downed the water, then gave his slave the empty glass. “Knowledge is power, and I intend to make certain I always possess the bulk of it.”
