ONE FOR THE ROAD - Mary Ellis - One Free Book

Welcome back, Mary. Let’s do some fun questions first. What song most closely resembles your life? I guess that would be “The Long and Winding Road” by the Beatles. I have reinvented myself many times during my lifetime. Even my name was changed not long after my birth. And talk about careers! Good grief. I’m sticking with my current—an author. Nobody knows when you’re goofing off in your office, playing Solitaire.

When I need a quick break from the writing, I do play Solitaire. Of course, it’s always when my husband comes by the office and teases me for “goofing off.” Do you have a favorite Bible verse? And why is it a favorite? My favorite changes often. With what I’m going through now in life, it’s Psalm 121:1-2. I will lift up my mine eyes to the hills, from whence shall my help come.

What is the one thing you wish you could go back and change in your life? I truly wish I hadn’t worried so much about other people’s opinions. I spent way too much time garnering praise or at least, acceptance. At my current ripe, old age, I endeavor to please the Lord (first), myself (second) and my husband (third). If anybody else likes my books, my politics, or my new dress/haircut it’s gravy on the meatloaf!

You definitely aren’t old. What is the most important characteristic for a good friend to have? Loyalty. A good friend must be loyal, first and foremost. We don’t turn our backs on best friends, no matter how difficult the situation. And that loyalty goes in both directions. It can’t be one-sided.

That is so true, but often lacking in our society today. What extracurricular activities did you participate in when you were in school? I played girls basketball because I was tall (I was terrible!) along with volleyball and tennis. I was much better at the latter two, but still not great. The only thing I was good at was sitting in my treehouse, reading a book. Reading was my escape, my passion.

I can’t remember a time in my life when books weren’t an important part. Before my parents could afford to buy books, the library was my favorite place to go. What is your favorite movie of all times? That would be Fried Green Tomatoes with Jessica Tandy, Kathy Bates, Mary Louise Parker and Mary Stuart Masterson. I loved the dual plot between current day and the past, and the marvelous friendship between women. I watch that movie every time it’s on.

I love that one, too. Tell us about why you wrote this book. I wrote this book because I love traveling around the country, being a tourist. So if I’m writing a cozy mystery about a travel writer, there’s no better place to find a body than on a tour. Research for this story was great fun, at least before the Covid lock-downs.

Please give us the first page of the book.

‘There it is!’ Jill exclaimed as they passed a bright blue road sign. ‘“Welcome to Kentucky – the Blue Grass State”. I’m so excited I could spit.’

Michael Erikson, her videographer sidekick, took his eyes off the road long enough to scowl. ‘Don’t you dare! I just had this car washed and detailed. What’s so exciting about the countryside of Kentucky? We’re talkin’ grandma rocking on every porch and pickup trucks driving like an Indy race.’

‘Sounds like the perfect spot for a travel piece.’ Jill rubbed her stomach with a circular motion. ‘I can almost taste the flapjacks, corn pone and deep-fried everything now.’

‘You don’t even know what corn pone is.’ Michael slugged his cold coffee with a grimace.

‘No, but I aim to find out. This could be my big chance to advance beyond travel features and blogging to the news service. We have ten expense-paid days to discover why thousands of tourists flock to bourbon country every year.’

‘You don’t even like whiskey. You drink grocery store wine out of a cardboard box.’ Michael held his gut while he laughed.

‘This will be bourbon, not whiskey.’ Jill pulled down the vanity mirror to check her teeth for remnants of lunch.

He shook his head. ‘Bourbon is a type of whiskey. If we’re doing this, partner, start doing your homework.’

‘I intend to, tonight. I would’ve already if the boss hadn’t handed us this at the last minute. Besides, my wine comes in bottles with real corks.’ Jill lifted her chin with indignation.

‘Yeah, right. I stopped at your apartment last Christmas, remember?’

‘Of course I do. What woman could forget a pair of lime-green, six-toed socks?’

‘What can I say – they were on sale. We’re on the outskirts of Louisville. Better program the GPS with the hotel’s address.’

‘We’re not staying at some boring chain hotel.’ Jill produced a cat-in-the-cream grin.

‘I get the feeling I’m not going to like this.’ Michael rubbed the back of his neck.

‘Why on earth would we stay in Louisville when the charming town of Roseville is close to two distilleries? If you recall, bourbon distilleries are why we’re here.’

‘This motel in Roseville . . . is it one of those turquoise mom-and-pop’s with a soda machine permanently out of order?’

‘Absolutely not. We’re staying at Sweet Dreams Bed and Breakfast. The online pictures looked gorgeous, truly elegant and historical.’

‘In other words flowery wallpaper, lace doilies, and threadbare rugs.’

‘Have you ever even been to a B and B?’

‘Yup, remember my ex-fiancée, Cindy? She took me to one in the Alleghany Mountains. Each night I expected Jack Nicholson to axe his way through the door. I didn’t sleep a wink.’

‘If anyone was going to take an axe to your head, it would have been Cindy.’ As usual, her insult had zero effect on him. Jill shook her head. ‘This place serves a gourmet breakfast each morning, plus either tea with scones or cocktails and canapés in the evening. Sweet Dreams is not only in the heart of bourbon country, but the proprietor might be a long-lost relative of mine, which for now we’ll keep quiet about. And her husband owns a craft distillery outside of town.’ She braced herself for Michael’s next parlay – which never came.

MISSING - Mary Ellis - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, Mary. I know you speak at various conferences and meetings. What do you have coming up in 2021?
Right now I haven’t scheduled anything for 2021 since I’m at high risk for the virus. But I do hope to attend the ACFW conference in the fall, and smaller Ohio conferences and meetings until then. I truly don’t look forward to getting on a plane.

I so understand. I’m at high risk for the virus, too, so I’m careful. If you were planning a women’s retreat, what would be the theme for it?
I believe my theme would be “The role of Christian women in a rapidly changing world.” Between racial tensions across the country and this horrible virus, Christian women need to safely reach out to others with understanding and kindness. Many people are hurting—emotionally, financially and spiritually. We need to serve them while spreading the word that our only hope, our only lifeline, is Jesus.

I so agree with you. He is the only answer. Who would you want as speakers and why?
Well, the first speaker I’d invite would be you, Lena, because I know you and your husband have spent many years in Christian service. The second person I’d invite would be my pastor’s wife for her speaking ability, and finally I’d invite someone who has worked outside the US in missions.

Where would you hold the retreat and why?
I would hold the retreat at one of Ohio’s seven state parks. Each lodge has all the necessary amenities for the perfect getaway—pools, lakes, bike trails, water sports, restaurants, plus acres of forest trails for peaceful prayers and mediation. They have plenty of space to convene indoors, outdoors, even under the stars.

I would accept that invitation to speak there in a heartbeat. Do you read print books or ebooks? Or a combination of the two?
I’m an old-fashioned girl…I read only print books. I like the feel of paper and a solid binding. Also, since I spend so much time on my computer as an author, I like to get away from electronics during my free time.

Missing is an interesting title. How did you come up with it?
During rumschpringe, Amish parents allow their daughters quite a bit of freedom. This is the time for young men and women to experience the Englishers’ world before settling down, getting married, and committing to the Amish faith. When my Amish character disappears, her parents assume she went to an amusement park for a few days or took a trip to Cleveland. Only her English friend, Lily, suspects something has happened to Charlotte.

Interesting. So what is the book about?
Young women are disappearing in Plum Creek, Ohio, and Lily Sellers seems to be the only one concerned. Since her parents own a grocery store in Holmes Country, Lily grew up surrounded by Amish until she left for college. But her father’s sudden death brings her home until her mother can find a buyer for the store. FBI agent Marc Harris hasn’t been home since joining the profiler unit five years ago. His agenda for the next ten days includes fishing, visiting the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and falling asleep in the hammock. But an impulsive stop at the country store changes his plans. Marc enjoys getting to know Lily but doesn’t buy her theory. Marc joins Lily’s wild goose chase, if for no reason than to prove Plum Creek is still the same sweet town he remembers. Lily accompanies Charlotte to an Amish tent revival where Charlotte meets the handsome, charismatic preacher. When Charlotte also disappears, Lily fears a dangerous predator is preying on young women. Marc must rally the Bureau’s full resources to unravel a complicated scheme of deception.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Funny how life sometimes turns out…

If anyone would have asked Lily Sellers the day she graduated from Ohio University what she’d be doing in three months, she never would have said stocking shelves with jams, jellies, and pickled veggies in the heart of Amish country. Armed with degrees in both web design and graphic arts, Lily had been searching for a job in Columbus, Cincinnati, and Chicago. Her talents and abilities could be put to much better use in metropolitan-area corporations than in small towns surrounded by rolling farmland. Cities also had chic neighborhoods full of eligible bachelors and elegant apartments. Lily didn’t know what she wanted more: a furnished urban loft where she could display her fledgling collection of cityscape photographs, or an honest-to-goodness date that didn’t involve college sports or a fraternity house party.

Where did women meet men who enjoyed museums, art galleries, coffeehouses, and an occasional hike in the great outdoors? Certainly not in a grocery store that catered to tourists by the busload.

But for the foreseeable future, Plum Creek was where she needed to be.

Her father hadn’t asked for the heart attack which ended his life at fifty-eight. Nor had her mother wanted the auto-immune disease which robbed her of energy and motor coordination and now confined her to a wheelchair. Her parents had sacrificed summer vacations, home improvements, and creature comforts to put her through four years of college. So until they found a suitable buyer for Sellers’ Country Market, Lily would remain in Plum Creek to help Mom manage the store. Columbus, Cincinnati, and Chicago—along with Rome, Paris, and London—would still be there when the time was right.
“Lily?” said a weak voice over the store’s loudspeaker. “Could you come up front, please? And bring the broom,” her Mom added.
Lily pushed the case of apricot preserves out of the way of unobservant shoppers, grabbed the broom from the stockroom, and hurried to the front, smiling at tourists and local patrons along the way. At the cash register, Lily found a red-faced shopper and her mom in a ruffled smock with Connie, at your service embroidered over the left pocket.

“Sorry for the mess, Lily,” said the customer. “Your ma told me to leave the sunflower seeds in the cart, but I didn’t listen.” Between the checkout conveyor and the candy rack lay twenty-five pounds of scattered birdseed.

ISLAND OF LAST RESORTS

Dear Readers, I’m thrilled to share this romantic suspense novel with you. Mary Ellis has been a friend for a long time, and I love reading her novels. Each suspense book has a strong plot line with twists and turns that keep the reader guessing. This one is a little bit darker than most of them. Being the fourth in a series, many of the characters feel like my real live friends. They pulled me into the story, and I lived it right along with them. And as always there is a happily-ever-after ending. You won’t want to miss this wonderful read.

Welcome back, Mary. Tell us a little about yourself and your background.
I am an author of twenty-six published books, including Amish fiction, historical romance, and romantic suspense. My most recent story, Missing, is a novella which appeared in the Summer of Suspense anthology. My fellow authors and I were thrilled when the book made the USA Today bestseller list. I have a BS in Education and taught middle school for 10 years before I worked in sales and marketing and finally, started writing full-time. I live in Ohio with my husband of many years and my dog.
How did you become interested in writing?
It seems like I’ve always been interesting in storytelling, but I became interested in fiction writing from the encouragement of a friend. She was already a published author and loved how I could weave a simple sequence of events into a high-drama tale, complete with the possibility of romance. Once I started writing novels, I can no longer say “hello” in less than a paragraph. Twitter, for me, is out of the question.

Twitter has doubled the number of letters allowed. Maybe you can now. What compelled you to write a book on this subject?
Islands have always held a special appeal for me. I find them wildly romantic, yet oddly mysterious at the same time. There is an air of danger if no road or causeway connects you to the rest of civilization. So I loved the idea of turning a dream getaway at a luxury mansion into survival of the fittest or bravest for a group of coworkers. People don’t know what they’re capable of until they are put to the test.

What is the main theme or point that you want readers to understand from reading your book? Are there any other themes present in the book?
I believe the major theme of Island of Last Resorts is perseverance. We must not give up in the face of adversity. With God’s help, we never know what we are capable of achieving or enduring.  A secondary theme would be trusting those we love and/or respect.
Are there some specific lessons you hope readers will learn and apply to their lives after reading your book?
Never let fear determine the outcome of your daily battles. Each day we are tested, whether small trials like being trapped in traffic for hours, to major battles like a life-changing diagnosis. We must give control of each outcome to God. We can do virtually nothing without His Grace.

That is the truth. My 2019 has been full of situations where we had to completely rely on Him. And He is able. What makes your book different than any other books similar to yours that are in circulation today?
I use multiple points of view to tell my story and deepen the mystery because no two people will ever experience a situation in the same way. When up against a wall, people will find a variety of methods to solve their dilemma.

I loved that about the book. How does the book intertwine with God’s call on your life and how you are currently serving Him?
I have always found it easier to commune with God while walking the beach or on a path in the forest. There I see His hand in the beauty of nature, and He speaks to me best when I’m alone. So I created a story in which the characters must look deep inside themselves and call upon their faith if they wish to survive this island.
Do you have a favorite Scripture verse?
“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you: never will I forsake you.’”  (Heb. 13-5 NIV)
When you are not writing, what do you like to do? Do you have any hobbies?
When I’m not writing I love to read, of course, walk my dog, work in my 3-acre yard, and ride my bike. (anything, but housework…lol) I also love walking on the beach and snorkeling, but I can no longer manage those due to bad arthritis.

Arthritis has limited some of my usual activities, too. As we close, is there anything else you would like to add?
If readers enjoy my humble story half as much as I enjoyed writing this book, I would be overjoyed!

Then let me pour some joy on you. I loved, loved, loved it. Where can my readers find you on the Internet?
Readers may find me at www.maryellis.net or on Facebook at Mary.Ellis.Author.

HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT - Mary Ellis - One Free Book

Dear Readers, I’ve been looking forward to this latest romantic suspense novel from Mary Ellis. I always read her books as soon as they arrive. As usual, I fell in love with her multi-faceted characters. Some things in her novels are quirky, and there were more quirky characters than usual. And the suspense kept me guessing. I highly recommend this wonderful read.

Signing books at a library event
Welcome back, Mary. You have a lot of books out now. What is your favorite setting to use in your books?
It’s a toss-up between the charming little towns not far from my Ohio home to set my Amish tales, or the gorgeous cities of the South such as Savannah, Charleston, New Orleans, or Memphis, because I do love to travel! My husband and I will be fortunate enough to spend the upcoming winter months in Georgia. As much as I love Ohio, I do not like winter anymore.

I’m glad my husband and I live in Texas in the winter. What do you look for when you’re shopping for a book to buy for yourself?
I love mysteries, whether historical, contemporary, or Amish. They must be good, clean reads with no graphic descriptions, foul language, or sexy scenes. But I do love a little romance in the story, because after all, love makes the world go round!

Give us a little tour of the setting for this book.
Home office
The setting of Hiding in Plain Sight is the historic section of Charleston, South Carolina, voted by Fodor’s Magazine as the most beautiful place to visit in America. I certainly must agree. I had so much fun dodging horse-drawn carriages on the cobblestone streets. I also have scenes set on Kiawah Island, fifteen miles away at the beach. Best of both worlds!

What other books do you have coming out soon?
I have an Amish novella, Nothing Tastes So Sweet, releasing in the anthology, The Amish Sweet Shop, in December. Emma Miller and Laura Bradford also contributed novellas to this anthology.

Writing porch
I’d love to feature that on my blog, too. Please give us a glimpse inside your home.
My home is an A-frame in the middle of three acres of woods. Very private. But the driveway is no fun in the winter. I attached a picture of my office and my porch where I do my writing in nice weather.

Is this novel part of a series or a stand-alone book?
Hiding in Plain Sight is book one of the Marked for Retribution Mysteries. Book two, Sweet Taste of Revenge, will release in February of 2019. I’m happy to say that book three in the series has just been contracted for late 2019.

I’ll be looking forward to each of them. Tell us about this story.
On the run from a troubled past, Kate Weller, the newest member of Price Investigations, covers her tracks, changes her name and takes a case in Charleston, South Carolina, where she can hide in plain sight. Renting a charming room with a waterfront view, Kate sets about trying to locate her adopted client’s natural siblings, only to find more questions than answers when she eventually tracks down a long-lost sister. Meanwhile, her new landlord won’t stop sticking his nose into her case. As far as Kate’s concerned, Eric Manfredi should focus on whatever competitor is bent on ruining his family business. But when petty vandalism turns lethal, and Eric’s father is arrested for murder, Kate determines to prove his innocence. Can she find the real culprit before a killer from her own past tracks her down?

Please give us the first page of the book for my blog readers.
Chapter One
Savannah
It wouldn’t have taken much to turn a lousy day into something left of atrocious. First, Kate Weller had argued with her landlord who was suddenly demanding a year-long lease instead of their current month-to-month agreement. Apparently, paying in full and on time can work against a person. The landlord wanted her to stick around forever. Next, the air-conditioning in her old Mustang quit working. Since a person couldn’t run surveillance with the top down in a convertible, she was forced to endure an uncomfortable afternoon. Finally, she had to watch a landscaper toil for hours in the hot sun without showing the least bit of interest in his female co-worker. Kate yearned to tell his suspicious wife she was imagining things. But since her newfound career as a PI demanded finesse as well as endurance, she would resist insulting the client and be thankful she had a job, considering the gaps in her résumé.

Kate liked her job and the people she worked with. Beth Kirby, a fellow employee, was given the thankless job of training her during her probationary period. She liked her boss, Nate Price too, despite only meeting the man once. And as the agency’s traveling PI, she loved knowing she would soon move on to a new case in a different town. Where no one knows my name, she thought, putting a new twist on an eighties sit-com jingle.

Considering how many times she got stuck in traffic, she should have found the answer to world peace, let alone mapped out her future. Because it was definitely time to move on. An occasional hang-up in the middle of the night might not cause concern. But when the same car parked outside her apartment four nights in a row, Kate knew her past had caught up with her. It wasn’t easy to hide in the twenty-first century.

Maybe if I learned how to cook, quilt, and sew my own clothes, then I could hide in an Amish community. Or maybe not.

After parking the Mustang behind the building, Kate climbed the steps to the second floor, turned the key in the lock, and pushed open the door. Silently, she stood listening . . . for what? The cocking of a trigger? The slide of a semi-automatic chambering a bullet? Or maybe the deep breathing of a madman waiting for her to step across the threshold. Kate had no idea exactly who was after her or how deadly were their intentions. But if the past was a good indicator of the future, she didn’t want to stick around to find out.

SUNSET IN OLD SAVANNAH - Mary Ellis - One Free Book

Welcome back, Mary. Do you have a favorite genre to write? If so, what is it?
Yes, I love mysteries and romantic suspense. It’s the genre I began my career with, and I am so glad to be back. My current series is Secrets of the South Mysteries.

And these are my favorites of all the books of yours I’ve read. If you didn’t live in the part of the country where you do, where would you live?
I would live in the South, in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, or Louisiana. I absolutely love where I was born and raised—Ohio—but the older I get the more adverse to cold weather I become. When my husband retires, we plan to become snowbirds for 3 or 4 months out of the year.

A lot of Snowbirds come to Texas. What foreign country would you like to visit and why?
I would like to visit France, especially the countryside. France looks so romantic and quaint. I love the old and quaint places of the world. Too bad I can’t speak a word of French!

Describe what you think would be the most romantic vacation you could take.
When I watch Masterpiece Theatre on PBS, Viking Cruise Line is usually one of their sponsors. I would love to take a Viking cruise in Europe—Germany, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, France—anywhere!

Where would you like to set a story that you haven’t done yet?
I would like to set a story in St. Augustine, Florida. I love the old, historic section of town. I visited it several times, once while on a sailboat cruising the Intracoastal Waterway down to Fort Lauderdale. It was New Year’s Eve, and I can still remember walking through the cobblestone streets like it was yesterday.

I set a small part of my pirate book in historical St. Augustine. What is the main theme of this novel?
Since the story deals with marital infidelity, the theme of the novel is forgiveness. A Christian needs to set an example of forgiveness for others—not an easy task, to be sure.

Tell us about the story.
In Savannah, everyone has something to hide. Investigative partners and best friends Michael Preston and Elizabeth Kirby are hired by a wealthy socialite to do surveillance on her wayward husband. When the husband turns up dead, the socialite becomes the police’s chief suspect. Mike and Beth must follow the clues through the historic town with more secrets than branches of moss-draped oaks. The duo uncovers a hodgepodge of potential murderers, including a scheming business partner, a resentful mistress, and a ne'er-do-well brother. As praise of their agency gets around, Mike and Beth must hire investigator Kaitlyn Webb to ease the workload. But will ghosts of Kate’s past threaten everyone's safety before a killer can be put behind bars?

Please give us the first page of Sunset in Old Savannah:
If ever there was a perfect time for Beth Kirby to get out of town it was now. While other parts of the country were enjoying the first crisp days of fall, the streets of Natchez, Mississippi, could melt the rubber off her worn-out tires. Her mother’s hints that she should attend dance lessons with them at the community college had become insistent demands. After all, lots of eligible men were taking lessons these days. Rita’s criteria would include any unmarried male between twenty-five and sixty who’s still breathing without mechanical assistance. Then there was the obstruction of justice charge pending against her in district court. Despite her current partner’s assurance, the D. A. wouldn’t drop the second degree felony until her former partner withdrew his complaint. And nasty Jack was living up to his reputation by taking his sweet time.

So why do I feel so uneasy? Beth parked in the shade and headed toward the back entrance of Price Investigations, only to be intercepted by her partner.

“I see you’re here on time for a change.” Michael Preston practically levitated from his shoes with excitement.

“I’m always on time, give or take ten minutes.” She stepped around him on the metal steps. “Could we not act like sixth-graders on a field trip to Graceland?”

Michael kept pace at her heels. “I thought you couldn’t wait to get out of Natchez for a while. Are you homesick already?”

“Hardly, but I know better than to get my hopes up too soon.” Beth pulled open the door and waved him in.

Always the gentlemen, Michael refused to precede her inside. “You first, Miss Kirby.”

“One of you should come in,” called the office secretary. Maxine dragged Beth across the threshold by her sleeve. “Nate’s chomping at the bit to deliver some good news.”

Before she could free her arm from Maxine, Nate hollered from his office. “That you, Beth and Michael? Grab a cup of coffee and get in here.”

“Donuts, Miss Maxine?” Michael produced a bag from behind his back. “Cream-filled with icing and chocolate sprinkles—your personal favorite.”

Maxine snatched the bag from his fingers. “Be still, my beating heart.”

Beth rolled her eyes as she filled her mug. “Bring me a donut, too,” she called over her shoulder.
Belatedly, she remembered eating most of Nate’s M&M’s and then neglecting to replace the bag.
Their boss straightened in his upholstered leather chair, looking tan and well-rested after his three-week vacation at the beach. “Make yourselves comfortable. I’m sorry that yesterday’s staff meeting deteriorated into an impromptu celebration, complete with mystery guests from all over the state.”

Beth took the chair closest to the door. “Never apologize for a party during work hours.”

“It’s not every day we hear a honeymoon was an unqualified success. A new baby on the way—congratulations, Nate.” Michael leaned against the windowsill, two donuts in one hand, coffee in the other.

“He and Isabelle have been married for two years, Einstein. It’s not like they’re rookies—” Recognizing the indelicate ground on which she tread, Beth swallowed a gulp of coffee. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean…”

“No problem,” laughed Nate. “The pregnancy came as a pleasant surprise, but enough about that. While Isabelle and I were sightseeing, I found a case for both of you.”

WHAT HAPPENED ON BEALE STREET - Mary Ellis - One Free Book

Dear Readers, I loved the first book in Mary’s Secrets of the South series, so I was eager to read this one. It’s even better. Mary’s research really gave her a feel for the South making her settings even richer in history and tradition that wove through this contemporary romantic suspense novel. The wide variety of types of characters carried the story to amazing places. You really won’t want to miss this wonderful read.

Bio: Mary Ellis has written twelve award-winning novels set in the Amish community and several historical romances set during the Civil War. Her latest, What Happened on Beale Street, is second of a new mystery series, Secrets of the South, from Harvest House Publishers. Before “retiring” to write full-time, Mary taught school and worked as a sales rep for Hershey Chocolate, a job with amazingly sweet fringe benefits. Mary enjoys traveling, gardening, bicycling, and swimming and lives in Ohio with her husband, dog, and cat.

Welcome back, Mary. How did this book come about?
During my travels through the South, I discovered the Mississippi Blues Trail which I followed to Beale Street in Memphis. I’ve always loved music, so I created a story about two PI’s who come to Memphis to solve their friend’s murder. While researching in the area, I discovered the marvelous Peabody Hotel. It’s had one hundred years of history, romance, and intrigue within its stately walls. So of course my characters had to stay at this elegant hotel.

Tell us about the book’s cover and what makes it unique.
During my last trip to Memphis, my husband and I ate at B.B. King’s Restaurant on Beale Street. I took a photograph that’s almost identical to the book cover, but I’d never sent the photo to my publisher. The cover designer for Harvest House couldn’t have selected a better cover for my story.

Please explain and differentiate between what’s fact and fiction in the book.
The events which take place in the book are pure imagination, but I tried to make the characters and setting as true to life as possible. I changed the name of the hotel to the Carlton in the book, so readers don’t confuse a real place with made-up events. We can’t have guests tearing about the hotel, looking for missing jewels.

How much research did you have to do for this book?
Plenty. I studied the history of the city of Memphis from after the Civil War through its recent rebirth/renewal. I researched the birth of the blues, along with its founding musicians, and then made several trips to Beale Street and traveled the Blues Trail into Mississippi. For the characters I interviewed a chief of police, the director of a homeless shelter, two hotel managers and a concierge, several professional musicians, and a real estate agent. And of course, I listened to CD’s of the blues while writing.

I love blues music. What are some of the most interesting things you found about this subject that you weren’t able to use in the story?
I have a subplot which involves jewels that have been missing for fifty years. While staying in the elegant hotel where this subplot takes place, I was able to incorporate several real-life details into my fiction. To tell you more than that would spoil the story.

What inspired and surprised you while you were writing the book?
I was able to incorporate many obscure details I learned during my trips into the story. An author never knows what will be useful while writing.

That is so true. What do you hope the reader takes away from the story?
One of my characters, Danny Andre, volunteered at an outreach center for those recovering from drug/alcohol problems. The neighborhood Danny lived in, along with his volunteer activities and late-night line of work, often put him in danger. But as a Christian, he took Jesus’s command to serve his fellow man seriously. His character is an example for all Christians.

What is the next project you’re working on?
I just finished the edits on book 3 of the Secrets of the South Mysteries. Magnolia Moonlight, the story about a murdered minister set in Natchez, Mississippi, will release in August. And I’m presently writing book 4, Sunset in Old Savannah. Since I plan to live in Georgia for half the year after my husband retires, it was a pleasure to research and write this book.

I can hardly wait for the next book to release. We need to schedule it on my blot. What do you do when you have to get away from the story for a while?
I’m lucky to live on 3 acres of wooded land. There are always branches and broken limbs to be gathered and dragged to the burn pile. I take my dog, and we stomp around the woods for an hour. When I come back to the house, I’m physically exhausted but mentally refreshed.

Tell us about the story.
How Can Music So Beautiful
Hide Something So Deadly?

A cryptic plea for help from a childhood friend sends cousins Nate and Nicki Price from New Orleans to Memphis. When these two private investigators arrive at Danny Andre’s last known address, they discover signs of a struggle and a lifestyle not in keeping with the choirboy they fondly remember.

Danny’s sister, Isabelle, reluctantly accepts their help. She and Nate aren’t on the best of terms due to a shared past. Can they get beyond painful memories to find her brother?

And what on earth was Danny involved in besides becoming a rising star as a sax player? Nate and Nicki follow clues into dim and smoky clubs, trail potential stalkers, and challenge dangerous men with connections to underworld drug trafficking. To complicate things, the hotel they are staying in has its own secrets. Confronted with murder and mystery in the land of the Delta blues, the cousins and Isabelle will have to rely on their faith and investigative experience to solve the case and not lose their lives.

Please give us the first page of the book for my readers.
New Orleans
Nicki Price opened one eye to find an irate face looming over her in the dark room.

“Why do you pay a phone bill if you refuse to answer the thing?” Her roommate slapped the phone down on Nicki’s solar plexus, none too gently.

“I do pick up when people call during daylight hours.” Letting her cell fall to the floor, Nicki turned over and snuggled deeper under her covers.

Chloe Galen plopped down on the edge of the bed. “Nic, you’re a partner in a big-time PI agency. You need to be ready for adventure twenty-four-seven.”

“Spoken like a true artist-in-residence, who paints solely when the creative impulse strikes but under no circumstances before noon. Besides, Price Investigations is not a big-time agency. I work for my cousin for chump change.” Nicki tried to bump Chloe off the bed with her hip. “Isn’t it the middle of the night? Why are you still up?”

“Because whenever I doze off, your stupid phone wakes me up. How can you stand the theme song from a TV Western for a ringtone? If you don’t answer the next time it rings, I’m coming back with a bucket of cold water.” Chloe picked the phone from the rug just as it began its annoying tune again as though on cue and handed it to her friend.

Nicki sat upright and kicked the tangled covers to the foot of her bed. “Hello?” she demanded crossly. “Whoever you are, do you have any idea what time it is?”

“Nicki?” A familiar voice on the other end sounded distant. “It’s Danny Andre.”

“Danny. I’d recognize your Barry White imitation underwater.” Nicki changed her tone as every trace of sleepiness vanished. “How are you? Where are you? I heard you moved to the big city to seek fame and fortune. I have major news too—a new job, cool apartment, and a real live fee-ahn-say.” She couldn’t help grinning as she said that last bit.

MIDNIGHT ON THE MISSISSIPPI - Mary Ellis - One Free Book

Dear Blog Readers, Midnight on the Mississippi is a departure from the type of books, Mary Ellis has written before. I absolutely loved it. It’s my favorite book by Mary. The setting and feeling of the South, the characters who leapt off the pages, and the wonderful suspense plot that kept me guessing. I know you won’t want to miss this novel.

Welcome back, Mary. Since you’re being published regularly, what new avenues will your future books take?
I love writing mysteries and romantic suspense set in the South. Since we’ll be living in a warmer climate once my husband retires, at least part of the year, I’m enjoying researching places to live and towns to set my stories in.

What conferences will you be attending this year? Will you be a speaker at any of them?
Unfortunately, I won’t be attending any conferences and I will truly miss ACFW’s. This year my husband and I are taking a month-long research trip/vacation, which will consume every penny of our travel budget. Next year I hope to attend ACFW in Nashville and RWA in New Orleans.

ACFW is very near my house, but I don’t think I’ll be able to go because of my knee replacement surgery. I’ll try to go out at least one day if I can. If you were in charge of planning the panel discussion at a writing conference, what topic would the panel cover, and who would you ask to be on the panel, and why?
I would plan a panel of authors who have changed genres or successfully write in several genres at the same time. Since Midnight on the Mississippi represents a change in genres for me, I would be fascinated by their answers.

How important is it to you to be active in writing organizations?
Frankly, I wouldn’t be where I am today without writing conferences. I have taken and learned from dozens of wonderful workshops, participated in panel discussions, and networked with other writers, agents, editors, and industry professionals. I attend every one that I can possibly afford. Their value is immeasurable.

Where in the community or your church do you volunteer?
I have volunteered at my church with our homeless outreach, Sunday school and VBS, at our local SPCA chapter, the local historical society, and with the women’s auxiliary in our town, which is a community service organization.

Who are the five people who have made the most impact on your life, and how?
My Lord Jesus Christ, my parents who adopted me when I was six weeks old, my husband of many years, and Pastor Bob Pettuccio, who baptized me for a second time. He taught me to live my faith every day.

If you could write the inscription on your tombstone, what would it be?
Here lies Mary Ellis who wished she’d discovered writing a little earlier in life!

Tell us about the featured book, Midnight on the Mississippi:
What lies beneath the black water of the bayou? Hunter Galen, a New Orleans securities broker, suspects his business partner, James Nowak, of embezzling their clients’ money, but he’s reluctant to jeopardize their friendship. After James turns up dead, Hunter realizes his unwillingness to confront a problem may have cost James his life. Nicki Price, a newly minted PI, intends to solve the stockbroker’s murder as she establishes herself in the career she adores. As she ferrets out fraud and deception at Galen-Nowak Investments, Hunter’s fiancée, Ashley Menard, rubs her the wrong way. Nicki doesn’t trust the ostentatious woman who seems to be hiding something, but is the PI’s growing attraction to Hunter—the police’s only suspect—her true reason for disliking Ashley? As Hunter and Nicki encounter sophisticated shell games, blackmail, and death threats both subtle and overt, danger swirls around them like the mysterious dark water of the bayou. Only their reliance on faith and fearless determination give them hope they will live to see another day.

Please give us the first page of the book for my readers.
Yacht Queen Antoinette
Somewhere on Lake Pontchartrain
“What? I still can’t hear you, James!” Hunter Galen shouted into the mouthpiece. “Call me back in a few minutes. I’m going on deck. Maybe the signal will be stronger.” Ending the call, he headed for the doorway of the grand dining salon. Around him, the birthday party was in full swing. He glanced across a room filled with smiling faces, assured that the party had been a great idea. His mother, still stunning at sixty years old, was dancing with the senior partner of the law firm that had represented Galen business interests for years. Was something going on between them—more than just a slow waltz between old friends? Maybe, but he wouldn’t worry about it tonight. His mother and everyone else were enjoying themselves. In addition to delicious catering and plentiful libations, two bands—zydeco and swing—provided entertainment, with even a DJ between sets to keep the younger generation happy.

From the corner of his eye, Hunter spotted his girlfriend, soon-to-be fiancée, clinking champagne glasses with his sister, Chloe, and his sister-in-law, Cora. Together the three looked like a blonde, brunette, and flaming redhead hair color advertisement. While he watched, Ashley Menard glanced his way, her face lighting up with a Miss Louisiana smile. That’s what she once had been—or, at least, first runner-up. Tall and reed slim, Ashley’s cool composure stemmed from the belief that everything she touched would turn to gold. And it usually did. She lifted two fingers in a wave before refocusing on her future sisters-in-law.

“Don’t even think of getting down on one knee until you ask Daddy,” Ashley had warned him. Daddy. Twenty-six years old and owner of a chain of hair salons, yet she still referred to her father with a juvenile moniker. Well, this still was the old South, after all.

When the vibration of his phone jarred his attention from the party, he saw on the screen that it was James again. Sighing, he headed up the stairs for better reception. On the promenade deck above, Hunter sucked in a lungful of humid air and leaned over the polished teak railing. “Hello, James,” he spoke into the mouthpiece.

“Hunter, we have to talk. This is important. I know you’re tied up right now, but I had drinks tonight with old man Morrison at the bank. He wants to talk to us about the credit advance I requested. He refuses to extend the corporate credit line until we both come to his office. That tight-fisted—”

His colorful description of their banker became garbled as James’s voice rose with agitation.
