Welcome, Penny. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon? My agent has recently encouraged me to also pursue writing romantic suspense. I love to read this genre, and I’m excited to see where God leads me regarding writing it.

I love romantic suspense. Tell us a little about your family. I am married to my husband, Lon, and have two daughters, whom I homeschooled. We are an active family and spend a lot of time outside. I am very close to my extended family, which includes my mom, dad, sister, brother-in-law, and niece and nephews.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how? I’ve always loved to read. I do find that when I’m on a deadline, I have less time to read. Having said that, my family surprises me with a new book from a favorite author for when I’ve met the deadline. Excellent motivation!

What are you working on right now? I am super excited to be working on the second book in the Wyoming Sunrise Series, Dreams of the Heart. This time, readers will catch a glimpse of John Mark Eliason in his own book.

What outside interests do you have? When I’m not dreaming up new characters, I enjoy spending time with her husband and two daughters and camping, hiking, canoeing, biking, reading, running, gardening, and playing volleyball.

How do you choose your settings for each book? I primarily stick to Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho because I especially love the history from those states.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be? Definitely Jesus.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels? How much work goes into it after the book is written!

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now? I struggle sometimes with worry, and God continues to grow me in that area.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful? I would tell them not to focus on sales or reviews, but to focus on how your books are impacting lives for the better and to see it as a ministry. Yes, sales are important, especially when bills are piling up. But in the end, the only thing that matters is the difference we made via our writing for the Lord. On that note, I would tell them to remember to put God first and to completely surrender their writing to Him. Third, I would suggest to writers to form an author coalition. The camaraderie between authors is special and unparalleled. Other authors have been there, done that, and can offer encouragement and support in ways no one else can.

Wyoming Territory, 1877

A fleeting movement caught twelve-year-old Annie Ledbetter’s attention. She squinted at the grove of trees on a distant hill and willed her eyes to focus. A quick flash of something—or someone—appeared. Annie tipped her head to the left and stood on tiptoe, anticipating a better view.

The vacant prairie previously held nothing but miles and miles of grasslands, sagebrush, and the occasional rolling hill.

Until now.

Hello, Lena. It’s great to be here!

God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?

I have been praying about where God would lead me next in my writing ministry. My passion is to continue impacting lives for Christ through my novels. As far as what I see on the horizon, I have a couple other series of books that I have started that I am looking forward to seeing them to completion.

Tell us a little about your family.

I have been married to my husband, Lon, for 19 years (we married really young!) and we have two elementary-aged daughters.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?

With deadlines, I have less time to read. However, I still do find time to read and have read some wonderful novels by fellow Christian authors lately. I have been an avid reader since the time I could read, and I consider reading a relaxing and enjoyable pastime.

What are you working on right now?

I am working on a series that takes place just after the Civil War. I have completed the first novel and am working on the second.

What outside interests do you have?

I love to spend time with my family and friends. I also enjoy volleyball, hiking, camping canoeing, bicycling, and gardening.

How do you choose your settings for each book?

I’ve always enjoyed learning about the 1800s, and I have long been intrigued by the beauty and history of the State of Montana, so I was excited to set a series in that state. My family and I visit Montana regularly and one year traveled throughout the entire state and stopped at a ghost town, which gave me a lot of inspiration for my series. The other series of books I am working on take place in other states and I have learned so much about their histories while writing those books as well.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?

Definitely Jesus. I would love to sit in His Presence and learn all I could from Him. I would also thank Him continually for what He did for me.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?

How much time was going to be spent in marketing and promoting those novels! As the saying goes…the hardest part starts after the book is published!

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?

The Lord is teaching me more than ever to rely on Him in all circumstances. He has also placed it in my heart to desire to be completely in His will in my writing ministry and to be sensitive and open to His leading.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?

Wow, Lena. This is a great question! I would say the most important thing authors can do is to pray and give their writing career to the Lord. Secondly, I would say to put others first and to be an encourager of other writers. And not only an encourager to other writers, but also an encourager to your readers. Connect with them and let them know you appreciate them. Third, I would say it’s critical to build an online presence in order to promote your book. This can be done a variety of ways, including a website, blog, Twitter, Facebook, Shoutlife, and LinkedIn.

However, she knew that a change in location would do her heart good, and that she was following God’s prompting to fulfill the dream she’d had in her heart since she was a young girl.

KAYDIE - Penny Zeller - Free Book

Welcome back, Penny. Why do you write the kind of books you do?


Thank you for having me here, Lena. Writing is my ministry, and I pray daily that the path of writing that I have chosen in life will glorify the Lord. I am in constant prayer for wisdom, guidance, and that my books would be life-changing – that they would bring others to the Lord or closer to the Lord. I have chosen Psalm 19:14 as my life verse: “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?

The happiest days of my life were the day I married my husband and the times we became parents to our two daughters.

How has being published changed your life?

Life is a lot busier! I also discovered rather quickly that the hard work begins after publication. J

What are you reading right now?

 I am reading a fantastic love story by Melinda Evaul titled Grow Old With Me. I’m also reading and studying Acts in the Bible.

What is your current work in progress?

I am currently working on book two in my second historical romance series, which takes place in the post Civil-War era.

What would be your dream vacation?

Hmmm….well there’s a four-way tie of places I would love to visit for a dream vacation with my family: Hawaii, Alaska, Hilton Head Island and Prince Edward Island.

How do you choose your settings for each book?

I choose places that intrigue me or places that I have visited. I am a very visual person, so if I have visited a place, I can easily integrate my characters into that setting.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?

 Let’s see…family and friends aside, I would say the Christian band Kutless because they’re my favorite music group and I love their hearts for God.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?

I also enjoy playing volleyball, gardening, camping, hiking, canoeing, and spending time with my family.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?

I would say my most difficult writing obstacle is setting priorities and sticking to them and not wasting time on less important things on my “to-do list.”

What advice would you give to a beginning author?

God calls us all to do different things for His Kingdom. If He has called you to write, seek His guidance. Never give up, even when you feel like it or when someone has unkindly criticized you. Seek to please and honor Him in whatever  you write, whether it be for the secular or nonsecular market; whether it be fiction, nonfiction, poetry, song lyrics, or a screenplay. Find a mentor and be open to ideas and suggestions from one who’s “been there, done that.” One final note, join forces with other Christian writers. After all, we are all working for the same Boss.

I am thrilled about my featured book. It is titled Kaydie and is book two in my Montana Skies Historical Romance Series (Whitaker House). Here is a short blurb:

      “No, Darius, I’m not going with you!” Kaydie Kraemer winced in pain as her husband, Darius, grabbed her arm and pulled her out the door of her sister’s house toward his waiting horse. She tried to pull her arm loose from his tight grasp, but her efforts were futile.
      Darius then reached around and grabbed her other arm, squeezing it so hard that Kaydie could already see the bruises he would leave behind. “You don’t have a choice, Kaydie. You’re my wife, remember?”
      “No, Darius. I’m staying here. I don’t want to be married to you anymore.” Kaydie fought back her tears, hating that they would be sign of weakness to her callous husband.
      “You don’t have a choice,” he snarled. “Now, you can either come willingly, or I can carry you. Which will it be? Because I ain’t leavin’ without you.” He turned his head to the side and spit on the front porch.
      “I thought—I thought you were dead,” Kaydie stammered.
      Darius threw back his head with an evil laugh, which caused the nostrils on his prominent nose to flare in and out. His mouth was open wide, revealing more missing teeth than Kaydie remembered. His stringy brown curls bounced from his collar, and he removed a hand from Kaydie only long enough to slick back the few strands of greasy hair that had fallen over his forehead. He narrowed his eyes, which were already too small for his large face, making them appear even smaller. “I had you fooled, didn’t I? You’re a foolish woman, Kaydie. Ain’t no way I’m gonna die and let you go free! When you said ‘I do,’ it meant that you were bound to me forever!” He gritted his teeth and gripped her arm even tighter.
