TO FOLLOW HER HEART - Rebecca DeMarino - One Free Book

Bio: REBECCA DEMARINO inherited her love of baking and gardening from her mother; a love of horses, reading, and writing from her dad—and the wanderlust gene from both parents. Her new novel, To Follow Her Heart released last month from Revell. She is the author of A Place in His Heart and To Capture Her Heart, books one and two of The Southold Chronicles. A free prologue to The Southold Chronicles series available here: www.RebeccaDeMarino.com

Welcome back, Rebecca. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
I feel very blessed with my next project. Set in colonial times after the American Revolution, it is once again based on the lives of real people—although not my ancestors!

Tell us a little about your family.
My husband and I just celebrated our tenth anniversary! We both have grown children and eleven grandchildren with one more on the way for an even dozen :o) My father is now 93 and wrote started his first novel at age 86. He had a stroke before he finished it, but he did two years later. I had the privilege to help him write the last four chapters, him telling the story, me typing! Talk about an inspiration!

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
Yes. I’ve always enjoyed fiction and my reading choices are pretty eclectic. But because I do so much historical research I mainly read nonfiction nowadays. And I love it!

What are you working on right now?
My third novel in The Southold Chronicles series released last month! And I’ve just finished a novel set in the late 1700’s, early 1800’s.

What outside interests do you have?
I enjoy gardening and baking, neither of which I’ve done a lot of lately! Travel is one of my passions too, and I’m gearing up for a bit of a book tour—starting in Hood River, Oregon, on September 2nd, followed by a week in Mowsley, England, and ending with a two-day book signing on Long Island, the setting for my series.

That sounds like a lot of fun. How do you choose your settings for each book?
My setting chose me, and I’ve loved it! My mother and I traveled to Long Island in 1999 to see the lighthouse named after our ancestor, Barnabas Horton. We learned so much about him at the historical society and library. His grave was covered with a large slab of blue slate. When we got home I wondered about his wife Mary—a young woman when she married this recent widower with two little boys. I decided to write a novel giving her a Point Of View. The setting began in Mowsley, England, and followed them to Southold, Long Island, where they were one of thirteen founding families.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
It would have to be Mary Langton Horton. I’d ask her how much of her goals, motivations, and conflicts I got right!

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
That I’d become obsessed and somewhat of a hermit! I focus everything on my research and writing—but I love it. And at this stage in my life, with my children grown, I can devote my days, and nights if need be, to my passion!

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
That He is faithful and His love never fails. And that God defines my success.

Amen to that. What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
I love this question. I would say write your passion(s). Be diligent in the time you have for writing—be it 30 minutes or all day. Try to turn off your internal editor and just get the story out. This one is a hard one for me! I at least try to limit my editing to a quick review of the previous day’s chapter—only minor fixes allowed. Finish your story—then go back. There are many people who start a book, far fewer finish them.

Tell us about the featured book.
In 1664, Patience Terry is devastated to learn that Captain Jeremy Horton’s ship has been shipwrecked off the coast of Barbados. There were no survivors. She had hoped that Jeremy would someday give up the sea and settle down with her in Southold, Long Island.

Unaware his memorial service is being planned, Jeremy sails aboard a British warship with secret orders to attack New Amsterdam and claim it for the British Crown. When he makes his surprise return to Southold—and to an overjoyed Patience—it’s not quite the happily-ever-after his beloved had hoped for.

July 16, 1664, Southold, Long Island
“Did you hear me?”

Patience Terry stood silent, her mind awhirl. Had she not guarded her heart against this day? Against this pain that ripped through her like a thunderbolt? She looked into Mary Horton’s teary hazel-blue eyes. The Swallow had shipwrecked off the coast of Barbados, tattered and abandoned. No survivors. Captain Jeremy Horton and his crew lost at sea. Some bodies recovered, but no survivors.

Her mouth opened, but no words came out. Her lungs ached, so bereft were they of any air, she of any hope. As her legs gave way, she fell to the pillowed bench in front of the hat display and buried her face in the folds of her blue silk skirt. Her shoulders heaved with each silent sob.

Her friend knelt and drew her into her arms. “That’s good, dear. Cry. Let the tears fall.”

Patience could no longer hold back as torrents of tears soaked her friend’s shoulder.

Mary’s gentle hands patted her back to comfort, but Patience’s temples pulsed with each new thought. Would she never be able to look up and see Jeremy’s form framed in the doorway again? Or could he lie hurt somewhere? She’d begged him at his last visit to give up the sailing, to make a home here in Southold. One she dreamt would include her.

“What if he’s not dead? What if he needs me?” She’d always prayed he would come to know he needed her in his life, but Lord, this was not how she’d envisioned it.

“You mustn’t think like that. The ship has sunk. There was such a storm. And if survivors were able to make land at all, they would have landed on the shores of Barbados. Nathaniel Sylvester brought the news himself. He’s just returned from his meetings there. ’Tis such a shock to know both of Barney’s brothers are gone. It was so difficult when Thomas died. And now Jeremy. He was more than a friend to me, he was a dear brother.” Mary’s voice trailed as Patience’s sobs began anew.

The door blew open as hurricane-strength wind and summer rain swept in with Lizzie Fanning’s arrival, nearly lifting one of her own hat creations from her silvery curls. Mary’s older sister and Patience’s business partner, Lizzie looked in control as she slid the burgundy wool from her head, gave it a good shake, and settled it on a hat stand. “Mary told me on her way over here. I’m so sorry.” She enveloped her friend in a hug, her own tears trickling from violet eyes. She looked up at Mary. “I came immediately after I got my loaves out of the oven. Zeke is on his way to your house.”

Patience didn’t try to hide her pain as the tears escaped in rivulets down her cheeks. She’d never told them in so many words of her love for Jeremy, but the two sisters had pulled her into their family long ago, and matters of the heart were understood rather than spoken.

TO CAPTURE HER HEART - Rebecca DiMarino - One Free Book, Plus More

Welcome back, Rebecca. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I always thought I’d write suspense, but when I discovered my roots and a passion to discover my past, the Southold, Long Island stories took over my imagination, and I just had to write them! And what I’ve found is, I love writing about real women who were heroic during a time when often they had no voice.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
I had three happiest days when each of my daughters was born – but I will say that when my agent called and said “You have a contract offer,” that came close!

How has being published changed your life?
It’s made me more disciplined. I write better under pressure so I like the deadlines. It reminds me to seek God in the morning and depend on Him throughout my writing day. And the real blessing in that is it spills over to every aspect of my life. It also was a dream of mine, so it’s given me a sense of accomplishing a goal.

What are you reading right now?
I just got back from the International Christian Retail Show where I met Kate Breslin and received a copy of her novel, For Such a Time. I started it on the plane and did not want to put it down when we landed!

What is your current work in progress?
I’m working on the edits for book #3 of The Southold Chronicles. My working title for this book was Pure Patience, because it is Patience Terry’s story – a fictitious character who came over from England with the Hortons on The Swallow. I love this story!

What would be your dream vacation?
Right now it would be to return to England and visit Mowsley, the little hamlet where Barnabas and Mary wed. I’ve walked the roads with Google Earth, but I want to sit in the 14th century church that still exists and look through the same stained glass window the Hortons did.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
Each of my three novels is set in Southold, Long Island, New York. Barnabas Horton was one of thirteen founding fathers of the town, and Mary was the courageous woman by his side.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
That’s hard, but I think it would be fun to spend an evening with Debbie Macomber and find out all the behind-the-scenes tidbits in Cedar Cove, and maybe swap recipes while we devour a slice of Pumpkin Tea Cake with Honey Cream. She is a master of making setting a character (right along with Jan Karon), and I would love the chance to soak up anything she could share about her writing journey and technique.

She was the keynote speaker at ACFW’s second Denver conference. I didn’t get to spend an evening with her, but I did get to meet her and have my picture taken with her. I love her books. What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
I love to bake and garden, but travel is a passion of mine. I don’t go as much as I used to, but I do love to get out and about.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
Time management. I overcome it by starting early in the day (often before dawn) and spending time with God first.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
Write your passion, not the trends. If you try to write what’s “hot” without the passion, you will be like hundreds of other great writers hoping to break in. So write your passion, write it well by studying the craft, and connect through writer’s groups and conferences.

Tell us about the featured book.
While researching book one, A Place In His Heart, I uncovered a gold nugget of information about the Montaukett Indian princess, Heather Flower. Her groom was killed on their wedding day, and she was kidnapped by a rival Connecticut tribe. An Englishman paid her ransom. I wanted to use that bit of information in my first book, but it was the wrong decade. But I loved the story so much that I made her my heroine of book two, To Capture Her Heart! The story picks up after her ransom is paid.

June 21, 1653
The thunder of a thousand hooves pounded in her ears and she buried her head beneath her tethered hands. She muted the noise with her arms pressed against her ears. Heather Flower sat very still. She remembered the childhood game peekaboo. She’d believed if she could not see her mother, her mother could not see her.

But this was not a game. Her legs, bound at the ankles, were drawn up under her skirt, and her knees trembled as she lowered her covered head till her forehead touched them. A pool of quiet tears soaked the soft, beaded deerskin.

Sudden silence, save for the occasional snort from the winded horses, or the soft swish of their tails, brought intense fear. Her body shook as she tried to draw herself into the smallest mound possible. The restraints dug into her slender wrists, but her lips were sealed together in a thin line and not a cry escaped.

The footfalls approaching were not the tread of her Indian captors. A leather-clad hand lifted her chin, and her heart quaked in her chest. Her throat constricted until it ached as she gathered her courage and lifted her eyes.

“Hallo! You are Heather Flower, the daughter of the Great Sachem, Wyandanch?” His posture bore no malice but was instead gentle, kind. She dared to hope he would not harm her.

Her chin quivered in the cup of his glove, her moist lashes fluttered, but her voice was strong. “I am Quashawam, the Heather Flower of Montauk.”

A PLACE IN HIS HEART - Rebecca DeMarino - One Free Book on This Blog, Plus More

Dear readers, I’m happy to introduce this debut novelist to you today.

BIO: Rebecca DeMarino lives in the Pacific N.W. with her husband Tom. She enjoys travel, hiking, baking, genealogy and gardening. Her debut novel, A Place in His Heart, is a historical romance inspired by her ninth great-grandparents, Barnabas and Mary Horton, and is book one of The Southold Chronicles.

Welcome, Rebecca. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
I think there are little pieces of my heart in all my characters, really. I think writers cannot help but do that. But I have two sisters, and I think there is a lot of all three of us in Mary and Lizzie.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
My husband and I went to New York to pick up an airplane he bought on Ebay. We flew it from New York to Oregon in the middle of January! It took us over ten days, many of which were spent sipping cocoa while watching snowflakes fall in the little terminals across the country. He thinks this is completely normal. I think it’s a little quirky. But I have to admit it was fun!

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
I had an inkling my senior year in high school when I took a creative writing course. But I didn’t give it another thought until I took my mother on a trip to find our past, and I found a story I couldn’t help but write.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
I love the classics, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Anna Karenina, Wuthering Heights to name a few. I love a good suspense and historicals, especially with romance. I’ve read almost all of John Grisham, Nicholas Sparks and Jane Kirkpatrick books. Other keepers on my bookshelf right now are: Julie Lessman, Lori Benton, Carrie Turansky, Margaret Brownley, Anita Higman and I could go on because there are more on my shelves, but they wouldn’t all fit in this answer! But I love the novels being published today for the CBA, and I think Christian fiction is filling a need in a way it never has before.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
Getting out in nature to walk, jog or hike. I live in the beautiful Columbia Gorge, with mountains, rivers, forest and lakes. So inspiring! But even a walk in the garden relieves stress, clears my mind and that’s when some of my best writing ideas start playing in my brain!

How do you choose your characters’ names?
I write about my real-life ancestors, and I use their real names. Sometimes that is tricky because in the 17th century the English names were pretty much Mary and Elizabeth, Joseph and Thomas. So I had to improvise with a couple, giving them middle names. Mary likes to call people by nicknames, so that helped give variety. I made up the name for Wauwineta, my fictional Native American woman, but Mary likes to call her Winnie and I liked that, too.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Helping my dad finish his own novel, The Stagecoach Murders, after he suffered a stroke. I typed, he dictated the last four chapters. It was a slow process because his speech was affected. He knew exactly what he wanted to say, but it didn’t always come out that way. That gave us a few laughs along the way!

Yes, I loved featuring your father and his novel on this blog. And I enjoyed reading his story. If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
A horse – they are poetry in motion, which I am not!

What is your favorite food?
Mom’s apple pie, still warm from the oven. It’s a tradition in our family.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
Dealing with the day-to-day interruptions of life. Some were major interruptions, like when my father became ill. Others just small inconveniences. I think it’s about setting priorities. For me, it’s making a list the night before of the things I need to do the next day. Seeking God in the morning. Knowing my faith and family come first. And then being diligent in sitting at the desk and writing.

Tell us about the featured book.
A Place in His Heart is a historical romance based on the lives of my ninth great-grandparents. Set in the 1600’s, the story begins in England, before they cross the pond. This is the first of a three book series, The Southold Chronicles, which find the Hortons on Long Island. Barnabas is a Puritan, a baker and a widower of two young sons. He grieves deeply for the loss of his wife, but knows he must find a mother for his two little boys. Mary is a young Anglican maiden, on the verge of being forced into an arranged marriage with Robert. She longs for love and a family, but she knows she will not find it with him. They are two tender hearts, who take a leap of faith and wed, cross an ocean and work together to establish a new home—and a legacy—but will she ever find the secret places of her husband’s broken heart?

October 21, 1630
London, England
Wooden ships languished in the Thames, lolling to and fro, like oxen taking a mud bath. The murky water lapped at the blackened oak as Papa’s words washed over her once more.

Mary Langton leaned over the crumbled stone wall and buried her face in her arms. How long she wept she could only guess. Someone moved beside her, but she could not bear to look—could not bear to face anyone. She turned her tearstained face eastward to the great port.

After an eternity, she pressed a handkerchief to her reddened nose and cast a sideward glance. “Papa.” She straightened and turned from him. What use would a discussion be?

Her sister approached and hope rose in her heart. An ally, perhaps? No, Lizzie stepped aside, apology evident in her eyes.

Papa’s voice was strained, with a sadness she’d not heard since her mother had died. “You shall come to know that I am right, my girl. You might not agree with me today, but you shall see.”

“You are wrong about that . . .”
