DEAD SILENCE - Robin Caroll - One Free Book

Welcome back, Robin. Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

I’m a Louisiana woman living in Arkansas. I’ve been married 31 years, have three daughters, and two grandsons. We have two dogs and two cats.

How did you become interested in writing?

I grew up reading Trixie Belden…I still have the complete series. I loved the stories and found I loved creating stories of my own. My 3rd grade teacher entered me in a writing contest and I was published in the Louisiana “Seedlings” school publications. I’ve also kept a journal for as long as I can remember. Writing is just part of who I am.

What compelled you to write a book on this subject?

In school I had a hearing impaired friend and through her, I learned how to view a soundless world. I found so much interesting and wanted to write a story with a heroine who dealt with deafness.

My younger granddaughter has an Associates degree in sign language and is a translator. What is the main theme or point that you want readers to understand from reading your book? Are there any other themes present in the book?

I wanted readers to know that there is a reason for everything, even if we don’t see what it is. In the world right now, with the political climate being what it is, I hope I showed a human side of political agendas.

Are there some specific lessons you hope readers will learn and apply to their lives after reading your book?

God always has a master plan. Leaning on faith even when you’re scared or angry or confused can get you through anything.

What makes your book different than any other books similar to yours that are in circulation today?

I haven’t read a suspense whose main character had to deal with hearing impairment or one that covers an extremely personal aspect of political chaos.

How does the book intertwine with God’s call on your life and how you are currently serving Him?

I view my writing as a form of ministry…to leave a reader filled with hope that no matter what, God is always with us.

Amen to that. Do you have a favorite Scripture verse?

Phil 4:13  I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

When you are not writing, what do you like to do? Do you have any hobbies?

I LOVE scrapbooking, card making, and art journaling. These are my outlets.

Tell us about the book.

Political games can be deadly…Elise Carmichael is a court sign language interpreter who reads lips all the time. As a widow with a young son who is deaf, lip reading is simply second nature, until the day she reads the lips of someone on the phone discussing an attempt to be made on a senator’s life—a senator who just happens to be her mother-in-law. Before she can decide what she needs to do, she receives the information that her son is rushed to the ER and she must leave. Then she later sees the news report that her mother-in-law has been shot and killed. But when she comes forward, her life, as well as her son’s life, may now be in the crosshairs of the assassin.

As we close, is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you so much for having me. It’s always a pleasure.

TORRENTS OF DESTRUCTION - Robin Caroll - One Free Book

Welcome back, Robin. I know you speak at various conferences and meetings. What do you have coming up?
I’ll be at ICRS, signing copies of my latest Samantha Sanderson book in the Zondervan booth on July 1st at 11:00am. I’ll also be at the ACFW conference in September.

If you were planning a women’s retreat, what would be the theme for it?
Living in His grace. I’m really aware of His grace for us these days. His extraordinary grace in our everyday lives.

Who would you want as speakers and why?
I’m a huge follower of Joyce Meyer because her teaching helps me personally apply Biblical truths into my life.

Where would you hold the retreat and why?
Oh, on a cruise ship. To the Caribbean.

I’d sign up for that retreat in a minute. Do you read print books or ebooks? Or a combination of the two?
I read both. As I get older, my eyesight is making it a little harder for me to read, so I’m finding I read more often on my Kindle so I can make the font bigger.

That’s an interesting title. How did you come up with it?
Torrents of Destruction was taken straight from the Scripture reference of the book, PSALM 18:4-6. This book was inspired after my husband and his friend, Wade, went on a rafting trip on the Gauley River. Hearing about their adventure and watching their video…well, I knew I had to use it as a setting.

So what is the book about?
As a white water rafting guide, Katie Gallagher must battle the forces of nature on a daily basis. When sabotage becomes apparent on a weekend rafting trip, Katie must determine who she can trust—and who has their own agenda. Hunter Malone has a mission on a business adventure trip on the Gauley River, a mission that didn’t include a spunky guide who could handle the class-five rapids better than he’d ever imagined. But can she handle the truth?

Please give us the first page of the book.
Thunder crashed over the West Virginia sky. Clouds cast eerie shadows, foreboding and ominous. Katie Gallagher quickened her pace down the gravel path. The approaching storm interfered with her determined strides. Shadow, her Blue Heeler and ever-present companion, trotted at her side.

She pushed into the store with Shadow on her heels, headed to the counter, and dropped onto the stool. She flipped to this evening’s appointment log and grabbed a pencil from the holder, rolling it between her thumb and forefinger.

Her elder brother Gabe’s soft smile enhanced his tanned face. “Your group should arrive after seven tonight. Ready?”

Katie’s gaze moved to the bank of windows across the front of the store. Lightning flashed in the bright afternoon sky over the Gauley River. While no rain pelted the area yet, foul weather would arrive soon enough.

Gabe adjusted the display rack of wetsuits a fraction of an inch, then hobbled back to study his handiwork, dragging his walking cast.

She scuffed the toe of her sandal against the tile, letting the shoe slip to the floor. “I still don’t see why Christian can’t take this group. I need to run the projection numbers for next month.”
Seemed like as of late, their younger brother constantly shirked his duties.

“We’ve been over this.” While Gabe didn’t sigh aloud, the implication was clear.

“But you and I aren't the only Gallaghers working Gauley Guides. Dad left the business to all three of us.” She let out an exaggerated breath and tapped her pencil against the cash register. “I hate baby-sitting power executives who think they can tame the river.”

“It’s not like I asked to have my leg broken, Katie. I’d do it if I could.”

And he would. Gabe carried the brunt of the responsibility for the family business. Good thing he had such broad shoulders. Katie didn’t envy his load.

Guilt circled her heart, but the tight knot of irritation wouldn’t let loose of her nerves. She had a stack of bills she needed to figure out how they were going to pay, and she wanted to check out the new equipment they’d just received. Besides, she yearned for some solitude after last weekend’s trip with a group of rowdy college kids. “Christian’s better suited for these guys.”

I can’t wait until my copy arrives to see what happens. How can readers find you on the Internet?

HIDDEN IN THE STARS - Robin Caroll - One Free Book

Dear Readers, I’ve loved all the Quilts of Love novels that I’ve read, but I think this one may be my favorite. Robin has been a friend of mine for a number of years. She writes wonderful romantic suspense novels. This story had a unique new twist to the suspense. It kept me guessing for a long time. And the characters grabbed my heart and wouldn’t let go. This is definitely a must-read novel.

Bio: Robin Caroll is the author of 22 published novels. When she isn't writing, Robin spends time with her husband of 25 years, her three beautiful daughters, and two handsome grandsons, and their character-filled pets at home in Little Rock, Arkansas. She gives back to the writing community by serving as conference director for American Christian Fiction Writers. Her books have been named finalists in such contests as the Carol Award, HOLT Medallion, Daphne du Maurier, RT Reviewer's Choice Award, Bookseller's Best, and Book of the Year.

About the book: A quilt holds the secret to a killer still at large—and who his next victim will be.

Following an attack that killed her mother and stole her ability to speak, 21-year-old Sophia Montgomery has no choice but to accept her estranged grandmother's offer to return to their family home. Although detective Julian Frazier is working hard on the case, Sophia unknowingly frustrates him because her inability to speak thwarts her eyewitness evidence. The fact that Julian is undeniably attracted to Sophia doesn't help either, so Julian hides his feelings as concern for a trauma victim and focuses instead on finding the killer.

Little do they know, the clues to solving the case may be right in front of them, displayed in Sophia's mother's "special" quilt design. Who will realize the secret Sophia's unwittingly been hiding in plain sight? When the truth comes to light, will Sophia find her voice again? Or will the murderer—still at large—silence her forever?

Welcome back, Robin. Tell us a little about yourself and your background.
I love boxing. I love Hallmark movies. I love fishing. I love scrapbooking. Nope, I've never fit into the boxes people have wanted to put me in.

When I’m not writing, I devote my focus to ACFW as Executive Director. ACFW has done so much for me, I wanted to give something back.

I enjoy spending quality time with my husband of twenty-five years, three beautiful daughters, two handsome grandsons, and our character-filled pets at home.

How did you become interested in writing?
I’ve always loved to tell stories and to write. I’ve always kept a journal and storytelling is just part of who I am.

What compelled you to write a book on this subject?
As a young girl, my family lived in the country. We didn’t have many friends close enough during the winter where we could just hop on our bikes and ride down to a neighbor’s house. During those lonelier times, my mother taught me how to quilt. I will always associate quilts with the strength of the mother-daughter bond. When I heard about the Quilts of Love series, I wanted to be a part of it.
What is the main theme or point that you want readers to understand from reading your book? Are there any other themes present in the book?
The strength of the familial bond is the strongest thread in the story, but another theme would be the sacrifices we make for the people we love.
Are there some specific lessons you hope readers will learn and apply to their lives after reading your book?
I hope they will feel they were entertained, but also they will be reminded that no matter what their circumstances, what the Enemy means for evil, God will turn to good.

How does the book intertwine with God’s call on your life and how you are currently serving Him?
One day, fully frustrated with writing and on the verge of tears, I prayed the scary prayer: that if writing wasn’t what He called me to do, then I’d walk away from it, but He’d have to remove the desire from my heart because I wasn’t strong enough to do it myself. I was lucky enough to get my first contract not too long after that, but I truly was willing to walk away if that’s what He told me to do. It was really scary because, for me at least, writing was, in my mind, tied to my identity. I learned that writing, while important to me and I love it, is still what I do, not who I am. I love being an author, but I’m also so much more: wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, friend, etc.

Some of the reader mail I’ve received has put me in tears of praise for being allowed to share stories with readers. For instance, one reader wrote me after reading one of my books and thanked me for showing that it was possible to reconcile with God after being angry with Him. It truly blesses me for God to use me in such a way.

Do you have a favorite Scripture verse?
Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

When you are not writing, what do you like to do? Do you have any hobbies?
I’m an avid scrapbooker and card maker, and I enjoy making mini scrapbook albums. Of course, I love reading as well. And watching movies with my family. I also love cooking.

INJUSTICE FOR ALL - Robin Caroll - Free Book

Welcome back, Robin. You have a lot of books out now. What is your favorite setting to use in your books?
I love using Louisiana because that’s home for me…it’s in my heart. Louisiana is like a foreign country within the United States…the Cajun language and food, a totally different mindset, if you will.

What do you look for when you’re shopping for a book to buy for yourself?
I’m an author-buyer. If it’s by an author I know and trust, their new releases are for me. I also like to find new favorite authors in suspense and the subgenres, so I like reading reviews on Amazon, B&N, CBD.COM, Fictionfinder.com and also what my friends recommend. I want a story that demands I stay up all night to finish reading it! J

Give us a little tour of the setting for this book.
Injustice For All is centrally located in a fictional town, Hopewell, Louisiana. Of course, the bayou is the backdrop for all the murder and mayhem!

What other books do you have coming out soon?
The next book in the Justice Seekers is TO WRITE A WRONG and it releases in September 2012, then the final book in the series, STRAND OF DECEPTION will release in February 2013. I’m also very excited about a new writing adventure. My mentor and friend and uber-talented author, Colleen Coble, and I are co-writing a couple of YA books featuring the kids from her best-selling Rock Harbor series. The first one is slated for an April 2013 release and a second in fall 2013.

That is so cool. Is this novel part of a series or a stand-alone book?
This is the first book in the JUSTICE SEEKERS series.

Tell us about the story.
A federal judge is killed by the least expected suspect coupled with the most unexpected witness. This causes the witness to run from one of the most protective employer's an individual could be employed...the FBI. The utter fear a witness could entail is being tracked by an agency that she knows all to well. Their tactics, resources, devices, and determination could only spell disaster for anyone who tried to run. Her only chance to survive is to use all her cunning, imagination and experience with the Bureau to keep them off balance and off her trail.

I’m hooked. Please give us the first page of the book.
Prologue
“The hour of departure has arrived, and we go our ways I go to die, and you to live. Which is the better, God only knows.”
Socrates

Cha-chk.
Every muscle in my body stiffened, and my mouth went spitless. Chambering a round was a distinct sound, unmistakable.

My hand gripped the railing as questions swarmed my mind. A gun? In Daniel’s house? He’d been opposed to firearms ever since my father was murdered.

I took a step off the second-story landing. My palm itched to grip my own handgun at the moment, but knowing how Daniel felt, I’d never bring it over. Even when I spent the night.

“Put that gun away.” My godfather’s voice held a tremble as it drifted up to me. Never, ever, had I heard Daniel’s voice be anything but commanding.

My heart pounded harder than before—my ribs felt the punishment. My knees weakened.

“Not hardly. You just couldn’t leave well enough alone, could you, Daniel?”

I broke out into a cold sweat, recognizing that voice. And the angry tone. I should have—sure had heard it enough times. Was this real? Not him. I had to be mistaken. Because if he’s the one with the gun…

I descended, my feet making no sound on the plush stair runner. Reaching the first floor, I glanced at the alarm system control panel by the front door. No indicator lights ablaze. My throat and gut flipped places. Why have the security feature if Daniel wouldn’t use it? I padded across the cold marble floor of the darkened foyer and activated the silent alarm. The gated community security would arrive.

Would it be soon enough?

Bring it on!! How can readers find you on the Internet?

IN THE SHADOW OF EVIL - Robin Caroll - Free Book

I've been waiting for this book to release. Welcome back, Robin. Do you have a favorite genre to write? If so, what is it?

I can’t imagine not writing in the suspense and suspense subgenre. I grew up reading Trixie Belden, then Nancy Drew, before cutting my teeth on Mary Higgins Clark so mystery/suspense is what I enjoy reading, so naturally that’s what I enjoy writing.

If you didn’t live in the part of the country where you do, where would you live?

I don’t think I’d be able to survive anywhere outside of the south, although I would love the idea of a summer home in Maine. No idea why—I’ve never even been to Maine. LOL

When you get that summer home in Maine, you'll have to invite James and me. What foreign country would you like to visit and why?

Scotland, because I’d love to visit the castles and my husband wants to play St. Andrews Golf course.

I've heard that course is awesome. Describe what you think would be the most romantic vacation you could take.

Just about any vacation alone with my husband is what I think would be the most romantic.

Where would you like to set a story that you haven’t done yet?

Hmmm…for some reason, I think I’d like to set a story in Alabama or Georgia.

It's true that you're southern through and through. What is the main theme of this novel?

Forgiveness. I hope readers will gain insight in that sometimes, things are not always what they seem, but God is always good and always with us. I also wanted to show deep relationship dynamics of adult children and their parents...with misunderstandings and implied hurts.

Tell us about the story.

Informed by the real-life fallout of the U.S. economy and devastation caused by multiple hurricanes along the southern coast, In the Shadow of Evil tells a modern day story involving the exposure of a building rebound scam. Amidst the layers of unethical practices, supply shortages, and excess murders, a top Louisiana homicide detective loses his heart to a charitable contractor while uncovering a secret about his tragic past.

Oooo, I can't wait to read it. Please give us the first page of the book.

Eighteen Years Ago

What a night!

Maddox turned into the residential area and glanced at the digital display on the car’s dash—12:28. Great, late for curfew. He smiled. Being late was worth it when he’d had a hot date with Julie Cordon. Man, the girl was something else. Beautiful, sexy, and funny. Just being with her made him feel special. Made him forget ots of things, including time.

He was seventeen and shouldn’t have a curfew anyway. A senior in high school and he had to be home by midnight? All his pop’s doing.

Tyson Bishop . . . Mr. Air Force man, determined to force the entire family to live by rules and regulations.

But his dad was over foreign soil right now, jumping out of perfectly good airplanes. His mom understood better, wasn’t quite the stickler about curfews like his dad. Good thing too. Maddox was almost thirty minutes late tonight. Pop would blow his top and ground him for at least a month. Probably take away his car. But not Mom. She’d just caution him to pay closer attention to the time.

Launch into the whole spiel about responsibility and accountability. He could recite it from memory.

Maddox whipped into the driveway and pressed the garage door opener. The light from the kitchen door spilled into the garage. Mom would be up . . . waiting. He should’ve called. But being around Julie was like being caught in a time warp. Even the car’s interior held her smell. Light, flowery . . . teasing and
tempting.

He killed the engine and jogged up the steps, slipping his charming smile into place. His mom had never been able to stay mad or disappointed when he flashed his dimples at her. He’d promise to mow the grass tomorrow before Pop got home, and she’d forget all about his tardiness.

He shut the garage door behind him and entered the kitchen.

“Mom? I’m home.” The hint of roast lingered in the air.

The house was as silent as a tomb.

That's quite a hook! How can readers find you on the Internet?

FEAR NO EVIL - Robin Caroll - Free Book

Readers, I'm interviewing Robin Caroll with her newest romantic suspense. I got to read and review this book as an Advanced Reading Copy. It's a wonderful read. Even my husband, who isn't much of a reader, loved it. Click on the Reviews-Books I've Read tab at the top of the page and go down until you get to the review.

Welcome, Robin. How did this book come about?

I had the opportunity to speak with several former-members of a gang about their finding Jesus in prison. Hearing their stories of gang-life intrigued me. As a mother, learning of how gangs “recruit” children broke my heart. The idea of writing about gangs to raise awareness hit me and wouldn’t let me go until I wrote FEAR NO EVIL.

Tell us about the book’s cover and what makes it unique.

I have to say, my publisher’s art department ROCKS. This particular cover captures the eeriness of the Louisiana bayou, and the subtle eyes in the top trees….shiver! :-)

Please explain and differentiate between what’s fact and fiction in the book.

Of course the story is fiction, but so much of the details of gangs—how they operate, function, recruit, and react—is very much true. Also, the information regarding social services policies and procedures are quite factual.

How much research did you have to do for this book?

I was lucky that two previous gang members agreed to allow me intensive interviews. They were open and candid and only asked that I keep their identity secret for obvious reasons. Going into the realm of gangland, even by proxy, was so frightening.

What are some of the most interesting things you found about this subject that you weren’t able to use in the story?

Well, the REAL gang information. Names, criminal acts, etc.

What inspired and surprised you while you were writing the book?

What inspired me was the former gang members’ trek to find Jesus, disengage themselves from their gang, and helping lead others to Christ. Their journey story inspired me to keep going, even when the muck of the facts weighed heavily on my heart.

What do you hope the reader takes away from the story?

I hope readers realize how gangs operate, how all our children are at risk if we’re not careful, and how to help with the situation.

What is the next project you’re working on?

I just completed the 3rd book in this trilogy, IN THE SHADOW OF EVIL, which will release spring of 2011. Now I’m writing the first book, INJUSTICE FOR ALL, in a new trilogy.

What do you do when you have to get away from the story for a while?

Beg my husband to take me out to eat! LOL Or, play with my new grandson! :-)

Who, by the way, is beatuiful! Give him a hug for Grandma Lena, too. Please give us the first page of the book.

Prologue
Fifteen Years Ago
“No más.”

Carlos jerked off the earphones and sat up in bed. The stench of something burning filtered into his bedroom and stung his eyes.

Meth.

Drogas. Look at you. Repugnante.” His mother’s voice carried easily from the living room, thanks to the thin walls of the mobile home.

Great. His stepfather was strung out on drugs. Again. It’d gotten worse since he’d been laid off at the refinery. So had the fights.

Joya peque–a! Surely his little jewel hid in the corner of her closet, just like he’d taught her. He had to find her, hold her, and sing into her ear until Mamá and Robert finished yet another argument.

Carlos whipped off the covers, slipped out of bed, and crept over the beaten-down carpet to his door.

Readers, you don't want to miss what comes next.

DELIVER US FROM EVIL - Robin Caroll - Free Book

Robin, I'm so excited about this new direction your writing is taking. Since you’re being published regularly, what new avenues will your future books take?

I’m very excited about this series from B&H Publishing, the Pure Enjoyment line. These books are longer books, allowing me, as an author, to delve deeper into the plot and issues. But not to worry, all my currently contracted books are romantic suspenses, with hints of mystery.

What conferences will you be attending this year? Will you be a speaker at any of them?

Since I’m the ACFW Conference Director, naturally I’ll be at that conference. Last year I taught at other conferences, but with my deadlines and schedule, the only conference I’m planning on attending at this time is ACFW’s.

If you were in charge of planning the panel discussion at a writing conference, what topic would the panel cover, and who would you ask to be on the panel, and why?

Personally? I’d like a panel regarding the changing trends in the industry. I’d ask publishers, editors, and agents to sit on the panel and share their insights and thoughts.

How important is it to you to be active in writing organizations?

VITAL. I can’t imagine journeying in the publishing industry without the benefits of writing organizations.

Where in the community or your church do you volunteer?

Since I still have small children at home in elementary school, I tend to concentrate my efforts in that arena.

And a very worthy arena that is. I remember the days. Who are the five people who have made the most impact on your life, and how?

Jesus Christ, first and foremost, for being my Lord and Savior. Without Him, I am nothing. My husband…because he inspires me daily with his strength and faith and unwavering support. My mother…because she’s such a strong woman who instilled in me such a love of family. My children…because once we were blessed with them, my entire life changed. Each day, I learn something new from them. It’s amazing. My closest best friends…because without them, I think I’d go crazy. They love me despite my flaws and are such encouragers and supporters.

If you could write the inscription on your tombstone, what would it be?

Ahh…hmmm….well, I guess what I’d like to see most is this: “She lived her faith and loved well.”

Tell us about the featured book.

Deliver Us From Evil is truly a book of my heart. I watched a special on child trafficking that made me sick, yet I couldn’t stop watching it. As a mother of daughters, my heart ached at the atrocity these children live through. And while it sickened me, I knew I had to write a story to expose the horrors, as well as show justice can be served if people get involved.

Deliver Us From Evil is about a beautiful yet tough woman working in a beautiful yet tough setting, Brannon Callahan is a search and rescue helicopter pilot for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Strong faith and a decorated history of service have kept her one step ahead of on-the-job dangers, but there’s no precedent for what’s about to happen. After a blizzard takes down a small helicopter carrying U.S. Marshal Roark Holland (already haunted by a recent tragedy), Brannon must save him in more ways than one and safeguard the donor heart he’s transporting to a government witness on the edge of death. Otherwise the largest child trafficking ring in history—with shocking links from Thailand to Tennessee—will slip further away into darkness along the Appalachian Trail.

Wow, tell us more. Please share the first page with us.

Prologue

Where was backup?

Roark Holland squinted past the harsh streetlight glare to the vehicle that’d arrived only minutes ago. A van parked in a darkened part of the street. Parked at the curb of the old building housing the Pugsley family in Witness Protection. The family Roark needed to move to another safe house.

The family’s cover had been blown. With the Pugsley’s whereabouts known, their enemy would seek the total annihilation of anyone who could identify them, namely Mr. Pugsley.

Roark glanced in his rearview mirror. Still no team.

A light flipped on inside the van, just for a fraction of a second. But in that heartbeat, Roark took in the black jackets. The guns.

Grabbing his Beretta 98 in one hand, he pressed the transmit button on his radio with his other. “Demott, we have movement on the street. Where’s my backup?” He wasn’t prepared to go in alone—no tactical equipment, no comm, no extra ammo.

“Stay put, Holland. Team’s ETA, less than five minutes.”

The van door slid open.

“No time to wait. I’m going in.” Roark’s grip tightened on the Beretta.

Three men, decked out in black, stepped onto the road.

“Wait, Holland. Don’t go in without backup. That’s an order.”

BLACKMAIL - Robin Caroll - Free Book

Welcome back, Robin. As an author, I know it takes a lot of people to birth each book. Who were the people involved in the birthing of this book, and what were their contributions?

Wow, Blackmail had a lot of people contributing. My sister, Cindy Pittman, first and foremost. She’s in the oil and gas business in Louisiana, so having her to feed me information was vital. She is also the one who connected me with Charlie Boyd, an employee with the state in the conservation department. He walked me through oil rigs and facilities, even sending pictures, and helped me with some plot details. As always, my crit partners: Ronie Kendig, Dineen Miller, and Heather Tipton were invaluable in their input. And Cara Putman, Camy Tang and Cheryl Wyatt were also gracious enough to read my manuscript and make suggestions. I have two family members who serve as "readers" for my books, Lisa Burroughs and Krystina Harden, who give me great feedback from a reader’s point of view.

If you teach or speak. What’s coming up on your calendar?

I just finished a hectic schedule of doing both, and since it’s the summer and my children are out of school, I’ve taken some time off. I am presenting at a writers’ group in Shreveport, Louisiana in August and September is the ACFW conference, of which I’m the conference director, so I’m pretty busy with that.

If you had to completely start over in another place, where would you move, and why?
Hmmm. That’s a tough one. I’ve had to do that before. If finances weren’t an issue, I think I’d like to start over in Paris. Or Italy. Or Greece. LOL Something totally different than what I’ve experienced in my life thus far.

If you could only tell aspiring novelists one thing, what would it be?

You have to love words, the telling of a story to survive. It’s not enough just to want to write a book. Or be published. Or be successful. You truly have to love stories. This is a hard business with lots of disappointments and frustrations along the way. If you don’t have a deep love for stories, you might never succeed.

You’ve been asked to be in charge of a celebrity cruise. Who would you ask to take part, and why?

Stephen King, because well, he’s Stephen King and I’d love to just sit and chat with him. Dean Koontz, for the same reason. And I think I’d put Stephanie Meyer and JK Rowling on the yacht as well—think there would be some very stimulating conversations going around. Especially if I added in Angie Hunt, James Scott Bell, and Randy Alcorn. Oh, that could be a lot of fun. :-)

Tell us about the featured book?
Blackmail is the final book in the bayou series. It was a little bittersweet to say goodbye to my friends at Lagniappe, but I was glad to have the opportunity to write the final book, giving closure to all the folks in my bayou town. Blackmail focuses on Sadie Thompson, who some will remember from all the way back in book one. The resident "bad girl" of Lagniappe. This is her story of redemption and turning her life around.

What is next for you?

I’m super excited about the upcoming release of my first trade size romantic suspense, Deliver Us From Evil. B&H Publishing releases the book in February. It’s a story that dug deep into my heart back in 2005 and deals with the very vital issue of human trafficking. I hope everyone will read the book and enjoy it as much I loved writing it.

You'll have to come back in February when it releases. Where can the readers find you on the Internet?
Thanks, Lena. I always love visiting your blog. :-)
And I love having you, Robin.

Author Robin Caroll - FRAMED! - Free Book

This is Robin's first Love Inspired Suspense series with other authors. Welcome, Robin, I just love reading these series by Love Inspired Suspense. What is the name of the series this book is in, and where in the series does it occur?

The series is "Without A Trace" and my book, Framed! is book 2 in the series.

Who came up with the idea for the series?

The brilliant editors at Steeple Hill came up with the overview, setting, and characters. They incorporated the continuing elements that is seen from book-to-book in the series. Then, we six authors began discussing,
brainstorming, and going back and forth until we'd each hashed out our individual plots.

I know that working on a series that weaves together takes a lot of work. How did your team schedule the work?

I was blessed to have five wonderful women and authors to work with for my first continuity series. We chatted a lot online, I talked on the phone with one of them for more hours than I probably should admit to (lol), and we sent each other our synopses and then final rough drafts. It was such a wonderful learning experience for me, and a honor to work with these esteemed ladies.

Did you find it hard or easy to work within the series framework?

That's a tough question. Some of the points were difficult, but the other authors and I discussed and brainstormed a LOT, and then if we needed to change something in the overview, we'd take it to the editor for approval and input. There is a LOT of teamwork that goes into these series--from all the authors and the entire team at Steeple Hill.

What other books have you had published?

My bayou series....Bayou Justice, Bayou Corruption, Bayou Judgment, Bayou Paradox, and Bayou Betrayal. All published with Steeple Hill Love Inspired Suspense.

When you aren't writing or spending time with your family, what is your favorite activity?

Sleeping? LOL Seriously, between church, family, and deadlines, add to that ACFW business as president last year, sleep is a BIG commodity around my house!

Where do you do most of your writing?

In my office, on my desktop. When I need a change, or the kids beg me to come out and play, I take my laptop and sit outside on my patio. The back of our house faces a wooded area with a creek running through it, so it's nice for a change of location.

What part of the country do you live it? And why do you like that part of the country?

The South--is there any other place? LOL I'm southern through-and-through, so I can't imagine putting down roots anyway north of the Mason-Dixon line.

Tell us about the featured book.

Framed! is a modern-day Romeo and Juliet story--Ava and Max were high-school sweethearts, torn apart by feuding families. Years later, they're back in Loomis, Louisiana where a rash of deaths have occurred, one of them being Ava's brother. When Max is implicated in the crime, Ava must decide to follow her heart and believe in his innocence, or let the evidence dictate what she believes.

How can my readers find you on the Internet?

Easy.... http://www.robincaroll.com/

And I love having you, Robin.

Author Robin Caroll - BAYOU BETRAYAL - Free Book

One of my favorite authors, and a good friend, is back with us today. Welcome, Robin. By the way, I love the picture. Why did you become an author?

Because I loved telling stories. Always have, even as a young child. Just ask my momma! LOL

If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?

To be on the American Publishers Clearing House prize patrol! :D

If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?

Pre-Civil War . . . back in the day when ladies were ladies and men were gentlemen.

And I loved the clothing back then. What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?

Maine, and I haven’t a clue why!

Part of my romantic suspense, Who Am I?, is set in Maine. How about a foreign country you hope to visit?

Italy
I'm holding out for Australia. What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?

What isn’t He teaching me all the time? LOL Actually, I’ve been working through a study revolving mindset and professing positive words over our own lives.

Yes, we often speak self-defeating words. Now, Robin, tell us about the featured book.

Bayou Betrayal is the 5th book in the bayou series. It’s Deputy Gary Anderson’s story and for the first time, I wrote a heroine who was a widow. I think being separated from my husband for 4 months due to extenuating circumstances recently really helped me dig deep into that emotion of mourning the loss of our spouse with us every day.

Was is only 4 months? It seemed much longer to me, too, as I prayed for all of you. How can readers find you on the Internet?

Thank you, Robin, for spending part of this busy season with us.

Author Robin Caroll - TORRENTS OF DESTRUCTION - Free Book

I'm really glad to have Robin with us today. She's the president of American Christian Fiction Writers, and the national conference will be next week. She's a very busy lady.
By the way, if you live anywhere near Minneapolis, be sure to come to the public booksigning at the Mall of America on Saturday, September 20, from 1 - 3 pm. 126 authors will be in the Best Buy rotunda, the courtyard by Bloomingdales, and in the corridor between. You'll get to meet a lot of special people.
Welcome, Robin. Why did you become an author?

I grew up being a reader and loving to get lost in a story. Writing has always been a vital part of who I am.

If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?

To be on the Publisher’s Clearing House Prize Patrol! :D

Then you could bring my millions to my house! ;-) If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?

Definitely back in the antebellum times. But I would’ve hated the corsets and hoop skirts.

I always told my husband I was born out of my time. I always loved wearing long dresses, even before the maxis came in. What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?

Hmmm…that’s a hard one. I think I’d like to visit New York, just to say I did. :D

I haven't been to New York, but I've been to Washington, DC. I think every American should go and see all the monuments and memorials to our counntry's history. How about a foreign country you hope to visit?

Italy

What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?

What HASN’T He taught me recently? LOL Seriously, He deals with me daily on life lessons. But most recently? Forgiveness, even when it isn’t asked for.

That's a hard one.
Now, Robin, tell us about the featured book.

TORRENTS OF DESTRUCTION is a book that I got the idea of when my husband returned from a white water rafting trip on the Gauley River in West Virginia. As I watched the video, I kept thinking “what if” such and such happened. This book was the answer to my “what if” game. Raging rapids aren't the only thing causing turbulence in the lives of a river rafting guide and an undercover FBI agent ... catching criminals is as dangerous as the undercurrent of attraction they have for each other.

I can hardly wait to read it. How can readers find you on the Internet?

www.robincaroll.com but to order to order the book, visit www.underdogpress.com

All right, Readers, leave a comment for a chance to win a free copy, but check out both Robin's website and the Underdog Press site.

Author Robin Caroll - BAYOU PARADOX - Free Book

I'm pleased to welcome back Robin Caroll to the blog. By the way, Robin, I like the new photo. We're talking about her next book in the Louisiana Bayou series--Bayou Paradox.

Robin, what first got you interested in writing suspense?

That’s the genre I love to read, even as a child. I loved the Trixie Beldon and Nancy Drew series so much I reread them until the pages were nearly worn out of the spine. My passion is in mystery/suspense, so I knew that’s where I should be writing.

You are president of American Christian Fiction Writers.

Tell us how this has changed your life? It’s definitely made me budget my time tighter! LOL Seriously, it’s a labor of love because I wanted to give back to an organization that’s given me so much. Because of ACFW, I learned so many of the basic writing skills, learned how to polish and hone skills, met my crit partners and my mentor—all because of ACFW.

What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?

The funny thing is, I don’t plan or plot my spiritual themes. I actually have no idea what they are when I start the book. I begin praying for the direction of the book when I start plotting and getting to know my characters, but I wait for God to give me the spiritual theme He has planned for the book. I’ve learned it’s much easier to wait on Him to give it to me, than to try and run ahead on my own and then later have to change it anyway! LOL

I understand that. What other books of yours are coming out soon?

Bayou Betrayal, the 5th book in the series, releases in January 2009. Bayou Restitution, the 6th and final book in the bayou series, releases in July 2009. I also was honored to be part of a Love Inspired Suspense continuity and my book in that, Framed!, will release in February 2009.

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?

Stephen King, because as a writer, his mind intrigues me so much.

How long have you known that you wanted to be novelist?

For as long as I can remember, actually. Even back in grade school, that was my dream. To be living it now, honoring God in doing so, well, that’s amazing to me every day!

What can you tell authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?

Don’t give up! Keep on learning, going to conferences and networking, studying and trying.

Robin, rell us about the featured book.

Bayou Paradox is Tara LeBlanc’s story. Writing it was a lot of fun as so much of Tara’s personality belongs to my eldest daughter.

Here’s the blurb: The untamed Louisiana bayou is not for the faint of heart. But until now, Tara LeBlanc has always considered it a sanctuary, its lush foliage a source of medicinal healing. What evil has infiltrated her haven? Two elderly women she loves lie near death, and Tara knows their illnesses are no accident. Only one man can save Tara from the same fate: Sheriff Bubba Theriot. The strong-willed lawman throws his all into protecting her, laying his heart on the line as well as his life. Now they both stand to lose it all as a killer gets ready to pounce . . .

Author Robin Caroll - BAYOU JUDGMENT - Free Book

We're talking to Robin Caroll today about the third book in her Bayou series. Here's a picture of Robin (in black) with her agent Kelly Mortimer.

Welcome, Robin, God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?

I haven’t a clue, and that’s part of the fun. Seeing where He leads. It’s never boring, that’s for sure! LOL

Tell us a little about your family.

I’ve been married for over 18 years to the same man! We have three beautiful daughters, 17, 8, and 5. I’m blessed by their love and support of what I do.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?

Actually, I’ve “dissected” books for years, but I just didn’t realize that’s what I was doing until I became a writer. LOL Reading now, poor writing jumps out at me. If that happens, the author must be a great storyteller for me to keep reading. There’s an ABA author who I’ve loved for years….the writing isn’t all that great, but she’s a master storyteller!

What are you working on right now?

Proposals, of course! LOL

Don't we all? What outside interests do you have?

Aside from church, I try to be very accessible and visible at my children’s school. I go up and have lunch with them (the school food has gotten worse than the horrid I remember, BTW), I attend all functions, and I’m a co-room mother for the two youngest class. My husband and I take the girls fishing in our community pond at least weekly when weather permits.

How do you choose your settings for each book?

Being born and raised in the South, it’s what’s natural to me. The weather, foliage, dialect…. I set all my books in the South.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?

Egads—HISTORICAL? LOL Hmmm…. Kennedy….so I could find out what REALLY happened! LOL Seriously, I don’t dwell in the past too much.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?

That it’s HARD WORK. LOL It’s funny, now when my husband tells people I’m an author, the most common response, other than “what of yours is in bookstores” is “You know, one day, when I have time, I’m going to write a book.” I bite my tongue not to laugh because I used to think it was just a matter of actually doing it. The process and learning curve is so much more. So, in response, I just smile and reply with, “Good luck with that.” :D

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?

When is He not teaching me a million things? LOL I’m not one of those people who can hear His still, small voice. Nope, I’m one that He pulls out the 2 X 4 on and smacks me upside the head. LOL And it works for us. That’s our relationship. But, to answer your question more specifically, He’s been working with me on total trust in Him in every aspect of my life. Just because I think something’s a minor thing in the big scheme, doesn’t mean He doesn’t intend to use it for a bigger something later. So instead of trying to “handle” the little issues myself, He’s teaching me to seek His direction even with the small stuff. :D

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?

As if I know? LOL I don’t think any of us are ever successful. I mean, sure, authors can hit the bestseller lists (I wish! LOL) and win awards (I wish! LOL) and make a lot of money (I wish! LOL) but I personally don’t believe any of us on earth can be successful because this is not our home. Okay, to answer your question and get off my soapbox…..three things I’ve learned…..

1-have critique partners and/or mentor you trust to look at your work and give you honest and helpful feedback.

2-enjoy what you do, even on the days you HAVE to get down so many words.

3-surround yourself with other writers because, trust me on this, only other writers will “get” you sometimes.

And sometimes, even they won't. 1Tell us about the featured book.

Bayou Judgment was challenging to write, yet tugged most at my heartstrings. My heroine has cerebral palsy, but is so strong in faith. I used a lot of my niece’s characteristics in creating this character because my niece has cp, and the research into the treatment and surgeries of cp were easily accessible through my niece’s time with Shriner’s Hospital. Creating a mystery/suspense for the heroine really stretched me as a writer, and my hero? Well, I fell a little in love with him, too. I tend to do that…fall in love a bit with each of my heroes. But isn’t that the fun part of writing?
