A DREAM OF MIRACLES - Ruth Reid - One Free Book, Plus More

Bio: Ruth Reid is the award-winning and bestselling author of the Heaven on Earth and Amish Wonders series. Her novels have hit multiple best-seller lists including CBD, CBA, and ECPA. Ruth is also a pharmacist who lives in Florida with her husband, three children, and a dog that acts more like a cat. Find her on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Author-Ruth-Reid/183828688320022 or online at: ruthreid.com

Welcome back, Ruth. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?
Faith that moves mountains; Hope that rises; Love everlasting

What other books of yours are coming out soon?
Coming out this fall is A Flicker of Hope, which is part of the Amish Home anthology along with authors: Beth Wiseman, Amy Clipston, Kathy Fuller.  Also, my first book in the Amish Mercies Series, Abiding Mercy will be out in 2017.

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?
I’d like to spend time with the members of the Mercy Me band. I often listen to their music before I start writing and have found inspiration in their songs. I’d love to sit down for coffee and pick their brains.

I love Mercy Me and their music, too. What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?
Wow, that’s a toss up between Peter and Paul. Paul experienced the resurrected power of Jesus Christ in so many miraculous ways, and Peter was the only one to get out of the boat and walk on water. On second thought, I’d like to meet the cripple that Jesus healed (John 5: 2-12). This man had faith to wait at the pool even knowing he had no helpers to put him in the water at the right time—and then he met Jesus. I’d love to meet the healed man and see what became of his life. We know in the Bible he gave account of his healing to the Jewish authorities, but did he continue to share his testimony with others or did he simply accept the gift and go on his way quietly?

Interesting questions. How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?
Writing is really about perseverance. It’s hard, but if you regard a rejection letter as ‘not now’ it’s easier to keep moving forward.

A Dream of Miracles takes place in a small Amish community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Book blurb:
Mattie Diener can barely keep it together. A young Amish widow and mother of two young children, she faces the lingering heartbreak of lost love, her son’s mysterious illness, and a torrent of accusations that threat to undo her.

Bo Lambright is a fast-rising social services investigator whose high-society mother won’t rest until she finds his Mrs. Right. Despite Bo’s worldly success, the raw ache of a shadowy past and a series of unsettling dreams have left him reeling.

When Mattie and Bo cross paths, all signs point to disaster. Yet as they face a crucible of trials and tragedies together, longings begin to stir that seem destined only to end in more heartbreak. Is a miracle possible—not only of healing but of forbidden love? What secrets lie in Bo’s dreams? And will Mattie find the courage to face her uncertain future . . . or will she simply run away?

Please give us the first page of the book.
“Mei sohn needs to see Doktah Roswell. It’s an emergency.” Mattie Diener stood before the receptionist’s window with three-year-old Nathan on one hip, and Amanda, her eighteen-month-old daughter, teetered on her other.

The young woman looked up from her computer screen and slid the sign-in log closer to Mattie. “What’s Nathan’s problem today, Mrs. Diener?”

“He’s nett himself.” Mattie gently lowered Amanda to the floor at her side in order to free her hand to sign the forms. She jotted the pertinent information on the log, then handed the clipboard back to the receptionist.

Mattie cradled Nathan tighter to her chest as heat radiated from his little body. She’d given him feverfew earlier, but this time the herb did little to bring his fever down. Mattie placed her hand on his moist forehead. “He’s burning up.”

The woman’s eyes widened as if seeing Nathan for the first time. “And I see he has a rash.” She removed the headset that connected her to the telephone, rolled her chair back from the desk, and stood.

“Jah, it’s a—” Heat rash.

The receptionist held up one finger. “Stay right there. I’ll get the nurse.” She disappeared behind the partitioned wall of file cabinets.

Little Amanda clung to Mattie’s legs, her round face buried in the folds of Mattie’s dress. She should have asked her best friend Grace to watch Amanda. Her daughter was shy around strangers. Although not a bad thing, it did make her daughter clingy, even more so when she was overly tired. Amanda’s crankiness started last week when the temperature had risen above eighty, a record high for the second week of June in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

One of my daughters had an over zealous daycare worker and a new CPS caseworker investigate her and her husband about their young son. It was a very hard, unpleasant experience, and the case was eventually dismissed. I’m eager to see how this story moves along. How can readers find you on the Internet?
I love interacting with readers on my Author Ruth Reid Facebook page.

A MIRACLE OF HOPE - Ruth Reid - One Free Book, Plus Much More

About the author: Ruth Reid is a CBA and ECPA best-selling author of the Heaven on Earth series. She's a full-time pharmacist who resides in Florida with her husband and three children.

Welcome back, Ruth. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
Lord willing, more books!

Tell us a little about your family.
My husband and I met in pharmacy school at Ferris State University. We have three children, Lexie, who is in college, Danny, who recently got his driver’s permit, and Sarah, who is thirteen and my prayer warrior. We also have two dogs. Zyvox, a Weimaraner and Lady Bird, a Jack Russell.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
Yes! I can’t seem to read a book without analyzing it. I think that’s from being involved with a critique group for so many years.

What are you working on right now?
I’m currently working on an Amish Christmas novella and A Woodland Miracle, book 2 in the Amish Wonders series.

What outside interests do you have?
I love photography and I’m learning how to quilt.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I grew up in northern Michigan and love writing about places where I’ve either visited or lived.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
I would like to find out what it was like to step out of a boat in the middle of a storm and walking on water, so I would choose Peter. His journey of faith has always inspired me.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
I wished I had a better understanding of social media. I think it might not have seemed overwhelming if I would have blogged or had a website prior to being published. But just like writing, you have to start somewhere.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
God’s timing is perfect, and He wants to lead us on the path He has placed before us. Sometimes, instead of taking baby steps, I run. Lately, I’ve been reminded that He never leaves my side, but I need to be mindful of the pace.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
1) Seek God and listen for His direction
2) Join a godly critique group
3) Set a realistic word count and write every day.

Tell us about the featured book.
A Miracle of Hope is an Amish romance about a pregnant, out of wedlock, woman who needs a fresh start and a man who needs someone to care for his deaf daughter. Neither of them is thrilled about a marriage of convenience, but they enter into the arrangement with a firm understanding—it isn’t about love—until someone breaks the rules.

BRUSH OF ANGEL'S WINGS - Ruth Reid - Free Book

Ruth Reid Bio:
Ruth Reid is a full-time pharmacist who lives in Dade City, Florida, with her husband and three children. Her fascination for the Amish began twenty-years ago when she skipped college classes to watch a barn raising. Today, she’s still captivated by the simple ways of the Amish lifestyle. Brush of Angel’s Wings is her second book in the Heaven on Earth series. When Ruth is not writing, she enjoys photography and quilting.

Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I write inspirational books hoping to encourage faith and spread God’s love.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
This is a tough question! I’ve been blessed with so many memorable days that choosing one is difficult. However, I’ll never forget how happy I was on the day my son received a liver transplant. After nine months, the Lord healed my son and answered my prayers. I was elated!

How has being published changed your life?
I wouldn’t say my life has changed drastically, after all, I still work my night job. I do have a lot more emails to answer.

What are you reading right now?
Self-Editing for Fiction Writers: How to Edit Yourself into Print; by Dave King and Renni Brown. This is a great book to reread between drafts. It stays on my desk.

What is your current work in progress?
I’m currently working on edits for An Angel at Her Side, the third book in my Heaven on Earth Series and scheduled for release January 2013.

What would be your dream vacation?
I’ve always wanted to hike the Appalachian Trail, but completing the entire 2,180-mile trail isn’t likely—so I’d love to take a European cruise.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
Since I write Amish romance, a farm setting plays a large role. In the Heaven on Earth series, I write about the Michigan settlement I lived nearby while I was in college.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
I would love to sit down and talk with my grandmother in her right mind. She’s had Alzheimer’s disease for several years and isn’t able to recognize people or communicate.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
I love photography, especially taking pictures of old barns. I also started quilting. I’m not very good at sewing so it tends to frustrate me enough to get back to writing.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
I struggle to balance the right amount of details. Because I tend to teeter between too much or not enough descriptive details, I pepper them into the story after the first draft.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
I think the best advice I could offer a beginning author is to get into a good critique group. It takes a thick skin, but the rewards are exponential! If anyone is interested in what you should expect from a critique group or how you can become connected, I’m willing to help you in any way I can. You can reach me on my author Facebook page (see the bottom of the page for the link).

Tell us about the featured book.
A buggy racer, a hardworking field-hand, and a terrible cook, Rachel does not fit her Amish community’s standards for an eligible bride. Jordan spends a short time on the Amish farm as a hired hand and concludes the strict lifestyle is not for him. She’s determined to run him off while he’s trying to earn enough money to leave.  But there isn’t just human interaction at play. Nathaniel, an angel of God, sees the potential in Jordan and Rachel’s hearts from heaven’s perspective. His goal is to shepherd them toward the path of healing and love – if only they listen.

THE PROMISE OF AN ANGEL - Ruth Reid - Free Book

Ruth Reid Bio:
Ruth Reid is a full-time pharmacist who lives in Dade City, Florida, with her husband and three children. Her fascination for the Amish began twenty-years ago when she skipped college classes to watch a barn-raising. Today, she’s still captivated by the simple ways of the Amish lifestyle, and in her debut novel, The Promise of an Angel, she writes about what started her curiosity with the Amish—a barn raising. When Ruth is not working, she loves photography.

Welcome, Ruth. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
A friend told me after reading my first book how she looked for me, but found herself. I told her she would have to piece together a little from every character to find me.

In Brush of Angel’s Wings, the second book in the Heaven on Earth series, the main character is a bad cook and unable to keep her sewing stitches straight. That’s me; my quilting friends would confirm that I spend more time ripping out stitches then sewing them right the first time.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
I gave my sister, Joy, a haircut. She asked me to trim her straight, no bangs, shoulder length hair, and by the time I finished evening-up the sides, she had sideburns and spiked bangs. I should be dead—but Joy is much more understanding than anyone I know.  I still don’t know why I thought I could cut hair…

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
I was in 5th grade when a teacher encouraged me to enter the Young Author’s Writing Contest. Writing that 12 page short story ignited the desire in my heart.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
My interest ranges from non-fiction, pharmacology journals and frontier medicine, to most genres of fiction. I love a good “who done it” mystery and, one day, I plan to use my pharmaceutical background to write a medical thriller…or, a historical romance rich with frontier medicine.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
As the song goes, “…Without God, I can do nothing. Without Him I’d surely fail…” I’ve learned that when my sanity starts slipping it’s because I’ve allowed myself to become distracted and I’ve taken my focus off of God. When this happens, I increase my prayer time, take long baths, and talk to friends who help get me back on track.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
Since most Amish names are Biblical, I tend to choose my character’s names from the Bible. Another resource I use is a log a dear friend provided of the district divisions, family names, dates of births, deaths, and when the family moved to the Michigan settlement that I write about in my books.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
My three children love the Lord.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
I’d like to be an Eagle. Two reasons: They soar, and Eagles are protected species.

What is your favorite food?
Pepperoni and black olive pizza.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
I don’t know that I’ve totally overcome it, but I fear sharing my work. Let’s face it not everyone will respond to your writing with the same unconditional love like mom. I remember how nerve racking it was when I first joined the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) critique group, but I am so grateful I did. I found out everyone in my group was nervous.

Tell us about the featured book.

Interrupting the ordered routine of the Mecosta County Amish settlement, an angelic visitor awakens Judith to a new faith.

All Judith Fischer has ever wanted is to marry within her community and raise a family of her own. She longs for the day when her parents will allow Levi Plank to officially court her.

But on the day Judith suspects Levi will ask her parent’s permission, her younger brother Samuel has an accident under her charge. Rushing to Samuel’s aid, Judith spies a strange man helping him; a man she later believes was an angel.

When she shares her conviction with her family and close friends, she is shocked to find that no one believes her, including Levi. In the days following the accident, the angel visits Judith with information that may guide her down the path of faith, should she choose to follow.

As her community slowly distances themselves, only one person is willing to stand up for her – the bishop’s son, Andrew Lapp. But can he convince the settlement to listen to her? With a show of faith that flies in the face of her conservative upbringing, can Judith hold strong to the promise that there are even greater things in store for those who believe?
