THE MERCY TREE - Sharlene MacLaren - One Free Book

Welcome back, Sharlene. You have a lot of books out now. What is your favorite setting to use in your books? Well, since I write historical fiction, my favorite time period is the mid- to late-1800s, and I think my favorite settings are little towns in the Midwest. I love small towns in Kentucky and Tennessee primarily, but I’ve also written stories with settings in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, Michigan (my home state) and... well, my current work in progress will be a wagon train journey set in 1865, so we’ll be passing through Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and so on.

What do you look for when you’re shopping for a book to buy for yourself? Oh, I love romance, have always been a huge fan, but I love a story with lots of layers and plenty of plot depth. In other words, it doesn’t have to be just about the romance. I also love multi-faceted characters, the kind that you either learn to love or look upon with great disdain before the book’s conclusion. I am not a fan of a simplistic stories, so the back cover blurb had better catch my attention in a good way or I will put it back on the shelf.

Give us a little tour of the setting for this book. Interestingly, The Mercy Tree’s setting is Muskegon, MI, my old stomping ground. While I didn’t grow up in Muskegon, I did grow up about 12 miles north of it, and basically know Muskegon forwards and backwards. That made my research easier than most of my other books. Seeing as I was born in 1948 (yes, I’m ancient. Ha!), I still have a very vivid memory of the 1950s, which is the era in which my story takes place. The church I use in the plot, Church of the Open Door, was a very popular, active church in its day, so I snagged that name, but the premise of my story concerning a pastor who discovers he has a son from a brief affair he’d had ten years prior, is completely fictional. Muskegon is situated in central West Michigan, on the beautiful sandy shores of Lake Michigan, home of some lovely state parks, wonderful sand dunes, camping grounds, and restaurants.

What other books do you have coming out soon? As I stated earlier, the project I’m currently working on will be about a woman of twenty-six and her twelve-year-old nephew who join a wagon train to escape the abusive clutches of her nephew’s father. This book will probably release sometime in the fall of 2024, and it will be my 24th novel.

Please give us a glimpse inside your home. My husband and I have lived in the same home since 1986. It has undergone three major additions, though, so there’s not too much about it that’s original. We despise the idea of ever moving though because we love our neighborhood, so we just keep adding onto it and making little changes here and there in the way of updates. It is a typical ranch-style home, four bedrooms, three baths, two fireplaces, a large kitchen, and a finished basement. It is certainly far from spectacular, but in a word, it’s “home”. I don’t foresee moving until our two daughters say, “Mom, Dad, it’s time for a condo.” And even then, we’ll probably go out kicking and screaming. Haha.

Is this novel part of a series or a stand-alone book? This is a stand-alone novel.

Tell us about the story. It’s 1955, when scandalous affairs are never talked about, divorce is rare, a wife is a “homemaker” more often than not, and every Christian home displays its family Bible front and center. Certainly, a well-respected pastor in the conservative city of Muskegon, Michigan, would never be caught in the middle of a heinous secret that could ruin his career and break up his beautiful marriage and family. Or would he?
When Henry Griffin was stationed in occupied Japan in the mid-1940s, he met Rina Hamada, a Japanese woman who fell head over heels for him. Despite having a young wife and baby daughter waiting at home in the States, Henry had too much to drink one night, and one thing led to another… He knew it was wrong. He struggled with guilt and expressed his resistance, but she professed her love and continued to pursue him.
Now, ten years later, a letter from Japan arrives and threatens to upend Henry’s world. What to do and how to tell his wife are just the beginning of his troubles. Tough questions about faith, redemption, and preserving his reputation bring us here, under the shade of The Mercy Tree.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Prologue

“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” Hebrews 4:14, 15 (Revised Standard Version)

July, 1946

Tokyo, Japan

The smells of fish, nicotine, and sweat lay heavy in the hot, sticky air. Shipping docks littered with cigarette butts, animal waste, food scraps and whatnot, bustled with activity as soldiers carrying haversacks hurried past, and squawking ducks and gulls swooped down to peck at the muddy earth. Hot bodies pressed together in a none too straight line, all vying for a spot on the monstrous steamer, a converted battleship, that would take them back to their beloved homeland, America. Ever since the United States had started occupying Japan, American troops had come and gone, serving months-long stints to help keep the peace among military and civilians as well as rebuild the war-torn country.

Private First-Class Henry Griffin held his place in line amongst hundreds of other soldiers and their wives, awaiting his turn to board. He adjusted the thick leather strap of his overlarge backpack across his shoulder. It weighed heavy with souvenirs and a myriad of belongings he’d collected over the past year. Babies wailed, dogs barked, seagulls squawked, and men laughed and visited, some smoking while they stood in line, others reading American newspapers or magazines, and still others simply standing on the dock, shifting their weight with hot impatience as a grueling sun beat down on them.

Orders from one of the commanders rang out from a crackling loud speaker, but the words were lost on Henry’s ears due to a discontented baby squalling and squirming in his mother’s arms just ten or so feet in front of him. Its mother reached for a bottle under the flap of a bag she carried, her soldier husband trying to lend assistance. She shoved the nipple end into the infant’s mouth, and sweet silence followed. The line moved forward a few steps. For the hundredth time that day, Henry thought about his wife Nora. How would it be when they first locked eyes? A twinge of excitement mixed with guilt stirred inside him. They had talked about whether she should join him in Japan, but with a new baby, they’d decided it best she move in with her parents until his return. He wished now he’d insisted she come. No doubt it would’ve been better in the long run. He tried to push aside his tangled emotions by withdrawing his wallet from his back pocket and taking out the wrinkled photograph he kept stored between a few dollar bills. Nora had sent him the photo of his daughter Paige just after her first birthday. Now she was a full sixteen months old. How much had she grown? How many teeth did she have? How long was her wispy blond hair? Was it long enough for a barrette?

HEART OF MERCY - Sharlene MacLaren - One Free Book

Readers, I was privileged to read Heart of Mercy for endorsement. Here's what I said: Heart of Mercy the first book in Sharlene MacLaren's new series, will delight her fans. The characters grabbed my heart on the first page and didn't let go. With a feud between two mountain families that had lasted several generations, and a strong young man and an equally strong young women, who both needed a spouse the sparks fly literally and figuratively. The Tennesee mountain Romeo and Juliet story carried me along through the roller-coaster ride of a tale. It's the best book Sharlene has ever written. (Of course, I think that when each new book comes out.)

Welcome back, Sharlene. I love your new author picture. Do you have a favorite genre to write? If so, what is it?
My preferred genre is historical romance, although I have published three contemporary stand-alone novels.

If you didn’t live in the part of the country where you do, where would you live?
Well, gosh, if I could talk my entire family into coming with me (uh-hum) I’d really love to live further south where I didn’t have to contend with all that wet white stuff in the winter.

I’m in Texas, and we’ve had a much colder winter than usual with one really bad ice storm that lasted longer than usual, too. What foreign country would you like to visit and why?
Is Hawaii a foreign country? (Just kidding.) Someday, I’d love to visit Australia!

Describe what you think would be the most romantic vacation you could take.
Oh my, I think I’ve already gone. My hubby took me on a Mediterranean Cruise for our 25th anniversary with ports of call in Naples, Barcelona, Florence, and several other romantic spots. For my 60th birthday, he took me to London, England, and Paris, France. Hawaii is romantic, right? That’s where I’d love to go next…someday.

Where would you like to set a story that you haven’t done yet?
So far, I’ve set stories in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and NYC. I love the south, so I’m considering a southern historical set in Missouri – think Ozark Mountain Country.

The Ozarks are beautiful. I grew up in the Ozarks of Northwest Arkansas. What is the main theme of the featured novel?
Heart of Mercy is the first in my Tennessee Dreams series, and I’d say its central theme is built around the very title itself – mercy. Besides mercy, though, it’s a story of forgiveness, new beginnings, and family healing.

Tell us about the story.
Mercy Evans has known a great deal of heartache and hardship in her 26 years. She lost her mother at a young age and was only sixteen when her father was killed in a brawl sparked by a family feud spanning several generations. Yet, Mercy never doubts the presence and provision of her Heavenly Father. When a house fire claims the lives of her two best friends, leaving their two young sons as orphans, Mercy offers to be their guardian. It seems simple enough, until the judge mandates that the boys be placed with a married couple.

Samuel Connors is a man adrift. Despite the success of the blacksmith business he inherited from his father, he senses a void unaffected by material rewards. His mother keeps nagging him to find a wife, but the only woman who comes to mind is Mercy Evans. What would she want with the man whose father murdered hers?

Mercy is determined to do whatever it takes to win custody of the Watson boys. But, marry a mortal enemy of the Evans family? Only God can give her the courage and heart to go through with it.

As I said, I’ve read the book, but please give us the first page for my readers.
1890
Paris, Tennessee
“Fire!”

The single word had the power to force a body to drop to his knees and call out to his Maker for leniency. But most took time for neither, instead racing to the scene of terror with the bucket they kept stored close to the door, and joining the contingent of citizens determined to battle the flames of death and destruction. Such was the case tonight when, washing the dinner dishes in the kitchen sink, Mercy Evans heard the dreaded screams coming from all directions, even began to smell the sickening fumes of blazing timber seeping through her open windows. She ran through her house and burst through the screen door onto the front porch.

“Where’s the fire?” she shouted at the people running up Wood Street carrying buckets of water.

Without so much as a glance at her, one man hollered on the run, “Looks to be the Watson place over on Caldwell.”

Her heart thudded to a shattering halt. God, no! “Surely, you don’t mean Herb and Millie Watson!”

Mercy Evans and Millie Watson, formerly Gifford, had been fast friends at school and had stuck together like glue in the dimmest of circumstances, as well as the sweetest. Millie had walked with Mercy through the loss of both her parents, and Mercy had watched Millie fall wildly in love with Herb Watson in the twelfth grade. She’d been the maid of honor in their wedding the following summer.

But her voice was lost to the footsteps thundering past. Whirling on her heel, she ran back inside, hurried to extinguish all but one kerosene lamp, snatched her wrap from its hook by the door, and darted back outside and up the rutted street toward her best friends’ home, dodging horses and a stampede of citizens. “Lord, please don’t let it be,” she pleaded aloud. “Oh, God, keep them safe. Jesus, Jesus….” But her cries vanished in the scramble of bodies crowding her off the street as several made the turn onto Caldwell in their quest to reach the flaming house, which already looked beyond saving.

SOFIA'S SECRET - Sharlene MacLaren - One Free Book

Welcome, Sharlene. I love your new picture. How did this book come about?
It is the third in a series, so while writing the first two, my mind had already spun the tale for the final book. That’s how a writer’s mind works I guess.

Tell us about the book’s cover and what makes it unique.
I love the cover, especially the bike parked outside the little house, as this is my main character’s primary source of transportation – even though she’s 7 months pregnant at the story’s onset. I have loved every cover the very talented graphics department from Whitaker House has designed, so I feel especially blessed.

I know what you mean. Charisma Media does such good covers for me, too. Please explain and differentiate between what’s fact and fiction in the book.
This story takes place in 1930, just a year after the stock market crash, so The Great Depression has set in, and many in the story have fallen on hard times, my main character in particular. Her tale, of course, is fictional.

How much research did you have to do for this book?
There is always a good amount of research going into most every book I write, and this one was no exception. The difference was that since it is the third in my series, I had already done a lot of the “homework” ahead of time. It was more a matter of crafting the story.

What are some of the most interesting things you found about this subject that you weren’t able to use in the story?
The basis of this story is about a young girl who is raped while under the influence of a sleeping drug. (She later becomes pregnant and, thus, shunned by many of the townsfolk for her unmarried state.) With my wonderful editor’s help, we discovered a number of drugs that were used in the 1930s to aid people (primarily women) in getting a good night’s sleep. These drugs were easily accessible then but would be considered barbiturates, not to mention illegal without a prescription, in this day. In the story, her attacker confiscates a specific drug from his mother’s “stash” when she is absent from the home, and mixes it with a drink to put his victim to sleep before attacking her.

What inspired and surprised you while you were writing the book?
Grace! I was surprised by GRACE – specifically God’s! I was quite ill throughout the writing of most of this book, in and out of the hospital for numerous tests and three different rounds of fluid replacement; thus, I was weak and depleted. God carried me through and literally “wrote” this book for me while I sat at my computer in somewhat of a dazed state! My lovely, wonderfully talented editor also aided GREATLY in bringing it to its final stages so it could go to press. Thank goodness for her amazing abilities to spot the minutest details that I am prone to overlook. Phew!

What do you hope the reader takes away from the story?
As always, my heartfelt desire is that my readers will come away from my books with a longing to seek out more of God. I want them to seek Him first above all else. My heart rejoices when I hear from readers who report that something I wrote challenged them in their faith or convicted them in a particular area of their life, maybe even caused them to go back to church or work on a broken relationship. That is why I write – so that God might see fit to use me as an avenue for pointing people to Him.

What is the next project you’re working on?
Currently, I’m working on a series titled Tennessee Dreams. It’s set in the late 1800s in the small (actual) town of Paris, Tennessee. I’m already well into the writing of the first book and having a blast getting acquainted with everybody in the town. As a seat-of-the-pants writer, I often don’t know myself what’s going to happen from page-to-page, so I’m feeling like the reader here as more and more people wander into my story uninvited! (smiles)

What do you do when you have to get away from the story for a while?
Gracious, that’s an easy question! I run to Facebook! Doesn’t everybody? (Seriously, I tell my friends at Facebook that they are my “teacher’s lounge”.) As a former teacher, I went to the lounge during recess breaks just to kick back for a few minutes and talk and laugh with my colleagues. However, there is much to do besides going to Facebook. When I need to get away from the business of writing I often catch up on laundry, visit my grandkids, make a grocery run, answer emails, take a brisk walk with my dog, or watch a little TV. Of course, I start my day with scripture and quiet time, but after that, it’s anybody’s guess what kind of interruptions I’ll encounter on any given day. By the way, I usually welcome interruptions! It’s that undiagnosed A.D.D.!

Please give us the first page of the book.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
—Psalm 51:17
June 1930
Wabash, Indiana
The blazing sun ducked behind a cloud, granting a smidgeon of relief to Sofia Rogers as she compressed the pedal to stop her bike in front of Murphy’s Market and, in a most inelegant manner, slid off the seat, taking care not to catch the hem of her loose-fitting dress in the bicycle chain. She scanned the street in both directions, hoping not to run into anyone she knew, then parked the rusting yellow bike next to a Ford truck. These days, she dreaded coming into town, but she couldn’t very well put off the chore much longer if she wanted to keep food on the table.

Her younger brother, Andy, had won the race to their destination. His equally corroded bike leaned against the building, and he stood next to it, his arms crossed, a burlap sack slung across one shoulder. As she approached, a smug grin etched his freckled face. “Didn’t I t-tell you I’d b-beat you?”

“That’s because you had a full minute head start on me, you rascal.” Sofie might have added that her present condition did not permit the speed and agility she’d once had, but she wasn’t about to make that excuse. “Just you wait. I’ll win on the way back home.”

“N-not if I can help it.”

She pressed the back of her hand to her hot, damp face and stepped up to the sidewalk. “We’ll see about that, Mr. Know-It-All.”

ELLIE'S HAVEN - Sharlene MacLaren - Free Book

Welcome, Sharlene, I love your new head shot. As an author, I know it takes a lot of people to birth each book. Who were the people involved in the birthing of this book, and what were their contributions?
First, I pray about each of my stories, asking God for divine direction and leadership as I decide on plots and characters. Countless times a week I call on Him for inspiration, and there is no doubt in my mind I wouldn’t be able to do this job without His strength and help. Secondly, my husband is my number one supporter. When I near deadlines he supplies me with plenty of hot tea and coffee and does whatever he can around the house to lighten my load. As for actual research, I called upon the lovely people of Wabash, Indiana to lend a hand in this current series, and they certainly did come through for me. I met with the museum archivist, a couple of town historians, the librarian, and several other citizens steeped in historical facts.

If you teach or speak. What’s coming up on your calendar?
I love speaking at women’s retreats, local writers’ conferences, women’s book clubs, and libraries. I have done several of these types of events in recent weeks and months but am currently taking a hiatus so I can finish my book of which the deadline date is just around the corner.

If you had to completely start over in another place, where would you move, and why?
Well, I can’t imagine moving anywhere that would put me out of close driving range from my kids and grandJOYs, so you’ve just asked me a very tough question, Lena! Okay, okay, if I have to go somewhere I’d choose Hawaii. And then I’d tell my children to follow us there! I hear the climate there is near perfect year ‘round. Yes, I’ve heard the cost of living is also excessive, so my family might have to settle for communal living, but that’d be okay by me as long as I had those four grands at my side.

If you could only tell aspiring novelists one thing, what would it be?
The main thing you want to do is START. It took me six years of constant writing before I finally signed my first contract, so it's certainly nothing that happens overnight. It's a lot of hard work, I'm afraid. I had to do a TON of homework; i.e. searching the web for publishing houses, attending writing conferences and conventions, networking with other writers in my genre, looking for local authors with whom I could meet and chat and bounce around ideas, reading, researching, submitting query letters to various houses and/or agents to see if I could pique their interest in my projects, and then, of course, PRAYING, PRAYING, PRAYING!!! It's a huge endeavor but worth every second. If writing is your passion and your God-given gift, the Lord will pave your way. Your job as a writer is to follow His leading.

You’ve been asked to be in charge of a celebrity cruise. Who would you ask to take part, and why? (AS in what program, singers, etc. [it doesn’t have to be writing related])

I’m a huge Beth Moore fan, so a Beth Moore cruise would be PERFECT! She is such a gifted, anointed speaker, and I’ve gained so much from her Bible studies. Of course, I’d request to share a table with her at all the evening meals. I can tell besides being a Bible scholar, she also enjoys having a good time. I think with our nutty personalities we’d really strike up a great friendship.

She will be a speaker at my church’s women’s conference in April. I’m really looking forward to that. Tell us about the featured book.
Ellie’s Haven is book two in my River of Hope Series. Here is the blurb from the back of the book:

A courageous young woman seeking refuge...

Ellie Booth was never the type to run away. But she'd witnessed her stepfather commit a heartless crime, and, knowing he'll stop at nothing to keep her quiet, she has no choice but to flee. Soon, she finds herself in Wabash, Indiana, scrambling for a cover identity to evade her stepfather. For lack of a better option, she answers an ad for a wife/housekeeper/nanny, praying that her lack of experience won't be obvious.

A widowed father with no domestic skills to speak of...

Gage Cooper is reaching the end of his rope. With four children between the ages of three and ten, he needs a reliable nanny, yet each one he's hired has thrown up her hands and deserted her post. When an attractive, spirited young woman applies for the "job," he knows he should pray about the matter, but his desperation for help propels him headlong into a marriage of convenience.
A trial by fire of their wedding vows...

Ellie immediately falls in love with the Cooper children, and, not long after, with their father. Soon, the "marriage of convenience" becomes less of a business arrangement as husband and wife yield to an attraction neither one had expected. When secrets of the past and dangers of the present arise in their lives, their marriage is put to the test, and God alone knows what will become of their union.

I love marriage-of-convenience stories. Please give us the first page of the book.

CHAPTER ONE
“For thou art not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, neither shall evil dwell with thee. The foolish shall not stand in thy sight...” ~ Psalm 5: 4, 5a

February 1928
Athens, Tennessee

Nothing wakes a body faster than a barking dog competing against the heated shouts of furious men. Eleanor Booth threw off her heavy quilt and leaped out of bed, pulling her flannel collar up tight to her throat and racing across the gritty floor to the window. With her fingertips, she scratched a circle of frost off the pane and peered through it into the cold, dark morning, squinting to make out the shadowy figures facing off just feet away from the rotting front porch. An icy chill paraded up her back.

“I ain’t payin’ you one cent more, Sullivan. You done took me f’r every last penny.”

“That’s where you’re wrong, Byron. Your pocket ain’t empty till I say it is, and as long as you produce hooch, the greenbacks will keep rolling in. You stop payin’ and I’ll shut you down quicker than a lizard on hot sand.”

They were at it again, Byron Pruitt, Ellie’s worthless stepfather, and Walter Sullivan, that crooked government agent. Byron’s dog, Curly, didn’t let up his fierce, frenzied barking, which ought to have deterred the dispute but instead fueled it.

“Byron, pay the man so he’ll get off ar’ property,” Ellie’s mother, Rita, said in a fidgety, pleading tone.

“Shut up, woman, and get back inside! I ain’t payin’ him another dime!”

Ellie snatched up her frayed robe from the foot of her bed, slipped into it, and rushed out of the room, toes gone numb from the arctic air wafting up through the floorboards. Tennessee winters didn’t generate much snow, but that didn’t stop the temperatures from plummeting into the single digits of a February morn.

Entering the tiny, dark living room, she found her mother, shoulders hunched in the open doorway and hands clutching the door frame, gray-brown hair mussed in every which direction, tattered, flannel nightgown hugging her narrow sides. A hasty glance at the potbelly stove in the middle of the room revealed nothing but a few glowing embers through the charred glass. More shivers stampeded up Ellie’s spine. “What’s going on?” she asked, coming up beside her mother.

LIVVIE'S SONG - Sharlene MacLaren - Free Book

I just love featuring this author and friend on my blog. Welcome, Shar. Since you’re being published regularly, what new avenues will your future books take?
Since I am what you’d call a “seat-of-the-pants” writer, is it all right for me to answer with, ‘I have no idea!’?  Sorry for starting on a facetious note, but I seem to live my life in a constant state of anticipation, a “What’s next, God?” mode.  As for story ideas, they are forever swirling around in my head, begging to be set free on the computer screen.  Will I ever run out of them?  No time soon as far as I can tell.

What conferences will you be attending this year? Will you be a speaker at any of them? I will be attending the ACFW conference in St. Louis in September.
Presently, I am not scheduled to speak at any writers’ events, but I am speaking at some upcoming community events as well as a women’s retreat.

If you were in charge of planning the panel discussion at a writing conference, what topic would the panel cover, and who would you ask to be on the panel, and why?
I think I’d love a discussion on “How to Breathe Life Into Your Characters.”  My panel would consist of writers who I believe do an excellent job at writing stories with characters that engage.  Here’s my list: Julie Lessman, Loree Lough, Kim Vogel Sawyer, Tracie Peterson, and, hmm, I’d love to invite Lena Nelson Dooley! There are countless others, but these are the names that first jumped out at me.

That would be a fun and interesting panel. Thanks for including me. How important is it to you to be active in writing organizations?
I think it’s essential to every author to stay active in organizations.  It is one way to stay current with writing trends.  We all reach that point of needing a battery charge, too, and retreats and conferences provide a wonderful opportunity for growth.

Where in the community or your church do you volunteer?
As a vocalist, I’ve always been passionate about music, so I stay active in choir and worship teams.  I love the privilege of leading people into a spirit of worship.  Such an honor!  My husband and I are also involved in small group Bible studies, and, of course, whenever I get the chance I love speaking at libraries and other community organizations about my writing journey.

Who are the five people who have made the most impact on your life, and how?
I don’t know if I can narrow it to five (grins), but I’ll try.  First, Mom and Dad were such stable forces in my life, very in love with each other and the Lord and encouraging me from a very young age to give my heart to Jesus and then to love His Word. They taught me so much by mere example.  Second, my wonderful, loving, understanding, and Godly husband, Cecil.  Over the course of our 36 years together, I have fallen more in love than I ever thought possible! Third, my darling daughters for unwittingly “teaching” me the meaning of depthless love.  Fourth, countless Sunday school teachers, pastors, and college professors.  (Oh, my goodness, I’ve broken the rule and gone way over five!  I think I’ll just stop there.)

If you could write the inscription on your tombstone, what would it be?
“She lived her life with abundant joy in the Lord!”

Tell us about the featured book.
Here is the back cover blurb for Livvie’s Song: Life is far from a breeze for Olivia Beckman, owner of Livvie's Kitchen, a favorite of locals in Wabash, Indiana. The widowed mother of two is struggling to make ends meet–no simple feat, especially when her cook turns in his resignation. Yet, she's determined to pull through on her own, just as she did when God failed to save her beloved Frank. Newly released from a ten–year prison sentence, Will Taylor is ready for a fresh start. With harmonica in hand–the only possession he values, aside from his Bible–he makes his way to Wabash, where a late–night meal at Livvie's Kitchen turns into a job opportunity when the outgoing cook learns about his restaurant experience. What he doesn't know is that the "restaurant" was a prison cafeteria. But Will became a new man behind bars, thanks to a Christian friend, and he credits God's providence with landing him a job he loves. Soon, he cooks and bakes his way into the stomachs of his customers–and the heart of his employer. Both are hesitant, though, still healing from past hurts. A recipe for love between them will require sharing secrets, braving dangers, and believing God for a bright future.

Here you go:

Smoke rings rose and circled the heads of Charley Arnold and Roy Scott as they sat in Livvie’s Kitchen, each partaking of steaming coffee, roast beef and gravy, and conversation, every so often guffawing at one or the other’s blather, neither caring much who heard them since the place buzzed with midday talk.  Folks liked coming to Livvie’s Kitchen to fill their stomachs, but getting their ears full could be just as satisfying.  Behind the counter, utensils banged against metal, and pots and pans sizzled and boiled with steam and smoke.  Joe Stewart, the cook, hollered, “Order’s up!” to which Olivia Beckman, the restaurant’s 31-year-old proprietress, slapped down two hamburger platters in front of Mr. and Mrs. Waters and delivered a hasty smile.  With a twist of her body, her knee-length, cotton floral skirt flared.  She mopped her brow and blew several strawberry blond strands of damp hair off her face then hustled to the counter.  “You boys put out those disgusting nicotine sticks,” she scolded on the run.  “How many times do I have to tell you I don’t allow smoking in my establishment?  I don’t even have ashtrays.”
“Aw, Livvie, how you expect us to enjoy a proper cup of coffee without a cigarette? ‘Sides, ar’ saucers work fine for ashtrays,” Charlie whined to her back.

“Saucers are not ashtrays,” said old Mrs. Garner who sat in the booth behind the men, craning her long, skinny neck to train her owl eyes on them, her lips pinched in a tight frown.  Mr. Garner had nothing to say, of course.  He rarely did, just let her do the talking, as usual, and sipped wordlessly on his tomato soup.

Livvie snatched the order form from the counter and gave it a glance, lifted two more plates, one with macaroni and cheese and a roll and the other a chicken drumstick with mashed potatoes, then whirled back around, eyeing both men with firmness.  “I expect you to follow my rules, boys”—she traipsed past them—“or go find yourselves another eatery where the smoke’s as thick as cow dung.”

TENDER VOW Sharlene MacLaren - Free Book

Welcome back, Sharlene. I love the peek at the space where you write. As an author, I know it takes a lot of people to birth each book. Who were the people involved in the birthing of this book, and what were their contributions?

Tender Vow is a contemporary romance birthed purely from my imagination. It didn’t require a lot of personal research, as the story’s setting is Northern Michigan, my home state. Writing historical stories is a whole different matter. For instance, the historical series I’m currently working on for a 2011 release has a Wabash, Indiana, setting, so I had to travel there to meet with city officials, historians, librarians, and the museum curator.

If you teach or speak. What’s coming up on your calendar?

I have some book-signings and short talks coming up in Grand Rapids in October and November and a tentative date set for a women’s Christmas tea at which I am to serve as keynote speaker. Aside from that, I’m booked for a 2-day women’s retreat in the fall of 2011. Of course, I’m looking forward to the 2010 ACFW annual convention in Indianapolis in September.

And I'm looking forward to spending time with you in Indianapolis. If you had to completely start over in another place, where would you move, and why?

The only town I would ever want to move to would be Grand Haven, the setting for my Daughters of Jacob Kane Series. Currently, I live in Spring Lake, a small town separated only by a bridge from Grand Haven. I know, not very adventurous, but here’s the thing. Family, church, and friends are everything to Cecil and me. We cannot imagine leaving West Michigan. In other words, God would have to move a mountain to convince us He wanted us to leave. We’ll go if He calls us, yes, but we better be really, really sure of His call.

I totally understand that. If you could only tell aspiring novelists one thing, what would it be?

Never allow those rejection letters to discourage you to the point of quitting. Okay, you can quit for a day or so, but then jump right back into it. If you have a strong urge to write, and you believe in your heart God gave you a passion for it, then chances are good you’ll publish someday. The trick is to keep plugging away. Honing your skill takes hours of hard work and study, not to mention attending conferences, reading in your genre, joining critique groups, and learning the industry. Pray, pray, pray. If God wants you published, it will happen, but bear in mind, it’s all about Him and His perfect timing.

You’ve been asked to be in charge of a celebrity cruise. Who would you ask to take part, and why? (AS in what program, singers, etc. [it doesn’t have to be writing related]

Wow, a free cruise? This is my kinda vacay. Oh wait, I’m in charge of the entertainment? Well, since it’s my cruise, then I think I’d go with a Christian environment. Why not? For starters, I gotta have the hilarious Mark Lowry (and I also want him sitting at my dinner table every night), and since we’re talking about Mark Lowry, I’d just as soon have the Gaither Vocal Band perform on stage every night. Wouldn’t mind a little bit of Buddy Greene on the harmonica either. Okay, I’m good with that. Who wants to jump on board with me? It’s a 7-night cruise by the way, probably the Bahamas, and of course, the sun will shine everyday, and the waters will be crystal clear. You did say this is my cruise, right, Lena?

Of course, it's your cruise. Where can I sign up? With that lineup of some of my favorite people, it'll be a sell-out. Tell us about the featured book, Tender Vow.

Here is a brief synopsis of the book: Michigan-born brothers John and Jason Evans take a ski trip to the Colorado Rockies, but only one comes home alive—John is tragically killed on a daring descent down Devil's Ridge, an infamously dangerous slope.

In an attempt to soothe his guilt and grief, Jason sets out to make amends with his widowed sister-in-law, Rachel, by offering to help with her two small children, doing odd jobs around her house, and trying to ease her own heavy burden of grief. A new Christian, he is bent on growing his faith and helping Rachel see her way through the fog of pain and confusion.

Left to raise her three-year-old daughter and newborn son on her own, Rachel Evans is anything but willing to become her brother-in-law's charity case, particularly since they have a history she'd rather forget. She's determined to make it on her own but soon finds that God has other plans for her--and for Jason.

Can she accept the Lord's leading and still honor her late husband's memory?

Oooo, I like it already. Please give us the first page of the book.

September’s azure skies were his canopy as Jason Evans whizzed north on US-31 on his way to his parents’ house. Unfortunately for the cluster of cows he spotted standing off in the middle of what should have been a grassy field, days of smoldering heat and a lack of rain had turned the rolling hillsides as brown as straw. He adjusted the radio dial from mellow rock to talk, then moved the AC knob up a notch. For some reason, he tilted the rearview mirror down to check his appearance. He wasn’t a vain man, but even he wasn’t blind to the new wrinkle in his forehead. Probably due to his years of squinting at the sun on the slopes. Candace said it lent to his ruggedly handsome appearance. Right.

Tuesday would be his thirtieth birthday, one reason he’d agreed to join his folks for Sunday dinner. He wasn’t in the celebrating mood, but he’d decided to come for his mom’s sake. She always had been big on birthdays, even going so far as to buy Rosie, the family mutt—some kind of terrier/poodle/spaniel mix—a bone when her special day came around.

Jason felt his cell phone vibrate in his pocket. Keeping his eyes on the road, he pulled it out, then glanced down at the number. “Hi, Candace,” he said, looking back at the road.

“Hey! How’s your drive going? Are you almost there?”

“A few more miles. What’s up?”

“Does something have to be up for me to want to talk to the man I love?”

He gave an absent smile and silently berated himself for his lack of tact. “Are you on break?”

“Why do you answer all of my questions with questions?”

ABBIE ANN - Sharlene MacLaren - Free Book

As an author, I know it takes a lot of people to birth each book. Who were the people involved in the birthing of this book, and what were their contributions?

Well, with every one of my books I would have to say my beloved husband plays a huge part in my books coming to fruition. Without his loving support, I wouldn’t be able to spend so much time at my computer. My daughters are also key supporters. Sometimes when it gets down to crunch time they even bring meals. It’s so nice to “feel the love” when I working!

If you teach or speak. What’s coming up on your calendar?

I give a number of library talks in which I share my writing journey, a bit of the writing process, and give a few pointers on how to set and reach publishing goals. I have a couple of TV and radio tapings coming up but sadly don’t have airdates yet.

If you had to completely start over in another place, where would you move, and why?

Well, I was born and raised in West Michigan. Yes, cold winters, but summers, glorious. Think sand dunes, spectacular Lake Michigan beaches, gorgeous sunsets, swimming and boating—and GRANDCHILDREN!!!! IF I were ever to relocate, it would have to be to a neighboring city or state. My kids and grands all live within minutes of hubby and me. Now, I ask…how could we possibly leave when we have everything we could ever want or need right here in our little corner of the world? (Sorry, not the answer you were looking for, but, oh well. Grins…)

There is not right or wrong answer.

You’ve been asked to be in charge of a celebrity cruise. Who would you ask to take part, and why? (AS in what program, singers, etc. [it doesn’t have to be writing related])

Okay, this will probably sound corny to most, but I’ve never gone on a “Christian” cruise, so that would be my choice. I’d invite the Gaither Vocal Band to head up the music and I’d ask Mark Lowry (hilarious guy) to emcee the entire event from beginning to end.

You'd have to ask James and me to go. We love the Gaither Vocal Band and Mark Lowry. Tell us about the featured book?

Abbie Ann is the third and final book in my current series, The Daughters of Jacob Kane. Here’s a very brief synopsis: Abbie Ann Kane, the youngest of Jacob Kane's three daughters, is a busy woman. Between running the Whatnot, the family's general store, being active in the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and assisting the elderly citizens of Sandy Shores, Michigan, she has little time for frivolous matters. And those include matters of the heart. When the recently divorced Noah Carson comes to town with son Toby in tow to pursue a shipbuilding business, Abbie Ann tries to keep her distance—but God has other plans in mind.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Sandy Shores, Michigan
February 1907

Abbie Ann Kane marched through blinding snow on her way to Kane’s Whatnot, howling winds curling their icy fingers around the buildings of downtown Sandy Shores, hissing and spitting and stinging her nose and cheeks. She pulled her woolen scarf tighter about her neck, but the bitter air still managed to find a hole through which to pass, making her shiver with each hurried step.

The Interurban railcar rumbled past, its whistle alerting pedestrians and horses to make way for its journey up Water Street, Sandy Shores’ main thoroughfare. Through its frosty windows Abbie made out a scant number of passengers, even caught a glimpse of someone drawing letters on a foggy pane, probably some bored youngster, she mused.

Turning her gaze downward, she headed into the strong, easterly gusts, passing Joe’s Barbershop, Tim’s Shoe and Boot Store, Mildred’s Tailoring Shop, and then Ed’s Meat Market. Two more doors and she would reach her destination, the Kane family general store. Normally, her sister Hannah would be working today, but Abbie had taken primary responsibility for Kane’s Whatnot since the birth of little Rose-Ann Devlin on January 15. The little girl was Hannah and Gabe’s third child, and Hannah had her hands full also caring for 18-month-old Alex and their 11-year-old adopted son, Jesse. Taking responsibility for Kane’s Whatnot was the least Abbie could do, never mind that she barely had time to turn around what with her Sunday school teaching job, her recent appointment as president of the local Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, assisting Grandmother Kane with the household chores, and visiting the elderly Plooster sisters as often as possible. Poor things depended on her to keep them abreast of all the town’s news.

The bell above the door tinkled as she pulled open the wooden door, a cold blast of air scooting past her ankles. Her father looked up from his place behind the brass National cash register. “Ah, you’re back from lunch, and not a second too soon. I have an appointment with a client at one o’clock. Can you take over from here?”

“Of course, Papa. Just let me hang up my wrap.” Besides owning Kane’s Whatnot, her middle-aged father with the graying hair and matching beard also partnered with Leo Perkins in the insurance business, the Kane and Perkins office building situated directly across the road from the Whatnot. Both businesses thrived in this lively little resort town situated on the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan where the winters could be bitter but the summers delightfully warm and cheery.

The line at the cash register wound around the center aisle. There was Maxine Card and her young daughter Lily, their arms full with candles, two loaves of bread, a wooden bowl, and a mixing beater, Landon and Florence Meir each toting grocery items, and Fred and Dorothy Link, Fred hefting a sack of flour over his shoulder and Dorothy holding some canned goods and a few miscellaneous items. Abbie moved past her father to hang her winter gear on a hook in the small closet behind the counter, which also served as a washroom. After doing so, she glanced in a tiny mirror to rearrange the side combs in her flowing black hair, rubbed her icy fingers together, and joined her father on the other side of the curtain, the potbellied stove at the back of the store not giving off near enough heat to quell today’s sub-zero temperatures.

I've loved both of the other books in this series. I know I'll love Abbie Ann just as much. Where can we find you on the Internet?

MAGGIE ROSE - Sharlene MacLaren - Free Book

I'm really excited to have my good friend Sharlene MacLaren back on the blog. Welcome, Sharlene. Why did you become an author?

Interesting you should ask. I just posted a response about that on the ACFW loop a few minutes ago. I write because back in the summer of 2000, God literally placed a call on my heart to write. I was 52 years old and hadn’t written a word of fiction since my high school days. About the only way I can explain it is that a flame of passion started burning and refused to let up. During the course of that year, I wrote four full-length novels. Think I could do that today? Not on your life. ‘Course, I’m not saying those novels were worth their weight in computer paper, but they sure revved up my engine!

And I'm glad they did. If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?

Hmm, my dream job is what I’m doing this very moment, sitting at my computer writing, but because I have to come up with something (so I don’t have the wrath of Lena on me), let me just tell you what my dream job would be. A taste tester at a chocolate factory. Now, there’s a job I could live with!

Maybe we could be partners on that one. If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?

My all-time favorite time-period is the late 1800s/early 1900s. I think I love that era because my own grandfather was born in 1881, so it feels somewhat relatable to me. I loved the long dresses, the start of the Gibson Girl era, the horse and buggies, the general stores, the dusty streets, the simplistic lifestyles, and on and on. It sounds “romantic”…BUT reality sets in when I think about it, and something tells me I wouldn’t have been the most patient or proficient homemaker back then. Shoot, my family might not have survived under my care. (I just can’t see myself ringing a chicken’s neck or carting in buckets of water from the outside well.) Good thing God knew that and placed me in the twentieth century.

The only time I ever wrung a chicken's neck was when I was pregnant with my first baby. Once was enough for me. What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?

Back in the mid-70s, I traveled with a vocal group all over the country for a year, singing in some 40 states and parts of Canada. So, I truly have been all over the USA. But we missed the Dakotas, and I’ve always wanted to visit Mt. Rushmore for one and see the Black Hills. I hear it’s a beautiful area. (Oh, wait a minute! How could I forget? I WANT TO GO TO HAWAII IN THIS LIFETIME! Would someone put a bug in my hubby’s ear?)

How about a foreign country you hope to visit?

Both Cecil (hubby) and I would love to visit the Holy Land. Oh, how I’d love to walk where Jesus walked.

What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?

Something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately is that rather age-old statement: ‘God has a wonderful plan for your life.’ At 60, I can now be one of those who look back over her life and do a lot of reflecting. I’ve discovered that God does not have a wonderful “plan” for my life; He has MANY wonderful plans. Every day is a new day, and so I rise in the morning and say, “What are we going to do today, Lord?” He always seems to have something new up His sleeve.

Tell us about the featured book?

Maggie Rose is the second of three in my Daughters of Jacob Kane series. Here’s a very condensed version of the synopsis:

In the summer of 1904, Maggie Rose Kane, Jacob's spunky, independent middle daughter accepts God's call to leave her beloved hometown of Sandy Shores, Michigan, to work as 'house mother' at New York City's Sheltering Arms Refuge, a home for displaced and orphaned waifs. There she meets the cynical, hard-nosed Luke Madison, a 27-year-old news reporter from the New York World who's been thrust upon the orphanage for a three-month period with an order to research the city's problem of "Street Arabs," the name pinned to these impoverished children.

Sparks fly as Maggie and Luke come to terms with their growing attraction. Will Maggie win the struggle to remain attuned to God's direction for her life, staving off her foolish, romantic notions-or does the Lord have a greater purpose than she ever imagined for leading her to New York?

Please give us the first page of the book.

Here it is, page 1:

August 1904
Maggie Rose Kane settled her temple against the smudged window, blinked hard, and fought back another wave of nausea, as the smoke from her seatmate’s cigar formed cloudlike ringlets before her eyes and floated past her nose. Why, her lungs fairly burned from the stench of it, as if she’d been the one chain-smoking the stogies for the past five hours instead of the bulbous, gray-haired giant next to her. Even as he’d dozed this afternoon, his shoulders slumped and sagging against her petite frame, the vile object had hung out the side of his mouth as if permanently attached. She couldn’t even count the number of times she’d wanted to snatch it from him and snuff it out with the sole of her black patent leather shoe.

“Next stop, Albany,” announced the train conductor, making his way up the aisle.

With a quick intake of air, Maggie lifted a finger and leaned forward. “Excuse me, sir.”

The conductor stopped, turned, and tipped his hat at her in a formal manner. “Yes?”

“Is this where I will disembark and make a change-over to the New York Central?”

He tilted his head to the side and slanted one reddish eyebrow. The slightest bit of annoyance seemed to pull at him as he released a mild sigh. “If that’s what your ticket says. You’re goin’ to New York, aren’t you?”

I can hardly wait until my copy arrives. How can readers find you on the Internet?
