IRISH MEADOWS - Susan Anne Mason - One Free Book

Welcome back, Susan. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
For the next while, I will be working on Books 2 and 3 in the Courage to Dream series (the books that follow Irish Meadows). A Worthy Heart releases in the spring of 2016 and Book 3 (working title Love’s Healing Grace) should come out late 2016.

Tell us a little about your family.
My husband and I just celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary in May, and we took a trip to New York City, which was great! We have two children—a daughter in university who still lives at home, and a son who just graduated from high school.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
I think I actually read more now if that’s possible. But I also read with a more critical eye—picking up hints as to how the really great authors hone their craft!

What are you working on right now?
I’m in the beginning chapters of Love’s Healing Grace which centers on the two youngest O’Leary children, Deirdre and Connor, and their happily-ever-afters. I am setting part of this book in Canada (per requests from my fellow Canadians) so I plan to do some “hands-on” research in Toronto this summer.

What outside interests do you have?
For a while I was obsessed with researching our family roots on the Ancestry.com websites. That was SO much fun, especially when I was able to solve a few family mysteries! I also enjoy scrapbooking, but don’t have a lot of time for it right now.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I’m not really sure! I try to pick areas in the states that are similar to my home province of Ontario. New York is very similar to us with regards to the landscape and the weather. That’s one of the reasons I picked Long Island, NY. The other is just research—what area fits with the story I want to tell.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
This is a tough question! I would have to say Princess Diana, whom I admired so much for her bravery and her kindness. I would love to have had a chance to talk with her!

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
That is a tough question—especially trying to narrow it down to one thing! I think overall it would have been to join a writing group sooner. By accident I found Romance Writers of America online and later found that we had a chapter here in Toronto (a 40 minute drive away). I learned a great deal from attending these meetings and meeting other authors. But joining the American Christian Fiction Writers was when I truly felt I’d found my home. Wish I had done it years earlier!

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
Maybe that I have bit off more than I can chew. Promoting one book, while editing another and creating a third is a lot more challenging than I had imagined. But I will get through it!

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
I’m not sure I’m qualified to answer this! LOL! I would say try to get your name out there by participating in blogs, Facebook and other social media. And be generous with your readers!

Tell us about the featured book.
Irish Meadows
is set in 1911 in Long Island, New York. Patriarch James O’Leary, owner of a renowned horse breeding farm, has worked hard to overcome the stigma of being the son of a poor Irish immigrant. He plans for his daughters to marry into wealthy families, not only to aid Irish Meadows, but to secure their rightful place in society. Both girls, however, have different ideas for their futures. As the two O’Leary daughters search for their place in the world, they must learn to stand up for themselves and find the courage to follow their hearts.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Late afternoon shadows chased Gilbert Whelan up the long drive to the O’Leary mansion. The fanciful images seemed to bolster him from behind, giving him the courage to push forward. Even so, his steps slowed as he approached the flagstone path leading up to the house. A wave of homesickness tightened his throat, his suitcase weighing heavy in his hand.

Had it really been the better part of three years since he'd crossed the threshold? Gil swallowed the bitter taste of guilt that so often plagued him and continued to the foot of the wide, welcoming staircase. He set his battered bag on the ground and took in the familiar setting, the wraparound porch, the double front door. He’d come here as a child with his widowed mother who’d hired on as the O’Learys’ housekeeper. Gil still found it difficult to think of the tragic illness that had claimed his mother’s life and led to him being taken in as part of the family.

Belonging…yet not belonging.

Gil ran a hand over the white column on his left, his touch hesitant, nearly reverent. The red bricks of Irish Meadows had changed little since he'd been gone. If only the same could be said of its inhabitants.

Gil let his hand fall away with a sigh. If he’d had his way, he wouldn’t have come back at all—for a multitude of complicated reasons. But he owed the O’Learys too much to avoid them any longer. So, he’d stay long enough to repay his debt to his guardians, and then move on to start a life of his own.

Lord, I could really use your guidance here. Give me the strength to do what needs to be done without hurting anyone in the process.

Behind those ornate doors, Gil knew the family would be waiting to greet him, like a long lost son returning home. Reluctant to face the exuberant welcomes just yet, Gil turned down the stone path and made his way to the one place he felt most at home—the O’Leary stables. When he rounded the corner of the house and spied the enormous barn, a thrill of anticipation shot through him. How blessed he’d been to work on such a top-notch farm, raising and training the best racehorses on the eastern seaboard. At James O’Leary’s feet, Gil had learned everything he needed to branch out on his own one day.

But first things first…

As he entered the building, Gil breathed in the familiar scent of hay, horse and manure and let out a long breath. He’d missed working with the animals almost as much as he’d missed the O’Learys. Manhattan was an interesting city, but Gil far preferred the fresh air, wide skies and open meadows of Long Island. Especially in the spring when all of nature bloomed anew.

His gaze skimmed the immaculate mahogany stalls with their engraved brass nameplates for each thoroughbred. His ears tuned to the horses’ quiet nickering, a sound more beautiful than a symphony. As his eyes adjusted to the dim light, Gil made his way to the one stall he'd be able to find blindfolded. When he raised the latch, Midnight Royalty gave a loud whinny in greeting. In an instant, Gil had his arms around the great black neck, murmuring words of affection for his friend. The horse tossed his head, flicking his nose to send Gil’s cap sailing into the straw.
Gil laughed out loud. “I’ve missed you too, boy. But I’m home now.” For a while anyway. He stroked his hand along Midnight’s sleek flank. “Looks like they’ve been taking good care of you while I was gone. Your coat’s as shiny as I’ve ever seen it.”

“I brushed him every day for you.”

Gil’s hand froze on Midnight’s back, every vertebrae of his spine stiffening.

Brianna. The one person he’d been trying not to think about, trying not to imagine seeing again for the first time in almost three years. He swallowed hard, and then turned to find her standing in the open doorway of the stall.

WAYWARD HEARTS - Susan Anne Mason - One Free Book

Welcome back, Susan. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I’ve always loved anything to do with romance. Even as a child reading Nancy Drew mysteries, I was more interested in her getting together with Ned. So writing my own stories of romance came quite naturally. It wasn’t until I got introduced to Christian romance that I knew I wanted to incorporate a faith element into my stories.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
The birth of my first child was the happiest! My husband and I had a hard time conceiving, so when our daughter was born, it was like a dream come true!

How has being published changed your life?
Getting published was the fulfillment of a dream dear to my heart. Holding that first book in my hands was one of the most amazing feelings ever. It is also has made me feel like I belong with all my fellow authors. It’s like being part of the cool crowd! LOL.

What are you reading right now?
I’m reading Captured by Love by Jody Hedlund. An excellent read!

What is your current work in progress?
I am currently working on my second historical romance for Bethany House. Irish Meadows, the story of two O’Leary sisters, releases next August, and now I’m writing their brother’s story (currently untitled) which comes out in 2016.

What would be your dream vacation?
Anywhere by the ocean. I especially love New Jersey and Florida!

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I set my Rainbow Falls series in a fictional small town in North Dakota, mainly because it had some similarities to my home province of Ontario in Canada. For my Love Inspired book, Healing the Widower’s Heart, coming out in February, I chose the finger lakes region of New York because it resembled the Muskoka cottage country in Northern Ontario where the Wyndermere Resort was situated. For my historical series, I based it somewhat loosely on my own Irish ancestors who settled in Brooklyn, New York, but after some research, I chose Long Island as the place where the O’Learys’ horse farm, Irish Meadows, was situated. So, in answer to your question, I guess each case is different!

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
Tough one. Either Oprah Winfrey or Katie Couric because they are both women I admire who have accomplished so much and have met so many interesting people over the course of their careers. It would be a fascinating evening!

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
I don’t have much time for other hobbies, but I do enjoy scrapbooking. Back when my kids were young, I spent a lot of time making books of their baby pictures. I also love researching our family history and have solved some family mysteries with my online research through www.Ancestry.com .

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
Learning to plot a story from beginning to end was a major obstacle for me. The other was writing consistently. Many times I’d just stop writing for months at a time. I finally realized that to be a good writer, I had to keep at it! Practice does make perfect.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
I would advise a beginner to join a writer’s group if at all possible and study, study, study the craft of writing. The second thing I would advise is to enter writing contests. This is great for getting feedback on your work, and in my case, two of my contracts were a direct result of contests I entered. A good critique partner and/or mentor is also another great way to boost your confidence as a writer.

Wayward Hearts is the story of Maxi North, who always dreamed of being a famous hairstylist in New York City. She is living the life she loves, until the unexpected death of her father brings her back to her hometown of Rainbow Falls where she is forced to confront a tragedy from her past, as well as her unrequited feelings for Jason Hanley, her former best friend.

Please give us the first page of the book.
“Ninth floor penthouse.” The musical voice oozed from the speakers as the elevator slid to a smooth stop.

The doors whispered open, and Maxi North stepped out into the magnificent lobby of Baronne’s Salon. She paused, latte in hand, and smiled at the sheer luxury on display. The ornate crystal chandelier glittered above the mahogany reception desk that housed a striking array of orchids. Sometimes Maxi had to pinch herself to make sure she wasn’t dreaming—that this former farm girl from Rainbow Falls, North Dakota, now worked as a junior stylist in one of the top salons in New York City.

She hiked her purse farther onto the shoulder of her satin jacket as she strode into the heart and soul of the salon—the chrome and glass stylist stations, where the employees worked their magic for a pampered clientele. The familiar scents of floral shampoos, coconut conditioner, and hair spray swirled around her.

Coming in for the afternoon shift meant that most of the stations already bustled with activity. On the way to her own station, second chair from the back, she waved to her friend Cherise. With a contented sigh, Maxi set down her latte, threw her purse in the bottom drawer, and plugged in her curling irons.

“You’re early today.” Cherise stood on tiptoes, stretching to reach one of the sliding cupboards at Maxi’s right. She grabbed some towels and blew her pink-tinted corkscrews off her forehead before flashing a dazzling smile.

“Nothing to do at home. My Internet connection died, so I figured I might as well come in and get a head start on my shift.” Maxi fished her cell phone out of her jacket pocket and deposited it on the counter in front of the huge beveled mirror. “Mrs. Rothman’s my first customer. You know how picky she is.”

Cherise snickered. “Uh-huh. Better you than me.” She swung back toward her customer, then pivoted, her ebony eyes twinkling. “Rumors are flying today. Philippe and the other partners have been in a meeting all morning.”

The numerous cups of coffee Maxi had already consumed churned in her stomach. “Good news or bad, do you think?” She hadn’t dared heed the latest gossip that the Baronnes might be considering taking on another partner.

“Hard to tell.” Cherise nodded toward the hall leading to Philippe Baronne’s private office. “Guess we’ll know soon enough.”

BETRAYED HEARTS - Susan Anne Mason - One Free Book

Welcome, Susan. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
That’s a tough one. I don’t consciously write myself into my characters, but I’m sure some of my personality leaks through. One thing I do try to include, though, is the message of God’s love and forgiveness.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
I live a pretty boring life. I can’t think of anything quirky. Oh, I just remembered something. My grandmother passed away when she was 96 and 4 years later on her 100th birthday, I had an impromptu celebration at the cemetery, complete with helium balloons!

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
I started writing my first book with encouragement from my Grade 6 teacher, and finished it in my teens. I received my first rejection in high school and then stopped writing. University, marriage, and children took over for the next 20+ years! I rediscovered my love of writing again sometime after my 40th birthday, and it took about 10 years to finally get published. A winding road to be sure!

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
I enjoy romance of almost any kind: contemporary, historical, inspirational, and sweet.  I do read some secular romances as well, but my favorite authors are Julie Lessman, Becky Wade, Laura Frantz, Jody Hedlund, and Katie Ganshert.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
Writing is my sanity. If I haven’t had to time to write in a while, I find myself getting very grumpy. LOL.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
I usually pick first names I love and pair them with a last name that I think sounds good. Sometimes for inspiration I read the obituaries in the paper. A little morbid, but you get great story ideas there, too!

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Raising two great kids. And making it to almost 30 years of marriage. A huge accomplishment these days!

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
Definitely a cat. We have 2 in our house, and they lead the loveliest lives. Eating, sleeping and getting fussed over!

What is your favorite food?
I would have to say pizza—with chocolate coming in a close second.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
Learning to plot a story from beginning to end was a huge issue for me. I started as a seat-of-the-pantser but partway through the book, I’d have a hot mess on my hands. Now I’ve learned to plot the big events from beginning to end, along with the major twists and turns, and this helps me write more cohesively.

Tell us about the featured book.
Betrayed Hearts is the story of Lily Draper, a girl who has had a rough childhood and a rocky road to adulthood. At the beginning of the book, she has reached the lowest point in her life. The discovery that she may have a biological sister who her adoptive parents didn’t tell her about leads her to Rainbow Falls, North Dakota, to find her. The last thing Lily expects is to meet an aspiring minister who makes her question everything she believes about herself.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Prologue
The click of the door echoed as loud as a gunshot through the silent house. Lily Draper’s heart battled to escape her chest. She pressed her back against the cool wall of her father’s office and made a valiant effort to calm the roar of blood in her ears.

No time for fear. Focus on what you’re here for.

The familiar scent of cedar and moth balls threatened to swamp her with nostalgia, causing memories of her beloved mother to spring forth with a ferocity that spiked an ache of longing through her.

Mama, how I wish you hadn’t died. If you were here now, my life wouldn’t be such a disaster.
She pushed away from the wall, grim determination stiffening her resolve. She refused to dwell on thoughts of her mother, knowing how disappointed Mama would be with the drastic action Lily was about to take.

She felt her way in the dark to the desk where she snapped on the brass lamp. Dust motes danced under the short beam of light aimed at the open Bible. With a pang, Lily ran her fingers over the worn pages. She used to love when Mama read her stories from the Bible. But that was before God took her mother away and left her with Tobias. With each punishment Tobias doled out, he cited a judgmental, angry God who waited to punish Lily for the least transgression. Lily wanted no part of a God like that.
