SPROUTS OF LOVE - Valerie Comer - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, Valerie. As an author, I know it takes a lot of people to birth each book. Who were the people involved in the birthing of this book, and what were their contributions?
Sprouts of Love is part of Arcadia Valley Romance, a multi-author Christian contemporary romance series, so I definitely have to give a shout-out to Elizabeth Maddrey, Mary Jane Hathaway, Lee Tobin McClain, Danica Favorite, and Annalisa Daughety. We’ve been brainstorming for well over a year now as we planned out the over-arching series and then each author’s part within it.

We released Romance Grows in Arcadia Valley in January. It’s designed to be a permanent box set containing six novellas, each introducing one author’s three- book mini-series within the big series. From there, we’re releasing one book a month for eighteen months, rotating through the authors. Sprouts of Love is my first full-length novel to release in the AVR series.

Aside from my author group — and especially to Elizabeth Maddrey for daily encouragement and kicks in the backside as needed — I definitely need to give credit to my editor, who always brings out the best in my work.

If you had to completely start over in another place, where would you move, and why?
My husband will retire in about seven years, and we’re talking about this. Both of us love the ocean — Vancouver Island, in particular. The big question is whether we could handle living so far from our grandchildren! When we’re wandering along the Pacific shoreline, it’s easy to say, “What grandchildren? And besides, they’ll be teenagers by then and won’t care if we’re around. They’ll be busy with their own thing.”

And then we return home and feel small arms squishing our necks, and remember, “Oh, those grandchildren! How could we even think about moving away from them?”

Thankfully, we don’t have to make the decision any minute soon, and we can continue heading to the ocean for our ‘fix’ a couple of times a year in the meantime.

If you could only tell aspiring novelists one thing, what would it be?
Plan for success. Or, really, plan at all! Don’t only think about the genres you’re interested in and what success would look like for you. Write down your dreams and goals… and what you think you might need to do to make that happen. You can always change your written plan, but it’s important to have one so you can see where you want to go and how you’ll get there.

You’ve been asked to be in charge of a celebrity cruise. Who would you ask to take part, and why? (AS in what program, singers, etc. [it doesn’t have to be writing related])
Wow, you know how to ask tough questions! Interestingly enough, the only thing that comes to mind would be a conference on the local food movement from a Christian worldview, along with gardening, food preservation, and cooking classes (since that is a passion of mine that comes out in my stories). That sort of thing. I’d invite speakers like Joel Salatin, Wendell Berry, and Matthew Sleeth. The problem is that I’m talking about a group who would consider cruises so environmentally unfriendly the conference would never take place!

Tell us about the featured book.
Single mom Evelyn Felton takes on a third part-time job managing a greenhouse and garden project for Grace Fellowship. Formerly homeless, she’s thrilled to offer truckloads of fresh produce to the Arcadia Valley food bank.

If only Ben Kujak weren’t running Corinna’s Cupboard singlehandedly, he’d be delighted to be on the receiving end. But Evelyn and her dynamo daughter, Maisie, won’t take no for an answer, even if it means restructuring Ben’s charity.

Soon Ben finds himself wishing they’d transform his personal life, too, but can true love sprout when their pasts collide with the present?

Please give us the first page of the book.
“You’re Evelyn Felton?”

Whatever that was all about. The man blocking the entrance to Corinna’s Cupboard couldn’t be a minute over twenty-five, but that didn’t stop him from acting like he owned the place. Eyebrows raised, he appraised her from steely blue eyes.

What had she ever done to him? Nothing. She’d never seen him before… had she? Evelyn stiffened her back and kept the smile in place. “Yes, I’m Evelyn, and I’m here to meet with Ben Kujak about donating garden-grown produce. Is he in?”

Silence reigned for several heartbeats.

Had she asked such a difficult question? The building this charity operated just north of Arcadia Valley’s Main Street wasn’t that big. If Mr. Kujak wasn’t stocking shelves or applying for grants, he likely wasn’t on the premises.

The upstart chewed his lip then nodded, stepping aside. “With a name like Evelyn, I was expecting someone older.”

He had to be kidding. Her name wasn’t Matilda or Ethel. Evelyn tightened her grip on her messenger bag and raised her eyebrows. “I’m not sure what that’s supposed to mean. You haven’t answered my question. Is Mr. Kujak available? If not, when’s a good time to meet him?”

Muscles rippled the length of his arm as he stretched out his hand. “I’m Ben. Come on in.”

“I, um...” She blinked and shook his hand briskly. “Hi.” Nobody had told her the man who’d worked miracles starting a charity from nothing was little more than a kid. Scratch that. Definitely not a child, not with how attractive he looked in those cargo shorts and gray T-shirt. Not with his light brown hair matching the stubble that graced his cheeks and chin.

Evelyn shook her head and took a deep breath. “Like you, I thought I was meeting with someone older.”

ROMANCE GROWS IN ARCADIA VALLEY (SOW IN LOVE) - Valerie Comer - One Ebook Giveaway

Bio: Valerie Comer's life on a small farm in western Canada provides the seed for stories of contemporary inspirational romance. She only hopes her creations enjoy their happily-ever-afters as much as she does hers, shared with her husband, adult kids, and adorable granddaughters. Valerie is a USA Today bestselling author and a two-time Word Award winner.

Welcome back, Valerie. Why did you become an author?
Because the thought of writing out my hallucinations and getting paid to share them with the world was too great to resist! Seriously, though, there are so many stories floating around in my brain, and they need a way out. I’m thankful that God has given me this opportunity.

I know what you mean. If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?
I once thought I’d like to be an architect and design eco-friendly houses. I now design houses and turn (imaginary) people loose in them without spending a fortune on the college degree … and with no worries about the structures holding up under the snow load or gale-force winds.

If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?
Honestly? I’d take right now. I’m grateful to live in a time period where glasses and computers have been invented. Command-plus is my friend. Not that many years ago, someone with my vision problems would have been functionally blind. I have so much to be thankful for.

What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?
I’m a Canadian, so I’m not sure how to answer this question! Have you seen that meme going around Facebook where it asks Americans how many states they have visited and says the average is eight? Personally, I’ve visited 23 US states. I’d like to experience the New England states someday, as well as their Canadian neighbors, the Atlantic provinces.

At least, I’m above average with 17, and I’d love to visit Canada, too. How about a foreign country you hope to visit?
My husband and I are planning a month-long trip to the United Kingdom in 3-4 years. I believe those of us who live in western North America tend not to have a deep feeling of history, as everything happened quite recently in the grand scheme of things. I want to experience the depth of that history in England and Wales.

My ancestors came from Norway, Sweden, Ireland, and Germany, so I’d love to visit Europe, but my strongest desire is to visit Australia. What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?
My human mind keeps lapsing back into, “Look at this fun story that I wrote! God is blessing it.” And God keeps reminding that I don’t write ‘for’ Him and hope He will bless it, like some heavenly Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. Instead, writing is an act of worship and dependence on Him, and I need to ask Him daily to tell His stories through my fingertips … the stories He knows the readers He’s brought me need to hear.

I learned to look at my books that way, too. That’s why when a publisher doesn’t contract my proposal, I know it’s because it wouldn’t reach the readers He wants it to. Tell us about the featured book.
When is a box set not a box set? When it’s the gateway to a shared world where six authors are launching brand new contemporary romance series! Romance Grows in Arcadia Valley takes place in a fictional Idaho community where a foodie culture and romance grow hand-in-hand. It’s a collection of six novellas, one each by Mary Jane Hathaway, Elizabeth Maddrey, Lee Tobin McClain, Danica Favorite, Annalisa Daughety, and me (Valerie Comer). Each novella is the prequel to a three-book series. An Arcadia Valley Romance will release each month for the next year and a half!

That’s great. I’d love to feature each of them. Please give us the first page of the book.
My novella in Romance Grows in Arcadia Valley, Sow in Love, kicks off my Garden Grown Romance series. Here is its description:
Real estate consultant Joanna Kraus’s ideas for fulfilling a living trust are shot down by the elderly man’s grandson. In fact, it seems like sending her back to the drawing board is his primary joy. How can a vintage 1960s house and two greenhouses generate income for the church in receipt of the trust?
The more Grady Akers gets to know Joanna, the more he finds himself hoping it takes a long time to find a solution, but his charm may be no match for the armor wrapped around Joanna’s heart. Will the perfect solution for the property be perfect to grow a love that’s just been sown?

Here’s the first page:
“No, I don’t think so.”

Joanna Kraus pressed both hands on the boardroom table and stared at the infuriating man at the other end. “No? And why not?”

“I don’t think that’s what my grandfather has in mind.”

Why didn’t the elderly Mr. Akers come and speak to the committee himself? He was only old, not dead. He didn’t always make sense, they said, but the message had to be clearer than coming through a third party. Warning bells rang. Hadn’t Pierce used his dad’s name to stall the deal she’d put together for him?

She lifted her chin and met Grady Akers’ dazzling blue eyes. “Why don’t you explain what your grandfather wants instead of making me guess?” This proposal wasn’t going to fall through like this. Not on her watch. Not again.

Early spring sunshine angled in through the tall, narrow windows of the Grace Fellowship board room. Flames flickered in the gas fireplace. The other three committee members’ heads swung back and forth as though watching a tennis match.

“Ms. Kraus.” Grady flashed a winsome smile. “As I mentioned in my initial request, he wants the property to be used for something that benefits the church and the community. While bulldozing the structures and building a row of townhomes for low-income housing would definitely assist those who live in them, Granddad would prefer an option that is of lower cost and wider benefit.”

Of course, the Akers family dangled the carrot of additional funding in front of Grace Fellowship. No one could blame Joanna for thinking big.  All she needed was one or two solid, completed deals in her CV to set her consulting company on the right track again. This deal for her brother’s church — and hers, since she’d moved — should have been a slam-dunk.

I’m eager to see what happens next. How can readers find you on the Internet?

Thank you, Valerie, for introducing us to your book and the boxed set.

OTHER THAN A HALO - Valerie Comer - One Free Book

Welcome back, Valerie. Why did you become an author?
I became an author because God gave me stories to tell, the ability to tell them, and the patience and diligence to study the craft! Over time, I’ve become aware that writing is, for me, an act of worship in which I can create something and offer it back to the One who made me in His Creator image.

If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?
I once thought being an architect or interior designer would be the best job in the world.

If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?
I’m very thankful to live in a day and age where glasses and e-readers are a “thing.” Not so many years ago, people with my eye condition (Best Disease) wouldn’t have had written stories available to them. So I’ll take today and be thankful!

What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?
When I see those Facebook memes going around, I’m often astonished to discover I’ve seen more of the USA than many Americans, though I’m Canadian. Someday I’d love to visit the New England states and their counterpart in Canada, the Maritime provinces.

How about a foreign country you hope to visit?
My husband and I are planning a month-long trip to Great Britain in three or four years. That should check a few things off our bucket list!

What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?
When I was writing Other Than a Halo, God reminded me again that He doesn’t categorize sin as greater or lesser. Sin of any size is what keeps us from God, and He can and will forgive all of it if we only ask. This was something my heroine, Bren, struggled with, and it was a blessing to me to revisit that truth in my own life.

Sometimes, we need to go back and revisit how much the Lord has taught us. I love to do that. Tell us about the featured book.
Other Than a Halo is the second book in my Christmas in Montana Romance series.
Even though she’s a new woman in Christ, single mom Bren Haddock was no angel as a teen. Now managing the Hiller Farm for a CSA, life is good until a friend offers to enter her daughter into the Little Miss Snowflake Pageant. Old insecurities flare when she meets the intriguing head of marketing for the pageant.

Rob Santoro isn’t so sure about handling the pageant portfolio until he meets Bren. Soon he’s fallen for her and her two kids. When a Thanksgiving adventure goes awry, he’s left wondering how to love a woman who refuses to be loved.

What will it take for Bren to retire her tarnished halo and move into the future God has for her?

Please give us the first page of the book.
“Don’t you think it would be great fun for both girls?”

Bren Haddock stared at the mother of her daughter’s best friend. “Um, no. I pretty much think you’re crazy.”

“What’s crazy about it?” Kristen O’Brien’s brown eyes lit up with excitement. “It’s not competitive like the Miss Snowflake is for adult women. It’s just for fun.”

Bren spun her pottery mug on the table in Helena’s Fire Tower Coffee Shop and raised her eyebrows. “Have you never heard of Crowns for Kids?”

“Of course I have.” Kristen giggled. “Wasn’t that reality—” she air-quoted the word “—show nuts? There was nothing real about it. And this won’t be anything like it.”

Bren had watched several episodes, aghast at what some people would do for fortune and fame. She shook her head. “I can’t believe you want to put Lila and Charlotte through that. No way.”

“Todd and I will gladly pay Lila’s entrance fee and buy her dress—”

“No. I’m not a charity case.”

Kristen’s eyes softened. “I know that, Bren. I know how hard you’ve worked to get on your feet and make a solid home for your kids all on your own. How hard you work every single day. This is something Todd and I want to do. Call it our Christmas gift to Lila. She’ll have a couple of adorable outfits and some happy memories of a perfect Christmas week spent with her bestest friend in the whole world.” Kristen’s voice mimicked Lila’s.

“I don’t see how it can lead to anything good.” Bren met her friend’s eyes across the wooden table. Around them, the lunch crowd drifted out. “I really don’t. I appreciate that you guys have money and run in different circles than we do, but I don’t want to get dragged into this. I don’t want Lila thinking she can have whatever Charlotte has. She needs to learn to be satisfied with what I can provide, not want what other people have.”

WHISPERS OF LOVE (Secrets of Sunbeams) - Valerie Comer - One Free Ebook

Dear Readers, Valerie Comer is one of my author friends in Canada. I’ve really loved getting to know her, and her stories are wonderful.

Welcome back, Valerie. How did you come up with the idea for this story?
Secrets of Sunbeams kicks off a new series for me! I was poking around, trying to decide what a new series based on local food initiatives from an urban point of view might look like. Spokane, Washington, was rising to the top for a setting and, as soon as I discovered that Spokane allows backyard goats in parts of the city, the first scene of this novel popped into my head.

If you were planning a party with Christian authors of contemporary fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
Move that up to eleven invitations, and I'd absolutely love to have a real-life party with my fellow authors in the box set, Whispers of Love. I'd invite Kimberly Rae Jordan, Leah Atwood, Sally Bradley, Christina Coryell, JoAnn Durgin, Autum Macarthur, Lesley Ann McDaniel, Carol Moncado, Staci Stallings, Jan Thompson, and Marion Ueckermann.

We'd have so much fun chatting about characters and settings and first kisses! We'd also visit about how great it is to work together as a group to bring a multi-author box set to the public.

We're having a virtual week-long party on Facebook right now, and I hope you and your readers will join us, Lena! You can find it right here: https://www.facebook.com/events/891281694316682

Some of those authors are new to me, but the ones I know in the collection write books I love. Now let’s do that for a party for Christian authors of historical fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
This is a bit tougher for me, as I don't read much historical fiction. I'd have to start with you, Lena! Then I'd add Mary Connealy, Angela Breidenbach, Sherri Wilson Johnson, Leah Atwood, and Joanne Bischof.

We’d have a lot of fun. Thanks for including me. Many times, people (and other authors) think you have it made with so many books published. What is your most difficult problem with writing at this time in your career?
When Secrets of Sunbeams releases solo later in July, it will be my fifteenth title. Writing is a fulltime job for me, at least when I add in publishing and marketing! The hardest thing still is obscurity. I have accumulated many avid fans, which is awesomely cool, but I know there are many more readers who would enjoy my stories if only they knew about them.

This is the main reason I join multi-author box sets, such as Whispers of Love. A group of authors can reach many more readers than one author can alone.

That is so true. And the focus of my blog is to introduce good writers to readers. I love doing that. Tell us about the featured book, Secrets of Sunbeams.
Good fences make good neighbors.
Especially if your neighbor is a goat.

Eden Andrusek knows she should have fixed her fence last week. It’s too bad her runaway goat makes a less-than-ideal first impression on her new neighbor, who turns out to be cute, brilliant… and a little uptight.

Solar architect Jacob Riehl is furious when he returns outside to find a goat eating his presentation. As someone who likes everything in its place, he has little sympathy for a farm animal in the city or its tattooed owner, but there’s something about the lovely Eden that captures his attention.

What will it take to win over a man whose only pet was a goldfish? And how long can Jacob and Eden go without addressing the goat in the room?

Please give us the first page of the book.
Eden Andrusek stopped so suddenly the screen door slammed her backside. Where was Pansy? Eden shaded her eyes and glanced around the backyard. No way. She’d only been inside a minute.

“Pansy!” she yelled, jogging down the three steps to the barren yard. “Where are you?”

The answer seemed to be... nowhere. Eden’s gut clenched. No, no. No, no, no. This can’t be happening.

The gate at the side of the small house was definitely closed. The backyard was completely fenced with no hiding places. Except...

Eden’s pulse quickened at the sight of a vertical board in the side fence hanging slightly askew. She ran across the yard, nearly tripping over the metal bucket Pansy had been playing with, and pushed at the errant board. It swung aside. That was definitely enough room for the escape artist.

She crouched and peered through the gap into the neatly mowed lawn of the Victorian next door. A side table with a glass of something clear and red sat beside an empty deck chair facing...

“Pansy! No!”

The goat only glanced over as she chewed the paper dangling from her mouth.

The entire first chapter is available here: http://valeriecomer.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Sunbeams-ch-1.pdf

I love that opening. How can readers find you on the Internet?

DANDELIONS FOR DINNER - Valerie Comer - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, Valerie. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
Lena, I'm so excited about what's happening for me in writing and publishing. Dandelions for Dinner is the fourth book in the Farm Fresh Romance series, and I plan to write two more this year. Plum Upside Down is planned for release in the summer, and the final book in the series in late 2015 or early 2016.

I'm also writing and releasing five Riverbend Romance novellas this year. The first, Secretly Yours, is already out, and Pinky Promise is in final edits for an April release. I'm nearly finished writing the third one. Yes, I'm keeping busy!

Tell us a little about your family.
My husband and I live on a small farm in Western Canada, and we have two adult kids. Our son, daughter-in-law, and their two-year-old daughter live in a modular home on our farm. We love seeing them nearly every day. Our daughter, son-in-law, and their two daughters (ages five and three) live about 90 miles away, and we see them about twice a month.

My daughter is also my cover designer and illustrator. It's a delight to me to see her follow her artistic passions and grow a home-based-business of her own. It's also fun to have someone to talk shop with in a closely related, but not exactly the same, industry.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
It took years to level out my reading after I started writing. Now I set aside time for fiction every night before bed. Good thing I prefer Christian contemporary romance, because that’s a genre that doesn't tend to keep me awake as suspense would do! I love reading what my peers are writing—and what readers are gobbling up.

What are you working on right now?
I'm "this" close to having completed the first draft of the third Riverbend Romance novella. I'd hoped to have it finished in February, but life got away… and it wasn't just that February was a short month! I've also gotten a good start on the fifth Farm Fresh Romance, Plum Upside Down, and that will fill my writing hours for most of the next three months. I'll also be editing and releasing two novellas during that time.

What outside interests do you have?
In 2015, my writing career is my major focus. My husband and I always plant a vegetable garden, but we'll be scaling back this spring. We're looking forward to a three-week vacation on Vancouver Island in June, where I'll be doing research for my next series while we comb the beaches, fill up on seafood, and relax to the sound of the surf.

This spring I'm co-leading an Alpha group in my church and finding it challenging and exhilarating to watch people grapple with the big questions of Christianity. It's a wow experience for me as well as them.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
The Farm Fresh series all takes place on (fictional) Green Acres Farm in (fictional) northern Idaho, so that setting chose me several years ago. But to be a viable setting for one of my stories, a place (fictional or real) needs to have interesting things going on in local foods and sustainability. This has been a major part of my stories since the first Farm Fresh Romance, Raspberries and Vinegar (now free in e-book everywhere), and I don't see my focus shifting away. These are the unique aspects of my life that God has prompted me to share in story form, and I'm enjoying the process of looking at the assorted related topics from many angles.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
How much a part of me it would become. Sometimes I regret not starting to follow this dream earlier. Now I can't imagine life without my fictional characters and worlds. They've brought me so much joy and creative satisfaction.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
To take nothing for granted. I've had a few health issues in the last few months that counter-balance the success I'm seeing as an author. My health—my very life—is a gift from God. Each day, I thank Him for the new readers He's brought my way and ask Him to use the words He's given me to bless and/or challenge. Each day, I thank Him for imagination and the power of story. I'm awed to be in this position. Every day is an adventure.

It most certainly is. What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
Being an indie author/publisher is more rewarding than I ever imagined it could be. Don't be afraid to dip your toes into indie waters. You may find yourself happily swimming like a dolphin!

Write in series. I'm seeing strong sell-through from book to book. Once readers get to know a group of characters and a setting, they want to follow them around for a while. I changed my plans mid-stream from a three-book series to six. Dandelions for Dinner is the fourth Farm Fresh Romance novel, and readers are definitely picking up steam.

Grow your newsletter list. This is the best way to maintain your readership. I wrote a short story last fall and offered it to my email list. The story stands as 2.5 in my series. I figure that if someone has read the first two books in the Farm Fresh Romance series and is looking for more, they're ripe for my email list. My list has grown by over one hundred readers per month since adding the short story as bait for my list at the end of every book. Sure, some get the free story then unsubscribe. That's okay. The vast majority stick around and eagerly await news of the next release.

Tell us about the featured book?
Dandelions for Dinner

She hates him. He loves her not.

Men are weeds. Allison Hart doesn't need them in her carefully tended life, though her friends at Green Acres seem happy with their guys. Why can't Allison open her heart to anyone but her young nephew? Then again, he'll be a man one day, too. If only the irritating contractor in charge of building her home and farm school wasn't the boy's favorite person.

Fireworks with Brent Callahan's newest client shift from antagonism to the rocky possibility of a relationship. When he comes face to face with a history he'd much rather forget, he realizes hiding his failures isn't the best option for finding forgiveness, let alone love.

Can a little boy help weed out the past before it chokes their future together?

Please give us the first page of the book.
Allison Hart had perfected the art of staring out the window and checking her watch simultaneously. The contractor said he’d be here by ten, and it was now quarter after. If guys could be on time driving in Portland city traffic, how hard could it be on northern Idaho’s rural roads?

Waiting. Who had time for it? She tapped her foot and crossed her arms, not that there was anyone to see her. No one who lived at Green Acres was home today except her, which suited Allison just fine. She’d arrived at the communal farm three days earlier, and she’d already experienced about all the togetherness she could handle.

The rumble of a vehicle grew louder, and a white pickup with the emblem of Timber Framing Plus emblazoned on the side turned into the driveway.

Finally. Allison strode for the door, buttoning her cardigan against the cold March day as she went.

The contractor slammed the truck door and turned toward her, hard hat in hand.

Wait a minute. This wasn’t Patrick at all. This guy had a shock of black hair — unlike Patrick’s thinning salt-and-pepper — to say nothing of those dark brown eyes, slightly angled. Skin that on anyone else might look tanned but combined with the rest definitely tagged him of Asian descent.

Japanese? Thai? Didn’t matter. He could be Martian for all the difference it made. The biggest problem was, he wasn’t Patrick.

The guy tucked his hard hat under his arm and stretched out his hand. “Hi, I’m Brent Callahan from Timber Framing Plus.”

An Irish name? Unexpected.

“Allison Hart.”

He had a strong grip, like he knew what he was doing, even though he didn’t have the other man’s years of experience.

“Where’s Patrick?”

“Back in the office. He sent me out to check the footings.”

The wind had built up speed crossing the Galena Valley to get to her. Would it slam straight into the mountain beside the farm and come to an abrupt halt or find some other direction in which to continue? Either way, she should’ve worn something without the big holes in her bulky cardigan. She wrapped both arms around herself in an attempt to stay warm. “I was under the impression he was coming himself. I have a list of questions for him.”

Brent grinned. “Nothing I can’t answer, I’m sure. I’ve worked for him since high school.”

Her eyebrows shot up. When was that, last week?

“Ten years, ma’am.” He winked, set the hard hat on his head, and turned toward the construction site, where the perimeter of the new farm school lay outlined in concrete.

Ten years? That made the guy something like twenty-eight. He sure didn’t look it. Allison hurried after him. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to doubt your experience. I just expected Patrick. It’s his business, after all.”

Brent turned to face her, dark eyes unreadable. “Timber Framing Plus is a large company. We work on more than one project at a time. Patrick oversees them all, but that doesn’t mean he and his two best friends put into place every piece of wood that makes each structure.”

“But he said…” Allison’s words trailed away as she tried to recall the exact words in their discussion.

“What did he say, ma’am?”

Her temper flared. “My name is Allison, not ma’am.” It was a temptation to make him call her Ms. Hart so he’d remember which of them was the real boss on this site. Ma’am made her think of someone old with an unsavory reputation.

SWEETENED WITH HONEY - Valerie Comer - One Free Ebook

Bio: Valerie Comer’s life on a small farm in western Canada provides the seed for stories of contemporary inspirational romance. Like many of her characters, Valerie and her family grow much of their own food and are active in the local foods movement as well as their creation-care-centric church. She only hopes her creations enjoy their happily-ever-afters as much as she does hers, shared with her husband, adult kids, and adorable granddaughters. Valerie writes Farm Lit where food meets faith, injecting experience laced with humor into her award-winning Farm Fresh Romance stories.

Welcome back, Valerie. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
Oh, this is so true, Lena. I'm so amazed and blessed, and I'm so excited as I look into 2015. In the past year, I've had the privilege of independently re-publishing two novels from my previous publisher plus three original novels. In 2015, I expect to release three more novels as well as several novellas. It's so much fun to write again!

Tell us a little about your family.
My husband and I have been married for 34 years. We live on a small farm in western Canada where we grow much of our own food. I'm especially excited about this because we can help provide real food, nutritious food, organic food for our three little granddaughters (and their parents, LOL).

Our son lives in a mobile home on our farm with his wife and their little girl, and it's such a delight to see them nearly every day. My daughter's family lives only 90 miles away, but the two mountain passes between make it seem further! My daughter is my cover designer, which is another thrill for me.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
Yes and no. I've always read a lot. Since I began writing, my reading time has fluctuated, but I usually read fiction for an hour or so before bed. I love my genre, contemporary romance, and love discovering fresh new voices. I'm reading more consistently than I used to, and I have my Kindle to thank for that. Living in a rural area meant I didn't always have access to the books I wanted to read. Now that's not an issue.

What are you working on right now?
These days I'm finishing up Dandelions for Dinner, which will release in early March. It's the fourth book in my Farm Fresh Romance series. I expect to write and release the fifth and sixth books in the series in 2015, as well, so I'm keeping busy!

What outside interests do you have?
I’m a true introvert and, since my job left me two years ago, have become a fulltime author and freelancer. My vegetable garden and my family are my two major non-writing interests! My husband and I enjoy traveling in western Canada and camping beside the ocean or mountain streams. This time of year we're snuggling down for cold weather, though. I hope we have enough snow this winter for snowshoeing. Getting outside and moving around is vital for both my physical energy and mental energy.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
The Farm Fresh Romance series is set in northern Idaho, which is not far from where I live in Canada. I chose it because I needed a climate and growing season familiar to me for the farming aspects of the series. When I began the books, I was writing for traditional publishing houses that didn't want to see Canadian-set books. The series I'm eyeing for 2016 will likely be set on Vancouver Island, off Canada's west coast.

Oh, I’m so glad. I love books with foreign settings. I know the US is foreign for you, but Canada is foreign for me. If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
My dad, I think. He died in 1998, a few years before I began writing, and I believe he'd have been very proud of me and interested in my progress. He enjoyed writing, too, but no one could read his handwriting. He wrote a lot of poetry. I'd love to compare notes with him as the woman I am today rather than who I was back then.

I so understand. I’d choose my mother who died when I was 7. I’d love to know her as a woman. What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
I wish I'd learned to trust my instincts sooner. I lived under the mistaken impression far too long that a writer was either a plotter or a seat-of-the-pants writer. I couldn’t do either, and it was extremely frustrating. I've since learned that it's a spectrum and that I fall very close to the middle. I need to know certain things about my story in advance, and then I need to jump in and trust the process. There's been much less deep revision to do in the past several years, and my stories hold together so much better. How did I not figure this out five years earlier? It's a mystery.

Me, too. I’m closer to the seat-of-the- pants side of the spectrum though. What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
I find it interesting how much God teaches me through the novels I write. It's like He has some master plan or something. ;) But the characters in my current novel need a large dose of self-forgiveness and hope, and I'm finding myself challenged through their problems and conversations.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
1. Write another book. Don’t just write proposals, even if you're aiming for traditional publication. Write the whole thing. Write in a series. Keep in practice.
2. Grow your newsletter subscriber list. It's your most important tool. Send letters regularly. Create a giveaway for your subscribers that can be delivered to them automatically when they sign up. I recently changed up my giveaway to a short story that lands between the second and third books in my series. Peppermint Kisses is only available to subscribers. It seems to be quite effective. J
3. Create a business plan. Figure out how many books you can write in a certain time period and what marketing you can do. Lay your schedule out on one giant calendar, and push yourself a little.
And a bonus #4: Ask God to show you where He wants you every day. Let Him guide your imagination and fingers!

Very good advice. Tell us about the featured book.
Sweetened with Honey: A Farm Fresh Romance 3
Gabriel Rubachuk returns to Galena Landing, Idaho, once the setting of a charmed life before an accident killed his pregnant wife. Will he embrace hope for a new life or escape once again?

Beekeeper Sierra Riehl has spent three years helping to keep Gabe’s health food store afloat while he worked with orphans in Romania. Now he’s back, but it looks like he might bolt. Can she hold him still long enough to spark a romance? But Sierra’s hope falters when she begins to suspect she can’t give Gabe the life he deserves.

Is new love sweet enough to overcome the pain of the past and the uncertainty of the future?

Please give us the first page of the book.
Sierra Riehl had done a lot of strange things while studying natural medicine, but this seemed right up there with applying leeches to let blood. Straight out of medieval times.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” She set the jar containing two honeybees on the table in her naturopathy office.

“I think so.” Her friend eyed the bees crawling up the side of the glass. “I’ve read a lot of reports that say stings really help. My rheumatoid arthritis seems worse every day.”

“I know. That’s the only reason I’m agreeing.” Probably not what she should say out loud — and not what she would, if Doreen Klimpton’s symptoms hadn’t taken over so quickly. Her once-vibrant friend had shrunk in on herself in recent months.

“Where are you going to apply it?” Doreen kept her eyes on the jar as she settled her bony frame in the reclining chair. “Are you going to sting me twice?” Her thin fingers gripped the armrests.

“Maybe.” Sierra slipped a lab coat over her lilac dress. “I plan to start with one as a test. If things go well, we can do a second one. Or not, as you wish.”

Doreen nodded. “I can’t believe I’m doing this.” She took a deep breath. “Getting stung on purpose.”

Sierra couldn’t, either. Yet, since she’d taken up apiculture, she kept hearing old beekeepers say they never had arthritis. The venom from the many stings they inevitably incurred in the line of duty kept their joints at ease. Unprovable at the moment, but she’d be glad of the side benefit as she aged, no doubt. She’d never expected her boss to test the theory.

Doreen closed her eyes. “Do it already. The anticipation must be worse than the sting.”

Interesting. How can readers find you on the Internet?
My home base is http://valeriecomer.com . Once there, you can sign up for my newsletter, follow my blog, find out where food meets faith, or connect with me on social media. Oh, and find out more about my books, of course.

Thanks so much for inviting me over, Lena. It's always a pleasure chatting with you and your readers.

And it's a great pleasure to have you here, Valerie.

Welcome back, Angie. How did your story for the collection come about?
Originally we went to a publisher's spotlight at writing conference. After several video hangouts between the US and Canada, since we live across the border from one another, we settled on a generational story set in Helena, Montana. My character, Calista, is the great-great-great grandma to Valerie's character, Marisa. When we settled on that connection, the rest of the story started to come together in a lot of fun ways. But the research trip we did to Helena, MT together really cemented the whole thing. J
Okay, and we had a terrific time

What are you reading right now?
Right now I'm reading up on producing iTunes radio shows, lol. But I'm also reading a lot of other authors books as I edit for them professionally. So it hasn't left me much time for leisure reading.

What other books have you had published?
My first published book came out in 2011, Gems of Wisdom. Over the next two years I wrote a couple of cookbooks, published cards and devotionals, and recovered from a major car accident that causes shoulder surgery. Then in 2013, A Healing Heart released. I wrote devotionals and did a lot of journalism for another year, and then Snowflake Tiara. From here, the books are really starting to roll out, and it's getting quite exciting. I have another book releasing Sep. 30, Eleven Pipers Piping, and just signed a contract for Bridal Whispers coming out March of 2016. But in 2015, I have a Bible study series releasing called Charm Chats.

What is the hardest thing about writing a part of a novella collection?
I think the hardest part of being in a novella collection is needing to cooperate with someone else when you both have different ideas. When you're part of a team, it's not just your ideas that matter. So being willing to be flexible is important. I tend to press up against deadlines, fits right in with my night owl personality, while Valerie is an early bird. So learning different working styles, and accepting the person for it, is important. I'll always appreciate the experience.

How did collaborating with this team impact you?
I learned a lot about the process of collaboration. I also solidified personal questions I had about my career and what I wanted to achieve with it in the future. I think we had some unusual hurdles with international boundaries, but we managed to overcome them using Google + Hangouts, email, and we discovered iPhone messages were also free. So the communication issues were one of the biggest original challenges. I think it's impossible to try and create a joint project without intensely close communication.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
It's different every time. Sometimes I look through baby names from that era. Sometimes I've heard a name I love and want to create a character it fits. Once an entire character, name included, came to me sitting at a streetlight. So far, it's never happened the same way twice.

What did you want the reader to take away from your story?
I hope I've inspired and empowered readers to think about their own values and how they'll make choices on legalism versus love. No one has to come to the same conclusion. Different circumstances require different choices. I just hope they'll consider the reasons behind the choices and choose the godly one when it's presented. And yes, I hope to inspire a heart of volunteerism. It's a beautiful lifestyle that shares God's love in tangible ways.

Are you a member of American Christian Fiction Writers? If so, why?
I am. It's been a great networking opportunity for me.

What is the best piece of advice you received as an author?
To just be myself and build relationships. My voice comes from who I am, what I do, my past experiences, my dreams, and my failures. Write what I know, and that doesn't mean a job. It means to write my heart into my books, fiction or non-fiction.

Now, Angie, please tell us about the collection stories.
The Debutante Queen by Angela Breidenbach ~ 1889 (Helena, MT): Calista Blythe enters the first Miss Snowflake Pageant celebrating Montana statehood to expose the plight of street urchins. But hiding an indentured orphan could unravel Calista’s reputation, and her budding romance with pageant organizer, Albert Shanahan, if her secret is revealed. Will love or law prevail?

More Than a Tiara by Valerie Comer ~ 2014 (Helena, MT): Marisa Hiller’s interest in competing in Miss Snowflake Pageant for the city of Helena’s 150th anniversary is at zip zero zilch when she discovers the official photographer is Jase Mackie. Can Jase make amends for past mistakes and offer her, not only a tiara, but a partner in her crusade to help needy children and families?

Where can my readers find you on the Internet?

Thank you so much for having Valerie and me J

Angie

Welcome back,Valerie. How did your story for the collection come about?
When Angie and I first began talking about doing pageant-themed Christmas stories together, we agreed immediately that neither of us would compromise our personal brand for this collection. If we couldn't find a way to make them fully reflect our writing careers, then we wouldn't pursue the duology.

That said, once we started brainstorming via Google hangout (of which we've done many!), it didn't take long for my story to begin to take shape. I'm passionate about real food, farming, and gardening. These topics form the background of all my contemporary romances. So my character, Marisa, competes in the pageant to promote healthy food for families in need.

What are you reading right now?
I'm reading Runaway Heart, a contemporary romance novel by Theresa Slack.

What other books have you had published?
I've had one novella published in Rainbow's End (Barbour, 2012), and I indie-pubbed a fantasy novel, Majai's Fury, in July. The first two in my Farm Fresh Romance series were published by Choose Now Publishing. I got the rights back to those two books, Raspberries and Vinegar and Wild Mint Tea, when CNP closed their fiction line, and I republished them myself about a month ago. The third book in the series, Sweetened with Honey, will release in November, and I'm hard at work on the fourth, Dandelions for Dinner. I'm keeping busy!

What is the hardest thing about writing a part of a novella collection?
Snowflake Tiara is the second time I've taken part in a collection. Both times, I think, the hardest part was coordinating schedules. I tend to like to get things done well in advance, but then needed to wait to read and critique the other/s before I could finalize my own, so I'd be sure to get the background correct.

How did collaborating with this team impact you?
Angela and I have been close friends for several years. Working with her on this project has been a real blessing to me as we've shared what was on our heart with each other. I'm not really a beauty pageant kind of girl, having been raised in a traditional Mennonite home. Angie, on the other hand, is Mrs. Montana 2009. I've learned so much from her about true, internal beauty the way God sees me, and that has been life changing for me.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
I often search baby name sites for the most popular names the year my character was born. Sites that have the top 100-200 names are the most helpful, as I rarely want the most common name. Still, I usually find something that suggests a personality for the particular character I have in mind.

Until I have the right names for my main characters, I can't start writing. I also can't change names later very easily, as so much of their personalities and points of view are tied up in their names.

I keep a chart of all the names in a story and make sure to avoid multiple names that start with the same letter, that rhyme, or are too much the same length or rhythm. This is becoming a challenge for me in the Farm Fresh Romance stories, where I'm on the fourth book out of six!

What did you want the reader to take away from your story?
First, I want a reader to close the story with a sigh of contentment. I want her to have loved every moment spent with Marisa, Jase, and the rest of the cast. I want her to have felt the cold wind and falling snow during the sledding party, tasted the Christmas cookies and cocoa, delighted in the children, smelled the pines while the Christmas trees were decorated… and experienced the romance.

Next, I hope Marisa's growth as a character will linger. The story's tagline is equally applicable to my novella and to Angie's: What if you were caught doing something good, but the man you loved didn't see it that way? Marisa and Jase had a history together … and a nasty breakup over that particular question. How can she prove to him what her motives were … and are? How can he prove he's sorry for his part in the fiasco that separated them?

And finally, I hope my readers will be challenged to consider their food choices through Marisa's example and lifestyle. Most believers, in my experience, don't give a lot of thought to the junction where food meets faith. This intersection lays the foundation for all my contemporary romance stories.

Are you a member of American Christian Fiction Writers? If so, why?
Yes, I've been a member for 7-8 years now. I joined in the first place because of the Genesis contest for unpublished writers. Majai's Fury, the fantasy novel I self-published this summer, finaled in Genesis two different years.

I've stayed a member because of the friendships and wealth of information freely shared. Now that I've gone over to the indie side of publishing, I'm thankful for ACFW's recent moves to recognize the validity of the movement and provide support for authors who've chosen this path.

What is the best piece of advice you received as an author?
Don't be in a hurry to publish. When I started writing in 2002, this wasn't a huge temptation, other than I knew my earliest novels weren't worth bothering agents and editors with. Now that anyone can dash off a first draft (though it is never quite THAT easy, is it!) and upload it to Amazon without a second thought, I think it's vital advice. Slow down, learn the craft, join a critique group, polish your story, and write another one. If you don't find joy in the journey, you won't find it in the destination, either.

Where can my readers find you on the Internet?
My home base is at http://valeriecomer.com . Here you can explore the junction where food meets faith, read my blog, find my social media links, and sign up for my monthly newsletter.
