Welcome back, Diane and David. Why did you become an author?

(Diane) Writing has been in my bones since I was a young girl. In the second grade, a friend and I wrote and staged a play for the neighborhood kids. We made a theater out of cardboard and puppets with string for hair. As a lawyer, representing clients involves telling their story to a judge, the jury, or the opposing side. I enjoy bringing voice to everyday heroes and making their dreams and struggles come alive on paper. In crafting Christian suspense with my husband David, we want to highlight God’s love through Jesus.

(David) Diane asked me to type her first historical fiction, which she’d written by hand onto legal paper. Helping her realize her dream led to publishers wanting Christian suspense written by both of us. It’s been a fun ride taking cases from my career as a federal agent and spinning stories with Diane.

If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?

(David) I had my dream job before I was an author. Most people want a job that provides satisfaction and that has the respect of others. For twenty-seven years, I was a criminal investigator for the Federal Government. As a Special Agent for NCIS and later DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration), I faced the challenge of outwitting criminals who would take advantage of society. As an undercover agent, I sometimes infiltrated their criminal organizations, recorded their criminal boastings on tiny recorders taped to my body, and traveled with them to foreign countries. There was great satisfaction when these persons were sentenced to prison as the result of my testimony. Not only was it a great career, it also provides endless fodder for our suspense novels.

(Diane) As with David, I had my dream job before I became an author. After practicing as a lawyer, I was appointed by President Reagan to his Justice Department. That assignment gave me the opportunity to interact with the White House and Congress as we worked on policy issues affecting the nation. Then I served as a Federal prosecutor in Washington, DC, bringing to justice those who committed crimes. What more could a girl want? I met such an assortment of people whose identity can be disguised when they’re written into our novels.

If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?

(Diane) Without a doubt, it would be when Jesus lived. How precious to have known Him, to sit under His teaching and know Him face-to-face. Because of His sacrifice, one day I will bow before His throne!

(David) While the question suggests past history, I am a creature of modern comforts so it’s hard to imagine living in the past. I would like to be alive when the rapture occurs and in the twinkling of an eye, Christ returns for those who’ve put their faith in Him.

What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?

(David) The coastal region of Maine.

(Diane) It would be wonderful to tour Alaska and visit God’s creation near Denali. David and I love to go walking and bird watching.

How about a foreign country you hope to visit?

A mission trip to the Amazon River basin, would be great.

What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?

We live in an age of uncertainty more than ever before. Trusting in God is all the more essential. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to trust the Lord with ALL our heart. The emphasis is ours. God has shone us what it means to trust Him completely and not to hold back a portion of our hearts, even a tiny bit. Fear, worry, doubt, can creep in, but He is faithful in every circumstance and is trustworthy.

Tell us about the featured book.

Embers of Courage is the culmination of a fifteen-year effort. Years ago, Diane began writing a novel set in the fifteenth century, including Johann Gutenberg’s printing press and what it was like for her early ancestors in the Netherlands to possess one of the first Bibles. After the terrorist attacks of 9/11, a publisher asked us to write a suspense thriller. Demand for historical fiction was waning at that time. Eight thrillers later, in Embers of Courage we return to Christians being targeted now and in years past.

Federal Agent Eva Montanna is plunged into a daring rescue operation when Egyptian terrorists capture her taskforce partner, NCIS agent Raj Pentu. Eva puts her life in danger to defeat tyrants oppressing Coptic Christians. Meanwhile, her teen-age daughter Kaley faces discrimination in school for her Christian beliefs. Eva’s ancient family Bible, mysterious ashes, and fifteenth century persecution collide, revealing her courage in trying circumstances. The cover design shows that weapons of humans will turn to ash in the power of Jesus’ return and symbolizes how the embers of courage from past martyrs brings strength to us today. Our ninth thriller is the third in which we highlight history (See also: The Camelot Conspiracy and Stolen Legacy).

April in Fairfax County, Virginia

Federal Agent Eva Montanna hadn’t been home from church more than five minutes before her husband Scott and their three kids became glued to the TV. A roar coming from an auto race was so thunderous, it shook the plates she’d set on the dining room table. How could she ever tune out such earsplitting noise?

Her job as a special agent with the Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) was hectic, and often carried over into the weekend. But this Sunday she had off. An idea spun in Eva’s mind as she hustled to the raucous family room.

“Let’s all head to the exhibit for veterans at Patriot Park,” she announced.

It was as if her clan hadn’t heard a word. They were hooting too loudly. Her son Andy tore open a bag of chips and plopped next to Scott, who reached in the bag.

“Thanks, buddy.”

As Scott shoved a fistful of chips in his mouth, Eva left the room to Scott’s cries, “His tire’s goin’ down!”

Eva opened the fridge, noticing a leftover chicken casserole among the purple containers. Her family didn’t act as if they wanted to sit around the table, so she took down five bamboo trays. She would go support the local veterans by herself after lunch. Because of their sacrifice, she and her family could live and worship freely.

Another idea gripped her. She and the kids could help the church youth group place American flags on graves of fallen soldiers. She turned back toward the race zone.

“He hit the wall!” Andy blurted.

At fifteen, he loved all kinds of action. Dutch, their youngest, sat on Scott’s other side, and Kaley, her seventeen-year-old daughter, looked precious wearing a cap from her favorite driver. Eva left them to enjoy their fun time, and sped to the small antique desk in the far corner of the living room. She wrote a quick note to the pastor. On the way back to the kitchen, something sparkling on the mantelpiece caught her eye.

The sun shone through the picture window, its rays brightening an ornate metal container. Eva did a double take. Inside that round container rested a pouch of unexplained ashes. Up until now, she’d blocked those ashes from her memory. How come?

Last summer, she and Grandpa Marty found a deerskin pouch at his farm in Zeeland, Michigan. All he could remember was that his Dutch aunt had given it to him at WWII’s end. Eva had secured the pouch in the container several months ago. The ashes had apparently rested undisturbed for centuries. She now traced the filigree with her finger.

CREATION OF CALM - Mark Fraley - One Free Book

Welcome, Mark. What would you like for our readers to know about you personally?

I’m so appreciative of the responses I have gotten from people who have read my book and who have taken time to say a few words about it. I am an introvert, not the most outspoken person and am happy with just being a part of things without being front and center. Having a book out that reveals a lot about me on many different levels is still a little frightening, but I am happy it inspires and brings something uplifting to others.

Things I like to do include play guitar, run around and make trouble with my three kids, watch movies with my wife for the first 10 minutes before I fall asleep (almost every time), and any kind of activity that requires some amount of creativity. I also have recently gotten into reading a lot of poetry (Christian Wiman, Mary Oliver, Billy Collins to name a few).  There are, in fact, very few things I do not like to do; I am always looking for new things to learn to do and experience. Writing a book certainly was a new experience! As a father of three kids, time for creative ventures is often on short supply.  My “best” work often happens early in the morning before everyone is up. I teach early childhood special education for a living and have done that now for almost 15 years.

Tell us about your family.

I have been married now for 14 years. I met my wife Breanne in college at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas. We moved to Seattle after I earned my Early Childhood Special Education Masters from the University of Kansas. My three kids, Xavier (9 yrs. old), Sebastian (6 yrs. old), and Greta (3 yrs. old) were all born in the same hospital on Capitol Hill in Seattle. We are now living in Colorado to be close to my wife’s family.

My parents were missionaries in France for over 30 years, and that’s where I grew up along with my two brothers. We went to French public schools, had French friends, and appreciated the diverse amount of delicious cheeses that exist there! Basically, we were French minus the times when it was just our family at home and we spoke English predominantly. My family is essentially bilingual, some trilingual, and a love of language has been present since I can remember.

Have you written other nonfiction books?

This is my first book that has been published. I have been featured in the Exceptional Children textbook that is published by Pearson and edited by William Heward, as the featured teacher in the Early Childhood Intervention chapter. I wrote a short bit about myself, strategies for new teachers, and insight into what it is like to be an early childhood special education teacher.

Do you have any other books in the works right now?

I have a project based on fatherhood that is in its beginning stages. It follows a similar format with an illustration and written portion for each entry. One day, combing through Facebook, a good number of “fatherhood” pictures were showing up through my feed. The idea to sketch them and match them with a set of interview questions from a father’s perspective seemed like a good way to put it together. It is also a subject I am immersed in on a daily basis; I feel its themes are hard to exhaust.

What kinds of hobbies and leisure activities do you enjoy?

I play the guitar and love anything music related. I also enjoy playing basketball when I get the chance, along with volleyball, backyard football with my boys, and ping pong (I have an actual ping pong trophy won with my father in a doubles tournament!). I create artwork in a variety of media, but my two favorite remain collage and charcoal. I find a wide range of activities interesting, and sometimes I try to do too many things at once.

Why did you write the featured book?

I wrote Creation of Calm for a number of reasons: first of all, to inspire and help others with their battle with cancer. Secondly, to share the story of how God works through whatever circumstance may show—his peace can be felt no matter where you find yourself. Thirdly, it was a creative challenge that fit with pushing the limits of what I thought I could accomplish or achieve. My older brother and I have a creative competition of sorts that began with the publishing of a story he wrote, titled “Uncommonly Normal.” I told him if he would publish his story, I would hold my first gallery show soon after. And that I did! And I did not stop at that. This book is a continuation of sorts, letting him know that the ball is back in his court. Finally, I wrote this book for my children to leave a legacy of sorts, something that I hope can be around after I am not.

What do you want the reader to take away from the book?

I would like them to see that there is beauty in our everyday lives. We often miss it because we are so busy with a million things. Cancer forced a drastic slowdown in just about every aspect of my life, and this slowdown pushed me to see what was directly in front of my eyes. I also want readers to see that being invested in a creative pursuit can have such a positive impact on one’s life; in my case you could say it provided a means of healing.

Is there anything you’d like to tell my readers about you or your book?

I am always interested in finding out how readers respond to my book. I like to find out which entry is their favorite and why. Also, to see how they respond to the art, what are they moved by when they see the collage series titled “Calm.”

WHERE RIVERS PART - Kellie Coates Gilbert - One Free Book

Welcome back, Kellie. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?

Oh, Lena—you are so right!  I’ve been blessed beyond measure. Every day I have to pinch myself when I realize that God heard the outrageous prayers of a woman going to work in a law firm day-after-day who wanted to be a full-time novelist.

I’m excited to report to readers that I have two books releasing this year. Where Rivers Part is available for pre-order now and will be in stores on February 17. A Reason to Stay releases in October.

I must feature the October book on my blog. Please, Kellie, tell us a little about your family.

Next summer, my husband and I will celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. We raised two boys, both adults now. The oldest is married and has two darling children we adore.  We’re blessed that they all live here in the Dallas area.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?

(Here’s where the author laughs out loud) We’ve talked about this before, haven’t we, Lena. Both of us agreed how hard it is to read without an internal editor talking in our heads. And of course, it’s really difficult to read as many books as I used to when I’m writing on such tight deadlines.  That said, I still read ... a lot!  Books are simply a part of my soul.

I have to say that I don’t have that internal editor problem when reading your books. They are so well written, and the stories really grab me. What are you working on right now?

Soon I’ll be editing the third book in the Texas Gold collection, and I’m currently writing the final one which will be available June, 2016.

What outside interests do you have?

I’m a political junky. Soon, I’ll be immersing myself in the upcoming presidential campaign and likely attending a lot more fundraisers and doing some volunteer work.  I also golf and enjoy swimming in our backyard pool.

How do you choose your settings for each book?

In this set of books (the Texas Gold collection), I worked with my publishing team and together we established that each of the releases would be set in a metropolitan city in Texas.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?

I’ve been asked this before, and it’s always so difficult for me to select just one. I’m looking forward to being in heaven and sitting with several characters from the Bible, but one in particular. I think I have a lot in common with Peter, people with good intentions that are only accomplished when we give our plans fully over to God.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?

I don’t think I really comprehended how thrilling it is to get an email from a reader telling you how your book changed their life. Perhaps if I had known the utter responsibility of the power of story, I might have been less emboldened to step onto this publishing path.

I know what you mean about hearing from readers. When I do, it’s the high point of my day. What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?

At the beginning of every year, I think long and hard and pray about choosing a word to signify the theme of my upcoming twelve months. This year I was surprised to hear my word was ABIDE….which represents a deep (and solo) partnership with Jesus, especially in this new career I’ve elected to embark upon.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?

Ha, Lena—I’m good at offering up advice (smiles).  But, here it is:

READ…..READ…..READ SOME MORE.

BUY BOOKS…..AND SUPPORT THE INDUSTRY THAT SUPPORTS YOU.

ABIDE…..BECAUSE THIS PUBLISHING BUSINESS IS HARD WORK WITH MANY PITFALLS AND YOU HAVE TO RELY SOLELY ON JESUS TO MAKE IT.

Years back, I worked on a legal matter involving a deadly food-borne outbreak resulting from undercooked hamburger that sickened many and nearly toppled a major corporation.

When the executive in charge of quality control was deposed, the plaintiff’s attorney vilified him, suggesting his lack of oversight caused several toddlers’ deaths. As you might expect, this took its toll. But none of us in that room anticipated the moment the man buried his head in his hands and fell to tears.

Behind those tears, there was a story I wanted to tell ... even if only in my imagination.

Please give us a key scene from the book for my readers.

Excerpt from Where Rivers Part (Baker/Revell):

Juliet took a seat opposite Greer, next to Dale Frissom, vice president of operations, while Alexa announced she had extremely good news. “We’re about to close a deal with Water Circus,” she reported. With her pen, she pointed at Greer. “Your team did an excellent job putting together the proposal and making the pitch.”

A slight smile broke at the corners of Greer’s mouth. “Thank you.” He pulled at his right cuff. “The deal was a bit tricky. We worked hard to put this one in the bag.” A smug assurance played across his face.

Alexa rewarded him with a wide smile. “The prospect of this deal clinched our merger with Montavan. But Greer’s right. The negotiations have been tricky.” She tapped her pen against her open palm and turned to Dale and Juliet. “Surprisingly, Water Circus wants to increase volume immediately to levels far greater than we anticipated. If we can meet the demand, they have agreed to give us exclusive retail rights for all the bottled water at the park.” As she said this, her eyes took on an excited shine. “All of it . . . Do you have any idea what that means?”

Greer chimed in. “A bottom-line increase of over twelve million dollars annually.”

Dale rubbed his cheek. “And a pretty fair strain on production resources. We’re not at capacity yet, but what are we talking here?”

Alexa explained what would be required, adding that she’d make sure he had the equipment and personnel needed to accomplish the job.

Dale slowly nodded. “Well, if necessary, we can lease an additional facility. There’s plenty of vacant warehouse space nearby.” His face broke into a grin. “I’m in.”

Alexa clapped her manicured hands. “Excellent. We can look to an outside staffing agency for any administrative support. Now, we need a commitment from the quality assurance area as well.”

All eyes turned to Juliet.

She swallowed, wondering if the people sitting at the table could hear her pounding heart. In her short time with Larimar Springs, she’d worked hard to upgrade the lab and establish expanded protocols. She still had much she wanted to address in terms of developing an audit plan and staff training. A substantial increase in production would slow these critical plans.

As if reading her thoughts, Alexa lifted her chin and pressed for an answer. “Is there a problem, Dr. Ryan?”

“No—no, of course QA will make that commitment,” she assured everyone around the table, willing her confidence to match their own. “Providing we are allowed enough time to maintain our sampling protocols.”

Alexa’s eyes narrowed. “Be specific.”

“Specifically, we can work harder and faster, but incubation periods cannot be rushed.”

“We expect the need to be great and grow rapidly. I can’t stress enough how critical it is for every area to fully support this opportunity.” Greer turned to Alexa, not bothering to stifle his concern. “Dr. Ryan has only been on board a short time. Perhaps we need—”

“Are you suggesting you can’t handle the increase?” Alexa asked her.

“I hope that’s not what you’re saying,” Greer injected. “Because there is an awful lot riding on this deal. For everyone.”

“We’ll handle it.” Juliet took a deep breath and glared across the table in his direction. “I assure you, my department will do whatever it takes.”

DEADLY ECHOES - Nancy Mehl - One Free Book

Dear Readers, I read this book last week. It’s another book in Nancy’s series set in a town named Sanctuary. I’ve loved all these books, and I think this one is my favorite. She writes romantic suspense novels that cross the lines between Mennonites and non-Mennonite people. The characters in this one were especially poignant. Their losses really touched my heart and are still with me. You won’t want to miss this book.

Welcome back, Nancy. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?

One theme overrides any other, and that is that God has a plan for our lives. All of us are unique and no matter what mistakes we make or what trials we endure, His plan never changes.

I like to encourage readers to see themselves as God sees them. Special, anointed, gifted, and completely and passionately loved. I believe it’s hard to become everything God has created us to be without first understanding how deeply we’re loved, forgiven, and accepted by our Father.

That is so true. What other books of yours are coming out soon?

I’m working on a cozy Amish mystery series, along with several other authors, for Guideposts. The first book in the series will release later this year. Also, the third book in my Finding Sanctuary series, Rising Darkness will be out toward the end of 2015.

I want to feature the Finding Sanctuary book on the blog. If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?

I thought a lot about this question, and to be honest, it wouldn’t be anyone famous. I would spend the evening with a friend I don’t get to see often. Several come to mind, including Laurel Johnson. It’s been many years since we’ve been together. She doesn’t travel, and I haven’t been able to drive to see her. I would love to spend an evening talking about life and writing. She’s one of the best writers I’ve ever known. I worry sometimes that we’ll never see each other again in this life.

I hope you get that opportunity soon. What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?

I have a deep appreciation for Joseph. He went through so much, but he never lost faith in God. His patience and faith touched me deeply. And when he could have paid back evil for evil, he chose forgiveness and love. When studying him, I had a reaction that surprised me. When it was time to go on to something else, I actually broke down and cried. I felt as if I were saying goodbye to a close friend. I desperately want to be more like him.

He is one of my favorite Bible heroes, too. How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?

I’d ask them if they’d like to see my file of rejections. It’s quite a thick file! Here’s the thing: If you believe God has called you to write – then write. Work hard to learn more and hone your skills – that’s your part. But then you must trust God to open the right door at the right time. It sounds easy, but it isn’t. Many writers give up along the way. Be stubborn. That “yes” you’re looking for could be right around the corner. The best writing advice I ever received? Never give up.

Tell us about the featured book.

Deadly Echoes is about Sarah Miller. After a youth filled with tragedy and upheaval, Sarah's life is finally settled with all echoes of the past silent at last. She happily calls Sanctuary her home and spends her days teaching at the local school.

Sarah's joy at her recent reunion with her sister, Hannah, and meeting the niece she didn't know she had is too soon interrupted when Deputy Sheriff Paul Gleason informs Sarah her sister has been killed.

As she learns more about Hannah's death, the circumstances are eerily similar to their parents' murder. Sarah enlists Paul's help in digging deeper into the murders the police are dismissing as burglaries gone wrong. Paul's concern encourages Sarah's growing feelings for him, but as their investigation peels back the layers of lies almost twenty years old, they get close to uncovering the truth one person will do anything to hide—even if that means coming after the last remaining members of the Miller family.

The old familiar fear returned with a vengeance, along with the musty smell of neglect and the sweet scent of sweat.

I was back in that small dusty place under the stairs. The one place in the house that escaped Mom’s rigorous weekly cleaning. It was used to store things that were only needed on special occasions. Like our old luggage and the cane Dad used when he sprained his ankle.

 

But this night, the often ignored storage area was the most important place in the entire world. Hannah’s arms tightened around me, and she whispered in my ear that I must be quiet. Dear Readers, today we're featuring a children's book that really sounds interesting. I know you'll love meeting and learning about the author.

Welcome, Angela. What has drawn you to writing for children?

I studied journalism and planned to work for a magazine but ended up starting my family earlier than expected and becoming a full-time mom. This meant lots of time in the library for story time and lots of inspiration to write stories of my own.

I mean, when taking my kids to a Tumble Time birthday party and seeing an ad for “senior discounts,” I had to write a rhyming manuscript titled Gymnastics Grandma. And when my daughter used the moves of a quarterback (think rubber ducky under her arm like a football) to avoid getting dressed after a bath, I had to write Naked Baby on the Run. And when my son fell asleep holding onto the dollar bill he made from dumping a cup of water on me at a church picnic, I had to write The Water Fight Professional.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?

I once won a television and Xbox in a hamster ball race. Yes, I was the one running in a giant ball. Though is that quirkier than that time I rode on the shoulders of a unicyclist? I’m not sure.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?

In fourth grade, we had to write tall tales. The kids in my carpool read it aloud on the way home and got the whole car laughing. So I pretended to lose it and have to write another one the next day. And the next day.

My mom was also a writer, so I grew up reading stories of myself in magazines like Women’s World. In high school, I wrote a story and figured I’d send it to a magazine like Mom did. Easiest $100 I ever made. I was hooked. Though it hasn’t always been that easy. Ahem … it wasn’t ever that easy again.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.

I like stories that are both light-hearted and thought-provoking. Usually contemporary. Kids’ books and romantic comedies are my favorites.

What other books have you written, whether published or not?

My debut novel was part of the Love Finds You series. Mine was Love Finds You in Sun Valley, Idaho. Awesome experience to be involved with such a fun line. Might be the only Costco book-signing I ever do.

My short story The Water Fight Professional got picked up by the New York school board and printed in over half a million tests, so I decided to make it into a middle-grade novel. That book released last July followed by The Snowball Fight Professional this winter. Up next are The Food Fight Professional and The Pillow Fight Professional.

Then I wrote a book called Lighten Up about a pastor’s daughter who couldn’t forgive her father for running off with the church secretary until she fell in love with her own pastor. That came out with a small press. I’d hoped to make it a series and actually wrote the second book, but that project is on hold for now.

My agent is currently shopping Romancing the Throne about an American woman who grows up in the West Indies and meets a prince on vacation. They plan to marry until he hires a private investigator to dig up her past and discovers her father to be a fugitive from the United States. To prove her father innocent and regain her position as future royalty, Jacqueline James hires the same PI to go back to Miami with her, never expecting to develop stronger feelings for her knight in shining armor than she has for Prince Charming. Somebody buy this book!!! It’s so fun I want to share it with the world.

I also made it to the final round of the Harlequin “Killer Voices” contest last year with Presumed Dead about the daughter of the Peruvian President whose plane crashed in the Amazon and nobody knows she actually made it to America except for a missionary who recognizes her in a homeless shelter … and the men who want to kill her. The editors said my manuscript didn’t have the right tone for their line, so I’m reworking it to make it longer before I submit to other publishers. And I’m working on Twice Removed to submit to Harlequin next. Hopefully I learned a little something through the first book and won’t get twice rejected.

And last (thank you for making it this far), I have a novella coming out as part of a boxed set with a couple of my Love Inspired author friends next month. False Security is about a former cop who teams up with the man she’d once arrested to prove themselves innocent of an unsolved crime and regain the lives they’d lost. They fall in love, of course, but since they don’t trust each other, she ends up pulling a gun on him and stuff. Tee-hee.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?

I kind of have to divide my life up into moments where I think, moments where I feel, and moments where I simply focus on getting the job done. Otherwise I’m an over-thinking, overemotional slacker.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of, besides family?

And besides winning the hamster ball race? Just kidding. My first instinct is to say it’s winning Idaho Top Author for two years in a row now, but really those awards mean nothing compared to the individual letters I get from readers. Awards are nice, but I do this to touch lives. To be able to do that is a huge honor.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?

I’d be a dolphin, which is funny since I didn’t take swimming lessons until college and I have a snorkel phobia. But there’s never been any other answer for this question.

What is your favorite food?

Homemade bread. Take me out to a steak restaurant and I will fill up on the bread before dinner even arrives. Mmm … I can almost smell the sweet yeast and buttery crust baking right now.

Is it hard to break into the children’s market?

Yep. “You must write for children in the same way as you do for adults, only better." --Maxim Gorky

What advice would you give to an author wanting to do that?

Join Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). Read children’s book—especially in the genre you want to write. Try selling some short stories to magazines first. Attend conferences to meet editors and agents and learn more about the art and the business. Enter contests. And do it because you love it.

The most common question I get asked is about picture books. They are the hardest sell because they are the most expensive to print. You don’t have to have an illustrator, but you do have to understand that your story will be laid out over 32 pages and how your words will flow with the illustrations. Usually keep the manuscript under 1,000 words. In the Christian market, most picture books are written by authors who are successful in other genres first.

Also, DON’T preach. Unless you are writing Sunday school material.

What would you like to tell us about the featured book?

The Food Fight Professional is book #3 in my Fun 4 Hire series for ages 8-12. They don’t have to be read in order, but hopefully reading one will make you want to read them all. And I do mean you—not just your kids. They make a great read-aloud for families. The book releases Pi Day, which is significant to the story (as often schools serve actual pie on this day, which makes for an even bigger food fight). Pi Day is based on the symbol in math that starts out 3.1415, so it is always celebrated on 3/14, but even cooler, this year it will be 3/14/15.

The Food Fight Professional is dear to my heart because I included a couple of adopted brothers from my Sunday school class. Their mom calls them “The Haitian Sensations,” and they are truly sensational. Putting them in this book adds tension since the boys come from a background where food is scarce. It made me think, anyway.

LEGITIMATE LIES - Julie B Cosgrove - One Free Book

Welcome back, Julie. Why do you write the kind of books you do?

The answer may sound glib, but I feel God calls me to write them, be it a suspense romance novel or another Bible study. He truly is my inspiration. I think at heart we are all story-tellers, and as Christians we are called to tell our story (and His) so others can be led to Christ. As a writer, I have the humbled honor of taking that a step further.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?

The day my son was born pops into my head, but coming a close second is the day I learned I was under contract with a traditional publisher. What an affirmation! God had just granted me my life-long dream.

How has being published changed your life?

It has humbled me so very much. I tear up thinking about how gracious God is to let me live out this dream of writing. I am more at home in my computer clicking away on the keyboard than I am in an easy chair. I’d keep doing it even if nobody took the gamble to contract me. The fact that I have three novels contracted to publish in 2015 still amazes me. Yet I feel a burden of responsibility as well. I think many of us Christian writers do. We are not writing for ourselves.

What are you reading right now?

A wonderful cozy mystery by Sharon McGregor called Island Charms. She’s also a Prism Book Group author. Then I have three more I want to get to, one by my all-time favorite author Mary Stewart. I have been reading hers since I was in sixth grade. She passed over fifteen years ago, but I discovered one of her last I hadn’t read. Cozy mysteries are my favorite, always have been.

What is your current work in progress?

I have two. I am fine-tuning and editing Freed to Forgive which takes one of the minor characters from Hush in the Storm (released Aug 4, 2014) and Legitimate Lies (released Jan 14, 2015) and tells her story over a ten year period. Then, I am also writing a romance novella called Navy Blues, based on one of the love aspects –“love is not self-serving”— in I Corinthians 13.

What would be your dream vacation?

Returning to England and taking a course at Oxford. Britain is my familial and religious roots. I was blessed to be embedded with a family for ten days there a few summers ago on a church sponsored tour. My other “dream come true.”

How do you choose your settings for each book?

I choose places I have been or want to see. The latter I thoroughly research until I can “walk the streets” in my mind. For almost two years, I wrote for a travel website and researched cyberspace for places and attractions that would appeal to a young family, a pet lover, and a business person, and I believe that training helps me truly visualize my scenes for my readers.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?

Max Lucado or Joyce Meyer. Both of their writings spoke to me at very crucial times in my spiritual life.

They are two of my favorite authors as well. What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?

Word puzzles and vegging out on British mysteries and period novels on Netflix. Well, I am a Downton Abbey aficionado as well. Like my main character, Jen, I was weaned on Earl Grey with cream. A pure Anglophile. I also am a professional public speaker and workshop leader. I truly love meeting and leading other women to grow deeper in Christ.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?

Finding the time to zone out everything else. I literally itch to write. When I get that feeling, I know I need to carve out at least a day to “scratch.” But putting a fence around that time now-a-days is hard, isn’t it? My family and close friends are slowly learning I am serious when I say I can’t do something or go somewhere because I need to write. It’s not a lame excuse like, “I need to wash my hair.”

What advice would you give to a beginning author?

Write until you reach the end, then find a supportive critique group with at least one or two published authors in it and let them help you polish it and grow in the craft. Nothing will please them more, and then someday you will do the same for someone else.

Tell us about the featured book.

Legitimate Lies is a continuation of Hush in the Storm. I didn’t plan it that way, it just sort of happened. The Editor in Chief loved Hush in the Storm so much she encouraged me to write it.

Jen, who has been shoved into witness protection, must learn to live a legitimate lie about who she is. But one secret in her past keeps haunting her, and until she deals with that, she cannot move on with her new life. However, revealing this deep-seated shame may risk her one chance at happiness and love. Will she decide to just live the lie?

​Did I really want this baby? Yes.

Wait…no. Absolutely not.

The barricade of lies I’d droned into my head over the past few months, crumbled the moment little Josh Holder discovered her on the front steps of the Bonita Springs Public Library. She lay on the hard concrete, swaddled in a pink, crocheted throw. Innocent eyes, tucked into chestnut skin, widened as they peered into mine. Thick, straight strands encircled her head in a coal-colored halo.

I knew at once who she was—and that wounded me deeper than I’d ever imagined it could.

“Look. It was taped to her blanket.” Josh teetered on his eight-year-old tiptoes to show me.

My business card—“Sheila Williams-Library Assistant.” What on earth? I tucked a fly-away strand of auburn hair behind my ear. On the back, in a decidedly masculine scrawl, it read, “She’s yours if you want her.”

Mine, if I want her? The card trembled between my fingers. A tumult of emotions swirled inside me like a Dervish dancer. Anguish because she was my now-imprisoned husband, Robert’s, illegitimate child. Anticipation she could be what I secretly desired—a baby of my own. Anger that she existed at all. The inner turmoil mimicked the twirling leaves on the sidewalk in front of the library whipped into a tiny tempest by the tropical storm brewing above us.

Thunder rumbled. Or did my heart thump a warning inside my eardrums? No one from my past in Texas was supposed to know I now lived in Florida—except for Becky, who’d help me settle in my new life. But she wouldn’t tell. Her job depended on that. So who could have dropped off this child?

I scanned the city block. Then, I saw him. Tom. The one man I’d almost trusted. A smile eased across my mouth. He’d kept his promise to Robert after all. He’d made sure the baby lived. Now, Robert’s hold on him was broken. The old Navy buddy debt paid.

Oh, how I envied Tom’s freedom from my husband’s evil vice grip. My thumb rubbed the place where my wedding ring once sat on my finger. My faith told me I remained shackled to Robert—for better or for worse—even though the Feds had changed my identity and my marital status when I entered witness protection.

Tom tipped an imaginary Stetson in my direction. My mouth opened, but no words came out. There was too much to say, and none of it mattered now. So all I did was return the gesture with a slight nod, hoping he’d hear my heart beat for his.

Josh tugged on my sleeve. “Who’s that?”

“Just a man saying hello, I guess.”

But Tom had been so much more.

Welcome back, Lisa. If you were planning a women’s retreat, what would be the theme for it?

I’d love a retreat that focused on each person realizing their value in God’s eyes and how He can use ordinary people—like each one of us—for extraordinary things. And where women could see that they’re not alone in this journey.

I like the sound of this already. Who would you want as speakers and why?

The first name that came to me was Elizabeth Elliott. She’s been such an influence on my life as someone who lost so much and yet in the process gained so much from her dedication to serving God no matter what.

I studied her life a lot when I was writing for Accelerated Christian Education, because they wanted me to write about her. That would be a wonderful retreat. Where would you hold the retreat and why?

Somewhere warm and sunny and tropical. In fact, I have the perfect location in a bunch of bungalows not far from our house, along the Indian Ocean where the sand is warm and white, and there’s nothing but blue ocean for as far as you can see. As long as we’re imagining. J

Then let’s imagine that you sign me up for that retreat. Do you read print books or ebooks? Or a combination of the two?

I honestly didn’t think I’d ever enjoy reading ebooks, but four years ago, my husband bought me a Kindle, and I’ve been reading on it ever since and love it. And because we don’t live near any bookstores, I love being able to automatically download any book I need. It’s so convenient.

The featured book has an interesting title. How did you come up with it?

I love the title, and it fits perfectly. My heroine’s niece is kidnapped, and she is determined to find her—even if it costs her everything.

So what is the book about?

Kate Elliot's suburban life turns upside down when her sister is shot and her niece kidnapped. Unsure of whom to trust, she turns to FBI agent Marcus O'Brian. But Kate doesn't want to leave the case to the authorities. Against the handsome agent's orders, she tracks her niece to Paris, and the City of Light quickly becomes a city of danger. Marcus can't explain why he feels such a strong connection with the headstrong woman, but soon he's taking on the role of Kate's protector. Yet when the kidnappers demand a ransom Kate can't deliver, he's not sure how much longer he can keep her alive. Now Marcus has the next twenty-four hours to save a stolen child and the woman he's grown to love.
