SONG OF MY HEART - Kim Vogel Sawyer - Free Book. Plus Facebook Party and More

I'm so happy to have me friend Kim with us. Welcome, Kim. Why did you become an author?
I’m not 100% sure this was a conscious decision. From my earliest memories, I loved books and writing stories. I believe the desire was planted in me from the moments of my conception and I just needed to follow the course God set for me. Now, why I became an inspirational author is easier to answer. :o) As a Christian, God is woven into the fiber of my life. I wanted to write stories where He could be a main character, so writing Christian fiction is a perfect fit for me.

If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?
I spent a lot of years with children as a teacher before God opened the door to publication and I loved it. If for some reason I wasn’t able to continue as a writer, I’d gladly teach again.

If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?
If I could go back in time, I would go to the early 1900s. I’d love to have the chance to get acquainted with my grandmothers, who both died when my parents were children. I suppose I’ll have to wait until I get to Heaven to meet them--I’m pretty sure they’ll be part of my welcome-home committee.

What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?
I’d love to visit the New England states. I was able to zing through them once, but that brief glimpse inspired a longing to enjoy a lengthy stay. Someday...

How about a foreign country you hope to visit?
There are two foreign countries I’d like to visit: Russia, because it’s where my family originated; and Australia, because I love the way the people talk!

Australia is one of my dreams, too. What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?
Oh, wow, just one? Seems He’s always teaching me something of importance. LOL The last few weeks have tried my trust in various ways, and it’s given me an opportunity to “lean not on my own understanding.” Although it’s hard to keep walking forward when you don’t know where the path is leading, it’s a great exercise in depending on Him to guide your steps.

Tell us about the featured book.
I’m particularly fond of Song of My Heart. It was inspired on an antiquing trip to a tiny Kansas town called Paxico. My soul sister and I wandered into a century-plus-old former mercantile, where a hand-printed sign stated, “More antiques downstairs.” So down we went, into this smelly, dirt-walled cellar. After moving through a narrow hallway, we entered a room that sent story-chills from my scalp to my toes--a large, wood-paneled room with a tin ceiling and an oak stage set off my pillars at one end. Theatre seats sat in rows. Immediately questions crowded my mind: What kind of program took place in this under-ground theatre? Why would they choose to have the performance down here? By the time we loaded in my vehicle for the return trip, the characters were already stepping from the shadows to share their part of the story of a young woman who dreams of becoming an opera house singer...and the lengths to which she’ll go to provide for her family.

Please give us the first page of the book.
DALTON, INDIANA
MID-MAY, 1894
Sadie Wagner let out a squeal of delight. A tufted titmouse shot from the budding brush nearby with an indignant flutter of gray-feathered wings. On an ordinary afternoon, Sadie would regret frightening away a bird that offered such an enchanting melody, but today she was too excited to pause for regret. Gathering her tattered calico skirts in one hand, she clutched the letter from her cousin Sid in the other and dashed for the house.

Bursting through the door, left open to allow in the sweet breath of spring, she cried, “Mama! Mama!”

Her younger sister, Effie, turned from the dry sink, a dripping cloth in her hand. Her brown eyes widened in concern. “What is it, Sadie?”

Sadie waved the letter. “Good news! Come!” Catching Effie’s wet hand, she tugged her sister through the doorway to Mama and Papa’s small bedroom. Their feet beat a staccato rhythm on the pine floorboards, matching the rapid tempo of Sadie’s pulse. She released Effie and fell on her knees beside Papa’s bed. As always, the sight of his drawn, pain-riddled face raised an ache in the center of her chest. But surely the opportunity presented in the letter would ease some of Papa’s burden.

Mama, seated on a chair beside Papa’s bed with a half-empty bowl of potato-and-onion soup in her hands, sent Sadie a troubled look. The lines of worry etched into Mama’s brow had aged her. She set the bowl aside and touched Sadie’s heaving shoulder. “Goodness, child, why are you in such a dither?”

A gleeful giggle spilled from Sadie’s throat. She held out the letter, showing it to both of her parents. “Look! From Sid. Remember he promised to write once he got settled in Kansas? He’s there now . . . all settled in . . . and—” She paused to catch her breath. The dash across the yard had winded her more than she’d realized.

Effie danced in place, wringing her hands. “What does he say, Sadie?”

“He says there is a job for me in Goldtree!”
