Dear Readers, my friend, Becky Wade, just released Her One and Only the last book in her Porter family series. As I’ve shared with you before, I love Becky’s writing. Her stories are set in the area where we both live, so the setting is very familiar … and authentic. Her characters grab my heart and pull me into the story and I walk beside them all the way to the end. Then they linger in my thoughts for quite awhile. And the storylines are well-developed. I’m reading Her One and Only right now, and I’m also enjoying when the other Porter series characters appear as well.

Welcome back, Becky. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?

I love to write about the pursuing and faithful love that God has for us. A few books into my Christian Fiction career, I realized that all of my stories celebrate second chances at love and long held dreams. It's so inspiring and reassuring to think that God can take our imperfection and make something beautiful out of it in His time and in His way.

What other books of yours are coming out soon?

Her One and Only concludes my four book Porter Family series! This time next year the first book in my new series, The Bradford Sisters, will hit shelves.

I’ll be looking forward to that new series. We must feature them on the blog. If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?
Channing Tatum. Why? Because he can act, dance, and isn't exactly difficult on the eyes.

So true. What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?

I’m interested in genealogy and really enjoy watching the TV show Who Do You Think You Are, which traces the heritage of celebrities. I’d be fascinated to meet the first ancestor of mine who moved to America. Why? Because I’d like to see what they look like, hear how they talk, and learn about their motivation for pulling up stakes and traveling to the U.S.A.

How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?

For the first four years after I started writing, I received nothing but rejections from publishers. It was hard! What kept me going:

            1) My love of writing, which is critically important to protect and nurture at every stage of a writer's journey.

            2) Writer friends who were walking the same stretch of the path that I was walking. We encouraged each other!

            3) Good old fashioned perseverance.

            4) Faith that God would work it out however it was meant to work out according to His timing. It’s critical to remember that our identity as children of the King is not in any way tied to our writing success or lack thereof. Having your work published or hitting a bestseller list will never truly satisfy. The only thing that satisfies is our relationship with Him.

A very important thing for Christian authors to learn. Tell us about the featured book.

I enjoy taking a classic romance novel premise and giving it my own unique twist. Her One and Only is my version of a ‘bodyguard romance.’ In most bodyguard romances, the hero is the bodyguard. Does anyone remember the Kevin Costner/Whitney Houston movie?

In Her One and Only, my heroine, Dru Porter, is the bodyguard. She meets NFL superstar Gray Fowler when she’s assigned to protect him from the stalker who’s been sending him death threats.

I had a great time writing Dru because she’s so strong and courageous. Ther’'s suspense in Her One and Only as well as lots of romance, humor, Texas flavor, and family.

Prologue

Dru lifted her handgun, leveling it on Gray’s stalker as she rushed forward through the crowd. The realization that she’d been outsmarted washed over her with sickening certainty. Gray was unprotected. The stalker had pistols in both hands, both barrels aimed at Gray. Had she been next to Gray, she’d have shoved him down, been able to dodge in front to keep him safe. But she was much too far away from him for that. Too far. Despair arced through her mind and heart. She was too far. He was unprotected.

“Lower your weapons,” she demanded, shouldering past bystanders.

           

The stalker’s face turned sharply in her direction, giving her a direct line of sight into facial features that were drawn and blank. Viciously cold.

           

The attacker kept one of the guns trained on Gray. The other pistol moved, with chilling deliberation, until its barrel aimed squarely at Dru.

           

“No!” Gray yelled.

           

The stalker’s attention returned to Gray, fingers whitening on the triggers.

MEANT TO BE MINE - Becky Wade - One Free Book

Readers, Becky is in my local chapter of American Christian Fiction Writers, so we’ve become good friends. When her first Christian romance novel released, I scheduled her on my blog, and I’ve scheduled the next two as well. Because of my own book deadlines, I didn’t read the first one right away. I did read book two when it released. I had to go back and find book one, because she has a unique voice that I love. Now with this book, I read it as soon as I received it (before its release).

She writes the kind of books I wish my publishers had let me write. They are so true-to-life in intensity and passion without being too graphic. I call the romance hot, because of the intensity and passion. And she reveals the reality of how hard it is sometimes to keep within the bounds of propriety when the love is so intense.

The storyline of this novel is intriguing. Her characters are multi-faceted. And I love the Texas setting. In addition, the spiritual thread is very strong and deep. I highly recommend this amazing read. The characters will stay with you a long time.

Welcome, Becky. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?

It's wonderful to have a job that's also a ministry. I know I couldn't finish a page, much less an entire novel, without God's movement in my writing life. I always pray before I open my manuscript and ask/plead/entreat Him to help me. So far, He's been gracious to do exactly that.

On the horizon, I see (Lord willing) more busy, wonderful years with my husband and three children. Writing-wise: two more contemporary Christian romance novels about the Porter Family and one stand-alone novella. After that, I'm not sure. Maybe a long, long vacation to the beach?

I've been married for twenty years and my husband and I have three children. My thirteen-year-old daughter enjoys cheerleading, flat-ironing her hair, Chef Boyardee products, and pop music I don't like at all. My ten-year-old son loathes homework and standardized testing but loves sports, cars, video games, and all things cowboy-related. My five-year-old daughter spends the whole day dancing and singing made-up songs. She's very social and unless I invite one of her friends over to play she attempts to talk to me nonstop. All day. Without pausing.

I have one of those nonstop talkers, and she grown with children and a grandchild. Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?

It's so sad, Lena! I now write during hours I used to spend reading, so I don't have nearly as much reading time as I used to have. It's not unusual for me to take a whole month to read one book. During the summer and non-deadline times of the year, I'm able to read more.

What are you working on right now?

I'm revising my fourth novel for Bethany House, and the third book in the Porter Family series. This one's about Jake Porter. He's a former Marine who came home from Iraq with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and a scar across his face. He's a dark and brooding hero, and since I love the brooding ones, I'm having a great time squeezing every drop of drama I can out of him.

Can’t wait to read Jake’s story. What outside interests do you have?

Tennis! My husband played college tennis and started giving me lessons shortly after we married. I've been playing women's doubles ever since. Currently, I'm part of a team that competes at clubs around the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. Tennis gets me outdoors and exercising. Plus, it's a great way to build friendships.

Does eating chocolate count as an outside interest? If so, I've also got that one covered.

Eating chocolate is one of mine, too. How do you choose your settings for each book?

I follow the whims of my inspiration. My sisters and I once stayed at a small town Bed and Breakfast in Pennsylvania. I found it so quaint that I decided to set My Stubborn Heart there.

I live in Dallas. Even though I'm a city girl, I love taking day or weekend getaways to old Texas towns. Think historic squares, yummy restaurants, patriotism, and COWBOYS. The spirit of those communities inspired me to set my Porter Family novels in a charming little town in north Texas.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?

After giving this a great deal of deep, intellectual thought I've decided to go back in history to 1990's England. Why? So that I'll have the chance to spend an evening with Colin Firth before he meets his wife. Then I can marry him instead. I'll have my own Mr. Darcy!

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?

I wish I'd understood sooner that publication isn't the goal of writing novels. Nor is bestsellerdom or a devoted readership. The real goal of my writing is simply to be obedient to the call God has placed on my life. That's where the joy and satisfaction is.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?

As my children have grown, the problems they struggle with have grown, too. Sometimes I feel as though I'm reasonably qualified to raise children who are eight years old and under. But I think I missed the advanced degree in mothering that might have prepared me for children who are 13 and 10.

Through this the Lord is teaching me (again and again) to trust Him with my worries, my family, our future.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?

Write the book God leads you to write.

Write it exactly how you love it.

Don't let anyone else's process influence yours. Seek and find your own process.

Bio: Becky Wade is a graduate of Baylor University. As a newlywed, she lived for three years in a home overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, as well as in Australia, before returning to the States. A mom of three young children, Becky and her family now live in Dallas, Texas.

Why do you write the kind of books you do?

To glorify God. I do this work becuase I believe that He's entrusted me with this writing ministry so that He can minister to readers through my books.

I write contemoporary Christian romance in particular because I love it, because it best suits my writer's voice, and because I believe that there are women the Lord wants to reach through this type of Christian fiction.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?

The day my husband first said the words, "I love you," to me. I still remember the details clearly even though he first said those words to me more than twenty years ago.

How has being published changed your life?

So many ways! For one thing, I can't write novels at my own slow and winding pace any more. I'm committed to write a book a year. Even though that's far more time than most authors require, it's my absolute top speed.

I watch a lot less TV these days. I'm on social media, unlike before I was published. I'm (at times) more stressed than I used to be but also (at times) much more blessed, especially when I receive notes from readers. I'm not able to squeeze in pedicures very often any more.

What are you reading right now?

Katie Ganshert's Wishing on Willows. Katie writes beautifully and with such emotion!

What is your current work in progress?

Another contemporary romance! Undeniably Yours is the first in a group of four connected books about the Porter Family. At the moment I'm polishing up the second book in the series.

What would be your dream vacation?

I'm in the mood for a trip with my husband to a remote cabin in Maine. Lush, charming setting. Solitude. Indoor plumbing. Cook and maid (who aren't me) on site. Central heat. Maybe a crystal blue lake and a rowboat. Horseback riding. Lots of dessert.

How do you choose your settings for each book?

I follow my inspiration. I once visited a bed and breakfast with my sisters that so pricked my imagination that I made it into the setting for My Stubborn Heart.

With Undeniably Yours I was inspired to write about a heroine raised by a J.R. Ewing type of father. Did you know that Southfork Ranch is a real place? It's located in Parker, Texas. I set Undeniably Yours in a fictional town similar, in some ways, to Parker.

Yes, I’ve been to Southfork Ranch. If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?

Ryan Gosling. For obvious reasons.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?

Playing tennis. Traveling. Having tea parties with my kids. Watching movies and TV or going to dinner with my husband. Scavenging for chocolate in my pantry.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?

My most difficult obstacle is finding time to write. I'm the mother of three (ages 12, 9, 4). Daily, my first priority is to take care of my family. As the stay-at-home moms who are reading this can attest, “mother” is a full time profession. At times, writing novels also feels like a full time profession.

I haven't overcome my lack of time, but I try to mitigate it by writing in three blocks of time each week. During those hours, my kids are either at school and preschool or my husband is watching them. I protect my writing time fervently, and do my best to focus during those hours, to allow the Lord to work through me.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?

Before an editor or a reader can love your novel, YOU must love your novel. Pursue the kind of story that God calls you to write, the kind of story you feel most passionate about.

That is so true. Too many authors try to write for the current market, and that is always changing. Tell us about the featured book.

Undeniably Yours is about a woman who inherits her father's Thoroughbred horse ranch and the handsome cowboy who runs it. She's not too sure about the cowboy at first. But the cowboy loves her almost at first sight.

            She was too softhearted to be an oil tycoon.

            Meg had always known it but she'd never worried about it much because while her father was lousy at being a father he'd always been very, very good at being rich.

            William Cole had shouldered the responsibilities of the family company for twenty years and if the pressures and stresses of his position had ever been difficult for him handle, he hadn't shown it. He was an old school oil man who sometimes wore Stetsons with his suits and could be ruthless, arrogant, or demanding if the situation called for it.

            William Cole was also, unfortunately, dead.

            Which was why Meg herself was about to have to fire this Mr.—she consulted the file sitting on the surface of the desk—Mr. Porter. He'd be arriving here at her father's home office at Whispering Creek any second for their scheduled meeting. At which time she'd have to look him in the face, turn his future upside down, and crush his dreams.

            A deep sense of panic rose within her. It swirled and clawed, causing her chest to tighten.

            In an effort to counter it, she jerked her worn Sudoku book from the desk drawer. Almost desperately, she ran her gaze over …

MY STUBBORN HEART - Becky Wade - Free Book

Welcome, Becky. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.

Quite a bit! They may not look like me (especially the heroes) but they have the same wry viewpoint that I do and they have my heart... my joys, worries, loves, insecurities.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?

I lived in the Caribbean for three years. Just a few months after we were married, my husband agreed to work as the tennis pro at Cap Juluca Resort on the island of Anguilla. Anguilla is tiny! Just 35 square miles. We lived in a little house on a hill overlooking turquoise water and the neighboring island of St. Martin. No dishwasher. No washing machine. And maybe hardest for us Texans to believe - no air conditioning. But it turned out to be an idyllic time in our lives. We enjoyed the slow pace, the lack of stress, the natural beauty of the place, the people. We still go back for one week of every year to help with a tennis camp for the local kids.

This is us, back when we were young and perky, on the beach just a short walk down the road from our Anguillan home.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?

While living on Anguilla. I wasn't allowed to hold a job there, because they were so protective of the jobs for their local people. So I volunteered, took up tennis and cross-stitching, watched “Days of our Lives.” On one fateful day, I set aside a romance novel and thought, I think I could do this better. Back then, of course, I didn't know how much I didn't know. I had NO inkling of how incredibly difficult it would be to write a novel and even more - to write a saleable novel. I didn't have a clue, but I did have a computer, an imagination, and time. So I simply sat down and began. I wrote an extremely long historical romance for the ABA set in Norway. (I can hear you all snickering.) Not surprisingly, no agent wanted to represent the book and no publisher wanted to buy it. But I loved it. And it was my great love for the work that led me to the realization that I was a writer. It took the publishing industry, of course, far, far longer to agree.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.

Romance novels are my absolute favorite kind of book and have been ever since I discovered them as a teenager. I really adore the old 1980's historical romances. Remember them, ladies? They were long, rambling, flowery, dramatic. To this very day, when I'm in the mood for one my longsuffering library will track it down and have it transferred in. I try to read the women's fiction books that all my friends talk about like The Help and Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Society. I enjoy a mystery now and then. And I like paranormal fiction about such things as vampires and people who can shape shift into dragons.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?

What sanity? In addition to my work as a writer, I'm the mother of an 11, 8, and 3 year old. So between trying (and failing) to keep on top of my housekeeping, driving my kids from place to place, cooking (not my fave), writing (my fave), chasing/hoisting/wrestling my toddler all day long, and doing homework with my big kids at night, I hold onto my sanity by a very thin and frayed thread. Ironically, I'm someone who recharges via solitude and quiet. Ha! Bubble baths after the kids go to sleep help me greatly. As do TV time and movies with my husband. Playing tennis twice a week. Gym workouts (only possible for me because of the onsite childcare). Occasional pedicures. Reading.

How do you choose your characters’ names?

Back when I first started writing I christened my characters with elaborate names like Natalia, Rennick, and Cassiopeia. (Yep, that's right, Cassiopeia.) Later I comprehended that these names were difficult for my reader to relate to, and also unwieldy to the eye. Nowadays, it's important to me that my character's names suit the person's personality, age, place of birth, and upbringing. I give her characters names we're all familiar and comfortable with. Typically the first names of my hero and heroine jump into my head when I'm just beginning to imagine the character. Last names and names of minor characters take more effort. I use the Social Security Administration website to investigate which names were popular in my character's birth year. I also flip through directories (for my neighborhood, my kid's school, church, etc.) to get ideas for last names.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?

Mothering my three kids. It's been the hardest and the best thing I've ever done.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?

I'd be my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Sam. Sam rides along on carpool, snuggles with my kids, sits in my writing chair, attends kid's sporting events, goes for walks in my neighborhood, plays in the backyard. In fact, Sam does many of the things I do - except without any of the worries or responsibilities and with a LOT more naps.

What is your favorite food?

Chocolate. I'm a shocking chocoholic. It's terrible! My sweet tooth demands dessert after both lunch and dinner. And, okay, sometimes first thing in the morning, too. At the moment, I'm loving Lindt dark chocolate bars with sea salt. But my all time, most adored chocolate is See's.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?

After publishing three historical romance novels for the ABA (in '99, '00, '01) I had my first baby and, at nearly the same time, submitted a proposal for a new book to my publisher. My ABA publisher decided not to offer me a new contract. I was crushed. I heard my publisher's decision as a "no" from God to the secular novels I'd been writing. Also, I felt Him calling me in that season to concentrate fully on raising my baby. I didn't write a word for seven years. And in fact, I grew fairly certain that I'd never write novels again. But God, in His way, in His time, rekindled within me a desire to write, this time for Him and His glory. As we all know, He can redeem anything, even the broken-down and abandoned careers of authors. I rolled up my sleeves and started writing My Stubborn Heart for the CBA. I kept telling God that I'd fail unless He was in it. And He kept telling me that he was in it and that my job was to write it and then He'd handle the rest. To my awe, He did just that.

Tell us about the featured book.

My Stubborn Heart is the emotional, humorous, and contemporary love story of Kate (a determined Christian single girl) and Matt (a gorgeous, ex-pro hockey player with a broken heart). Both Kate and Matt are committed to renovate the same old house. But when Kate meet Matt, she realizes that the guy needs a lot more help than the house, and sets her sights on bringing him out of the darkness and back into the light.

Prologue

            There once was a girl who'd been praying for a husband since the fourth grade. Over the years she'd prayed for his health, his happiness, his protection, and -- okay -- sometimes for his good looks. She'd prayed that she would meet him when she was meant to.

           

            Except that she hadn't.

            She'd been avidly expecting and watching for him all this time, from the fourth grade straight up to the age of thirty-one. And though she tried hard to be positive, the truth was that she'd grown tired of waiting. Tired of dating. Tired of breaking off just two bananas from the bunch at the grocery store. Tired of the singles group at church. Tired of living alone.

            Worse, she was beginning to doubt that her nameless, faceless husband existed at all. Maybe, late at night in her kid bed, her college bed, her adult single woman bed, she'd been praying for someone who wasn't coming. Ever.

            Perhaps her husband had run in front of a bus as a child. What did God do in that situation? Swap in an understudy? Or maybe she'd missed her husband during the bustle of her college years, never knowing that the shy guy from physics class was the one. Or perhaps, right from the start, God had never intended for her to marry.
