MY BEASTLY BILLIONAIRE - Jackie Castle - 2 Free Ebooks

Welcome back, Jackie. Tell us about your salvation experience.
I was raised in a church, so I thought I was “good” with the salvation check-box. But then one Sunday, when I was in my early teens, the Lord impressed upon me the need to go up when they made the altar call. I thought it was silly. I was good. I had this. I was a long-standing member and all that. Ha!

Then He said I couldn’t ride into Heaven on my family’s coattails. It was time for me to make the choice for myself. Would I serve Him? Would I give my life and heart to Him? Once I realized He was being serious, I was up there in a heartbeat, giving my live over to Him.

That is such a good explanation about what needs to happen for those of us who grew up in the church. You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?
Oh boy, that’s not a fair question at all. I have way too many very dear writing friends to only pick four.

I will say this. My author buddies are the pillars of my career. I so appreciate having friends with a common interest who understand the struggles and challenges of this crazy profession we’ve somehow ended up in. They pray for me, answer my questions, encourage me to not give up. What a blessing from God each and everyone is. Which is why I can’t pick just a few. Sorry.

I totally understand. Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.
Ugh, I hate public speaking. However, I have found myself in a couple of situations where I’ve taught a class or given a lecture at a writer’s event or at church.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?
How much space do I have?

I guess it was on one of our anniversaries. My husband had a friend who worked in the hotel business and they set us up at a hotel in Dallas that they said we would love. My husband and I are Comfort Inn or Holiday Inn peoples. So, we came home from work and threw a few things in a bag for our special weekend.

Now when I say “bag” we had a duffel for our clothing and a couple of Walmart bags to hold the last minute stuff like snacks and drinks, shoes, etc.

We followed the address and pulled into the Adolphus.

For those who don’t know about this hotel, it’s old, prestigious, and we were like the Beverly Hillbillies pulling into the drive in my husband’s old beat up Ford truck and our Walmart bags. The valets were trying hard not to laugh as we piled our stuff on the luggage cart.

I was completely embarrassed and knew we were totally out of our element. But they were gracious and treated us in the same way they would have treated any other visitor.

Eventually, I got over my embarrassment. My husband doesn’t get embarrassed, though we decided to pretty much stay in our room. He didn’t even own a tie, which was required to enter the lounge. I didn’t think my jeans would be proper attire. We still had fun and have a great story to tell people, like now.

I was at the Adolphus as a guest on the set of a movie. It is really posh. People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
Get ’er done! Do it! What’s stopping you? Are you done with it yet? =)

Tell us about the featured book.
His withdrawal from society and her need to prove her worth come to a head in this modern-day Beauty and the Beast retelling.

When Elisa Lucken's interior design company is hired to decorate the huge but neglected Grimwood Manor for an impromptu holiday gala, Elisa is put in charge of managing the indoor crew. The only catch is--do not disturb the reclusive Duncan Grimwood.

Thrilled and excited about her chance to finally prove herself, Elisa is so absorbed in her work she doesn't hear the blizzard warning that sends the rest of her crew home.

Jewelry Artisan Duncan Grimwood had a reputation of being a playboy until the motorcycle accident that left him damaged inside and out. After a year of recuperating, Duncan has withdrawn from his lavish lifestyle and now lives like a hermit ignoring his family and the terms of his inheritance trust.

Duncan will lose his portion of the Grimwood estate, his personal assistant urges him to re-enter the real world by hosting a holiday gala at the manor to display his latest works. He agrees on the condition that nobody disturbs him while he works to finish his last few pieces.

Snowed in for the weekend with his unexpected guest, Duncan is forced out of his cave. Will the beautiful decorator he's stuck with help him find a new respect for life before he loses everything?

My Beastly Billionaire is the first in the Grimwood Legacy Series. Check for the next book, My Charming Billionaire now on preorder.
Worried that

Each book in this series can be read as a stand-alone in any order, however, it is recommended, for the best reading experience, that you read them in order.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Elisa Lucken’s nervous gaze moved upward to take in the expansive two-story stone mansion. The French Provincial might have been beautiful if not for the pale gray sky and the bared trees whipping in the wind like dancing skeletons. But from her perspective, Grimwood Manor reminded her of the setting for one of those old horror movies.

The grounds were well-kept, but something about the shadowed arched windows and tightly closed curtains that unsettled her. The request to decorate Grimwood Manor’s front entrance and main first floor rooms had come late in the season, leaving Elisa’s boss, Kelly Stewart scrambling to come up with a sufficient plan for the unexpected project.

Thanksgiving was only two days away. Mr. Grimwood’s personal assistant had said that her employer was hosting an impromptu party the following weekend. If they finished the job before the end of November, they would be given a substantial bonus. That was all Kelly Stewart, owner of Stewart Designs, needed to hear. They would work right up to Thanksgiving Day, and hopefully, have everything accomplished.

Elisa parked her Jeep behind the supply truck.

Kelly Stewart had scrounged through all her storage rooms to gather what left-over decorations they could use to transform the massive home into a spectacular holiday sanctuary. It was too late to order specially made ornaments, and there was no time to spend on shopping. They had three other jobs lined up over the next two weeks.

Most of Stewart Designs’ wealthy clients hired them in the spring to decorate for Christmas. Elisa and Kelly spent March through June planning, sketching and ordering so that as soon as Halloween was over, the team could get to work turning the mansions into spectacular wonderland worlds that would put Santa’s North Pole to shame.

Checking her reflection in the Jeep’s side mirror, Elisa pulled her long brown hair over her shoulder and secured it with a band. Then she applied a bit of lipstick to freshen her appearance. Billionaires seemed to like their staff to look professional and well dressed. The cold front that had blown through made Elisa choose a wool plaid skirt, black cashmere sweater and knee-high leather boots over thick leggings hoping they’d keep her warm enough. The larger houses often tended to be more drafty.

Elisa hurried to find Kelly, who’d parked her black Lincoln under the carport.

With clipboard in hand, Kelly was already barking orders to the staff on what to bring in. “Elisa, oh there you are,” she patted her chest as if fearing she might suffer a coronary at any moment. “I feared you were lost after I lost sight of you on the expressway. These out-of-the-way country roads can be confusing. I’ll never understand the people who wish to live out in the wilds.” Kelly lifted her Ray-Bans and glanced around at the surrounding woods, then back to the towering building. “Stunning, isn’t it? I hear there’s a private tennis court in the back acreage, along with a helicopter landing pad, and a driving range. Though I doubt Mr. Grimwood gets to enjoy many outdoor activities after his accident.”

BLESSED GIFTS - Jackie Castle - One Free Book

Welcome back, Jacklie. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?
Trusting God through the hard times. Following your calling, despite the obstacles, and understanding God’s unconditional love.

What other books of yours are coming out soon?
I’ve just started a new series about a family of Billionaires who must meet the terms of their father’s trust or lose their inheritance. The first book: My Beastly Billionaire is a nod at the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale. There will be five books in the Grimwood Legacy series. Book two, My Charming Billionaire (a Snow White retelling) will be releasing in March.

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?
Debbie Macomber. I love her books, her life philosophy and I bet she’s a really neat person to sit and visit with.

What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?
John the Apostle. Why? Because he looked at life through the lens of love and you said I couldn’t choose Jesus. But John knew Jesus and that works for me. Ha!

John’s books are my favorite to read. I think it would be a very nice evening to sit and talk with him. I have so many questions and perhaps he’d do his best to answer with wisdom and kindness.

How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?
Get your manuscript edited and a cover made and publish it yourself. Today is open to opportunities and we no longer have to wait years for our stories to see the light of day. There is no longer anything stopping you from allowing your light to shine and using your talents to the best of your abilities.

Blessed Gifts is the final story in the Lavender Vale Farm Series. The series is about three siblings who find love and life while visiting their sister’s Lavender farm.

Ben wasn't sure if he was father material. Then in a stopped heartbeat, he became a single parent.
Benjamin Brown wasn't proud of his mistakes, but he did intend to try to step up and do what was right, even if the baby's mother wanted nothing to do with him. When the delivery goes bad, Ben is left holding his son with no idea of how to take care of a baby's basic needs.

Lively Lilly has a plan.
Ben's mother, Lilly, takes him to his sister's farm in Thistle, Texas. There is nothing for miles around except fields of lavender, gardens of produce, and an ornery old goose.

However, his sisters Faye and Melanie promised to help Ben get back on his feet. Unfortunately, he fears that he's slowly sinking in the mud.

Olivia Canales wants out.
She has outgrown her family home and nagging/interfering mother. She wants her own place, but jobs in town are few and far between. Besides, she loves working on her best friend's Lavender Farm and Faye has promised her full-time work once they get everything going and open up to visitors.

When Faye's brother shows up with a baby he has no idea how to take care of, Olivia's heart goes out to his dilemma. The deceased mother's parents show up and give Ben an out his problem: They will raise the baby, but only if he gives up all his rights.

Ben doesn't want to lose his son but desperately needs help so he can finish his last semester of college.

Olivia agrees only to end up going in deeper than she ever anticipated.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Benjamin Brown buried his face in his hands and stared down at the polished pale blue linoleum beneath his feet. The hard vinyl sofa grew harder by the minute. How many minutes had passed so far, anyway? The nurses had promised to let him know how Kaci was doing.

Her face had gone sickly pale, brown eyes wide and frightened as she’d shouted at the doctors to save the baby.

Ben covered his ears, but the shouting still rang inside his head. He’d begged the doctors to save her. She was still young. She had plenty of time to have more babies.

The phone of the waiting room rang and the attendant answered, her voice too quiet for Ben to make out. The doctors wouldn’t call with news, would they? He sat back, his head hitting the wall as he rubbed his hands over his face. The callous on his index finger scratched at his nose. Not rough, hard-working hands, but designer hands. Creative hands. Drawing hands that sketched houses and buildings.

His gaze traveled upward, wondering what God was up to now, except he had no heart to ask. Nor was he sure how to pray. Both mother and baby needed to live, but Dr. Calloway offered no promises either way.

Would the doctor listen to Ben’s request?

It wasn’t like he had much say in any of this. Except his name was would be on the birth certificate. Kaci had made sure of that. She’d not wanted to marry him. He’d asked, but not because Mom insisted. He’d honestly wanted to take responsibility for his actions.

Kaci had laughed in his face and told him she didn’t need two children.

Ben genuinely hoped they could work out their differences and give the baby a solid family. Kaci had no faith in family. She’d always depended upon herself and said she didn’t need anyone else.

The swoosh of the door opening drew Ben’s attention to the waiting room entrance. Aside from one other family huddled in the opposite corner, he was the only other person waiting for news.
A slender woman with white hair that had been tinted a bright red on the ends entered tugging several balloons behind her. Red for Valentines coming in February? Lilly Brown loved standing out.

Her heels clomped over the linoleum floor as she headed in his direction. She wore navy pants and a gray silk shirt covered in shiny snowflakes.

Ben groaned at the sight and slumped lower in his seat. He wasn’t sure if he should act like he didn’t know her, or go ahead and get up and greet her with a hug. There would be less of a scene if he got up.

“Is my grand-doll here yet?” Lilly Brown asked, dumping several bags on the coffee table and tying the balloons to the arm of the nearest chair. “I brought some goodies for Mama, too. I remember she loved Dr Pepper, so there’s a couple of bottles in there along with a couple of those celebrity magazines girls her age like. Oh, and I found a lovely scarf at the market last month. Along with a bag of bath bombs that smell like bubble gum.” She gave a toothy grin, rubbing her hands together. “And don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten our new daddy, either. Architectural Digest for you and—”

“Mom.” Ben couldn’t stand this.

“I found the cutest matching Daddy and son shirts….” She started to dig into one of the bags.

“Mom. There’s a problem.”

CANDY LANE CHRISTMAS - Jackie Castle - One free book and one free ebook

Welcome back, Jackie. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
Endless possibilities with Him beside me.

Tell us a little about your family.
This year my husband Bob and I have become empty nesters and second-time grandparents. Our daughter has two children and our son just went off to West Texas A and M.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
Well, I write more consistently now. Every morning M-F, I sit down to write 2000-3000 words. My goal is 10,000 a week.

And my reading is the same as usual. I can go through about a book or two a week.

What are you working on right now?
The next Madison Creek novella, titled The Heart Collector, that’ll come out for Valentines. I’m also taking part in a Kindle World called First Street Church. It’s based on a little Texas town called Sweet Grove. I’ll have three books in that series and a Christmas novella.

What outside interests do you have?
Trying to grow a backyard garden. Walking my dog Banjo. Making crafts. This year, I’m making ornaments from cut branches and burning designs into the disks. They’re turning out kind of nice.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
Various ways. Madison Creek came from my trips up to Michigan where my husband’s family lives. He grew up in a small town and some of the tourist towns are simply beautiful up there.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
Madeleine L’Engle.

I’ve read a few of her books, but Walking On Water was one that really spoke to my spirit about being a writer and what that means. She wrote from her heart and wasn’t afraid to write out of the box. I admire her a lot.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
I wish I would have known more about how to run a business. There’s so much I’ve had to learn over the past 5 years, sometimes I think my head will explode from all of it, and I’m just now starting to feel  more confident about what I’m doing.

What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
That I can’t do this alone. I need Him to be my collaborator in this business, and I need to understand that it doesn’t matter how hard or long I work, my career is in His hands. So I need to trust Him in the good and bad months.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
Put your career in the Lord’s hands.

Understand that the writing part is art—enjoy what you create. After that, you need to decide if you want a hobby or business because the publishing part is really hard work.

The more you write, the better you’ll get.

Tell us about the featured book.
Candy Lane Christmas is about the Sweetness of Starting Over

Candyce Barkley tosses the fake engagement ring, the last token of her sordid past, out the window onto the highway 35N. No looking back. No regrets. Today is the beginning of a new start, a second chance make something of her messed-up life. Her old hometown of Madison Creek is going to love her plans to open a Candy store. If, that is, they can overlook her history for troublemaking. If her family and townsfolk can forgive and forget, then her candy shop might stand a chance at succeeding.

Finley Quinn only has a few miles left before he reaches his stagnant life in Madison Creek. He’s fallen into a rut that he can’t seem to climb out of. A quick stop at the coffee shop results in his bumping into a flash from the past with pink hair and candy tattoos. He hadn’t seen Candy Bar Barkley since he admitted to her that he loved her. Instead of returning his feelings, she high-tailed it out of town. When they end up sharing a ride back home, he figures out that his heart hadn’t been stuck all this time, it had followed the wild girl and she still had it, whether she knew it or not.

Please give us the first page of the book.
The glint of the morning sun caught on Candyce Barkley’s one-half carat engagement ring, casting a rainbow of sparkles on the visor. She yanked it off her finger. Jabbing the down button on the window, she hurled the offensive reminder of her sordid past out onto Highway 35N.
A gale of cool autumn wind blasted her. Her pink hair whipped around her face until she hit the up button with a satisfied nod.

For the past year Candyce had kept up the ruse that all was well, plastering on smiles as fake as the gem in that sorry ring. When she’d had the ring appraised and found it was as worthless as the sorry jerk who gave it to her, she focused on finding a way to climb out of the miry Kyle-Moore pit she’d, unfortunately, allowed herself to fall into.

“That felt so good.” A triumphant smile played across Candyce’s trembling raspberry-red lips. She’d worn the mockery for so long, she’d practically forgotten the ring was there. The only way to break free from the prison Kyle built for her had been to pretend all was well, and that she was clueless to his gambling and cheating.

“Buck up, buttercup!” She told her reflection in the rearview mirror. “Today’s a new day. A new start.” An adventure all of her own making. Nobody to manage her life. Nobody to….

How could Kyle Moore have taken so much from her without her even realizing?

No, no, no. Don’t go there! Boy, it was so easy to make those U-turns back to Pastville.

Nobody would ever be able to convince Candyce that God hadn’t heard her prayers for help and sent Debra Reynolds to find a way to fling open the doors to freedom. And a fresh start.

Debra came to their upscale Myrtle Beach restaurant hoping to convince Kyle to sign with her publishing house. But he’d set his sights on more lofty ventures. She’d been directed to not return without a contract and had stuck around long enough to find out what a total control freak Kyle could be.

She’d also seen how cruel Kyle was to those he thought were beneath him, which included Candyce, even though she was supposed to be his fiancée.

After seeing the creative desserts Candyce could make for the posh customers of their establishment, Debra returned to her publishing house with a new offer and the Escape the Madness plan was born.

Candyce checked her travel app. Another half hour to get through Columbus, Ohio, and she’d make a quick stop for breakfast and stretch her legs. That dingy hotel where she’d caught a bit of a nap last night had given her the creeps. Don’t think about that, either. The Lucky Motel 5 was behind her. Myrtle Beach was behind her. Kyle and his lying, conniving, trickery—was behind her.

Gently slapping her cheek, she scolded herself for thinking backwards again. Instead, she forced her focus on returning to her hometown of Madison Creek, Michigan. Hopefully, they’d forgotten all about her antics way-back-when and would be thrilled to have a candy store in the tourist district. Or what would eventually be the place for vacationers to stop and spend some time. Between the start-up grant the town’s restructuring committee had awarded her and the money from her cookbook advance, she had everything needed to set up her little corner store.
So long as not too many people remembered the old Candyce Barkley, she was confident the shop would do well. At least, she hoped so.

“No, don’t start strolling through Worriesville. One step at a time. Just one at a time.”

Dear Readers, I've become a publisher. The first book released will be a 10 novella collection by mid-October. Six of the authors are multi-published and five are debut authors. All of them, including me, are in the critique group that meets in my home.

I'm excited about this collection. We have seven contemporary stories. And we have three historicals, one set in WWII and two that are westerns.

That was not going to happen.

But her room and board at Sal’s Boarding House and the feeding of her oxen dwindle her papa’s money stash. All her life, due to her father’s vigilante life-style and the revengeful bad men on his trail, Felicity moved from one town to another with no opportunity to put down roots. She desperately wants the six hundred forty acres of free land offered in the brochures that set numerous wagon trains on their way northwest over the Oregon Trail.

Ben Bonneville has problems of his own. Living for the past two months at Sal’s Boarding House, he’s attracted to Felicity. But a wife doesn’t fit into his life’s plan. His mother needed expensive medical care that put Ben into great debt, so he’s off to join the 1849 Gold Rush. He’s committed to panning gold to pay his mother’s medical debts back East, and then becoming a circuit-riding preacher in the Gold Rush towns. Ben sympathizes with Felicity’s plight, but he hardens his heart.

A Christmas Mosaic - by debut author Karen Jurgens
Carlie Livingston is steering into her last year of college in OxfordOhio, confident that she and Lance Holloway are headed to the altar after graduation. Those plans are wrecked, however, by her dad’s infidelity, causing her parents to walk through a messy divorce. Will she have the same fate if she marries her college sweetheart who comes from a secular family? Her mother insists she will.

She tests God’s Word by letting Him take the wheel of her life. But if God is in control, why are all her close relationships crumbling?  Nothing makes sense.

Just when it appears hopeless, Clay McKinney two-steps into Carlie's life, promising to provide everything she’s looking for. But if he’s God’s answer, why can’t her heart release Lance? Where will her final destination be on this journey of trust?

EMANATE - Jackie Castle - Free Ebooks or Print

Dear Readers, Jackie Castle has been in my critique group for several years. She’s a very good friend of mine. And her Young Adult fantasy books are powerful.

Be sure to read all the instructions at the bottom to find out about the giveaway.

Welcome, Jackie. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
Probably more than I care to admit, but you'll never get me to admit that.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
I dressed up as a pirate and called myself Rambunctious Rita when I was teaching a writing class about characters. The kids thought that was hilarious.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
When I was in the 6th grade. I wrote a mystery story because I was a big Hardy Boys fan. I let my grade school teacher read it. She liked it so much, she wanted to read it to the class during our reading periods. The other kids enjoyed hearing it, too. I loved hearing my story and seeing others enjoying it as well. At the end of the week, when she finished the story, she told everyone that she expected to see my books published one day. From that moment on, I just knew what I wanted to be more than anything else in this world.

And no matter what twist and turns life has led me on, there's always been a notebook and story idea around each corner, again and again. The desire to write and the flow of stories have never left me. I always seem to come back to story, time and again, until I've finally decided: This is what I'm meant to do. And I am.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
I get a lot of jibes for this, but I really do love reading kid's and teen/YA books. I love how wild and varied the novels are for this age group. Such fun, crazy, and limitless adventures. The children's and most teen novels are clean. (A biggie for me) Also, the characters are always brave and authors feel more at liberty to leave little nuggets in the stories. I love to read stories that have take-away value.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
I take long, slow walks and talk things out with God. He's a great listener. And if I listen real hard, most of the things that make life crazy have a way of working themselves out.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
I look for names that have some kind of meaning. Alyra's name was first Ariel which meant something like a light that hovers over the waters. Because Ariel has already been taken by a red-headed mermaid, I found the name Lyra which also means light, I think from a star. I added the A in front of Lyra because her name needed to start with an A … for some reason.

Here's another one: Riyah, Alyra's Elderad instructor, came from the Hebrew word, Raya which means friendship love. Riyah ends up being one of Alyra's most enduring, protective, and teaching friends during the course of the series.

I can go on and on about names, but I can't say I spend long periods of time coming up with them. They have a way of coming to me while I'm working out the story. It's amazing, really.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Well, this is a hard one. I guess it would be making the choice to follow my dreams and make a real go at being an author.

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
When I was a kid and saw Bambi, I wanted to be a deer because they were so majestic and graceful. Then I watched Jungle Book and wanted to be a bear so I could look for the bare necessities. Now days, I think it'd be nice to be a dog because mine just lays around under my desk warming my feet and is always ready to snuggle when it's nap time.

The great thing is, through story, I've been a chameleon, a sheep, a kitten, a squirrel, a cricket, a centaur, (not truly animal, but wild all the same), a frog under an enchantment, and an ink pen … but that's not an animal either.

Honestly, I kind of like being me, because I can be whatever I want, when I really want.

What is your favorite food?
Oh … how long is this interview supposed to be? I'm going to keep it simple and say if anyone is hungry for Chinese, feel free to leave me an invite.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
Getting through that first manuscript. I would read it to the writers group I belonged to at the time. They'd critique it. I'd change it, then read it again. They'd critique it again and the circle went on and on until I finally… actually… reached THE END, and threw it into a drawer. Then I moved on to the next one and trusted I learned enough to get over my delusional need for perfection.

Lesson learned? Don't sweat the small stuff, you can only get better with each word you write.

Tell us about the featured book.
Emanate is the third book of The White Road Chronicle series which starts off with Illuminated, then follows up with Luminosity. There are five books total planned for the series, along with a prequel novella series that's also in progress.

If you find the Narnia stories enchanting, and if Wizard of Oz swept you off your feet, then I bet you'll enjoy visiting Alburnium, as well.

Please give us the first page of the book.
The Road Beckons

Jerin of Yarholm pushed through the group of onlookers circling a man dressed in the Racan uniform. The half-moon and stars on the man's cloak branded him a servant of King Darnel along with the matching symbol tattooed on his upper arm. Jerin grasped the golden medallion hanging around his neck. The emblem of the white tree indicated he belonged to Alburnium and served King Shaydon who dwelt in Aloblase. The difference between the two marks was Jerin could always make the choice to take his off, whereas those with the Racan mark were given no choice in the matter.

Two scouts held the bound prisoner before the general. "We caught him leaving Kinti, Sir." The guardsmen shoved the beaten man forward. "We believe he bears a message to his master. Possibly seeking reinforcements?"

Marcel studied the ragged man as he tugged at his goatee in contemplation.

Glancing through the dense trees, Jerin barely made out the gray stone fortress of Kinti, presently held captive by Racah's forces. His palms itched with the urge to grab up his weapons and kick the foul thieves out of King Shaydon's city.

One of the guardsmen, who went by the name of Rat, handed General Marcel a folded piece of parchment. "He carried this, Sir. But none of us can read the script."

Marcel's steel gray eyes scanned the letter. He was a quiet man, never rash in his decisions, or demanding with his orders. He'd led them to Kinti with the intent to acquire fresh horses and new recruits. Instead of a warm welcome, their unit was driven away by a shower of fiery arrows.

"Well, your assumption is probably correct, Rat." Marcel addressed the guardsman while he handed a satchel to Jerin who now stood at his side. "See if there's anything important in there while I ask our guest a few questions."

Before Jerin could open the flap, the bag was snatched from his hand by Captain Dirk, his officer in command.

"I'll do that, private." Dirk said with his usual sneer. "I'm sure Marcel mistook you for me. Now return to your duties, boy. Aren't you supposed to be helping stew potatoes?"

With a scowl at his superior, Jerin moved a short distance away, fist clenched.
