A GIANT MURDER - Marji Laine - One Free Book

Bio: Marji Laine is a graduated home-schooling mom of four with two college students staying in the nest for a little longer. She and her hubby of 34 years also share their North Texas home with a rescue pup named Rosie. When Marji isn't editing or publishing the books for her authors at Write Integrity Press, she indulges in penning her own mystery, suspense, and romance novels. She loves acting in musical comedy, has directed many stage productions, leads a women's Bible study and sings in her church choir. She prefers mountains to beaches, dogs to cats, NASCAR to football, Magnolia pie, white roses, green, and Hallmark Movies and Mysteries. You can find her at her website: http://.www.MarjiLaine.com

Welcome back, Marji. Why did you become an author?  My mom asked me over a decade ago, “If money and time weren’t issues, what would you do?” I answered, “WRITE!” I surprised myself, because I had a successful scrapbooking and stamping business with 5 annual retreats. But Mama wasn’t surprised, and it was at that point that my career began.

If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job? I do love to help other authors publish their books, and I love teaching, but writing is like a vacation to me!

If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why? I really like the time I’m in. I might have enjoyed living earlier in the twentieth century or being a fly on the wall during the Exodus. I can be a history buff, but I don’t want to actually go there.

What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to? We traveled a lot when I was a kid, covering most of the middle part of the US, but I’ve never been to the Grand Canyon, to Hawaii, or to the uppermost part of the northeast - Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. I would love to visit all of those places at some point.

How about a foreign country you hope to visit? My ancestry is from Scotland. I would love to visit there. I’d also love to visit the castles of Germany.

What lesson has the Lord taught you recently? We’re studying the life of Joseph right now, and I’m loving how the Lord wastes nothing. Also, my daughter has given me food for thought: When my emotions focus on the negative, demand proof. I have loved doing that.

Tell us about the featured book. I am so honored to have been invited to join in the Ever After Mystery series. We were challenged to take a fairy tale and rewrite it to craft a mystery set sometime in the 1920s. I placed mine in downtown Dallas, 1926, and jumped into “Jack and the Beanstalk.” My mystery is complete with a giant, a harp, a goose, and Jack, and of course, it wouldn’t be complete without magic beans.

Please give us the first page of the book.

Dallas, Texas, 1926

Always be prepared for anything.

Josephine Jacobs could almost hear her mom’s reminder. But how could she have prepared for fisticuffs in the middle of an elegant event? She crouched next to her serving station in the modern chrome kitchen as yet another crash of pans made her flinch.

The guests of the elegant affair on the other side of the swinging door must be hearing all of this. Maybe the band in the Century Ballroom drowned it out. Josie poked her head above the counter.

“Haven’t you seen the paper, Goose? I’m a giant in my field.” TG Taggert, the host of the gala, grabbed the smaller man by his white chef’s collar and shoved him against a shelf full of cookware.

He pushed off the unit and shoved a fist toward Mr. Taggert. “You’re not going to get away with this.”

Mr. Taggert reached to the side and then backhanded the man across the face.

Josie ducked at the violence.

“You don’t have any say, my friend.” Taggert’s voice had an ugly sound. Another crash followed Mr. Taggert’s shout.

Josie peeked out again. How could she not? If nothing else, she wanted to make sure the fight wasn’t moving closer to her.

The chef’s nose showed blood. “I’m not your friend. And they aren’t your beans.”

Beans? She hadn’t been paying attention when the fight broke out, but really. Beans?

Mr. Taggert gathered the chef’s collar in a meaty fist again. “They are my goose-laid, golden eggs, Ganderson. What do you think you’ll do about it?”

The chef’s face looked positively blistered, but he didn’t explode. “I’ll kill you before I let you take my recipes and sell them in your horrible cans.”

Mr. Taggert threw his head back and laughed. Almost a pleasant sound. He patted the chef on the cheek he’d just hit as though the man were a good dog.

“Face it, Goose, you made a gamble. You went up against the big guys, and you lost. Fair and square.” Then he turned his back on the man.

BREAKING POINT - Marji Laine - One Free Book

Dear Readers, I’m happy to introduce Marji Laine to those of you who don’t know her. She lives in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex like I do. And I love her writing. The first book in the Heath’s Point Suspense series was wonderful. She writes three-dimensional characters and plots that keep the reader guessing. I’m eager to read this new book.

God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
That’s an excellent question. I’m overjoyed to be able to write again after it had been squeezed out with so many other things to do. But now, I have the third book of this Heath’s Point Suspense already moving. The second book of my Dallas Duets billionaire romance has been started. And I was just recently inspired to do a spin-off series from my completed Grime Fighter Mysteries. I already have 2 of those stories planned out.

Tell us a little about your family.
I’m so glad you asked about my family! They are wonderful and so supportive. I have to give a shout out to my daughter, Breana! She’s been such a blessing to not let my sweet hubby and I drift into empty nest syndrome. She’s living at home while she pursues her teaching degree, and her twin sister is working on a degree in Humanities at a near by seminary. She wants to go into girls’ ministry. Their older sister is about to graduate with that same degree and plans to then get her teaching certification. She just got married about eight months ago – still newlyweds. My son, our oldest, is also married and recently bought his first house. I’m delighted that all of them still live close to us. We’re a pretty tight-knit group.

Our family is, too. It’s such a blessing to have them all living close by. Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
My writing did change my reading habits. Instead of simply scanning the books, I found I read carefully what made this story one of excellence. And I began to critique what I read. LOL! Years under your tutelage, Lena! But now, with all of the editing I do through my publishing company, reading is too hard on my eyes. I do it all day long. So, when I “read” for fun, I generally listen to audio books, and I don’t critique them nearly so much.

What are you working on right now?
Having put out BREAKING POINT – ahhhhhhhh. Let me just ponder that a moment … Okay, moment’s over. I have a great new heroine that I want to highlight in several mystery episodes. I was inspired by old reruns of Perry Mason and his faithful gal-Friday, Della Street. That’s where the inspiration came from, but the mysteries are taking me in directions that I didn’t expect. I love it when they do that!

I do, too. I’m working on a proposal for an editor right now, and a week ago, God gave me a new first chapter, and I have to make the first first chapter into the second chapter and edit it a different way. What fun! What outside interests do you have?
I’m a huge sports fan. I’ve already started watching the Cowboy preseason games. I record all of the Texas Ranger games. I even tune-in to Women’s College Volleyball on occasion. But my favorite sport of all time is NASCAR. It marries the strategy of a chess board and the brilliance of a physicist at the speed of 200 miles per hour. I look forward to every race!

James and I are huge Texas Rangers fans. How do you choose your settings for each book?
My girls tease me about this. Anytime we’re together, there’s always a chance that I’ll comment on where in the area would be the best place to hide a body. I’ve chosen all sorts of places, from the underneath side of a rotating Christmas tree in the grand atrium of a local hotel to a clothing donation box. Generally, my settings will be in Dallas or a made-up small towns in East Texas, but the location of the body and the subsequent mystery are what inspire the stories for me.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
You know this is a tough question. I’m inspired by the words of many people. But seriously, if I had the chance to inspire someone else—like Judy Garland or Marilyn Monroe—to help them not give up on life and heavenly Father who loves them so, that would be my choice.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
I wish I had realized the viable option of indie publishing. I spent way too many years pursuing traditional publishing. I don’t think that pursuit has been all that beneficial to my writing or my career. And I feel I missed opportunities that I could have taken had I not been so focused on the traditional side of the publishing picture.

What new lesson is the Lord teaching you right now?
Patience. I’m in a waiting place – basically waiting for things to fall into place. In the midst of this waiting place, life continues to happen, but I have this ever-present unrest because some things haven’t been completed. I will be so glad when this waiting time is over, but I know He’s strengthening me through it.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
Hmm. Third would be to learn at the feet of gurus—listen to podcasts or read blogs from experts in our field like Thomas Umstattd, Randy Ingermanson, Frank Ball, Mark Dawson, and Dave Chesson. They usually have something that I can apply right away to my writing or to my marketing plan.

Keep writing. You can’t direct a boat that isn’t moving or turn a car that isn’t running. In the same way, you can’t improve your writing – turn a corner – unless you are indeed writing.

I think the top thing is to have a teachable spirit. I think that’s important in life as well as in writing. As Christians, Micah 6:8 deals with this teachable spirit when he tells us to “… walk humbly before God.”

Tell us about the featured book.
I’m so excited to put BREAKING POINT out finally. This was actually the first novel I completed way back when. And Lena, you were one of the ones who helped me in our critique group. Granted, that was five rewrites ago. The story of how this book came to be is a whole ‘nuther article. Seriously! But I can tell you that it’s got something to do with hidden treasure. But treasure isn’t the only thing that’s hiding. A kind and good-hearted man has suddenly died. When his prodigal daughter comes into town to help her mom through it, she suddenly starts having these “accidents.” Her life is routine, pedestrian … okay, boring. So why does it seem like someone is trying to end it? Get BREAKING POINT at this Amazon Link

Please give us the first page of the book.
This is a little more than the first page, but it has a natural break:
“What do you mean he’s missing?” Lt. Jason Danvers set his fishing pole aside. Myra Stone wasn’t given to panic. He’d never even noticed the lady flustered. Until this phone call.

“I found a note this morning. I thought he’d taken an early walk, but then I saw that his car was gone and found the note taped to the kitchen faucet that he’d gone to the store for some of his hot chocolate.” The older woman’s voice broke, though she struggled to lower her volume. “And I called his phone, but it was plugged into the charger in the office.”

He pulled a pad out of his jacket pocket and the stub of a pencil. “When did you see him last?”

“I went to bed last night at about eleven. He was watching a baseball game that we’d recorded earlier.”

“And you don’t know when he left?” Who ventured out in the middle of the night for a silly can of cocoa? Jason jotted the quick details in case he needed to remember them later.

“No. I didn’t hear him leave, and didn’t … Oh, dear.” She was losing control.

Myra, I’ll call Chief Tate, and we’ll start a search.” He needed to do better than that if he wanted to settle her tension. “He probably ran out of gas or maybe had a flat. With no phone, he couldn’t very well call for help.”

She stayed silent for a moment. “Yes. I’m sure you’re right about that. Please find him for me.”

Her plea ripped at a piece of his heart. He ended the call and reeled in his empty line. He’d pack stuff up later. Palming his phone, he jogged to his black Jeep and climbed in.

Pulling onto the gravel road that ran alongside this forgotten branch of Grayson Lake, he called Heath’s Point Chief of Police and filled him in on the details. “I’m north of town, but I can swing west a few miles and try some of the back roads from Dallas.” That late at night, Ellis would have had to go into the city or at least the suburbs to find his favorite chocolate powder.

“You take that side, and I’ll check in town for his car.” Chief Dell Tate’s normally gruff voice held a tone of worry. “Chances are he came in for donuts or something and just forgot to pick up the note he’d left before going fishing.”

Reasonable. But Jason would still feel better when they found the man. He turned onto the county road and tuned in his police radio. He tried to keep the darn thing off on his free days, but this situation warranted his monitoring the feed. Setting it to scan the local agencies, he tried to relax. Ellis Stone would be found. He’d be fine. This would be a non-issue.

But something in his gut argued against all of that.

God, please, calm Myra right now. Help us find Ellis, so she doesn’t have to worry.

AIN'T MISBEHAVING - Marji Laine - One Free Ebook

Dear Readers, Marji Laine is a dear friend of mine, who is a very good writer. I’ve loved every book of hers I’ve read. I’m really looking forward to reading Ain't Misbehaving. I know you'll love it, too. This is one you won’t want to miss.

Welcome back, Marji. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I think in terms of romance and mystery. In any given setting, I can see either romantic conflict and comedy or a potential hiding place for a body!

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
They day I married my best friend, my joy couldn’t be suppressed. I caught a glimpse of him in the lighted sanctuary as I stood in the darkened room at the back and could not control my giggles. My dad had to hush me and the laughter squeezed out the edges of my eyes and dripped down my cheeks. The joy with that man has continued, and it started with a bang of intensity that day!

How has being published changed your life?
Working with the people at Write Integrity Press, seeing the genuine committed hearts of the editors and other authors, made it so easy for me to be whole-heartedly committed as well. And that has had unimaginable consequences as I’ve become the executive director of the company. Working daily with such talented authors has also honed my own writing ability. I LOVE my job!

What are you reading right now?
My reading, nowadays, is generally editing purposes. I’ve just completed Joan Deneve’s heartwarming romance set in Africa. That is due to come out in April. But I do like to listen to recorded books when I’m driving or walking. Right now, I’m listening to a Hannah Swenson Mystery: LEMON MERINGUE PIE MURDER by Joanne Fluke.

What is your current work in progress?
I am in the planning stages of my next romantic suspense. BREAKING POINT is the second story of the Heath’s Point Suspense series, following COUNTER POINT. This story focuses on the couple who own the Sunrise Inn on the edge of town and their daughter who visits from Dallas.

I’m eager to read that one! What would be your dream vacation?
I took it this summer! My kids sent hubby and me on an Alaskan cruise. I saw animals and scenery I’d only dreamed of seeing in and around picturesque little towns that stole my heart. We both hope to return!

James spent part of his army time in Alaska. When we married, he told me he wanted to take me there. Our lives have prevented it so far. How do you choose your settings for each book?
I like using small towns as my settings. My college is in the East Texas town of Commerce where my brother and sis-in-law still live. It inspires most of my environments. But recently, I started placing my stories in Dallas. AIN’T MISBEHAVING and before that, most of the Grime Fighter series. For those, I loved finding a unique building and creating a story there.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
I would want to spend the evening with a graphic artist – an expert on photo shop who could teach me ways to take our book covers – and my photography in general – to new levels.

I’m with you on that. What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
Game night with the fam, photography, Hallmark movies, crochet, oh, and currently – planning a wedding! Squee!

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
TIME! And I haven’t exactly overcome it completely. I am WAY-organized, though, and most of the time I’m on schedule with things. I just haven’t found a way yet, to immerse into my new story well enough to take advantage of moments here and there for writing.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
That’s a great question. I think the most important thing a writer should have is a teachable spirit. Their stories will only get better if they listen to the critiques of trusted partners and value the opinions of readers. Authors who are serious about their careers should always be open to insight from readers.

That is so true. Tell us about the featured book.
I loved working on this story. Annalee is wealthy, cultured, and empty. But in the depth of her heart, she has a dream of mattering someday. But her dream disappears when she utters one word. That word sets into motion an impossible situation for Annalee. The girl who never finishes anything, not even a sketch or a painting, is faced with losing her very freedom if she can’t successfully complete this impossible task.

Enter CJ Whelan. His past disgusts him, as does the society in which he grew up. He’s dedicated his time and all of his resources to bettering the lives of others, a practice his father barely tolerates. Not only does CJ have to constantly avoid the obstacles his dad throws in his way, he faces living down his background and social standing with those who would like to use him for their own purposes.

And Annalee’s arrival into CJ’s world ensures her failure, if it’s up to the ones who would like status and fortune of their own.

Please give us the first page of the book.
Her future wasn’t the only thing at stake.

Annalee Chambers slipped into the bare consultation room with her mother, father, and attorney. Reporters filled the hallway and shouted questions as the door closed.

She tugged at a stray blond curl the August breeze had pulled from her hair clip and sank into the wooden chair. If only invisibility were possible—a desire initiated when they’d arrived at the Frank Crowley Court Buildings, and cameras started flashing.

Leaning against the high back of the seat, she stared at a ceiling fan making a slow rotation. For a solid minute, she matched her breathing to the fan’s rhythm.

“The judge has to toss away this whole fabrication.” Her mother paced the same path as the shadows from the circling blades. “Can’t she identify the real victim in this case?”

Annalee bristled at the insinuation. “Mr. Madison was the victim. He and his family are the ones impacted by the accident.” Accident. She hadn’t even realized she’d hit anyone.

“It’s clear the district attorney is only trying to hurt my campaign.” Father lifted a slat from the blinds hanging over the only window in the room. The sunlight made him squint. “He’s been a fan of Mayor Ellis since the beginning. Now, since I’m a real threat, he’s doing everything he can to make me look bad.”

And Annalee had aided in the destruction of her father’s mayoral campaign when she traveled to club-row to pick up her tipsy friend.

I can hardly wait to get my copy of this book. I have to know what happens next. How can readers find you on the Internet?
I roam a lot of places. Find me on www.Facebook.com/MarjiLaine, www.Twitter.com/MarjiLaine, and on www.Amazon.com/Marji-Laine/e/B00AJF2MFC. You can also find me at my website, www.MarjiLaine.com and my publishing site, www.WriteIntegrity.com. Hope to hear from you!

COUNTER POINT - Marji Laine - One Free Book

Bio: Schooled by experts such as Perry Mason, Jessica Fletcher, and Dr. Mark Sloan, Marji Laine writes the mysteries she craves with a touch of romance and a thread of faith. Her series are made up of stand-alone stories with satisfying endings where justice prevails. She sets most of her books in and around the Dallas area, where she has lived all of her life, or in the small towns of East Texas that she adores.

A homeschooling mom of four, she loves to discuss possible book scenarios with her daughters. Their conversations have even been known to alarm waiters and store clerks. At which point, one of her girls will roll her eyes and say, “My mom's an author.” That pretty much explains the way her mind works.

Dear Readers, Marji Laine is a dear, dear friend. I’m thrilled to share her first full-length novel with you. She’s a member of the critique group that meets in my home, and we were privileged to critique most of this book. YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE IT!!

Welcome back, Marji. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
I write a lot of my faith into my characters. My heroine’s tend to pray as they think things through. I do the same thing, inviting the Lord into my day and staying aware that He’s there. Cat and I also share a fondness for Diet Pepsi and legacy. She doesn’t think she’s the right person to fill her father’s shoes. Boy, can I appreciate that feeling and the self-doubts that go along with it!

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
I talk for my dog and the trouble is, he’s a lot funnier than I am. Probably the craziest thing I’ve ever done was in college. One summer, the high-rise dorm was empty and my soon-to-be hubby’s roommates were the night security guards. So on Friday nights, we’d get a huge group together and play a stone-age version of laser tag, with water guns. Some outlandish things happened with that, I can tell you!

You just reminded me of what probably was my craziest, and most dangerous, thing I ever did. And it was in college. On our campus undeveloped land, which was in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, there was some kind of pipe that stretched from one hill to another over a deep small valley. It had to be over seventy feet in the air. The pipe was less than 12 inches in diameter. I walked across that thing one time. If I’d have fallen, it would have killed me. (grimace) When did you first discover that you were a writer?
I’ve always loved writing. Co-wrote my first screen play at the age of seven, with my best friend who was eight. But I realized God’s call on my life to this career almost six years ago. My mom asked me: if money and time weren’t issues what would I want to be doing. I answered, “Write!” I surprised myself, but not my mom. She’d always seen it.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
That has really opened up with my new role at Write Integrity Press. If I’m simply selecting a book for free time (That is still a thing, right?) I’ll lean toward the romantic suspense novels or funny cozy mysteries. But I also enjoy a great historical romance, like mail-order bride series, and I have a few fantasy authors who write some of my favorite books! And then there are the straight romance novels. Those are pretty standard! In fact, I guess the only genre in the Christian realm of books that doesn’t really interest me is thriller. Wow, I like a lot of books!

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
I laugh a LOT! In fact, I posted a joke the other day after I’d spent at least five hours (No, I’m not exaggerating!) in my car, spread over the course of the daylight, transporting teenagers to jobs, classes, and various activities. I posted the definition of a mother of teenager’s life = I do run-run-run. I do run-run! (Only folks who remember the 70’s will appreciate that quote.) Stress can break anyone, so I try to always do my best and not sweat the times when my best isn’t enough.

Good advice. Before my children got their driver’s licenses, I saw a bumper sticker that I wanted. “If a woman’s place is in the home, why am I always in the car?” How do you choose your characters’ names?
Sometimes, the characters come with names. Then there are a few characters that I dub victim, hero, best bud, or meanie face. There have been a few of those tags that have become names. And then, there are those that I’ve researched and examined. Googled and sought the meaning of to make sure they match the character. Those names aren’t really any better than the ones I’ve named after their character tags.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Proud isn’t exactly the word. I’m pleased to be releasing this, my debut novel, that has been almost six years in the making. I’m excited to learn what people think of this. (And terrified.) I’m giddy that it will finally be in people’s hands in just over a week!

It took eight years before my first book was published. If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
This makes me think of an old saying that made the rounds as email was becoming more and more used. I wanna be a bear. They get to sleep half the year. They can do tricks like catching fish in their bare hands – bear claws. Getting fat is normal, expected, and attractive. Females have babies the size of a large peanut while they are sleeping, and the kids know better than to tick-off Mom. Yep, I’d choose a bear.

What is your favorite food?
I don’t have a favorite. I really don’t. I love sugar free Hershey’s chocolates with caramel fillings, but other than that, I’m a fan of food. I like toffee cookies and snickerdoodles (sugar free), chicken enchiladas, queso, biscuits and gravy, filet mignon, fettucine alfredo, chicken parmesan, and chili with rice and Fritos. Does that narrow it down at all?

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
My biggest issue was that I thought I knew what I was doing. I had a teaching degree with an emphasis in English and knew when to use semi-colons. I was set, right? You and some of the other wonderful people from the DFW chapter of American Christian Fiction Writers gently informed me that I was a dunderhead. Lol! Not really, but you did an amazing job of training me through weekly critique groups. For more than a year, I attended two per week and learned as much from listening to critiques on other manuscripts as I did from the comments on my own.

This was one that you critiqued on, Lena! Finally coming in print. Squee! Here’s the short version:

Cat McPherson felt she’d lost everything when her father died, but as the target of a madman bent on revenge, she still has much to lose. Her former boyfriend, Ray Alexander, returns as a hero from his foreign mission, bringing back souvenirs in the form of death-threats. When several attempts are made on Cat’s life, she must find a way to trust Ray, the man who broke her heart.

Keeping Cat safe from a fallen cartel leader might prove impossible for Ray, but after seeing his mission destroyed and several godly people killed, he knows better than to ignore the man’s threats. Cat’s resistance to his protection and the stirring of his long-denied feelings for her complicate his intentions, placing them both in a fight for survival.

Villa Montes, Chiapas, Mexico
“A boy.” Sevilla clapped his hands. The smack echoed against the bare adobe dome. “He will be a fine boy.” He beat his boot heels on the marble floor. His black beard bounced against his white tunic. “Ha. Go upstairs, wife. Lie down. Rest.”

“I have plans for the afternoon.” Oleta took a step backward, putting the leather sofa between them. Her large eyes wary. But her middle already showed evidence of his child.

“You will do as I say.” He snapped in her direction and put his back to her. His child would be the heir to his business. His kingdom. He must be strong and healthy. “Go now and take care of my son.”

“He is my son, too.” The woman’s voice cracked. She pressed her back against the wall.
She tested his good humor. His eyes hardened as he shot her a glare. His hands fisted at his side, prepared to take action on her insolence.

But this was supposed to be a joyful time. He relaxed his muscles and applied a measured smile under his black whiskers. “Be careful, Oleta. I cannot guarantee that my gratitude will last too far beyond my son’s birth.”

She stiffened. Good. She should be scared. She’d seen enough to know her fortunate circumstances and to be thankful for them.

Sidestepping out of his study, she scurried up the stairs. Her heels clicking like the little mouse she was. Popping in a hollow manner. The sounds grew louder. She gasped as glass broke, echoing in the entrance of his villa.

“Oleta?” He stepped toward the great hall.

“Señor Sevilla.” Two from his security. Good. He needed answers.

“Go, check on Oleta. Make sure my son is all right.”

Captain Ortega gestured to the other man. “We must get you to safety.”

“Another drill? These are getting tiresome.”

“They prepare your security team to keep you safe, sir.” Ortega ushered him through the thick hallway to his helicopter hanger.

The other man had seen to Oleta. “Make sure my wife comes.”

The captain touched his earpiece and issued the order.

Sevilla climbed aboard the revving bird and looked back.

Ortega grew pale. “We must go.” He climbed aboard.

“Not until Oleta arrives. She is carrying my son. My heir.” His humor returned. A young prince to carry on his legacy.

The angled roof sections lifted.

“Stop. I will not leave without her.”

“We have to go, Señor.” Ortega strapped a belt around Sevilla and shouted at the pilot.

“I will have your head.” Sevilla kicked at the man, willing him to fall out of the gaping side of the transport. No such luck.

Dear Readers, I've become a publisher. The first book released will be a 10 novella collection by mid-October. Six of the authors are multi-published and five are debut authors. All of them, including me, are in the critique group that meets in my home.

I'm excited about this collection. We have seven contemporary stories. And we have three historicals, one set in WWII and two that are westerns.

I'm in the process of the final edit of all the novellas. We have a wide variety of stories I think you'll like.

The line-up includes:

THE LOVE BOAT BACHELOR - Marji Laine, and 7 other authors - One Free Ebook For Everyone

Dear Readers, today I’m hosting a dear friend of mine and a member of the critique group that meets in my home.

Welcome, Marji. Tell us about your new project.
LOVE BOAT BACHELOR is a romance novella written by eight different authors.

You were involved in something like that last time you were here, weren’t you.
Yes, through Write Integrity Press. This is actually our fourth collaborative novella, and they all have about the same concept. Given a detailed character and a setting, each author writes an original chapter in the story. It’s amazing how the character journey weaves together. And even more confounding how our voices tend to blend. Readers have had trouble believing that the stories have more than one writer.

What’s special about this book?
The Love Boat Bachelor is our first sequel. I’m really excited to tell the further story with this. With last year’s book, A Dozen Apologies, we introduced a lady with a changed life who needed to make amends to 12 men she’d humiliated. Each fellow met with Mara in his own chapter. At the end we asked the readers to help us figure out who should win her heart. It was a tough decision and many of the men walked away disappointed. So we took the guy who collected the second-most votes and built a new story around him. Sort of like the Bachelorette and the Bachelor TV shows. Lol!

Here’s the back cover information:
Romance is a joke.

After the love of Brent Teague’s life came back into his world only to marry someone else, Brent is through with women. He might be through with being a pastor, too.

Brent was so sure that God brought Mara Adkins home to him so they could marry and live happily ever after. Six months after her wedding to another man, that theory is obviously a dud. If Brent could be so wrong about that, who’s to say he’s not mistaken about God calling him to pastoral ministry?

Tired of watching Brent flounder for direction, Brent’s feisty older sister boots him out of Spartanburg and onto a cruise ship. Brent’s old college buddy manages the ship’s staff, and he’s thrilled to finagle Brent into the role of chaplain for the two-week cruise.

As the ship sets sail, Brent starts to relax. Maybe a cruise wasn’t such a bad idea after all. But there’s just one little thing no one told him. He’s not on any ordinary cruise. He’s on The Love Boat.

What’s a sworn bachelor to do on a Caribbean cruise full of romance and love? He’ll either have to jump ship or embrace the unforgettable romantic comedy headed his way.

Will there be a contest with this book?
Yes! Just like last year’s novella, our hero meets a number of eligible bachelorettes and falls head over heels in love with one of them. The problem is, the authors have no idea which gal he’s chosen. We’ll be posting a new chapter each weekday, starting Monday, January 26 – February 4, on the Write Integrity Press blog. (http://www.writeintegrity.com) Readers are encouraged to vote on their favorite heroine from the 4th through the 7th. The winning gal will be in the final chapter that will release with the book on Valentine’s Day.

So you have to download the book to find out the ending?
Yes. In order to learn just who the readers voted for, and who won Brent’s heart, you have to download the actual e-book. But there is good news with that! The book is FREE on www.Amazon.com for 4 days. February 14th – February 17th. So while I don’t have a free book to give away today, or even a chapter to share online, the chapters – all but one of them – will come up starting Monday at www.WriteIntegrity.com and the book is free for EVERYONE on Valentine’s day. With Love J!

A RUBY CHRISTMAS - Marji Laine and Others - A Free Kindle Book

Bio: Marji is a homeschooling mom of four, with the oldest working in the mission field in Africa. She spends her days transporting to and from volleyball, teaching writing classes at a local co-op, and directing the children’s music program at her church. With decades of leading worship, directing and performing in theatre productions, and script-writing, Marji took the plunge to creating scintillating Christian romance and romantic suspense novels with a side of Texas sassy. She invites readers to unravel their inspiration, seeking a deeper knowledge of the Lord’s Great Mystery that invites us all.

Welcome, Marji, your collaborative novella, A Ruby Christmas, started a stir this week. But it’s not available from Amazon just yet?
No. This is a cool thing that Write Integrity Press did last year with The Christmas Tree Treasure Hunt. The chapters of A Ruby Christmas are posted on the publisher’s blog, one per day, until the final two chapters. They will be available only when the book releases on Amazon next week.

So the end of the story is only in the book?
Yes, but it gets better! A Ruby Christmas is actually FREE for the first four days. That way, anyone reading along can finish the story without interruption.

I see. So how does the collaboration work? How do so many different people write a cohesive story?
I don’t think it would be possible without the Lord’s guidance. Seriously. We’re all looking at the project from different perspectives, and we’re spread out all over the world. But we were united with the desire to draw Ruby forward, helping her realize her heavenly Father’s truth along with many truths about herself. Because of that unifying focus (and some amazing editors!) the story just folded together and gave Ruby life.

So how did you get involved?
Oh, I love that question! I was blessed to win the contest last year that allowed me to take part in The Christmas Tree Treasure Hunt. That was their first collaborative novella. It soared, catapulting all of us to Amazon Bestselling Authors list for over a week. This year, I found myself even more blessed to be invited to participate. Whee!

This time you got to participate as one of the authors?
Yes! And I had a short story included in their Valentine’s book, Heart Bouquets. I even get to be involved in a special novella this February.

All from just one contest?
The contests happen all through the year, so anyone – published or not – wanting to take the challenge should follow the Write Integrity Press blog.

Please tell us about the story.
Here’s a little about A Ruby Christmas: Ruby Joy Buckner, cowgirl, has never left the Lone Star State, but at her father’s request, she takes her faithful canine companion and travels the world in search of Nativity pieces. As Ruby collects the pieces, she also collects a few unexpected surprises, including an awareness of the beauty in other cultures, and quite a menagerie of new friends, thanks in part to Yippee Ti Yi Yo who charms everyone they meet.

Ruby’s budding awareness of life outside Texas opens her eyes to a world of whimsy, and the Nativity pieces she collects are unusual. Will her father approve her eclectic collection … and the changes that travel brought to Ruby’s life?

It sounds like a real fun read. I did read the first chapter, but I'll finish when I have the whole book. How can my readers find you on the Internet, Marji?
Links, in order of preference. Use only those you want to use:

Actually, the book will be free for 4 days starting on December 13, but the author would love to interact with your comments anyway. Please tell us where you live, at least the state or territory. (Comments containing links may be subject to removal by blog owner.)

If you’re reading this on Google +, Feedblitz, Facebook, Linkedin, or Amazon, please come to the blog to leave your comment if you want the author to read them. Here’s a link.

THE CHRISTMAS TREE TREASURE HUNT - Marji Laine and Eight Other Authors - Ebook Free For Everyone Today

I'm thrilled to be featuring Marji Laine today. She's one of the authors I've been mentoring for quite awhile. And I love her writing.

Now Marji, suddenly your name is on the cover of a book. How did that happen?
Back in October, I heard about a contest that Write Integrity Press hosted for their Christmas novella. They invited unpublished authors to submit a chapter using their premise and mine was chosen as the best fit with the rest of their authors. I danced on the ceiling for a solid week! It was a quick turnover, though. I learned of the win a few days before they announced it on November 30 and already the Kindle version of the book is available on Amazon. (And today it's free!) (The link for the book is http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Tree-Treasure-Hunt-ebook/dp/B00AIVXGRA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1355114766&sr=8-1&keywords=the+christmas+tree+treasure+hunt)

So how did the Christmas Tree Treasure Hunt work?
It started off being posted in the authors' blogs. Serial form. Didn't Mark Twain and Charles Dickens start out that way? Then yesterday, instead of posting the final chapter, we've invited everyone to download the Kindle book for FREE for the next couple of days. That final chapter is the perfect ending for the story!

Tell us about the story.
I have to say, I'm blown away that nine different authors wrote this. The continuity of character and plot is extraordinary. Downright shocking as we all have very different voices. But the story itself made me bawl, twice! So touching.

Here is the back cover information:
Grace takes delivery of a package and her life is turned upside down by nine sealed mystery envelopes from her late grandmother. Grammie’s instructions require Grace to take the journey of her lifetime, not only to far off places, but also into the deepest parts of her heart. As she follows the trail laid out for her and uncovers her family’s darkest secrets, Grace is forced to confront the loss and betrayal that has scarred her past and seek the greatest Christmas Treasure of all.

Did you and the other authors collaborate or brainstorm at all about the story?
No, and that's another reason why the way it folded together so beautifully has me in total awe. There were a few little adjustments made here and there, but everyone seemed to be on the same frequency. I can only describe it as a series of connections by the Holy Spirit. And after reading the full story, I'm convinced that is exactly what happened.

And where did your chapter take Grace?
I'll have to let you read it to find out. My trip is Chapter Five. But I will tell you that it was inspired by my son's last two mission trips. His descriptions and stories sparked my creativity. I even used a couple of his pictures on my blog when I posted my chapter. (That link, if you'd like to use it is: http://marjilaine.com/2012/12/07/christmas-tree-treasure-hunt/)

Thank you, Marji, for sharing this with us.

Readers, everyone can click on the link near Marji's picture and download the book. If you don't have a Kindle, you can download Kindle for PC, Kindle for iPhone, or Kindle for Android free and read the book that way.

Check back later today for this week's winners.
