PROMISE ME - Jo Huddleston - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, Jo. Tell us about your salvation experience.
No one has ever asked me this. My salvation experience remains vivid in my memory. Thank you for asking.

I was 15 years old when I was saved in a small, country church. The sermon that Sunday morning was about the parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25) who went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them brought oil with their lamps, but five failed to bring along oil for theirs. Their wait for the bridegroom lasted into the night and at midnight when the bridegroom approached, the ones without oil asked the others to give them some oil because the flame of their lamps was going out. They refused and while the five went to buy oil, those with oil went in to the wedding with the bridegroom, “and the door was shut” (v. 10). The bridegroom would not open the door to the five when they returned. They were unprepared and did not get to meet the bridegroom. I realized I was not prepared. I prayed that Jesus would not shut the door on me and asked for the forgiveness of my sins.

I, too, was saved in a small country church. You’re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?
Karen Ball, Francine Rivers, James Rubart, Cassandra King. These writers’ personalities and books have impacted my life in general as well as my writing life. It would be a privilege to sit among them and hear them speak of their philosophies and be encouraged by them.

A wonderful group. What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?
As a youngster, from K-12, I changed schools 7 times. In the 10th grade, in yet another new school, I got lost in the school, ended up on a different level, and walked into the boys’ locker room. Yes, there were boys in there getting ready for P.E. I still wonder how I maintained my composure, but I calmly turned and left the area. I still remember that day, although the boys probably don’t. At least, I hope they don’t!

People are always telling me that they’d like to write a book someday. I’m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?
“If you want to write for publication, treat your writing as a business, not a hobby. It will take a 110% effort from you. Be prepared to accept rejection of your book, always remembering the agent, editor, or publisher will be rejecting your book, not you.”

Very good advice. Tell us about the featured book.
Promise Me is book 3 in the West Virginia Mountains series. Here’s the back cover copy:

When war calls…faith is tested

In 1960, civil discord in Vietnam fills the news. After his college graduation, Patrick Fitzgerald plans to join his daddy’s South Carolina accounting firm. But Uncle Sam may have another position in mind for Patrick—in the U.S. Army. His family’s affluence would be no match for the persuasion of the military draft.

Adriana Montagna’s papá ekes out a living as a coal miner in the mountains of West Virginia. Can a lasting relationship form with Patrick, or will his wealth become a barrier between them?

Meanwhile, the fiber of America’s unity stands on the precipice, while its youth fight a no-win battle on foreign soil. What good can a young couple hope for at such a time as this?

Please give us the first page of the book.
August 1960 - Morgantown, West Virginia
“Good night, Chet. Good night, David. And good night for NBC News.” The program signed off with the Texaco Gasoline red star logo across the screen.

In Dean Loreen Fletcher’s apartment, Patrick Fitzgerald sat closest to the television when NBC’s Huntley-Brinkley Report ended. He stepped to the floor-standing console and turned off the television. He took his time returning to sit on the sofa beside Adriana Montagna. A somber silence settled over the living room and its six occupants, interrupted only by the humming window air conditioner.

Patrick scooted to the front edge of the sofa cushion and rested his forearms on his legs. “I don’t want my first job after graduation to be in Vietnam.”

No one remarked and he continued. “The situation over there worries me. Now Washington announces we’re sending 3,500 soldiers to South Vietnam to help them fight against the communist North Vietnamese. When I graduate from college in December, I hope their mess over there has cooled down some.”

Adriana laid her hand on his back. “Patrick, hush. We don’t want to think about you going overseas.”

TRUST ME - Jo Huddleston - One Free Book

Bio: Jo Huddleston is a multi-published author of books, articles, and short stories. Novels in her West Virginia Mountains Series and her Caney Creek Series are sweet Southern historical romances. She is a member of ACFW, the Literary Hall of Fame at Lincoln Memorial University (TN), and holds a M.Ed. degree from Mississippi State University. Learn more at www.johuddleston.com where you can sign up for Jo’s mailing list and read her blogs.

Welcome back, Jo. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?
Forgiveness—from God, from and toward others, of self; restoration of a person from a lifestyle not pleasing to God; finding God’s peace He promised He’d leave with us.

What other books of yours are coming out soon?
My new release, Trust Me, is book 2 in the West Virginia Mountains Series. Book 3 in this series will probably release in spring 2016. The book will continue the stories of Julie and Robby, Loreen and Claude, plus a new character or two. No title yet.

If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?
Billy Graham, the evangelist. I think to be in a room with him would be a peaceful experience. I’ve read his books, and would be excited to hear his words on any topic he chose. I so enjoyed his book about angels.

What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?
I’d like to meet Amelia Earhart, the American aviation pioneer. I would like to meet her because I’ve always been fascinated with flight—birds, airplanes, and space craft. I’d like to hear her talk about her flying adventures so I could experience them vicariously.

How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?
On rare occasions your rejection letter will contain clues or suggestions about improving your manuscript—read those rejections carefully so you won’t overlook valuable gems. Make sure you’re sending your story to publishers who want to receive the kind of stories you write. Make sure your story is as good as it can get. Keep reading books about learning the craft of writing—we all never get good enough that we can’t continue to learn.

Back cover blurb:

West Virginia, 1960
A mine owner. An elegant lady.
Seductive voices that scoff at trust.

Loreen Fletcher has suffered heartbreak. She resolves never to trust a man again. She has earned a respected position with no help from anyone, especially not from a man. At thirty-six, Loreen knows loving brings inevitable misery, and she won’t pick at that scab again.

Claude Capshaw’s life has taken another detour. Things that drove him no longer motivate him. Nothing fulfills him anymore—except that elegant lady at West Virginia University. Why won’t Loreen trust Claude when he tells her he’ll never betray her?

Spring, 1960
Morgantown, West Virginia
Julie stepped out of the shower, grabbed a towel from the rack, and twisted it around her short, wet hair. As she wrapped a second towel around her body, the telephone rang. She tucked the end of the towel against her skin so it wouldn’t slip and took the few steps to pick up the phone in the living room.

She cleared her throat to speak those first hoarse words of the morning. “Hello.”

“Is this Julia Capshaw?”

Her friends here at the university called her Julie. This caller must be somebody from home. Everyone there called her by her given name, Julia, as her daddy did.

“Yes, this is Julia Capshaw Montagna.”

“Oh, I’m sorry, Julia. After all this time, I can’t get used to you being married and living up there at West Virginia University. Julia, this is Hank, your daddy’s supervisor at his Coaltown coal mine.”

“What’s wrong, Hank? Why are you calling? Has something happened to Daddy?” Nothing can happen to Daddy! Since he moved her mother into the rest home in Charleston, he’d lived alone in that big house. Had he fallen?

“Well, Julia, a little bad news.”

Why won’t he just tell her? “What is it, Hank? Tell me.”

“It’s Mr. Capshaw, your daddy. He came to the coal mine earlier than usual this morning. I was already in the tipple. Said he didn’t sleep much last night. When we climbed up the slope to the mouth of the mine, he collapsed.”

WAIT FOR ME - Jo Huddleston - One Free Copy

Author Bio: Jo Huddleston is a multi-published author of books, articles, and short stories. Her debut novels in the Caney Creek Series and her latest book, Wait for Me are sweet Southern romances. She is a member of ACFW, the Literary Hall of Fame at Lincoln Memorial University (TN), and holds a M.Ed. degree from Mississippi State University. Jo lives in the U.S. Southeast with her husband, near their two grown children and four grandchildren.

Welcome back, Jo. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
Now that Wait for Me has released I’ll have more time to spend on Book 2 in the West Virginia Mountains Series.

Tell us a little about your family.
I live in the U.S. Southeast with my husband and near our two grown children and four grandchildren. I’m an only child and my husband’s sisters live in another state so the ten of us are it.

Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?
Yes, writing has changed my reading habits. I have less time now to read for pleasure. I read a lot of writing craft books.

What are you working on right now?
I’m working on Book 2 in the West Virginia Mountains Series. I don’t have a title yet. I usually get my titles from a scene or chapter in the book.

What outside interests do you have?
My church, having lunch with friends, attending in-home Bible studies, and, of course, my grandchildren.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I write sweet Southern historical romances. We’ve lived in four states in the U.S. South and spent time in the rest of them. I’m a born-and-raised American Southerner. I probably will set all my novels in the South.

If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?
Amelia Earhart. I’ve always been fascinated by aviation. I’d really like to know what happened to her and her navigator, Fred Noonan, and hear her story of their last hours.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?
How time consuming writing novels really is. I’m blessed to be able to devote all the time I want to my writing. I don’t know how writers who have a day job can find time to write for publication.

For several of my books, I did both, but I prefer only writing as my work, like it is now. What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?
To depend completely on Him. One of our grown children is battling cancer. In such a circumstance, the Lord is the only constant in our lives.

What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
1. Ask God to help you write before your fingers touch the keyboard each day.
2. Be teachable.
3. If writing for publication, be patient.

Tell us about the featured book.
Wait for Me is Book 1 in the West Virginia Mountains Series, is a sweet Southern historical romance, and is set in West Virginia.

Can Julie, an only child raised with privilege and groomed for high society, and Robby, a coal miner’s son, escape the binds of their socioeconomic backgrounds? Set in a coal mining community in West Virginia in the 1950s, can their love survive their cultural boundaries?

This is a tragically beautiful love story of a simple yet deep love between two soul mates, Robby and Julie. The American South’s rigid caste system and her mother demand that Julie chooses to marry an ambitious young man from a prominent and suitable family. Julie counters her mother’s stringent social rules with deception and secrets in order to keep Robby in her life. Can the couple break the shackles of polite society and spend their lives together? Will Julie’s mother ever accept Robby?

Please give us the first page of the book.
Winter, 1955
When Julie left her driveway, she hurried her steps. As the dirt road dipped, she peered into the night to find Robby. She so hoped he waited for her. Clouds flirted with the moon, offering Julie enough light to search for him at the edge of the road.

She reached the place where he always waited but didn’t find him. She called to him, “Robby, where are you?”

Robby stepped out from the shadows farther down the road and walked with a slight swagger back toward her. “I didn’t want to leave before I saw you but I was about to go.”

“Sorry.” She kissed his cheek. “Daddy questioned me as I was about to leave the house.”

Robby took her hands then bent to place his forehead against Julie’s. “So, are you supposed to be at Betty Jean’s tonight?”

Julie started to answer Robby but he muffled her words when he kissed her mouth. A tingle traveled over her insides with his every kiss.

“Let’s get off the side of the road before your daddy follows you. Let’s go behind the company store.”

She wrapped her long coat tighter around her and hand-in-hand they moved to the back of the store where the lamppost out front cast a shadow over them. After more kisses and hugs, Julie and Robby stood with their backs against the building.

“Julie, are you still leaving tomorrow for that dance thing in Savannah?”

“Yes, I have to go.”

“But it’s nearly Christmas. I wanted us to spend time together during the holidays.”

She brushed his dark hair from his eyes. “I’ll be back soon. We’ll only be gone about a week.”

“Don’t start liking that guy who’s your date down there.” Robby scuffed the ground with his shoe. “Does he have a lot of money?”

CLAIMING PEACE - Jo Huddleston - One Free Book

Welcome back, Jo. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
At family reunions I’ve listened to the older generations swap stories of their experiences before telephones and automobiles. Their stories motivated me to write about life before I was born.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?
The day my first grandchildren were born—twins!

How has being published changed your life?
I don’t have as much spare time. I’m either writing, brainstorming, or promoting, and marketing.

What are you reading right now?
Into the Whirlwind by Elizabeth Camden

I love that book. What is your current work in progress?
I’ve finished my Caney Creek Series and am promoting it now. I have ideas for another series but nothing yet is official.

What would be your dream vacation?
At a beach any place on the Gulf of Mexico, preferably the Florida panhandle or Florida western shore.

How do you choose your settings for each book?
I write Southern stories, and the south is familiar to me. I choose a place in the south that I’ve visited or met someone from that place. When I start a historical story, I have in my mind the location and date of the story. I read about both and also spend time learning the speech patterns of the locale. Learning about the way characters of the story would dress in that locale and time in history is a must to know before I start writing.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
Condoleezza Rice. She is an intelligent lady who expresses herself well. I think she has no guile, and she means what she says. And I love her smile.

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
All my hobbies were active sports: water skiing, bowling, a little golf. Those are behind me. Now I enjoy my grandchildren and sometimes crochet.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
I write historical novels. The most difficult obstacle for me is research. If I stop writing to research something in question, I stop the flow or words I had. I’ve tried leaving a symbol where I can go back and do all the research at one time. Neither work well for me so I’ll probably continue doing one or the other all the time.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?
If you’re a Christian author and you feel God has given you a story to tell, continue to write. There will be obstacles if you are writing for publication. Be patient and don’t give up.

Tell us about the featured book.

Please give us the first page of the book.
August 1951
East Tennessee

Callie had not wanted to see her son. Not in that place. The Gateway House. Residency rehabilitation, the judge called it. Family weekend visits.

Returning home and leaving Art behind tore away jagged chunks of Callie’s heart.  Miles sped by in silence. Callie could hardly breathe past the lump of grief in her throat. How long must Art stay there? The judge said that would be up to Art. He could turn his life around anytime he chose.

Her husband, Arthur, and their daughter, Jennifer, tried to carry on a conversation that would coax Callie out of her remorse. That didn’t work. Her son remained in that place, and the car took them farther from him with each turn of the tires. Despair crouched in a corner of her heart over the recent life-threatening health diagnosis from her neurologist. A diagnosis she and Arthur had not revealed to their children.

BEYOND THE PAST - Jo Huddleston - One Free Book

Welcome, Jo. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.
Many characters are a mixture of people we’ve met or observed. So I suppose there is a little bit of me scattered around among the characters.

What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
I was raised as an only child and did what was expected of me. I don’t think I ever did anything quirky.

When did you first discover that you were a writer?
Since college I’ve known a deep-seated desire to write but not until the children were out of the house did I write for publication. So when Mature Living published my first article, I had validation that I had made it as a writer.

Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
Chick lit, cozy mysteries, suspense, and historical romance, which I write.

How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
Our younger generations have what we call a microwave mentality—they want instant gratification. So they’re always in a hurry. I’m not. I’m sure with maturity one tends to recognize the community around them and also the peace that Jesus promised he would leave us.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
When I choose characters’ names I consider their environment, the time frame of the book, and the other members of their family. I wouldn’t put a Beauregard, Jr. in a story about rural living, but I suppose he would be okay in New York City.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
I expect most would claim their family as the accomplishment that they would be most proud of. Other than the expected, I am most proud of becoming a member of the Literary Hall of Fame at my alma mater, Lincoln Memorial University (TN).

If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
A golden eagle. I would love to glide above the fields and seas, have their keen eyesight, and other birds would not pick on me.

What is your favorite food?
My favorite food is pizza.

What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
I am a seat-of-the-pants writer. I never outline. I do write a loosely constructed synopsis. I’ve never had writer’s block until writing the third and final book in the Caney Creek Series. How did I overcome it? I’d never done it before but I finally got 3x5 cards and jotted down each scene I had already written. I got away from the computer, read the cards, and prayed. In the two hours away from the computer I became ready to hit the keyboard again and the words flowed through my fingers, like they’ve always done whenever I write.

Tell us about the featured book.
The Caney Creek Series is set in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee. The series follows the Callaway family through all three books. January 1, 1951
Atlanta, Georgia

Emmajean bolted upright in bed, her heart hammering against her chest, and eyes searching the darkness. What had awakened her? She glanced at the clock. Two o’clock in the morning. She’d only been in bed a scant thirty minutes. She had worked with Barry till after the New Year’s Eve celebrations settled down.

She eased aside the shade at her bedside window that overlooked the street to see what awoke her. Three cars parked beneath the streetlight and four men huddled on the sidewalk. Two of the cars were police cars; one was not. Two of the men wore uniforms, the other two had on suits. They approached the house and hurried to get up the steps to the front porch.

When they knocked on the door, Emmajean scrambled from her tangled covers, searching for her house slippers. She jerked her housecoat from across the foot of the bed and pushed her arms into it. As she cinched the belt around her waist, she stepped across the room and opened her bedroom door. At the same moment, Barry opened his bedroom door directly across the living room from hers, buckling the belt in his pants. When he
